Brooklyn-born rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine has been sentenced to four years of probation for violating the terms of a plea agreement related to a 2015 case in which he pled guilty to using a child in a sexual performance. In addition to avoiding jail time, he also won’t be required to register as a sexual offender. Judge Felicia A. Mennin made her ruling this afternoon in a Manhattan courthouse. As part of the sentencing, 6ix9ine will also need to complete 1000 hours of community service. Additionally, he must “refrain from gang affiliation and the posting or reposting online sexually explicit or violent images of women or children,” as Pitchfork reports. Born Daniel Hernandez, 6ix9ine was originally facing up to three years behind bars for what prosecutors believe was a violation of a plea agreement originally made three years ago. In October 2015, the MC pled guilty to the use of a child in a sexual performance. Per the agreement, 6ix9nine was required to not commit another crime for two years, or else he could face prison time and be forced to register as a sex offender. Since then, however, 6ix9ine has been arrested for misdemeanor assault, driving with a suspended license, and allegedly assaulting a police officer. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office argued these arrests represent a violation of the plea agreement, and this past August, requested that the presiding judge hold 6ix9ine accountable. Source

Most fans winced when composer Alan Howarth injected some rock into John Carpenter’s iconic Halloween theme as the sequels piled up. However, any self-respecting rock fan would agree that this heavy metal cover by guitarist Jason Richardson is quite awesome. In celebration of the spooky holiday and the current box office champ, the former guitarist for Chelsea Grin and Born Of Osiris linked up with Ernie Ball for this wild cover that finds him sporting the same mask being used in David Gordon Green’s new film. Not only does the video have a nice analog aesthetic, no doubt a reference to those lazy VHS days of the ’80s, but Richardson delivers a good Shape. Slowly, he moves in and out of the shadows, similar to Dick Warlock in the original 1981 sequel. Watch below. If you can’t get enough and aren’t ready to leave Haddonfield quite yet, be sure to subscribe to Halloweenies, our Michael Myers podcast that recently covered every film in the franchise. Next month, they’ll head to Rob Zombie’s remakes. Subscribe via iTunes | Spotify | Google Play | Stitcher | Podchaser | RSS Source

The party may be over, but Billie Eilish’s career has just begun. 16-year-old Billie Eilish has been making waves in the music industry since her 2016 major label debut with Gold-certified single “Ocean Eyes”. The LA-based singer-songwriter has acquired over 475 million views on YouTube, collaborations with the likes of Vince Staples and Khalid, and a cult following of fans that worship her. The single cover for “when the party’s over”, artwork by Soto.Eilish released “when the party’s over” on October 17th to widespread acclaim from critics and fans. The lamenting piano track highlights Eilish’s emotive vocals at their most delicate, with precise high notes feeling like the songstress is moments from shattering. Penned by Eilish herself alongside her brother and frequent collaborator Finneas O’Connell, the lyrics muse on an unhealthy relationship and trying to delude oneself into being happy. The accompanying visual, released on October 25th, is as simple as can be in concept. The 3-minute video takes place in one take, featuring a bare white room and barely any movement. Eilish drinks from a cup with pitch-black liquid inside and her eyes begin gushing the same black liquid as the song comes to a close. That’s the whole video— and it is positively captivating. Source: YoutubePerhaps it’s the cinematography, the stark black and white contrasts, Eilish’s understated charisma, or some magical combination of these and other factors. Personally, what I find so appealing about the artist’s videography is her commitment to her own visual world. All of her videos take place in a minimalist universe somewhere beyond the realm of reality, yet authentic all the same. The dark, borderline grotesque imagery that would potentially remain subtle with a different backdrop becomes embellished with this simplistic world. Eilish does a fantastic job at bringing her songs and the universe they live in to light through her videos, and “when the party’s over” is another imagery delight. Billie Eilish is currently on tour and stopping by the Boston House of Blues next Friday (November 2nd). The show may be sold out, but resale tickets are available HERE. In the spring of 2017, word came that Sony was working on a sequel to the 1986 Jim Henson cult classic Labyrinth. Considering the passing of that film’s star, David Bowie, it seemed probable that the film would be some sort of spinoff instead of a full reboot or direct sequel. However, in a new interview with Fandango (via