  3. Back in the fall, Vic Mensa made mention that he’d been working on a bunch of new projects. One of those included a “more straightforward rap” effort alongside Ty Dolla $ign, and it looks like that will be the first one to see release. Mensa has announced a new EP called Hooligans, and it indeed features Ty, as well as a number of other collaborators. Out December 14th via Roc Nation/Capitol, Hooligans serves as the follow-up to Mensa’s 2017 full-length debut, The Autobiography. In addition to Ty Dolla $ign, guests include Lil Herb, Charlie Wilson, Jesse Rutherford of The Neighbourhood, and Mr Hudson. The previously released track “Reverse” featuring G-Eazy also appears on the EP. Along with the announcement, Mensa has shared a new single and its accompanying visuals. The track is called “Dark Things” and sees the Chicago rapper dipping his toes into the sort of emo rap that’s been booming from SoundCloud recently. You can hear it right from the first verse where Mensa raps, “I need you to love me like I never loved me/ Everyone around me wants something from me/ Pretty girls want the truth, but the truth is ugly/ She don’t even like me, she just wanna fuck me,” before asking how he can get into the 27 club. The song comes via a moody video that features some Queen of the Damned meets True Blood occult vibes. Check out the clip below. There’s no tracklist for Hooligans yet, but Mensa did comment on the title in a statement: “Growing up we referred to ourselves as the Hyde Park Hooligans, so with the EP I wanted to encapsulate energies that represented that experience as well as what’s going on in my life now, for better or for worse.” Source

  5. As Blood on the Tracks celebrates the bootleg treatment with the release of More Blood, More Tracks, we look at several of the many artists so inspired by the album’s songs that they gave their own take a try as well. Welcome to Best Covers. Bob Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks changed how popular songwriters write and sing about relationships forever. The album’s 10 songs are drenched in pain but never wallow. They’re teeming with a vitality unmatched by most breakup albums — a rare mix of raw emotion, belying arrangements, and brutal honesty. But while every artist who has ever listened to Blood on the Tracks probably has borrowed from it or tried their hand at a sad song in a similar vein, it remains a daunting album to cover. Yes, these are great songs — the kind songwriters often wish they had written themselves — but it’s tough to get inside a song so emotional, so direct (for Dylan anyway), and, yes, so personal (whether or not we’ll ever know who, if anyone, these songs are about). Covering any of them, in some way, feels like trespassing because Dylan bares so much. It’s one thing to witness and feel his pain as listeners, but quite another to step inside it and make it our own. Still, many artists have tried over the years — probably more than should have but less than you’d imagine — to make some sense of them for themselves without getting too tangled up in Dylan’s blues. So, here are 10 times artists have tried and, if not succeeded, at least made us appreciate and rethink just how inimitable and groundbreaking Blood on the Tracks remains all these decades later. –Matt Melis Editorial Director More Blood, More Tracks, the latest installment in Dylan’s enduring Bootleg Series, is currently on sale. The deluxe edition includes more than 70 previously unreleased recordings from the sessions behind Blood on the Tracks, specifically outtakes, studio banter, false starts, and alternate versions of “Tangled Up in Blue”, “Simple Twist of Fate”, and “Shelter From the Storm”. 6. It seems impossible, but at the beginning of 2018, Slayer announced they would be embarking on their farewell tour. They had released what now appears to be their final studio album, Repentless, in 2015, after a tumultuous period that saw not only the second departure of their founding drummer, Dave Lombardo, but also the tragic passing of their founding guitarist and central songwriting figure, Jeff Hanneman. It’s been almost 40 years since Slayer first emerged onto the scene, lasting a hell of a lot longer than any band of scraggly avant-garde punk and metal enthusiasts really could have expected. In that time, their sound, a mixture of the theatrical Satanic prog-flecked heavy metal of Mercyful Fate and Judas Priest, the stiff-armed thrash of Metallica, and a heavy dose of straight-up hardcore punk, managed to crest far beyond the shores of the underground, seeing them partnered with Rick Rubin as they set out to become one of the most legendary and influential metal bands of all time. Like any band of consummate age and productivity, narratives have formed around Slayer’s albums, and especially in the light of the closure of the band’s studio work, it’s a fine time to reevaluate the material on its own merits. After all, we now apparently have the complete set and can view records not merely as better or worse than the holiest of thrash holies but also determine how each fits within the arc of the band’s career as a whole. Slayer demand this kind of respect from the world of metal; for decades of work, for near-endless influence on bands large and small, and for some truly exceptional heavy metal albums, including a couple that easily rank among the greatest of all time. –Langdon Hickman Contributing Writer _______________________________________________________ Source
