  1. The Los Angeles based 40oz cult bass music collective has been making a huge name for itself with its diverse cast of artists and music that represent the homegrown bass brand. Headed by dubstep mastermind Tanner Chung, aka Dack Janiels, 40oz has gone from obscure skater-bass music outlet to well known artist collective with showcases all across the country. The latest from 40oz Cult comes from Texas based dubstep producer Cromatik. Already having releases on massive bass labels like Black Label: NSD, and DPMO, Cromatik is well on his way to becoming a regular name in the bass community. His lends his sound to the 40oz Cult in the form of his Dead Space EP, showcasing the darker undertones capable in dubstep. With glitched out computer laced sounds and echoey basses in tracks such as “Malware” and the title track of the ep “Dead Space”, Cromatik definitely does something different with his productions. 2. RL Grime just let us in on the drop date of his annual Halloween mix — it’s coming to a speaker near you on October 26. That’s just 4 days we have to wait and 5 more days that we’ll get to enjoy it leading up to the holiday. While our minds are racing with what this might sound like, all we know thus far is: “The terror begins the second it starts.” The critics agree — “for sure!” If that review doesn’t shoot goosebumps up your spine, then we don’t know what will. Last month, RL Grime called on fellow producers to send him material for his much-anticipated yearly mix. Whatever concoction he has come up with for the seventh installment, we know it’s going to be killer. Behold, the official announcement poster below. If you need something to tide you over, his Halloween VI mix is still fire as ever. 3. It seems anyone can start a ‘serious’ techno label these days, the latest to jump on the bandwagon being none other than Law & Order stalwart and west coast rapper Ice-T. The label Electronic Beat Empire has just released its debut album, HIP HOP DJs DONT PLAY TECHNO and look, we’re not saying this sounds cheesy and uncomfortable. Wait, no, we are saying that. He’s teamed up with Afrika Islam who’s taken the moniker MR. X in what is truly a revolutionary name change. I’ve listened to more minutes of this album than I’d like to admit, so check it out below and tell us if I’m being a bit harsh. In an oversaturated market, this really doesn’t seem to hit the mark and putting a rapper’s name on a label shouldn’t be a viable idea. At the end of the day, they seem to have done something they’re passionate about and well, kudos to them I guess. Read more about it in the full Rolling Stone interview here. Source
  4. Chicago’s Amara Enyia received quite the boost last week when Chance the Rapper endorsed the relatively unknown community activist for mayor. Not everything was coming up roses, however, as the 31-year old apparently never closed the campaign account from her short-lived 2015 campaign and, according to the Chicago Tribune, “was fined by state election officials for not filing quarterly campaign finance reports as required by law.” She was left with a bill of $73,540, and Board of Elections spokesman Matt Dietrich said that in order for Enyia to run she’d have to pay the fines by December 20th. Now, thanks to a single donation, that debt has been resolved. The Tribune reports that, per records, the debt was paid by Kanye West. “The Amara Enyia campaign thanks Chicago native, Kanye West, for his generous action,” a statement from Enyia’s campaign reads. “Amara’s campaign is energizing people around the city with bold ideas and solutions that move Chicago forward. We are excited to engage people of all walks of life as we focus our efforts on getting on the ballot.” Say what you will about Kanye and his proudly uninformed view of modern American politics, but at least he’s giving one candidate a fighting chance. Chance and Kanye have a collaborative album coming out soon. Source