NME), director Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe, The Girl in the Spider’s Web) contradicted those reports in his first update on the project in months. “I was actually having lunch yesterday with [producer] Lisa Henson and we reconnected with that project,” said Alvarez. “We’re very excited about it. It is basically a direct continuation of the first movie many years later, and I can’t tell you much more about it… but we have a script, and we’re very excited about it so we’ll see where that goes.” (Read: The 25 Most Anticipated Films of Fall 2018) That phrase “direct continuation” means the movie is indeed a sequel, though “many years later” hints that it could easily be done without any of the original cast or characters, including Bowie’s Jareth the Goblin King and Jennifer Connelly’s teenaged protagonist, Sarah. According to IMDb, Alvarez himself broke the story, with Larry Brenner taking an early crack at the script and screenwriters Jay Basu (The Girl in the Spider’s Web, the upcoming Charlie’s Angels reboot) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Marvel) credited as screenwriters. While Alvarez said he’s “very excited about” the movie, he admitted that “it takes time and effort to put those movies together because they’re larger than life.” With that in mind, he added that nothing is set in stone. “You never know, and really right now, I’m just finishing with this film [Spider’s Web] so I’m not even thinking about what I’m going to do next. But all I can tell you is that I had lunch with her yesterday and it was great.” Tl;dr: Labyrinth 2 is very much still in the cards, but it’s no guarantee when or if the hand will be dealt. Even if it doesn’t come to fruition, fans could still potentially see more of Hanson’s world; Brian Henson revealed earlier this year that a stage musical adaptation of the original film is also in the works. Wolfgang Gartner has had one of the most brilliant comebacks in EDM history. Though he never completely left, his heyday is long gone… or was? With new support from management at ALT:VISION and a reinvigorated passion for the musical style that brought him notoriety in the first place, Gartner is making a massive break for the top. In 2018 alone, he dropped a collab with k?d; his song “Ching Ching” received massive radio support and is now featured in Microsoft’s racing game Forza Horizon 4; and his single “The Upside Down” with JayKode hit the viral charts in the U.S. Now, he’s following it all up with a new single “Deja Vu” and an official EP announcement. Longtime fans of Gartner are sure to immediately recognize the sounds and styles incorporated into “Deja Vu” – perhaps that’s part of the reason for its title? It all feels like we’ve heard this before. But until mimicry, this is deja vu… the feeling of nostalgia is there with a fresh coat of paint and, like we said before, reinvigorated passion. Along with the new single, Gartner has officially announced his next EP, Medicine, out November 2. No word yet on tracklist or collaborators, but with only one week to go, we don’t have to wait long to find out! This article was first published on Your EDM. Aside from Stranger Things 3, there’s nothing more exciting coming to television next year than Jordan Peele’s reimagining of The Twilight Zone for CBS All Access. Already, we’ve seen a short teaser trailer, which gives us a preview of Peele channeling his inner Rod Serling, and now comes word that, yes, the original series’ source material is up for grabs and will undoubtedly get another 21st century facelift. According to Deadline, Parks and Recreation star and ’90s alternative rock superfan Adam Scott has climbed aboard a remake of Nightmare At 20,000 Feet for the series, only this time it’ll be titled Nightmare at 30,000 Feet. Diehard fans, of course, will remember the iconic season five episode, which starred William Shatner as a sweaty passenger, whose own fear of flight materializes in the form of a gremlin he can only see. Here’s the thing, though: George Miller already delivered an incredible remake in what was one of the better segments of the series’ 1983 hit-or-miss anthology movie. John Lithgow injected even more paranoia to the role, while the original gremlin, which looked like the cock-hungry dog from The Shining, was transformed into an entirely different, unnerving creature. So, yeah, this will really have to soar to take off. Then again, given Peele’s pedigree for both parody and social commentary, there’s little doubt he’ll succeed. After all, this particular chapter of The Twilight Zone is ripe for a modern incarnation, what with all the changes to flying in our post-9/11 society. Perhaps Scott suspects a terrorist is on the flight, and yet also fears of racial profiling, having to debate the consequences of calling someone out? See, not too hard. Still, it’s somewhat disappointing that this series is even mining older material. Peele is such a prolific writer, and Get Out is arguably the greatest Twilight Zone episode in nearly five decades, so here’s hoping these remakes are only relegated to one per season. As Deadline also confirms, actress Sanaa Lathan has also signed on to star in the episode “Rewind”, which doesn’t appear to have any connections. Nevertheless, we’re waiting. Eagerly. Source

