Snails and Boogie T aren’t exactly a pairing we expected. Despite both of them being firmly placed within the “bass music” genre, their styles are admittedly different. That being said, their new collaboration “Redline” is a feverous combination. The track starts off with an almost reggae vibe that is only accentuated by Boogie’s own vocals. It almost sounds like classic Flux Pavilion, á la “Excuse Me.” But the song is suddenly thrust into the modern day when the drop hits, which almost sounds like Snails’ characteristic vomitstep sound, just smoothed out, without the LFO. Whatever that bass synth is in the drop also doubles as particularly eerie, as it sounds like a monster wailing in the night – perfect for dropping a week before Halloween. And what would a Boogie T collaboration be without some choice guitar licks in the breakdown? Check out their new collaboration “Redline” below, out now via Snails’ own Slugz Music imprint. The Lowdown: Future and Juice WRLD are rappers with very different styles. Juice’s emo rap rhythm and Future’s flexible verses come together on their collaborative mixtape, Future & Juice WRLD Present… WRLD ON DRUGS. There are times when a particular chemistry between the duo can be heard, especially when these partners in crime hit harmonies together, but WRLD ON DRUGS ultimately results in a disappointing fantasy project as both artists struggle to find the perfect flow together. The Good: Future and Juice WRLD will have listeners craving more collabs when they hear them complement each other harmoniously on tracks, playing tag with their ad-libs. On “Shorty”, “Hard Work Pays Off”, and “WRLD on Drugs”, both artists shine as they hit the best flow with their verses. Wheezy’s production also contributes to the admirable qualities on the album. With his wavy beats, the producer truly takes the helm on songs like “7 AM Freestyle”, “Fine China”, and “Make It Back”. The changes in pitch on “7 AM Freestyle” control the flow of both artists as they dance to the rhythm of his beat with their lyrics. When they’re not lyrically swimming in a pool of drugs, both Future and Juice brag about the good things life has brought to them. “Realer N Realer” is an example of one of the more entertaining braggadocious tracks on the mixtape. Juice spits, “Gucci and Louis shoes everywhere, I don’t got no closet space/ Versace drawers, my underwear cost what you make in a week.” Meanwhile, Hendrix raps about the delight women, jewelry, and designer clothes bring to him in this classic back-and-forth of one-upmanship. The Bad: Although the fragments of chemistry they have together can be heard in a few songs, the disconnection in other songs can’t be ignored. Everything about “Red Bentley” (which features Young Thug) will make eyes roll because they’re all lost in different worlds. This is like listening to three artists rant over a beat. On a mixtape that features superstars and trending artists like Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Gunna, and Young Thug, one would expect these guests to contribute to the standout tracks, but instead, they get lost in the project’s more forgettable songs. The Verdict: When Juice WRLD is in control, both rappers shine together. With his first note on songs like “Fine China”, “Shorty”, “Make It Back”, and ”Realer N Realer”, the rhythmic direction can be predicted. However, on Future’s part, when he isn’t outright struggling, he creates a whirlwind of lifeless tracks (especially his solo songs). This contributes to the heap of monotonous songs on the project. Despite the disappointing features, disconnected lyrical exchanges, and multiple fillers, a handful of songs on WRLD ON DRUGS prove that the duo can present a better effort together. Essential Tracks: “Realer N Realer”, “WRLD on Drugs”, and “Fine China” Source

George Lewis Jr., aka Twin Shadow, released his fourth studio album, Caer, this past spring. The record served as the follow-up to 2015’s Eclipse and featured collaborations with HAIM and Rainsford. Now, less than six months later, Lewis has returned with an all-new, one-off song. Dubbed “Hollow Days”, it’s a vibrant, sensuous song in which Lewis digs into his Dominican roots by channeling elements of Bachata music as well as country music themes. “Growing up in a house with a Dominican mother the house was filled with the sounds of Latin music, specifically Bachata and Merengue,” Lewis explained in a press statement. “It is a genre of music I’ve wanted to explore since my parents moved back to Santo Domingo 8 years ago.” “Their return to my birthplace has given me an opportunity to feel more connected to the island by visiting between recording in Los Angeles,” he continued. “In blending what I’ve been doing with songwriting as Twin Shadow and the rhythms of these genres I hope to intensify the bond I have with a place I hope to one day again call home.” Below, take a listen to “Hollow Days”, which was co-produced by Wynne Bennett (Janelle Monáe). Lewis recently performed at this year’s Austin City Limits festival and contributed to alt-J’s latest remix album. Source

