NYC based duo, VAVO are making serious waves within the electronic and pop scene. The group has established themselves as act to watch out for, particularly after having accumulated the support from the likes of noticeable tastemakers including, Tiësto, The Chainsmokers, and R3hab. Their most recent single on Kess Records, “Right Now,” is a party-themed smash which defines what the production group is all about — electronic music with a solid drive of pop. Already premiering and gaining the support from renowned electronic music radio station, BPM. Including a catchy, singalong chorus, “Right Now” is a serious jam to bump with energetic hooks and the melodic topline of Carline Kole. It looks like a posthumous album from Avicii is on the horizon… According to close friend and collaborator Aloe Blacc, there are “several” unreleased Avicii songs that have yet to be unleashed. The Daily Star newspaper quoted the “Wake Me Up” singer in saying, “There are several songs left. I believe the record label is working with his parents and the estate to find a way to bring these unreleased songs to the public.” Nile Rogers also recently revealed that he and Avicii had recorded “at least” 10 songs together. None of which have seen the light of day. Some of these recordings may actually be crossovers with both artists, but it sounds like there’s enough material for a full album. Black also remarked on the legend’s passing and a bittersweet silver lining. “Avicii’s death has been a call to a lot of young folks for people to take better care of themselves and surround themselves with people who are looking out for their best interests.” Source: IOL This article was first published on Your EDM. Richard Linklater’s favorite subjects tend to exist within the Texas state lines, whether they be spaced-out high schoolers, pseudo-philosophers, or convicted murderers. The same is true of the figure at the center of his next project, a film based on the life of late comedian Bill Hicks. Collider reports that Linklater has signed on to write and direct the movie for Focus Features. Hicks came up in the Texas comedy scene, and Linklater was apparently a fan, his brother having gone to the same school as the comedian. Collider points to a YouTube clip of Linklater discussing Hicks, saying, “There’s not quite any others like him. They don’t speak in the same voice. You’d think people would take that torch and go with it, but it’s a rare combination of that kind of intelligence, mysticism, political, you know… his politics, his angle, it’s pretty unique.” He added, “I go through my life all the time… everything that’s going on in our culture, I always think, what would Bill Hicks be doing? You just miss him.” (Read: A Beginner’s Guide to Richard Linklater) Hicks died of pancreatic cancer in 1994 at the age of 32. In 2010, a documentary about the comedian, American: The Bill Hicks Story, was released. Linklater’s next movie is an adaptation of Maria Semple’s novel Where’d You Go, Bernadette, which stars Cate Blanchett and Kristen Wiig and will open on March 22nd. He’s also developing a film with Robert Downey, Jr. about Dr. John Brinkley, the con man who claimed to cure male impotence with goat testicles. See Hicks do his thing below: Source

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, the Amy Sherman-Palladino comedy that’s emerged as Amazon Prime’s leading original series, cleaned up at the Emmys this year, taking home Best Comedy Series in addition to statues for stars Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein. We got a teaser for its second season earlier this year, and now Amazon has released both a full trailer and a premiere date. Midge takes the stage on Wednesday, December 5th, and the series describes its sophomore outing thusly: “After Midge’s triumph at the Gaslight, the fallout from her takedown of Sophie Lennon looms large, making her climb up the comedy ladder more challenging than ever. As the actual grind of being a comic begins to take its toll on Midge, the pressure to come clean to her family weighs on her — especially as her choices have a ripple effect on everyone around her.” See the trailer below. A third season has already been ordered by Amazon. Source

Although he’s still readying The Irishman for its 2019 release on Netflix, Martin Scorsese has already set into motion his follow-up: an adaptation of David Grann’s true-crime thriller, Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI. Even better, it’ll reunite the Oscar-winning director with his Oscar-winning muse Leonardo DiCaprio. Set in 1920s Oklahoma, the story revolves around the gristly murders of Osage Nation, a group of people who became the richest folks in the world overnight when oil was found under their land. As the bodies began piling up, the FBI got involved, uncovering one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history. Yeah, should be fun. “When I read David Grann’s book, I immediately started seeing it — the people, the settings, the action — and I knew that I had to make it into a movie,” Scorsese says. “I’m so excited to be working with Eric Roth and reuniting with Leo DiCaprio to bring this truly unsettling American story to the screen.” The two stars have been circling the project for two years, around the time Imperative Entertainment snatched up the rights. Although DiCaprio’s still working on Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, Scorsese’s longtime production designer Dante Ferretti tells Variety that the filmmaker hopes to start shooting sometime next Spring. The film marks DiCaprio and Scorsese’s sixth feature film together. Source

