  1. There’s no shying away from the fact that SBTRKT is an all time Stoney fave, hell we’ve done a throwback track for the guy before. As a loosely described dubstep track it was released when bro-step was a big part of ‘music’ and it really helped emphasise the importance of genre diversity in an oversaturated scene. The vocal by Little Dragon and harrowing sounds fit pretty well as we come into the spooky season, but more than that they stick with you for a lifetime. SBTRKT is often known for his huge remixes, but for us this original takes the cake. Have a listen below and let it transport you back in time, helping you remember the guy for more than just accusing Disclosure of ripping off his artwork! Source
  2. Marshmello has become one of dance music’s greatest chameleons, teaming up with a wider variety of collaborators than we reasonably recommend. Putting out hits with Migos, Selena Gomez, Lil Peep, Bastille, Anne-Marie, Amr Diab, Logic, Khalid and more has earned him a place as one of the more prolific producers of 2018, and he’s not stopping yet. This past weekend, while many of us were distracted by the Top 100 DJs announcement, Marshmello was announcing his next collaboration with Tyga and Chris Brown. Tyga and Chris Brown have worked together in the past, and both have worked with electronic producers, as well, but this mark the first time that either of them have worked directly with Marshmello. We’ll have more information on the collaboration as it becomes available! 3. It’s not uncommon to experience technical difficulties at shows, and it’s not typically something we’d cover if not for the strange, specific nature of the mishap experienced by KSHMR at this year’s Amsterdam Music Festival. Typically, when using CDJs, a DJ will choose from a library of music on a USB stick via the screen on one of the CDJs, that track will load, and then you can edit, find a cue point, play, filter, whatever you want. For KSHMR, that experience was made all the more difficult as, he describes, “every time I picked a song it started playing a different one.” It’s like that item in a video game that switches your input, a random handicap that you can’t really do anything about but wait for it to finish its effect… except it happened to KSHMR for the whole set. AMF thank you, not sure what happened, every time I picked a song it started playing a different one. Sorry I couldn’t give u the full show — KSHМR (@KSHMRmusic) October 21, 2018 No other DJ experienced the problem, but fellow DJ Mag Top 100 artist Lost Frequencies offered a possible explanation. Hopefully the issue is sorted out and doesn’t cause any issues at further events! I had it once, it was when i updated my usb on another laptop ! Maybe that was the problem ? — Lost Frequencies (@LFrequencies) October 21, 2018 Photo via Rukes.com This article was first published on Your EDM. 4. This past weekend, tens of thousands of people were excited to experience Clubhouse Festival in Maryland with Steve Aoki, Tyga, Sam Feldt, Lost Kings, and more. However, one person was missing from the final event… Deadmau5. Originally billed as a headliner at the festival, deadmau5 quietly pulled out of the event following an announcement of his hiatus to receive “professional help.” October 10th is the last we heard from deadmau5 on social media, as he wrote, “I’ve consulted with friends and loved ones and I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m in need of professional help to get on top of my issues and become a better me.” Club Glow, one of the promoters for the festival, announced deadmau5’s withdrawal from the lineup six days later. “Due to circumstances beyond our control, we have just received word deadmau5 will no longer be performing at Clubhouse Fest,” they write in a statement, “but the show will go on with an amazing lineup of music.” Important update for @ClubhouseFest attached Update for the after party – Due to circumstance beyond our control, Deadmau5 will not be performing as Testpilot this Saturday. Full refunds will be issued at the point of purchase. pic.twitter.com/zllGXGWZC2 — Club Glow (@ClubGlow) October 16, 2018 The festival took place this past Saturday and from all of the social media mentions we can see, it seems that the festival still went off without a hitch, even considering deadmau5’s absence. 5. Nine days ago, it was major news when a rare record by Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter resurfaced. The nearly 15-minute song “Riga (Take 5)” was teased on the Ed Banger Records Instagram page (though it wasn’t an Ed Banger release) with a brief video, but even that was enough to ignite the desires of the most staunch Daft Punk collectors. The song was made as part of the soundtrack for the 2017 French film Riga (Take 1), though both the movie and even moreso the song are incredibly difficult to find. The fate of the record remained a mystery – until yesterday. None other than fellow Frenchman David Guetta posted a video of himself unboxing the rare vinyl. We can only hope that he starts a live stream and plays the record from beginning to end, but until that day comes, we’re still left with just the snippet posted last week. Perhaps someone should start a petition to make it happen? H/T EDM Sauce This article was first published on Your EDM. Source: David Guetta Procures Rare Thomas Bangalter Record Source
