  1. In 2017, Fleet Foxes returned with their first album in six years, Crack-Up. It seems fans won’t have to wait nearly as long to hear their follow-up album. On New Year’s Eve, frontman Robin Pecknold previewed some of the band’s new music via a series of audio snippets posted to Instagram. “Forward ! (Very very demos happy new year),” reads an accompanying caption. Take a listen below (note: click the next button in the right of the post to hear further snippets). Pecknold has given no timetable for the new album’s release, but previously said it would be out “within 24 months of LP3 according to contract.” In the meantime, revisit our Fleet Foxes’ performance of “Crack-Up” with the all-female Icelandic choir Graduale Nobili: Source
  2. Though he’s most famous for being Chance the Rapper, Chancelor Bennett has added many others titles over the years. He’s Chance the Actor, Chance the Reality Show Judge, Chance the Philanthropist, Chance the Journalist, and Chance the Lyft Driver. Now, you can also refer to him as Chance the Hero. In a round-up of notable moments from 2018, Chance revealed that he pulled a man from a burning car. “Ay so I never told this to the world but my friends can merch. I saved a persons by myself on Easter Sunday this year omw to church.” As he goes on to tell it, “Basically I was driving to church dolo, about to go south on lakeshore [drive] and another car drives into the wall in front of me goin like 90 mph comin off the exit,” he wrote. “I was the only person out there when it first happened and his car was on fire so I had to break his window take off his seatbelt let his seat back and pull a whole grown man out the car unconscious.” Chance initially said he was unsure of the victim’s fate, but after sharing the story on Instagram, Chance was contacted by the man’s nephew. “A kid DM’d me saying it was his uncle and that he lived!! 3. Mike Tyson is getting into the music festival game. The former heavyweight boxer turned mega celebrity has announced Kind Music Festival (KMF), which is set to take place at his very own Tyson ranch in SoCal. KMF “embraces cannabis as a legalized recreational product,” according the the official site. “Kind Music Festival will be a one-day ‘pop-up’ micro-festival event at the future site of the Tyson ranch resort, a 412-acre entertainment complex, luxury glamping resort, and cannabis research & design facility in Desert Hot Springs.” Saluting California’s stance on cannibas, KMF will allow on site use of the substance. “However, there will be no sales or giveaways of cannabis products at the festival.” This is something organizers hope to offer in the future. The new pop up festival experience will focus on music, food trucks, and fun for all ages. Inflatable rides, obstacle courses, and mazes will make the kids happy. A bar zone, vendors, and limited merch will keep the adults entertained as well. It’s unknown at this point who will perform at the event on Feburary 23rd. Tickets are on sale here. 4. Ryders, get ready! JOYRYDE is revving up for a new year with new music and his newest ID sounds massive! In the video clip below, JOYRYDE plays out an unreleased track that rocks his signature style with a 2019 twist. Coming off a relatively low profile year, fans are ready for the release of his debut album. Brave was set to release in late November, but it was pushed back due to “technical reasons.” His massive collaboration with Skrillex, “AGEN WIDA” is the only release thus far — but it’s a great indicator of what’s to come. As is this clip below, which the producer just shared today. Calling this a banger would be putting it lightly. Get ready for more in 2019. This is the year of JOYRYDE! 5. RL Grime is reflecting on 2018 with a list of his favorite things. Of course, we’re particularly interested in his favorite songs from the year. In the post below, he shares selects from Drake, Uniiqu3, DJ Koze, Travis Scott, Kids See Ghosts, Pusha T, and more. Keeping it modest, the DJ/producer doesn’t include any of his own songs off NOVA. RL Grime also shares his favorite movies, tv shows and app (spoiler: it’s Postmates for the 3rd year running). Plus, he goes off on a more random note, revealing his favorite drink, garnish and spice. As one of the greatest tastemakers out there, especially when it comes to electronic music, it’s awesome to see where RL Grime’s head is at. Explore some of RL Grime’s favorite things below — but don’t get too hung up on 2018. It’s a new year, about to be full of new favorites and firsts for everyone. 6. Louis C.K. may have forgotten how to be funny, but the same cannot be said for Pete Davidson. Though the SNL comedian has had a harrowing last few months, he seems to have made it out on the other side and is back to making people laugh. According to E! News, Davidson did a New Year’s Eve standup set in Boston, where he cracked jokes about his breakup from Ariana Grande and other recent current events. He also threw some shade in the direction of fellow comedian Louis C.K., who recently gave a controversial standup set in which he mocked survivors of the Parkland school shooting and gender-neutral pronouns. Regarding Louis C.K., Davidson hit him with the following joke: “I got a Harry Potter tattoo. Then the next day Alan Rickman, the guy who played Snape, died, and I was like, ‘Oh, what a weird coincidence.’ Then I got a Willy Wonka tattoo. Next day—Gene Wilder dies. Now I’m like, ‘Alright, that’s a coincidence, that’s weird.’ So I’m thinking of getting a tattoo of Louis C.K., what do you guys think?” Davidson also revealed that Louis C.K. had attempted to get him fired from SNL. “He told [SNL creator] Lorne [Michaels] that Pete smokes so much weed that it makes people uncomfortable.” Of course, Davidson would get the last laugh, “Then five years later this motherfucker’s been locking doors and jerking off in front of people.” On the topic of Grande, Davidson reminisced about the awkwardness of having to perform on Saturday Night Live hours after Grande released her breakup anthem, “thank u, next”. “That shit came out before I had to put on a fucking duck hat and be like, ‘derrrp here’s the pizza!'” Davidson remarked. 7. Noname is just months removed from releasing Room 25, one of our favorite albums of 2018. Now, as she gears up to embark on a supporting US tour, the Chicago product has unveiled a new standalone single called “Song 31”. Maintaining a similar aesthetic to Room 25, it’s a soulful, jazz-infused offering that intersperses playful references to Atlanta and Kelsey Grammar with more harrowing topics like cancer and America’s criminal justice system. 8. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ library of cinematic sounds gets another entry today, as the Oscar-winning composing duo have unveiled their original score for Netflix’s widely popular horror film, Bird Box. An “abridged” 10-track version of the score, with a run time of 66 minutes, is available to purchase in high-resolution audio via Nine Inch Nails’ website. It will be made available on streaming services by January 25th. Additionally, “a more expansive (read: more self-indulgent) physical-only offering… that will contain an additional hour of music and artwork that colors further outside the lines” will be released in the spring. “Like all soundtrack records we release, we aim for these to play like albums that take you on a journey and can exist as companion pieces to the film and as their own separate works,” Reznor and Ross say of their latest score. We’ve created a significant amount of music and conceptual sound for Bird Box, a lot of which never made it to your ears in the final version of the film. We’ve decided to present you with this version of the soundtrack record that represents what Bird Box is to us. We hope you enjoy.” Below, listen to the score’s opening track, “Outside”. The beloved New York City venue will apparently reopen in 2019, completely with a new logo – and new management. 11. 2018 has officially come to an end! Take a look back on the final month of the year with our monthly playlist. Artist discoveries: Bop English, Camp Cope, Mungion Our two top picks of the month: 1. Future Me Hates Me – The Beths The Beths released one of the top indie albums of 2018 with “Future Me Hates Me” leading the way for the record’s success. Its catchy rhythm and emphasized lyrics captivate listeners and intrigue them to hear more. Don’t sleep on The Beths, they’re one of indie rock’s best outfits. 2. What’s It All For? – Yellow Days Yellow Days returned with two singles, including the echoey “What’s It All For?” Yellow Days is no stranger to using eerie sounds to his advantage and express his emotions, and he hit it out of the park on this new song. It’s trippy vibe and questioning lyrics are a good combination that provoke thought within the listener. This single builds anticipation for Yellow Days’ next album…whenever that comes. 12. Madonna rang in 2009 with a surprise appearance at Stonewall Inn, the iconic LGBTQ venue in Greenwich Village, New York. The Queen of Pop was recently named an ambassador of Stonewall and her New Year’s appearance kicked off a series of events commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. In a short speech, Madonna reflected on the anniversary of the gay liberation movement, saying: “I stand here proudly at the place where pride began, the legendary Stonewall Inn, on the birth of a new year. We come together tonight to celebrate 50 years of revolution, 50 years of freedom fighting, 50 years of blood, sweat, and tears. 50 years of sacrifice, 50 years of standing up to discrimination, hatred, and indifference. Let us never forget the Stonewall riots and those who bravely stood up and said enough.” At the conclusion of her remarks, she led the crowd in singing Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love” as well as her own seminal hit “Like A Prayer”. 13. We’ve seen a teaser, we’ve seen the episode titles, hell, we’ve even seen bits and pieces of the accompanying video game, but we had yet to actually know when we might actually see Stranger Things 3. Now that it’s officially 2019, Netflix has dropped a date for its popular sci-fi series. Write it down: The third season will officially premiere on July 4th, 2019. The news follows hours of holiday teasing, from both the show’s Twitter account and a creepy viral video that played in New York City’s Times Square throughout the afternoon. Live from WIYZ, it's a Hawkins New Year's Eve! https://t.co/GhaGjVyNse — Stranger Things (@Stranger_Things) January 1, 2019 As previously reported, the third season will introduce new characters like Cary Elwes’ corrupt Mayor Kline, Jake Busey’s sleazy reporter Bruce, and Maya Hawke’s alt-girl Rose, who works with Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) at