  1. Swedish House Mafia are back in full force. Now, we know what that massive countdown on their website was all about. The iconic dance trio will play a show together at Stockholm’s Tele2 Arena on May 4, 2019. We could have almost guessed this to be true, considering days ago members of the group teased a Stockholm graphic on social media. They have this hype thing down to a science — with cryptic billboards, eye-catching online visuals, and yeah, that countdown was pretty epic. The most exciting part about Swedish House Mafia’s 2019 reunion and expected world tour is that for the first time in a very long time, they will all be focused solely on the EDM supergroup, including new music. Though the press conference was in Swedish, this fine lad provided a brief summary of what was said. Swedish House Mafia stream: 1. Tour starts in May in Stockholm. 2. New music and sticking to their sound. You’re welcome. pic.twitter.com/N4ULy3PZTS — Sup (@TSSxJason) October 22, 2018 We can’t wait to hear what the new Swedish House Mafia sounds like and what kind of live presentation they will bring. Check out the official announcement here and register for pre-sale tickets to the Stockholm show now. This is a guaranteed sell-out. 2. Fit for a King have always churned out fiery, brutally heavy metalcore, and they still do, but something is musically different on their latest album. Listening to Dark Skies, which dropped last month, it’s obvious that big, sing-along choruses have taken on a new importance to Fit for a King, and vocalist Ryan Kirby agrees. “I think when you hear a catchy chorus, it gets stuck in your head, and I think having a strong chorus in our songs this time has people coming back,” Kirby told Heavy Consequence. Now, Fit for a King will be on the road through the end of the year to promote Dark Skies, and Kirby is having a blast performing these songs to packed theaters. Kirby spoke with Heavy Consequence about the personal meaning behind the songs on Dark Skies, why he thinks politics has become a dividing force in the U.S., the future of metalcore, and what it’s like being a Christian in the world of heavy music. Read the full interview below. On Dark Skies earning Fit for a King their best first-week sales numbers and resonating with fans I believe the choruses are a big reason this album is doing so well — both the song structures and choruses. I think this album contains some of the strongest choruses we’ve ever had. We’ve always been known as a heavy band, and choruses have always been an afterthought. On this album, we spent a lot more time on the choruses, and I think the choruses are just as important as any other aspect of the album. We wanted something catchy. On Dark Skies being about personal struggles Throughout the record, I touch on a bunch of different struggles, some personal some to me and some personal to others. I had social anxiety growing up, so sometimes I write about how that was crippling and shattering. I’ve never personally dealt with depression, but on the song “Shattered Glass”, I’m trying to describe what depression feels like to somebody who doesn’t understand it, because it’s hard for someone who hasn’t gone through it to understand what depression is really like. On what it was like working with producer Drew Fulk (I Prevail, Motionless in White, Memphis May Fire) on the album Drew was incredible. We’re for sure going to go back to him the next time. His mindset is, “I’m going to be a member of the band for the next month, and we’re going to write the best music possible.” He focuses a lot on the overall big picture. In the past, we’ve focused on making every little part cool. He was very focused on the big picture things and overall flow of the record, and that made huge difference, on top of him being a great motivator. He’s so good at motivating us to step out of comfort zone and do things and not feel dumb trying these new things. I think a lot of singing is confidence, and he was really good at building up my confidence. He would tell me, “This will sound great. You can do this.” He’s good at getting in your head in a good way. On the song “Oblivion”, and it being about “a man’s search for forgiveness” I’m really happy with it. It’s a different kind of song. It’s a sad story. The song isn’t a happy song. I think we wanted it to be released first because of the emotion of it. It also has a chorus that I thought a lot of people would enjoy listening to. And it showcases the new direction of us bringing choruses to forefront of songs. On the politically charged song “The Price of Agony” “The Price of Agony” is talking about the political divide in our country right now. Everyone feels it, no matter what side of the spectrum you’re on, and if you’re not on either side of the debate, you look at everyone and go, “What’s wrong with all of you?” Most people, I believe, outside of politics could be friends, if you would just take out the political stuff. I’ve toured with people who completely disagree with me politically, but we’ll let it go. I feel like there’s a huge lack of people willing to have a constructive debate. It’s not just somebody on the left or right disagreeing with each other — they think the other side is evil, and that’s such an unhealthy way to view things. On how the song “Shattered Glass” takes on the topic of depression That’s a song where I tried to paint a picture of depression and how someone with depression feels. I’ve been fortunate to not have to go through depression. I’ve had anxiety and other problems, but never depression, but talking to fans, that’s the first thing brought up to me by fans. So, I wanted to make a track to help people. On his favorite songs off Dark Skies I think “The Price of Agony” is one of my favorites. I love bands like As I Lay Dying and Killswitch Engage, and that song is close to those. I like the song “Tower of Pain”, too. It’s just fast and driving, and we haven’t had a lot of fast, driving songs on our past records, so it’s fun to play live, and I have a blast with it. On guitarist and backing vocalist Bobby Lynge stepping away from touring with Fit for a King Bobby and his wife have a plant shop where they sell indoor and outdoor plants, so they are focused on that now. It had been going on for a while. He actually stopped touring with us in the beginning of this year, and he did do one last tour with us in May. It was just that Bobby had been a shell of himself since having a second child. Being on tour, he missed his family a lot, and it was really hard on him. We