  1. Oli Herbert, founding member and guitarist of All That Remains, died a the age of 44 yesterday, as a result of an accident at his home (as revealed in an update to the story below). “Oli was an incredibly talented guitarist and song writer who defined Rock and Metal from the Northeast. His impact on the genres and our lives will continue indefinitely,” All That Remains said in a statement. “No further details are available at this time. The band and family request that you please respect their privacy and remember Oli by celebrating the great music he made.” Herbert had been with the metalcore outfit since its inception in 1998. He appeared on all nine of the band’s studio albums, including their as-yet-unreleased LP, Victim of the New Disease, which is due out next month. Update: Herbert’s widow, Beth, posted a statement online, saying, “Hello everyone this is Beth, Oli’s widow. Thank you all for the kind thoughts and words. I don’t want to go into what happened until we have a complete picture, but as soon as we do there will be a statement from the family on this page. In the meantime, please respect our privacy as there are still relatives being informed of Oli’s passing. Thank you.” Update 2: In a statement issued to MetalSucks by Herbert’s publicist, the guitarist died as a result of an accident at his home. The full statement reads as follows, “On behalf of Oli’s wife and family I can confirm that Oli Herbert passed away yesterday unexpectedly as a result of an accident which occurred on the property of his home. He was 44 years old. No further details are being released at this time. Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced once that information is available. The family requests for privacy during this time but does wish to express their appreciation to fans worldwide for the outpouring of condolences.” TMZ further reports that Herbert’s body was found in a pond near his home, and that his death does not appear to be suspicious at this time. 2. This week, Jimmy Kimmel is hosting his ABC late-night show from the Brooklyn Academy of Music. While Monday night’s episode featured a performance from Detroit native Eminem from atop the Empire State Building, the remainder of this week’s episodes are highlighted by New York-centric talent, including hip-hop heavyweights Wu-Tang Clan and Cardi B, Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Democratic congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Another New York legend, St. Vincent, served as the musical guest for Tuesday night’s episode. While originally hailing from Texas, St. Vincent’s Annie Clark has made New York City her home for the last decade, and she paid tribute to the Big Apple with a performance of the aptly titled, “New York”. The track originally appeared on her 2017 opus, MASSEDUCTION, but Clark opted to played the stripped-down piano-featured on the recently released reimagining, MassEducation. As such, she was joined by Thomas “Doveman” Bartlett, who she collaborated with on MassEducation. Replay the alluring performance below. Source
  3. For the last week, Kanye West was in Africa finding inspiration for his new album, Yandhi. While there, he posted a video to Periscope in which he praised his own intellect as well as his upcoming music, remarking, “the spirit of Fela, the spirit of Marley, the spirt of Pac… they flow through me.” Now, the son of Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kudi has spoken out against West’s use of his father’s name in the video. “On behalf of the Kuti family, I want to state that the spirit of Olufela Anikulapo Kuti isn’t anywhere near Kanye West,” Seun Kuti said in a statement posted to his Instagram. Seun Kuti also tagged Bob Marley’s son, Ziggy, in his post. While on safari, West and his wife, Kim Kardashian, also met with Uganda’s president, Yoweri Museveni, who has toughened the country’s laws forbidding homosexuality and even implemented laws that can find citizens imprisoned for not reporting gay people to the authorities, BBC reports. He gifted the president a pair of Yeezy Boosts, and, as such, is facing criticism from one of Uganda’s leading artists, Bobi Wine. Wine was famously arrested and beaten by Ugandan authorities in August for speaking out against the president. At the time, artists like Damon Albarn and Chris Martin signed a statement condemning Wine’s treatment. Now, The Guardian reports that Wine described West’s meeting with Museveni as “immoral.” He added, “[West] is hobnobbing with a president who has been in power now for 32 years and restricts any freedom, a country where opposition activists are tortured and imprisoned.” He continued, “It would have been great if he had used his voice for the good of people in Africa. I’m a musician but I am not allowed to stage a show in my own country because I disagree with the president. It is very disappointing.” The BBC quotes Dr. Jonathan Fisher, an expert in African politics at the University of Birmingham, as saying that Museveni likely wanted to meet with West as a way to get on the radar of Donald Trump, who he has praised in the past. The BBC also points out the ways in which Museveni has “changed the constitution in ways which have helped him stay in power.” Trump has repeatedly said in rallies he’d like to abolish the two-term limit as a means of keeping himself in power. 