SoundCloud recently rolled out a new track monetization feature for independent creators — but users should be wary of the terms and conditions attached to the deal. The Verge dug up said terms and conditions and received feedback from industry professionals. Across the board, they found the contract to be more favorable to the platform than the artists. While SoundCloud does offer a means for musicians to get paid for their work, it could be an unfair deal for the artists who get involved with the monetization program. “This agreement,” media attorney Jeff Becker says, “will allow artists to monetize the exploitation of their music on SoundCloud only if the artist agrees to forego all existing claims he or she may have against the company.” Not only does the fine print make it impossible to sue SoundCloud and difficult to challenge pay statements, the platform has the power to switch up terms on payout without any negotiation. The flexible percentages spell out a startling worst-case scenario for artists… “SoundCloud can say, hey we might change this and we don’t have to give you notice other than just posting it on the service,” explains artist manager Josh Kaplan. “Not even an email. You could just wake up and they could say, actually now the share is 25 percent. And if you didn’t check in online on your SoundCloud [account] you would have no way of knowing. How would you know to opt out, until you got a statement? And you don’t know when you’re getting [the statement] because they’re ambiguous about that.” As the contract is dissected, there are more and more red flags that pop up. SoundCloud monetization might not be a bad thing for independent creators, but signing these terms and conditions also doesn’t seem to be in any given artist’s best interests. Each week we break down our favorite song, highlight our honorable mentions, and wrap them all up with other staff recommendations into a playlist just for you. For someone whose signature line started out as, “Bitch, you can’t fuck with me if you wanted to,” Cardi B definitely doesn’t mess around. She’s always been upfront with us, a presence of stone-cold, straightforward fearlessness inaugurated on Gangsta Bitch Music Vol. 1 and cemented earlier this year on her breakout debut studio album, Invasion of Privacy. “Money” keeps up the trend. In the months since Invasion of Privacy, not only has she collaborated with artists like Maroon 5 and Pardison Fontaine, she’s also had a baby: Kulture, her daughter with rapper Offset of Migos. Motherhood comes up several times in “Money,” as Cardi raps, “I got a baby/ I need some money,” and “I’m Dasani with the drip/ Baby mommy with the clip.” She references her daughter by name with the line, “Nothing in this world that I like more than Kulture.” But the lyric that stands out the most from this irresistibly catchy, self-assured track comes from the chorus: “I was born to flex.” Never has this been truer. 2018 has seen Cardi B reach a record-breaking No. 1 on the Hot 100 with “I Like It”, become a mother, and put out an incredible debut album, and she’s kept her fearless attitude up through all of it. “Money” is her promise that we don’t need to worry about that changing anytime soon. –Laura Dzubay Contributing Writer _______________________________________________________ Honorable Mentions Beach House – “Alien” Beach House released the one-off single “Alien” this week, a song not on their recent album, 7, that bangs just as hard as every song included, and fuses the group’s typical synth soundscapes with a hauntingly warm melody that ebbs and flows through several movements of rock, electronica, and much more. –Clara Scott Action Bronson – “Prince Charming” “I finally found love, and it’s beautiful,” Action Bronson says at the opening of new track “Prince Charming”, a ’90s old-school fever dream that weaves Bronson’s ruminations on love and relationships with his air-tight flow and a soul-inspired beat complete with backup singers. –Clara Scott Neil Young – “Campaigner” The first single off of Neil Young’s upcoming live album, Songs for Judy, is “Campaigner”, a meditation on the Nixon era recorded in 1976 that carries Young’s classic acoustic stylings and unforgettable voice with a poignant political message that brings the listener right back to the show it was taken from, watching a legend in reverence. –Clara Scott Troye Sivan and Jónsi – “Revelation” “Revelation“, Troye Sivan and Jónsi’s collaboration for the Boy Erased soundtrack, is a work of art with the emotional power of cinema without the image; Sivan’s vocals are understated in all the right ways, and above the ambient instrumentation of the track it feels like looking through the car window on a long trip through the rain. –Clara Scott EURINGER feat. Grimes – “The Medicine Does Not Control Me” EURINGER and Grimes team up to create a dystopian dreamland