didn’t see the same Bobby in the band. We were really supportive of him stepping down from touring, and he still loves music and will still be involved with everything outside of touring, like writing with the band. Outside of touring, it’s business as usual. On balancing being a Christian with the lifestyle of being in a band that plays heavy music It’s a very odd combination. I’m not a big fan of the term Christian band, because there is so much negative connotation tied to the term Christian now, with Westboro Baptist Church and stuff I don’t like being attached with it. But, I am a follower of Christ. I am a Christian. I’ve never been someone who sits down and says, “I’m going to write a song about Jesus,” but sometimes my faith will come through in my lyrics. It does get odd sometimes — not with the other bands we tour with or anything, but we were touring in May and went to play a venue on North Carolina, and there was a church protesting the show outside the venue because “metal is Satan music.” It’s weird to be on tour as a Christian and then have a Christian group protesting you. I always tell people that bad people use religion as a shield to project their bigotry. In reality, they just are hateful towards that group of people. On whether metalcore is at a crossroads, with bands like Bring Me the Horizon going in a new musical direction and the Warped Tour ending I would say so. I would hope our band would be part of the new wave of bands that is shifting. I think that there’s a shift of older bands that are either breaking up or changing sounds or becoming openers again, or there’s the Bring Me the Horizons that just go in a different genre. I’d like to think there’s a new wave of bands that will carry the torch and bring metalcore back to a prominent spot. Bands like Parkway Drive and Killswitch Engage are killing it. Stuff like “The Price of Agony” shifts closer into the mainstream metalcore world, like the Killswitch Engages or As I Lay Dyings. We’ll never put out a record without any heavy tracks, but we want to bring catchier songs to our records. But, we’ll always maintain our heavy songs. On his thoughts on Tim Lambesis reuniting with As I Lay Dying I guess my outlook is that he served his time, and his bandmates found a way to forgive him. I don’t know him at all. I never met him. Those band mates had a tour coming up, and touring and making music was their income and way to live, so he could have cost them so much money and even cost them their jobs. If they learned to forgive him, then I can, too. What I hear from people who do know him is that he has changed a lot and is trying to do good. I would like to think that since nobody, thankfully, ended up dying, that rehabilitation would be everyone’s goal. On his thoughts about We Came As Romans singer Kyle Pavone passing away I never had the pleasure of speaking with him. I’ve met the other guys, and we’ve toured, and I even hung out with them before this Devil Wears Prada tour that we’re on now, and they seem to be doing okay. It’s very powerful to hear how they’re handling it. I think it’s really sad losing someone so young and talented and who was a staple in the music scene for so long. Our thanks to Ryan Kirby for taking the time to chat with us. Pick up Fit for a King’s new album, Dark Skies, digitally at iTunes or physically at MerchNow, and catch the band supporting The Devil Wears Prada on the next leg of their fall tour. 4. From the Los Angeles Lakers to New Jersey’s Crystal Lake, 3×NBA Champion, 3×NBA Finals MVP, 4×NBA Most Valuable Player, and 14×NBA All-Star LeBron James is currently in talks to produce, yes, another reboot of Friday the 13th. According to Bloody Disgusting, James and his own Springhill Entertainment imprint are having conversations with Vertigo Entertainment to bring Jason Voorhees back to life for the first time since 2009’s last Friday reboot by Platinum Dunes. (Ranking: Every Friday the 13th Movie from Worst to Best) It’s a serendipitous move for James and Vertigo, what with Halloween raking in nearly 100 mil worldwide this past weekend and original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller toppling over Horror, Inc. producers in the courts over rights. Don’t laugh, either. James is not only already attached to produce and star in that Space Jam sequel, but he’s also a superfan of the series, who’s been known to don some killer Jason kicks and even his iconic mask. This helps, too: Friday the 13th! Jason Vorhees is one of my favorites. Still don't understand how he caught people running and he just walked though. — LeBron James (@KingJames) August 13, 2010 No wonder he moved to Los Angeles. Source
  5. Fans in Los Angeles will have a chance to ring in the new year with one helluva show, as it’s just been announced that Ozzy Osbourne will headline a one-night Ozzfest New Year’s Eve spectacular at The Forum that will also feature Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson and more acts. The December 31st show will also include an outdoor stage and other holiday themed festivities. Joining the aforementioned acts on the bill will be Korn’s Jonathan Davis and Body Count featuring Ice-T. “I asked Sharon what we’re doing this New Year’s Eve and she said, ‘WE’RE DOING FUCK ALL!” said Ozzy in a statement. “So I thought, ‘We didn’t do Ozzfest in 2018, so let’s do a New Year’s Eve Ozzfest.'” Sharon added, “What better way to celebrate New Year’s Eve than with some of the greatest performers in this genre and our longtime friends Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, Jonathan Davis and Ice T.” Tickets for the show go on sale this Friday (October 26th) at 10 a.m. PT via Ticketmaster, with VIP packages available at Ozzfest.com. You can also grab them here. Meanwhile, Ozzy revealed over the weekend that he had recently suffered a potentially deadly staph infection, which had led him to postpone the last four shows on his fall North American tour until next July. 6. He’s been circling the project for years, but Guillermo del Toro will finally adapt the age-old story, Pinnochio. Fresh off of his Oscar sweep with The Shape of Water, the veteran director has been given the green light by Netflix to bring the puppet to life via stop-motion animation, which will no doubt creep this writer out until the wee hours of night. “No art form has influenced my life and my work more than animation and no single character in history has had as deep of a personal connection to me as Pinocchio,” del Toro said in a statement. “In our story, Pinocchio