  7. Download or Listen via Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Play | Radio Public | Stitcher | RSS It’s 1986, and the American Dream has born strange fruits. Out in the vast expanse of the Midwest, prosperity is ubiquitous. Everything is good, or good enough. Leisure time has earned Middle America a hitherto unknown freedom of expression – and with it, tabloid-ready eccentricities. This is the world of True Stories, David Byrne’s 1986 feature film and directorial debut “about a bunch of people in Virgil, Texas.” It’s part zany, slice of life comedy, part anthropological study – processed through the music of Talking Heads and projected through a loving, art house lens. It’s the most earnest portrait of ’80s America ever committed to screen, set against shopping malls, prefab warehouses, freeway cloverleafs, faceless tech buildings, fading small town kitsch, and endless green aches of possibilities. Disassociated vignettes and testimonials weave together as the town prepares for the Celebration of Specialness, their local commemoration of Texas’ sesquicentennial. At the center of it all is Byrne himself, a cowboy-hat-wearing self-parody, who wanders into Virgil as a narrator figure. Alongside is Luis Fine, John Goodman in his film debut, a marriage-obsessed man who “maintains a very consistent panda bear shape” and writes sad songs that make you wanna lie on the floor. Fine’s quest for “matrimony with a capital M” and Byrne’s inquisitive stroll through town play off an impeccable cast of characters including Spalding Gray and Annie McEnroe (the couple who never speak to each other), Swoosie Kurtz (the woman so rich she doesn’t have to get out of bed), Tito Larriva (who hears radio signals in his head), and many more. Altogether, these characters form a pageant of mundane modern wonder, celebrating the unassuming suburban grace of a plastic bag in the wind — long before American Beauty — and doing it in a rollicking style that could only come from one of the world’s greatest art rock outfits. Byrne originally conceived of the story through saved tabloid clippings and photo references, which he turned into a feature-length screenplay alongside Beth Henley and Stephen Tobolowsky. However, the pictured truly coalesced after Byrne received some key advice from his Stop Making Sense collaborator, the late Jonathan Demme. “He pointed out the value of having something he referred to as a ‘clock,'” says Byrne. “He meant that you know something’s coming, and that as the film moves on, you know you’re going to get closer to it. You’re bouncing around, visiting all these different characters, but you have a sense that you’re headed somewhere. That helped cement the idea of the talent show at the end, and the parade and all that kind of stuff. And all you had to do was have people mention it every once in a while.” Byrne describes the film as a “grab bag,” collecting not just wacky character portraits, but musings on architecture, and inclusion of talent from all across the state, including different regional musical styles and the strange performances that made up the Celebration of Specialness. “Some of it was based on actual acts that we could get in Texas that existed there,” he says. “The parade was an existing parade. We just inserted our stuff into it and said, ‘Well, we have a whole group of moms with their infants in baby carriage that we would like to be a part of this. And we have a marching accordion band, they would like to be part of it.’ And everybody in the town [where we filmed] said, ‘Sure. Yeah!’ The portrait the True Stories paints of America may be a time capsule of its decade, but the gaze it casts is relevant as the nation struggles with its identity in the 21st century – asking the ever-present question best delivered in Byrne’s punchy “Once in a Lifetime” cadence: “Well, how did we get here?” In the introduction to Byrne’s book on True Stories, originally released alongside the film, he writes: “Empires in retreat get into some pretty weird stuff—Egypt, Rome, England, Japan, Spain, and now the United States. They get this intense pride and nostalgia for what they imagine they are, and what they imagine they were, because they can see it slipping away.” Of the above quote Byrne was surprised at the stunning modern relevance and could only offer that perhaps it came from, “looking