  1. Toronto punk outfit PUP have announced their third full-length, Morbid Stuff. The follow-up to 2016’s The Dream Is Over is due out April 5th on the Toronto band’s new label, Little Dipper (via Rise Records/BMG). PUP recorded the album with producer/mixer Dave Schiffman (Weezer, The Mars Volta) as they dug into lead singer Stefan Babcock’s battle with depression. Fans of the band’s playful look at life’s emotional wasteland need not fret, however, as a press release promises the effort contains “all the fury and celebration you’ve come to know, but rooted in understanding of where that fury comes from.” The guys are still teetering on the precipice of complete desolation with manic joy, they’re just more aware of their footing — a state truly befitting the title, when you think about it. Such is the case with the LP’s lead single, “Kids”. Charging gleefully towards insanity, Babcock yell-sings about “navigating my way through the mind-numbing reality of a godless existence.” As always with PUP, the track embraces the misery by wrapping it in melodic, driven punk chords and thunderous gang-vocals. As Babcock explains in a press release, after all, it’s only together that you can learn to survive this “desolate planet:” “‘Kids’ is a love song from one nihilistic depressive to another. It’s about what happens when you stumble across the only other person on the face of this godless, desolate planet that thinks everything is as twisted and as fucked up as you do. And thanks to them, the world starts to seem just a little less bleak. But only slightly — it’s still pretty fucked up to be honest.” Check out the track below. Pre-orders for Morbid Stuff are live now. Also available is “The PUP Morbid Stuff Annihilation Preparedness Kit”, a full pack featuring a CD or limited edition colored vinyl LP, a long-sleeved tee, a backpack with patch, custom band-aids, a multi-tool, a waterproof container, and more. There’s even a extra limited edition version that comes with — and this is 100% true — a full-sized inflatable boat. Snag yours via PUP’s merch store. 2. The Drums have announced a new record called Brutalism. The nine-track LP follows 2017’s “Abysmal Thoughts” and is due out April 5th via ANTI-. Brutalism marks just the second album from The Drums since the band became the solo project of Jonny Pierce. Interestingly, the recording process found Pierce relinquishing much of the control he’d typically maintained on past efforts. He wrote and recorded the music between New York and Stinson Beach outside of San Francisco, sharing production duties and bringing in Chris Coady (Beach House, Future Islands) to mix it. For the first time, Pierce also worked with outside musicians, including The Drums’ first-ever in-studio live drummer. Pierce’s decision to open up his work to others came as a byproduct of his renewed focus on self-care, a central theme of Brutalism. Having just come out of a divorce and struggling with a solo life in Los Angeles, Pierce found himself in a “downward spiral” of over-partying and exhaustion. Making the decision to focus on his mental health meant letting go of his usual “control freakery,” which allowed for deeper collaborations with others. The resulting tracks are raw yet warm, as with lead single “Body Chemistry”. It sounds something like a beautiful panic, a pop song about realizing that you may not be able to resolve your flaws — and that’s okay. As Pierce explains in a press release, “For the year prior to writing this song, I had been dealing with an increased feeling of depression. To counter that, I was doing all I could do to try and make myself feel good: implementing all sorts of self-care, going to therapy, eating well, exercising at the gym, taking a step back from partying, and focusing on positive relationships while weeding out the not-so-good ones. I still found myself weighed down with anxiety and depression. This song asks the question: Is this dull, sad feeling in my DNA? Is it part of my gene pool? Can it ever be corrected? I had been confronting some of my most stubborn demons, and I came to realize that confronting doesn’t always mean conquering.” Take a listen: Brutalism is available for pre-order now. 3. Over the holiday season, Fox released a PG-13 cut of Deadpool. Dubbed Once Upon a Deadpool, the edit removed all of the bloody violence and potty-mouthed dialogue, replacing it with an admittedly inspired framing device in which Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) kidnaps Fred Savage and forces him to relive The Princess Bride as he recounts the tale of Deadpool and X-Force. Despite the neat trick, Rotten Tomatoes Critics Consensus agreed that the additional scenes didn’t “add enough to Deadpool 2 to justify its own existence.” Well, Fox is surely feeling justified in the film’s existence, because the PG-13 version just