4. Another song that was alive in the era of bloghaus and heavy electro love. Eric Prydz is known for some huge timeless dance classics under a bunch of aliases (see Pryda or Cirez D). Despite his catalogue of heavy hitters, there’s no doubt that his most popular and most classic track is the house banger Call On Me. The tune known just as much for its sexy video clip as its elongated vocal hook that refuses to leave your head. The song itself is a relatively simple one but some would argue it paved the way for a style of house that became all too familiar and popular. At almost 15 years old, this simple hard hitting house tune is one that begs to be listened to on repeat until you realise you’ve wasted more time than you ever should have being hypnotised. Source
  5. Artwork by Cap Blackard Why do we love being scared? It can’t be the way it makes our heart beat at rapid rates. Or how it keeps us up at night, leaving us to clutch our sheets as we stare at our half-open closets and listen for the faintest sounds down the hall. What the hell is it then? What gives us the oomph to spend 24 hours at vintage theaters for horror movie marathons? Why do we feel the need to sit down and watch John Carpenter’s Halloween for the 568th time every time October rolls around? It’s really odd. For some, it’s an emotional release. Watching masked murderers hunt down hapless idiots or seeing nuclear families flee from the fractured promise of the American dream is a spiritually cynical escape from our own problems. It’s a cleansing of sorts that filters out our own personal anxieties that stem from real-world problems. So, in effect, these 90-minute B-fests serve as a therapeutic experience that a) costs less than your average therapist and b) traditionally involves candy and/or beer. For others, it’s a nostalgic thing. Growing up throughout the ’80s and ’90s, and even throughout the ’00s to a certain extent, there was a mythology to the horror movie genre. What made you scared said so much about you as a person. Whether your skin crawled over the sight of gore or your spines tingled at the sound of a werewolf, it was your fear to cultivate, and you wore that fear as a badge of courage. It was something to talk about on the playgrounds and in the aisles of your local video shop. Today, that connection seems different, if only because everything has been sterilized by being parsed out through various streaming services. We seek out horror in different ways now, not through physical scouring but through mindless scrolling. It’s kind of the same, but it’s also not really the same — overall, it feels like something’s been missing from the experience. But, here’s the thing: Fear will always find us, no matter what changes, and this list is definitive proof of that notion. Because no matter the time nor the medium, these films will scare you. –Michael Roffman Editor-in-Chief _________________________________________________________ Source
  6. ABC’s retooled Rosanne sitcom sans Roseanne, The Conners, premiered Tuesday night. *Spoiler* Roseanne is dead. In a nod to the real-life actor’s Ambien usage, Roseanne Barr’s character meets her fate due to an opioid overdose in the series’ premiere. As Barr was fired months ago, she does not physically appear in the episode. Instead, the episode focuses on the aftermath of Roseanne’s tragic death as her family tries to make sense of life without their matriarch and attempt to move on with their lives. The real-life Roseanne isn’t ready to move on, however. In a tweet sent following the episode’s airing, Roseanne proclaimed: “I AIN’T DEAD BITCHES”. In a more expansive statement released by her spiritual teacher Rabbi Shmuley, Barr further lashed out at the way in which ABC treated her character’s demise. “That it was done through an opioid overdose lent an unnecessary grim and morbid dimension to an otherwise happy family show,” the statement read. Barr also chided ABC for being “unwilling to look past a regrettable mistake, thereby denying the twin American values of both repentance and forgiveness,” adding, “The cancellation of Roseanne is an opportunity squandered due in equal parts to fear, hubris, and a refusal to forgive.” Of course, Barr’s statement doesn’t mention the reason she was fired in the first place: a late-night tweet in which she referred to former Obama aide Valerie Jarrett as the offspring of the “Muslim Brotherhood & Planet of the Apes.” She later blamed the tweet on her usage of Ambien. 