  5. Calvin Harris drastically switches up his sound for a new collaborative release with Normani of Fifth Harmony (at least, for the first track “Checklist,” which also features WizKid). The second track, “Slow Down” leans more toward the producer’s own chilled out house numbers he has been rocking lately. It was common knowledge, at least in the EDM world, that Normani and Calvin Harris were teaming up together — but this double-release comes as quite a surprise. “Slow Down” has the kind of feel we’d expect between these two artists and they knock it out perfectly. With “Checklist” though, Calvin Harris is almost camouflaged as WizKid and Normani work their magic to his addictive, sensual production. The shining star here is most certainly Normani. As a solo artist, it seems she’s slowly but surely separating herself from Fifth Harmony. It’s exciting to hear the route she is taking with her own artistry — pop, but far from bubblegum. Meanwhile, Calvin Harris sounds as amazing as ever and WizKid adds some extra flavor, making for repeatable results. Listen here and let us know what you think of this vibe! 6. Over the weekend, Jamie Lee Curtis smashed a number of box office records with her return to the Halloween franchise in David Gordon Green’s new reboot. However, this wasn’t the first time she’s revisited the role to commercial success. Twenty years ago, she similarly dominated the box office with the franchise’s other reboot, 1998’s Halloween H20: 20 Years Later. Now, she has regrets about the sequel, as she explains to Entertainment Weekly: “…to this day, I regret that I didn’t say to everyone, If Debra Hill’s not the one producing this movie, I’m not doing it. But what ended up happening was, she wasn’t part of it, John [Carpenter] wasn’t part of it, and I was still part of it, and it was a machine going down the road. I was excited about it, and, honestly, I was going to be paid well. I hadn’t made any money on the Halloween franchise at all. I mean, really, in all of those years I hadn’t really made any money. It just gave me a lot of fame. And now I was going to get a paycheck.” She’s not wrong: Halloween H20 was initially conceived to be one big 20th anniversary homecoming for Curtis, Carpenter, and Hill. When Dimension Films balked at Carpenter’s 10 million fee, the job went to, rather ironically, Friday the 13th filmmaker Steve Miner. (Read: Five Fun Facts You Never Knew About Halloween) Seeing how H20 went on to make a whopping 55 million dollars, Curtis certainly got her paycheck, and thankfully, as executive producer on the new one, Carpenter will most definitely get a piece of the 91+ million dollars that’s coming to this year’s installment. Sadly, Hill passed away in 2005, leaving one to speculate on what could have been had the three of them been given the opportunity to make the movie they wanted. Nonetheless, H20 exists, and, somehow, is better than what we got this year. Agree? Disagree? Don’t care? Stream reviews for both films below courtesy of our own Michael Myers podcast, Halloweenies. You’ll go in a slacker and come out a scholar on the franchise. That’s a guarantee. Listen and subscribe via iTunes | Spotify | Google Play | Stitcher | Podchaser | RSS Source
  7. Short. And. Sweet. When you’ve got something fire down in the first two and a half minutes, why waste time with an outro? Just throw it out there and let the wild ones have their way with it – that’s how we’re deciding to look at “KILO” by HVRCRFT, which is definitely weighty as the title suggests. All you get is 50 seconds of intro before absolutely mayhem befalls you amidst blistering synths and chaotic, swirling basslines. The first drop is all trap while the second doubles up the tempo and gets into hard trap territory with more distorted synths before falling back into that recognizable trap arm rhythm. Overall, it’s a party track through and through and you can expect a massive reaction from the crowd whenever this gets dropped. Check out “KILO” by HVRCRFT below, out now via Thrive Music. 8. Been there, done that. We can all find common ground here, and it is the topic of the brand new single from Toronto’s PUSHER & Nashville’s Caroline Kole, titled “BTDT”. PUSHER is no stranger to the game, racking up over 19+ million streams on Spotify alone and has also toured alongside Zeds Dead, Grandtheft, and Keys N Krates. Kole is the topliner as well as featured vocalist and she absolutely nailed it. She recently made the transition from a highly successful career in Country to Pop, where she shows now signs of slowing down. “BTDT” speaks to the frustration when someone in the relationship tries to repeat the past. Even adding the humorous “na na na na”, the song encapsulates this attitude perfectly, and is complemented by PUSHER’s wildly creative production. “Caroline has such a powerful voice and is such a fun person and performer. I’m very excited to be releasing ‘BTDT’ with her. In a lot of ways, 2018 has been a year of empowerment for women, and I think her lyrics are a fresh, fun, poppy reflection of that zeitgeist. I hope fans of Caroline and myself, and the as yet unfamiliar, enjoy the song half as much as we enjoyed putting it together.” – PUSHER Listen to “BTDT” below! 