It’s been three years since Ellie Goulding released her last full-length record, 2015’s Delirium. Since then, she’s appeared on the Bridget Jones’s Baby soundtrack, teamed with Kygo on his Stargazing EP, covered Don McLean’s classic “Vincent”, and even gotten married. Yet in all that time, she’s yet to release a true standalone single of her own — until today. The British singer has re-teamed with producer Diplo (with whom she worked on “Powerful” from Major Lazer’s Peace Is The Mission) and Rae Sremmurd’s Swae Lee for a song called “Close to Me”. Befitting her continued transition from a folk-tronica leaning sound to dance and electropop, “Closer to Me” is an earworm of a track. It sways over synths that breathe with the echo of a church as Goulding sings, “I don’t wanna be somebody without your body close to me/ And if it wasn’t you, I wouldn’t want anybody close to me/ ‘Cause I’m an animal like you.” Take a listen below. Last November, Yoko Ono announced she would be producing a new biopic centered around her and John Lennon’s famed relationship. Now, according to Deadline, the project has found its director in Jean-Marc Vallée. A 55-year-old native of Montreal, Vallée is known for his work on the Oscar-winning Dallas Buyers Club and both acclaimed HBO series Big Little Lies and Sharp Objects. He was originally on the shortlist to helm Bond 25, following Danny Boyle’s departure, but has since shifted his focus to this forthcoming Beatles-related film. As previously noted, Ono will produce the project for Universal alongside Michael De Luca, whose credits include Oscar-nominated blockbusters Captain Phillips and The Social Network, as well as a pair of Fifty Shades of Grey films. To pen the script, Anthony McCarten has been brought on-board; 2014’s heralded The Theory of Everything and the forthcoming Bohemian Rhapsody are among some of his most notable works. (Read: The Best TV of 2018… So Far) Ono and the legendary Beatle first crossed paths at a London art gallery in November 1966. Even after marrying in 1969 in Gibraltar, the couple continued to bond over their appreciation for the arts world and activism. Prior to Lennon’s passing in December 1980, the two collaborated on a bunch of records, such as that year’s Double Fantasy LP and a string of releases under their Plastic Ono Band banner (including famed 1969 single “Give Peace A Chance”). In honor of Lennon’s 78th birthday, a six-disc Imagine box set featuring rare outtakes and demos was released earlier this month. Ono also paid tribute to her late husband with her own cover of “Imagine”. Revisit that rendition below. Source

Origins is a new music feature that tasks an artist with digging into the influences behind their latest single. Absolutely Not is laughing and screaming at the same time, with the Chicago-based post-punk outfit regularly interlacing a kaleidoscopic strain of humor into loud, furious riffs plucked from the hottest pits of hell. They scorched the earth with last year’s Errors, and now the glammy punks are back with a brand new single, “Medicine Man”, which you should add to your Halloween playlist right this minute. Originally released on cassette for a limited time, the song tells the story of, in singer Donnie Moore’s words, “two drug-addicted goth kids.” “Hey crazy witch don’t bleed on my lawn,” they shriek on the abrasive, catchy-as-all-hell cut. “Hey crazy witch don’t bleed, he’s in love with ya!” This is trick-or-treating on mescaline music, the kind you can’t help but cackle along to. “It’s still a part of our live set, and has always been a fan favorite, so we felt it deserved to be re-recorded and available digitally,” Moore tells Consequence of Sound. He calls it “just a silly glam punk song,” though we’d say that’s underselling it. Decide for yourself below. For more on “Medicine Man”, Moore has broken down the song’s Origins. XTC – “Cross Wires”: I love how catchy and playful this song is even though it’s incredibly spazzy and a bit confrontational. I have a similar mindset with most of my songwriting: aggressive pop. This band, especially their first three records, had a huge impact on me when I was a teenager. They weren’t just new wave or punk or pop-rock, they were were all three wrapped up with a little ribbon and a card attached that said thank you for being a friend. Tim Burton and Danny Elfman: These two created some real magic visually and aurally between the late ’80s and late ’90s. All of those films (Batman, Beetlejuice, etc) and soundtracks have stood the test of time in my opinion, and still influence me to this day. It’s a universe I’d definitely live in if I was able. Anxiety: I’ve battled anxiety on and off most of my life, it’s a constant roller coaster. Sometimes it makes me introverted, and turn to things like dark rooms and copious amounts of weed, other times it forces me to be extroverted in fear that being alone in the dark all day will further my worries and insanity. Even though I can very easily say that I despise my anxiety, I do think it has made me stronger and more in touch with my emotions. Expression is key in this business and life in general, so honestly if I was “normal” all day everyday, I don’t know if my music would be what it was and has grown into throughout the years. The Fall Season: The leaves change and naturally decorate the city with beautiful hues of orange and