  6. Over the weekend, David Gordon Green’s Halloween slaughtered the box office, earning 90 million dollars worldwide from fans and horror hounds that were all too overjoyed to see the return of Michael Myers. In fact, they were so thrilled that they immediately demanded the horror reboot/sequel slash its way into IMAX theaters. Naturally, with the ultra-lucrative Halloween weekend looming up ahead, the company relented: You asked, and we listened. By popular demand, #Halloween is coming to IMAX for one week only. pic.twitter.com/TvaIwWndkd — IMAX (@IMAX) October 23, 2018 It’s only for a week, which makes sense given that Halloween falls on a Wednesday this year, giving IMAX plenty of time to reap the benefits from all those Halloweenies looking for more tricks and treats. 7. The Avicii Netflix documentary True Stories notoriously painted the Swedish producer in a very bright light, exposing many of his harshest difficulties with health and touring. When Avicii died this past April, the documentary was removed from Netflix. Now, it might be coming back. A new post on Instagram from True Stories producer and director Levan Tsikurishvili points to the possibility. The photo posted is the blurred out cover of the documentary, along with the caption, “Watch out!!! #somethingiscomingsoon #ATS.” The hashtag #ATS could very easily mean Avicii: True Stories. So are we going to be seeing this documentary again soon? Will it appear in its original version or will it be edited to include testimonials from after the producers death? Or will it be edited to leave some not-so-savory bits out from the original? We don’t yet have answers to any of these questions, but it seems we’ll be finding out “soon.” This article was first published on Your EDM. 10. Just one year after Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales failed to buoy a franchise on its decline, Disney is planning a reboot to its blockbuster the series. Deadline reports that Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are in “early talks” with Disney, who apparently want the pirates to say “fuck” a lot now. Deadline notes that Jerry Bruckheimer will stay on as producer and that previous cast members could also appear, which really wouldn’t make it a reboot at all. They note that this also includes franchise star Johnny Depp, who was once indispensable as Captain Jack Sparrow but has also seen his star fall in the wake of domestic abuse allegations, stupid comments, and unflattering profiles. Regardless, the five Pirates films are coming back, with or without Depp. That $4.5 billion they raked in over the past 14 years ain’t nothing to sniff at. As for Reese and Wernick, they’re currently at work on a Clue reboot with Deadpool collaborator Ryan Reynolds, and will see their scripts for Zombieland 2 and Michael Bay’s 6 Underground come to life next year. 11. A Perfect Circle have instituted a no-phone policy on their tour to prevent fans from filming and photographing the show, but at the band’s Saturday (October 20th) gig in West Valley, Utah, frontman Maynard James Keenan was in a giving mood. He told fans they can whip their phones out to record the last song, “Delicious”, as “a present from grandpa.” The Utah show kicked off the latest leg of APC’s tour, and the performance of “Delicious” marked the first time the band played the Eat the Elephant track live. In a 2017 interview with the Montreal Gazette, guitarist Billy Howerdel explained, “We have a no-phone policy at our show. First of all, it’s just rude. Putting up a phone in front of someone’s face so they get to watch the show through it? Getting a memento of the show — sure, I’ve done it myself. But then you ask, ‘What am I gonna do with this?’” At one particular A Perfect Circle show in Reading, Pennsylvania, last year, more than 60 people were ejected for filming and taking pictures with their phones. The special moment at the Utah concert over the weekend was obviously captured by a number of fans, as evidenced in the Instagram posts below. A Perfect Circle’s current North American tour runs through a November 20th gig in Phoenix. A full list of dates is listed here, while tickets are available here. Meanwhile, another one of Keenan’s famous bands, Tool, announced dates for a European tour earlier today. No word yet on the phone policy, but since a bunch of the shows are festival gigs, we’re guessing it’s going to be a lot more difficult to enforce the ban at those performances. 12. When it comes time to celebrate your birthday, you want to make sure all your closest friends are around you. If you’re a record label commemorating your 10th anniversary, you bring out the best your roster has to offer and throw yourself one hell of a party. Mom+Pop did just that on Monday night in Brooklyn, welcoming industry friends, fans, and rock lovers to Brooklyn Steel for a six-band shindig worthy of a decade of one of indie music’s finest labels. The evening was heavy on current signees, including Artist of the Month alums Sunflower Bean and recent addition Alice Merton. Neon Indian came out of hiding for what frontman Alan Palomo said was only the group’s second performance of the year. Then came one of Mom+Pop’s biggest success stories, local noise rock slayers Sleigh Bells. The duo (or trio, as they add a guitarist live) tore through hits like “Comeback Kid” and “Crown on the Ground” before welcoming out Tom Morello to shred on “Bitter Rivals”. After a slight break, the Nightwatchman came out to regale the crowd with stories about how Mom+Pop founder Michael Goldstone got Rage Against the Machine signed to Epic and helped them sneak lyrics by Viacom. He played a short two-song set that included new song “Battle Sirens” and a simply show-stopping cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “The Ghost of Tom Joad”. Of course, the show didn’t stop there, continuing on with Mom+Pop’s current claim to fame, Courtney Barnett. The Aussie guitar goddess delivered the longest set of the night, which included throwing back to hits like “Avant Gardener”, focusing on her latest effort (Tell Me How You Really Feel) with “City Looks Pretty” and “Nameless, Faceless”, and hitting highlights with the balloon-drop-assisted closer “Pedestrian at Best”. Though not every band got to dig into their catalog like Barnett did, the quality of all the music presented was a testament to how important Mom+Pop has become to the indie scene in its 10 years. It was the kind of celebration where everyone felt they walked away with the best party favors, a fitting way to mark a decade of great music making. 