with “The Medicine Does Not Control Me“, an intense dance track that touts Grimes’ ethereal aura along with an industrial edge, evolving into a song that could easily fit in both at a goth club or EDM festival — it’s the inability to put your finger on the pulse of “Medicine” that makes it so entrancing. –Clara Scott _________________________________________________________ Other Songs We’re Spinning Bob Mould – “Sunshine Rock” On the same day that pipe bombs turned up at the doorsteps of several high-profile American political figures, Bob Mould returned with a full-throttle garage jam called “Sunshine Rock” that allows listeners to thrash about with a smile on their faces and hope in their hearts. –Matt Melis Allen Stone feat. Jamie Lidell – “Taste of You” Some may say soul music is dead, but if Allen Stone is any proof, it’s alive and well: the bluesy singer’s newest single, “Taste of You”, hearkens back to ’60s soul with all the swagger and class of the modern day. –Clara Scott The Beatles – “While My Guitar Gently Weeps – Acoustic Version / Take 2” A noteworthy addition to an already extensive catalogue, this previously unreleased version of the White Album classic makes it feel like you’re right there in the studio with George Harrison, sitting in on the making of an introverted masterpiece: a feeling at once eerie and elegant. –Laura Dzubay Gentle Hen – “Lean, Then Catch Your Fall” Our favorite Northampton, Massachusetts, outfit returns with a glowing strummer off their new album, Be Nice to Everyone, that stretches out across four minutes with swells and warm harmonies that feel like a shoulder to lean on in lonely times. –Matt Melis _________________________________________________________ This Week’s Playlist Source

Well, Hank Azaria will have one less character to voice on The Simpsons: The series is reportedly cutting out Apu Nahasapeemapetilon from any future episodes following mounting controversy over its racial stereotyping, especially following Hari Kondabolu’s 2017 documentary The Problem with Apu. The news comes from an IndieWire interview with producer Adi Shankar, who spearheaded a campaign earlier this year attempting to solve the show’s “Apu Problem” by crowdsourcing a script that he hoped Fox would produce. That hope was for naught, however, as Shankar now reports that, “I’ve verified from multiple sources now: They’re going to drop the Apu character altogether. They aren’t going to make a big deal out of it, or anything like that, but they’ll drop him altogether just to avoid the controversy.” Shankar says his sources include two people who work for the series and another who works directly with creator Matt Groening. IndieWire also reached out to Fox, who cryptially responded, writing, “Apu appeared in the 10/14/18 episode ‘My Way or the Highway to Heaven,'” which is incredibly suspicious given that Apu only appears in a single shot with characters gathered around God (see below). Earlier this year, the series bit their thumb at the controversy with “No Good Read Goes Unpunished”, which found Lisa and Marge debating over a book titled The Princess in the Garden, which had been edited by the family matriarch to be as unobjectionable as possible. By the end, Lisa addresses the TV audience directly, saying, “Something that started decades ago and was applauded and inoffensive is now politically incorrect. What can you do?” Following the episode, Groening also responded to the controversy, saying: “I’m proud of what we do on the show. And I think it’s a time in our culture where people love to pretend they’re offended.” Of course, Azaria didn’t share those sentiments and told Stephen Colbert that he would be “perfectly happy and willing to step aside,” adding, “listening to voices means inclusion in the writer’s room. I really want to see Indians, South Asian writers in the room. Not in a token way, but genuinely informing whatever new direction this character may take. Including how it is voiced, or not voiced.” Shankar feels the decision to outright delete the character is a poor one. “If you are a show about cultural commentary and you are too afraid to comment on the culture, especially when it’s a component of the culture you had a hand in creating, then you are a show about cowardice,” he says. “It’s not a step forward, or step backwards, it’s just a massive step sideways. After having read all these wonderful scripts, I feel like sidestepping this issue doesn’t solve it when the whole purpose of art, I would argue, is to bring us together.” In the same interview, Shankar argues that his crowdsourcing “was never meant to be an attack against anyone,” and goes on to praise the winning script by Vishaal Buch, calling it “clever and authentic.” As IndieWire notes, the script would bring Apu from a “single store owner to a thriving businessman in Springfield” and would involve “other prominent Indian Americans in hilarious ways to highlight the importance of diversity and individuality.” He says he’ll produce the episode through his Bootleg Universe YouTube page. Currently, The Simpsons is amidst its 30th season on Fox. Source