the Starcourt Mall, which factors heavily into the storyline. “While it’s our most fun season, it also turns out to be our grossest season,” co-creator Ross Duffer teases in new book, Stranger Things: Worlds Turned Upside Down. “We’re inspired by John Carpenter’s The Thing. We’re inspired by Cronenberg. We have a little bit of a George Romero vibe in there as well. There are horror movies and horror masters that we haven’t really paid tribute to as much in previous seasons that we are definitely going to get into this season.” JULY 4 pic.twitter.com/UX9M1L02rd — Stranger Things (@Stranger_Things) January 1, 2019 Yet classic horror isn’t the season’s only inspiration. “The Duffers are so specific each year with the movies,” David Harbour, aka Sheriff Hopper, explained back in August “And Fletch is one movie we get to play around and have some fun with this season, which you wouldn’t expect from Stranger Things and you wouldn’t expect from the Spielberg universe and you certainly wouldn’t expect from a darker season.” Light, dark, scary, or funny, we’re more than ready. 14. In the U.S., it’s pretty tough to find a place to celebrate New Year’s Eve if you want to be surrounded by nothing but DnB and its heads. Luckily, that is not the case in Los Angeles thanks to Xcellerated and Killahurtz. With lots of massive multi-genre parties to choose from, it’s nice to know that many of us can ring in 2019 with exactly what we love the most: drum and bass. Not only will tonight’s show have mega love from the LA scene as the city’s resident ogs RAW, APX-1, Scooba, Construct, Seebass, Habit and Zere will be representing, but literally two of the most popular international DnB acts will be there for the countdown as well: Hybrid Minds and Original Sin. This means lots of high-quality bass and liquid love will be embracing the whole crew as the balls drops, with melodies and beats loved the whole world over inside the vibe while hosts MC Question Mark, Jtec and Werd bring it all home. This massive DnB New Year love fest kicks off at 9pm and goes all the way until 4am at Catch One (formerly Union) on Pico in the city of angels. This event is 18+ as well. Online tickets can still be purchased right up until doors open and all other information is available on the Facebook event page. If you’re a DnB head and want to ring in 2019 right the rest of the heads will see you there! Happy New Year to all DnB crew and EDM fam! This article was first published on Your EDM. 15. Yesterday Amen Dunes publicly opened up about his history of sexual abuse. The thing is, he didn’t want to. He was forced to. A couple days ago, journalist Jessica Hopper decided to dig up a 2014 interview that Amen Dunes did with No Fear Of Pop. In the interview Dunes was asked whether or not he could see himself collaborating with women in the future, he said, at the time, that it was “not [his] vibe,” and “I just don’t think chemically it’ll work.” The full exchange is as follows: Interviewer: “Do you think you could ever see yourself doing a riskier album than Spoiler, like do a collaboration album with a female artist you like, or like a favorite contemporary female artist?” Amen: “To be honest, I don’t think my energy would work with that. I mean, I love women, and I have plenty of female friends, but I don’t think my energy would work with a woman. I don’t know, I can’t imagine it, actually. It’s just not my vibe, and I don’t mean that in any kind of disparaging or critical way; I just don’t think chemically it’ll work.” Hopper tweeted out the 2014 quote, expressing her rage and implying Dunes is sexist and misogynistic. I’d love to show you her original tweet but I can’t because she has, rightfully, since deleted it and the completely cancerous “thread” it caused. But, nonetheless, immediately after hitting post the Twitter warriors sprang into action, assuming they had just found their latest cancellation. No Collabs He Man Women Haters Club For Men — bunnybrains (@bunnybrains) December 28, 2018 Uh, who the hell is this pube-headed creep? — Narlus (@warkmagner) December 28, 2018 He sounds like someone who has never met an actual woman. Does he like, know that we are just people? — Whitney Ayres Kenerly (@WKenerly) December 29, 2018 Well to automatically say you’re not going to work with half the population is suspect. And he’s acting like all women are the same. It’s gross and sexist. — Kat Harding (@iwearaviators) December 29, 2018 Fuck. That. To just write off all female artists on the basis of gender because you can’t see the world beyond binaries is, indeed, pretty primitive and, really just sad and pathetic. — weird animal (@shadowtoashes) December 29, 2018 Other musicians attempted to pile on. Not a good look here https://t.co/asB5R8SM5L — william tyler (@williamtylertn) December 28, 2018 And other journalists wanted to get in on the fun. This sentiment sucks. When I interviewed him about Freedom we talked a lot about masculinity. I feel like what he said to me might suggest he’d grown from when he said this but I don’t know. https://t.co/zqh9Kqwltw — Jason P. Woodbury (@jasonpwoodbury) December 29, 2018 There aren’t many degrading tweets left now that Dunes shared his side of the story. The vast majority of which were deleted and only a few of Twitter’s best and brightest minds have still left their Amen insults up for the world to see, with many backtracking and apologizing or