13. Plenty of rankings have tried to create the most objective list of “best” producers, but no matter where you start, there’s an issue of bias. The DJ Mag Top 100 is heavily influenced by how much money producers put into it for advertising purposes, the Billboard Top 100 is perhaps too objective, taking into account only hard numbers, and entirely fan-run polls like the Reddit Top 100 just don’t have a big enough group of people for any statistical significance. All that being said, EDM Sauce took another crack at the objective route, looking into a variety of criteria, assigning each a point value, and then ranking DJs in that way. In their report, they admitted that they placed certain limitations on each ranking, and also admitted that not every criteria was able to be explored in the most in-depth fashion due to lack of resources. Below are the criteria they evaluated (all data is for the period of January 1, 2018, until October 21, 2018): Total Soundcloud Streams Total Revenue (as provided by the Forbes Top Earning DJs list) Total YouTube Views For Videos Uploaded Total Shows Played Total Unique DJ Spins (based off the 1001tracklists Top 100) Most Googled Artists Total Weeks At #1 On Billboard EDM/Dance Charts (this criterion is the only one not restricted to just 2018, as Zedd was listed for 86 weeks, which is obviously more than the amount of weeks found between January 1 and October 21). A full breakdown of the explanations and limitations can be found in their report here. Below are the top 20 DJs from their report. 20. Kaskade 19. Afrojack 18. Skrillex 17. 14. We initially rolled our eyes at the idea of a Joker origin story, but our first looks at Joaquin Phoenix’s titular clown have been compelling. Also, you can’t overlook this cast: Not only are high-wattage stars like Robert De Niro and Zazie Beetz joining Phoenix, but director Todd Phillips’ has recruited some of Hollywood’s best character actors in Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron, and Shea Whigham. The casting announcements keep rolling in, too, as The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed a few more new faces, the likes of whom will be playing key roles. First up is Dante Pereira-Olso, who will play a young Bruce Wayne in the movie. This marks a reunion between Phoenix and the child actor, who played a younger version of Phoenix’s character in this year’s You Were Never Really Here. Joining him is Douglas Hodge, who will play Alfred Pennyworth, the Wayne family’s loyal butler. Brett Cullen was also recently cast as Thomas Wayne, Bruce’s father, after Alec Baldwin dropped out. The studio previously described the project as an “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.” It will anchor next year’s Halloween filmscape when it hits theaters on October 4th, 2019. 15. There’s nothing really shocking about Ed Sheeran’s chart-topping brand of hot adult contemporary music other than its enormous popularity, but the British crooner is a fan of shock-rocker Marilyn Manson … and of nu-metal pioneers Korn, for that matter. Korn are currently holed up in Nashville, Tennessee, working on their new album, and guitarists Brian “Head” Welch and James “Munky” Shaffer decided to take in Marilyn Manson’s concert last night (October 22nd) in the town affectionately known as Music City. It was backstage at the show where Welch ran into none other than Ed Sheeran, who expressed his love for Korn to the guitarist. Welch posted a picture of himself and Sheeran, captioned, “Of course @teddysphotos [Sheeran’s Instagram handle] would walk right past me and @munky_korn @marilynmanson concert and tell us he just listened to Freak On a Leash earlier today. Why should we be surprised?” Perhaps Sheeran is trying to regain his rock cred after being called out by Dave Grohl at a recent Foo Fighters concert, but he did once cover metal songs on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, so we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt … this time! 16. It doesn’t take more than a cursory knowledge of dance music to know that the statement “David Guetta is the grandfather of electronic dance music” is false. You don’t even have to actually know who those grandfathers are to know it’s false. And yet, major national media continues to report erroneous facts about the history of dance music time and again. This latest faux pas occurred this past weekend as Guetta gave his first online interview about his ‘Jack Back’ alter ego. The internet likely wouldn’t have noticed the misstep this quickly had it not been for ABC Nightline using the sound bite as a central part of their social media push. Because of that, house music aficionados and dance music historians alike mercilessly tore into ABC and its affiliate segment for the lack of fact checking. For the record, dance music’s origins can be traced back to groups like Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Giorgio Moroder, and others in the ’70s and ’80s. The segment further dug their head in the sand by claiming that Guetta helped bring house music to the US… as if it wasn’t already here? House music’s origins can be traced back to Chicago and Detroit warehouses with the likes of Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, Frankie Knuckles, and others. For what it’s worth, Guetta’s influence on dance music culture is monolithic. His contribution to the pop/dance crossover movement in the ’00s is undeniable and he is responsible for putting dance music hits on the radio in the US. If dance music is to spread into popular culture, which it is already doing at an alarming pace, thanks in large part to producers like Guetta, then the general public must be made aware of its history and culture before further misinformation is disseminated. 