Psychedelic indie singer-songwriter Steve Gunn has announced his fourth solo album, The Unseen In Between. The follow-up to his 2016 Matador debut, Eyes on the Lines, is due out January 18th. Produced by frequent collaborator James Elkington and engineered by Daniel Schlett, The Unseen In Between features contributions from Tony Garnier, musical director for Bob Dylan, throughout. The effort had its emotional genesis just two weeks after Eyes on the Lines was released, when Gunn’s father lost his battle to cancer. Tracks on the album pay tribute to Gunn’s dad (“Stonehurst Cowboy”), examine the relationship between bodega owner and bodega cat (“Luciano”), and question what art means when it doesn’t work (“Lightning Field”). As a first taste, Gunn has shared the lyric video for the record’s lead single, “New Moon”. Take a listen below. Pre-orders for The Unseen In Between are now live. Illumination Entertainment has given Dr. Seuss’ classic Christmas tale a CG upgrade with its forthcoming adaptation of The Grinch. While the story gets a flashy modernization thanks to animation technology and the endearing voice of Benedict Cumberbatch, the theme song has also been updated courtesy of Tyler, the Creator and iconic composer Danny Elfman. As we pointed out when news of Tyler’s involvement was first revealed in the film’s trailer, we’re not really sure a slinking rap track is the best foil for an animated children’s movie, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad song. Tyler and Elfman have actually put together a completely serviceable version, complete with kid’s choir, the crack of a slay whip, and Tyler’s own verse from the Grinch’s perspective: “All those smiles, homie, I turn ’em frowns/ All them decorations, I tear ’em down/ You can ask Max, I don’t play around.” Listen to the full version below via its lyric video. The Grinch hits theaters on November 9th, with the soundtrack out the same day. The OST features another Elfman and Tyler collaboration, an original called “I Am the Grinch”, as well as two tracks from Elfman’s score for the film, “A Wonderful Awful Idea” and “Stealing Christmas”. Other inclusions include The Brian Setzer Orchestra’s “Jingle Bells” and “Run Rudolph Run”, Run-DMC’s “Chirstmas Is” and “Chirstmas In Hollis”, and Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song (Merry Chirstmas to You”). The Grinch Official Soundtrack Tracklist: 01. You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch – Tyler, The Creator 02. I Am The Grinch – Tyler, The Creator 03. Christmas Is – Run-DMC 04. Deck The Halls – Jackie Wilson 05. Run Rudolph Run – The Brian Setzer Orchestra 06. Favorite Things – The Supremes 07. Zat You Santa Claus? – Buster Poindexter and His Banshees of Blue 08. Christmas In Hollis – Run-DMC 09. Jingle Bells – The Brian Setzer Orchestra 10. The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas To You) – Nat King Cole 11. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen – Pentatonix 12. A Wonderful Awful Idea – Danny Elfman 13. It’s been a whirlwind year and a half for Michigan rock act Greta Van Fleet, having burst onto the scene in spring 2017 with the single “Highway Tune” and having just released their debut album, Anthem of the Peaceful Army, last week. The young band — consisting of three brothers, Josh (vocals), Jake (guitar) and Sam Kiszka (bass), and one childhood friend, Danny Wagner (drums) — has rocketed to fame, being hailed as rock ‘n’ roll saviors by some, and being called Led Zeppelin knockoffs by others. It’s been a lot to take in for Greta Van Fleet, but the youthful rockers are diving in headfirst with positive energy. With the band currently on the road and getting ready for a massive world trek in 2019, Sam Kiszka checked in with us to talk about the band’s new album, dealing with sudden fame, the polarizing reaction from music fans, and carrying the torch for rock ‘n’ roll. Read our interview with the bassist below: On Greta Van Fleet’s quick rise to fame There is a lot that is associated with the growth of a band, and I don’t wish it upon anybody. I think taking a long time to grow is one of the best opportunities given to anybody, and we really had to learn fast, and we’re still learning fast, because every day we’re doing something new. So, I suppose it’s very, very difficult, but it’s also very fun to be able to do everything on a relatively large scale. And to experience this so fast, but there’s definitely little time to do anything, and there’s also not really a lot of room for error. It’s our creative initiative to be the best that we can, so, yeah, it’s been an absolutely crazy experience. On the positive energy of Anthem of the Peaceful Army, when a lot of modern hard rock is rooted in anger Yeah, a lot of bands are oriented to anger and hate, but we’ve never really been angry people. We’ve never really been attracted to that kind of music. It’s OK to be mad in certain ways, but when you’re just mad all the time, that gets nothing done, that accomplishes nothing. I think being positive about certain topics and issues is hyper important, especially when you’re talking about what we’re talking about. I think the best way to go about that is collectively. I don’t think there’s really any anger on the album. I