  2. If you attend enough parties and make the right connections, there’s a high chance that, eventually, you’ll be invited into the DJ booth. For people who don’t generally get the access, it can be quite an exciting experience: partying alongside the artists you admire the most, hanging with the event organizers, meeting industry people, and of course, the perks of VIP – drinks, shots, and photo ops. While you are in there having a good time, we just ask one thing of you – don’t be an asshole. Below is a summary of proper DJ Booth Etiquette crafted by Tamara, also known as the fierce tweet-a-holic. If anyone knows how not to look like a jerk in the booth it’s her, so take the advice and save yourself the embarrassment. Do NOT touch anything. Keep your hands off of the mixers and wires, this is not Best Buy. Give the DJ space. You should never be directly beside or behind him/her. What if he bumps into you causing a mistake in the set? Not a good look. Unless the DJ talks to you, leave him/her alone. He/she is working. They don’t have time to explain how things work, to take pictures with you, or to ID a track – save that for after the set. Smile. Don’t forget that cameras are always on the DJ booth. Photos can end up on blogs and in magazines globally – your appearance is a reflection of the night, make it look good. Respect the people around you. If you are a nasty bitch or a major asshole they can kick you out as quickly as you were invited in. And not just the booth, they can boot you right out of the club, so be nice. Do not invite friends. Unless they were invited in with you, do not bring your friends. You are not the gatekeeper and should not crowd the booth. Don’t be wasted. Again, with the number of photos that are taken at gigs, your face could be all over Instagram within minutes. Save yourself the embarrassment and keep it classy, not messy. You are not the star of the show – so don’t act like it. The people came to see the DJ, not you, so save the fist pumping, go-go dancing, and Jesus poses for when you are back on the dance floor. Also, respect the fact that people want photos of the DJ, not you, so stay out of the way as much as you can. Don’t overstay your welcome. Just because you were invited there, doesn’t mean you are entitled to stay. Sometimes if it gets too crowded, or if a photographer needs a shot, you’ll be asked to leave. Do so immediately – don’t make a fuss, just bounce. Manage your expectations. It’s amazing that you got an invitation into the booth, but don’t expect that you are now allowed to be in there all the time. If you really want to go in again, perhaps ask whoever invited you the first time, but if they decline, respect the decision and have fun on the dance floor. Maybe you’ll get another chance in the future. Overall, respect the DJ, the booth, the promoters, and the party-goers. If you show that you can handle it well without being a disruption, perhaps you’ll be invited again. Source: beyondthedrop.com Thoughts?
  3. The larger-than-life tycoon behind Megaupload.com, in New Zealand facing US piracy charges, has made a dance album to distract himself from his woes. But how does he fit that in with playing Call of Duty all night? Rush hour has begun on a sunny Friday afternoon but Kim Dotcom, internet entrepreneur and bete noire of the entertainment industry, is asleep. He keeps strange hours – working, eating and gaming all night, sleeping most of the day. I'm not the only one waiting for him to wake in the shady outdoor dining area of the Dotcom mansion, a NZ$30m (£15m) pile half an hour's drive north of Auckland. James Kimmer, Dotcom's political adviser, whose other clients include the recently freed Russian oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky, is here to shoot a campaign ad for Dotcom's new political party, which will contest the next New Zealand general election, almost certain to be held at some point this year. Kimmer has to wait until the boss is done promoting his debut EDM album Good Times first. Both these ventures launch next week – on 20 January, the day before Dotcom turns 40. That's also the second anniversary of what has come to be known as "the raid", his arrest on money laundering, racketeering and copyright infringement charges. It was conducted in a style straight from Dotcom's beloved video games, by 76 New Zealand police officers, some armed with MP5 machine guns, some arriving on helicopter. The charges stemmed from Megaupload, the file-sharing company he established in Hong Kong in 2005 which became a major piracy hub, at one stage accounting for 4% of all internet traffic, and with 180 million registered users. After intense lobbying by the movie and music industries, Megaupload was shut down by the US Department of Justice on 19 January 2012. Dotcom is currently on bail, fighting extradition to the US, with the next hearing set for April. If the politics, the album, and the legal complications weren't enough, there's also mega.co.nz, a successor to Megaupload, and Baboom, a music distribution service that he has previously described as an "iTunes-Spotify hybrid". He also dabbles in theatre and recently reclaimed the #1 global ranking in the Xbox shooter Call of Duty ("I have a really good kill:death ratio"). He has five young children, too. All in all enough to keep anyone awake all night. Full story: http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2 ... -interview