17. This weekend alt-pop veterans Smallpools released a new single, “Social” in anticipation of a new EP due December 7, 2018, and an upcoming tour. Photo courtesy of SmallpoolsThe single is part of the band’s new approach to release singles and EPs rather than saturate the current industry with a full-length album. Active since 2013, their first and only album LOVETAP! was released in 2015, and the band has been dropping popular singles and EPs ever since. It’s a system that has been working for them and has proven to be a great success as they’ve worked their way into top spots as royalty in the world of alternative pop music. They’ve managed to ride the wave and keep a positive following over the last 5 years and with the sound of their recent releases, it’s clear these guys aren’t going anywhere for a very long time. Check out “Social” above and our exclusive interview with drummer Beau Kuther below: How do you think you guys have changed/evolved/grown from your first EP in 2013 to now? A good amount of time has gone by since we first started this Smallpools adventure. With time comes growth, experience, and knowledge. You live and you learn. We’ve matured as humans and as artists. We’re excited about where were stand at this moment in time and feel no outside pressure to do anything we don’t want to do. Recently you guys put out a number of singles and an EP, now this new track (which I love) and another EP on the way (which is super exciting), but are there any hopes to do another full-length album soon or are you guys in no rush? It is super exciting! We’re in no rush to put out a full length, but that could change at any moment. We were in talks with a company about doing a full length but decided releasing a small batch of music works best for us right now. The musical landscape has changed dramatically in the past 6 or so years. I don’t know if people have the patience for a full album of 10-14 songs right now? It’s a bit sad because I grew up walking to the “record store” after saving my money up to buy a new album from my favorite artist: it was like a ritual to me. (Ohh damn, I sound like my dad haha) Songs and artists burn out so fast these days it seems. I wish that wasn’t the case. We’ll keep doing what we do and hope people want to keep listening. What has drawn you guys to this single/EP approach rather than releasing albums? Like I was saying on the previous answer, this approach of releasing music is working for us nicely. It allows us to put out a small batch of tunes that we feel good about, tour a bit, then come home and do it again. It’s a low-stress situation that allows us to create whatever we are feeling at the moment. If we release something and it resonates well with the people, that’s great, but if not we didn’t waste a year or two worth of hard work to just have a full album fall short of expectations. How would you describe the new singles and upcoming EP? Fresh, complex and fun for the entire family! What’s your creative process been like with this upcoming EP? This EP has a bit of something for everyone; well, that was the goal anyway. We wanted each of the 5 tracks to have a voice of their own. That’s the great thing about a short EP, each song has to stand alone. You can’t add a bunch of filler tracks between a few golden tunes. There’s no filler here… it’s all thriller baby! Can you speak on the new single “Social,” what it means to you guys and what kind of message you want it to express? Boy, I sure do love the track Social! We wrote it a few years back with our friend Frederik Thaae in LA. It’s fast, has a killer guitar riff, and tackles an issue I think we all sort of suffer from these days, FOMO. We’re always feeling the need to be “social” and post about every little thing we do in life. I get it, you had a latte today and lattes are tasty. We all love lattes. I hope actual human interaction doesn’t become obsolete. Photo courtesy of SmallpoolsCan we expect any new tour dates following this EP drop? Oh yeah! I’m stoked to get out there and play these new tunes! We just released the first leg of the “So Social” North American tour today. It’s the east coast portion of the tour. We’ve decided to split up the tour into separate legs. We are trying to be as efficient as possible with our touring these days. We’ll do a midwest leg and then a west coast. Dates for those are TBA. What artists inspire your sound? I’m inspired by a lot of music from the 80’s and 90’s. I’ve been on a huge Foo Fighters kick lately. I just went and saw them with my girlfriend last weekend and I was blown away by the show. I’ve been a Dave Grohl fan my whole life; seeing the energy those guys bring night after night playing for nearly 3 hours is so inspiring! I hope we can rock that hard after 25 years of being a band! Any dream musical collaborations? I think it would be so awesome to work with Roland and Curt from Tears for Fears. Who would you say you make music for? Playing and making music is fulfilling in so many ways. Creating something new and fresh is very personally rewarding. Then when we get to release it to the world it’s even more gratifying! Then we get to see people smiling and singing along to songs