  1. If the rumors are true, Van Halen fans are in for a treat next year. Word has it that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band is slated to tour stadiums with their classic lineup, including bassist Michael Anthony, who was booted from the group shortly before singer David Lee Roth’s return in 2007. If the tour does happen, it would mark the first shows since September 1984 featuring David Lee Roth, Michael Anthony, Eddie Van Halen and Alex Van Halen. While Roth has been back with the band since 2007, Anthony was replaced with Eddie’s son Wolfgang Van Halen in 2006. The rumors stem out of a recent interview Roth did with Vulture, and a report from radio personality Eddie Trunk. Roth told Vulture, “When we come back through town in the summertime and do the original thing, maybe somewhere sportin’, maybe with somebody famous, I’ll make sure we get you all tickets so you can see what we do for gainful employment,” adding, “Because, you know, next time my rock band will be playing the same place that the Yankees play. Okay?” When pressed as to whether the band would be playing Yankee Stadium, Roth answered, “Yeah, but I can’t … If I say something on tape here and everybody goes, ‘Oh, this leaked…’ But, the band will be — I can’t say.” He went on to say, “The band is solvent. And I can say that I contacted colleagues about being part of the show — Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Jason Aldean, the Foo Fighters, [Eric] Church, and [Chris] Stapleton. And they all said that, if everything happens, they would certainly be involved.” On his recent SiriusXM show, Eddie Trunk addressed the state of Van Halen, saying he heard from reliable sources that the band not only will tour in 2019, but will welcome back Michael Anthony. “I hesitate to even talk about this because every year there’s some rumor about Van Halen about to do something or announce something, and ultimately it just doesn’t happen,” began Trunk (as transcribed by Ultimate Guitar). “But, a little more so than normal as we close out 2018, I’m starting to hear some rumblings.” He went on to say, “The rumors from reliable sources — but still rumors that are unconfirmed — is that the band will tour in 2019 with the original band, which would mean the return of Michael, and that it’s gonna be some sort of stadium package.” Van Halen have a history of in-fighting, with only Anthony and Roth’s replacement, Sammy Hagar, showing up to the band’s 2007 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, so we’ll wait for an official announcement before we truly believe the aforementioned rumors. The band last toured in 2015. Source

  3. A lo-fi recording of Metallica’s first show with bassist Cliff Burton is making the rounds on metal sites this week, despite being uploaded to YouTube five years ago. Nonetheless, it’s a rare treat that not only marks Burton’s live debut with the metal legends, but one of the small number of gigs in which Burton and Dave Mustaine were both in the band. Burton, who had been in the band Trauma, joined Metallica in December 1982, replacing original bassist Ron McGovney. His aforementioned first show with Metallica took place on March 5th, 1983, at The Stone in San Francisco. The 12-song set took place one month before Mustaine was fired from the band for excessive drinking and aggressive behavior, and four months before Metallica would release their debut album, Kill ‘Em All. At one point on the recording, around the 6:20 mark, it appears that Mustaine introduces Burton, calling him “the new rager.” Most of the songs played would appear on Kill ‘Em All, which was released on July 25th of that year. Burton, who played on Metallica’s first three albums, would tragically die on September 27th, 1986, when Metallica’s tour bus crashed in Sweden. 4. Twin Shadow has shared a new anthem called “Broken Horses”. In fact, it’s an EP of sorts, consisting of four different versions: the “Santo Domingo Edit”, “Port Antonio Edit”, and two instrumentals of each. Spoiler: They’re not that different. While, yes, there are differences, it’s hardly like going from St. Vincent’s “Slow Disco” to her remixed “Slow Fast Disco”. Anyhow, the release comes only two months after his last song “Hollow Days” and less than a year removed from his last studio album, April’s Caer. Stream the whole thing below and try to decipher the edits. Source