secured a Chinese release. Neither Deadpool nor Deadpool 2 made it to theaters in China, an inevitability given the country’s strict standards and the movies’ hard-R visuals and scripts. Both films were plenty successful without a Middle Kingdom release, with the former the former raking in $783 million worldwide and the latter tallying $743 million. Still, in this modern era of entertainment consumption, the Chinese market is the Golden Cow, with Hollywood studios frequently gearing films as much towards China as the US. Hence, even if its a less vicious Merc with a Mouth hitting the screens, it’s something of a coup to get Deadpool on Chinese screens. Though Once Upon a Deadpool’s already added $6 million to Deadpool 2’s overall box office, its true boon could come once it opens in China on January 25th. According to Variety, the Mandarin title translates to Deadpool 2: I Love My Home and is being advertised with a poster of the title character placing his hands over his mouth alongside the words, “I just won’t tell you.” Whether or not Chinese audiences embrace a watered-down sequel without having ever (legally) seen the original is yet to be seen, though it’s encouraging that other bloodless superhero flicks like Venom and Aquaman have done extremely well in the Middle Kingdom. 4. Back in November, Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer Karen O and super producer Danger Mouse unveiled “Lux Prima”, the first single and title track to a forthcoming collaborative album. Now, the dynamic duo have divulged a release date for the LP — March 15th through BMG — as well as shared a second single in “Woman”. “‘Woman’ came like a bolt out of the blue when we were in the studio,” says Karen O in a press release. “We did a first pass where I was blurting unintelligible words and Danger Mouse and I were like ‘Dang! That was intense. What’s that word I keep saying? Woman.’ The atmosphere was volatile with it being just after the election. A lot of people felt helpless like you do when you’re a scared kid looking for assurance that everything is gonna be alright. I like to write songs that anyone can relate to but this one felt especially for the inner child in me that needed the bullies out there to know you don’t fuck with me. I’m a woman now and I’ll protect that inner girl in me from hell and high water.” Take a listen to “Woman” below. Additionally, Karen O and Danger Mouse have detailed the album’s nine-song tracklist, which you can find listed out below. Pre-orders are ongoing. Lux Prima Tracklist: 01. Lux Prima 02. Ministry 03. 5. First we got Captain Marvel. Then came Avengers: Endgame. Now, Marvel Studios has completed its 2019 trifecta by releasing the first look at Spider-Man: Far From Home. As its title suggests, the sequel to 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming finds our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man a long ways away from New York City. Rather, young Peter Parker (Tom Holland) has embarked on a summer Eurotrip alongside MJ (Zendaya) and his other high school classmates. However, once he’s paid a visit by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), he suddenly finds himself back on the job. That includes getting two new suits — a red-on-black take on the classic duds and a “stealth suit” that bears a resemblance to the Spider-Man Noir character Nic Cage voiced in Into the Spider-Verse. Perhaps more importantly, the trailer provides got our first look at Jake Gyllenhaal as the villain Mysterio, complete with marvelously comic-accurate costume. It’s a role the actor only just confirmed himself to be playing, but let’s be honest, we all saw through that smokescreen. What we didn’t see coming, though, is the fact that Mysterio isn’t positioned as the bad guy in the preview. Instead, we see giant creatures made of water, fire, and stone terrorizing major European cities — and it’s Mysterio who seems best equipped to battle them. Check out the trailer below. Speaking at Comic Con Experience in Brazil back in December, Gyllenhaal hinted at the creatures we see in the trailer. He called them “the Elementals” (so, Internet, can we stop calling that water thing Hydro-Man? It’s not, move on.), saying that his character Mysterio “is someone who knows about them and wants to make sure that the world is safe from them. And Nick Fury asks him to come on and help because he’s the only one who really understands them.” The Elementals do have Marvel Comics origins. In the books, they’re a foursome of immortal beings whose magical powers are connected to the four elements: Hydron, Lord of Waters; Magnum, Master of the Earth; Hellfire, Wielder of Flame; and Zephyr, Mistress of the Winds. If we assume the lightning storm attacking the London Bridge is Zephyr, all four appear in the Far From Home trailer. Savvy comic fans will already