brown, Halloween happens, the weather changes… seriously what’s not to like?! I wait for fall the entire year. People are usually in better moods, it’s not deathly hot, or freezing cold, it just is. It’s also a great time of the year to do productive things, especially with music. Did I also mention my birthday is in October? That helps. The CURRENT Republican Party: What can I say that hasn’t been said a million times already. They seem to revel in racism, homophobia, enabling rapists, and making life seem more like a Nazi boot camp than a pleasant environment to be creative, raise a family, or just be comfortable living happily. I’m a gay man and a good majority of friends are POC or LGBTQIA, so maybe this current political climate affects me more than just your average white person with money, but I have to think it’s affecting EVERYONE in some way at this point. I’m doing my best to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and channel my anger and frustration into writing music and creating events that are safe spaces for like-minded people, but goddamn it is hard some days. SPREAD LOVE NOT HATE, IT’S REALLY NOT THAT DIFFICULT. Absolutely Not have a few shows on the calendar, including a slot opening for Mucca Pazza in Chicago on New Year’s Eve. Check out the dates below, where you can catch Meat Wave‘s Chris Sutter, who recently joined their live band. Absolutely Not 2018 Tour Dates: 11/08 – Madison, WI @ High Noon Saloon * 12/31 – Chicago, IL – Lincoln Hall # * = w/ Wood Chickens # = w/ Mucca Pazza Source

Don’t scam The Black Madonna or her fans. She will hunt you down and publicly shame you. Word got around to the iconic DJ/producer that a certain Facebook profile was ripping off people left and right, selling fake tickets to her show. Most artists would send out a message saying that’s “not cool” or “look out for this scammer,” but The Black Madonna took matters into her own hands. CashApp user $AndreaGalterio was requesting $25 per ticket to the show. “Acting up lately… Please send $25 three times,” the user said. “Thanks. Do you understand?” This person didn’t know who they were messing with. Although this is a serious situation, it’s almost comical how The Black Madonna threw it back in the scammer’s face. Her response is 100% amazing and admirable. “Cool. So my name is Marea. And you might know me as The Black Madonna. This Facebook profile had been ripping off people selling fake tickets to my show all weekend. I put everyone you scammed on the list. So, get this: I’m reporting this info to CashApp and the police for fraud right now. You should be embarrassed for stealing from people…” “Find a new show to rip off. Do you understand?” Not only is The Black Madonna one of the baddest in the game — she’s just an all-around badass. This should go without saying, but if you rip people off for a quick buck, you suck. Check out the screenshots of her encounter with the scammer below. The Black Madonna Shames Ticket Scammer Pro-tip: Don’t scam my fans. If you sell fake tickets to my show I will personally find you, come for you and call the police. You may think I’m the one but I’m not the one. See you all at Lot613 today. If you got scammed, please let me know so I can personally make it right. pic.twitter.com/XQavCJDTmS — THE BLACK MADONNA (@blackmadonnachi) October 21, 2018 Photo: Aldo Paredes This article was first published on Your EDM. Vroom vroom, baby. It’s the 50th anniversary of Bullitt this month, and we can’t help but feel a little premium about the whole thing. What better way to celebrate decades of delicious vehicular madness than with a list of the 50 most moving, mashed-up car chases the movies have to offer? We went up and down, left to right, and u-turn to axels with this. We have black-and-white chases, chase with multiple cars, motorcycle chases, even a car-versus-foot chase here and there. No horse cop chases, though…spacing, time, gas money, you know how it is. Don’t like the list? Well then, hop in your car, hit the gas, and come complain about it. Yeah, that’s right, you got a problem, then ram your car into CoS’ offices at (at this point, the editor has decided to take to wheel and course correct straight to the list). –Blake Goble Senior Writer __________________________________________________________ Source

While his fans digest his recently released live album, master guitarist Marty Friedman has added another little morsel to their plates with the announcement of a U.S. tour in early 2019. The “One Bad M.F. Live In The U.S.A. Tour” will kick off on January 23rd at San Diego’s Brick By Brick and will wrap up a month later on the other side of the country with a show at Baltimore’s Ottobar on February 24th. The announcement proclaims that this run of dates will aim to “bring his new life album to life across the country” and will feature a backing band of fellow virtuosic players including bassist Kiyoshi, guitarist Jordan Ziff and the drummer known simply as Chargeeee. “My band outshines me every night,” Friedman said in a statement accompanying this announcement. “You will fall in love with Kiyoshi`s stage persona and her playing. I have never seen or heard a bassist like her. Jordan follows in a well-documented tradition of mine, of only playing with super guitarists. Chargeeee will have you laughing as he seems to be straight off The Muppets, while effortlessly bashing through some quite complex drumming. This tour will bring upon an avalanche of emotion and aggression, tears of joy, and