Vinyl sales up 33% in 2013; Random Access Memories the year’s top seller The stock take is in; here’s how vinyl records fared in the USA in 2013. As reported by Billboard, industry watchdog Nielsen SoundScan have released the final sales totals for 2013, with the 6.1 million vinyl LPs sold in the United States in the last twelve months beating 2012′s total of 4.55 million by a whopping 33%. For the sixth straight year, more vinyl albums were sold than in any other year since SoundScan was launched in 1991, with Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories the runaway top seller, shifting 49,000 records (19,000 in an astronomical first week), with Vampire Weekend’s Modern Vampires of the City coming second with a respectable 34,000 records sold – the same total logged by Jack White’s Blunderbuss, the biggest seller in 2012. Despite Amazon UK publishing its biggest ever vinyl sales figures earlier in 2013, sales in the US appear to have been regrouping around independent retailers, with 64% of all vinyl albums sold last year changing hands at independent record shops. While this marks a surprising fall of 3% on the 2012 total given the success of Record Store Day in 2013, three-quarters of all vinyl albums sold in the US last year were classified as ‘rock’ albums. Analogue purists will also be keen to hear that the continued resurgence in vinyl coincided in 2013 with the first dip in song and album downloads, while physical CD sales continue to decline, falling 14% in the last twelve months. Tracking sales from 31st December 2012 to 29th December 2013, Nielsen SoundScan revealed that Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience cwas the highest selling album across all formats with 2.43 million sales, with Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines’ taking the accolade in the singles chart. One of the things many Logic users were hoping for in the Logic X release was the ability to more freely modify channel strip order in the Mixer. This has not yet happened (X.1?), but there do exist a few work arounds left over from previous versions as well as one brand new to Logic X which are worth knowing and utilizing. KV331 Audio Claims Martin Garrix is using an illegal copy of a Plugin Just like what Skyler White from Breaking Bad would say to an annoying extent, “the devil is in the details.” Earlier today, Future Music Magazine uploaded an in-studio interview with Martin Garrix; and while of course it’s a great, fruitful press opportunity for Garrix, it may have been a mistake to let the world see inside his workshop where there’s… less than legitimate software being used. A few hours after the video was uploaded, the audio software development company, KV331 Audio, tweeted a screenshot of the interview that showed Garrix’s copy of LennarDigital’s Sylenth1 not being licensed under his name- but rather, “Team Air”- which insinuates that Garrix used (and may still use) an illegal copy of the plug-in. KV331 Audio did not address Garrix in outrage, though. Instead, they tweeted in a tongue-in-cheek demeanor about how they would give Garrix a free, not-for-resale license for their latest version of their software synth, SynthMaster 2.6. Garrix has not responded to the tweet. Regardless, a scenario like this isn’t unusual: many young, “bedroom” producers that have reached success have started out with using torrented software – some producers have even admitted it. So to what degree should producers be held accountable for using software that isn’t paid for to make a career out of it? In the cases where somebody like Martin Garrix makes a song that reaches gigantic success- and probably rakes in a lot of cash- how much do they owe the software they used to make that song, especially if they didn’t legally own that software? Do they owe them anything? Should these software companies seek legal restitution? It’s an interesting discussion that borders on the uncomfortable since many producers may be guilty of using pirated software, but if it isn’t discussed, nothing is learned. Source: edmsauce.com

Over the weekend, Diplo announced that a new EP from Major Lazer is set to drop next month. While we got word that a number of artists are set to be featured on the project (including Pharrell, Elephant Man, and Sean Paul), we’d received no word about when we could expect to hear any of these new tracks… until today. We’ve received word that this weekend’s Diplo & Friends will be a Major Lazer special, with exclusive first plays of from the EP going down during Major Lazer’s two-hour set. If you’re a fan of the crew, you do NOT want to miss this. Source: doandroidsdance.com

