Like the song says, the piper is calling Led Zeppelin to join him — in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. There, they must once again defend their classic song “Stairway to Heaven” in a long-running case alleging they infringed on the Spirit song “Taurus” to create its iconic sound. The similarities between Zeppelin’s song and “Taurus”, composed by the late Randy Wolfe (aka Randy California) in the late ’60s, have been a decades-long source of debate among classic rock fans. It’s also the source of a lawsuit from Wolfe trustee Michael Skidmore, who alleges that Zepp cribbed from Spirit’s sound for “Stairway”. Zepp won the case in June 2016, after the jury heard testimony from Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, as well as a bandmember from Spirit and other expert witnesses, about the alleged similarities between the tracks. (Read: Dissected: Led Zeppelin) However, per The Hollywood Reporter, that victory turned out to be short-lived, as today’s opinion on the trial from a panel of appellate justices indicates that the jury was not given sufficient instruction on originality and unprotectable music elements. During the original trial, the jury was not allowed to listen to “Taurus”, as the song was copyrighted prior to the federal law covering the use of sound recordings. As a result, the case must now go back to trial. If Spirit ends up winning this case, they might have all the gold they need to buy their own stairway to heaven. Are the two tracks similar? Listen for yourself – here’s “Stairway to Heaven”: And here’s Spirit’s “Taurus”: Ooh, it makes me wonder. Source

LeBron James might just be the best basketball player to step onto the court, but his music playlist could use a little sprucing up. When he and the rest of his LA Lakers team launched into practice mode on Wednesday, they did so to the tune of Eminem, as curated by the three-time NBA champion. It was no fluke selection, though. “Today’s White Boy Wednesday. Seriously,” James told reporters. “You’re laughing, but today’s White Boy Wednesday. It’s the only white boy music day, which I enjoy.” “It’s a universal thing, right?” he asked those around him, most of whom were amused by James’ comments. “It’s just like Taco Tuesdays. It’s a [expletive] thing. You guys look at me crazy when I said it, like, ‘Oh, [expletive], white boys Wednesdays.’” Lakers’ LeBron James on today’s practice soundtrack, which included Eminem: “Today was ‘White Boy Wednesday’. Seriously.” pic.twitter.com/8qVsCfuO3E — Ben Golliver (@BenGolliver) September 26, 2018 James, whom the Lakers acquired from the Cleveland Cavaliers in July for a hefty $154 million, has often been praised for his philanthropy and outspokenness when it comes to racism and sexism, especially in major league sports. So, the pro athlete’s glorifying of Eminem, who doesn’t hesitate to spit sexist, homophobic language, is a bit baffling. (Never mind the fact that the Detroit rapper hasn’t dropped a truly great album since… uh, James was a Cavalier the first time around.) Luckily for everyone in attendance, it wasn’t just Eminem that was played on this week’s edition of White Boy Wednesday. “I love Eminem. But it was more than just Eminem,” James added. “We had a lot of good music today.” LeBron noted that he celebrated the special Wednesdays mostly for head coach Luke Walton and assistant coach Mark Madsen, both of whom are white. “It was a good day!” James previously described Eminem’s latest album, Kamikaze, as “fire.” Maybe next Wednesday he ought to take a cue from the Kamikaze album cover and blast Beastie Boys instead. You can do better, my guy. And maybe consider letting Kendrick handle the Space Jam sequel soundtrack. Now if y’all think this @Eminem “Kamikaze” album isn’t you’re just hating and incompetent of lyrics/cadence/breakdown of his raps. Oh and he putting quite a few in a body bag too ! — LeBron James (@KingJames) August 31, 2018 Source

Each week we break down our favorite song, highlight our honorable mentions, and wrap them all up with other staff recommendations into a playlist just for you. Iridescence is a peculiar album in that every song has a completely different character. Yet, in the context of BROCKHAMPTON, maybe that’s not so peculiar at all. Ever since their debut mixtape, the band have demonstrated a remarkable talent for finding their creative footing in all sorts of areas, from alternative hip-hop to R&B to choral arrangements. They set up quite the precedent for themselves with the Saturation trilogy, but on their fourth studio album, America’s favorite boyband have outdone themselves. “J’OUVERT” is a trademark track, a characteristic blend of razor-crisp production and explosive vocal talent, with the brash style to back it all up. More than that, though, it encompasses everything that