an unhealthy dose of positive vibes from Tokyo!” VIP Packages for this U.S. tour will go on sale on Friday October 26th through his website, with fans getting the chance for a meet-and-greet with Friedman, a guitar pick pack, a VIP lanyard, and a chance to purchase CDs from his Marty’s Vault series. You can also grab tickets here. Friedman’s live album ONE BAD M.F. Live!!! was released on October 19th via Prosthetic Records, and can be ordered here. The record captures a performance by the onetime Megadeth guitarist and his band from earlier this year at the last stop of his “Wall of Sound” tour at Centro Cultural in Mexico City. Origins is a recurring new music feature in which we task an artist with revealing the inspirations behind their latest track. Ross Lynch was a Disney TV star who raised plenty of eyebrows when he appeared as budding serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in last year’s disquieting My Friend Dahmer. Lynch is currently delivering the scares as a cast member on Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina, which premieres this Friday, October 26th. But behind the scenes of all these acting endeavors, he’s been pursuing another passion: music. He and his brother, Rocky, previously made bombastic pop tunes as R5, but now the duo have branched off into a streamlined outfit called The Driver Era. As they gear up for their first proper release, the pair’s made waves with introductory singles “Preacher Man” and “Afterglow”, two songs that simmer with romanticism and plenty of genre-defying flourishes. The same goes for their latest single, “Low”, which Consequence of Sound premieres today. Groovy strums, smoky synths, and an urgent beat merge with atmospheric vocal effects that give Rocky’s sultry delivery a depth that suits the song’s tenderness. “Low” is also notable for being a pet project for Rocky, who produced and wrote the track on his own in addition to serving as singer, a role typically reserved for Ross. Hear the track below. For more insight into “Low”, Rocky has shared the song’s Origins, which include a voice memo, a drum machine from 1972, and the elasticity of the human mind. Voice Memo: https://consequenceofsound.files.wordpress.com/2018/10/low.m4a This is a voice memo I recorded in my car when the main part of the hook came to me. Inspiration hits you at moments when you least expect it to. I was probably in traffic on the 405 heading back to the valley to put down this idea in the studio. The underrated loneliness of Hollywood: This city is an amazing place and has everything that someone in their 20s could ask for. But a little too much partying played its roll in this song. It’s easy to get caught up in it when it’s open bar and free drugs most places you go. Hollywood will get to you after awhile if you’re not careful. 1972 Korg Mini Pops Junior Drum Machine: I bought this in a pawn shop that was deep in the valley around two to three years ago and it sat on a shelf collecting dust for a while. I never found a place for it in a track until “Low”. It has percussion loops that sound like elevator music. The tempo knob is broken on it so it plays every loop at pretty high speeds. So I recorded it at around 165bpm then flexed the audio down to be 135bpm. Psychology: I’ve alway been fascinated by the brain and how emotional it actually is. I started this song when I was in a low place but finished it when I was no longer in that mindset. So the track has a bit of a bipolar feel to it which occurred naturally from the different states of mind that I was in while working on it. Source

If you watched Swedish House Mafia’s reunion performance at Ultra Miami via live stream, then you probably remember the select camera angle that was chosen. If not, you can still watch an unofficial upload of the set here. While most fans were overjoyed that Swedish House Mafia was performing at all, some others were beyond disappointed with the vantage point. With the shot being so far back and stagnant, it was admittedly difficult to see all the on-stage happenings. Disgruntled viewers expressed their concerns on social media. The biggest night in EDM history and we're stuck with 1 fucking camera angle of it #ULTRA20 #SwedishHouseMafia — Stephen Williams (@Stevonator77) March 26, 2018 Man… 5 years later and @swedishousemfia still has the pull to get ONE camera angle #ultra20 — M O R T E N (@MORTENofficial) March 26, 2018 Now, we know there was a reason behind it all. During SHM’s recent press conference, Axwell revealed that they were well aware that the camera angle came across as disappointing. He said that was intentional — to “save something for later.” Interesting. As the trio ramps up for their expected world tour, we’re hanging on the edge of our seats. What have they been hiding up their sleeves? Soon enough, we’ll know. Swedish House Mafia recently announced a Stockholm show. It’s been some time since our initial interview with our pal Cut Rugs. Little did we know it was because he’s been laser focused while working on a brand new EP. Titled New, Cut Rugs is firing on all cylinders with this one. Known for his lurky deep dub sounds, his new project reflects a glitch hop influence, and a bit of Tipper feels, yes Tipper feels… Perfectly aligning with the Halloween season, New packs a mean punch of bass sprinkled with just the right amount of goo. New by Cut Rugs Photo Credit : Judson Hall Photography Here are 3 reasons why we think the EP is a perfect addition for your Halloween playlist. 