be wondering how Mysterio, known as the Master of Illusions, might be using these creatures’ “appearance” to his advantage… Opening July 5th, 2019, Spider-Man: Far From Home was directed by Jon Watts from a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. In addition to Holland, Gyllenhaal, Zendaya, and Jackson, the film stars Marisa Tomei (Aunt May Parker), Jacob Batalon (Ned), Jon Favreau (Happy Hogan), and Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill). Find the synopsis and new poster below. “Peter Parker returns in Spider-Man: Far From Home, the next chapter of the Spider-Man: Homecoming series! Our friendly neighborhood Super Hero decides to join his best friends Ned, MJ, and the rest of the gang on a European vacation. However, Peter’s plan to leave super heroics behind for a few weeks are quickly scrapped when he begrudgingly agrees to help Nick Fury uncover the mystery of several elemental creature attacks, creating havoc across the continent!” Source
  6. Six movies in, Mission: Impossible has never been more profitable for Paramount. Last year’s Fallout was the franchise’s best outing, both critically and commercially, and naturally, the studio wants to keep the team together. According to Variety, writer and director Christopher McQuarrie has been tapped to return for two more sequels, both of which will be shot back to back and released across two summers, specifically 2021 and 2022. (Read: Tom Cruise’s Top 10 Performances) Once again, Tom Cruise is set to return as IMF agent Ethan Hunt, a role he’s played since the franchise first launched with Brian DePalma’s 1996 original. By Summer 2022, he’ll be 60 years old … and probably still look like he’s 35. Already, McQuarrie is reportedly writing the script, all while Cruise continues to shoot Top Gun: Maverick. While no start date is set, sources tell Variety that Paramount would like to start shooting sometime, gulp, this year. Anything’s possible for the Impossible. 7. Trei has been a mainstay with Viper Recordings since 2013 but it’s been a few years since he released solo tracks with them, preferring to lend his brand of emotive yet hard-hitting DnB to compilations and collabs. Last month he did release some solo jams on Viper, however, in the form of “Fools Rush” and “The Bends.” It doesn’t hurt that he has two more new tracks out on the Viper 2019 Annual: a compilation with Ekko & Sidetrack called “Luddites” and his own solo track called “Out There.” Suffice it to say that for this guest mix he has bestowed upon Your EDM, Trei could have simply laid down his own recent Viper tracks back to back and everyone would have been more than happy. That is not the case however, and in fact this little 20-minute mix includes 15 tracks of varying genres and intensities. He’s covered all the great music that has come out or is coming out this month, including his own tracks but also featuring Insomniax’s banger “Foghorn,” Crissy Criss’s “Shockwave” with Malux and Erb ‘n’ Dub and Rido’s “Blueprint” with Joe Ford. There’s also some fun wild cards like a track from Vowel on Bad Taste, multiple Prototypes tracks and some seemingly random tracks from Dub Elements. It’s a power-packed little mix full of surprises and emotional ups and downs. We won’t say much more other than this mix is a need to listen to hear all the bangers that are out and up in the next month or so. It’s also a lesson in how to put all these seemingly opposed tracks together in a subgenre mashup mix that defies gravity. All of Trei’s newest tracks on Viper and otherwise are available on his Beatport page and clips are available on Soundcloud or full streams on Spotify. Don’t forget to pick up the Viper Annual as well, out now. This article was first published on Your EDM. Source: Your EDM Guest Mix: Trei’s Newest Tracks So Heavy You Might Get ‘The Bends’ Source
  8. Electro veterans The Chemical Brothers have made a triumphant return sharing news of an album and new music that’ll get new and old fans excited! The album ‘No Geography’ is staked for a release later this year and will include two recent singles ">‘Free Yourself’ and ‘MAH’, the later which was premiered by Zane Lowe and features an intense live music video from their recent UK stadium tours. The album is the first new music in three years and will be their ninth studio release, yep ninth! Details are thin at the moment but we’ll be sure to update and share as they land. Source