Arguably one of the hardest working producers, record label owners and collaborators in the dance music industry, Skrillex, is making no changes to his busy lifestyle in 2014, already confirming new music to be released under the collaborative project Jack U, with fellow producer, and friend, Diplo. In a recent interview with Inthemix, Sonny Moore spilled the beans on what 2014 had in stall for Jack U (which is looking rather exciting for all of us fans). Skrillex revealed that Diplo and himself will ”feature on each other’s tracks, and put out some singles together, but mostly we just like to DJ together [as Jack U]. We’ve got five songs that we made that aren’t even released, and we’ll end up releasing in 2014.” Despite confirming a handful of unreleased tracks, Skrillex admits that “it takes a lot of work to maintain a whole other project – Dog Blood’s a good example of that”, exaggerating that Jack U is really just a front for when Diplo and himself want to jump behind the decks. “Wes (Diplo) and I have made so much stuff together, but the thing about Jack U is it’s more the name we use when DJ together.” I guess that part goes without saying, for two of the busiest dudes in the game I found it hard to believe they had time to kickstart this collab to begin with. At least we are confirmed of two things for 2014, new music from the pair, and some killer Jack U sets as well. Check out some footage of Jack U opening at the Mad Decent block party last year! Source: stoneyroads.com … and a high energy track the pair “made together on the train” (during the tour)

Like I said it's a great idea, and it's perfect for those guys wanting to get a taste of what it's like behind the decks. I can see this working, but for it to be successful you need to start with a more feasible and solid grounding. Fine-tune the details in the first step then you won't have to worry about all the bullshit later. Get a plan together and present it with clarity initially and the rest will fall into place.
-
1-3 songs is different to 5-15 minutes. I get what you're doing, and it's a great idea for someone that wants their first crack at playing to a crowd, but the details need a slight fine-tune.

1-3 songs? How do you rate a DJ from 1-3 songs. Is that a typo?

To start the New Year off Avicii hit us with a preview of his upcoming track featuring vocalist Audra Mae. The intro is truly something to behold in this track with its intensely beautiful vocals and acoustic ensemble to back it up. If the full track features even a little more of Audra than we’ve heard so far, I’d call it a success because she brings an incredible energy to the whole situation here. Avicii‘s track record so far has shown us that he knows how to pick great vocalists and merge with their sound to make some catchy music, and it looks like the same will pan out with ‘Dreaming Of You’. Keep a look out for the new track coming soon to wherever you buy music! Thoughts? Source: edmsauce.com

Popular mobile music identification app Shazam has began rolling out an ‘auto’ feature to tag any music playing at anytime effectively turning your phone into a life listening device. The app now has the option to run in the background and pick up any audio be it from your usual music listening times to video games sessions, adverts on Youtube or even during your favourite TV shows. You could say this is a grab at a whopping amount of personal data but Shazam have eased it onto users with the ability to opt-in and included a countdown disable. Although this may be a godsend for some – I know i’ve had to juggle my phone during a killer track whilst driving (John Stewart – Gold), it’s harder to understand why Shazam want to soak up so much information for the user? Currently the app works perfectly in identifying a song you choose to recognise during a DJ set or casually on the radio. One thing we worry about is the results possibly skewing the companies most searched tracks (Most Searched Tracks In Ibizia) and prediction charts (Artists To Watch In 2014). If your Shazams ‘auto’ feature is switched on and its picking up commercial radio which is listened to by hundreds of thousands, that’s obviously going to chart tracks that are being forced on the radio versus what people are genuinely choosing to identify. With Shazam having such close ties to iTunes and more recently Beatport, perhaps the company aims to push more popular songs which in turn means more sales through the app which flows through as additional commission. At this stage we’d personally have the function switched off, but hey, each to their own. Source: FACT

It was Nicky Romero’s birthday, and these festival goers are lucky to leave unscathed, after what can only be described as a serious malfunction of some pretty impressive fireworks. So far, there have been no reports of injuries but judging by what happened, they must be quite shell shocked. On Summerland’s Facebook they state: (SummerLand 2014 is the most important festival of electronic music of Colombia today. This version comes loaded with surprises). They weren’t lying: Source: youredm.com