attempting to justify their previous statements. I’m sorry for the pile-on and for what you experienced, and for having to share it on these terms. — Laura Snapes (@laurasnapes) December 30, 2018 thanks for sharing this Damon- I am never one to judge and I am there for anyone in pain- the words you used just hit me and many close to me as being hurtful in their own way- my best and thank you for your music — william tyler (@williamtylertn) December 30, 2018 Thank you for sharing your experience and for recognizing that without context, the meaning was greatly skewed. I hope you have found the healing you have sought through music. — elise tyler (@snackelise) December 30, 2018 I understand where you’re coming from. Without the clarity of context, everyone, including myself, make assumptions on the information available. I am sorry that happened to you and for my initial reaction. To me, it makes more sense now. I hope you find peace. Samuel. — Samuel Escher (@ThePoetSamuel) December 30, 2018 @amendunes Your a brave man. I also apologize for being to quick on the Twitter train. Something tells me if you and Jess ever met this could be the start of something good and healing. Peace to your heart. — Nate the Guitarman (@GODDOGKILLA77) December 31, 2018 Amen went as far as to directly tweet at those who were calling him out. I do, and thank you for this. As a survivor myself I understand & have a lot of solidarity for you. I’m glad you’re at a stage in yr healing process now where you’re able to reflect on such things with clarity and openness. — jes skolnik (@modernistwitch) December 30, 2018 Jess Hopper, the journalist that started it all, has made a few apologetic tweets since the incident and has rid her account of anything accusatory. Understand all of that completely, and hope that music continues to be a space where you can heal and process. Tweets deleted, and my apologies if they further dredged up trauma. — Jessica Hopper (@jesshopp) December 30, 2018 I understand entirely how it feels to have to go public about sexual assault under circumstances you didn't ask for on a timeline that is not your own and wouldn't wish it on anyone. I am sorry that I was responsible for lofting that unearthed quote and the pain it caused Damon. https://t.co/4UfNLvJPhb — Jessica Hopper (@jesshopp) December 31, 2018 Then Twitter did what it does best and users started attacking Hopper. but will you learn anything from this situation? i doubt it, on to the next attempt to ruin/destroy someone. — fred (@Fray_dee) December 31, 2018 awesome when people go searching for intolerance and find only a mirror… then delete tweets, fix narrative, act like they’ve done good! — Eric Pillwein (@pillweiny) December 31, 2018 Are you gonna apologize after he explained his side? Or do you have to much pride for that — big ugly man (@spookiougi) December 30, 2018 Pitchfork wasn’t spared either after covering the story and excluding the fact that Hopper is a contributor to the site. His remarks didn’t “[cause] controversy.” @jesshopp, your contributor, did. If you’re not gonna cover this honestly, then why bother even covering it? — 03 Goodo (@realElGoodo) December 31, 2018 Bringing this whole debacle full circle. What’s to learn from all of this? Honestly, that’s for you to decide. Tilt Chamberlain, the bassist for The War On Drugs, shared his thoughts (on Twitter of course). This is a good lesson in the dangers of Twitter’s judge-jury-executioner justice.. — Tilt Chamberlain (@Nightlands) December 30, 2018 And I think he’s right, this is a really good lesson in how social media’s cancel culture and rage posting can backfire, create false storylines, or wrongfully accuse. Hopper isn’t to blame here, neither are the users who quickly tweeted out their disgust for Dunes upon initially seeing his 4-year-old quote, it’s the culture that is at fault. Twitter encourages users to respond in an instant and users know that if they don’t share their thoughts immediately that they will be buried under hundreds of other replies, forcing them to react in an instant if they want to stay relevant. Sure, you can blame the users and say they don’t need to constantly strive to attain relevancy but the platform also supplies the idea that any given opinion actually matters and that your follower count is emblematic of your importance. That notion, simply put, is just not true, yet we still abide by it. That’s why we need to talk about Amen Dunes. And a larger conversation needs to be had about where this is all heading and how we can fix these issues. Tearing down another person’s life on social media shouldn’t be a regular thing that we all participate in and then praise ourselves for after. On the other hand, Twitter is quickly establishing this “Boy Who Cried Wolf” sentiment as there are countless other cases of similar instances and I fear the day that we immediately start sympathizing with the “wolf.” I don’t have all the answers, honestly, I don’t have any. My solution is to simply not go off and accuse or defend people who I don’t even know on social media — you can do the same if you’d like. Oh, also, I archived this page in case any of the above tweets have since been deleted. This article was originally posted on Peanut Butter & Good Jams. 16. Though the last week has seen Kevin Spacey resurface for the first time since his self-inflicted retirement in 2017, the disgraced actor had