1. The Undergrowth! Never heard of The Undergrowth? Shame on you, for you have not truly experienced the essence of spooky bass without knowing The Undergrowth crew. The collective of artists based out of Asheville, N.C. are not for the faint of heart. Overall, they know good bass music when they hear it and even better, they’re pros at producing it. While The Undergrowth represent a good variety of genres, many of them are notorious for that creepy deep bass that dub fanatics dream about. Don’t believe us? Check out some of the tracks below to get a feel for how spooky their bass really gets. Murkury – “Heyoka” Makak & Snakko – “The Darkside” Vibe Emissions – “Shadow Figures” 2. Sound Progression Aside from the fact that this EP is without a doubt deep and sinister, New is proof that Cut Rugs has really progressed with his sound scheme. We decided to listen to some Cut Rugs throwbacks to compare. His old school tunes are quality tracks but this EP really showcases his strengths when it comes to producing. Each element is strategically placed to allow the sounds to co-exist among one another. “While making this ep, I realized just how much I love to experiment with sound design. It gives me a chance to hear something never heard before. This ep was a big deal to me… I don’t want to be a super popular producer but I do want to be an innovator. I don’t want to just use serum presets. All my sound design and basses are created from scratch.” We encourage you to listen to the first track Cut Rugs ever released on SoundCloud and then compare it with a new song. Clearly, there is an obvious improvement of technique that really speaks volumes through New. Cut Rugs – “Treble Honey” Cut Rugs – “New” 3. Maynix Maynix is an underground cutting-edge producer that pushes for perfection for all the right reasons. While he’s still solidifying his sound, Maynix and Cut Rugs are a match made in heaven. With this being the only collaboration on the project, “Motivate” is a ground breaking tune. Intricate pieces of heart stopping bass and tortuous buildups are what push the sounds of “Motivate” to the next level. In addition, the ominous vocals add to the eerie feel of the work as a whole. This month marks the 30th anniversary of Sonic Youth’s landmark album, Daydream Nation, which marked the band’s final independent release before signing to a major label. In celebration, the band has launched an expansive archival campaign as well as a new web store with some pretty exciting merch. The archive is housed on the popular live recordings site Nugs and features both audio and video of Sonic Youth’s concerts. The campaign kicks off today with six audio recordings, including two Chicago shows which took place in 1988 and 2002, a Berlin concert from 2009, a performance at Brooklyn’s Williamsburg Waterfront from 2011, and a CBGB’s gig in New York City from 1988. The bands 2007 full-album performance of Daydream Nation at ABC1 in Glasgow, Scotland is also being released in both audio and video formats. (Read: The 20 Worst Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Snubs) “Through the years and as the times changed we recorded our live shows as often as we could, on cassettes, DATs, CD-Rs and later on multi-track recorders,” says Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley. “We collected fan-generated audience tapes, shady bootlegs and anything we could get our hands on. We now maintain an archive of hundreds of hours of Sonic Youth concerts and we’d like to share some of our favorites, often from the best uncirculated source possible via nugs.net.” In addition to the archive, Sonic Youth has opened a Reverb Shop featuring some incredible artifacts from the band’s career. Beginning October 30th, fans will be able to purchase over 200 pieces of gear including guitars, amps, and more, all of which were used by the band on tour and in studio from 1988 through 2011. Also available will be close to 200 screen-printed concert posters, poster-sized photographs, and other memorabilia. For more anniversary goodness, the band is hosting “30 Years of Daydream Nation” events across the country, which feature screenings of three films, including excerpts from a new Lester Bangs-direct concert film of the aforementioned Glasgow concert. Find the schedule of remaining shows below. 30 Years of Daydream Nation Dates: 10/24 – San Francisco, CA @ New Mission Theatre (panel with Lance Bangs, Steve Shelley, Sonic Youth archivist Aaron Mullan, and Brian Turner) 11/11 – Chicago, IL @ Music Box Theater (panel with Thurston Moore, Steve Shelley, and Sonic Youth archivist Aaron Mullan) 11/12 – Austin, TX @ Alamo Drafthouse-Ritz (panel with Lance Bangs and Matador Records’ Gerard Cosloy) 11/18 – Philadelphia, PA @ PhilaMOCA (panel with Lance Bangs and Steve Shelley) 11/19 – Brooklyn, NY @ Alamo Drafthouse (panel with Lee Ranaldo, Steve Shelley, Lance Bangs, and photographer Michael Lavine) Source