9. Myles Kennedy has released a music video for “The Great Beyond,” a track off his solo album, Year of the Tiger. The clip, which is in black & white, splices together live footage of Kennedy and his band rocking various theaters and outdoor venues. The video comes in advance of the singer-guitarist’s fall U.S. solo tour. Kennedy, who handles lead vocals in Alter Bridge and Slash Ft. Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators, released his debut solo album in March of this year. Speaking of “The Great Beyond,” Kennedy said in a statement, “That one is probably least congruent sonically, but it’s so epic in nature that it felt appropriate. It’s about the act of dying, and I tried to paint a picture of grim details, with surreal imagery. It was maybe the most challenging lyric to write, and to get through singing, but it was a very necessary part of the story.” Much of Year of the Tiger is inspired by the passing of Kennedy’s dad in 1974. “They describe how much his death is still haunting me,” Kennedy said. “Getting to that darker side, I didn’t know how different it was going to be for me, and how intense those emotions still were. What I found hiding in the deep, dark corners of my psyche was that this was still very real — so it was really cathartic to work through it.” Having just wrapped up a tour with Slash, Kennedy will hit the road on a solo trek beginning November 13th in Chicago. View the itinerary below. 10. Skrillex is on the verge of releasing some game-changing music — and eight years ago he was doing the same thing. His Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites EP, the followup to his iconic My Name Is Skrillex EP, really intensified his come up. The entire EP packed in a lot of heat, showcasing Skrillex as a multi-dimensional producer. From his “Rock N’ Roll” side to his raging “Kill Everybody” side, to the softer, melodic side heard in “With You, Friends” — a lot of ground was covered in this regular-sized EP. The title track “Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites” still remains one of the most recognizable EDM tracks on the planet. Not only did the EP go platinum, Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites landed Skrillex the Best Dance/Electronica Album Award at the 54th Annual Grammys. He also won Best Dance Recording with the widely popular track “Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites.” Needless to say, the massive underground and commercial success of this release gained Skrillex unmeasurable attention. It’s rare that music ages as well as this EP has, but Skrillex has always been ahead of his time. While we await his epic return, listen to this release all over again right here… Happy Birthday! 11. ASMR—autonomous sensory meridian response—is a very strange and interesting phenomenon sweeping YouTube, where people whisper into microphones and produce sounds meant to soothe. It’s not for everyone, including this writer, which is why I could stomach only a minute or so of this ASMR effort from Cardi B. The rapper recorded the 13-minute session with W Magazine, filling the time by discussing her own relationship to ASMR, her breakout single “Bodak Yellow”, and motherhood. All of it, of course, is presented in a hushed whisper, and she adds to the sensory experience by rubbing a fuzzy rug and playing with the clacking balls of a children’s toy. Check it out below. Cardi B gave a compelling interview to Jimmy Kimmel last week, and recently performed “Get Up 10” at the BET Hip-Hop Awards. She’ll return to the stage for a string of festival appearances in the coming months, including the Tropicalia Festival in Long Beach and Los Angeles’ Rolling Loud. She’s also said to be working on new music, which may or may not address her ongoing feud with Nicki Minaj. Source

  13. On October 26th, Mick Jenkins is set to drop his second album, Pieces of a Man, through Cinematic Music Group. In the lead-up to release day, the Chicago rapper has unveiled the LP’s full tracklist and a pair of new songs. The forthcoming effort spans a total of 17 songs, including Kaytranada collaboration “Understood”, which was one of our favorite songs of the week. Jenkins’ other special guests include rap legend Ghostface Killah, Canadian jazz-funk outfit BadBadNotGood, Corinne Bailey Rae, and Julien Bell. Jenkins has broken off two new songs today, “Barcelona” and his joint cut with Ghostface, “Padded Locks”. Both are steeped in sumptuous, shifting grooves, with the latter especially benefitting from a jazzy BadBadNotGood