been attempting to avoid an in-person court appearance when he is formally arraigned on charges of felony sexual assault next week. Unfortunately for Spacey, those efforts haven been denied. Judge Thomas Barrett ordered Spacey to appear in a Nantucket, Massachusetts District Court on January 7th, according to Variety. The judge’s decision was revealed in an affidavit in which Spacey also entered a plea of not guilty. In the affidavit, which was obtained by the Boston Globe, Spacey requested that “this court excuse my physical presence at the arraignment as I reside out-of-state and believe that my presence will amplify the negative publicity already generated in connection with this case.” (Read: Louis CK, Kevin Spacey, and the No Apology Tour: How Ignorance is Bliss in Trump’s America) As previously reported, Spacey will be arraigned on a charge of indecent assault and battery related to a 2016 incident. The alleged incident took place at a Nantucket bar in July 2016 and involved the 18-year-old son of former Boston WCVB-TV news anchor Heather Unruh. If convicted, Spacey could serve up to five years in prison and could also be required to register as a sex offender. In a bizarre video posted to Twitter on Christmas Eve, Spacey seemingly acknowledged the incident and promised he would be vindicated… all while appearing in character as Frank Underwood from House of Cards. Yesterday, he came out of hiding in Baltimore to deliver pizza to members of the paparazzi. Source

  20. When Donald Trump was elected president “way, way back” in November 2016, at least half of America had to pick their jaws off the ground. Some were in a daze, some were enraged, some resorted to cannibalism. (Just kidding. I hope.) One of the more vivid reactions was that of news commentator Van Jones, who infamously called the election a white-lash, asking his befuddled CNN co-hosts, “How do I explain this to my children?” He wasn’t wrong, and still isn’t, but it’s clear now that our children are hardly the only thing to be concerned about in the age of Trump. Between the bigoted tragedies in Charlottesville and Mueller’s ensuing investigation, the better question might have been, “How do I explain this to the rest of the country?” Truth be told, you can’t. If Trump has succeeded at doing anything in his position — and recent reports suggest he’s delivered nothing but chaos to the White House — it’s that his sociopathic tendencies have empowered an entire country to be similarly ignorant and reckless. It’s the type of old-school mob mentality of “no apologies needed, no fucks given” that can only come from someone with overwhelming power and privilege. The problem is that this isn’t relegated to a single political party; it’s one of the many luxuries of being an American celebrity. And that’s a major issue when we’re a country that worships celebrities, treating them like new deities, so untouchable they’re almost a figment of our imaginations. That’s why the Weinstein aftermath started off so reassuring. Celebrities who were outed by their victims — the list is sadly ongoing — often dealt with the consequences, be it the law such as Weinstein and Cosby, or the shame in knowing their careers are over. “We did it!” “Let’s drink to that!” “Yippie ki-yay, motherfucker.” Except, not really. Literally dozens of women had to be dragged through the mill of public scorn just so two old rapists could go to jail (with one still awaiting trial), while we’re all now learning that shame only lasts so long for celebrities. Because like Jason Voorhees, the power of a celebrity never dies, no matter the crime, and while an agent’s old adage used to be “just give it time”, the new motto is: “Eh, who gives a shit?” Sia and Donald Trump on SNL, presumably right before The Dump Trump proved that before he was even president — and with full transparency — proudly declaring that he “could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody” and not lose a single vote. That comment sure as hell didn’t diminish his power, and neither has any other one of his actions, even when there’s a growing pile of evidence suggesting he’s the world’s sleaziest and most corrupt scumbag. He doesn’t care, because he knows he doesn’t have to, and that his lack of decency has not only informed his base, but has since crossed over into the broader world of celebrity. “Hey, all bets are off. The curtain’s been burned, but guess what? We never really needed the smoke and mirrors! We just needed to entertain them!” The proof isn’t just in the pudding, it’s in the entire line of Snack Packs. Look at this past month alone. You have Kevin Hart shrugging off his homophobic remarks like they don’t matter, snubbing the Oscars by refusing to apologize, knowing damn well it won’t affect the box office receipts for the next Jumanji film. There’s Kevin Spacey, embracing the hubristic villainy of his own Frank Underwood and delivering pizzas to paparazzi with smug baseball caps that poke fun at his accusations of grooming and sexual assault. And of course, who will ever forget Louis CK’s hilarious stand-up shows, where he’s not only biting his thumb at PC culture, but now throwing school shooting survivors under the proverbial school bus? Sadly, a lot of people will, and judging from the online vitriol on both sides of the coin, there are many who couldn’t give less of a shit, and that’s the reality we have to finally face