  5. The Mandalorian is packed to the gills with exciting performers — including Werner Herzog! — but the casting announcements aren’t over yet. Director Jon Favreau took to Instagram on Christmas Day to confirm previous reports that the Disney+ series would feature IG-88, a fan-favorite droid from the extended Star Wars universe. “Merry Christmas,” Favreau captioned a photo of the droid in front of a green screen. His post followed reports from Making Star Wars that teased a large role for the droid assassin. “IG-88 has recently been seen on set, filming his close-ups, and being the star that he is on the set of The Mandalorian,” they wrote. “The old time bounty hunter isn’t just standing around either, we’ve had credible reports about blasters being fired and he’s riding speeder bikes and attacking enemies.” Wookieepedia notes that IG-88 is a “chief rival” of bounty hunter Boba Fett. See the post below. The Mandalorian will star Pedro Pascal as the titular lead, as well as Nick Nolte, Carl Weathers, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Gina Carano, and Omid Abtahi. The series will also feature an impressive lineup of directors, including Dave Filoni, Taika Waititi, Bryce Dallas Howard, Rick Famuyiwa, and Deborah Chow. Golden Globe nominee Ludwig Göransson (Creed, Black Panther) will helm the score. Here’s the synopsis: After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic. The Mandalorian is expected to premiere on Disney+ in late 2019. Source
  6. Back in 2006, Banksy “reinterpreted” Paris Hilton’s debut album, Paris, with assistance from Danger Mouse. The pair remixed the album’s tracks, gave the songs new titles (“Why Am I Famous?”, “What Have I Done?” and “What Am I For?”), and changed the cover artwork and booklet with pictures of Hilton topless and other vicious digs. At the time, 500 copies were placed in 48 record stores across the United Kingdom. Now, according to TMZ, a copy of the rare album has been discovered and will soon hit the auction block. The spoofing is expected to fetch over $2,000 when it is auctioned on January 9th, TMZ notes. The most recent piece of Banksy art to hit the auction block proceeded to self-destruct, so potential buyers may want to beware. Below, listen to an audio rip of Banky and Danger Mouse’s reworking of Paris: Source
  7. It’s been more than 10 years since Guns N’ Roses released their last album, Chinese Democracy, and while there is hope that new GN’R music is on the way, we may have just gotten treated to a new Axl Rose song — thanks to the TV show New Looney Tunes, which airs on the Boomerang streaming service. The New Looney Tunes episode reportedly features Axl as a character. His appearance begins with him asking Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig and company if they know where the civic center is, revealing he’s doing a concert with his band Steel Underpants there tonight. The Looney Tunes characters then tell Axl that him a giant asteroid is about to blow up the earth, with Bugs Bunny asking, “Are you guys thinking what I’m thinking?,” and Axl responding, “That I should go back to wearing a mesh jersey and kilt again?” Bugs’ real idea is for Axl’s band to play so loud that the performance blows up the asteroid. Only problem is that Axl’s band isn’t with him, as a giant pig fell out of the sky and crushed their tour bus. Long story short, the Looney Tunes characters band together to back up Axl Rose in concert, and they play a song called “Rock the Rock,” ultimately blowing up the asteroid and saving the world. The song itself leans more AC/DC than GN’R, and it’s unknown which musicians actually backed up Axl for the recording. Of course, Axl fronted AC/DC in 2016 when Brian Johnson had to bow out of the band due to hearing issues. Axl has yet to confirm whether he is in fact the voice of the character, but it does sound an awful lot like him, and, as Ultimate Classic Rock has pointed out, Guns N’ Roses did use the Looney Tunes theme to open concerts on their “Not In This Lifetime Tour”. Last week, guitarist Richard Fortus revealed that there would be new GN’R music “faster than you think.” Perhaps he was referring to the Looney Tunes song all along? So, is it indeed a new Axl Rose song? Judge for yourself in the YouTube and Facebook clips below. We’ve reached out to Axl’s representatives for more information. Source