sample. “Fuck the dramatics, we get through them locks when they padded,” Jenkins raps, keeping his cool. Take a listen to both cuts below. Pieces of a Man follows Jenkins’ acclaimed 2017 album, The Healing Component, as well as his or more… EP series. Pieces of a Man Tracklist: 01. Heron Flow (feat. 16. Rammstein guitarist Richard Kruspe’s side project Emigrate, who released the stellar album Silent So Long in 2014, are returning with a new album called A Million Degrees on November 30th. 17. This year’s DJ Mag Top 100 has come and gone once again. For the millionth time, fans get up in arms about the entirely inconsequential ranking (unless you’re a talent buyer in Asia, I guess) and make a huge fuss about their favorite DJs not being included in the ranking… despite them not voting for their favorite DJs. For however many years running, DJs have been making a stink about the ranking for its name (“Top 100 DJs”) and the possible misdirection that gives to the list’s true meaning. It’s not about skill, talent, or even objective metrics, but rather about who can get the most votes. Most often, the DJs who are willing to put money into advertising for votes end up with more votes than those who don’t. I know. Shocker. Plenty of DJs had some choice words for DJ Mag this year. See all that we could find below. If the dj mag top 100 was actually not utter bullshit, @CalvinHarris would no question be #1. 19. Wonder Woman 1984 was supposed to come out 35 years after its title date, but now it’ll debut 36 years later. Warner Bros. has announced that it’s pushed back the film’s release a full seven months to June 5th, 2020. The shift comes with a parallel move as the studio has removed The Six Billion Dollar Man, a movie adaptation of The Six Million Dollar Man set to star Mark Wahlberg as Steven Austin, from its schedule. That freed up WW84, originally set for November 1st, 2019, to reclaim summer tentpole status like the original Wonder Woman. It’s also possible that WB/DC’s decision was impacted by Disney/Marvel’s recent removal of an untitled film scheduled for July 31st, 2020 (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, anyone?) from its own schedule. WW84 will now open a month after a different, as-yet-unannounced Marvel movie (May 1st, 2020), but it won’t have another major superhero production in its path for the rest of summer. The move also keeps WW84 from opening just weeks after Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix’s The Joker arrives on October 4th, 2019. In a statement, WB president of domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein said, “We had tremendous success releasing the first Wonder Woman film during the summer so when we saw an opportunity to take advantage of the changing competitive landscape, we did. This move lands the film exactly where it belongs.” Gadot herself tweeted the news to her fans, who will surely sulk at having to wait another half-a-year to see the sequel to the 2017 smash. Still, you can’t fault the studio for making what’s a sound distribution decision from their perspective. Super excited to announce that, thanks to the changing landscape, we are able to put Wonder Woman back to its rightful home. June 5, 2020. 20. In an explosive New York Times report late last year, multiple women came forward to accuse Louis C.K. of multiple incidents of sexual misconduct. All five shared stories similar in nature, claiming that the comedian asked to masturbate in front of them or physically did so without their consent. Notably, C.K. was said to have engaged in this inappropriate behavior while in a position of power — at the time, the alleged victims were aspiring comedians and fairly new to the entertainment business. C.K. subsequently admitted that the allegations were true and expressed remorse. “At the time, I said to myself that what I did was okay because I never showed a woman my dick without asking first, which is also true,” he wrote. “But what I learned later in life, too late, is that when you have power over another person, asking them to look at your dick isn’t a question. It’s a predicament for them. The power I had over these women is that they admired me. And I wielded that power irresponsibly.” Now, fellow veteran comedian and longtime friend Sarah Silverman has revealed that C.K. used to masturbate in front of her — albeit with her explicit consent. In an interview on the Howard Stern Show Monday, she recalled those incidents, which took place early on in their careers when they’d let “our freak flags fly.” (Read: We Won’t Get Fooled