whatever was happening right in the eye.” True Stories may be a surreal slice-of-life comedy, but at its heart are penetrating insights into the heart of America. Over the years, the film has languished in one of the most cut-rate, bare bones home video presentations ever known to humankind, and the score and cast recordings of Talking Heads’ songs have either long been out of print or never saw release at all. That gross injustice ends now, as this unsung masterpiece of modern Americana and its complete soundtrack have been given a long overdue remastering and special edition treatment at the hands of the Criterion Collection. Pick up a copy of the Criterion release here. Listen to the full interview with Byrne here as he discusses the film and its evolution from tabloid clippings to cult classic with Consequence Podcast Network Director Cap Blackard. Source
  8. Kanye West and his family are on a philanthropic streak. Just last week, the rapper made a sizable donation to the family of Jemel Roberson, the Chicago security guard who was wrongfully murdered by police. Today, Kim Kardashian-West appeared on Ellen to gift three large checks to organizations and individuals directly affected by the massive wildfires decimating homes and communities across California. While the West home was not affected by the fire, due to the efforts of a private crew hired to protect their neighborhood, Kanye and Kim are assisting others in need. During her appearance on Ellen, Kardashian presented checks to the California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Relief Fund and the California Fire Foundation, each in the amount of $200,000 (according to TMZ). Additionally, Kardashian presented another check for $100,000 to Michael and Lisa Williams, a couple who lost their home in the fire but continued with relief efforts to assist their neighbors. As Kim explained, the donations were a gift from Kanye, his company Yeezy, and adidas. Check out the touching moment below. The Wests are the latest in a line of musicians to show their support for the relief efforts, including Metallica, Lady Gaga, and Dave Grohl. Some, like Neil Young and Miley Cyrus, were not so lucky and lost their homes in the blaze. Source
  9. Christine and the Queens are the latest act to record a session for BBC Live Lounge. The French project of Héloïse Letissier performed an in-studio version of “5 Dollars”, taken from new album Chris, but it was a unique cover/mashup of Rihanna and Kate Bush that deserves all the accolades. Specifically, Letissier paired RiRi’s Anti standout “Kiss It Better” with Bush’s 1978 debut single, “Wuthering Heights”, as FADER points out. Under Letissier’s care, the resulting rendition simultaneously evokes a cool, confident sexiness and pulsing vulnerability — words that could easily describe all three women. “When I think of Rihanna I think of empowerment,” the Christine and the Queens leader told the BBC. “Anti is all about being strong when you unfold, which is quite compelling I think. The strength never stops, it’s quite a feminist statement.” Speaking later on the mashup, she added: “It’s so much about longing and being haunted by someone… The two songs just answer themselves beautifully.” I hope to one day experience this cover live; I’m already envisioning some very dope and funky pelvic thrusts from Letissier, who knows how to put on a damn good show. Stream it here via BBC (scroll to the 2:10:00 mark). In a tweet this morning, Letissier referenced both Rihanna and Heathcliff, one of the protagonists of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights. Bush’s single celebrated its 40th anniversary this past summer. 10. This article originally ran for Thanksgiving 2015. We’re reposting it because, frankly, we’re starving. A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away … I was a fat kid. Not only a fat kid, but a nerdy fat kid, which meant I was awful at everything that kept you from being a fat kid — like sports. But, when it came to pop culture and food, you’d have a long-winded review from moi, typically consisting of childish big words like “exemplary” or “phenomenal” or anything else that meant the same thing but sounded supremely different. One of my favorite pastimes, though, was matching food with films. If I put on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I’d want to order a pizza and probably from Pizza Hut. The same goes for Coneheads with Subway. Or Ben and Jerry’s with City Slickers. Twinkies and Ghostbusters. Burger King and Back to the Future. Oh god, I really was duped and brainwashed by on-screen marketing. Goddamn suits and their savvy ways! Fortunately, I’ve since sworn off fast food as an evil on par with the Galactic Empire (okay, calm down, Mike) and have come to appreciate the more legitimate offerings that filmmakers have captured on the silver screen. Even better, I’m not the only cinephile with a rumbling