in this country. Kevin Spacey gives pizza to paparazzi “Finally.” Most already have, and if they haven’t, it’s likely because they’re still clinging onto the hope that things will change, that celebrities, or those in power, will be held accountable for their actions. To their credit, there have been some demonstrative wins this year — see: Cosby — but they’re minor in the ensuing tidal wave of support that keeps coming from a general public that’s freely willing to laugh with them, share and favorite their tweets, buy their overpriced tickets, and cast another deadly vote. When you have that kind of support, there’s absolutely zero need for an Apology Tour, especially when the alternative is to manually delete yourself with no hope of absolution. Celebrities will never do that, which is why they’ll continue to live with minimal checks and balances as we continue to slam our fists online and say it’s awful. “My life is over, I don’t give a shit,” CK said at his most recent stand-up show, later admitting that he spent some time in France because he felt he needed to leave the nation in the aftermath of last year’s sexual assault allegations. This is just more unnecessary smoke and mirrors, and CK knows this, which is why he ultimately doesn’t give a shit, and neither does Spacey, who’s similarly wearing his shame like a badge of honor. Laugh, scoff, or pout all you want, but these ignorant shrug-offs say everything you need to know about power and celebrity — and not just now, but as it’s always been. For those who’ve been on top, if there’s a way, there’s a will, and there are plenty of ways to will yourself afloat in Trump’s America. Whether that changes remains to be seen, but do yourself a favor and don’t hold your breath. Instead, just get ready for another year of it. Source
  21. Black Sabbath played their final show in February 2017, leaving a legendary Rock & Roll Hall of Fame career in their wake. But even iconic acts have some bumps in the road, one of them being 1995’s Forbidden album. Now, guitarist Tony Iommi is hoping to give the disc the sound he feels it deserves. Forbidden featured a lineup of Iommi, singer Tony Martin, bassist Neil Murray, drummer Cozy Powell, and keyboardist Geoff Nicholls. It would mark the band’s last album before their 2013 disc, 13, which was recorded by Iommi and fellow founding members Ozzy Osbourne and Geezer Butler, along with Rage Against the Machine drummer Brad Wilk. Upon its release in 1995, Forbidden was lambasted by critics and fans alike for its poor production. The original album was produced by Body Count guitarist Ernie C, and even featured Ice-T on the opening track “The Illusion of Power”. In a Facebook video to fans posted on Saturday (as transcribed by Ultimate Guitar), Iommi acknowledged the criticism. “Hello everybody. It’s that time of year again, it’s all happening,” began Iommi in the video. “It’s Christmas. We’ve had great Christmas here and I hope you have too. It’s been good fun. And it’s been a great year as well, I’ve enjoyed being at home and doing other things, as well as music.” He continued, “Next year there will be the Forbidden album coming out, which we’re remixing at the moment, Mike Exeter and myself. And that’s been interesting too, pulling that apart and at least try and get some better sounds on it. As it should be. I know Cozy [Powell] was never happy with his drum sound, and none of us were really happy with the sound on that album. So, hopefully, now it will be sounding better.” In addition to working on a new mix for Forbidden, Iommi revealed this past summer that he was working on material for a new solo album, also with engineer Mike Exeter. 22. I think it’s fair to say that for fans of EDM, 2018 has felt like a giant roller coaster ride. Constantly going up and down, side to side – and not just when listening to Fisher. As a community we suffered huge losses, discovered some incredible new music, and saw old friends reunite. Artists responded by opening up about their own battles with addiction and took private responsibility for public mistakes. And then there was this shit. I wish I could say that there was enough good that happened in 2018 to offset the losses we’ve felt and the overabundance of Cheeto dust in the air, but the truth is I can’t wait to say, “New Year. Who dis?” Thankfully, not everyone is quite as ready as I am to ghost an entire year. In the spirit of NYE, I reached out to a few artists on the Minimal Effort NYE lineup ahead of the festival to try and get in the celebratory mood by finding out the kinds of things they are going to be toasting to when the ball drops. With the help of Minimal Effort’s team, I was able to reach out to a bunch of them all at once and ask: What was the craziest/best part of 2018? 2. What was the hardest/biggest growth you experienced? 