On October 16, Masego dazzled Downtown Boston in a plaid ensemble and saxophone in hand. Performing songs from his recent Lady Lady album and old favorites from 2016’s Loose Thoughts, Masego’s unmatchable coolness and stage presence were unforgettable. The man is so classy, Malia Obama was even in attendance! It was a night of high energy and groovy jams only a man like Masego can provide. The show kicked off with a stellar performance by girl duo VanJess performing songs off their recent release Silk Canvas: Photo by Emily KhanPhoto by Emily KhanThey’re DJ, a great addition to the girl squad, was feeling the vibe: Photo by Emily KhanThe audience sang along to the smooth vocal silk of VanJess, getting more and more amped for Masego’s entrance. Just an hour later, right on schedule, Masego entered the dimly lit stage, playing the intro to “Tadow” on his sax. The audience cheered as his jazzy entrance set the tone for the rest of the evening: Photo by Emily KhanPhoto by Emily KhanPhoto by Emily KhanPhoto by Emily KhanSuit and tie? More like plaid suit and scarf. From “Tadow” to “Wifeable” to “Lady Lady” and an encore of “Navajo,” Masego brought an energy and coolness to Royale that is often hard to find in a live show. It was a memorable evening, and let me tell you he sounds even better live! The post [Photo Story]: Masego Jazzes Up Downtown Boston’s Royale appeared first on Verge Campus. Source

Fans of Jim Henson in search of some holiday spirit traditionally reach for A Muppet Christmas Carol. Fair enough. However, there’s a rare contingent of fans who tend to reach in the cabinet come every November and December for the truly underrated gem: Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas. Based on a book by Russell and Lillian Hoban, this wintry, heartwarming gem follows Ma and Emmet Otter, a down-on-their-luck family who form a band to win a talent show in order to get eachother gifts for Christmas. The special originally premiered on HBO in December of 1977, which is why so many Hensonheads often scratch their heads whenever its name comes up. That also explains why it’s never had a proper soundtrack. On Friday, November 2nd, over 40 years following its original airdate, The Jim Henson Company and Music.Film Recordings will release the entire thing both digitally and on CD. Vinyl enthusiasts will have to find their inner Howard Snake and fight with the collectors to grab a copy on November 23rd as part of Record Store Black Friday. In addition to all 15 tracks from the film, the soundtrack also comes with a “lost” song that never made it to air, extended liner notes featuring interviews with Henson legends like Franz Oz and Dave Goelz, and a special note from songwriter Paul Williams. “The great thing about Jim Henson is that he never wrote down to his audience,” Williams recalls. “He never asked me to write kids’ music. But there is a humor in there that is pure Muppet. And I think that the inspiration came from the book, but it also came solidly from my exposure to Jim’s style. That’s why you wind up with lines [from “Bar-B-Que”] like ‘the sauce Mama makes will stay there forever if you dare to get it under your nails.’ I think that sometimes we’re at our best when we’re trying to show off for somebody we really love – and I really loved Jim.” In celebration, Williams will join Jim Henson Legacy President Craig Shemin at The Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, New York on December 9th for a chat on his many musical collaborations with Henson and the Muppets. Prior to that, however, several local Rochester acts will pay homage to the movie at the city’s Lovin Cup with four interactive performances that run from November 30th to December 2nd. Vince Staples is set to return with new music this Friday, November 2nd. The North Long Beach rapper made the announcement today via social media, as well as detailed some of his guest collaborators in fellow Californians Kamaiyah, Jay Rock, T-Raw (better known as Tyga), and Lil Fade. On Instagram, Staples posted a slightly tongue-in-cheek message about how the music is dedicated to his biggest fan (spoiler: it’s himself). “As artists we are nothing without the fans. I took time off from recording my next album to make a very special project dedicated to my biggest fan and supporter since day one,” he wrote. “He said he needed something that represented him and where he comes from so here it is. Thank you for years of loyalty, I do this for people like you.” GOOD MORNING