Again: Staying Alert in the Post-Weinstein Era) “I know I’m going to regret saying this,” said Silverman. “I’ve known Louis forever, I’m not making excuses for him, so please don’t take this that way. We are peers. We are equals. When we were kids, and he asked if he could masturbate in front of me, sometimes I’d go, ‘Fuck yeah I want to see that!'” Silverman made sure to emphasize that her masturbation encounters with C.K. were in no way comparable to those of his five victims, with whom C.K. had a clear power dynamic. “It’s not analogous to the other women that are talking about what he did to them. He could offer me nothing,” she explained. “We were only just friends. Sometimes, yeah, I wanted to see it, it was amazing. Sometimes I would say, ‘Fucking no, gross,’ and we got pizza.” Since the allegations first surfaced, Silverman has expressed compassion for C.K., as their friendship goes back more than 20 years. Speaking to Stern, she showed more of that sympathy as she attempted to explain how C.K. failed to understand the significance of his standing as a successful man in Hollywood. “Once he became powerful, even within just his [comedy] community, he felt like he was the same person,” Silverman said, “but the dynamic was different and it was not OK.” Silverman added, “I’m not saying everyone should embrace Louis again… I believe he has remorse. I just want him to talk about it on stage. He’s going to have to find his way or not find his way.” She told Stern that she and C.K. haven’t spoken in three months. C.K. has brought up the masturbation scandal onstage since relaunching his career over the summer. Unfortunately, I don’t think that rape jokes and complaining about financial setbacks were what Silverman had in mind. Listen to a portion of the interview below via TMZ. Source
  21. Up for release through Universal Music Germany is Steerner‘s ‘Off My Mind,’ a track that is guaranteed to stay in your playlists for the week. Steerner, who at just 21 years old counts support from Sub Focus and Adventure Club, is clearly on fire. He follows up ‘I Wouldn’t Lie’ with another blissful sound, designed to hit you in the senses. This is something of a soulful lament, but the production still carries itself with a polished vibe. He says: “Off My Mind’ is a song that doesn’t really sound like my previous productions. It’s a heartbreak song with deep lyrics that also give you a picture of how my life has been. This song means a lot to me and I really hope you will enjoy it as much as I do!” Listen here. 22. Following a brief slip up on Saturday wherein the mix was released early on Spotify, Nightmare On Rezz Street is now officially out! The mix was touted as a collection of unreleased, original music that Rezz had made in the past and was never released for whatever reason. “Just want to make clear that this mix is a combo of stuff I made years ago + also newer stuff,” Rezz explains. “It’s music that was sitting around on my computer & I wanted fans to hear either way because I always wonder what my favourite artists never released.” The 32-minute mix is also accompanied by a full audio/visual mix based on the contributions of a number of artists who all worked tirelessly to make this come to fruition. Rezz says, “I mean it when I say myself & my entire visuals team lost countless nights of sleep over this visual/audio mix but it is so worth it being able to give people this project as a gift for Halloween.” Finally, and perhaps best of all, the mix is available as a free download here. The full list of visual artists who worked on the video is available in the video description, but you can watch and listen to the full mix below. This article was first published on Your EDM. 23. The 2019 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees were announced earlier this month. The prestigious list included Radiohead, Rage Against The Machine, Janet Jackson, Roxy Music, Stevie Nicks, The Cure, and Def Leppard. For the 19th year in a row, however, Ted Nugent did not make the cut, and the right wing gun-lover is royally pissed out of his mind about it. “It’s sacrilege,” Nugent vented in a recent interview with MyGlobalMind (via UltimateClassRock). “It’s ultimately disrespectful and cruel to Chuck [Berry], Bo [Diddley] and Little Richard and all the founding fathers in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Because the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame means something, and I don’t have to explain to you, because you know, and you don’t have to explain it to me.” Eligible since 2000, the