3. Any personal/professional goal you have for yourself for 2019? Any hopes for your fans. The replies I got were pretty fantastic and made me feel a little better about the year we are all leaving in the glittered dust. Will Clarke “So many amazing moments this year but the one that stands out to me the most was playing CRSSD festival this fall. The crowd was insane with people climbing on the staging and going mental. I’m still 5’3″ so [saying the biggest growth] is pretty tough. [Goals for 2019 involve] My new label launching, potentially an album and also a new live show alias called AMOK.” Option 4 “[The] craziest part of 2018 was seeing people care about my music again. I got to go on tour with Worthy for what was supposed to be like 6 shows and it turned into 25. I was gone for like 6 months! We had such a good time at all the shows and they just kept getting crazier and crazier as the tour pushed on. I had played shows with friends before but to play shows [with] the same bud over and over again every weekend was really special. Sean turned into a brother for me and that relationship is something I’ll always cherish. The hardest part for 2018 for me was just trying to balance everything. I can’t support myself with JUST my music so I still work 2 full-time jobs to pay the bills… I feel like that’s a struggle for a lot of touring artists just starting out. I wasn’t having enough time to work on music anymore [because] I usually work in the studio on weekends. Since I was gone so much, we finally just had to take a break and not accept anymore gigs for the year or else I was gonna lose my mind. VERY excited to hit the road again next year tho! My main goal for 2019 is to do cool shit with my record label. We have all kinds of parties and super innovative ideas to explore for next year. Not to mention building a roster that is out of control big. The only other thing that I’m super excited about is finishing my album! I’ve taken 5 months off touring to work on it and I am HOPING for a Q2 [April to June] release next year. Gonna be SO fun to show people all the different sides of option4 :)” Layton Giordani “I’d have to say 2018 was absolutely insane all around but if I had to add a highlight moment it would have to be playing the Legendary Gashouder. This was on my bucket list for a long time and to be able to play it this one was life-changing. [Playing at] the techno temple [in Berghain, Berlin] and this [playing the Legendary Gashouder] is a moment I’ll cherish forever. [Another highlight was] moving to Europe officially. I always traveled back and forth from New York to Europe almost every weekend to keep up with the gigs but it came to a point where I [had to] move to progress even further and be able to rest more on the days off. I decided to move to Amsterdam. Although it’s always tough leaving home, Amsterdam has made it close to painless! [In 2019 I hope to] Just to continue to stay inspired make more music… I just want to continue and push the envelope a further.” VNSSA “All of 2018 has been pretty crazy. I’ve gotten to travel and play more shows than I ever have in my [life]. I think a few highlights of 2018 have been: playing 3 times at Dirtybird Campout including the infamous Family Set, doing on-air interviews with Claude VonStroke and Will Clarke, as well as getting added to Claude VonStrokes version of a “one’s to watch” kind of segment, Birdwatch. [Another highlight was] getting to play my first Night Bass. [It was] one of the best crowds I’ve played for in all of my Dj career! Shout out to AC Slater for having me! Just getting to play around the country and making new friends [has been a highlight of 2018]. I feel like I have friends in so many different states now. It makes me look forward to going back. Not only to play but to hang out with all the new people I’ve met this year. I think the hardest part of 2018 has been just trying to find my own path and focusing on myself. It’s easy to lose sight of your goals and get caught up in what other people are doing and accomplishing. I’ve definitely had to take a step back from social media from time to time. I would find myself comparing other producers accomplishments to mine, and feeling inadequate with the work I’m putting out, or thinking I’m not doing enough. But like I said, everyone has their own paths, their own goals, and their own pace. Social media is a big reason people get down on themselves, myself included, and I’ve learned to go at my own pace and just take things day by day. A big goal I’ve set for myself in 2019 is to put out more music and kinda of just find my sound. A lot of the music I’ve put out so far has been collabs with other producers, and I look forward to being confident in my own productions to release new music on my own. Another goal for 2019 is to learn how to play vinyl and maybe even play some an all vinyl set! You never know!” Super Flu “No doubt, 2018 was an awesome year for us with so many great parties and festivals we played. A very special moment was just a few days ago. We played a 3 hour set for free at our hometown and sold mulled wine to raise money for a charity organization. This was super crazy because so many people supported us and celebrated Christmas with us. The hardest growth this year was changing our booking agency this year and start with a new agent. We were very lucky with our old one, but we had this great opportunity we had to take. [Our hopes for our fans is that] we wish for all nice people to have more time for friends and family and for them to stay healthy. Our plan is always to make great music and develop ourselves.” Get tickets for Minimal Efforts NYE here. And don’t forget about the open bar for VIP! This article was first published on Your EDM. 23. Albuquerque, New Mexico is fast becoming the center of all things cool. If Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul weren’t already enough to give the city some serious cred, the town’s metalhead mayor, Tim Keller, was