don’t think it really gets to that. It’s a different way to approach [heavy music]. We think this is the best way to do it, for us, at least. On the grand album-opening track, “Age of Man” It kind of started off just as a guitar bit. “Age of Man” took its time to live and come to life. And we sat in the studio a few nights, trying to work through it, bringing different elements to it, but eventually we kind of isolated ourselves on top of a mountain in the Chattanooga mountain range in Tennessee. And we just sat there all night, and we worked the entire thing out, and it came to life, and we made a demo of it and everything, and it turned out to be very, very large and very special. I think that putting it up top and leading the album with it was a curveball for a lot of people. I think when they hear the name Greta Van Fleet, they kind of think they know what they’re about to get, and it makes a statement right off the top that this is not some silly rock record. It makes a listener sit down, and kind of says, “You’re gonna listen to me, and you’re gonna listen to me loud.” When I hear that track, I want to hear more. It’s a very lyrically heavy. It’s about a lot of things, of them, the generational change, and how we interact with different generations. Once you get into the lyrics, it’s a game changer. On the album’s first single, “When the Curtain Falls” I think that “When the Curtain Falls” was a really, really great segue from [the 2017 EP] From the Fires into Anthem of the Peaceful Army. It was a familiar sound but it was bringing it in a different direction. And also, lyrically, it’s very different than anything Josh had ever done. I think it definitely has more than one interpretation. On the track “Mountain of the Sun” That one is just a very fun song. It has a different vibe, but it has continuity with the album. There’s a little bit of Rolling Stones in there. And there’s a little bit of classic African music in there, like Miriam Makeba, which Josh listens a lot to, and that’s kind of in there. And it kind of moves. It kind of reminded me of playing Motown stuff back in the day. And it’s very much a jam, and I think you can hear that. For the whole album, basically, we wanted to bring the live stage into the studio, and I think you can really hear it in “Mountain of the Sun”. On the acoustic album closer, “Anthem” I think “Anthem” is very, very special. It kind of goes back to “Age of Man”. Of course, “Age of Man” opens the record, and then “Anthem” does the job of closing it. And once again, it is not at all what people would expect from Greta Van Fleet. I really like that factor about it. This one had a certain beauty about it that we really wanted to hold it back a bit. It was kind of based on an old demo that we did, and we came across it, and I said that we had to make a song out of it. We all sat in the Royal Oak recording studio. It was an acoustic guitar, a lap steel, and a bass — and Josh was kind of writing the vocal part. And there was definitely something that took over the air that was very special. We decided we had to put that on the record, and it kind of took over a certain portion of the project. I think that it really sums up what the whole record is about, what the whole record is saying. It kind of paraphrases it all. On the polarizing comments which range from being hailed as rock saviors to being called Led Zeppelin knockoffs The answer is we don’t read any of that. I think that sort of thing is very caging. I don’t think it affects us positively when we get into all of that. I think that we should be relatively unaffected by what other people say, and so far it has gone so. And in the studio, we sat there, we made the record. I don’t think we ever considered, ‘Well, will the people like this?” I think at this point we’re very clean of that, and hopefully we stay that way. But we get so much support from the people, and it’s great. It really gives us the opportunity to get up and go, and really have the inspiration to do this. On the music that influenced the band members Well, I think the songwriting-based stuff is what really what got us excited. Even though I’m not sure that we knew it that early on, but that’s really what we loved. We listened all the time. Me and Jake would sit in the basement and listen to Bob Dylan for literally five hours, some of the most inspiring stuff that you can ever listen to. But I think that the opportunity to listen to music like that came from our parents’ record collection. And that’s really the fundamentals of what we do is old blues like Lead Belly or Son House and Robert Johnson and Lightnin’ Hopkins. So, it’s that kind of stuff that really inspired us. It was that magical sound that really brought us in, and tempted us for more and more. We listened to everything from Jim Croce to Neil Young. We had our time with pretty much every single rock ‘n’ roll band, old and contemporary. It all kind of worked into the inspiration. We listened to Santana, The Doors, The Kinks, The Animals, even Aretha Franklin, a lot of the Motown stuff. That’s where it all comes from. Like I was talking about earlier, Miriam Makeba, ‘70s African pop. On their