CITCH WE GOT NEW VINCE STAPLES THIS FRIDAY — Vince Staples (@vincestaples) October 29, 2018 WOW! This new Vince Staples will feature the likes of California legends such as Vince Staples, Lil Fade, Kamaiyah, Jay Rock, T Raw, Vince from Poppy AND MANY MORE !!! — Vince Staples (@vincestaples) October 29, 2018 The new music arrives Midnight ET Friday, aka “9pm Poppy Street Time” (Staples grew up in the Poppy Street neighborhood of Ramona Park). Tyga returned with a brand new single, “Dip”, after releasing his sixth studio album, Kyoto, back in February. Now, the West Coast rapper is back with new version of that single featuring none other than Nicki Minaj. The pair have also released a music video for the cut. Directed by Tyga and Arrad, the clip derived inspiration from Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson’s 1995 “Scream” video. The stark color contrasts are on display, as is the interplay between the two artists. “Tyga and I coordinated fucking well for this video, you would think we put the looks together,” Minaj said on a recent episode of Queen Radio (via Rap-Up). “All we did was put the colors together. The video is clean and fly as fuck. I’ve shot huge big-budget videos before that didn’t look like that. He’s extremely fucking talented.” See it below. Minaj dropped her latest album, Queen, in August, and is now facing a copyright infringement lawsuit from Tracy Chapman. Source

Mick Jenkins takes a deep dive into his own mind on his sophomore album Chicago native and prominent lyricist Mick Jenkins is back with his second full-length studio album entitled Pieces of a Man, a tribute to the legendary poet and musician Gil Scott-Heron. Jenkins initially broke out onto the hip-hop scene back in 2014 with the release of his highly praised mixtape, The Water. He returned one year later with a 9-track mixtape entitled Wave. Both of these projects feature production from OnGaud, KAYTRANADA, THEMPeople, and many others. These projects cemented the contemplative rapper as a top-tier lyricist in the rap game. Courtesy of Sam SchmiegIn 2016, Mick released his debut album, The Healing Component, an album all about different types of love. The album was not as well received as his previous work but still showed signs of artistic growth. Pieces of a Man is 17 tracks long, and includes features from Julien Bell, Mikahl Anthony, Ben Hixon, Ghostface Killah, and Corrine Bailey Rae, and BADBADNOTGOOD. The bulk of this album is filled with stellar jazz influenced production from THEMPeople and KAYTRANADA, and Black Milk. Courtesy of Google ImagesMick has always been a deeply conceptual artist; all of his projects have some sort of overarching meaning to them. Pieces of a Man is no different. The album doesn’t fail to provide a relevant message about self-identification that the listener can take from and reflect on over multiple listens. Pieces of a Man is about exactly what the title states, pieces of a man. Through incredible lyricism Mick is able to deliver raps that describe what it means to be a man, specifically a black man in 2018. On the track ‘Heron Flow 2’ Mick delivers a powerful spoken word poem that truly encapsulates what this album is trying to get across. “How is it that we’ve come to quantify the whole of a man, only by what he looks like in the light?” Pieces of a Man is available on Apple Music and Spotify, listen below: The post Mick Jenkins’ Sophomore Album ‘Pieces of a Man’ has Arrived appeared first on Verge Campus. Back in April of of 2017, Lamb of God guitarist Mark Morton tweeted a photo of himself with Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington and hinted that the guys were working on a new project together. Bennington confirming the news by sharing some lyrics in an Instagram story, which also revealed that producer Josh Wilbur was involved, as well. Sadly, Bennington died by suicide in July 2017, but Morton has posted an update on the project and promises the collaboration will be released at some point. “Chester and I made some really cool music together that we were both SUPER stoked about,” Morton wrote in a new tweet. “And you will hear it!” Chester and I made some really cool music together that we were both SUPER stoked about. And you will hear it! https://t.co/wsu0hmjBHH — Mark Morton (@MarkDuaneMorton) October 28, 2018 Morton’s initial tweet about the collaboration simply stated that the music the two were working on sounded “killer.” In other news, related news, Lamb of God drummer Chris