  9. Netflix has a much anticipated Fyre Festival documentary, FYRE, coming out this Friday. However, competing streaming service Hulu has beaten Netflix to the punch with a documentary of their own, Fyre Fraud. The differences between the two documentaries lies in the people interviewed and the type of content shown. Hulu’s Fyre Fraud features an exclusive interview with Fyre Festival co-founder Billy McFarland, as well as interviews with media figures including Jake Horowitz from MIC, Polly Mosendz from Bloomberg, and Jia Tolentino from The New Yorker. Fyre Fraud directors Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason: FYRE FRAUD is more than the story of a failed music festival in the Bahamas—this dark comedy is a cautionary tale for a generation. Billy McFarland offers us a window into the mind of a con artist, the insidious charm of the fraudster and how they can capture our imaginations, our investment, and our votes in the age of Trump. McFarland’s staggering ambition metastasized in a petri dish of late-stage capitalism, corporate greed, and predatory branding, all weaponized by our fear of missing out. Our aim was to set the stage for a strange journey into the moral abyss of our digital age, going beyond the meme to show an ecosystem of enablers, driven by profit and willing to look the other way, for their own gain. We draw on countless cultural references, on true crime tension, and on humor—but we did not intend to create a toothless comedy about the Fyre Festival. We hope this film can pierce our collective apathy and disrupt our own millennial peers, if only for an instant—to look at these stories for what they truly are, and to halt this algorithm before it devours us whole. The documentary Fyre Fraud is now available on Hulu. Watch the trailer below. This article was first published on Your EDM. 10. For the most part, Jai Wolf took 2018 off. Apart from releasing “Lost” with Chelsea Jade and its accompanying remixes, Jai didn’t tour for all of 2018 and didn’t release any other music. For EDM artists, for whom releasing music consistently is arguably more important than in other genres in order to stay in a DJ’s song rotation, the move could only mean one thing: something bigger was on the horizon. Sure enough, today Jai Wolf announced his debut album, The Cure To Loneliness. From the pre-order, we know that the album will be 12 tracks and will be released on April 5. Along with the album announce, the first two singles from the album were also released today, “Lose My Mind” featuring Mr Gabriel, and “Telepathy.” Considering “Indian Summer” is Jai Wolf’s biggest song ever, most fans will naturally gravitate toward “Telepathy” first. It has those recognizable guitar plucks and dreamy synths with chopped vocals that Jai Wolf fans know and love. It’s sure to be a high point on his upcoming tour – we’ll get to that in a second. But before that, we have to address the other new song “Lose My Mind.” This is the one that a lot of Jai Wolf fans could end up scratching their head at. Right off the bat, it’s clear to hear that this isn’t like any other Jai Wolf track we’ve known thus far. The drums and guitar immediately give the impression of a pop alt track, and as soon as the vocal croons comes in, there’s no doubting it. This is a new style for Jai Wolf, coming off like a combination of Capital Cities and M83. It’s not immediately apparent if this is a one-off on the album or a sign of things to come, but our interest is definitely piqued. “In my heart, this album is me,” professes Jai Wolf. “From the sounds to the lyrics, it’s everything that I’ve always wanted to do. “I like writing songs that have a duality, a complexity of feeling that takes you to a melancholy, reflective space. My music is for people who are desperately dreaming beyond where they are at right now—it can be the future, it can be the past. I want you to feel nostalgic. I want you to reflect on your life. I also want you to be inspired about where your life could go.” “Lose My Mind” also comes with a new music video, which you can watch here. Pre-order The Cure To Loneliness here. The album announcement and new music also comes with a tour announcement. Jai Wolf will be kicking off the tour in April at 9:30 Club in Washington, DC five days after the album drops, and it’ll end at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Tickets will be available to the public on January 18 at jaiwolf.co/TCTLtour. 11. The animated Fox sitcom Family Guy has long relied on making gags out of gay jokes, including a recurring bit targeting the character Stewie’s ambiguous sexuality. Such off-color humor has been the bread and butter of the Seth MacFarlane-created series’ 17-season-and-counting run, after all. However, this past Sunday’s episode revealed that the show would be attempting to “phase out” its use of homophobic humor. Entitled “Trump Guy”, the episode saw the titular family guy himself, Peter Griffin, getting tapped as President Trump’s new press secretary. However, when POTUS sexually assaults Meg, Peter gets into a brawl with the cartoon caricature of the caricature of a human. In their back-and-forth banter, Trump tells Peter, “Many children have learned their favorite Jewish, black, and gay jokes by watching