7. Having recently released a disco remix of the song “Dance Macabre”, Ghost have now unveiled a music video for the original album track. The clip beautifully depicts the origins of a young Papa Emeritus and the start of his romantic relationship with Sister Imperator, a recurring character in the world of Ghost. The video (watch below), directed by Zev Deans, starts out with a bit of an homage to The Rocky Horror Picture Show, as two young men knock on the door of a party, with a creepy host greeting them at the door. From there, the two get separated, as one of them falls for a blonde woman on the dance floor. From there, the story of Papa and Sister Imperator begins. The song itself is about the 14th century Black Plague of Europe that decimated millions, with the video serving somewhat as a celebration of the End of Days. “It’s about dancing the night away,” Ghost frontman Tobias Forge (aka Cardinal Copia) tells us of the video. “Ironically, this video is a little bit about the beginning, whereas the song is about the end, but then again, the world comes to an end often. You can regard it as the beginning of [Papa and Sister Imperator’s] relationship.” As for the dance vibe of track, which is the latest single off the band’s Prequelle album, Forge explained to us, “Originally, I wasn’t necessarily entertaining the idea that it would be a Ghost track … but as soon as I started writing the full lyrics for it, I realized this is going to work [as a Ghost song]. I like the idea of trying to create unique songs … kind of like what Queen did — they have a hard rock song, then they synth song, then they have a ballad.” Watch the full video below, and be sure to catch Ghost on their upcoming North American tour, which kicks off October 26th in Tulsa, Oklahoma. From there, Ghost will embark on a headlining European tour of their own, before supporting Metallica in the spring and summer of 2019. See the band’s headlining dates here and their support dates on Metallica’s trek here. Source
  8. The Lowdown: Cloud Nothings have always been exceptionally skilled at combining punchy pop-punk melodies with blistering noise rock over their decade-long career. The delicate balance they strike between these two styles is their calling card, and the push and pull is invigorating to watch. Whereas last year’s Life Without Sound found frontman Dylan Baldi and the rest of the band exploring some of their brightest melodies in years, Last Building Burning pulls back towards urgent cacophony. The band’s second album with guitarist Chris Brown (not that one) finds his integration complete, as the frantic energy from the band’s live shows is wholly captured. The Good: After five forceful, short songs that make up the first half of the record, all with varying degrees of success, Side B finds the band at their most ambitious yet. It begins with “Dissolution”, an 11-minute centerpiece that evolves from a desperate plea into a slow-moving yet focused meditation before erupting into unhinged mayhem. Just under three minutes in, the song fades into a single line of feedback that is carried throughout as drummer Jayson Gerycz fades in and out with hammering fills before the full band unites for the explosive, cathartic conclusion. The tension of the band locking in together is palpable as a swarm of noise overwhelms in their heaviest moment yet. This segues into “So Right So Clean”, an exasperated gasp of a song that captures that last exertion you can force out in the throes of exhaustion. When reaching for audacious set pieces that flow together well, the second half of the album is a triumph. The Bad: Those five songs that make up Side A are tightly focused, energetic and catchy, but at times feel like retreads of songs the band nailed the first time around on 2012’s Attack on Memory or 2014’s Here and Nowhere Else. “Leave Him Now”, the best of the bunch, finds the band marrying their most upbeat melody with an unwavering force as Baldi begs a friend to leave a toxic relationship. Fury drives much of this record, whether it’s the self-reflective “In Shame” (an angrier version of “No Thoughts” from Here and Nowhere Else) or the pummeling onslaught of opener “On an Edge”. There aren’t any bad songs here, but juxtaposed with the sprawling second half, they can feel formulaic and repetitive. The Verdict: Though the individual pieces may blur together, the overall impression of Last Building Burning is deeply felt. The band have never sounded as in sync; the years of playing together as a cohesive unit have paid off. A ferocious album that finds them diving headfirst into experimentation, it is filled to the brim with a driving energy that rarely lets up. Striking the precarious balance of melding their pop inclinations with uproarious noise, Cloud Nothings push the dial back in the right direction. Essential Tracks: “Leave Him Now”, “Dissolution”, and “So Right So Clean” Source
  9. The 2018 BET Hip-Hop Awards aired this evening on BET, and it packed more than a few memorable performances from some of the game’s hottest names. Miami’s local hero Lil Pump opened the event with a medley of hits, including “ESKEETIT”, the Gucci Mane-assisted “Kept Back”, and, of course, his viral hit “Gucci Gang”. The Bronx-born Cardi B rolled out the Invasion of Privacy single “Get Up 10”, along with “Backin’ It Up” alongside Pardison Fontaine. Atlanta pair Lil Baby and Gunna flaunted their new unique collaborative album, Drip Harder, with a performance of “Drip Too Hard”. ASAP Rocky teamed up with YG to perform their new collaborative single, “Handgun”. This year’s BET Hip-Hop Awards were filmed at Fillmore Miami Beach earlier this month. The ceremony also featured a controversial cypher from Vic Mensa, which saw the rapper diss the late XXXTentacion. Source