is an innocent soul with an uncaring father who gets lost in a world he cannot comprehend. He embarks on an extraordinary journey that leaves him with a deep understanding of his father and the real world. I’ve wanted to make this movie for as long as I can remember.” Del Toro co-wrote the screenplay with Patrick McHale, setting the film in 1930’s Italy, right when Benito Mussolini was all the rage and fucked up things royally with Fascism. Del Toro will get an assist behind the lens from Fantastic Mr. Fox’s Mark Gustafson with Corpse Bride masterminds Mackinnon and Saunders building the puppets alongside the Jim Henson Company. Production begins this fall. It’s worth noting that Nick Cave was previously attached to score the film when it was first announced back in 2011. We’ve reached out to representatives of Cave to see if that is still the case. Previously, del Toro collaborated with Netflix on the Emmy-winning Trollhunters, whose next chapter, 3 Below, bows on December, with Wizards to follow in 2019. He also carved out the forthcoming anthology series, Guillermo del Toro Presents 10 After Midnight. And let’s not forget, he’s also attached as a co-writer for next year’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Does this guy ever sleep? Source
  7. When As I Lay Dying announced that they had re-grouped with singer Tim Lambesis earlier this year, it came as a major surprise, resulting in a split between fans who welcomed them back and those who swore they’d never support the band again. Now, that divide has resulted in the metalcore outfit being booted off the 2019 Resurrection Fest lineup. Lambesis infamously went to prison after pleading guilty to attempting to hire a hitman to murder his estranged wife. He ended up serving two-plus years of a six-year sentence, and it was revealed earlier this year that he had reunited with his As I Lay Dying bandmates. The band has since announced fall 2018 tours of the U.S. and Europe, with dates kicking off November 2nd in Phoenix, Arizona. Now, shortly after announcing As I Lay Dying as one of its 2019 perforrmers, Spain’s Resurrection has removed the band from the lineup following an outcry from certain fans. In a statement [via The PRP], the festival organizers wrote the following: “Given the controversy after the announcement of As I Lay Dying for next year, we would like to highlight our absolutely condemnatory position against gender violence. At the festival, we are aware that it is a huge problem in society, with which we must have a special sensitivity. Like other forms of intolerance or oppression, it has no place within our festival or within the scene of which we are part. Proof of our commitment is that during our 13 editions we have been an example of coexistence, or any other violent act. Furthermore, in the surveys of the assistants during the recent years, we have been given high results in terms of security. Resurrection Fest for us is a celebration of music in many of its variants and for the majority of our attendees it is the best week of the year. We still try to make a festival that we would like to attend to as public and where the passion for music and coexistence among all our attendees reigns. The decision to include the band As I Lay Dying in this year’s edition, the same way many other European festivals will do next summer, is that we believe in social reintegration and in the right of people to rehabilitate after having met a conviction. We understand that this opinion by the organization of the festival is shared by a large part of the festival attendees who requested the band in the polls. Given the debate and the division that was created among the attendees, and in order to maintain the prevailing atmosphere of harmony among the entire festival community, we finally made the decision after talking with the band of not including As I Lay Dying in the billing of this edition. We hope that everyone understands this situation. Resurrection Fest is an event for all types of audiences regardless of age or social group, and that forces us sometimes to make difficult decisions. Thank you very much for understanding. See you in Viveiro.” Resurrection Fest takes place July 3rd through 6th in Viveiro, Spain. The festival will feature Parkway Drive, Within Temptation, Trivium, Testament and many more bands. Source
  8. Zach Condon has announced a new Beirut album. Titled Gallipoli, it’s due for arrival February 1st through 4AD. The follow-up to No No No marks Beirut’s first album in three years and fifth overall. Work on the 12-track effort began back in Winter 2016 and saw Condon convene recording sessions all across the globe, including in New York City, Puglia, Italy, and Berlin, where Condon now resides. The indie folk songwriter reunited with No No No producer Gabe Wax, as well as made use of his longtime Farfisa organ, which fans might recall from his first two Beirut records, 2006’s Gulag Orkestar and the following year’s The Flying Club Cup. (Read: The Top 50 Albums of 2007) As a preview of the new album, Condon has revealed the title track. Its name is taken from the Italian town where Condon wrote the song. In a press release, he described how it came together: The next day I wrote the song I ended up calling ‘Gallipoli’ entirely in one sitting, pausing only to eat. I eventually dragged Nick and Paul in to add some percussion and bass around midnight after a trance-like ten hours of writing and playing. I was quite pleased with the result. It felt to me like a cathartic mix of all the old and new records and seemed to return me to the old joys of music as a visceral experience. This seemed to be the guiding logic behind much of the album, of which I only realized fully at that point. We spent the rest of the month in the studio in Italy, eventually finishing the bulk of the album by November [2017]. Take a listen below. In a longer statement, Condon further discussed how he — once a resident of Sante Fe and New York City — came to find himself recording in Europe (it involved a skating accident and some broken bones), and how it influenced the birth of Gallipoli. 