your show over the years.” “In fairness, we’ve been trying to phase out the gay stuff,” Peter retorts. “But you know what? We’re a cartoon. You’re the president.” Executive producers Alec Sulkin and Rich Appel confirmed the move in an interview with TV Line, expressing how they hope to have the series better reflect the present cultural landscape. Sulkin explained, “If you look at a show from 2005 or 2006 and put it side by side with a show from 2018 or 2019, they’re going to have a few differences. Some of the things we felt comfortable saying and joking about back then, we now understand is not acceptable.” Appel added, “If a show has literally been on the air for 20 years, the culture changes. And it’s not us reacting and thinking, ‘They won’t let us [say certain things].’ No, we’ve changed too.” It’s a welcome move for the series, which began airing in 1999. Although, why exactly they need to “phase out” gay jokes rather than just quitting them all at once is unclear. Watch a clip of last night’s Family Guy below: Source

  13. Big news coming from Lightning in a Bottle — the music festival is on the move again! In an official statement on the event’s website, organizers reveal they are locking in a new venue. Plans will be finalized within the next 2-3 weeks. The exact location has yet to be revealed but LIB will still take place in sunny, Central California. This is the 5th time in the history as a festival that LIB has switched up location. Another change to take note of — the music festival will take place two weeks earlier than usual, over May 8th – 13th. That gives LIB a little less time to get everything in order, but it sounds like everything is going according to plan. “We’re optimistic for a great outcome, but we still need the support and trust of you all, our powerful and positive LIB community,” LIB shares. “Please take a moment to help us visualize a beautiful LIB this May. Imagine yourself with your friends, families and lovers, surrounded by music and art, making that LIB magic together. The Earlybird ticket on sale will be in the next few weeks and will coincide with the official location announcement. Be on the lookout for more information as it’s made available Read Lightning in a Bottle’s statement in full here. 14. Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story is coming together. Seventeen-year-old unknown Rachel Zegler has been cast as the pivotal female lead Maria. A New Jersey high school student, Zegler was one of the 30,000 Latinx performers who submitted a video audition last year. “I am so thrilled to be playing the iconic role of Maria alongside this amazing cast,” Zegler says in a press release. “West Side Story was the first musical I encountered with a Latina lead character. As a Colombian-American, I am humbled by the opportunity to play a role that means so much to the Hispanic community.” Zegler has a YouTube channel featuring several performance videos, including one of her starring in a past production of West Side Story. (Read: Ranking Every Steven Spielberg Movie from Worst to Best) Zegler will star opposite Baby Driver Ansel Elgort, who was cast three months ago as Tony. Also joining them are David Alvarez as Maria’s brother Bernardo, Ariana DeBose as Anita, and Josh Andres Rivera as Chino. In the same press release, Spielberg offered his thoughts on the casting: “When we began this process a year ago, we announced that we would cast the roles of Maria, Anita, Bernardo, Chino and the Sharks with Latina and Latino actors. I’m so happy that we’ve assembled a cast that reflects the astonishing depth of talent in America’s multifaceted Hispanic community. I am in awe of the sheer force of the talent of these young performers, and I believe they’ll bring a new and electrifying energy to a magnificent musical that’s more relevant than ever.” As previously reported, Rita Moreno, who won an Oscar for her turn as Anita in the 1959 original, will also star in the remake. This time around, however, she’ll be a “re-conceived and expanded version” of corner store owner Doc. 15. With so many media sources in today’s world, it’s hard to not let something slip through every once in a while, even if it’s a big news piece, like, say… Flume working with the Gorillaz??? The smoking gun was dug up again by @Electric_Hawk on Twitter, referencing an interview that Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn did with Zane Lowe on Beats 1 in 2018. All it took was one sentence: “I’ve been working with Flume.” And we’re hyped as hell. Flume took a break in 2018, but it seems that he’s coming back full-force this year with new music and collaborations. 