makes the new album so great: BROCKHAMPTON are grappling with fame while pushing themselves further creatively with each new release. Iridescence sees them at their most troubled, their most open, and their most experimental — all of which are qualities the public has loved about BROCKHAMPTON from the start. Joba’s spitting, “Wish that I was better/ At dealing with the fame and you fake motherfuckers/ Guess I’m too real,” feels like an accusation, a wish, and a self-declaration all at once. It’s impossible to capture all of what’s right about BROCKHAMPTON in a four-minute-long snapshot, but “J’OUVERT” comes pretty darn close. –Laura Dzubay Contributing Writer _________________________________________________________ Honorable Mentions Robyn – “Honey” After eight years of radio silence, Robyn is back and better than ever with her most recent single off her upcoming album. Title track “Honey” is a characteristically atmospheric dance-pop ballad, merging sadness and joy in the way only Robyn can. –Clara Scott Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper – “Shallow” The sure-fire blockbuster A Star Is Born is set to not only be a fantastic film, but also a musical force of nature, as heard in the lead single from the movie’s soundtrack, “Shallow”, a heart-wrenching ballad that not only highlights both Cooper and Gaga’s talents as musicians but also their dramatic chops. –Clara Scott Greta Van Fleet – “Lover, Leaver” Though Greta Van Fleet’s similarities to Led Zeppelin have drawn them quite a bit of press, the band stands on their own as a solid rock outfit, evident in the soaring intensity of their first single, “Lover, Leaver”, from upcoming debut album Anthem of the Peaceful Army. –Clara Scott Tom Petty – “Gainesville” Tom Petty’s life may have come to a close late last year, but his legacy continues to live on in posthumous releases like this outtake of “Gainesville” from 1998, an Americana story told with Petty’s trademark nostalgia and soul. —Clara Scott _________________________________________________________ Other Songs We’re Spinning Gallant – “TOOGOODTOBETRUE” ft. Sufjan Stevens and Rebecca Sugar The only way to describe the newest single from Gallant is smooth; featuring Sufjan Stevens and Rebecca Sugar, the song follows all three artists through an expansive soundscape full of ups and downs. –Clara Scott Young Thug – “Climax” ft. 6LACK “Climax” might be the most intimate song off of Young Thug’s new EP, a hypnotic confessional that addresses a disinterested partner against a subdued, whisper-filled backdrop. –Laura Dzubay A Deer A Horse – “Double Wide” Brooklyn-based rockers A Deer A Horse return with a riff-heavy, deeply personal song about a family member of bassist-singer Angela Philips who took his own life a few years ago. For Philips, the act of writing and playing the song has become all about healing. –Spencer Kaufman EARTHGANG – “Stuck (With Arin Ray)” “Stuck” adds to the long string of left-field singles from oddball Atlanta hip-hip duo EARTHGANG that pull off the remarkable feat of being as irresistible as they are otherworldly. –Matt Melis R.E.M. – “E-Bow the Letter” ft. Thom Yorke R.E.M. retiring a few years ago didn’t quite signal the end of the world as we know it, but hearing this live at the BBC version of one of their classics with Yorke filling in for Patti Smith on vocals sure reminds us of just how much nicer their music makes this world. –Matt Melis _________________________________________________________ This Week’s Playlist Source

All That Remains will unleash their ninth studio album, Victim of the New Disease, via Fearless Records on November 9th. Along with the album announcement, the band has released the first single, “Fuck Love” (listen below). Singer Phil LaBonte says the new album will feature All That Remains at their heaviest musically in quite some time. “We decided to throw a curveball… and do the heaviest record since For We Are Many in 2010! It was the perfect way to follow-up Madness, where we did some different styles and songs and even covered a country song.” He added, “People might’ve expected something more experimental, but throwing curveballs is what we do.” The band officially released the single “Fuck Love” today, although it “leaked” a week ago. A lyric video for the song is posted below. Another track, “Just Tell Me Something”, features guest vocals from Asking Alexandria singer Danny Worsnop. All That Remains will support the new disc with a late winter UK and European tour with Sevendust. Pre-orders for Victim of the New Disease are available at this location. There was a time last year when it seemed possible Pinegrove would never follow up their critical breakthrough, 2016’s Cardinal. Frontman Evan Stephens Hall came out ahead of sexual coercion allegations in a November 2017 note, stating