Adler recently told Metal Injection that the band hopes to release a new album, the follow-up to 2015’s VII: Sturm und Drang, before Christmas of next year. “I got together with Josh (Wilbur, producer) a few weeks ago, and just documented some stuff they (Wilbur and guitarists Willie Adler and Mark Morton) had in the library of what they do,” Adler said. “Josh is coming out here at the end of November, for me and him to sift through it and find the ideal stuff, you know, that we both think is cool and we put the drums to it.” Behemoth's Top 5 Songs Metallica’s Top 5 Songs Tool’s Top 5 Music Videos Alice in Chains' Top 5 Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy” Annotated Video Source

Back in July, Smino dropped a two-song single and promised that more material would soon be on the way in the form of a new project. Now, it appears that project will be here next Thursday, November 8th. The St. Louis-born rapper revealed the release date via a series of video clips posted to Instagram. In them, he can be seen in the studio rapping a new, previously unreleased song tentatively titled, “Great Mind”. (Read: The Top 50 Albums of 2017) It’s unclear whether the teased project is simply the song itself, a mixtape, or a full-length album. But the Instagram location is labeled “Sophomore,” so it’s likely we’ll be receiving something related to his second album, the follow-up to Smino’s excellent 2017 debut, blkswn. Further adding fuel to the fire, one of the lyrics in “Great Mind” reads: “I said okay, fuck it November I’m droppin’ on the 8th like a Tre 5, Smino noir.” Genius, as well as a number of redditors, speculates this sophomore LP will be called Smino Noir. Check out the Instagram teasers below and start to get hyped. Revisit his two-song single from the summer: Source

Queensrÿche will return with a new album, The Verdict, on March 1st, 2019, via Century Media Records. The veteran band recorded the new tunes with Zeuss (Rob Zombie, Hatebreed, Iced Earth) at Uberbeatz in Lynwood, Washington, and Planet-Z in Wilbraham, Massachusetts. The album will be the band’s third to feature vocalist Todd La Torre, who took over the position after Geoff Tate was dismissed from the lineup. Following a legal battle over the name, the La Torre incarnation of the group won the rights to the Queensrÿche name, while Tate went on to tour under the name Operation: Mindcrime. “I’m extremely proud of what we were able to accomplish on this record,” La Torre said in a statement. “The relentless dedication and hard work of everyone involved has been very rewarding. I am excited and looking forward to it no longer just belonging to us, but belonging to the world. We hope you all enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it!” “The Verdict is the most metal and the most progressive record we have made in a long time,” added guitarist Michael “Whip” Wilton. “I couldn’t possibly be more excited for everyone to hear this.” Queensrÿche will also take The Verdict on the road for a spring U.S. headlining tour, kicking off March 2nd in Orlando, Florida, and running through an April 3rd date in Seattle. The trek will feature direct support from Fates Warning, with The Cringe opening up select shows. View the full itinerary of tour dates below. Look out, Wallace and Gromit – Open Mike Eagle’s coming for your seat. The Los Angeles-based rapper has just released his latest music video for “Microfiche”, taken from Mike’s new EP, What Happens When I Try to Relax. In the video, OME (animated in full Gumby Claymation-style by director/animator William Child) daydreams about everything from spending time with Colin Kaepernick, to driving a stake through a vampire’s heart, to racing his mind through the violent, divisive environment of the Trump era. Whether speeding through clouds to evade the police, or just contemplating his pot belly, the song’s refrain of “just shut your eyes, it can all go away” reflects Mike’s deeply understandable desire to escape from the terrifying world we live in – even if for a moment. Of course, Mike’s been busy outside of the new EP: he’s working with MST3K’s Baron Vaughn to create The New Negroes, a “stand-up meets-music variety show” set for launch on Comedy Central in 2019. What Happens When I Try to Relax is currently available on all major streaming services. Watch the music video for “Microfiche” below. Source