9. Surviving Beastie Boys members Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz and Mike “Mike D” Diamond are set to release their long-in-the-works memoir on October 30th. The behemoth Beastie Boys Book spans nearly 600 pages and seemingly leaves no stone unturned as it tells the history of one of hip-hop’s most influential outfits. Ahead of its release later this month, excerpts from the book have begun to trickle out. To their credit, Ad-Rock and Mike D don’t shy away from even the most embarrassing lowlights of the band’s career. The New York Post has compiled some of those revelations, including the band’s decision to fire their first drummer Kate Schellenbach for being a girl; the truly awful original title to Licensed to Ill; and why they’re still spending money to store a giant hydraulic penis. “Unfortunately, when you’re a straight guy in your late teens/early twenties, you can easily fall into the stereotype’s own trappings,” Horovitz writes in the book. “[We] became what we hated.” Beastie Boys fired their first drummer, Kate Schellenbach, for being a girl: “We kicked Kate out of the band because she didn’t fit into our new tough-rapper-guy identity. Maybe Kate would’ve eventually quit the band because we were starting to act like a bunch of fuckin’ creeps, but it was just shitty the way it happened. And I am so sorry about it.” Before settling on Licensed to Ill, Beastie Boys’ first album had a truly horrific working title: “The original title to this record was ‘Don’t Be a Faggot.’ It was Rick Rubin’s idea. It was meant to be a joke about jock frat dudes but homophobia’s not funny and we are truly sorry.” Beastie Boys are still paying to store a giant hydraulic penis from their early stage show: “Seemed funny at the time … [But] you gotta really think before you say or do some dumb shit… Think about the people you care about most. Will they be embarrassed for you, and of you? Yes . . . And you’ll end up paying thirty years’ worth of storage locker fees in New Jersey for a 5-foot-by-5-foot dick in a box.” Meanwhile, in an interview with Rolling Stone, Ad-Rock and Mike D were asked whether there is a vault of unreleased material. “There is,” Horovitz answered. “Problem is, it’s not that good. We’ve got literally 50 hours of shitty stoner jams.” In addition to the personal andecdotes from Ad-Rock and Mike D, Beastie Boys Book contains rare photos, original illustrations, a cookbook from chef Roy Choi, a graphic novel, a map of Beastie Boys’ New York, mixtape playlists, pieces by guest contributors including Spike Jonze, Wes Anderson, and Amy Poehler, and more. You can grab your copy here. To support its release, Ad-Rock and Mike D have announced a short book tour. “Beastie Boys Book: Live & Direct” will feature readings, as well as a Q&A session with Mike D, Ad-Rock, and a guest moderator, plus a live score by Mix Master Mike, a new Beastie Boys art exhibit, and a mixtape curated by Ad-Rock and Mike D. You can secure tickets here. Source
  10. It’s been a little over a week since comedian Pete Davidson and pop star Ariana Grande called off their five-month engagement. While the singer has kept a low profile, the Saturday Night Live cast member spoke candidly about their separation during a comedy show over the weekend. Davidson co-hosted Judd & Pete for America, a benefit for Swing Left, with Judd Apatow at Largo at the Coronet in West Hollywood on Saturday, and he used some of his stage time to address the elephant in the room. “Well, as you could tell, I don’t want to be here. There’s a lot going on,” Davidson said. “Does anybody have any open rooms? Looking for a roommate?” Davidson had moved into the $16 million New York City apartment Grande had purchased for them, and E! News reports he’s now “staying with family.” He also joked about the numerous matching and tribute tattoos he and Grande got during their whirlwind romance, saying he’s been “covering a bunch” up. “I’m fucking 0 for 2 in the tattoo [department]. Yeah, I’m afraid to get my mom tattooed on me, that’s how bad it is.” He later added, “So, obviously you know I, we broke up or whatever but when me and her first got engaged we got tattoos. And it was like in a magazine like, ‘Was Pete Davidson stupid?’ And 93% of it said yes. So my boy, he was like, ‘Don’t listen to that shit man. They’re literally fcuking haters.’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, fuck that. I’m not stupid.’ And the other day we were in my I am a fagget and he was like, ‘Yo bro. Turns out you were stupid.'” Stupid though he may be, Apatow praised Davidson for showing up and following through on his commitment to the benefit show. “Well, you put me on the flyer, I had to,” Davidson joked. “Fuck my feelings.” “I care more about America than your feelings, I do,” retorted Apatow. “I care more about America than Pete’s feelings.” “I feel like I am America,” Davidson said. “I’m a good guy that just keeps getting kicked in the dick. You’re like, ‘Ah, that fucking poor kid. Hope he doesn’t kill himself.’ That’s America.” TMZ has reported that Mac Miller’s death from overdose was a driving force behind Grande and Davidson’s split. Grande had been in a longterm relationship with Miller immediately prior to Davidson, ending it after she could no longer deal with Miller’s drug abuse issues. Miller’s passing apparently put Grande in a dark place that she had yet to give herself time to fully address, which dampened her ability to maintain a romance with Davidson. She returned her $100,000 engagement ring to Davidson, but has kept their adopted pet pig, Piggy Smallz. Source

  12. Ozzy Osbourne has opened up about the infection and subsequent hand surgery that forced him to postpone the last four shows of his fall North American tour. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the metal legend reveals that it was a staph infection that could have killed him had it not been treated properly. As previously reported, Osbourne initially postponed a few recent shows until later dates in October when it was revealed that he had to undergo surgery to treat an unspecified infection. Shortly thereafter, he ended up canceling the October shows, saying he would make them up in 2019, when it was announced that he had to undergo more surgery for additional infections. Now, in his conversation with Rolling Stone, Ozzy has divulged that it was a potentially deadly staph infection he was suffering from, and that his right thumb had swollen to “the size of a fuckin’ lightbulb.” He first noticed there was a problem after a gig in Salt Lake City, whereby his wife Sharon had him rushed to an emergency room. “I didn’t feel sick, so I was cracking jokes,” he says of his ER visit. “The doctor said, ‘I don’t know if you realize, Mr. Osbourne, this is a very serious problem you have.’ Sharon said, ‘Would you stop fucking making jokes?’ So I said, ‘Well, it’s my hand.’ They’re all extremely, deadly serious about it.” It turned out Ozzy had three staph infections in his hand, with one spreading to his middle finger. As for the surgery, the Ozzy explained, “They cut all this stuff out. Even with the numbing stuff, it was agony. It wasn’t pus, but it was the stage after pus, when it gets in the blood and goes in your body and fucking kills you.” Ozzy thinks he may have contracted the infection during one of his meet-and-greet sessions, when he shakes hands with about 200 fans per night. The Prince of Darkness reports that he’s back home resting and “about 85 to 90 percent better” now, but has been severely hampered by his bandaged hand. “I haven’t been able to do anything,” he added. “I’m right-handed. You can’t wipe your own ass. And I didn’t have many fucking volunteers who would do it for me.” And he realizes now that he’s lucky his hand got treated when it did. “It could have been a lot worse,” he admitted. “I could have been dead.” The four October shows that Ozzy postponed — three in California and one in Las Vegas — will now take place in July 2019. Prior to his medical emergency, Ozzy and his band were on top of their game, as evidenced by the show we witnessed at Jones Beach in Long Island, New York. Ozzy’s “No More Tours 2” trek, which will pick up again on January 30 with a European leg, is being billed as his last-ever extensive tour. 13. Watch enough Lakers games and you’ll see every A-list celebrity on the sidelines. (Hell, Larry David made an entire episode around it for Curb Your Enthusiasm over a decade ago.) But, if you were watching LeBron James and his C-listers take on the Houston Rockers Saturday evening, odds are you saw Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis … and he wasn’t just sitting there like Jack Nicholson. No, the veteran singer, who clearly has a love for his city (see: the entire Chili Peppers catalogue), was ejected from the game after screaming all kinds of not-so-nice words at Rockets guard and State Farm spokesman Chris Paul. As you can see from the video below, he even stormed the court and approached Paul with a fire in his eyes that could rival the flames in the “Under the Bridge” video. The spat followed an even bigger brawl late into the fourth quarter, which resulted in the suspension of Lakers forward Brandon Ingram, Lakers guard Rajon Rondo, and, naturally, Paul, who was being escorted off the court when he crossed paths with Kiedis. The difference is that Kiedis gets to go home and probably surf, while the three have to watch from the sidelines for the next few games without pay. Ouch. Rest assured, Paul won’t be jamming to the Peppers anytime soon. AK (Anthony Kiedis) from Red Hot Chilie Peppers should of gotten kicked out the game for yelling profanities and flipping the bird to Chris Paul and the #Rockets staff. 14. There have been a lot of attempts to fuse traditional Indian and Middle Eastern music with EDM, and it seems to run the gamut in terms of success. Some fusion efforts can turn out haunting and gorgeous, while others come out downright hokey and even the wookiest wook at Youtopia wouldn’t be interested. Luckily multi-instrumentalist and wicked producer Mah-Ze-Tar’s latest album Liquid Lotus falls squarely in the haunting and beautiful category. Such a fusion of east and west is an incredibly difficult process, as both Indian and Middle Eastern music are set up differently structure-wise. The staffs, the notes and most importantly the timing are almost directly contrary to the more simple and regular structure of Western music. With the benefit of EDM being a looser structure which can accommodate the intricate madness that is Persian and Indian music, Mah-Ze-Tar is taking on a new challenge by also incorporating elements of jazz and classical music. As if this type of fusion weren’t tricky enough. In the title track off of Liquid Lotus, Mah-Ze-Tar (given name Maz) gives a fascinating performance blending traditional Persian violins and the Indian sitar with EDM beat which lands somewhere between trip hop and house. The juxtaposition of these beats gives Maz just enough room to jam the many and sundry notes of the sitar and Persian violin into the track without it sounding too busy or being overly intericate, taking away its danceability. The music is passionate and soulful, but what brings it all together is Maz’s own vocals. Ambient and indie-inspired, the existential and comparatively simple lyrics of “Liquid Lotus” float simply above the complex music, tying everything together and creating a more complete sound structure than if it had just been the music alone. It’s no wonder that Mah-Ze-Tar has played at Burning Man and Lightning in a Bottle in addition to being part of the Santa Barbara Middle Eastern Ensemble. He is truly straddling worlds with his music and with Liquid Lotus, he’s poised to gain recognition in all of them. The rest of the Liquid Lotus album is just as interesting and powverful. Look for it on Spotify or CD Baby. This article was first published on Your EDM. Source: New Artist Spotlight: Mah-Ze-Tar: A Little ‘Liquid Lotus’ for the Burners Source

  16. The Lowdown: MØ is Danish, and her name is pronounced somewhat like an American might pronounce the sound a cow makes. Audiences were exposed to her massive melodies after she featured on the worldwide smash hits “Lean On” and “Cold Water” by Major Lazer. MØ comes from the Scandinavian school of songwriting, where every part of the song is a hook, and no tune is ever hummable enough. Forever Neverland is her second album in that vein. The Good: If you like choruses that tend towards the epic, then look no further: Forever Neverland has more hooks than your local Bait & Tackle. MØ is at her best working with forceful collaborators, like on “Sun in Our Eyes”, produced by Diplo. Charli XCX stops by to add some Auto-Tuned attitude to “If It’s Over”, and Empress Of’s trademark buoyancy helps “Red Wine” soar. The Bad: It’s not generally a good sign that all the best songs on the album involve other voices. MØ is overqualified to be a ghostwriter but a bit underwhelming as a solo act. She’s got a big, distinctive voice, but a narrow emotional range. The lyrics may be full of joy or tending towards despair, but she delivers them all with the same sassy whine. This is one of the reasons that the songs on Forever Neverland all run together. It doesn’t help that the lyrics are impersonal, even generic. Not even a few carefully chosen “fucks” can give this music an edge. On the deluxe edition of her first album, No Mythologies to Follow, MØ included alternate versions of several songs, which she called “Night Versions.” The “Night Versions” are, without exception, improvements on the originals, and the difference is in the backing instrumentals. She trades in dancey drums and glittering synths for rich choral arrangements. The results sound a bit like Fleet Foxes producing Lykke Li — two artists with lots of critical acclaim and not much radio play. Perhaps, new night versions are coming, but right now Forever Neverland is unrelentingly bright. The Verdict: MØ deserves credit for consistency; almost every song on Forever Neverland is pleasant enough, but few rise above “pleasant.” The everything-is-a-hook songwriting style works better in small doses. By the end of Forever Neverland, your ear might feel the way your stomach feels after a Halloween sugar binge. This music is best enjoyed in moderation. Essential Tracks: “Sun in Our Eyes”, “If It’s Over”, and “Red Wine” Source