hard rocker proceeded to rant by quoting himself in the third person. “Abandon egos, bragging and Ted Nugent speaking on behalf of Ted Nugent – is it or is it not vulgar, dishonest, and obscene that Grandmaster Flash, Patti Smith and ABBA are in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, but Ted fucking Nugent isn’t?” he said in utter disbelief. “Is that the most outrageous and disgusting lie you have ever seen?” (Read: A Running List of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Omissions) As he’s done in the past, Nugent blamed the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame snub on the establishment’s supposed political bias, calling its directors an “ultra-leftist, liberal CEO-driven gang who couldn’t give a rat’s ass about the music.” Nugent is a proud member of the NRA and proudly advocates for less gun control in America. In fact, following the Parkland massacre this past February, he callously characterized the survivors, who were lobbying for stricter gun laws, as “pathetic” teenage “liars” who “have no soul.” Nugent is also unabashedly pro-Trump (and Kid Rock and Sarah Palin, oof), and vehemently anti-Obama — even to the point that the Secret Service was forced to investigate one of his public death threats against the former president. Nugent closed his diatribe against the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by issuing the following brazen challenge: “[W]ould like you to find a human being … and believe them when they say Ted Nugent should not be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame? I would love to witness that exchange. You would see a person almost melt with guilt because you know they are lying. At the end of the day, it’s not about me – it’s about the music. James Hetfield said it best when Metallica was inducted: ‘Ted Nugent not being in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is a joke. Ted Nugent is rock and roll’.” Over the weekend, two-time inductee and longtime Nugent critic David Crosby appeared to take Nugent up on his test, using himself as an example of someone unsurprised by the Hall of Fame omission. “That is really funny stuff,” Crosby tweeted. “He’s not good enough and he never will be ….a hack player and no singer at all ….could not write a decent song if his life depended on it.” That is really funny stuff ….he’s not good enough and he never will be ….a hack player and no singer at all ….could not write a decent song if his life depended on it https://t.co/vHzcSTMmPD — David Crosby (@thedavidcrosby) October 21, 2018 Source
  24. Seattle’s Jake Crocker is back with another well crafted production, “Fiend.” The tension-building progressions, full bodied drops, and emotional, breathy vocals work together to write a story to what sounds like a lover, but is really a substance. Not only is this track a memorable and unique representation of Jake’s artistry, but the lyrics also raise a stirring commentary on the impacts of today’s culture on our youth. Jake’s one-of-a-kind style paired with Kid Raiya’s emotive energy left us wanting more. “Fiend” is available for stream & download below, and is also out now on Spotify. 25. Bring Me the Horizon have unleashed a new song called “Wonderful Life,” which features guest vocals from Cradle of Filth frontman Dani Filth. The song will arrive on the band’s upcoming album, amo, which will drop on Jan. 11. Filth also appears in the video for the track, which can be seen below. “The lyrics for ‘wonderful life’ were done freestyle in the studio,” explained Bring Me the Horizon frontman Oli Sykes in a statement. “It’s stream of consciousness type stuff about getting old and out touch, being off tour & loving the mundane things in life, I guess because it’s so novel when your life is mainly spent on the road, things like weekly shops and mowing your lawn are quite nice- people who spend most of their lives away from home can surely relate.” He added, “I guess on top of that there’s this inner crisis I have of being a boring person but still having a desire to go wild inside me every now and again…but yeah all in all it’s mostly word vomit…but also some of my favorite lyrics. The beginning is 100% legit and the irony was just too good, so we left it like that.” In addition to unveiling the new song, BMTH also revealed that singer Grimes and rapper Rahzel make guest appearances on the album, as well. The tracklist can for amo is posted below. Bring Me the Horizon will hit the road on a North American headlining tour in support of Amo beginning Jan. 23 in Nashville, Tennessee.