It’s been a little over a year since we last got an EP from Louis The Child, 2017’s fantastic Love Is Alive featuring the stellar Elohim collaboration of the same name. Now in 2018, the duo is back with a new EP entitled Kids At Play that easily gives Love Is Alive a run for its money. The EP is 9 tracks, so it could technically be an album, but LTC have chosen to classify it as an EP – perhaps because they already have a debut album in the works for 2019? That much is speculation, but it’s curious to see this as an EP nonetheless. Five tracks from the EP have already been released as singles, including the smash hit “Better Not” with Wafia and their new collaboration with Elohim, “LOVE.” The new tracks on the EP are all solo ventures, with the exception of “Save Me From Myself,” a massive collaboration with rising vocalist NoMBe and stars Big Gigantic. Overall, Kids At Play helps to solidify Louis The Child’s sound, which is uniquely pop-leaning but still heavily within dance music boundaries. The soft guitar strums and unassuming vocals on “Save Me From Myself,” for instance, belie the quirky and delicious drop right around the corner. And the most pop song on the EP, “Dear Sense” with MAX, for all its top 40 inclinations, still plays with that super saw synth in the drop ever so delicately and makes the track wonderfully dance-y. Kids At Play ends with the instrumental “Space Jam,” a delightful little ditty that caps off the album on a more subtle note. It’s not a grand finish, but it certainly doesn’t leave you wanting more, either. It’s an appetizing desertif after a wonderfully satisfying meal. Kids At Play is out now – stream it below! Last November, comedian Tim Heidecker compiled his numerous anti-Donald Trump songs into a collection called Too Dumb For Suicide. Nearly a year later, he’s back with a brand new offering for Trump and his blindly loyal supporters. Recorded with moving piano from composer Bobby Halvorson and contributions from Brother, Sister bassist Kiefo Nilsson, “Ballad of The Incel Man” sees Heidcecker taking on the persona of someone who might be attending a Trump rally in 2018. The title is maybe the cheapest shot in the whole thing, as the rest of the ballad is a pretty accurate depiction of the mindset of someone who definitely owns a MAGA hat. “Got my picture of Obama/ Which we’ll burn in Effigy/ And I hope I find a like minded girl tonight at the Trump rally,” he sings. Proceeds from Bandcamp sales of the single will benefit HIAS, the American nonprofit organization that provides humanitarian aid and assistance to refugees. (The group was mentioned throughout the social media posts of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooter, Robert Bowers.) Heidecker will match donations once they surpass $1,000; as of 10:30 AM EST, Heidecker tweeted that donations had reached the $500 mark. Take a listen to “Ballad of The Incel Man” below. Source

Perhaps the greatest proof that the scientific concept of entropy is an outright lie, America’s Funniest Home Videos (now abbreviated to AFV) is still on ABC’s airwaves after 29 seasons, trafficking in embarrassing home videos of parents getting hit in the nuts and children saying no-no words long after YouTube fail videos made the show irrelevant. Now, original host Bob Saget is coming back to ABC to launch an “edgier” video clip show to air later at night. Videos After Dark is set to be a raunchier, less family-friendly version of AFV, according to the network: “the hits are a little harder, the language a bit saltier, the animals a little less cute, the kids a tad less adorable and the embarrassing moments are way more revealing.” We can only guess what that truly means, but given Saget’s reputation as an edgy comic (one which clashes with the family-friendly persona he cultivated in the ’90s through Full House and the original run of AFV), the concept alone sounds like his kind of jam. Of course, Videos After Dark doesn’t seek to replace the original show; AFV was also renewed for a 30th and 31st (!) season, meaning the two shows will air in tandem. Senior VP of alternative, late night and specials at ABC Rob Mills says of the pairing, “AFV has been a fixture in households across America for decades, and we are so happy that this show still resonates. Now the generation that grew up with the hilarious Bob Saget as the host of AFV is old enough to stay up past 10 p.m. to see him on Videos After Dark.” No premiere date is set for Videos After Dark, which will be executive produced by Saget, longtime executive producer Vin Di Bona, and Michele Nasraway. In 1977, Carole King released