Avicii may be a little bit fucking mental with a recent ad campaign alongside NJoy e-cigarettes with the tagline being “friends don’t let friends smoke.” The way him and the marketing team pitch the endorsement is he is doing it ‘To Save Lives’ by converting existing smokers to the lesser of two evils – from cigarettes to e-cigarettes. His main contribution to the campaign was sharing the advertisement with his 8,000,000 million fans on Facebook and contributing his hit song “Hey Brother” from his 2013 album ‘True’ But what about the collateral damage? What about his hundreds of thousands of young fans who probably don’t even smoke and then consider buying an ‘E-Cigarette’ because they think it isn’t an addiction or damaging to health and actually quite cool? The E-Cigarette contains the primary ingredient Propylene Glycol that can cause skin, liver and kidney damage according to the Material Safety Data Sheet as well as Nicotine which is addictive and linked directly to increased blood pressure and heart rate that leads to heart attacks and strokes (not so great). I hope more people read between the lines of this ridiculous product endorsement that makes smoking an e-cigarette “seem” completely socially acceptable. This is a step back into the dark ages that overall see’s NJoy access 2 markets; existing smokers and a young and impressionable 14 to 24 year old audience. I imagine if NJoy was a person must be laughing at his stupidity in taking up their offer as they count the dollars come in from their new life long customers/addicts. Source: mixmag.net

According to Vegas Pool Season, 2013 was Deadmau5′s year to flirt with lady luck. On his time off from trolling the internet, the mau5 packed out Hakkasan Nightclub and pulled in “an estimated $435,000 per performance.” Despite the higher rate, club veteran Tiesto tied Deadmau5 by earning $22M last year in gross residency income by playing Hakkasan and Wet Republic and charging an average of $250,000 per performance. Also topping the list was Skrillex at Light, Steve Angello at The Wynn, David Guetta at The Wynn, Steve Aoki at Hakkasan, Avicii at The Wynn, & Kaskade at Marquee. Check out the breakdown below and let us know which of these world class DJs would top your Vegas must see list. Source: youredm.com

Volvo's pulling a new trick for their upcoming cars: onboard streaming music. Available in all models starting May of 2014, the new Sensus system would outfit Volvos with an onboard antenna and 3G modem — and more importantly, a content deal with Pandora that would let drivers stream audio direct to their cars for the first time. Previous Pandora integrations have relied on phone antennas, passing data to car speakers through Bluetooth, but Sensus can use its own antenna, leaving your data plan untouched. By contrast, Sensus will work as a Wi-Fi hotspot, allowing for passengers' mobile devices to piggyback on the car's connectivity, rather than the other way around. It's part of a larger trend at CES, as automakers rush to build connectivity directly into their cars, along with specific apps to make use of the newly available data. The Volvo program will also pull in data from Yelp and Wikipedia for the onboard navigation system, as well as a Baidu search application for the Chinese market. Prior to this technology, Pandora had to rely on phone antennas which would pass data to your car speakers through Bluetooth, but now Sensus will leave your data plan untouched.

After uncertainty regarding Ministry Of Sound's future due to a planned housing development, it's now been decided that the London club can continue to stay open. Although there were initial worries that the nightclub may have ceased to exist or been made to reduce noise levels, each group have finally reached an agreement allowing the venue to maintain its current sound levels. Part of the agreement means that Eileen House, the housing site due to be built in Elephant & Castle, will be subject to very high level acoustic protection. Lohan Presencer, chief executive of Ministry of Sound Group, said: "We are pleased to have reached an agreement with Englewood Ltd that safeguards our future while allowing new development in Southwark. "We are grateful to the Mayor for his efforts and look forward to welcoming our new neighbours to the area." Source: mixmag.net