  8. The Lowdown: 21 Savage’s new record, I Am Greater Than I Was (i am > i was), makes for an interesting experience. At times, he will go off on strings of creative wordplay that fuel his stories with adrenaline; on the flip side, there are moments where Savage’s lyrics feel like generic descriptions and statements that lack any substance. One of the record’s more interesting qualities, however, is that duality within his presentation. While the majority of Savage’s songs have some level of lyrical grit to them, there are moments where he opens up to more emotion, incorporating elements of sorrow, love, and anger. The Good: An example of this dual quality comes in “a lot”. Savage goes into his past struggles, providing a relaxed flow that allows listeners to absorb his words easily. Acknowledging the good in his life along with the bad, his voice gives an air of wisdom from beginning to end. “How much money you got?/ How many problems you got?/ How many people done doubted you?/ Left you out to rot,” he shares at the beginning of the track; the flow continues, guiding the listener on a rich, introspective experience that mixes frustration with joy. “all my friends” provides a look at how Savage’s fame has cost him friendships. Lines like, “I remember times was dark/ Now I’m backstage with a bar/ Couldn’t pay the light bill/ It was dark,” help to create a real means of better knowing the rapper. Throughout the track, one can hear both pride and disappointment in his voice as he shares his success and losses. “ball w/o you” is a take on Savage’s perception of “love vs. loyalty” in relationships; in the first verse, he says, “I’d rather have loyalty than love/ ‘Cause love really don’t mean jack/ See love is just a feeling/ You can love somebody and still stab them in the back.” Another example of tapping into that deep emotion is “letter 2 my momma”. In expressing the ways his mom has helped him out, the cut is a sentimental experience that is bound to bring a smile to anyone’s face. These songs prove Savage’s ability to weave in different emotions throughout his lyrics. While his ability to creatively fit words together is catchy, these emotional elements are what allow i am > i was to shine. The Bad: Where i am > i was falters, however, is in its violent lyricism. For anyone who knows Savage’s music, his attraction towards guns makes for a substantial portion of the record. While there some exceptions in creative delivery on the subject matter, Savage primarily focuses on bland statements about waving and popping guns off. Lines such as, “Both sides of the gun/ I done dealt and felt the pain,” provide that dual quality of grit and honest reflection. It’s weird, then, that those feelings are lost when he goes into another song just spitting about murder. In particular, “good day” comes across as an empty experience, pumping up the concept of violent acts rather than conveying a message about violence. Ironically, “gun smoke” addresses Savage’s interest in guns, but offers nothing of substance besides being a catchy track. Whether the songs are entirely devoted to the subject matter or just include it as a side component, there isn’t much to take away other than straightforward aggression. The Verdict: i am > i was entertains for the majority of its runtime while also presenting great bouts of emotion. 21 Savage’s ability to express a variety of feelings allows the music to stand out at times and become more than a generic gangsta rap presentation. It’s unfortunate, then, that the record finds itself held back by unfeeling and monotonous takes on issues like gun violence. Overall, i am > i was is a mixed bag of experience that offers enough solid tracks to keep fans latched on. Essential Tracks: “a lot”, “all my friends”, and “letter 2 my momma” Source

  10. Jordan Peele has been very tight-lipped about his new horror film, Us, which is a good thing. When it comes to horror, what most Hollywood suits can’t seem to get through their heads is that “the less we know, the better.” If you recall, Peele operated in the same way prior to 2017’s Get Out, and look how well that played out for him: four Oscar nominations with one win for Best Original Screenplay. So, we’re admittedly reluctant to watch the new trailer for his follow-up below, but we’re also confident that Peele has our best interests in mind. Even now, two months ahead of its March 15th release, he remains mum: “For my second feature, I wanted to create a monster mythology,” he told EW. “I wanted to do something that was more firmly in the horror genre but still held on to my love of movies that are twisted but fun.” Based on what we know, and judging from the trailer, the film follows Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o) and Gabe Wilson (Winston Duke), who take their kids back to Adelaide’s childhood beachside home in Northern California for the summer. Everything seems fine, they even spend a day with the Tyler family (Elisabeth Moss and Tim Heidecker) by the beach, that is until they’re visited at night by four figures in the driveway. There’s more, though, as Nyong’o also told EW that “it turns into this relentless nightmare that taps into [Adelaide’s] deepest fears and ours as well — the idea that we might be our own worst enemies.” So, perhaps, we’re dealing with something a little more psychological than traditional monster movie hoopla. Given how deep Get Out is that would hardly be surprising and will likely lead to the most terrifying sequences. We’ll find out, though, on March 15th. In the meantime, catch up on the movies that influenced Peele. The Oscar winner gave EW a whole list of homework for his fans, which is more of a holiday gift for horror hounds: Dead Again, The Shining, The Babadook, It Follows, A Tale of Two Sisters, The Birds, Funny Games, Martyrs, Let the Right One In, and The Sixth Sense. Lots of ghosts in that list. Hmm. Source

New R&B Songstress Introduces a New Anthem for Girls Night Out An emerging new songstress, Yasmeen has been making a steady climb the buzzworthy new artists ladder with her popular acoustic March 2018 single, “Half of Me”. 13. Last week, 21 Savage released I Am > I Was. Though the 15-song album boasted major collaborations with Childish Gambino, J. Cole, Post Malone, and ScHoolboy Q, one notable name was missing from the final tracklist. Travis Scott was originally supposed to appear on the album track “Out for the Night”, but he apparently missed the deadline to submit his contribution. Instead, 21 Savage has now unveiled a second, updated version with Scott’s verse under the title, “Out For The Night Pt. 2”. Take a listen below. On the track, Travis addresses his tardiness, rapping, “P-pardon my lateness, this beat hittin’, slap/ After take one, then just run this shit back/ Say La Flame hot, no, I’m hotter than that (Yeah)/ Told you before, know this deeper than rap.” Last week it was revealed that Travis would be performing at the 2019 Super Bowl Halftime Show. 14. There’s always room for a new Christmas tradition, and who better than Migos to shake up the game. Tonight, the Atlanta trio hooked up with Spotify’s essential RapCaviar to deliver their own spin on the classic holiday poem “’Twas the Night Before Christmas”. Not surprisingly, they went off course from the original Clement Clarke Moore screed, peppering the poem with some Migos-esque ad-libs. Granted, they stumble a little on the kerchief line, but let’s be real, that word sucks. Watch below and start memorizing. Source
  15. Thirty years later, Die Hard has become the de facto alternative Christmas tradition, offering an action-packed detour for pop culture junkies exhausted from obvious fare like It’s a Wonderful Life or Miracle on 34th Street. This year, especially, has been a big one for John McTiernan’s blockbuster with a swath of editorials all confirming it as a Christmas classic and thousands of memes celebrating lines or scenes. One surprising bit came this evening from the New York Police Department (NYPD) and the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), who riffed on the movie by trading coast-to-coast tweets. The NYPD expressed their support for the LAPD in their efforts against Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman), while the LAPD returned the favor by inviting more of their fellow officers to follow John McClane’s (Bruce Willis) lead. Here’s hoping they both shared a Twinkie in celebration. 16. Whoa, stop what you’re doing, put down that eggnog, and dance around the Christmas tree because Nicki Minaj has agreed to lend her voice to next year’s Angry Birds 2, according to Variety. All joking aside, the Grammy-nominated artist joins an admittedly impressive A-list cast that includes returning voices Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Bill Hader, Danny McBride, and Peter Dinklage alongside newcomers Leslie Jones, Rachel Bloom, Awkwafina, Sterling K. Brown, Eugenio Derbez, Lil Rel Howery, Dove Cameron, and Zach Woods. This is hardly Minaj’s first rodeo at the movies. Previously, she starred in Ice Age: Continental Drift, The Other Woman, and Barbershop: The Next Cut. Currently, her role for Birds 2 is unspecified, but here’s hoping she brings some of that anger she exhibited earlier this year on “Barbie Dreams”. Directed by Thurop Van Orman and John Rice, the sequel hits theaters on August 16th and coincides with the 10th anniversary of the annoying mobile game that your parents are probably playing at the dinner table right now. 17. There are few names this year that can be pointed to as such a wild anomaly as Fisher. The Australian producer Australian producer released one of this year’s most viral songs, “Losing It” – having already received a Grammy nomination for it, he now adds another accolade to his growing list. On the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart dated December 22, Fisher scores his first #1 on any Billboard chart with “Losing It.” Writes Billboard, “‘Losing It’ hits No. 1 in its 17th week on the chart. In the history of Dance Club Songs, only two titles have taken longer to lead: Juliet Roberts ‘Caught in the Middle’ in July 1994 (19 weeks) and Tom Tom Club’s ‘Wordy Rappinhood’/’Genius of Love’ in January 1982 (18 weeks).” “Losing It” is also still rising on other Billboard charts, but Fisher has to be feeling particularly great about this one. 18. Get ready for a dark and disturbing Christmas present from Netflix. The streaming giant is teasing another installment of Black Mirror, and no, it’s not the highly anticipated fifth season, but the first of a kind for the series — a movie. It’s called Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, and as you can see from the screenshot below, it’s being dubbed as “A Netflix Film”. Even more intriguing are three words below it all that read: “Be right back.” According to sources of The Independent, the film was directed by David Slade (Breaking Bad, American Gods), who previously helmed Season Four’s “Metalhead”, and stars Dunkirk youngster Fionn Whitehead in the lead role. What’s more, it will be the previously reported choose-your-own-adventure that will allow viewers to dictate where the story goes with their remote control. That would go with the reported runtime, which clocks in at 312 minutes of footage, and especially the rumored synopsis, which reads: “A young programmer makes a fantasy novel into a game. Soon, reality and virtual world are mixed and start to create confusion.” Those 312 minutes likely account for all the different options and rabbit holes viewers will go down as the movie carries on. But, here’s where things get really interesting: Not only is Bandersnatch a real, unreleased game from 1984, which is when this episode reportedly takes place based on leaked set photos, but as one Twitter user pointed out weeks ago, said game was also featured in the Season Three episode, “Playtest”. That latter revelation has led many to believe this may be a prequel to that episode. So, what does “Be right back” mean? As The Independent suggests, a leaked tweet from Netflix’s sci-fi Twitter account stated the next episode would drop on December 28th. However, that’s four days away, and with tonight being Christmas Eve, well, don’t be surprised if the whole thing drops on Netflix come morning. At the very least, it’s worth checking in as you sip on cocoa. Source
  19. Jacob Saint Patrick is here to bless your holiday The holidays are always such a special time of the year. It’s when we hear the beautiful songs that become nostalgic memories imprinted in our minds and we smell in the air the crisp, smoky scents of pine trees, candles, sweets, hot chocolate, and snow (at least in some places). We also get the mystifying feeling of joy and tradition in aura of the activities occurring around you, and now, Jacob Saint Patrick is a new artist spotlight that is here to add his own magical twist to everyone’s favorite holiday in this stunning and breathtaking rendition of the holiday classic “O Holy Night.” Jacob Saint Patrick is a mysterious collaboration with a story of hard-work so humbling you can just hear the strife in the luxurious tones of their vocals and instrumentation. Today, JSP releases its debut track made just for the holiday time. JSP’s sound would best be described as music similar to “alternative rock turned bedroom pop.” In essence, it’s a form of angsty music gone mainstream that becomes a part of your top playlist plays, while still carrying that emo, indie-folk tone. Their sound is reminiscent to compositions by others like Bon Iver, Tep No, Yoste, The 1975, Aquilo, and Emmit Fenn. Jacob Saint Patrick is a formation of ex-Dreamer & Son bassist Jake Sierzega and guitarist Matt Bolton. Their cover of the track was in dedication to the strength and persistence of those who participated in the migrant caravan on the southern US border, in their search for a better life. Below, the artists offered two links to Human Rights Groups that listeners could contribute to in the spirit of the holidays, love, and giving: www.aclu.org/issues/human-right…ts-and-immigration 2. www.raicestexas.org/donate/?rd=anp” The new single is something of dreams truly. It’s a concoction of sounds that roll off the tongue and dance around the mind in the most fantastic of ways. It’s a gentle song that Jake fractures with his broken, velvety voice as he carries the feeling of a heavy sigh throughout the single. A new sense of emotion is created by the work of