recently announced 2019 world tour I think the whole stage show is going to change up a bit. It’s always gonna be us four playing, but we’re gonna bring in more elements, just like we did for the album. We’re gonna stretch the bounds of what Greta Van Fleet can do. And I think we’ve always been a live band. That’s always been our niche, performing live. That’s what we do, that’s what we grew up doing. So, I’m very excited for the next level of production. The support that we have gotten up until this point is incredible. The fact that people are coming out and enjoying the music as much as we are. On whether they feel responsible to carry the torch for rock ‘n’ roll This is what we do, it’s not like we’re going to be doing anything different, but with that being said, it’s also very cool to be spearheads of this movement. Right now, it’s a great time for music. We look around, and a lot of our contemporaries are really, really stepping it up. I think that we’re moving into a musical renaissance, so it’s so cool to be a part of it. I suppose there is a bit of an underlying pressure, but we have our bandmates, and we have our confidence with each other, and I think that support system makes it quite easy to go along with it and be creative. With Josh, Jake and Daniel and me altogether, I don’t think there’s anything that really scares us when we have each other. On the contemporary music he’s digging and the current music scene CLOVES really comes to mind. She just released a new record. And holy shit, it’s this whole reawakening. I think when I heard that record, I was blown away. To know that it’s something that is right now, I just became very, very excited. There’s a lot of things going on right now that really point a finger at a renaissance, like I said earlier. I think there’s a giant growth in creativity and I think that it’s gotten to that point where there’s something that needs to be said about a lot of things, and I think a lot of people are doing that — whether it be a self-identity crisis, or whether it be politics or whether it be environmental conservation, I think there’s a lot of things we need to talk about. And I think it’s the artist’s job to do so, and that’s important. I think it’s gotten to that point where the artists are no longer going to be contained in one spot. It’s kind of sprawling out now, and that makes me very, very excited. Our thanks to Sam Kiszka for taking the time to speak with us. Greta Van Fleet’s Anthem of the Peaceful Army album can be ordered here, while their tour dates are listed here. Source

Royal Trux returned last year with Platinum Tips + Ice Cream, the ’90s-era trailblazers’ first new album in nearly two decades. It didn’t feature new music, but rather “live and unrehearsed” versions of past songs meant to evoke the band’s live energy. Now, after a few years spent touring the country, Royal Trux have shared two brand new songs via Fat Possum. The first, “Every Day Swan”, is a sludgy, cowbell-backed slice of spooky Southern rock. “Get Used To This”, meanwhile, truly flaunts the band’s genre-defying style by roping in Kool Keith, who rhymes alongside the dirty vocals of Jennifer Herrema as an electric guitar wails in the background. Both were recorded “on the industrial fringes of Los Angeles” this past summer. Hear them below. “Nothing has changed within the Truxian universe we created for ourselves as teenagers; because Trux is and will always be our way of life whether living it together or separate,” Herrema says in a statement. “This is no hobby rock kick. We are long game lifers with no fear, no regrets and plenty of gratitude for the way the universe has rewarded our singular dynamic.” She adds, “This next chapter is just another perfectly aligned bit of kismet. No concerted effort to force anything forward or to create something with an eye on the past. Only an awareness that the present had come calling with a gift to assist the future future of Royal Trux. The true believers that were once strangers found their way into our universe because everybody was ready for it and it simply, as if on cosmic cue, came to be.” Royal Trux will also be hitting the road early next year for a handful of North American dates. Check them out below, and pick up your tickets starting October 26th. Florence and the Machine may have wrapped up their North American tour, but they’re far from done promoting their most recent album on this side of the Atlantic. They filmed an intimate session for NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series last week, and on Tuesday evening, they served as musical guest on the Late Late Show with James Corden. Dim lights behind her, Florence Welch dramatically stood front and center as she belted the High as Hope single “Patricia”, her own personal tribute to Patti Smith. “And do you understand with every seed you sow, you make this cold world beautiful?” Welch sang with fervor, as though the music icon was actually in attendance somewhere in the shadows. “You told me all the doors are open to the believer/ I believe her, I believe her, I believer her.” Elsewhere in the episode, Welch sat down for a brief chat with Corden and fellow guest