Mod Sun has been doing this music thing for roughly half his existence. At 31-years-old, Mod has cultivated a path in music that not many others have before him. The Minnesota rapper has worked tirelessly to get where he’s at right now. What started out as a career that became existent because of an opportunity that occurred at Vans Warped Tour when he was 16, has become a career highlighted by his ability to make art that goes beyond the scope of music, tour with his friends, his current relationship with Bella Thorne, and be the famously charismatic hippy he is. Mod is currently finishing the last leg of his cross-country Smile Machine Tour that started a little over a month ago. During his stop in Indianapolis, I had a chance to sit and catch up with him about his roots, Mac Miller, his new upcoming album, and more. Michael Cottone: Mod! Been a while, how’s the tour been? Mod Sun: It’s been fantastic my man! Sad it’s almost over. MC: You made your stop in your home state of Minnesota last night, can you talk about why it’s important to you to make each time you return to play in your home state special? Mod: Yeah! So it’s always a feeling of having to prove myself when I play in Minnesota. When I was first starting out, there wasn’t a tremendous amount of support from the state itself, ya know? Like I had a group of kids that listened to my shit, but I would go to Denver, Colorado and play shows then come back to Minnesota and play shows with half the amount of people. So everytime I go back I make it a point to prove myself, and I rep Minnesota pretty fucking well I think, it’s always in my bio and I’ll mention it in any interview. So I just wanna prove to the state that I made it big, not just locally but across the country and world. MC: And I know your art goes beyond the scope of your music. You recently released your new poetry book So Long Los Angeles earlier in the year. Can you talk about your inspirations and process for that book particularly? Mod: Yeah, the process of that one was actually different compared to my other books. That was a point where I carried around a typewriter everywhere I went for a year, and I was just randomly typing everything I could find. Eventually I had folders that were just filled with scraps of these poems, and each page in the book is an actual photo copy of the page. What I’ve done with writing and everything is I release projects that are cohesive and get out a feeling I’ve been having. And with SLLA it was a collection of these poems from the past year, which was a really really crazy time for me. Los Angeles in one word for me is temptations, and I’m always tempted. Mod on his tour bus during the interview. Photo by Michael Cottone. 10.22.18MC: Always willing to try new things and have new experiences. Mod: Yeah, and in the duration of writing it I was living on Sunset Blvd in Laurel Canyon, and I ended up moving to Woodland Hills, which is totally in the fucking mountains, away from everything. It was time to clean up, ya know? MC: That environment is essential for that. So over the summer you released a song titled “Runaway” which showcased a versatile, melodic side of you with introspective lyrics. Could you talk about where those lyrics came from? Mod: That song’s really fun. Anyone around me can attest to the fact that I make music everyday, whether it’s with myself or with others or for someone else. Songs just come out of me like vomit man, and Runaway was a perfect example. It’s based off the very first chords I learned on guitar, which come from the band Early November. As a musical expeditioner I can teach myself to play anything related to music. Simplicity to me in music has always been something that I strive for, but it’s not the easiest thing for me, I usually orchestrate big things. Mod Sun and Bella Thorne in Indianapolis. Photo by Michael Cottone 10.22.18But like Runaway, a lot of the stuff I’m going to be releasing has that kind of simplistic approach where I kind of timed myself. So for example when I was making Runaway, Bella was over in New York doing press stuff waking up three hours earlier than me, so I would stay up all night thinking “I wanna send her this when she wakes up,” and I really pushed for it. I wrote the line “one day I’ll be gone and all you’ll have is the words I said,” and I thought that line was special, but I was wondering how I was going to beat that line, but they just come if you let it flow out of you man. And I’ll play it tonight on the piano, and I think it’s the best song on the setlist. It brings people together and I love it. MC: You talk about some of the songs you’re going to release like “Runaway” and “Burning Up,” what can we expect for the next Mod Sun album? Mod: Yes, new Mod Sun album is coming very, very soon. You’re gonna know when it’s coming, but I’m not going to tell you. Something’s gonna happen with me coming up, and you’re going to understand that it’s a part of a bigger picture. It’s gonna feel random but I promise you it’s not, then you’ll know it’s coming. It’s my best work, and some of the best work of any artist right now. I say that because I have been making songs for some of the bigger names in the game lately. I’m a songwriter and a producer now. My name has gotten bigger in the industry because of the work I’ve done for other people. I’m really trying to have longevity for my career and sometimes that means making songs for other people. MC: Speaking of other artists, I remember an instance on Instagram where Trippie Redd hinted at a collaboration with you, is that coming to fruition? Mod: I have songs that I’ve made for him! I haven’t sent any yet, but we have people who want us to get in the studio together. I actually wanted him on “Burning Up.” Caskey: Oh shit, remix! Mod: Cas, he brought up Trippie, ahaha! I’m actually making music for this man Caskey right here, I’m working on MGK’s new album, Bella and Tana’s album. Bella’s will shake the fucking industry. My album is done, but I’m giving myself a chance to write one more for it. Over the course of the past six months, I’ve written probably about 300 songs for Mod Sun, and I’ve known the whole time which 13 songs or so that will be on it, but I wanna try to put a piece of right now into the album, not six months ago. No joking though, my album is going to put me – Caskey: At the top of the music game! Mod: Yes, all around. But you look at people like Mark Ronson or Dr. Dre, people who are known almost more for their work with other people than their own work, ya know? I wanna get plaques man. Whether it’s for my songs or for someone else’s. Mod Sun smiles into the crowd in Indianapolis. Photo by Michael Cottone. 