  10. As with every year, the 2018 BET Hip-Hop Awards boasted a number of fierce, and sometimes controversial, cyphers. Chicago was proudly represented on tonight’s broadcast, with freestyles coming from homegrown talent like Vic Mensa, Taylor Bennett, and G Herbo. As we previously noted, Mensa’s pre-recorded cypher included a diss against XXXTentacion, the late Florida rapper whose career was mired in countless legal problems related to assault and domestic abuse. “Your favorite rapper is an abuser,” Mensa rapped. To make matters worse, his freestyle was performed while XXX’s mother was in attendance for the taping. (Read: In a Rap Beef, There’s No Such Thing as Crossing the Line) Following the backlash, Mensa apologized in an Instagram video — however, not so much for what he said, but the fact that he did so in front of XXX’s family. “I vehemently reject the trend in hip-hop of championing abusers, and I will not hold my tongue about it… Protect women,” stated Mensa. “With that said I was not aware his mother would be in attendance & I offer her my deepest condolences.” Even still, it seems BET edited at least a portion of Mensa’s cypher. As Pitchfork points out, the second part of Mensa’s barb was conspicuously censored: “[Censored] we all know you won’t live that long/I don’t respect [censored] posthumously.” It’s unclear what word or name was censored, but those who attended for the taping said Mensa specifically referenced XXXTentacion by name. Watch the full cypher below. Source
  11. A nice cold beer after a long day of life kicking you in the taint is one of our most treasured luxuries as Australians. Having that first mouthful hit the back of your throat and wash away any feelings of inadequacies is one of the most effective forms of self-care you can have. But, what the fuck do we have left if beer gets taken away? Well, that’s the uncomfortable reality that we operate in nowadays, and it’s all thanks to that fucking nerd climate change. via GIPHY Whatever your political affiliation, you’d be pretty fkn stupid to not at least acknowledge what thousands of scientists have said… or stepped outside and realised it’s preeeetty fuckin hot for autumn isn’t it. A new study from the United Kingdom’s University of East Anglia, and reported on by Business Insider, looked at a number of regions around the world to determine how climate change would affect barely yields. I’m very, very sorry to tell you that the results aren’t looking great. It looks like barely crops are going to suffer and as such, we’ll experience a 16% drop in the world’s beer consumption. To put into perspective how much grog that is, it’s a whopping 29 billion liters and the equivalent to the entire US’s consumption for the year. via GIPHY One of the study’s authors Dabo Guan reckons us beer drinkers are certainly in for a tough time. “It may be argued that consuming less beer isn’t itself disastrous, and may even have health benefits. Nevertheless, there is little doubt that for millions of people around the world, the climate impacts on beer availability and price will add insult to injury. “We’re not writing this piece to encourage people to drink more today than they would tomorrow,” Guan said“What we’re saying is that … if people still want to have a pint of beer while they watch football, we have to do something about climate change.” Better hop to it gang, because I am certainly not losing my frothies. 12. New Skrillex incoming! One of our first glimpses into the iconic producer’s updated soundscape comes in the form of this massive new ID courtesy of Ekali. He might have started off brostep, but this new production proves Skrillex is a trap lord as well (in case you had any doubt). Of course, the producer is a chameleon when it comes to music, taking on any genre he so desires and executing every time. Deep horns and electrifying bass elements drive this heater into uncharted Skrillex territory. Some vocal chops sweeten the mood, but this ID is 99% heavy. If we heard this live at Ekali’s show firsthand, we’d probably still be picking our jaws up off the floor. Ekali recently said he heard the new, unreleased music from Skrill and “it’s very fucking good.” Brownies & Lemonade confirmed that notion — “if u think new music from skrillex is coming soon.. ur absolutely right and it’s gonna change the game [sic].” Listen and let us know what you think… We think this needs to release now. 13. We’ve all seen the types of “Chads” at EDM shows who are muscled out and wear tank tops that are two sizes two small hitting on women and drinking vodka red bulls through those thin straws. Their shirts generally have some type of stereotypical raver phrase like “I <3 MOLLY” or “WHERE THE THOTS AT?” While there’s no indication that this person was at Printworks London this past weekend, it’s certainly the kind of person that this story paints a picture of… A statement from Printworks yesterday explains that Sunday’s Solid Grooves event was cut short “after an internal pipe was damaged, causing water to come into the venue.” According to witness reports, the reason for the damage to the pipe was because someone was allegedly attempting to do chin ups on it. I think we can all safely say that we’ve seen a pipe overhead and thought about doing a few reps, but it seems this person got the short end of the stick. Read Printworks’ statement and watch a video of the crowd being ushered out while water begins to flood the venue below. 