Jamie Dornan. She and the actor reminisced about the time they hung out in the Guilty Pleasures Tent at Latitude Festival in the UK (Welch may or may not have been dressed as a lion). Replay all the clips below. In advance of their co-headlining tour this winter, Calgary’s Preoccupations and Detroit’s Protomartyr have announced a 7-inch single in which the bands covering each other’s work. The 7-inch officially drops on November 16th via Domino, but you can hear Protomartyr’s take on Preoccupations’ “Forbidden” below. “There’s an old adage that goes something like, ‘if you’re going to cover a song by a beloved Canadian band, it’s best to pick the second shortest one,'” Protomartyr vocalist Joe Casey said in a press release. “So, ‘Forbidden’ it is. We all really liked the outro part and had the brilliant idea to extend it. And that, my friends, is how you make musical history.” Preoccupations (fka Viet Cong) released its solid New Material earlier this year, and this summer Protomartyr doubled down on last year’s Relatives in Descent with a new EP, Consolation. Kanye West has a love-hate relationship with the Grammys. On one hand, he’s one of the most decorated musicians of his time, having received 68 nominations, 21 of which he’s won (and proudly stores in his sock drawer). On the other hand, he has boycotted the awards ceremony in recent years, claiming a lack of respect for his more recent work (both My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Yeezus were clear Album of the Year candidates, and yet neither received a nomination). And yet, with nominations for the 2019 Grammys set to be released in December, Kanye and his team are actively campaigning for his inclusion in several categories, as TMZ reports. Interestingly enough, that includes nominations for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance. Per TMZ, Kanye has submitted “Freeee (Ghost Town, Pt. 2)”, from his Kid Cudi collaborative album Kids See Ghosts, in both categories. As Kanye sees it, “Freeee” is essentially a rock song thanks to its heavy drums and guitars. A few thoughts here… The Grammys’ rock-centric categories have been a mess for a while, and there’s really no rhyme or reason to who gets nominated. Last year’s winner for Best Rock Performance was the late Canadian crooner Leonard Cohen, and the year prior, Beyoncé received a nomination for “Don’t Hurt Yourself”. The Rock Song category has been even more of a clusterfuck; last year’s crop of nominees included two metal bands (Metallica and Avenged Sevenfold) and hip-hop artist k.flay. So, it wouldn’t be the craziest thing for Kanye to pick up a nomination in either category. And given the breadth of worthy hip-hop contenders in 2019, he might stand a better chance in the rock categories. Cardi B, Travis Scott, Nicki Minaj, Drake, Pusha-T, Beyoncé and JAY-Z, ASAP Rocky, Janelle Monáe , Post Malone, J. Cole, and Kendrick Lamar are just some of the formidable names vying for rap/hip-hop Grammys, and there isn’t one name on that list who I would be comfortable picking Kanye over. TMZ also reports that Kanye has submitted for Producer of the Year — which is probably a lock. Say what you will about his own output this year, but he did crank out five albums in five weeks, including Pusha-T’s DAYTONA, which deserves consideration for Hip-Hop Album of the Year. So, at the very least, he’ll walk away with his 22nd Grammy when the gala goes down on February 10th. An Aussie comedian has absolutely nailed his take on Sydney stereotypes from all walks of life including a not too subtle dig at your typical Kings Cross character…. if you visited the area before lockouts! You might recognise Australian comedian Neel Kolhatkar from the past few years with some comedy gold including ‘westie c*nt’, an uptown funk parody and ‘Bogan Aussie Anaconda’ parody as well as his very original and definitely not ripped off Australia in 2 minutes series. While this one goes for 3 minutes mixing it up from his previous 2 minute endeavours, it gives a good little focus on nightlife pre and post lockouts in a crude yet comical way as well as taking digs at the state government, public transport and even housing prices. Check out the full video below to see him lay into Sydney’s stereotypes and skip to 1:08 for his demolition of our nightlife and tell us if you think he nailed it! Source

Sparrows is the indie dance artist from Sydney that you’ve been hearing around after her track Over and Out got picked up by Triple J and smashed on high rotation. Well it’s just been given a lush remix full of future beats from the Californian bass artist Delamare and we can tell you, it’s a bit of a banger. It starts with an almost tropical feel, chopping Sparrows’ vocal but not over-editing it, keeping the original essence. The tune then moves onto being a bit more cosmic. Giving you those bassy feels without being a future bass track. Delamare does well to create something a little more club ready out of a track that’s close to the definition of an indie dance cut. Not only does he change it up, but he does so while paying true homage to Sparrows’ unique voice and sound. Check it out below and tell us what you think! Source