we’ve put our hearts into at shows; it is just the best feeling in the world! Dream tour locations? I think we should play a show in Hawaii. We also want to do a proper European tour! If you’re reading this and live in Europe and can bring us across the pond please email greg@thisisnoisemgmt.com . I’m not even kidding! Favorite live show you’ve played, and why? There have been so many great shows over the years. Selling out Irving Plaza in NYC this past spring was pretty incredible. Firefly back in June was also one for the books! I love watching those inflatable killer whales fly through the audience! Anything else you want readers to know? Thank you for the continued support! We’ll keep releasing music if you keep listening. Look out for Smallpools‘ new EP “So Social” out December 7th, and catch them at a venue near you soon! 18. Since leaving The Office in its seventh season, Steve Carell has kept a high profile as one of the great, surprising dramatic actors of his time. In fare like Foxcatcher and Last Flag Flying, he’s allowed the more yearning aspects of Michael Scott and other great comedy turns to bubble to the surface. Now, for the first time since 2010, Carell will return to the small(er) screen. He’s reportedly been tapped to play the male lead in Apple’s yet-to-be-titled drama co-starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. (The lead actresses will also co-executive produce.) The series, which will premiere on Apple’s upcoming streaming service, has already been given a two-season, 20-episode pickup in advance of its premiere. The trio will star as key players in a fictional broadcast TV morning news show, as they attempt to stay afloat in an ever-changing media landscape. For all of the news surrounding Apple’s latest venture that’s started to emerge, there’s still no word about when exactly their buzzy new collection of shows will premiere (or, for that matter, in what form). But this is the latest example of a series that’d be a top-shelf item on any network, and has gone straight to streaming instead. Seems like the perfect time for a story of a broadcast trying to survive the new world. Source
  19. Skillet have been bringing the hard-rocking hits for more than 20 years, but frontman John Cooper is taking the riffs to another level of heavy with his new metal band Fight the Fury. “Growing up, Metallica was a major influence for me,” Cooper told Heavy Consequence. “They’re the best metal band of all time and always will be, in my opinion.” Now, Cooper has a new project fueled by that love for classic metal. Fight the Fury sees Cooper embracing his inner Metallica, with mighty guitar solos, complex musical arrangements and growly vocals. The band’s debut EP, Still Breathing, is out on October 26th via Atlantic Records, and is available for pre-order here. Cooper spoke with Heavy Consequence about the concept behind Fight the Fury, how the band differs from Skillet, his personal faith, and when to expect new Skillet music. Read the full interview with Cooper below. On the significance of the band name Fight the Fury To me, Fight the Fury felt like the right combination of words for this band. I’m not saying it’s overly angsty, but we do have some angst and chaos in the music. When I was writing the lyrics, it felt like they were lending themselves to this battle of life that we’re fighting to survive through, and it felt like the right name. On what makes now the right time to start Fight the Fury I actually had the idea for this band five years ago. I was on the road on a Skillet tour, and I was thinking that I really wanted to start a metal side project, just to be able to cut loose. I write these songs for Skillet, and then, sometimes I write songs that are too heavy and the lyrics are too dark, or the guitar solos are too long. I love what I do for Skillet, but it’s very much about commercial and broad appeal and cutting all the fat off of everything. It’s wonderful, and we all have work because of Skillet, and we’re thankful for that, but sometimes you want to start a song with a guitar solo. So, when I was out with Skillet, I said to Seth, our guitarist, “Hey, if I was going to do this metal band, would you want to be the guitar player?” And he said, “Absolutely.” He’s a shredder, so it was just right. We stared recoding songs two years ago, just having fun and writing. On what brought together Fight the Fury’s band members of Cooper, Skillet guitarist Seth Morrison, drummer Jared Ward and guitarist John Panzer III I knew Seth was a shredder from working with him in Skillet. Then, I needed a second lead guitar player to explore harmony leads and things that I like from my metal influence. I remembered there was a guy who auditioned for Skillet years ago, the same time we brought on Seth, and he was really good but 16 years old at the time! I didn’t want to take on such a young player. That guy, John, and Seth stayed in touch, and he turned into a fantastic guitar player. They can do duel solos and stuff, which I love. Then, Seth said, “Hey, my cousin is a really good drummer,” and it turned out he was a slamming drummer. Finding people who can shred and play well is difficult, especially in such a technical genre. On how Fight the Fury’s songs ire different from Skillet’s songs from a lyrical standpoint I think that’s one of the bigger differences between the projects. Fight the Fury is heavier, and there’s no question about that. That’s more screaming. But I think the lyrical content is part of what makes it heavier. It’s darker. It can be bleak. Our song “My Demons” is about child abuse. I talked to a fan who had endured child and sexual abuse, and I was moved by that. I wanted to write a song about that, and I knew it wasn’t going to be on a commercial Skillet song. It’s a dark subject that a lot of people can relate to. On how Fight the Fury’s songs are different from that of Skillet from a musical standpoint Not that Skillet never done anything that has approached the metal territory, but the stuff that makes Fight the Fury more metal is that it’s very riff-y and technical and showing off the guitar and bass. There are also a few touches of prog-rock, as in Dream Theater and those kinds of bands. The way we switch time signatures and key changes and how its unconventional in the song structure formats also lends it to metal. Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth — those bands are unconventional in their song structures. On how Fight the Fury’s lyrics fit in with Cooper’s Christian faith I’ve had tons of people on social media ask me, is this still Christian? I didn’t expect anybody to ask that, but since Skillet is Christian, that makes sense. I think that for me, Fight the Fury is not a Christian band, but I want to be really clear to say that I’m still a Christian and my faith is very important to me. I’m a follower of Christ, but that’s not the intent with this music. This is a metal band. “My Demons” is an experience — it’s a song about an experience in life, and that was how I felt about it. Everything I write about has something to do with my experience, so some of Fight the Fury’s music is inherently spiritual, because we are spiritual beings, so you may pick up on some spiritual themes, but for the most part, it’s about experiences. On the difference in spirituality in the music of Skillet and Fight the Fury I don’t judge people who aren’t like me, and nobody comes to a Skillet show and goes away thinking that I hate people who are not Christian. But I’ve always been very clear that Skillet is a Christian band. Fight the Fury is for something else. I don’t see myself sharing stories about my faith. It’s about the music and experience. On the meaning behind the song “Still Burning” It’s a little bit of dark romance. A Romeo and Juliet. For me, I think “Still Burning” is the most spiritual song on the record. It has the most emotion to it. It’s a love song, and the dynamic has even a little bit of an emo-metal feel, like Flyleaf or The Used. The bridge goes into a time signature change, and that reminds me of old Metallica. Lyrically, it’s a love song about not losing that fire. It’s saying, “You’re someone I can’t live without, and I still feel that heat.” It can be a great thing, but sometimes, true love can hurt. On “My Demons” being the right choice as the first single from the EP It might be nostalgic, because it’s the first song I wrote for Fight the Fury five years ago. I never thought it would actually come out. There was no way they would let me put that on a Skillet record, because it’s just too heavy. I knew it was too dark. I made it as heavy as it possible, with all the screaming, and it was new for me to create something that would never work for Skillet. There’s a chaos and frenzy to it. On being a big horror memorabilia collector That’s a funny thing about me. I’m always been blatant about being Christian, but I do like horror films and books. I’m not into gore, but I like things that are scary. I love creepy films more than I like thrasher films. I collect great memorabilia, from a life-sized Frankenstein head to toys and statues to a life-sized alien head. Any toys from horror films are always something I love to collect. Some of my absolutely favorite horror films are The Ring, Aliens — any sci-fi horror film I love. On when to expect a new Skillet album It’s been so crazy. As of seven weeks ago, we were supposed to be releasing a brand-new Skillet record in October. And six months before that, we had planned to release the new album this past January. Now, we’re not going to release it until next year. Jen (Ledger, the drummer for Skillet) has a new solo project, Ledger, and we want to give her time to build her brand while keeping Skillet alive. It’s a juggling act. My wife Korey and I worked on Jen’s record, and it’s an awesome record. So, we decided that with Jen’s project and everything else going on, we’re going to wait on the Skillet record, even though we’re about 70% done with it. When we decided to wait, I made the move to release my Fight the Fury EP now. Then, we’ll come hitting hard with Skillet in the summer. Next summer is the plan for the new Skillet album to come out, because the record is almost done. On the musical direction of the new Skillet album It’s probably too early to say, but I will say this: A year ago, we released an extended version of our Unleashed album, and on there, there’s a song called “Breaking Free”, which people said they liked and sounded heavy for Skillet. It’s a song that I produced on my own, because I wanted Skillet to have a little more teeth. I do think the new album is going to be a bit heavier, but we’re going to have those arena anthems and also some duets with Jen and me, which our fans love. I’m excited for it. 20. Roxy Music mastermind Bryan Ferry recently collaborated with Netflix on the German period drama Babylon Berlin, an experience that served as the inspiration for a new solo album called Bitter-Sweet. Due out November 30th, the album will, like 2012’s The Jazz Age, be credited to Bryan Ferry and His Orchestra. The album, which further explores Ferry’s jazz influences, includes reinterpretations of Roxy Music cuts like “While My Heart Is Still Beating” and “Dance Away”. Ferry is also tinkering with some of his own solo songs, such as the title track, which Ferry’s refashioned as a sumptuous, smoky affair buoyed by melancholic horns. Hear it below. Per Exclaim, Princeton University