The Glitch Mob‘s See Without Eyes is already one of our favorite albums of the year — and it just got even better. The deluxe version rocks remixes from 1788-L, Salva, 29 Palms and more, plus that glitchy good good from Rezz that she previously dropped on us. We must put strong emphasis on 1788-L’s rework of “Disintegrate Slowly,” because it’s one of the producer’s most commanding releases yet. He eases into the mix with booming, echoed percussion and just a hint of The Glitch Mob’s signature sound, before releasing into a heavy yet balanced drop that discovers a truly one-of-a kind sound. There are a lot more remixes to be heard, but don’t you dare skip ahead before the second drop. KMLN’s “Keep On Breathing” makes for another of our favorite productions, with its extra vibey energy. Tsuruda,’s take on “How Could This Be Wrong” has an unexpected switch up, powering forward with a bold and dreamy breed of house. Machinedrum goes crazy on “Enter Formless,” mixing delicate vocals with fierce drum patterns. This is only scratching the surface on all the extras included on The Glitch Mob’s deluxe release. The full album and all of its official remixes are included in this 23-track collection. With synths sizzling and the club floor cleared, The Faint have returned with their first new song since 2016. It’s titled “Chameleon Nights” and finds the Omaha outfit pumping out nearly four minutes of busy, frantic dance-punk. “I can’t face the horror, I can’t take the chameleon nights,” the band’s Todd Fink sings with anxiety, his vocals eventually drowned out by a dark whirlwind of stabbing percussion. As one might surmise from its tone and subject matter (fake vs. real, truth vs. lies), the song is “unmistakably shaped by the world of today,” per a press statement. Over the summer, Cake hit the road with Ben Folds and successfully delivered one of the season’s most anticipated live shows. Last month, they quietly released a cover of Roger Miller’s “Reincarnation”. Now, they’ve shared their first new, original song in seven years. The offering is titled, “Sinking Ship”, and marks Cake’s first new material since the 2011 album, Showroom of Compassion. According to instrumentalist and backing vocalist Vince DiFiore, the track is “a sobering meditation on the current human habitation of the planet.” He added, “Where do we go from here? It’s always worth contemplating.” Frontman John McCrea spoke more on the song and how Cake are doing their part to improve conditions throughout the world: “We are happy to be releasing new music; this time in the form of a series of singles. ‘Sinking Ship’ is quite pessimistic but somehow does not seem hyperbolic right now. All proceeds from the sale of this song will be donated to Doctors Without Borders. CAKE is proud to be able to help out in securing real leadership for the United States. It is a critical time for the world, and it is more important than ever to find leaders capable of putting country above self-interest. Real greatness comes from community, cooperation and ethical leadership.” Check it out below via its official music video. Helmed by longtime collaborator Owen Streeter, it’s a stop-motion clip featuring clay characters. A press statement notes that Cake plan to release more singles in the lead-up to a proper full-length album. The band also has a series of European tour dates already lined up for early 2019. Insomniac Drops Details on the Return of CAMP EDC in 2019 Plan on arriving as early as possible on Thursday to enter CAMP EDC because last year proved the car checks to be way more time consuming than anyone had anticipated. But after you put in your time going through Insomniac’s thorough security checks with every car of attendees checking in for the weekend, you won’t have to sacrifice your precious EDC time for traveling to and from the festival, going through security checks, and waiting in those epic festival lines at the main gates of Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It may take up to 8 hours going through this first initial check-in process, but afterwards you’ll find your camping spot amongst many decorated car windows of other Electric Daisy Carnival campers whom you’ll be sharing with your weekend with Under The Electric Sky. BTW this is not a millennial white-girl over-exaggeration for dramatic affect; CAMP EDC truly took 8 hours of stop and go traffic to even get int0 the festival campgrounds, so come EXPECTING & PREPARED to spend a full workday checking into the playground. But, its fun, the energy is high and love is fully alive. Also, I think all of Camp EDC 2018 would agree it was well worth the 8 hour check-in, going through Insomniac’s dedicated process to safety through their thorough car security searches. Once you’re inside the campgrounds, all of your worries will disappear, and you’ll hardly remember the long wait lines you just endured to get to your home for the weekend. photo credit EDC 2019 photo credit EDC 2019 Just the same as CAMP EDC 2018 required, all headliners are required