Last month, Austin Vesely’s long-gestating slasher starring Chance the Rapper as a werewolf hit theaters for one night only. It was subsequently available on Amazon, but for a price. Now, Amazon Prime subscribers can stream it for free. It’s a fairly underwhelming flick, but perfect if you’re looking for something bloody to get stoned to. We called it “a silly, irreverent sleepover slasher” in our C+ review, but criticized its sloppy internal logic and uninspired performances (Chance, it shouldn’t surprise you, is better off rapping). Still, it’s worth watching, if only for Hannibal Buress’ one scene, Y’Lan Noel’s inspired turn, and a fake “commercial” tacked on to the end that produces bigger laughs than anything that came before it. Zazie Beetz, Paul Scheer, and Chris Parnell co-star in the movie, which centers around a series of murders in a small town populated by ghosts, werewolves, and humans. As Chance gears up for the release of his collaborative album with Kanye West, he’s been throwing his considerable influence behind Chicago mayoral candidate Amara Enyia. Revisit the trailer below. Those first few parties when you get to University are insane, a bunch of sweaty, drunk 18-20-year-olds who have no idea how to act while intoxicated and everyone’s clamoring to play the best banger on the aux. There are a few songs that can stir a crowd into an instant party, but apparently playing Faneto by Chief Keef is enough to send a crowd into full on riot mode and wreck a building in the process. Now if that song doesn’t make you want to break into your own house and rob your family, I’m not sure what will. Student’s at Clemson apparently thought the same, which is why you can see them going absolutely fucking off in the video below. Around 30 people were injured from the incident and luckily no one was hurt, on student said “You could hear the floor about to go through, kind of, but nobody thought it was going to happen. They just kept going.” Apparently, the kids fell through to what is actually the apartment complex’s pool room, so it was literally a miracle that no one was downstairs enjoying themselves or they would have seen 500 kids fall on top of them. One bloke said he tried to drag his friends to the balcony before they fell, “They weren’t hurt at all but other people were crying, bleeding, it was just a shocking moment for everyone,” he said. “They then evacuated everyone and ambulances and a helicopter came for all of the injured individuals.” Clemson University will most definitely be looking into the incident and I’d bet my bottom dollar that those who were responsible are absolutely shaking right now. [Warning: The following contains descriptions of domestic violence, assault, and rape.] XXXTentacion (née Jahseh Onfroy) led a troubled life before his death this past June, having been previously charged with crimes that included the aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, domestic battery, false imprisonment, and witness tampering. There’s been plenty of debate over the rapper’s legacy lately, with Vic Mensa calling out XXX’s violent behavior in a cypher at the BET Hip-Hop Awards, where the latter was posthumously named Best New Hip-Hop Artist. Now, Pitchfork has uncovered a secret recording in which XXX confesses to numerous crimes, including domestic abuse. While discussing an ex-girlfriend who he believed had cheated on him, XXX says, “I put my source of happiness in another person, which was a mistake initially, right? But she fell through on every occasion until now. Until I started fucking her up bruh. I started fucking her up because she made one mistake. And from there, the whole cycle went down. Now she’s scared. That girl is scared for her life. Which I understand.” He also said at one point: “I will kill that bitch if she play with me.” Pitchfork has provided an excerpt of the audio, which you can hear below. In the same excerpt, XXX references a Miami New Times article regarding the stabbing of three people in Deerfield Beach, Florida. “They said three, it was eight,” XXX said, confessing to the attacks. Elsewhere in the tape, XXX’s acquaintances try to talk him through his suicidal impulses. He also references the abusive behavior he witnessed when he was younger, crediting it for spawning his own violent tendencies. “You ever seen somebody get their tongue cut out? … You ever seen somebody get raped? … You ever seen somebody try to kill your mom in front of you?” he says on the tape. “Every night you go to sleep and you remember what you seen and you remember how it felt and you remember that horrible feeling in your soul. Nobody can comfort you. It’s something I gotta deal with.” Pitchfork obtained the recording from the Miami-Dade County state attorney’s office, saying that, “according to the office, both the prosecution and XXXTentacion’s defense considered the tape a confession.” Four men were indicted this summer in the murder of the rapper. Soon after his death, his mother revealed he was about to become a father. Source