seen sporting a Pantera sweater at a bill-signing ceremony late last week. Keller, a longtime metal fan who has attended concerts and even introduced Anthrax and Trivium onstage, rocked the Pantera sweater on Thursday as he signed into a law a bill that grants paid parental leave to city employees. In a New York Times interview earlier this year, Keller said, “Albuquerque has always been pretty strong on the heavy metal front. What can I say, this is something I’ve been into for a long time.” In a tweet celebrating the bill signing, Keller personally thanked Pantera bassist Rex Brown for gifting him the sweater. Thank you advocates @lissaknudsen and advocates @ABQCityCouncil and @PatDavisNM for the legislation for our families. And little shout out to @REJASFROMTEJAS for the sweater #metalmayor @BLABBERMOUTHNET @metalinjection @Loudwire https://t.co/B8nmdkLPZ5 — Mayor Tim Keller (@MayorKeller) December 28, 2018 Meanwhile, Brown, who now resides in Albuquerque, posted the news on his Facebook page, saying, “Hats off to buddy & Mayor Tim Keller!! 24. Sad news to report out of Florida, where drummer Seth Howard of the metal band Yashira has died at the age of 24 as the result of a head-on car crash near Gainesville late Saturday night (December 29th). According to News4Jax, Howard apparently drove his car across a center median in Bradford County, striking a Toyota Camry head-on. The drummer was killed, while the driver and passenger of the Camry were rushed to a hospital with serious injuries. Yashira, an up-and-coming Florida sludge metal band, released their debut album, Shrine, in April of this year, after inking a record deal with Good Fight Music. The band had toured this past fall with Zao and Atlas Moth, and back in the spring, performed at the massive Welcome to Rockville Festival in Jacksonville. In addition to the debut album, the band had released new music as recently as September, with the song “Led to Ache” appearing on a split 7-inch with Zao. This morning, Yashira offered the following message via their Facebook page: “Hey all, Where do I start? When I had the idea of this band in my head, Seth was the first person I asked to do it with me. We had been friends for many years prior, so he agreed to jam even though he was a full-time student at the University of Florida (we get it dude, you’re smart). He had been in bands with Connor, I had been in bands with Luke so it all just made sense. It fell right into place, really. We went in that non-air-conditioned storage unit for the first time, wrote a song, and the rest is history. Writing with Seth was such a treat. He knew exactly what he wanted to hear and 9/10 times, that’s the route the songs would take. He was incredible at just listening and putting it all together like a rubrics cube in his head. Creating what we have would have never granted us the opportunities if he weren’t in the mix. He wasn’t the greatest drummer on the planet, but he was to us. When we started to tour, it was more or less a new experience for all of us. Luke and I had done a few brief stints in the southeast with other bands but nothing notable. Seth and Connor had never done anything like it, and Seth loved every second of it. He enjoyed sleeping on top of a bass cab in the back of the van even though he was 6’ 2”. He enjoyed listening to techno while everyone was asleep on absolutely ridiculous drives like Pittsburgh to Jacksonville, or Jacksonville to Philadelphia, Brooklyn, etc. (we’ve done some fucking stupid drives). He liked to just walk around new places while puffing on his weed pen just to explore. We couldn’t possibly convey how grateful we are to have shared these experiences with him. You never really know the true importance of these moments when you’re in them. If you saw him, he was probably laughing to himself about something he saw whether it was just cool to see or actually funny. He was ALWAYS laughing and his laugh was contagious, loud as fuck, and it got etched into the mind of anyone who ever met him. If you met him, you loved him. It’s that simple. He was so goofy and funny. He was absurdly smart and knew all the right things to say at any given moment. The fact that he’s not here anymore makes our world spin slower. We feel so empty knowing he’s not going to reply to our 4 year long group chat or call us and tell us he’s going to be 2 hours late or some shit. As for our future, we really don’t know what’s in store. We’re trying to just process and heal as much as we can. Maybe we’ll pick this up with some sort of plan, maybe we won’t. We haven’t gotten a chance to give it any thought. Right now, all we know is that we and his family miss him so much it hurts. Thank you to William Putney along with Carl and Rick at Good Fight Music for putting out a record with him on it for the world to hear, Sean Mott, Daniel DeFonce, and any show promoter/attendee that made these experiences possible for us to share with him, all the bands we’ve toured/played shows with for memories made, and thank you all so much for the outpour of love and condolences from every angle. Tell your friends you love them every chance you get. Things can change quicker than you’d ever believe. You’ll hear from us sooner or later. Be good to each other. – Dylan, Luke, Connor To the great friend, brother, son, person we’ve ever known, Rest In Peace, Seth. We love and miss you so much. 4/13/94-12/29/18″ Source