the band had decided to take an “extended period of time off the road” while they dealt internally with the accusations. The decision came at the request of the unidentified accuser, a woman Hall said he’d been “involved with for a short but intense period of time.” Now, though, the hiatus is over, and Pinegrove is back with a new album, Skylight. Skylight was written and recorded prior to the accusations, and remains largely unchanged since it was tracked in mid-2017. Yet some of the music is remarkably prescient, with lines like “I wanna do much better” (“Light On”) and “I draw a line in my life/ Singing this is the new way I behave now” (“Rings”) mirroring the self-reflection Hall undertook during the band’s time off. “We wanted to honor that,” Hall said of the alleged victim’s request. “She recognized that we’ve honored it, and has since approved our plan to release an album and play some shows later on this year.” Take a listen to Skylight below. In an in-depth examination of the allegations and their fallout, Pitchfork’s Jenn Pelly was able to provide more insight into the situation that led to Pinegrove’s troubled last year. A mediator between Hall and the unnamed victim clarified that the allegations were strictly “verbal and contextual pressure,” and nothing physical. The victim was in a relationship when her intimacy with Hall began, and she feels she was coerced into cheating. While Hall maintains that any interactions were mutual, he acknowledged the validity of the alleged victim’s “right to describe her experience however feels true to her.” “I definitely could have conducted myself better,” he added. There was some mention of a second victim, Autumn Lavis, though she herself clarified that she never classified the relationship as abusive. “The aftermath made me feel bad about myself,” she said. “But I never felt that he was abusive towards me at all. If someone did have a negative experience, I want to validate that, but mine was consensual.” It appears that most of this fallout stems from emails sent by Sheridan Allen, founder of Punk Talks, an organization which purports to connect people in the music industry with therapy for free. After learning of the accusations, Allen emailed festival bookers and acts scheduled to open for Pinegrove on tour revealing the allegations and essentially demanding that action be taken — all without the accuser’s consent. Allen has since been taken to task for misrepresenting herself as a therapist and her handling of the situation. “I made egregious errors and mistakes throughout this situation,” Allen told Pitchfork. “I was acting without any guidance or a board and I have done absolutely everything I can now and in the future to ensure adequate checks and balances, as well as ensuring this will never happen again.” For his part, Hall said he took an active “full re-inventorying of myself” in the wake of the allegations. He earnestly considered the perception of his actions in the relationship in question, and wants his fans to do the same: “We don’t want listeners who are like, ‘We don’t care about this sort of thing.’ We care about this sort of thing. I’m way more sympathetic to people who are like, ‘I don’t understand this situation, it seems fucked up, fuck this band,’ than people who are like, ‘I don’t understand this situation, fuck this situation, I love this band.’ We are thoroughly in favor of the dismantling of patriarchal structures, and the movement right now to elevate survivors and victims of abuse. And we are not interested in a listenership that doesn’t care about that.” All proceeds made from Skylight’s Bandcamp sales will go to Voting Rights Project, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and Musicares, which offers mental health resources to musicians among other services. Read Pelly’s full article for more about the language Hall used in his statement, how Allen’s involvement changed the way the situation was handled, and more from other members of Pinegrove. Source

Malia Obama is currently a sophomore at Harvard University, but it’s not all late night study sessions and academic discussions at Shay’s for the former First Daughter. Like her parents, Malia seems to have her sights set on the entertainment world, as she’s appeared in a new music video for some of her college classmates. The band of seniors is called New Dakotas, and their very college-indie track is called “Walking on Air”. In the clip, one of their bandmates oversleeps and misses practice, getting himself booted from the group. They start holding auditions, and lo and behold, in walks an Obama, singing and dancing (at the 1:41 mark), and even busting out some harmonica (2:01). It’s a brief appearance, but probably the best marketing New Dakotas is ever gonna get, so props to them for knowing how to work those connections. Check out the clip below. Source