14. Early this year What So Not unleashed his debut album Not All The Beautiful Things and with that came his long-awaited collaboration with Skrillex. For a stretch of time, the only way to hear “GOH” was to catch a live set. As of late, however, the crowd-pleasing track is sounding quite different. Behold, the brand new and totally insane DnB version of “GOH,” as played out What So Not recently. Sharp, striking drums and room-shaking rhythm hype the track up to extreme, as the most recognizable elements of “GOH” take on new form. It’s a show-stopping production through and through. Fans have immediately speculated this to be a VIP or remix of the already untamed track. Just a scroll into the comments on r/Skrillex and Signal has revealed it’s actually his take on this monstrous release. “Hey guys!” he exclaimed, popping into the comment section. “This is the second drop of my official remix of Goh (first drop is halftime/trap) Thanks for the nice comments!” The way he got his hands on the stems is actually pretty funny, too. “When my management first told me I could choose a track to remix I jokingly told them, ‘Get me that Skrillex one.’ Didn’t expect everyone involved to actually give me that chance.” Listen to the banger below and revisit What So Not’s entire debut album here. 15. When you’ve rinsed your albums that heavily across the years it’s the live edits that make your day, so you pour your time over your artist of choice’s timeless songs in concert form. What makes an album ready for live rinsing is the ability to capture what was going on in the crowd and how the artists genius of blending their well crafted songs together into a fresh sequence never heard before. We cover a variety of artists to showcase what we see as some of the biggest live albums across the internet. We hope you enjoy it as much as we have. Dive in below and get stuck in a spiral of epic electronic live shows! Justice: A Cross The Universe You know a live album will be fantastic when the intro to it on Youtube is just screaming fans for an entire 39 seconds. A Justice live performance is quite likely to be in hot anticipation of DANCE and when their bringing their live album versions they bring out two different versions to spoil you and get a rightful spot on the top 5 best electronic live albums of all time. Fun Fact: Gaspard and Xavier refashioned Simian’s Never Be Alone in a radio remix competition for a bit of fun, not knowing that their effort would be discovered by Busy P (Pedro Winter) who at the time was managing Daft Punk. They did not win the competition, however the remix was later released as We Are Your Friends and went on to become one of their biggest tracks yet. (Check more Justice facts here) Daft Punk: Alive 2007 When one of the top posts on the Daft Punk subreddit is a post about how you are more likely to win the lottery than see a Daft Punk tour it’s apparent the live album is the saving grace with the barely salvageable camcorder recordings you can find scattered across Youtube, you’re lucky the Official Daft Punk Youtube page fills you in with the audio available for free streaming. Fun fact: The stage design of the colossal pyramid was something never seen before when it came out in its full glory at Coachella in 2006, it quickly became one of the most impactful stage designs to date. Bonobo: The Northern Borders Live If Bonobo wasn’t already enough of a treat when played through your trusted headphones, live is a whole other experience. He packs a lot of punch with the live instruments that he incorporates into the show, along with his own bass guitar playing and other electronic equipment. Got to give the man full credit for how he composes such amazing music when you hear how many harmonies are created when a full orchestra gets into the thick of one of his songs. We have a cheeky live video of what goes down in a Bonobo set from boiler room as well as the audio so you can get a vibe for both the audio and visual. Fun fact: Bonobo doesn’t like his music being called downtempo or chilled, so if you think that with the live show, you shouldn’t be telling him when you’re asking for a signature after the gig! The North Borders Tour. – Live. by Bonobo Four Tet: Live at Funkhaus Berlin, 10th May 2018 We love a Four Tet sound, with the soothing atmosphere and progressively more complex tunes, the recording of his bigger songs put into a live album earlier this year, reveals how organic Four Tet’s music really is. His affliction for bringing in obscure samples into his tracks is something you would not