to have purchased both a camping pass and festival ticket in order to receive entry to CAMP EDC. You must be at least 18 years of age. Camping passes are for all 4 days, & single day camping passes are unavailable. Headliners will experience some MAJOR benefits including a dedicated campers-only festival entrance. Avoid the staggering long lines. The best of all will be the privilege of going in and out of EDC at your own leisure during festival hours. photo credit EDC 2019 photo credit EDC 2019 The campsites will offer free showers, bathrooms, and drinking water; and for headliners‘ convenience, a General Store will be open for the entirety of CAMP EDC. Extensive video from last year’s debut camping experience, including the air-conditioned shift-pods, pool parties, goat yoga, exclusive camp performances, and more are showcased in the official EDC trailer for the 2019 festival. If Insomniac‘s video trailers for CAMP EDC & the actual festival don’t make your heart go aflutter, as goosebumps surge throughout your body, then you might not know what a Good Time is. CAMP EDC Passes are ON-SALE NOW for EDC Las Vegas 2019! This year, an option for GA+ makes an appearance, featuring added amenities for headliners holding these tickets. Head to the official EDC website to check out possible pricing options for EDC Las Vegas 2019 festival and camping passes, including layaway options for headliners who’d rather opt out of paying up front for their festival experience, in favor of making a couple smaller, more-manageable payments to secure their one-of-a-kind festival experience that awaits them in May of 2019. Just like last year, EDC Las Vegas will take place a whole month earlier in the year, providing for cooler weather and minimizing the emergencies caused by heat exhaustion from the Las Vegas desert. Stellar Circuits unveil video for new song “Skylights”: Watch
News posted a topic in DJ Headquarters
North Carolina progressive-rock outfit Stellar Circuits are set to release their new album, Ways We Haunt, on November 9th, and the band has teamed up with Heavy Consequence to debut the video for the new song “Skylights” (watch below). Stellar Circuits have an experimental/prog vibe that calls to mind a band like A Perfect Circle. The album is produced by Jamie King, who has helmed releases by Between the Buried and Me and The Contortionist, among others. Of the song “Skylights”, singer Ben Beddick tells us, “The meaning behind ‘Skylights’ stems from its name. It comes from the idea of using the word as a double entendre. In one sense, it’s used to describe lights in the sky shining down and guiding us towards our destination. It’s also intended to be used as a metaphor to represent a window to the sky or to the soul.” Bassist Jesse Olsen adds, “‘Skylights’ has always seemed like it was an accurate representation of the feelings surrounding this record. It’s dark, heavy and melodic… it’s been a lot of fun to play live as well. Some songs change a bit when you start playing them live but this one transitioned beautifully to the stage.” The video for the track was directed by Erez Bader (Veil of Maya, The Contortionist), with cinematography from Justin Reich (Black Label Society, The Browning). Olsen says of the clip, “Justin came up with the setup of the shoot. It was actually filmed outside in the middle of a circle of cars with the headlights on. Erez later added effects that made it more of an abstract video… it seemed to work visually and symbolically with‘Skylights’.” Stellar Circuits’ Ways We Haunt album is available for pre-order digitally here and in physical/merch formats here. Today marks the release of Tasha‘s debut album Alone at Last. Subscribers of Spotify and Apple Music can stream it below. Tasha describes Alone At Last as a celebration of “the radical political act of being exquisitely gentle with yourself.” There’s a serene, placid quality to her guitar work, which was inspired by artists like Nai Palm and Lianne La Havas. Previously, she’s shared soul-warming singles “Kind Of Love” and “New Place”. An associate and tourmate of Chicago’s Jamila Woods, Tasha works to pair her music with a commitment to political change, having lent her time to the racial justice group Black Youth Project 100. “I’m only able to handle the world because I can write these songs,” she said in a press release. “So I’d like to think that I help other people deal with the world for the same reason.” “These songs are bed songs,” she said. “Songs about the place that one might go when they finally need to be away from whatever it is that might be causing them stress or anxiety or sadness or fear.” Alone At Last Artwork: Alone At Last Tracklist: 01. While his mug continues making millions at the box office with Halloween, William Shatner has opted out of the spooky holiday by giving everyone an early holiday gift with his star-studded, Shatner Claus – The Christmas Album. So, for those of you looking for some holiday cheer at a time of doom and gloom, unwrap the album below. The collection spans 13 classics that find the Star