SOB x RBE have released their new album, GANGIN II. Stream it below via Apple Music or Spotify. Spanning 15 tracks, GANGIN II is the group’s sophomore release and second one of the year following GANGIN, which dropped in March. It also comes after SOB x RBE’s impressive contribution to Kendrick Lamar’s Black Panther soundtrack. The new LP was previously teased with early cuts “Made It” and “Vibes”. (Read: The Top 25 Albums of 2018… So Far) In an interview with Billboard, the rap collective’s Slimmy B talked about the expectations attached to GANGIN II, especially in the wake of its predecessor’s success: “There are big expectations for sure. Expectations really be high in the first place for us. It ain’t about us exceeding our expectations, though, because it’s just about us versus them. We do what we do whether people like it or not, that won’t change shit; but our people are most likely gonna like it because they like our music. We give ‘em what they want.” GANGIN II comes amidst what appears to be some drama within SOB x RBE, which stands for “Strictly Only Brothers, Real Boi Entertainment.” In a since-deleted tweet, the outfit’s leader Yhung T.O. claimed GANGIN II would be his last with SOB x RBE. Further fueling this rumor is the fact that T.O. has already inked a deal with Interscope and properly released his own solo material; he was also noticeably absent from that aforementioned Billboard interview. While life beyond GANGIN II is still up the air for T.O., the rest of the band is intent on looking forward, with Lul G noting they’re already working on new “group shit” in the studio. To support GANGIN II, SOB x RBE will head out on a tour of the US and Europe beginning the first week of October. Find that itinerary here. GANGIN II Artwork: GANGIN II Tracklist: 01. The 60-track collection pulls from throughout the rock icon’s extensive career, including early days with The Heartbreakers and sessions with Mudcrutch. Due out via Reprise Records, the expansive project was curated and put together by Petty’s daughter, Adria; his widow, Dana; longtime Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench; and frequent engineering collaborator Ryan Ulate. It’s described as “a tribute and love letter pointing to the music in between the hits.” (Read: The Very Best of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) As a preview, three songs from the archival set were shared early. First came “Keep A Little Soul”, an unreleased track taken from the same sessions that birthed The Heartbreakers’ 1982 album Long After Dark, followed by an alternate “clubhouse” version of “You And Me”, recorded by the music legend in 2007. Most recently came this month’s “Gainesville”, an unreleased offering that dates back to Petty’s Echo era. An American Treasure is available in four formats, each with cover art designed by Shepard Fairey (the vinyl edition hits shelves November 23rd). Hit-making rockers Chevelle are gathering a number of tracks that have been released off the beaten path for a new collection called 12 Bloody Spies: B-Sides and Rarities. As the title suggests, the disc culls together songs that haven’t appeared on the standard editions of the band’s eight studio albums, offering remastered versions of the tunes. The track “Sleep Walking Elite”, recorded during the band’s sessions for 2007’s Vena Sera album, has been unveiled as the first single (listen below). Among the other tracks are an acoustic version of “Sleep Apnea” from the band’s 2009 Sci-Fi Crimes album, and a bonus track off 2002’s Wonder What’s Next titled “Under You’re Reformed”. Chevelle’s last studio album was 2016’s The North Corridor, with a press release declaring, “Stay tuned for more from Chevelle soon,” insinuating the band is likely working on a new album. 12 Bloody Spies: B-Sides and Rarities arrives on October 26th, and can be pre-ordered at this location. 12 Bloody Spies: B-Sides and Rarities Artwork: 12 Bloody Spies: B-Sides and Rarities Tracklist: 01. Prosecutors have shared surveillance footage of XXXTentacion’s murder outside a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach, Florida in June of this year. Four men have been arrested and charged with first-degree murder with a firearm and armed robbery with a firearm. One of those men, Robert Allen, appeared in court this week, as TMZ reports. During Allen’s bail hearing, prosecutors played surveillance footage which showed two of the men — Trayvon Newsome and Michael Boatwright — following XXXTentacion from the dealership. Newsome and Boatwright then got into an SUV with two other men, Brown and Dedrick Devonshay Williams, and positioned the SUV to block XXXTentacion’s car from driving away. Newsome and Boatwright got out of the SUV and confronted XXXTentacion. A