musicologist Simon Morrison wrote liner notes for the album, including the below excerpt: Bitter-Sweet accomplishes what the modernists of the past, in their youthful enthusiasm, could not. Ferry’s music embraces the artifice of art as well as the artlessness of emotion so that the ‘sad affair’ described at the start leads you to “break down and cry” by the end. Thus we are transported to the Berlin of the Tacheles club and the Chamäleon, to the zeitgeist of that jazz-friendly metropolis in the young 20th century — the hedonistic world of Babylon Berlin. Unlike that instrumental affair, however, new record Bitter-Sweet contains vocals, and is prompted by the songwriter’s work on the Sky Atlantic/Netflix series Babylon Berlin. Re-working some Roxy Music and solo classics, it aims to capture the freshness, the sheer modernity of 1920s jazz and the birth of popular culture. Pre-order the album here, and check out its artwork and tracklist below. Also, be sure to listen to Kyle Meredith’s recent interview with Ferry, in which he expresses a desire to record more music with former bandmate Brian Eno. 21. Mod Sun plays at the legendary SOBs in NYC for the first time I’m no stranger to seeing the happiest man on earth, hippy-hop artist Mod Sun while he’s spreading love and positivity city to city on tour, but this one was super special. The Smile Machine Tour was one for the books. For the first time, he performed in NYC’s legendary venue SOBs and I did my second interview with Mod Sun. Prior to his high energy, unifying performance, I sat down with Mod Sun to catch up since our last conversation back in 2015. That November, we spoke about his debut album, Look Up, but a lot has happened since then. Last year, he released his sophomore album, Movie, and that’s where it all changed. I believe that’s where it truly all started. In Mod Sun’s book, Did I Ever Wake Up, he talks about being reborn. Personally, I feel like after Movie was released, he was reborn to his friend base all over again. For realistically the first time, we got to see a different side to the always smiling ear to ear, happy all the time hippy we are all so accustomed to. We got tracks like “Make Somethin’ Of Yourself” and “The End Or Start Again?” These songs were real. They were honest. They were full of heart, emotion and genuine authenticity. Continuing that journey of sharing more raw and real life moments, this year Mod Sun put out my new favorite track, Runaway. I can’t get enough of this song. It’s this pure self aware, self love anthem. A true test of strength and perseverance when maybe giving up would be easier. Not him, not ever. Mod Suns vulnerability opens up this undeniable connection and understanding. It offers another way to relate to those who listen. It opens the possibility to reach a whole new group of people. He’s truly just getting started. Following our conversation, he took that legendary stage and showed the entire crowd why he was destined to be doing exactly what he’s doing. As we all screamed and sang every lyric with him, as we danced, as we had fun, as we all connected, I was again reassured why that’s exactly where I was meant to be in that moment. There’s just this energy Mod Sun radiates. This presence that demands your attention and makes you feel at home. Arguably my favorite part of the entire experience is getting to show him my tattoo and explain why I got it. After our 2015 interview and conversation, I got “modsun” tattooed on my wrist. Hearing from him exactly how Movement On Dreams Stand Under None came about and what it means, stands for and represents, was incredibly inspiring and full of love. It now had an added meaning to me, and I knew then and there the tattoo was happening. Getting to tell Mod Sun that, have another beautiful conversation together and see him perform yet again all validates and reassures what I’ve known all along, he’s a one of a kind soul that makes the world better just by being in it. 22. More than two years ago, Primus bassist Les Claypool and Sean Lennon unleashed their debut album as The Claypool Lennon Delirium. The 2016 record was called Monolith of Phobos, and saw the two-piece produce “a surprisingly successful” collection of material “fueled by psychedelics.” Now, Claypool and Lennon are continuing on with their super duo project and have reconvened for a follow-up record. Titled South of Reality, the sophomore release will hit store shelves February 22nd, 2019 through ATO Records. The experimental outfit wrote and recorded it over the course of about two months, motivated by what Claypool told Rolling Stone was “the desire to sit in a room and make space sounds again.” “Basically it was the same setup in the same place,” he explained of their creative process, “I am a creature of habit and have all my old vintage gear dialed in the way I like it, so I like to helm from the same spot.” As for Lennon, he felt much more at ease during this second go-around in the studio. “We are great friends indeed, and I guess I’m not nervous in quite the same way as I was in the beginning, but I still make sure to do as much preparation as possible,” Lennon remarked. “Ideas always come quick for us, and I think that’s why we like working together. But playing with Les is like knowing you’re gonna be playing tennis with Rafael Nadal – it makes you wanna brush up on a few things before you get on the court.” South of Reality features songs like “Cricket Chronicles Revisited” (a continuation of Monolith cut “The Cricket and the Genie”), the Charles Bukowski-inspired “Easily Charmed By Fools”, and “Blood and Rockets”, the newly unveiled lead single about famed JPL rocket scientist Jack Parsons. Take a listen to the expansive grandeur of “Blood