want to miss him for. Combine that with his love for texture modulation and you have yourself a live album worth every frequency exuded. Fun fact: Four Tet recorded an album called New Energy, which was announced as being done in this nifty small space which had the internet ablaze with their nifty spaces of where their albums were made. The live album that has been recorded and put online a couple of times, like at Funkhaus Berlin was another level! Live at Funkhaus Berlin, 10th May 2018 by Four Tet Kraftwerk: Minimum-Maximum. Kraftwerk were turning heads in times when current heads probably weren’t even turning yet. The group being a quintet that are known for being some of the originators of electronic music we have a lot to thank them for. Their early use of vocoders and equipment like the Minimoog have these guys paving the way for producers today. The efficiency and contribution of their music is what gives them a rightful entry in the list – got to respect the originators. Fun fact: They declined opening for David Bowie. Which means we missed a possible live recording of a David Bowie support act! Special mentions go to Underworld and their live album for Barbara Barbara where they end with Born Slippy .NUXX that gets us every time. (Catch them at Electric Gardens in November!) This is by no means a definitive list, but we’re struggling to think of much better. So have a think and tell us what you’d add! Source
  16. After dropping “Breach (Walk Alone)” with Blinders yesterday, Martin Garrix is back with the second single of this week, “Yottabyte.” This is another ID that has been long-awaited by fans, and it should be immediately recognizable to anyone who’s been to one of his sets in at least the past year. While we correctly assumed yesterday that we’d be getting music videos for each track, what we didn’t know is that they’d be connected! The same main character in “Breach” makes an appearance in the video for “Yottabyte,” though he doesn’t have much of an active role. Whereas he was interacting with people trapped in a VR drug-induced nightmare before, he’s now watching dozens of people’s lives through a series of screens in a warehouse. Watch the video for “Yottabyte” below. It should also be noted these songs are being released at around midnight in Amsterdam time, so the third track of the week, “Latency” with Dyro, is also already available! This is another long-awaited ID and one of Garrix’s fan favorites. The bassline is absolutely addicting and is a smash hit on the main stage with heavy super saw synths a pounding four on the floor beat. Our protagonist returns for a third time, seemingly hidden within the personalities of a dozen or so different individuals as they traverse an unidentified European town. In other news, Martin’s EP is now officially entitled By Law. With “Breach,” “Yottabyte,” and “Latency” out now, we can expect “Acces” tomorrow and, finally, “Waiting For Tomorrow” on Thursday. 18. Major Lazer made good on their vow last month to put out a ton of new music, supporting African artists with four new tracks. Now, they’re moving back to Europe for a new collaboration with Tove Lo, “Blow That Smoke.” Though the featured artist may be from a different region, Major Lazer is still continuing to push the same dancehall-inspired vibes that endeared them to fans a decade ago. Tove Lo posted a short snippet of the collaboration to Twitter yesterday. Whether this song will end up as a single on Major Lazer’s final album or on one of Tove Lo’s own projects is still up in the air, but we’ll be getting the full single tomorrow, October 17. 19. Last week, Dillon Francis vowed to wax “ZEDD” into his chest if either his Instagram post received 10,000 comments or his tweet received 10,000 retweets. Well, the tweet his the mark first, and Dillon, being the class clown that he is, geared up for one of the most painful experiences of his life. (Seriously, waxing is no joke.) The waxing occurred earlier today with Zedd there to witness all of it, and while neither artist has shared the aftermath on their social feeds, Zedd did manage to capture the finished product on his Instagram Story – see below. 21. It’s the 20th anniversary of Hole’s 1998 album, Celebrity Skin, and Courtney Love is celebrating with a group of roughly 1,500 people. In July, she teamed up with that many guitarists, drummers, and singers at Florence’s Artemio Franchi Stadium for a performance of hit single “Celebrity Skin”, with proceeds benefitting Italian non-profit Only the Brave Foundation and the San Patrignano youth recovery community. The musicians are part of a charitable collective called Rockin’1000, and, back in 2015, they gave a few Foo Fighters’ songs the same treatment. In the aftermath of that performance, Love found herself enamored with the concept. “The first time I saw the Rockin’1000 video, I thought, I want to do that,” Love says in the accompanying video of the performance. “The sight and sound of a thousand musicians connecting with their audience in this open, transcultural way was incredible. It reminded me of the early punk scene, with its community centered around diversity and acceptance.” Watch it below and marvel at how surprisingly great it sounds. This wasn’t Love’s first live performance of “Celebrity Skin” this year. She joined Smashing Pumpkins’ at their 30th anniversary show in August to sing that song as well as “Malibu.” Source