stomach, a sobering realization I’ve come to this week as our film staff shares their favorite on-screen meals before they head out to drown in gravy. So, dig in and share your own cinematic recipes below. –Michael Roffman Editor-in-Chief _________________________________________________________ Big Night’s Big Dinner Dear God that Timpano. The brothers are preparing a big meal in Big Night in the hopes of impressing the great Louis Prima, who is due in at any moment. That’s important to the plot of the film, but not me. No, no. The presentation of the Timpano is as important as its taste, as we discover when Secondo and Primo (played by Stanley Tucci and Tony Shalhoub, respectively) slap away the hands of a young Mark Anthony. But we’re here for what’s inside. The pasta. The salami. The mozzarella. The meatballs. Screw cultural sensitivity: Mama Mia! –Justin Gerber _________________________________________________________ Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory’s “Pure Imagination” At its core, the Chocolate Room in Willy Wonka‘s “Pure Imagination” sequence is an edible forest, overgrown with giant gummy bears hanging from trees, pumpkin-sized eggs filled with fudge, and buttercups that are actual cups of sweetened butter (or maybe it’s just tea). But the non-edible environs are just as important. Working-class fixtures such as steel-frame windows, industrial pipes, and brick walls remind you that this is, at the end of the day, an actual factory, and it’s that realistic, blue-collar setting that brings an otherwise fantastical world so close that you can actually taste it. –Dan Caffrey _________________________________________________________ Monty Python & The Meaning of Life’s…Thin Mint Talk about an extravagant meal: Moules marinières, pâté de foie gras, beluga caviar, eggs Benedict, a leek tart, frogs’ legs amandine, and quail’s eggs with puréed mushrooms. Then, mix all of that in a bucket and put quail eggs on top with a double helping of pâté. And that’s the starter. For dinner, it’s jugged hare, with a sauce of truffles, bacon, Grand Marnier, anchovies, and cream. To drink? A case of brown ale and a whole lot of champagne. And that’s a light meal for the balloon-like Mr. Creosote. Monty Python & The Meaning of Life presented the creamiest, most disgusting, and downright daunting meal ever put to film. And it looks insanely delicious. Well. Insane, really. But this is peak French cuisine right here. DO NOT eat the after dinner mint, or bodily explosion may occur. –Blake Goble _________________________________________________________ Honey, I Shrunk the Kids’ “Giant Debbie” Imagine your favorite Little Debbie snack cake blown up to the size of a house: eating that ooey, gooey cream filling by the armful, cracking off crumbs of soft oatmeal cookie the size of your head. If you’re drooling right now, then you probably also saw this scene from Honey, I Shrunk the Kids as a child – in which the films’ titular tots happen upon (by Zeus’ design, apparently) a gargantuan, unwrapped Oatmeal Cream Pie in the front yard of their house. Little Debbie’s marketers pray they could make their snacks look this appetizing today. –Clint Worthington _________________________________________________________ Waitress’ Pies Pie is the leitmotif of this delectable indie, as small-town diner waitress Jenna (Keri Russell) bakes pies to match her moods and titles her creations accordingly. There’s the I Hate My Husband Pie (“You make it with bittersweet chocolate and don’t sweeten it. You make it into a pudding and drown it in caramel…”) to illustrate her disillusionment with deadbeat husband Earl (Jeremy Sisto); the Pregnant Self-Pitying Loser Pie (“Lumpy oatmeal with fruitcake mashed in. Flambé, of course…”) when Jenna discovers that Earl has knocked her up; and the I Can’t Have No Affair Because It’s Wrong and I Don’t Want Earl to Kill Me Pie (“Vanilla custard with banana. Hold the banana…”) as Jenna finds herself falling for her OBGYN, Dr. Pomatter (dreamboat Nathan Fillion). The pies are shot from above as they come together, ingredients spilling into bowls and molds with vivid, dare I say food-porny exactitude. And the results – such as the Fallin’ in Love Chocolate Mousse Pie that Jenna bakes for her lovesick friend, or the Jenna’s First Kiss Pie that Jenna’s mother once made for her – kindle the heart as well as the taste buds, as all good desserts should. –Leah Pickett _________________________________________________________ Dick’s Hello Dollies Despite all evidence to the contrary – and all rationality – I choose to believe that the events portrayed in 1999’s political teen comedy (!) Dick are all completely true. Deep Throat really was two teenage girls. The secret behind the missing minutes from the Watergate tapes really was Olivia Newton-John-related. And Nixon and Brezhnev’s historic treaty really was brokered over a tin filled with accidentally spiked