struggled ensued, leading Boatwright to shoot XXXTentacion. Newsome then entered the passenger’s side door of XXXTentacion’s car and retrieved a Louis Vuitton bag and $50,000 in cash XXXTentacion was pronounced dead at the scene. Today marks the release of Joe Strummer 001, a new box set devoted to the solo work of The Clash frontman, who passed in 2002. Subscribers of Apple Music and Spotify can stream select songs from the project below. The expansive box set encompasses Strummer’s recordings with the 101ers and The Mescaleros, as well as his soundtrack work. Much of the curation comes via his widow, Luce, who’s been archiving the remains of his writings and tapes. Joining her was artist Robert Gordon McHarg III, who previously worked on The Clash’s Sound System box set. All the tracks were restored and mastered by Grammy winner Peter J. Moore. Previously, we’ve heard “London is Burning”, an alternate take of “Burnin’ Street” off his final Mescaleros album Streetcore, and “Rose of Erin”, a 1993 song from the film When Pigs Fly. (Read: The Clash’s Top 20 Songs) “The themes of these songs resonate. I kept thinking, ‘Wow, he was so ahead of his times, but also current, and aware of the past at the same time,” McHarg III of Strummer in an interview with Rock Cellar. “It’s almost like past, present and future is all rolled up into one in everything he touched.” The box set will be available in a number of formats, including a limited edition deluxe box set that will feature vinyl pressings, a 7-inch vinyl single, a cassette, an art print, collectibles, and an accompanying book featuring rare, unpublished photographs, memorabilia, reviews, and technical notes. “The idea behind the book is that it’s an A4 notebook done as if Joe had designed it himself, telling his story,” McHarg III said in a press release. On November 2nd, Tenacious D are scheduled to drop a new album called Post-Apocalypto, which features drums from Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl. For fans who don’t want to wait until then for new material, they’re in luck: The comedy rock duo of Jack Black and Kyle Gass has just launched its corresponding YouTube series of the same name which boasts all-new music from the album. The animated series is comprised of drawings from Black himself, and every character is voiced by Black and Gass. Today’s episode — the first of six to be released every Friday leading up to the LP — finds Tenacious D in the midst of an atomic bomb crisis. They hole up in a 1950s Frigidaire and successfully survive the explosion, only to discover that not much else has. Tenacious D aren’t totally alone though — the bomb’s aftermath has spawned some freakish creatures, including a two-headed dog they decide to name Hope, because even in their cruel, harsh existence, they’re still leaning on some optimism. (Read: The 25 Most Anticipated Albums of Fall 2018) This initial episode of the Post-Apocalypto series is aptly titled “Hope”, and boasts a new album track that’s also dubbed “Hope”. Check out both below. To help promote the kick-off of their animated series, Black and Gass made a surprise appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday. Tenacious D apparently thought they were scheduled to perform, but Kimmel says they’re about six weeks too early. The two-piece still make a pretty badass entrance and give out (see: chuck into the crowd) free burritos, though, so it’s a win-win for everyone involved. Watch that segment below. Tenacious D will support Post-Apocalypto (series and album) with a North American tour that begins in early October. You can grab tickets here. Also, in case you missed it, watch Black channel Bob Ross and paint Gass. Source

Metallica played a benefit concert dubbed “Dreamfest” on Wednesday night (September 26th) as part of the Salesforce company’s Dreamforce technology conference, and the music was apparently so loud, it was reportedly heard miles away by residents of San Francisco. The outdoor show was held at the Civic Center Plaza, with proceeds benefitting the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals. The band has a longstanding relationship with Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, having played private shows for the company’s employees in the past. As SFGATE reports, Twitter started blowing up on Wednesday night with San Francisco residents claiming the concert was keeping them from getting to sleep and that the music was traveling for miles. One Twitter user, Matt Ranalletta, wrote, “Marc Benioff’s Metallica birthday concert is shaking the walls of my apartment from three miles away. Can someone please explain to me what Salesforce even does again?” Another, Aidin Vaziri, complained, “This Metallica set is so loud I’m pretty sure it’s going to topple the Millennium Tower and put like 17 more