Whether you’re new to the scene, or a dance music veteran, the draw towards identifying your place in the industry may come along at some point, and I encourage you to follow that temptation. Dipping your toes into the electronic dance music industry means discovering your talent and expanding on it through networking, creating, and executing. There are so many facets of this industry that call for talented individuals to help it prosper. The number of inspiring individuals dance music has introduced me to is mind-blowing, as shown by the other worldly events like festivals that they create. After opening my eyes to all the opportunities this industry has to offer, I wanted to start with one of the most fun ones, fashion. I sat down with the owner of Sea Dragon Studio, who festively goes by Jesseca Diskobaal to talk about all things holographic, and to understand the lifestyle that festival fashion has to offer its curators. Spoiler alert: it is INCREDIBLE. How did your rave wear company start? The idea for Sea Dragon Studio blossomed after a couple of trips to Shambhala Music Festival in British Columbia, Canada. Jesseca’s roots in fashion came from her mom being a makeup artist, and her dad @jess.seeto rockin’ Sea Dragon.being a hair dresser for film, and with her background in jewelry, she knew her creativity was bursting at the seams. After a year working full time AND making sure Sea Dragon was up and running, Jesseca courageously quit her full-time job to immerse herself in festival fashion as a career, and hasn’t looked back since. When did you know your company was taking off? “One of Sea Dragon’s most defining moments was when we were featured in a New York Times article on fashion at Burning Man. One of my friends saw the article and sent it to me. That’s when I knew Sea Dragon had made an impact.” This goes to show that when you put your heart and soul into something, others notice. Jesseca started her Sea Dragon team after attending a marketing seminar, and actually ended up hiring the keynote speaker at that event to do all of Sea Dragon’s marketing. Jesseca was not afraid to propel herself into knowledge about starting her own business in the festival fashion industry, and taking these leaps got her to where she’s at now. Jesseca at one of her Sea Dragon Studio booths. How has your company positively impacted your lifestyle? “I am constantly traveling the world to visit the shops that carry my merchandise, which are located all over, from the United States to Australia. Finding my niche has allowed me an exciting lifestyle full of traveling and festival-going. We recently set up at the London Edge trade show in Las Vegas, and it was amazing being around and being apart of all the alternative fashion there.” Her passport has more stamps than a post office, and her creations are being worn all over the globe. Sea Dragon’s commitment to comfort and functionality are notable, because everyone wants to look cute, but no one wants to be uncomfortable at a 3-day festival. What made you want to start a rave wear company? “One of the reasons I actually started making my own costumes is because I often found that my festival outfits, fab as they looked were actually super uncomfortable. I finally had enough when I bought these amazing sequin shorts but had to take them off after an hour of dancing because they were cutting my legs to shreds every-time I made a move. I created Sea Dragon to not only look fabulous, but also feel fabulous. We trial every new design before it hits the rack to make sure it’s comfortable & functional for all your festival needs. We add pockets and zippers wherever we can and our Sea Dragon Skin fabric literally feels like a second skin, it’s magical. We want you to look as good as you feel, and we know you’re going to feel amazing!” @ginimisselbrook in Sea Dragon hot pants.Let’s get a behind the scenes look at your business. What tools and apps do you use to run your store? How is shipping and order fulfillment handled? “I’m a bit of a technology nerd so I love trying out whatever now apps, hacks and gizmos cross my path. We make most items to order, so prepare, pack and double check every order by hand in our workshop each morning. My favourite tool at the moment is my smart watch, it’s such a huge help for getting organised, setting reminders & returning messages quickly.” @ellekessler smilin’ in the holographic bodysuitWhat are your recommendations for new store owners? “I think it’s so important to be passionate about what you do. Passion shines though and it’s what will set you apart from the others. If you’re excited, other poeple will be excited too. Also, these things take time, you have to love what you’re doing and you have to be ready to grind for it.” EDM is more than just music. The industry has so much to offer when it comes to finding where you fit in. I encourage you to create. To use your talents, and put yourself out there, and to give back to a scene that’s given so much to you. You’d be surprised at what you may discover. New connections, friends, and family come out of the woodworks when you share your skills in a way that will not only benefit others, but yourself. Let others like Jesseca inspire you, use your passion for dance music to fuel your imagination and become the best that you can be.