a song titled “One”. Taken from her Simple Things album, the track encouraged people to unify and band together to fight social injustice. With the fate of the US government now again on the line, King has recorded a new version of the song, marking her first new recording in seven years. “The leader of our country is using rhetoric that is encouraging people to bring out their fear and hatred and violence, and I really feel we must do something to stop that,” King explained to The Guardian, “and I believe the Democratic party in our country is our hope for this now, because the Republican party is pretty much rubber-stamping – or if they’re not rubber-stamping, they’re saying nothing, which makes them, in my view, complicit in stirring up the worst emotions, in promoting lies: outright, provable lies.” “That does not make me unpatriotic or disloyal,” she added. “I’m the honest opposition and I support the honest opposition to what the government in my country is standing for today.” King, who lives in rural Idaho, elaborated further in a press statement: “I live in a red state. Many of my neighbors are Trump voters. I’ve noticed over the years that when someone in the community is in need, neighbors with only two dollars in their pocket will give a dollar to help out. As I watch the leader of our country dividing us with rhetoric that elicits fear and hatred and emboldens some of his supporters to commit acts of violence, I believe that most of us across party lines have the capacity for compassion. I believe that most of us care about our neighbors, and that most of us want Love to win. I see ‘One (2018)’ as an antidote to fear, hatred, and violence. I hope the song will empower everyone who hears it to know that he or she can make a difference.” For the new recording, King returned to the same studio, A&M Recording Studio B, and even the same piano, used for her 1971 album, Tapestry. The idea for the new version came when she was asked to play a short set at a luncheon for nine female House of Representatives candidates. Check it out below. King has long been a politically outspoken musician. She previously supported both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. In January 2017, just mere weeks after Trump’s election, King participated in the Women’s March in Idaho, carrying a sign that read, “One Small Voice.” “I’ve never stopped believing that one small voice plus millions of other small voices is exactly how we change the world,” she told Huffington Post of the message. King is just the latest celebrity to voice her support for the Democratic party in the midterm elections. Over the weekend, both rapper Travis Scott and NBA star LeBron James encouraged their fans to vote for prospective Texas senator Beto O’Rourke. Source

Two years ago at Tomorrowland, San Holo began a movement. Someone gifted him a plant, a very unassuming organism, and he brought it on stage during the live stream whereupon he announced, “Yo someone just got me this plant, make some noise for this plant.” We could have never assumed that trivial moment would cascade into what it is today: a group of producers’ plant on Twitter, all acting as sentient beings, interacting with one another and sometimes vowing to take over the world. The bulk of the accounts were dug up by Dance Music NW, but we assume there are more lurking in the depths with growing numbers every week. The first tweet surfaced a day after the San Holo video did, this past January. Helo I am plant yes — SanHolo'sPlant (@SanHolosPlant) January 14, 2018 It was four days before the next appeared. all the plants will soon takeover — Dabin’s Plant (@DabinsPlant) January 18, 2018 From there, anyone with plant-related tendencies received their own accounts. Earlier this year, “Weird Al” Yankovic toured a stripped-down set consisting primarily his original tracks instead of his iconic parodies. Now, the king of parody polka is going in the complete opposite direction, as he’s announced plans for a 2019 North American tour featuring a full symphony orchestra at each stop. Following the “The Ridiculously Self-Indulgent Ill-Advised Vanity Tour”, the forthcoming trek has been dubbed the “Strings Attached” tour. In an Instagram post, the Weird One called the planned shows his “most full-blown, over-the-top extravaganza ever.” That includes a different orchestra at each stop, either an official philharmonic ensemble or a collection of local musicians. What’s more, the tour will mark the first time Al has performed with female backing vocalists, with Lisa Popeil, Monique Donnelly, and Scottie Haskell (all of whom have featured on his studio recordings) joining him on stage. The shows promise all the costumes, props, and parody hits of past “Weird Al” tours, only this time amped up by the biggest bands with which he’s ever played. Dates will be announced on November 12th, with ticket on-sale beginning November 16th. In the mean time, revisit recordings from all 77 “Ridiculously Self-Indulgent” shows, plus a supercut of all the songs he covered during the tour. Source