10.22.18MC: You mention MGK, what was your take on his recent incident with Eminem? Mod: So when something like that happens, you’re kind of supposed to take sides, right? And I’ll be honest, Kells did what’s kind quote-on-quote “taboo” in rap. He dissed the God. Everyone knows how people feel about Eminem’s music for the past five years. Like we get it’s Eminem, dope, but recently, we’re not lovin’ it. And why I put Kells as one of my favorite current musicians is he doesn’t look to anyone else but himself to shine. He stands on his own two feet, and has always stuck his neck out for me and for other artists. Bob Dylan – who I’m blessed to be alive at the same time as – is a prime example of that kind of artistry. He made jazz, gospel, and at Newport Jazz Fest, got booed off stage for playing electric guitar and playing Like a Rolling Stone. That’s what I’m talking about, he didn’t look to other people, other artists to cosign, none of that. You just have to be real with yourself, and what happened with Kells and Eminem was corny, and Kells was dope, it’s facts. Honesty is power, and as far as good people go, Kells is an example of good people. I don’t see what he does in music very much. MC: And another thing that happened recently was Mac Miller’s death. You had some ties to him, could you talk about your reaction to that? Mod: Yes, honestly he did a lot for me. He let me open shows for him, he wore my fucking hoodie on his TV show (Mac Miller and The Most Dope Family). We were around each other for small periods of time. I think my hoodie got in his hands through Tree Jay, Mac’s right hand man. Jay was always showing me love. Me and Mac were never super close, but people close to him were close to me though. But, like we never even had each other’s phone numbers, but he was still sticking his neck out for me like that, wearing my hoodie, letting me open up for him. He genuinely fucked with me and what I did. To be honest, me and him did our own things around the same times, both on our own waves, but there was never any competition with him. He was bigger than me and I was in a position where all the other white rappers were trying to get at, and I’ve never heard from anyone about having competition with Mac. MC: He was always someone to bring other artists up. Mod: Yeah, yeah! He embodied that by taking people he wanted to bring up on tour with him. But his death lit a spark between me and my friends to keep in touch with each other more, to work with each other more, and care more. He was a blessing. Mod Sun reflects on Mac Miller’s death. (via @modsun on IG)MC: I agree. Alright, so to move in a lighter direction, I’ve noticed for a long time that you are big on interacting with your fan base online and in person, can you talk about why it’s important to you to do that? Mod: Um, it’s not even like I feel like it’s important, I’m just honestly blessed, I’m literally in awe that people give a fuck, ya know? I believe in myself so much that to have someone compliment me, or to have someone to sit down and ask me questions, it feels like I’m the one being given a blessing. I’m blessed to play in front of people. So like online, I’m not much of an online guy. I don’t like to sit on the internet and just look at shit. I use my computer to make music, but when it comes to interacting with fans, it’s like code of conduct. Like I’m so blessed to have people see what I’m doing, and I know that they want the best for me, and that’s the best part. MC: Beautiful. And before we finish, is there any of that iconic Mod Sun advice or anything you’d like to say to people right now? Mod: Yeah, my biggest advice that I can give to anyone is my feeling of changing the world. It sounds scary and impossible, but what I’ve realized lately is that it’s more important to change the people around you and their world. Anyone of those people in your phone or life that you can reach, those are the people you can help and change their world. To make someone believe that they are someone important and can be a positive piece in this world really goes a long way. The help you can offer to those around you is tremendous. Mod Sun‘s drive to do as much as he can artistically for himself and others around him is a true testament to his genuine character. The music world doesn’t have very many personalities like Mod Sun, and I’m not sure there will be many like him in the future either. Mod Sun prepares to play Runaway during his stop in Indianapolis. On February 8th, Bob Mould is set to return with a new solo album called Sunshine Rock. Due via Merge Records, it’s his 13th solo album to date and first since 2016’s Patch the Sky. The forthcoming effort finds the Hüsker Dü rocker incorporating more hope and light into his work, following a series of LPs that skewed toward the somber and morose. Mould drew much of his inspiration from his new surroundings, an apartment in Berlin which he began to call home. “Almost four years ago, I made plans for an extended break,” Mould explained in a press statement. “I started spending time in Berlin in 2015, found an apartment in 2016, and became a resident in 2017. My time in Berlin has been a life changing experience. The winter days are long and dark, but when the sun comes back, all spirits lift.” He elaborated further on his decision to leave the darkness behind him. “To go from [2011 autobiography] See a Little Light to the last three albums, two of which were informed by loss of each parent, respectively, at some point I had to put a Post-It note on my work station and say, ‘Try to think about good things.’ Otherwise I could really go down a long, dark hole,” said Mould. “I’m trying to keep things brighter these days as a way to stay alive.” Mould also envisioned Sunshine Rock as a means to get back to the days of great rock albums: “I’ve heard this thing about ‘guitars are dead’ at least five times, and they always seem to come back. For better or worse, this is what I do. I think there’s a lot of people trying to aspire to make great albums. That’s really what this is about: trying to make great rock albums for people because there’s not that many anymore.” Sunshine Rock was produced by Mould himself, with recording taking place at Tiny Telephone and Tiny Telephone B in California’s Bay Area. Longtime touring musicians and collaborators Jason Narducy (Split Single, Verboten) and Jon Wurster (Superchunk, the Mountain Goats) contributed throughout on bass and drums, respectively. To tease the album, Mould has shared the title track, which ended up setting the scene for the rest of his songwriting sessions. “‘Sunshine Rock’ was such a bright, optimistic song, and once that came together, I knew that would be the title track, and that really set the tone for the direction of the album,” Mould noted. “It was funny, because writing with that as the opener in mind, it was like, ‘This is not Black Sheets of Rain,'” referring to his melancholy 1990 solo album. As deafening chants of anticipation and eagerness filled the air, the thrash metal heavyweights took the stage. “Metallica is with you City Limits – it’s about time,” Hetfield shouted as screams from the audience greeted him. The band produced resounding performances across the first two weekends of October at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. As the headlining event for both Saturday nights, thousands of eager concertgoers flocked to the American Express Stage to see the band in action. In their usual fashion, an edited version of the classic Clint Eastwood western, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, played on screen as Ennio Morricone’s timeless “Ecstasy of Gold” rang in the background, acting as their setlist intro. This seemingly unrelated component of the band’s performance has been used to kickstart their shows for decades. Both weekends saw the band open with “Hardwired,” an explosive track from their latest full-length album Hardwired…to Self-Destruct. As one might expect, Metallica expertly played through the opening song, leaving many audience members little opportunity to collect themselves in between the fast-paced guitar riffs and thundering double-bass drum beats. Amid vibrant light effects and dense smoke coming off the U-shaped stage, Metallica powered through the rest of the setlist showcasing the stylistic range that differentiates them from other genre contemporaries. Their song “Creeping Death,” a staple within the thrash metal subgenre, came early on both weekend sets, notable for its high-tempo and relentless down-picked riffs. The slow, heavy-hitting “Sad But True” made an appearance toward the end of the band’s set on both Saturdays giving fans a steady beat to head-bang to. Some of their more mainstream material also found its place in the setlist. “Nothing Else Matters” and “Enter Sandman,” two of the band’s most commercially successful songs, gave rise to fervent cheers and roars during their three-song encore. Personal favorites, “One” and “Master of Puppets” spurred large-scale mosh pits throughout the crowd giving rowdy fans an outlet to let loose. A variety of other tracks were played during both weekends, giving fans a taste of material from nearly every era of Metallica. Their performance highlighted the tone and technical ability in their music that place them atop the hierarchy of heavy music. Clean intros and melodic interludes offset the crushing pace of the verses and choruses of many songs, “The Unforgiven” and “Battery” are two prime examples. The ferocity of “Creeping Death” and “Master of Puppets” remind the listener why the subgenre is aptly named “thrash” metal. And the technical masterclass that is “Blackened” ultimately reveals the level at which this band is able to perform live. An overwhelming sense of camaraderie pulsed throughout the sea of onlookers as Metallica tackled each song. Thousands of fans were jumping with fists in the air echoing lyrics from every song. Something entirely expected given the domineering presence the metal virtuosos brought to the stage. It was clear that the heavy wall of distortion blaring out of the amplifiers was a welcome sound to those in the crowd with a taste for heavier music. As the concert closed out, fans chanting “Metallica! Metallica!” Reverberated across the festival grounds as those close to the stage made their way toward the exit with awe strung across their faces.
