Snoh Aalegra Performs at Sonia in Cambridge, MA

On September 23rd, Snoh Aalegra performed for all ages at Sonia in Cambridge. The crowd was small and so were the prices of the tickets. Here is why you should check this R&B beauty out before she gets big.

Snoh Aalegra is a 31 year-old Swedish modern jazz artist. Her music has notes of the classic soulful pop-stars such as Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. She exudes classic throwback vibes, similar to how Amy Winehouse did. There is a somber romantic tone in her voice that is hauntingly old-school.

The modern soul singer has collaborated with names like Vic Mensa and Logic to appeal to the modern jazz and rap community. Her song “Nothing Burns Like the Cold” featuring Vince Staples is her second most played song on Spotify.

On the night of the concert, the crowd buzzed with anticipation under the blue pre-show lights. Mereba, an up-and-coming soul singer, guitar player, and rapper took the stage before Miss Aalegra. She performed her most popular single, “Black Truck,” along with some unreleased acoustics. With her keyboard player and guitarist (Sam) by her side, Mereba engaged the fans with an intimately endearing musical experience.

In between acts, supporting band members got their jitters out as the audience hooted in approval. The level of excitement contained in Sonia was undeniably electric. The lights went out as a sudden wave of silence swept across the venue. Aalegra’s title of her lastest album, “FEELS” was projected on to the backdrop of the stage in a bold yellow and black font. The band, consisting of Justin Deas, Egberto “Budda” Foster, Jacob Brody, and John Youngs, picked up again as the goddess herself walked towards the mic. Donned in a silky green dress with badass basketball sneakers, Snoh slayed the stage before a lyric escaped her mouth.

The singer performed medleys of all the songs from her latest album and surprised the crowd with some never-before-heard tunes off her upcoming album. Aalegra also sang an ode to her faithful fans. She dedicated the performance of “Home” (off her Don’t Explain EP) to her day-one supporters towards the end of her set. For the encore, she got her audience grooving to “You Got Me” and the band went out with a ferociously funky bang.