Although I’m not much of a gamer, even I knew of the Red Dead Redemption 2 craze over the weekend — friends were conspicuously MIA, social media was flooded with references, you name it. Apparently, the new video game didn’t just offer players a third installment in the Red Dead series, it also delivered one heck of a gift to music fans: the first bit of new material from D’Angelo since 2014’s Black Messiah. The R&B singer’s contribution is called “Unshaken” (full title: “May I? Standing Unshaken – Oh Traveller Have a Seat”). The song wasn’t officially listed in the credits for the Red Dead Redemption 2 soundtrack, which boasts the likes of Arca and Colin Stetson, but was discovered by close listeners between “Paradise Mercifully Departed” and “Dear Uncle Tacitus” missions in Chapter 5 of the story, as MissInfo points out. (Read: The 100 Greatest Debut Singles of All Time) A video game rip of “Unshaken” was uploaded to YouTube, but also appears on a new BBC playlist, so this thing officially does exist. It’s possible D’Angelo was destined all along to be part of the Red Dead world; as Twitter users noted in 2015, the outfit he wore for his 2015 Saturday Night Live performance looked like something straight out of the Western-themed game. Take a listen to “Unshaken” below. Yikes, High on Fire frontman Matt Pike needs a partial amputation of his toe, forcing the band to drop of the upcoming “Speed of the Wizard Tour” with co-headliners Municipal Waste. The trek, which also features Toxic Holocaust and Haunt, will still go on as scheduled, minus High on Fire. The band’s full statement reads as follows: “Matt has a medical emergency culminating in the partial amputation of one of his toes. The scheduling of this procedure is immediate and the recovery time will overlap our intended tour with Municipal Waste. We will unfortunately be unable to participate in this tour but will be back stronger than ever in 2019!” The tour launches this Friday, November 2nd, in Dallas, Texas, and is scheduled through a November 26th show in Santa Ana, California. Earlier this month, John Carpenter joined our Halloweenies podcast, where he teased a number of tricks and treats. One of the gooey tidbits was that Shudder was interested in possibly turning his 1987 underrated classic Prince of Darkness into a series. However, that wasn’t all Shudder wanted from Carpenter. No, he also claimed the company tapped him to write a new theme for their streaming service, and that’s exactly what he did as the Master of Horror has shared a new track aptly titled, “Shudder”. “We wanted to create a one-of-a-kind audio identity for Shudder and the first person we thought of was John Carpenter,” says Shudder GM Craig Engler in a statement. “We approached John and to our delight, he was enthusiastic about the idea and came up with an iconic theme that will enchant and thrill Shudder members every time they hear it.” Five seconds of the theme will appear in front of Shudder’s content starting this Wednesday on Halloween. If you recall, in 1978, Carpenter directed a movie called Halloween. Pretty cool. Carpenter’s had a hell of a month. His brutal score is currently scaring millions of fans across the world as David Gordon Green’s Halloween smashes the box office to hell, while two of his most iconic works — Halloween and 1980’s The Fog — are out stalking theaters with new 4K restorations. What’s more, Film Editor Dominick Suzanne-Mayer’s own Filmography podcast series just spent the last five weeks dissecting each one of the filmmaker’s works. Vancouver based record label Westwood Recordings drops a 25-track compilation album to celebrate their 100th release. The innovative bass music company is known for introducing an assorted roster of global talent. Westwood dabbles in but is certainly not restricted to glitch hop, funk, drum & bass, breaks, and others. Their latest record showcases their diverse music style and