Hello Dollies. Surely nothing else could have melted the cold war quite as well as a batch of delicious and illicit cookie squares filled with nuts, chocolate chips, sweetened condensed milk, and an older brother’s secret stash. –Sarah Kurchak _________________________________________________________ Saturday Night Fever’s Two-Tiered NY Slices Cool guy Tony Manero may have questionable taste in music, but his pizza game is unimpeachable. The opening scene of Saturday Night Fever finds Tony strutting through Brooklyn to the tune of the Bee Gees’ “Staying Alive”, but the movie doesn’t truly start until he gets his ‘za on. When our guy rolls up to the window at Lenny’s Pizza, he proceeds to order two slices and stack them one on top of the other, creating a DIY pizza lasagna that belongs right next to “fries on the burger” in the Fast Food Hall of Fame. It’s one of the most inspirational food moments in all of modern cinema, and it’s gone as fast as the D train. But the best part is the woman at the counter, who greets our hero with “Hiya Tony! Two or three?” From this brief interaction, we can only infer that SOMETIMES HE ORDERS THREE. Is a triple-stacked slice of pizza even pizza anymore? What is real? In any case, Tony’s dance moves seem all the more impressive when you account for that cheese bomb in his gut. —Collin Brennan _________________________________________________________ Pulp Fiction’s Big Kahuna Burger It’s not where Pulp Fiction starts in the chronological sense, but the incident inside Brett’s apartment ends up setting in motion one of the film’s most interesting running motifs: Jules (Samuel L. Jackson) and his quest for enlightenment after miraculously avoiding a hail of bullets. And it all comes after he chows down on one of the finest burgers available in Los Angeles, the Big Kahuna Burger. It’s the cornerstone of any nutritious breakfast. —Dominick Suzanne-Mayer _________________________________________________________ Chef‘s Roaming Cuban Sandwiches True story: At the 2014 South by Southwest Film Festival, I hadn’t eaten much throughout the day and figured, “What the hell? I’ll eat after a few flicks.” Bad idea jeans when the first movie was Jon Favreau’s flavorful indie comedy, Chef. As the titular hero, Carl Casper, Favreau spends each scene either in I am a fagget or fresh markets or food trucks deeply focused on some of the most savory meals to ever hit the screen — from sliced meats at Franklin Barbecue to Pasta Aglio e Olio at home with ScarJo to his successful Cuban sandwich, I just … wanted … to die. But, I’m an idiot; I should have known that Favreau tends to stuff food in every one of his films. The late night breakfasts in Swingers, the dirty spaghetti in Made, Iron Man’s obsession with Burger King, it’s all there. But as a child from South Florida, that food truck felt all too real to me. Hopefully it will be. –Michael Roffman _________________________________________________________ Hook’s Invisible Smorgasbord I didn’t starve in college. Far from it. Actually, during my first week at Purdue University, I won 50 free Papa John’s pizzas in a contest sponsored by my credit union. (Freshman 15 clinched!) Still, that didn’t stop me from regularly daydreaming about Robin Williams’ invisible dinner with the Lost Boys in Hook. It’s the scene that taught us, among other things, that if we use our imaginations, food can miraculously appear on our plates. And we’re not talking a Hot Pocket or a Pop-Tart. We’re talking a full Neverland-style, all-you-can-eat smorgasbord with all the trimmings. The only problem I had with the meal was the food fight – such waste! But I guess when you’re cooking with imagination, the next feast is never far away. Ultimately, my imagination never quite filled my plate, so I had to actually drag myself to the phone and order a free pie. The pizza sufficed, but it wasn’t quite bangarang. –Matt Melis Source
  11. Last week, Migos buckled their seat belts for a 14-minute “Carpool Karaoke” session with James Corden. One of the hip-hop collective’s members, Takeoff, isn’t quite done making his rounds on the late-night circuit, however. On Tuesday evening, the rapper appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. To promote his recently released debut solo album, The Last Rocket, he performed “Last Memory”, a single about wealth, getting stoned, and “flying” high (as you can see Takeoff is very committed to this theme). “I go to go to space with the stars/ Might smoke a blunt with my pilot/ Saturn, moon, Earth and mars/ NASA takeoff with the rocket,” the MC rapped, as images of space were projected behind him. Catch the replay below. The Last Rocket features production from a handful of well-known beatmakers, such as TM88 (Gucci Mane, Future) and Murda Beatz (2 Chainz, Travis Scott). Takeoff and the rest of Migos dropped their sprawling sophomore LP, Culture II, back in February. In related news, Migos’ Offset is gearing up to unleash his own first-ever solo album on December 14th. Source