and Rockets” below. South of Reality Artwork: The duo has a handful of California tour dates scheduled for later this year. 23. Yesterday, a countdown timer on Swedish House Mafia’s website ended and revealed the pre-sale info for the group’s first official comeback performance. The event is scheduled to go down at Stockholm’s Tele2 Arena on May 4, 2019. Amidst the excitement, it would be understandable if another countdown timer further down on the page was missed completely… which just so happens to be the case. This new countdown ends 10/27/2018, 6 AM EST. Whereas the previous timer was fairly easy to guess given the Stockholm teasers so prominently shown on the group members’ social media days prior, this one is much more of a mystery. Is it announcing another show? More music? A full tour? The sky’s the limit. Tune in this Saturday to find out what it’s all about! Photo via Rukes.com This article was first published on Your EDM. 24. We may not have seen the last of Rush. Tucked away at the end of a long interview with Rolling Stone about the new 40th anniversary deluxe reissue of the prog-rock trio’s album Hemispheres, bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee says that while “there are zero plans to tour again,” they are still in constant contact and that some iteration of the group could hit the road before too long. “We’re very close and talk all the time, but we don’t talk about work,” Lee said. “We’re friends, and we talk about life as friends. I can’t really tell you more than that, I’m afraid. I would say there’s no chance of seeing Rush on tour again as Alex, Geddy, Neil. But would you see one of us or two of us or three of us? That’s possible.” Rush wrapped up their last tour, a celebration of the band’s 40th anniversary, in 2015 and have been inactive ever since, with guitarist Alex Lifeson telling the Globe and Mail earlier this year, “We’re basically done. After 41 years, we felt it was enough.” In that same piece, Lifeson admits that he’s still been busy, working on a few different musical projects, as well as contributing a column to The West End Phoenix, a monthly paper published in Toronto. The end of Rush was precipitated by Neil Peart’s retirement from playing the drums due to suffering from chronic tendinitis and shoulder issues. The musician announced his decision in an interview with Drumhead magazine in 2015 and was backed up by Lifeson in a Rolling Stone interview from 2016 about the band’s last tour. “[Peart] didn’t even want to do the tour, to be honest with you,” Lifeson said. “It’s been increasingly difficult for him, but he committed to the tour and we got through it. As far as he was concerned, that was the end of touring…his shoulders were hurting, his arms were hurting, his elbows, his feet, everything, He didn’t want to play anything less than 100 percent. He was finding it increasingly difficult to hit that mark on this last tour.” As for Lee, he recently announced the publication of Geddy Lee’s Big Beautiful Book of Bass, a book that features photos of his extensive collection of bass guitars and interviews with fellow players like Adam Clayton of U2, John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, and Metallica’s Robert Trujillo. While he says that tome has demanded much of his attention, he also told Rolling Stone that he’s “always thinking about another music project” and does spend time in his home studio working on ideas for songs as they come to him. “When you’ve spent 42 years working closely with the same people and formed the kind of bond and friendship that the three of us have had — and maintained, to this day — it’s a big decision and a big question what you want to do next,” Lee said. “Or if you want to do something next. These are fundamental, existential questions, and I cannot say that I’ve answered that question satisfactorily enough to move in one direction or another.” Tool’s Top 5 Music Videos Metallica’s Top 5 Songs Behemoth's Top 5 Songs Alice in Chains' Top 5 Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy” Annotated Video Source
  25. This past July, White Fence leader Tim Presley and Ty Segall linked up to release a collaborative album called Joy. Now, taking a page from the prolific Segall, Presley is prepping to soon drop yet another full-length. Titled I Have to Feed Larry’s Hawk, it’s set to hit shelves January 25th via Drag City. The 13-track collection will serve as Presley’s seventh under his White Fence banner and long-awaited follow-up to 2014’s For the Recently Found Innocent. Early songwriting sessions for the LP took place in a small UK town called Staveley, where Presley was staying with past collaborator and fellow DRINKS bandmate Cate Le Bon. “While she was there going to school learning how to build & design furniture out of wood, I started writing on her piano,” Presley shared in a statement. “Staveley is in the Lake District (Northern England) and everywhere you look is the most beautiful serene British landscapes. Your eyes go quiet.” Larry’s Hawk was later completed in San Francisco with the help of Jeremy Harris, who not only recorded and engineered the project, but also contributed piano, keys, and most of the drum arrangements. Local musician Dylan Hadley and H. Hawkline also provided additional percussion and vocals. On the LP, Presley’s process of “painting vulnerability” is one that’s informed by “the extreme polarization of punk rock, finds counter-intuitive poses in the letting down of his hair,” a press release describes, “a clear intimation that any path taken, whether one of transformation or of succumbing, may meet an ambiguous outcome.” As a teaser, Presley has shared “Lorelei”, a dreamy lead single textured with rich instrumentation.