Trek legend singing alongside heavies like Henry Rollins, who joins in on the opening track, “Jingle Bells”; Iggy Pop, who appears on “Silent Night”; ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, who guests on “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”; and Todd Rundgren, who steps up to the tree with Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Artimus Pyle on “Winter Wonderland”. Believe it or not, but this little Christmas miracle already marks Shatner’s third release for Cleopatra Records, following 2011’s David Bowie covers album, Seeking Major Tom, and 2013’s prog-rock concept LP, Ponder the Mystery. Earlier this year, Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus joined forces to form the ultimate singer-songwriter supergroup, boygenius. Their self-titled debut EP was originally due out November 9th, but has arrived digitally two weeks early through Matador Records. Stream it in full below via Apple Music or Spotify. The idea for establishing an actual band together came to mind after the trio mapped out a joint tour. “A long time ago, before I even met Phoebe, Julien mentioned that she had a pipe dream of starting a band with both of us,” Dacus explained in a press statement. “Then we booked this tour and decided the time was right.” (Read: The 25 Most Anticipated Albums of Fall 2018) “It seemed obvious to record a 7-inch for tour, although many adult men will try to take credit for the idea,” added Bridgers, “when we got together, we had way more songs than we expected and worked so well together, that we decided to make a full EP.” Baker elaborated further on the natural chemistry the three shared: “When we met, Lucy and Phoebe and I were in similar places in our lives and our musical endeavors, but also had similar attitudes toward music that engendered an immediate affinity. Lucy and Phoebe are incredibly gifted performers, and I am a fan of their art outside of being their friends, but they are also both very wise, discerning and kind people whom I look up to in character as much as in talent.” (Read: September 2017 Artist of the Month: Phoebe Bridgers) The resulting six-track boygenius EP was recorded in just one day in early June at the famed Sound City studios in Los Angeles. Each songwriter was tasked with bringing to the table one completed song and one idea for brainstorming. Altogether, the six-track effort reflects a bit of each artist and their respective past works (Baker’s excellent Turn Out the Bright Lights, Bridgers’ Stranger in the Alps, and Dacus’ Historian). The EP was teased over the summer with three songs, including perhaps one of the best of the year, “Me & My Dog”. boygenius are scheduled to perform that track when they make their late-night debut on Late Night with Seth Meyers on November 5th. Physical copies of boygenius will be available beginning November 9th. An exclusive tour-only vinyl version will be on sale on the group’s North American tour, which officially starts November 4th in Nashville; find the full list of dates here. boygenius Artwork: boygenius Tracklist: 01. While Chevelle have found massive success on rock radio over their two-decade career, the Chicago rockers also have a wealth of songs that have never enjoyed the spotlight — until now. The trio has just released the compilation 12 Bloody Spies: B-Sides and Rarities, which brings together tracks from 2002 through 2016. The collection features lesser-known Chevelle songs, including some stripped-down, acoustic numbers, which show the softer side of this typically hard rock band. Chevelle frontman Pete Loeffler recently checked in with Heavy Consequence to discuss 12 Bloody Spies, the status of Chevelle’s next studio album, the upcoming 20th anniversary of the band’s debut disc, and even Kanye West’s recent trip to the White House. Read the full interview below: On the idea of putting together 12 Bloody Spies: B-Sides and Rarities It was actually my brother, Sam, who was talking to me about it one day about a year ago. He said, “It would be great to give some of these songs another shot at daylight.” I think if you’re a die-hard fan, you probably have most of them, but if you’re a casual rock fan of our band, then you are definitely going to discover something new. We thought it was a good way to put them all together and get them out there, and it turned into a full album. Time passes, and you don’t realize that, “Wow. I’ve written all of these songs.” On the process the band went through to pick the specific songs for the collection First, we had to track them all down! (Laughs) I don’t know many musicians who go back and listen to their stuff when they’ve finished tracking an album, because you’re so tired of it after hearing it over and over. I didn’t even have these songs in my iTunes, which is funny! So, we tracked down the songs, tried to make a sequence out of them and put them all together in this collection. There was a lot of trial and error involved. On whether he feels any of the songs on 12 Bloody Spies could have been singles Definitely. I think there