  12. After months promoting their chart-topping cover of Toto’s “Africa”, Weezer officially announced back in October that they’d be returning to their self-titled album canon with The Black Album. Today, the band has revealed that the long-in-the-works album will finally see the light of day on March 1st. Produced by TV On The Radio’s Dave Sitek, each track on the record was originally conceived by frontman Rivers Cuomo on just a piano, a first for the band. What’s more, the recording process saw many of the members trying out different instruments. The result is a step in a new, experimental direction for a band that has been pumping out similar-sounding music for nearly 25 years. Along with the album details, the group has shared a track called “Zombie Bastards”. “Die, die, you zombie bastards,” Cuomo sings over a semi-electronic pop hook; the accompanying video depicts what looks to be remnants from the set of Venom. “Zombie Bastards” serves as the album’s second single following “Can’t Knock the Hustle”. Check out the video below. The Black Album is now available for pre-order, and you can check out the cover art below. 13. We’re a little over a month removed from Phosphorescent’s seventh studio outing, C’est la vie, which explains why singer-songwriter Matthew Houck is still out doing press in support. On Tuesday morning, he stopped by Sirius XMU, where he offered up an incredibly intimate cover of Radiohead’s 2007 In Rainbows lullaby, “House of Cards”. The rhythm, beat, and glow remains intact from the original, but Houck’s falsetto adds a more earthly tone to the song as opposed to Thom Yorke’s extraterrestrial vibe. Stream below. Source

  15. Being close enough to really feel the speakers is easily one of the top 10 best things in the world, but experiencing that unfortunately comes with ear damage. According to the World Health Organization, 440 million people worldwide are at risk for hearing damage resulting from entertainment, mainly concerts. If you are reading this article, you are probably one of them. The average concert produces sound at volume levels of 100-110 decibels, which causes permanent hearing damage after less than 10 minutes. Hence the question arises, how can we protect our ears at concerts without without missing the music? The Vibes team discovered a way to keep the good times rolling with their natural, HD-sound with hi-fidelity earplugs. How Vibes Earplugs Work: As seen on ABC’s Shark Tank, Vibes gives us reusable, virtually invisible earplugs designed for loud live music. Unlike foam earplugs that block and muffle sounds, Vibes reduce the volume of loud live music to a safer and more comfortable level, while still allowing you to hear it, and everything around you, clearly. Technically speaking, Vibes lower the volume of all sounds equally, from bass to treble, which allows you to hear sound clearly, just at a quieter volume. Vibes are capable of providing 22 decibel reduction of live music to a point where your ears are safe from hearing damage and reduces the high and low frequencies equally to offer us a pure and true sound. The sound quality of Vibes cannot be compared to typical foam earplugs that don’t offer pure and true sound. Have you ever wondered why you don’t see older crowds at concerts often? 16. Devin Lima, a member of the 90’s boy band LFO, has died following a lengthy battle with cancer. According to TMZ, Lima was diagnosed with stage four adrenal cancer earlier this year. He passed away early Wednesday morning at the age of 41. Lima auditioned to become the third member of LFO in 1999, joining co-founders Rich Cronin and Brad Fischetti. At the time, the group went by the name “Lyte Funkie Ones”, but at Lima’s urging they shortened it to the abbreviation “LFO”. The trio soon achieved national success with the release of their self-titled debut album, which included two Top 10 hits in “Summer Girls” and “Girls on TV”. In 2000, they served as the opening act for Britney Spears’ North American tour. LFO’s second album, Life is Good, failed to achieve similar commercial success, and in 2002, the trio decided to disband. They reunited twice over the following decade: the first time in 2009, and again in 2017. However, both reunions were short lived. In the years following LFO, Lima continued to make music under various monikers, including “The Cabury Diesel”, “The Mack Pack”, and “Live From Orlando”. In 2006, he participated in a Grammys tribute to Sly Stone, which saw him perform alongside Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith. Tragically, Lima was preceded in death by Cronin, who died of leukemia in 2010. Source