16. Kanye West has been in a charitable mood of late. He recently donated $500,000 to California wildfire relief and $150,000 to the family of Jemel Roberson, the Chicago security guard mistakenly killed by police late last year. He’s also contributed upwards of $200,000 to the campaign of Chicago mayoral candidate Amara Enyia. Now, via the Wall Street Journal, comes word that Kanye has donated $10 million to the Turrell Art Foundation. The donation will assist James Turrell in his efforts to transform the inner cone of the Roden Crater in Flagstaff, AZ into a massive naked-eye observatory. A website for the Roden Crater provides further details: “Since acquiring the dormant cinder cone in 1977, Turrell has fashioned Roden Crater into a site containing tunnels and apertures that open onto pristine skies, capturing light directly from the sun in daylight hours, and the planets and stars at night. Indeed it is more akin to the communally developed sites of ancient Incas, than to the conceptions of any individual one can think of in modern times.” In a statement to the Wall Street Journal, West said that he wants the Roden Crater to be “experienced and enjoyed for eternity.” Kanye himself visited the crater back in December and described the experience as “life changing.” Went to visit the James Turrell crater two days ago. This is life changing. We all will live in Turrell spaces — ye (@kanyewest) December 13, 2018 Source

According to multiple reports, the unpaid workers have been playing uncensored material from Travis Scott, Kanye West, Ludacris, and more throughout the entire airport. Just imagine the dirty version of “Sicko Mode” playing as you get checked through by security. Pretty bad ass, right? “JFK Airport blasting Ludacris at 5:45 am is a vibe,” one person shared on Twitter. Jay-Z and Paramore were also among the music selections, so it’s safe to say TSA has great taste. 22. Well, I guess this is throwing up: A couple of ambitious students from UCLA went ahead and created a vegan Dude Ranch salad dressing in honor of Blink-182’s break-though sophomore album. Co-founder Megan Hullander, a third-year English student, tells The Daily Bruin that she’s not vegan herself, but has the environment in mind with the dressing. “We tried to make it as Earth-friendly as possible and as healthy as we possibly could, and get all the ingredients while still maintaining the taste,” Hullander explains. “We started out making recipes that we found, and then just replaced ingredients to use ones that were either more sustainable, or added things we thought would be good for flavor.” (Read: The Highs and Lows of Blink-182) Nothing’s been lost in translation, either, as co-founder Angela Simmons insists, “It’s pretty packed with flavor but it’s not overwhelming. So it’s a really good balance between this crazy flavor, (but) you can enjoy carrots, or pita bread, or whatever you want to put your ranch on, and it doesn’t take away from the flavor of the food.” Admirable, no doubt. Ambitious, too. Even so, one can’t help but groan a little at the prospect of using Dude Ranch salad dressing, especially when you consider all the times the band has referred to their dick in songs, on stage, and in music videos. Perhaps they would have been better off with “Apple Shampoo”? Nevertheless, the brand will stay together for the kids and debut on January 17th at a Westwood apartment. Follow the company via Instagram and revisit the titular album below. Source
  23. In the day and age of numerous ‘Lil’ something rappers and Soundcloud-emerging new artists, it is hard to stay relevant, not to say, influential for more than a year. Everyone sounds the same, everyone does the same, and the quality of the music keeps decreasing. However, some of the artists and rappers managed to establish their names as indispensable in the music industry, just like Frank Ocean did. The fact is, Frank Ocean is nothing like your typical musician; he lives a quiet life, does few performances now and then, and comes from the shadows only when he presents new music, and even then, not entirely. Nevertheless, his music has managed to not only stay relevant but also to influence the whole genre, the future development of hip-hop and music as a whole, as well as to stay on top of the charts even years after releasing an album or a song. photo credit Frank Ocean So, what is Frank Ocean’s secret? How and why is he still one of the most influential names in the music and hip-hop industry? Before we look into the answers to these questions, make sure to look for help on Samples-Edusson, for some exceptional writing services. Minimalism The common themes in Frank Ocean’s discography are time and minimalism. When I say time, I mean the time he puts into creating an album. It took him four years to release Blonde after his debut album. However, both records, Blonde and Endless, had minimalism in common, as a prevailing aspect of their success. The albums, music videos, and even the promotions were wrapped in the veil of mystery, showing only