  4. It's the news dance music fans around the world were dreading - Paris Hilton has signed a DJ deal which will reportedly see her earn around a somewhat ridiculous $100,000 a night. Yes, you read that right. The residency will see her play four gigs at The Pool at Harrah's Casino in Atlantic City, and, if the reported earnings are true, rake in a substantial amount for, in her own words, being "one of the top five" DJs in the world. She'll no doubt be playing some of her big-room favourites from the likes of Avicii, Afrojack and Nicky Romero and trying to replicate her foam-filled party she threw at Amnesia in Ibiza. It seems the heiress' DJ antics in 2013 were not just a phase to kill time before her next perfume launch. Source: mixmag.net
  5. Like mitch said, he's using EDM as the term as a genre, which has probably come about because of all the new breed of moron punters But Sasha is from Wales so would of seen the UK scene grow, and that shits all over anything america knows

  11. Earlier this morning, news confirming that Paul Baümer of Bingo Players has lost his battle with cancer went viral throughout the dance music community. An official announcement was made by Maarten Hoogstraten, one half of Bingo Players and co-founder of Hysteria Records, through their official Facebook page that has shocked and saddened everyone from fans to fellow producers. Back in July, news broke that Paul was diagnosed with cancer and that Maarten would be “representing them on the road”. Maarten proclaimed that Paul fought strongly up until the very end, leading up to Baümer passing away on Tuesday night. Read Maarten’s letter to Bingo Players’ fans below.: Social media pages within the dance music industry have been spreading condolences for Paul’s family, friends, and the community as a whole. Whether or not you had the pleasure of knowing Paul personally, his legacy through Bingo Players will forever live on. Keep an eye out on the Bingo Players Facebook page for more updates. 13. The OG, Tiësto has recently reached 16 million Facebook likes and in honor of the achievement he released a remix of “Minimal Crazy” by Kaaze for free. It’s a gift to his loyal fans.. and man is it a good one. Endorsing this progressive house tune is not surprising; it is just to the taste of the Dutch producer. It’s safe to say Kaaze is on the up-and-up. The Swede pays homage to the original but delivers something fresh and new. Better take advantage of this thank you to the fans by clicking that download button! DOWNLOAD HERE Source: youredm.com
  14. Dillon Francis had the opportunity to meet Avicii for the first time at Stereosonic in Australia. After all of the trolling from Dillon Francis, here we find out he actually was joking all along. Watch the awkwardness as the two meet for the first time. Source: edmsauce.com
  15. Balkan or Bal-Can’t? The Latest Spinnin’ Records Big Room Preview Sends The Internet In A Frenzy On Friday, a short clip of Spinnin’ Records‘ latest release, entitled “Balkan,” was previewed on their YouTube channel. An artist has not been linked to the clip, although it is noted that it will be released on Tiesto‘s Musical Freedom Records. The track starts off with an ethnic South Eastern European trumpet loop, accompanied by appropriate percussion, and gets built up by lasers and a commonly used “are you ready” vocal sample. It then breaks into a big room house drop with an obese kick drum and plucks that sounds like birds chirping…or seizing? We still haven’t decided. After the launch, Spinnin’ fans took to social media with an onslaught of negative criticism. As of now, the preview has received a majority of “dislikes” on YouTube, although a couple of familiar faces went to bat for the clip. We don’t anticipate that this one will be going away any time soon, so let us know what you think of “Balkan,” and make sure to tell us who you think produced it. Source: youredm.com
  16. No, we don’t have audio, but based on Spin‘s report, it looks like Thursday night’s mysterious 3-4AM booking ended up being a surprise set from Tiesto, similar to Skrillex’s surprise set during last year’s cruise. Judging by their words, and the above picture, it looks like the party went all kinds of zany once Tiesto was announced. It sounds like Tiesto started out playing “down and dirty house,” but soon enough delved into the usual Tiesto-brand of dance music, for good or ill, but no matter how many trollery feels Spin seems to have noticed, the pictures make it look like everyone was truly enjoying themselves. And hell, I imagine HARD wouldn’t have booked dude to make him to play a joke – hell, that’d be one expensive prank! Source: doandroidsdance.com