  17. For years now, Ween has made it a point to always play in Denver — and it’s not because of the scenic views and hiking trails. “It’s pot-smoking hippies,” guitarist Mickey Melchiondo, aka Dean Wean, told Westword way back in 2010. “Honestly, it’s a very liberal, progressive, artsy community that’s rich in marijuana smokers.” Now, Melchiondo’s longtime love for the city, its people, and its pot has led up to this: the alt-rocker is planning to open one of the country’s first marijuana-friendly music venues. Dubbed Dean Ween’s Honeypot Lounge, it’s hoping to open its doors by — you guessed it — April 20th, 2019. The announcement was made yesterday during a meeting held by the venue’s prospective chief operating officer, Michael Polansky. “I think cannabis and music make total, total sense together,” he told the Denver Post (via Billboard). “We think that we can offer a unique kind of musical experience for Denver and the world.” The Honeypot Lounge will be located near Coors Field in the Colorado city’s downtown area. In the daytime, the space will be used as a consumption site featuring educational and wellness programs. In the evening, it will host concert events — some even from Melchiondo himself, who will serve as entertainment director. Although the establishment is breaking new ground, there are some caveats. Under state law, a social consumption license forbids the venue from selling alcohol. As social consumption sites also aren’t allowed to actually sell THC products, all concert-goers who’d like to enjoy cannabis delights will need to physically bring their own. Considering there are nearly 400 dispensaries within the city’s limits that probably won’t be a hard task. Source
  18. Sneaky Sound System have a bunch of absolute bangers, but some (we) might argue that this tune was vastly improved by its remix. Pictures while a banger in itself had almost too much of a pop feel, so when Tonite Only jumped on remix duties it got that dancier feel we needed. Going heavy in on that electro sound that was so rampant throughout Australia in the mid 2000s, this track jumped on that sound and ran with it. Of course the track would be nothing without the classic Pictures vocal hook that adds so much to its memorability, but once again, we can’t go past the Tonite Only remix that we still hear getting spins on a night out! Check it out and tell us if you think it’s better than the original or not. Source
  19. Experiencing a shortness of breath, Joe Perry was hospitalized earlier this month following a guest appearance at a Billy Joel concert in New York. Although a press statement released shortly after indicated he would be better in time for a slate of upcoming solo shows, the Aerosmith guitarist has now decided to cancel the remainder of his 2018 tour dates. “I’m home and doing well, but the doctor recommends a bit more downtime before getting out to rock again, so regrettably I had to cancel my upcoming tour dates,” Perry wrote on Instagram. An additional statement noted that the veteran musician “will now take the rest of the year off,” but planned to see his fans again in 2019. The canceled shows were all set to take place in the US from November 30th through December 16th. Among the cities affected: Sioux City, Detroit, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Beverly Hills. It’s unclear when/if Perry plans to reschedule these concerts. Two years ago, Perry collapsed backstage at a gig in Brooklyn while performing with his band The Hollywood Vampires. That situation also seemed dire, but Perry pulled through and eventually rejoined the band on the road. Find Perry’s updated tour itinerary below. Joe Perry 2018 Tour Dates: 11/30 – Sioux City, IA @ Hard Rock Hotel & Casino 12/01 – West Dundee, IA @ RocHaus 12/02 – Detroit, MI @ Crowfoot Ballroom 12/04 – New York, NY @ PlayStation Theater 12/05 – Philadelphia, PA @ Electric Factory 12/07 – Cherokee, NC @ Harrah’s 12/11 – San Francisco, CA @ Great American Music Hall 12/13 – Pasadena, CA @ The Rose 12/15 – Beverly Hills, CA @ Saban Theatre 12/16 – Agoura Hills, CA @ The Canyon Source
  20. Pusha-T’s concert in Toronto on Tuesday night was cut short after a group of men rushed the stage in an apparent attempt to jump the rapper. According to reports on social media, several individuals began throwing beer and paint at Pusha-T mid-way through his set at Danforth Music Hall. Eventually, three men jumped onto the stage. They were quickly intercepted by members of Pusha’s security team as Pusha himself watched from the side of the stage. Police and paramedics responded to the scene, and three people were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. Pusha-T eventually returned to the stage to perform a few more songs, but police ultimately decided to pull the plug and end the concert early. In one video posted to social media, a member of Pusha-T’s crew can be seen holding a two-by-four. The longtime rivals saw their feud come to a head earlier this year, after Pusha-T revealed the existence of Drake’s secret love child. As of now, there’s nothing to suggest Drake had any involvement in tonight’s events (more thank likely, it was some overzealous Drake stans taking matters into their own hands). Still, it certainly adds a dramatic new chapter to the year’s most compelling feud. Source