includes some of their all-star producers. The 100th release features The Funk Hunters, Stickybuds, K+Lab, Opiuo, Krafty Kuts and more. Introducing free-formed funk & bass master Stickybuds: We had a chance to chat with Tyler Martens AKA Stickybuds who was featured on the record. Highly praised for his energy inducing sets, Stickybuds is known to light up the dance floor wherever he goes. The Calgary resident flawlessly weaves various music styles throughout his mixes, original tracks, and remixes. His versatile approach sets him a part from the rest. He has rocked stages across North America, Europe, and beyond. He’s played at Burning Man, Envision, Breakfest, and over 14 years at Shambhala. With his recent debut LP, Take A Stand, Stickybuds not only intends to make you move, but also to think. The album touches on topics of corruption, lobbyists, injustice, and planetary issues. He sends an awakening message to the world that is laid over infectious funky beats. Stickybuds paves his way to be a leader in west coast bass music that will always deliver a groove. photo credit StickyBuds Stickybuds Drops Knowledge on Genre Bending, His Latest Album, and His Inspirations. Your music style ranges between funk, breakbeat, reggae, drum & bass, glitch hop, and soul. What genre influenced you to begin creating your own music? The first tunes I started writing back in 2008 were party break tracks with lots of samples from the golden age of funk. Guys like A.Skillz, Featurecast and Fort Knox Five were huge influences at that time for the tunes I was writing. How did you learn how to cohesively blend all of these styles into one? It was just a gradual progression over the years of taking production and musical skills to blend genres together in my sets. It’s heavily routed in music theory, and once you have a grasp of staying in key signatures and utilizing acapellas and stems you can do a lot with genre bending and creativity. You released your conscious and politically awakening album, Take a Stand on July 20, 2018. Do you think recording your album in several locations worldwide impacted the music differently as opposed to recording it in one country? For sure, one of the greatest things about traveling and meeting these different artists, and traveling in general is that you get a much wider knowledge of world affairs and points of view to tap into. For the most part though every country is dealing with similar struggles, all mostly relating back to the corruption of our governments and economic systems. I’ve noticed you’ve always implemented short, positive messages in your live sets; what prompted you to finally create a socially conscious full-length album? I wanted to make an album that encompassed the messages that I was passionate about, and would hopefully live on past me being on this planet. That’s the great thing about music, once it’s out, it’s always there, somewhere forever. What is your favorite track from the album and why? “Crooked Politicians” is my favorite track. I wrote the vocals and sang a demo of it, had Richard sing it properly for the record, and just in general I felt the most strongly about it. However looking back at the record in it’s entirety now my actual favorite song to listen to is “Heavy Load”. I felt the production and all the session musicians and the singing just all came together really nicely on that one. David Rodigan actually just played it on his BBC Radio 1 Extra reggae show, which is a massive honor. Who are some influential political leaders that you are currently following? Julian Assange for sure and everyone at Wikileaks. Julian’s done more for truth journalism than most and has had his life completely ruined for shedding light on all the corruption going on. I feel for him and his family, and I hope we can help get him free. Sadly there aren’t many politicians around right now that I see that are genuine. I still follow Ron Paul as he consistently speaks truth and calls out the corruption, never ending wars, rigged economy, etc. Usually politicians put on a good show but when it comes to actually changing anything, it’s just the same old playbook. The last politician in America that tried to change things for the better had his brains blown out for the world to see. Who are some positive conscious music artists that have inspired you? Thievery Corporation has been a huge influence to me. It’s an amazing project of so many great musicians, and so many amazing songs over the years. They have always carried