cracks in the Transbay Transit Center,” referring to San Francisco’s new transportation hub that has been plagued by structural issues. Other fans, meanwhile, were happy with the volume, with Rahul Kupta declaring, “I can hear @Metallica playing ‘Enter Sandman’ from my house. This city rocks!” According to Metallica, last year’s benefit concert helped raise $10 million for the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals, so we’ll go ahead and forgive the metal legends for causing residents of San Francisco to lose a few hours sleep this time around. See some of the tweets from San Francisco residents below, and check out a full list of Metallica’s tour dates here. The Lowdown: Twenty-six years after their last record (1992’s uneven-to-unnecessary Chic-ism), Nile Rodgers & Chic return for a victory lap around a music world in which the former has ascended to the status of elder hitmaker and the latter’s catalog now serves as a funky set of guideposts for a new generation of disco-positive stars with good taste. The Good: After this long of a layoff, we’d probably be satisfied if a new Chic record simply ticked all of the expected Chic-shaped boxes and nothing more. However, for its first two-thirds at least, It’s About Time never settles for a pure nostalgia play. Credit Rodgers’ late-career production renaissance for keeping him abreast of both sounds and rising stars. On tracks like “Do You Wanna Party”, Chic feels more contemporary than bands that have been around a tenth as long. However, the true highlights here come when Rodgers and company wield their own tight disco spin to revitalize sounds stretched across decades of dance floors. “Boogie All Night” bops with the giddy energy of Off the Wall-era Michael Jackson, “Sober” bolsters the already-solid work of Craig David and Stefflon Don with “Poison”-grade New Jack swing, and “Till the World Falls” makes the case for Rodgers’ three-handed guitar work (and its imitators) being the grand unifying force behind the best dance singles of the last 40 years. The Bad: The liner notes of It’s About Time are crowded with guest appearances, many of which fail to justify their own existences. The band sounds boxed in on New Jack producer Terry Riley’s take on “Sober” and plays down to its singer when Hailee Steinfeld falls flat on the forgettable “Dance with Me”, but the record’s two biggest flops are reserved for its two highest-profile collaborators. Lady Gaga takes up the unenviable task of reworking Chic’s all-world 1978 classic “I Want Your Love” and winds up translating the song’s arch drama into an unconvincing Dracula impersonation for most of the choruses. The record’s ultimate raspberry goes to Elton John, who utterly fails to redeem the clunking “Queen”. While the track has admirable goals of functioning as a heartfelt anthem of women’s empowerment, its cringeworthy lyrics send it tumbling into an uncanny valley of sentiment that borders on unintentional self-parody. The Verdict: Chic’s legacy was secure before It’s About Time, and it will survive equally unscathed after its hits, misses, and upcoming 2019 follow-up. The fact that Rodgers and his crew were able to give the world a few new on-point rump-shakers to groove to remains the best kind of benevolence we could hope for in this, or any, year. The Chemical Brothers have returned with a new single, “Free Yourself”, which follows a cover of Tim Buckley’s “I Never Asked To Be Your Mountain” from earlier this summer. “Free Yourself” oscillates between a robotic female voice offering variations on the title and a barrage of laser-like sounds that conjure the feeling of an all-out audial assault. Hear it below. (Read: Top 50 Albums of 1997) The Chemical Brothers’ last LP was 2015’s Born in the Echoes. The U.K. duo will play two sold-out shows at London’s Alexandra Palace next week, and in November they’ll head to Mexico City for the Corona Capital festival. Source

Next May, Taron Egerton (Kingsman) will bring the magic and whimsy of Elton John to the silver screen in Dexter Fletcher’s epic musical fantasy, Rocketman. Today, we have our first look at the Crocodile rocker and, well, he looks damn good. As you can see below, Egerton has totally absorbed John’s ’70s aesthetic, right down to the thinning hair. It’s a promising sign for what’s been a mildly rocky journey, seeing how Tom Hardy was once attached with director Michael Gracey. Taron Edgerton as Elton John in Rocketman, Paramount Pictures This is familiar territory for Fletcher, though, who also stepped in for another rock ‘n’ roll biopic — next month’s Queen foray, Bohemian Rhapsody — after original director Bryan Singer was fired and … um, got in trouble? Nevertheless, Rocketman lifts off May 31st via Paramount and will reportedly give an “uncensored human story of Sir Elton John’s