  21. While the world around us has certainly evolved and our social nuances are much more pronounced, human nature hasn’t really shifted that much from since we were cavemen. Pompeii is a pretty great example of this. While hot molten lava was flowing down a mountain and about to consume everything the people of Pompeii held dear, they were out here trying to get one last fuck and drink some wine before they sizzled away. Now, what was thought to just be any old message on a 4000-year tablet has actually turned out to be the oldest customer-service complaint in the world, and it definitely sounds like the sender wants to talk to the manager. According to Quartz, about four thousand years ago, Nanni, most likely a businessman or artisan, wrote a note to a merchant, Ea-nasir, complaining that the copper ingots he had purchased were of inferior quality and that Ea-nasir had treated him badly by not refunding his money. “How have you treated me for that copper? You have withheld my money bag from me in enemy territory; it is now up to you to restore (my money) to me in full. Take cognizance that (from now on) I will not accept here any copper from you that is not of fine quality. I shall (from now on) select and take the ingots individually in my own yard, and I shall exercise against you my right of rejection because you have treated me with contempt.” As you might be able to tell, old mate was fucking FUMING about his precious copper, and that he’d have to traverse into enemy territory just so he could get his money back. This is basically the equivalent of dealing with some dodgy bloke on Gumtree who insists you “pick up” and lives in the sketchiest neighbourhood in town. Source
  22. In case you were living under a rock, there was a small dance music conference/festival that happened in Amsterdam not that long ago call ADE. The event brings together some of the largest names in dance and electronic music and turns Amsterdam into a big ol’ party (even more so than usual). One of our personal favourites, tech house don Eats Everything was one of said huge names who played to packed out crowds, and his set just got put up on Youtube! With the larger than life character making his way down to Aus soon, we thought what better way to hype ourselves up for him than to listen to his latest mix on repeat, so have a bite below and tell us what you think. You can catch him playing at Electric Gardens in January alongside Patrick Topping and on the same bill as Underworld, Bag Raiders and heaps more, grab your tickets here. Source
  23. The Chainsmokers are well on their way to playing the Super Bowl Halftime show someday, because they’re already working the field with their newest hit “This Feeling.” The Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams battled each other last night, and it was a game for the ages. But, honestly, we’re more concerned with what happened outside of gameplay. The Chainsmokers and Kelsea Ballerini joined forces to perform their massive collaboration for a stadium full of spectators and it was pure magic. NFL’s International Series wanted to see this game in Mexico City, but due to poor conditions the game moved to the Ram’s home stadium. The home team pulled out a 54-51 defeat in the end. Midway, fans were treated to a spectacular performance. This year, The Chainsmokers have drastically upped their game when it comes to live shows, and their counterpart, Ballerini is always on point. 24. GRiZMAS is just around the corner and there’s no better way to celebrate than giving back. GRiZ knows this best, which is exactly why he has introduced his next series of events dedicated to supporting music education in Detroit’s public schools system. Music saved his life, but Detroit built him. Growing up learning music within the progressive container of Detroit’s music scene shaped him, so as a continuation of his roots, he’s dedicated his last five holiday seasons to help kids in the city flourish as he did. The last five GRiZMAS seasons have proven to be a massive success — and this year has potential to be better than ever. This year’s focus of the 12 Days of GRiZMAS builds on past efforts to continue raising funds to increase access to music education for Detroit’s youth. It is this “for Detroit, by Detroit” ethos that has given the holiday series a genuine reputation for bringing positivity and love to one of the city’s most deserving communities. Local mic night, roller disco, volunteering efforts, caroling, a pop-up holiday shop and more will be established over 12 nights as GRiZ and his dedicated family take over the city. He caps it all off with a traditional Night Before GRiZMAS set or two, followed by a 2-night run at Detroit’s iconic Masonic Temple.