a banner of justice and revolt against the systems in place. Never shying away from the harder truths. How did you feel when your track with K+Lab, “Clap Yo Hands” was going to be featured in the trailer of Spiderman: Homecoming? It felt great to get an email out of nowhere from Sony wanting to use our song for one of the biggest franchises of our time. The money I got from that I used to make this album, and pay all my artists and singers best I could. You’ve played at some of the biggest festivals across the world like: Glastonbury, Burning Man, Envision, Electric Forest, and Boomtown! What is one of your favorite moments while playing/attending any of these festivals? There are so many amazing memories and experiences that I am super grateful for, I have a hard time picking out favorites honestly. It’s been such an amazing ride so far experiencing so many amazing places around the world. You’ve played at Shambhala for 14 years and even contributed to the Fractal Forest stage by repainting the large Chewbacca head. It is obvious this festival means something to you. Is there anything you’d like to share about Shambhala with new and returning attendees? Shamb is my home, and from volunteering there in the early days many of us helped build things that are still there to this day. Then in turn the festival helped us build our careers and gave us an outlet to shine and do what we love. I’m eternally grateful to Rich who runs the Fractal Forest for the opportunity to play every year. There is nothing I prioritize more and work harder on than my Shambhala set. Fractal Forest at Shambhala – Photo via Facebook If you could collaborate with anyone in the world (dead or alive) who would it be and why? That’s such a hard question. I think I’ll skip the obvious choices like Bob Marley or Freddie Mercury and go with Bill Hicks. He was an amazing comedian and truth teller, and I’d want to make a trip hop truth comedy album with him to help break through to people. Is there anything else you’d like to add? Thanks for the interview, and thanks to the people who listen to my music. Stoked to make more and grow. Clutch were slated to play the second of a two-night stand with Sevendust and Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown on Saturday night (October 27th) at Irving Plaza in New York City, but were forced to cancel their gig after frontman Neil Fallon passed out on the streets of Secaucus, New Jersey, earlier that day. The band’s Friday night show at the venue went off without a hitch, but the next day Fallon went for a stroll in New Jersey, and suddenly fainted. He was rushed to a hospital after being tended to by police officers and emergency personnel. The frontman detailed the incident in a series of tweets: Regarding tonight’s cancellation at Irving Plaza. It’s me. Again. In the early afternoon I went for a stroll. I became light headed and dizzy. Next thing I knew I was coming to on my back in a puddle of water with 2 Secaucus policemen and paramedics staring down at me. — Neil Fallon (@npfallon) October 27, 2018 I took a header on the sidewalk. Was taken to the ER. Thankfully, both the EKG and CAT scan came back normal. I was diagnosed with something called “Near-Syncope,” which, as far as I can tell, is the medical term for “We have no idea why you passed out, but ya did.” — Neil Fallon (@npfallon) October 27, 2018 Apologies to all the folks who made plans to come to the show but the doc says no. Believe me, no one is more pissed about this than I. We’ll be on tour for quite some time in 2019 and we’ll certainly try to get an Irving Plaza date in there. — Neil Fallon (@npfallon) October 27, 2018 One last note, the EMT, Paul, is a huge Clutch fan. It was good to meet you, Paul. You’re on the guest list for life. Thank you. — Neil Fallon (@npfallon) October 27, 2018 The Saturday show still went on without Clutch, as Sevendust and Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown performed their sets at Irving Plaza. Fans who didn’t want to attend the show without Clutch performing were offered refunds. Clutch’s tour resumed last night in Philadelphia, with the band making the announcement that the show was on in the afternoon. Dates for all upcoming gigs can be seen here. Shows are all scheduled as planned. Playing in Philadelphia tonight. #righbackatit — Clutch (@clutchofficial) October 28, 2018 We had a photographer at the first Irving Plaza show on Friday night. Stay tuned for our photo gallery from that concert. Source