  22. Thom Yorke, frontman for Radiohead, is using his talents for good – supporting environmental activism with a new solo track, “Hands Off the Antarctic”, and an accompanying music video. The song and video are coming out in support of a new campaign by Greenpeace to set up a vast Antarctic ocean sanctuary. The video itself, a stark black-and-white showcase of the environment and wildlife of the region, is culled from Greenpeace’s own footage taken during a three-month research expedition early in 2018. According to a statement from Yorke, “There are some places on this planet that are meant to stay raw and wild and not destroyed by humanity’s footprint. This track is about stopping the relentless march of those heavy footsteps. The Antarctic is a true wilderness and what happens there affects us all. That’s why we should protect it.” This sentiment is matched by Frida Bengtsson of Greenpeace’s Protect The Antarctic Campaign, who notes that “The Antarctic doesn’t have a voice but we are a movement of two million people and we do. We’ve seen around the world what happens when we don’t put areas off-limits to human activity. This vast wilderness is more fragile than we might think and plays an important role for the planet’s climate and ocean systems.” Later this month, the Antarctic Ocean Commission will meet in Tasmania to discuss the proposed site, which would offer sanctuary to many species that live in the area, including whales, penguins and seals. Watch the music video for “Hands Off the Antarctic” below. Next week, Yorke will make his film scoring debut in Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria. Source
  23. The former president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, has followed in the now-grand tradition of world leaders posting stupid stuff on Twitter. To mark the 52nd birthday of the Black Panther Party, Ahmedinejad tweeted lyrics from Tupac Shakur’s “Changes”. Granted, having a silly old man who uses social media to post inane, out of touch sentiments is nothing new, and certainly a break from his tendency to denounce homosexuality, deny the Holocaust, and generally have a negative impact on human rights in his own country. Still, today’s latest hot take from the Ahmedinejad Twitter is pretty baffling: One of the main objectives of the #BlackPantherParty was feeding the hungry; which did not sit well with the #UnitedStatesGovernment . #BrotherHuey #October15 " It's time to fight back that's what Huey said. Two shots in the dark, now Huey's dead" — Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (@Ahmadinejad1956) October 15, 2018 Ahmedinejad frequently attempts to jab his finger onto the pulse of American culture and history over Twitter, like when he tweets half-woke stuff about Colin Kaepernick, or claps back at Trump about dissing LeBron James. What can we say? He always makes time for #Twitter. It’s hard to tell what the former president is even saying about the Black Panthers here; suffice to say, don’t rely on Ahmedinejad for your understanding of the Black Panther Party. 25. “The Experience Hendrix Tour”, a celebration of the life and music of rock legend Jimi Hendrix, will be returning for a U.S. run in spring of 2019. The musical trek features an all-star band headlined by drummer Billy Cox who played as a member of both The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsys. Joining him onstage to perform Hendrix’s music and likely a wealth of other tunes in 2019 is a murderer’s row of talent including Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine; master guitarists Joe Satriani, Dweezil Zappa, and Eric Johnson; and King’s X bassist/vocalist Doug Pinnick. In a statement released with the tour announcement, Mustaine had this to say about his participation in the Experience Hendrix Tour: “Jimi Hendrix. The name that comes to my mind as one of the ‘Premiere American Guitarists of All Time.’ An Innovator, and legendary musician, I am beyond honored to do my part in this tribute to the immortal Jimi Hendrix, and want to thank [EH Tour producer] John McDermott for inviting me to play along such mind-blowing guitarists as Joe Satriani, and a personal favorite of mine, Eric Johnson. See you there!” That core group of musicians will be joined along the way by special guests including Taj Mahal, Los Lobos members David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas, and Isley Brothers member Ernie Isley. The concerts have been taking place off and on since 2004, with its last batch of shows hitting stages on the West Coast and Midwest in 2017. This time around, the trek kicks off in Florida at the Pompano Beach Amphitheater on March 3rd and wends through the South and Midwest before wrapping up on the East Coast with a show at the Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, Connecticut, on April 6th.