  17. This feature originally ran in October 2014. We’ll continue to share scares, old and new, as we creep towards Halloween. If it haunts, chills, or creeps you out, you’ll find it at Forever Halloween, where it’s Friday the 13th, Devil’s Night, and All Hallow’s Eve 365 days a year. Yeah, we’re pretty much sick bastards. If there’s one thing to learn about horror, it’s that anything can be scary. Terrifying clowns? Thanks, John Wayne Gacy. Old family portraits? Oh yeah. Evil dolphins? Simpsons did it. As we’ve discovered over the past year, music also has the ability to chill our bones and leave us counting the seconds under our covers ’til sunlight. Whether it’s rock or hip-hop or pop, every genre’s entitled to one good scare — in this case, 13 in all. Now, before you click ahead, know that we strictly chose pop songs that haven’t already been tied to relics of horror. In other words, we opted out of The Chordettes’ “Mr. Sandman” via Halloween II or “Jeepers Creepers” via (duh) Jeepers Creepers or Q Lazzarus’ “Goodbye Horses” via The Silence of the Lambs. Instead, these songs are on this list specifically for their own gloriously terrifying DNA.* So, click ahead and let your fears be popped. –Michael Roffman Editor-in-Chief * = Two inclusions were in episodes of Miami Vice, but neither scenes were particularly scary. __________________________________________________________ 13. Lady Gaga – “Bloody Mary” As a pop star, Lady Gaga has always flirted with the darker side of the mainstream, not just with her highly conceptual and frankly weird persona but also with her overlooked but intricate and defined lyrical content. Off her 2011 sophomore effort, Born This Way, there’s no better example of this than “Bloody Mary”. Over a throbbing barrage of synths, bleak imagery, and distinctly Gaga-at-her-peak intrigue, the song floats by with the darkly shaded menace of her unhinged vocal performance. There’s intricate wordplay exploring the subtle differences and religious implications of words like “cry” and “crucify” and blood-curdling screams thrown into her radio-friendly mix. If there’s any pop star that could adequately fill the infamously royal shoes of her song title’s ruthless namesake, it’s Gaga. –Josh Terry __________________________________________________________ 12. Rockwell – “Somebody’s Watching Me” Voyeurism and stalking are always interesting topics when it comes to music (as you’ll see later in the list). This was the premise of Rockwell’s “Somebody’s Watching Me”, which was essentially a Michael Jackson song because of his borderline shrill performance on the hook. You even got the horror show video — complete with scenes ripped from Psycho — to add to that Oct. 31st feel. However, perhaps the true horror, at least for Rockwell, is how he would never even come close to matching the success of this No. 2 hit for the rest of his career. –Brian Josephs __________________________________________________________ 11. Fiona Apple – “Hot Knife” Make no mistake, “Hot Knife” is a happy song. For once, Fiona Apple sounds assured and comfortable in a relationship, singing: “He makes my heart a cinemascope screen.” But here’s the thing: What if this song’s one-sided? What if Apple’s the only one who feels that way? Given the vocal repetition and the eerie percussion, lines like “He’s never gonna need another” and “Maybe I could teach him, too” start feeling just as sharp as the song’s namesake. But isn’t that the true horror of love? No one ever knows what’s going on inside their lover’s heads. They just assume. And usually the worst. #GoneGirl –Michael Roffman __________________________________________________________ Source

  19. One of the better small towns in Florida is Gainesville. A hotbed of punk rock over the last two decades, it’s also the birthplace of the late Tom Petty, which is why the city has gone ahead and renamed a nice, little park in honor of the former Heartbreaker. This past weekend, a dedication ceremony went down at what was formerly Northeast Park to celebrate Petty’s 68th birthday. Both Petty’s daughter, Adria, and his brother, Bruce, were in attendance and spoke to fans, even sharing memories of his youth. (Read: The Very Best of Tom Petty) “My brother and I grew up in this park,” Bruce Petty explained to the crowd (via The Gainesville Sun). “We played as kids. My cousin reminded me the other day of my remark that it was a sanctuary, and it really was,” Bruce Petty said. “It was a place for us to escape and be kids and have fun. The fact that we are doing this today and the part that we played in it makes it so much more special.” His daughter spoke highly of the city, digressing on an eponymous song Petty wrote for his hometown, which appeared on last month’s box set, An American Treasure: “Gainesville is an extraordinary place and if you listen to my dad’s music here, it has a different meaning,” she shared. “The idea of the air smelling good and the trees are green — there is nothing like this park to really illustrate that. ‘Gainesville’ has been blasting in my head since I landed … It’s a very important town to Florida. Florida is a really beautiful and complex state and (Gainesville) fosters a lot of intelligence and compassion and incredible manners and incredible decency.” (Read: Tom Petty Taught Me Everything I Need to Know About Love) The celebration extended to a number of activities throughout town. At Heartwood Soundstage, The Bayjacks with Tom Leadon, an early Mudcrutch member, revisited some of the singer’s hits, while local artists painted a Tom Petty Mural at Sidney Lanier Center, where Petty attended elementary school. 