both Matt and Jake, as they team up on this traditional escapade. The music builds up in just the right areas, and the lyrics fall off lips as if speaking in whispers. By 3:35, literally the world explodes around you into this harmonious, euphoric land of melancholia you–a gorgeous creation of juxtaposition you have never experienced before. Just blast this track to understand what I mean. Truly, the guys resuscitate a new life into the song and add a soul to its ghostly personality. You can now find the track on Spotify, Apple Music, and others, so be sure to give it a listen and let it take over your holiday like it has mine! (Release/distribution at the discretion of Level Music) Also be sure to follow Jacob Saint Patrick on Instagram for more updates of new music to come! Happy holidays to one and all! 21. Renowned DJ/producer Speakerfoxxx has unexpectedly passed away and the news has left many in the industry shaken and devastated. Atlanta native Christen Nilan aka Nilan was described by some as “Queen of ATL.” Her notable credits include work with Terror Squad and Gangsta Boo, as well as her own debut mixtape Dopegirl Anthems. That’s only scratching the surface. “Whether it’s dope ‘boy’ anthems or dope ‘girl’ anthems, what makes it an anthem isn’t a gender, race, class, or creed thing, it’s a lifestyle, an attitude, and a frame of mind,” Speakerfoxxx was quoted during a 2012 interview. “Yes, I am a girl in a male-dominated industry, but guess what, I can hold my own in both. Being a boss has nothing to do with gender.” Speakerfoxxx not only pursued her own ventures, but tirelessly supported countless others DJs and hip hop artists. 22. Kevin Spacey will be charged with felony sexual assault of a teenage boy in early January, according to the Boston Globe. Spacey, 59, is due in Nantucket District Court on January 7th, where will be arraigned on a charge of indecent assault and battery related to a 2016 incident. The alleged incident took place at a Nantucket bar in July 2016 and involved the 18-year-old son of former Boston WCVB-TV news anchor Heather Unruh. Unruh said Spacey purchased alcohol for her son until he was drunk and then stuck his hand inside the her son’s pants and grabbed his genitals. In a bizarre video posted to Twitter on Christmas Eve, Spacey seemingly acknowledged the incident and promised he would be vindicated… all while appearing in character as Frank Underwood from House of Cards. Spacey was, of course, fired from House of Cards prior to its sixth and final season after he was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple individuals. His character was written out of the show, a point which Spacey addresses in the video. “I know what you want,” Spacey says to begin the video. “Oh sure they have tried to separate us but what we have is too strong, too powerful. After all, we shared everything you and I. I told you my deepest and darkest secrets. I showed you exactly what people are capable of. I shocked you with my honesty. Mostly, I challenged you and made you think. And you trusted me, even though you knew you shouldn’t. So we’re not done, no matter what anybody says. And besides, I know what you want. You want me back.” He continues, “Of course, some believed everything and have just been waiting with bated breath to hear me confess at all. They’re just dying to have me declare everything said is true and I got what I deserved. Wouldn’t that be easy? If it was all so simple. Only you and I both know it’s never that simple, not in politics, not in life. But you wouldn’t believe the worst without evidence would you? You wouldn’t rush to judgement without facts, would you? Did you? No, not you. You’re smarter than that.” The video marks Spacey’s first public appearance since November 2017. Source

  24. It’s hard to believe that Skrillex’s Bangarang EP came out seven years ago, but it’s true. The first two years of Skrillex releases culminated in this absolute masterpiece; though it was Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites that earned Skrillex his Grammy, it could be argued that Bangarang is really what solidified him as a legend in the making. The EP celebrated its 7th birthday yesterday, December 23. Its anniversary basically comes as a Christmas present each and every year, a special treat to look forward to. Between the titular track featuring Sirah, “Breakn’ A Sweat” with The Doors, “Summit” with Ellie Goulding… every track on this EP is a winner. Taking the Varien orchestral suite into account, the whole EP spans 37 glorious minutes. Listen to it again below. Photo via Rukes.com This article was first published on Your EDM.
