Mick Jenkins takes a deep dive into his own mind on his sophomore album

Chicago native and prominent lyricist Mick Jenkins is back with his second full-length studio album entitled Pieces of a Man, a tribute to the legendary poet and musician Gil Scott-Heron.

Jenkins initially broke out onto the hip-hop scene back in 2014 with the release of his highly praised mixtape, The Water. He returned one year later with a 9-track mixtape entitled Wave. Both of these projects feature production from OnGaud, KAYTRANADA, THEMPeople, and many others. These projects cemented the contemplative rapper as a top-tier lyricist in the rap game.

In 2016, Mick released his debut album, The Healing Component, an album all about different types of love. The album was not as well received as his previous work but still showed signs of artistic growth.

Pieces of a Man is 17 tracks long, and includes features from Julien Bell, Mikahl Anthony, Ben Hixon, Ghostface Killah, and Corrine Bailey Rae, and BADBADNOTGOOD. The bulk of this album is filled with stellar jazz influenced production from THEMPeople and KAYTRANADA, and Black Milk.

Mick has always been a deeply conceptual artist; all of his projects have some sort of overarching meaning to them. Pieces of a Man is no different. The album doesn’t fail to provide a relevant message about self-identification that the listener can take from and reflect on over multiple listens.

Pieces of a Man is about exactly what the title states, pieces of a man. Through incredible lyricism Mick is able to deliver raps that describe what it means to be a man, specifically a black man in 2018. On the track ‘Heron Flow 2’ Mick delivers a powerful spoken word poem that  truly encapsulates what this album is trying to get across.

“How is it that we’ve come to quantify the whole of a man, only by what he looks like in the light?”