are a few. The first song, “A Miracle,” could have been a single, but it’s kind of a long song. That song is such a departure for us, because we play a lot of heavy music and started out really heavy, and it’s a softer song. But, I think that song could have done well at radio. I also think “Glimpse of the Con” could have been a radio song. They actually just released “Sleep Walking Elite” to rock radio because of this release, and that’s a very pretty song. On his favorite songs on 12 Bloody Spies I don’t know if I have a favorite, but I have songs that I’m drawn to and proud of “In Debt to the Earth.” The song was done under a high-pressure situation. We got a call from our management at the time, and they said we needed three more tracks for bonus stuff material on the album we just made. We had to go into our basement and fly an engineer in and bang out songs that, ideally, had to be new material. We had just finished a full-length album and had to go write more songs! (Laughs) That song came out really well. It’s about the environment and some of those situations that we’re dealing with now. On going acoustic on songs such as “Sleep Apnea.” I play in my garage a lot because of the sound — I like the echo and the sound that echoes all around me. I play a lot of acoustic material in there, and I’ve been writing a lot in the garage. I think you’re going to hear more of that. It’s stripped-down, but not traditional acoustic. I can’t say until the new album is done, but maybe it’s time we start thinking about an acoustic record. I have all of these acoustic songs, and they don’t work as heavy rock songs in the style that we go for now in Chevelle. “Sleep Apnea” is actually a demo that I did in my basement. That song was done in one day — just me alone in my basement experimenting with different sounds and shakers. I just sat there and wrote this demo, and it turned out pretty well, and we ended up using as a B-side. On the progress of Chevelle’s next studio album I’ve been working on it all year. We played nine shows this year and are playing a tenth this Saturday in Houston. That’s the last show of the year we have booked, so we are full-on writing for the new record. I’ve been writing since January. It’s one of those times when I’m happy to be done with shows for the year so I can fully focus. It’s difficult for me to jump between the two. You have the live aspect, which is fun and the best part of what we get to do, but to juggle writing new material with performing shows is difficult for me. I’m happy to devote the rest of the year to writing, and hopefully the new album will be out in 2019. I have nine demos that I could play right now. I’ll tell you this one thing — I’m super excited about this one song, and it’s all about this guy who is preparing to fly to Mars. That whole concept of us being an interplanetary species and working towards that is so fascinating to me. How can you wrap your head around leaving the Earth and not having a way to come back? I’ve written a song that’s all about that, and I love it, and it’s going to be a blast to play live. On his reaction to fellow Chicagoan Kanye West’s recent visit to the White House I saw about three minutes of it, and that’s all I could really take. I didn’t understand what was happening and got annoyed so I turned it off, but I thought it was hilarious how Donald Trump sat there. I wonder what he was thinking, because I’m not a fan of Trump or anything he’s been doing lately, and I think he is so starved for attention constantly that if anybody says they like him, who is famous, he wants to embrace them. For me, it was entertaining for three minutes, but that was it. On 2019 marking the 20th anniversary of Chevelle’s debut album, Point #1 It is completely hard to believe. I can’t even tell you how we’re still here. It’s been so long, and music is something that’s ingrained in me. I started writing music at 16 years old. I just turned 42. When we played Jimmy Fallon’s show a few years back, they called us a veteran rock band, and I was like, “What?!” It kind of bummed me out, but at the same time, I’m just happy to be here and still making new music. I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t create new music every year, so I’m lucky. [Point #1] was done twice with [producer] Steve Albini. We didn’t love the first version, so he got wind of that and said he’d come back in and redo it. We did seven tracks over again. We didn’t know what we were doing. All we had done to that point were demos. We had played live shows, but not a lot of them, so it was a huge learning curve. It was such a different experience from what we thought it would be. He does things completely different than most producers, so it was all live. He set us up to play the songs live. It wasn’t the experience we expected. I don’t even know if you can find that record anymore! (Laughs) It was a weird time. Our thanks to Pete Loeffler for taking the time to speak with us. Chevelle’s new release, 12 Bloody Spies: B-Sides and Rarities, is available now at this location. Source