20. They say a picture is worth a thousand words — and Skrillex just shared one worth all that and more. While cleaning out some old photos on his phone, the producer found this one from back in 2015. He says it was around 4 am in Bangkok, Thailand when he had a memorable encounter with this little girl. What happened next is beyond incredible… “She couldn’t have been older than 5-6 years. Out there, some parents send their kids out to beg for money / sell stuff to tourist. I think she was trying to sell one of my friends a bracelet but at one point we made eye contact and then she started running over towards me smiling like an old friend I hadn’t seen in forever. I bent down on my knees and opened my arms to her and without any hesitation she jumped in and we started to hug. I’ll never forget the smile on her face and the way her warm energy made me feel. In that moment I felt this crazy connection with her. It made me pretty emotional.” Ugh, the feels. It gets even better… “At one point my crew who were waiting for me to get In the car told me it was time to go. I got up and started to walk over to the car and before I got in looked back and she was still there smiling. I bent down once again and opened my arms. she ran over a second and we stared hugging again. I told my team ‘WE HAVE TO TAKE HER’ In this moment I felt a tremendous love but a bit of sadness started to kick in. ‘It’s 4 AM and she’s on the streets with , we can’t leave her!’ I said. My tour manger at the time told me ‘Sonny we can’t take this girl, we are in a foreign country. that’s definitely kidnapping!’ During this time we were still hugging but it was time to go. It may have been hardest time I’ve had letting someone go from a hug.” The moment Skrillex shared with this little girl was most definitely bittersweet — but it’s amazing to know we can share human connections like these with people we’ve hardly even met. He says this “simple moment” had a “tremendous impact” on him. Our hearts… This article was first published on Your EDM. Source: Skrillex Just Shared An Emotional, Must-See Photo Source
  21. The art of the warm up set is a mighty fine one. Whether you’re opening up for a massive international act a major festie or just a local up-and-comer in that stingy nightclub down the road, the way you do your thing can have a massive impact on the night’s success. All you aspiring DJs are probably going to start as warm-ups too, playing to uninhabited dance floors with the venue manager giving you eyes from across the room. But fear not, this doesn’t mean you can’t shape your craft and get the crowd hyped in the best way possible for the act they probably came to see. There is perhaps more to it than you think though, so listen up as we run you through the dos and don’ts of the warm up set from some HD level warm-up set Alumni. It’s all about the music selection An instantly recognisable name in the Sydney club scene, Kato, is a DJ that has been around the traps for close to 15 years. His dominance and longevity in the scene comes down to his knack for creating a tailored connection with his crowd during performances. To Kato it’s one thing to play the bangers, but most importantly you must be flexible and well-prepped with a range of mixes and tracks. “I like to keep a certain energy with my warm up sets, I want to tempt people to dance but I also want the music to be interesting enough to enjoy if you’re not quite ready to dance. I also think about variables like the venue, time of day, what happened that day (are people coming in hot from a festival or big party? Did a new government get elected? Was it rainy?) and many other things that can affect your mood and the crowd’s mood so you can make a connection.” says Kato. You heard it here first, keep an eye on which Prime Minister we have each week and you’ll have the jump on the rest out there. Another big variable, as a warm up you’ll most likely go in not knowing if there will be 5 or 50 people at your set and you have to be ready for both. “It’s good to have as many tracks as possible that you know well, and you think will work well. Sometimes it can take longer than you think to build a dancefloor, but you also need to be able to pounce on it and take control once it gets going. Later in the night and headline sets can be a bit more planned but first you have to earn your stripes with the warm up so get digging.” How can you best prepare? One of the most common downfalls is undoubtedly DJ’s playing their favourite songs or mixes with complete disregard toward the other acts on the bill. It’s something that might make you happy, dropping that sick new rework you did of Flumes latest, but no matter how hard your vibing it behind the decks, the feeling isn’t mutual if the crowd came to see something different. Kato says do the research! Or risk a very flat response from the crowd. “I think it’s really important to listen to the sets of everyone playing on the night especially the person before you and after you. Then you think about your style and how you can present it in a way that compliments the others whilst maintaining your own unique vibe which as a DJ playing other people’s music is all you really have.” Kato says. RESPECT Another doing it large on the decks is A-Tonez, a killer Sydney based DJ who gave us some insight into his warm up days and secrets. For A-Tonez, it’s all about respect and knowing your place. “You need to have respect for the artist you are warming up for and do the right thing for the event as a whole. A good warm up is simply that, A warm up. Getting people in the right mood, setting the tone for the night. Not being the hero and trying to play all the latest bangers” A-Tonez says. Every-aspiring warm up acts also often come undone from a case of big head syndrome. It’s easy to increase the hype when you see the crowd arriving but according to A-Tonez, that not always the smartest thing to do. “I feel where most go wrong is panicking. Panicking when the room starts to fill up and they feel they need to go harder or play bigger tunes to keep the crowd interested. You need to be comfortable knowing the crowd is there for the headliner and waiting for them to start so they might have a little boogie to your set but aren’t going to go nuts. You need to have faith in your ability to choose the right music and your ability to control the room.” Mixing vs Track selection? It’s the age-old question that has pretty fair arguments on each side. Spend ages mixing tracks for your set? Or focus on a good