bits and pieces on several platforms, like Apple Music streams, or Ocean’s own website. Many believe that such an approach to music, not only promotion might be one of the reasons Frank Ocean is still an influential artist, and always expected to release some new work. The time he takes to create music is essential to its quality in all fairness, but the minimalism of his presentation in the public eye and media is what keeps people wanting more. In the world when everything is available and approachable, Frank Ocean seems untouchable, obscure and endlessly mysterious. Music speaks for itself As mentioned in the previous paragraphs, Frank Ocean promotes his music quite scarcely. The success of his albums is, therefore, purely based on the experience of the listeners, according to The Concordian. So, by not being active on social media, or doing any interviews and public performances, Ocean merely is allowing his music to speak for itself. He doesn’t share any information or additional explanations of the album or the songs that might affect the opinion or the experience of his fans and the new audience. All Ocean does is release an album. The rest depends on how the audience receives it, and it usually receives his records with open hands, and ears. Vulnerability Frank Ocean is an open book when it comes to expressing his emotions and own contemplative nature. Even though he is ‘quiet,’ his music and lyrics resonate so much with his audience, probably because of his ability to be vulnerable without being weak. Blonde, for example, is deeply intimate, personal and far from being romantic, even though there is romance involved, but also strong and direct. It seems that Frank Ocean’s vulnerability is fairly calculated and done in such a way as if we, the listeners, have an insight into his personal journal. He also seems to be straightforward and unhinged in expressing his emotions, thoughts, quiet frustrations or loud opinions. And most importantly, Ocean invites everyone to this ‘party’; not only other people, as in the listeners and global audience, but also different genres, to enjoy a temporary moment of his vulnerability in each of the songs. But, however fleeting those moments are, Ocean doesn’t pull away from their truthfulness and genuineness at any time. And that seems to be the X-factor of his music, success, and ongoing relevancy. Independence After being let down by his first major label, and making his first $1 million with Def Jam, Frank Ocean decided to focus on creating music entirely independently. According to DJBooth, in his 2012 GQ interview, Ocean explained that he is holding the creative control of the record he wants to make, and that is how things are going to go for him; as independently as possible. By establishing his independence as an artist, Frank has managed to use his artistic freedom fully and openly, the way he wants with no outside opinions and critiques. When an artist has such ability and power, of course, their music is going to take time, effort and passion because they create everything alone. Not to mention the quality levels increase automatically, and people know how to recognize unique, autonomous artists and voices in the music industry. That might be yet another reason why Ocean remains relevant and influential even years after his albums drop, or without showing up in public. And when an artist stays relevant only because of their work, without making public stunts and drama, then you know you’re in for a quality treat with their records. 24. A benefit concert for the the victims of the recent Woolsey wildfire took place at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium on Sunday night. Fittingly, the Malibu Love Sesh featured a bill of artists who, at one point or another, have called California home. St. Vincent was among the evening’s performers and she used her acoustic set to pay tribute to both the Golden State and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who were headlining the event. The Masseduction indie rocker also known as Annie Clark surprised the audience by pulling out a cover of the Peppers’ 1992 song “Breaking the Girl”. She also gave a shout-out to the band’s guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, who apparently helped her work out the cover backstage. (Read: The Top 50 Songs of 2018) “I wanna give a very special thank you to Josh Klinghoffer,” she said towards the end of her cover, as Rolling Stone points out, “for fucking bitching guitar playing, but also for correcting my chords just about 20 minutes ago.” Replay St. Vincent’s RHCP cover below. Recently, it was revealed that St. Vincent would be producing the new album from Sleater-Kinney. In the last few months, St. Vincent has also covered Lou Reed and Blondie (the latter with star power assistance from Dave Grohl and Beck). Source