set of tracks that you can choose at will? A mix of both? For big-time dance DJ Young Franco, it’s the versatility of track selection that makes it rain superior when set-prepping. “I can never really predict what a crowd will be like and the vibe of the venue. I think its extremely important to be flexible and not too locked in. I think you just gotta feel the vibe and go with it. It’s not always your job to get people on the dance floor within the first 5 seconds of being there. I think in order to build a culture around a venue/club and for that club to have longevity is to be consistent and not go for the easy bangers or what’s hot at the time. Otherwise your venue won’t last long.” Young Franco says. For Young Franco, it’s the creative license that excited when preparing his warm up set. “The beauty about a warm up set is that you can get a bit creative with it. There’s no need to play bangers to get the crowd going. You can really take it anywhere you want.” So there you have it. Tread lightly, but not too lightly. It’s a great chance to show some flair and get your name out there. These are our main ones to chew over. Know the crowd, venue and most importantly the other DJs for the night. Make sure you’re flexible in what you can play, have your music prepared to go either way. Mixing and track selection are both equally important aka (DJ) practice makes perfect Don’t make it all about you, it’s about giving the crowd what they want but also challenging them once they trust you. Have fun with it, it’s a party! Source

  23. Fifth Harmony singer Normani Kordei is teaming up with Calvin Harris and we already know the collaboration is going to be a hit! To make the hype even more real, the drop date just announced. The popular girl group member took to Twitter to share the news with her massive following. One thing about Harmonizers — they are on point with their social media game. In the tweet below, which has racked up well over 10,000 retweets, Normani reveals the collaboration comes out October 22. Ex-member Camila Cabello is still arguably the most popular solo singer to branch out from Fifth Harmony, but all the girls have some insane vocals. We can’t wait to hear what Normani brings to this production. In a recent interview with Billboard, she dished on her budding solo career: “I’ve been co-producing, I’ve been co-writing, I’ve been in with a lot of amazing songwriters and producers that I’ve been wanting to work with for such a long time now — that are actually fans of mine, which is kinda crazy. Sonically and creatively, I’m able to do absolutely anything that I wanna do now. It’s like a kid in a candy shop. It’s overwhelming sometimes, because there’s like so much you can do but the options are limitless, so I’m excited.” Meanwhile, Calvin has been killing it with pop/dance crossover tracks including “One Kiss” with Dua Lipa and “Promises” with Sam Smith. 24. The Lowdown: When Quavo isn’t creating trap hits with Migos, he’s collaborating with artists from a mix of other genres. His Huncho imprint has been heard on top-charting songs like DJ Khaled’s “I’m the One”, Travis Scott’s “Pick Up the Phone”, and Liam Payne’s “Strip That Down”. That same energy is what many were looking forward to from his solo studio debut, QUAVO HUNCHO, but that’s not what they’ll get. Instead, the 19-track album exposes the trap star’s weakness: an inability to consistently create attention-grabbing hooks and melodious verses. The Good: A few songs on this album are a reminder of Quavo’s potential to produce infectious hooks. On strip club anthem “GO ALL THE WAY”, the playful chorus not only elicits dance moves, but also sticks to the brain long after the album comes to an end. With a combination of Tay Keith’s matchless production and Huncho’s sweet trap hook, “SHINE” is another standout moment. The 27-year-old rapper also shines when his lyrics take a turn towards the playful. In his reply to Nicki Minaj’s “Barbie Dreams” on “HUNCHO DREAMS”, he says: “I see a queen on the tree-tree/ She like the ride that boy tree-tree,” jokingly referring to Minaj’s recent album cover and vague comments about her “new boy.” The Bad: In the streaming age, artists are aware of how streams affect the money they make from their albums, which is why many have increasingly released bloated records. Quavo takes this more-is-more approach, and it exposes just how many weak tracks are actually on the album. For instance, after several entertaining cuts, the album’s flow turns stale on “HOW BOUT THAT?” and hits a distasteful peak with Madonna’s verse on “CHAMPAGNE ROSÉ”. Other tracks like “BIG BRO”, “LAMB TALK”, and “KEEP THAT SHIT” all stink of bland rhythms that would’ve been left off a tighter album in another era. The Verdict: QUAVO HUNCHO ends up being a half-and-half affair: half making it easy to hit the skip button and the other half highlighting the talents Quavo brings to Migos. The hooks on songs like “GO ALL THE WAY”, “FLIP THE SWITCH”, “SHINE”, and “WORKIN ME” are what make him a special part of the group, and his playful ad-libs act as the gas that fuels the vibe he presents (when there is a vibe). Unfortunately, monotonous verses, tedious flow, and not enough hooks to go around quickly catch up to him. In the end, QUAVO HUNCHO can be either be perceived as a glass half full or a glass half empty. Essential Tracks: “GO ALL THE WAY”, “SHINE”, and “FLIP THE SWITCH” Source

Featured as TooGood‘s Artist of the Month, YUMI opens up about what it’s like having a superstar DJ/producer as an uncle. And, his involvement with her own music career. Although his fans have welcomed her unique sound with open arms, she says she feels she has to “work harder” to earn her place in the spotlight “I think that because he’s so big in the industry, I feel like sometimes I have to work harder to prove myself, which can be difficult,” YUMI explains. “But I feel like so far it’s been really great, and everyone’s been very supportive. I haven’t had much hate about that yet. His fans are really loyal, and so they’re die-hard for me, too.” “I showed him a few of my songs from this EP two years ago, and I was asking him for advice on what label I should submit to, and he was like, ‘Oh, you should put it out though Dim Mak,'” Yumi recalls. “I didn’t think that he would put me on his label, and I wasn’t expecting that from him. Every song that I’ve wanted to put out, he’s put it out through Dim Mak, and they’ve been so great and supportive. He shares all my stuff on social media and listens to all my songs.