breakthrough years.” Joining Edgerton is Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, and Bryce Dallas Howard. As the MC tells you before introducing him, this man needs no introduction! DJ EZ is a legendary selector and this set is up there with one of the best Boiler Room sets of all time. A mix of breaks, grime, UKG, soulful house music and so much more, the selections are on point and super diverse, yet still aren’t the most memorable part of this set. You may recognise the iconic 14 minute mark transition, possibly the most viral transition of all time and definitely one of the most skilled uses of a pair of CDJs we’ve seen for maybe ever! Check out this classic mix below and revel in what is one of the (possibly THE) greatest Boiler Room sets of all time. Source

Today we have a very special bang-for-your-buck remix package from Key N Krates’ Cura LP, featuring a whopping 10 artists such as Troyboi, Electric Mantis, a very cool drum n’ bass number from Danny Byrd (everyone needs more drum n’ bass in their lives, I say!) and more. Reflecting a sonic evolution many years in the making, Cura sees Keys N Krates evolving from revered instrumental beat makers into musically sophisticated producers and songwriters. It’s great to see such a broad scope on the remix package on this. You may even find some disco and hiphop in there – something for everyone! Listen: Source

After Breakbot’s huge single Another You ft. Ruckazoid we’d caught wind that he had a full EP coming and today we’ve finally got the good! Each track is a disco and funk infused gem that begs you to groove. We already knew Another You was a certified banger that would be hard to follow but the latest single Devotion really shines. It feels a bit less RnB soul and a bit more of a dance track, which gives the EP a bit of diversity and showcases Breakbot’s talent. In true Ed Banger fashion the whole EP manifests a futuristic funk filled sound that gives us strong Daft Punk feels and we can’t get enough. (Who’d have thought right?) So check out the whole EP below and tell us what you think! Source

If you haven’t realised already, the ocean is a gigantic, terrifying place that only seems to reveal its true horror to you once you’ve been swallowed up in its jaws. Take, for example, this kayaking incident that is so bloody unlikely to happen that old mate who got slapped with the octopus should probably run out and buy a lottery ticket. This has our SEAL of approval for the craziest thing you're going to see today. Watch as a seal slaps a kayaker with an octopus in New Zealand. #seal #octopus #wild #TakeMeToNewZealand pic.twitter.com/GRIDrF1X4w — WeatherNation (@WeatherNation) September 26, 2018 As you can see in the video, it appears as if one of the seals was trying to have a nibble on some tentacle and tried to rip the fucker off by slapping it against the nearest stationary object, a poor human being. You can thank Taiyo Masuda for the footage, who was on a kayaking trip out to New Zealand’s Kaikoura Island off the eastern coast of Auckland when he became the unwitting victim of a seal attack. Remember Ministry of Sound’s classic compilation series Sessions? Well it’s back! Forgive us if we start to tear up a little, but we can’t help but get emotional when we picture one of the iconic album covers and remember kicking back to the house sounds of selectors like Mark Dynamix or Tommy Trash. Sessions: Rebirth is a return to the classic underground house series. It looks to create that same vibe of picking up a mix CD, listening all the way through and hearing non-stop gems. They’ve enlisted some killer names to mix the release and created three distinct sounds. Triple J all-round killer KLP pieces together the eclectic house set, alongside Aussie house veteran Mark Dynamix who gives us a masterclass in club sounds and deep house stalwart Robbie Lowe who goes deep, real deep. The musical love-in is a blend of Aussie hard-hitters like RÜFÜS DU SOL and Fisher’s ‘Losing It‘ as well as some other local legends like Pantheon and Set Mo. These are topped with international icons from Purple Disco Machine to Camelphat, Calvin Harris and heaps more! Although smashing together all your favourites seems like a walk in the park, Veteran mixer Mark Dynamix has said that it’s harder than it first seems telling us: “There are a lot of twists and turns but it’s important that each track flows on from the previous one seamlessly and nothing feels out of place. It takes a good while to work out the track order, probably longer than doing the actual mix itself” Adding that to make the cut he’s looking for something just a little different adding “Personally, I love those kind of tracks that step outside the norm just enough – I’m always seeking out the hybrid rather than the absolute.” The mixes have shaped up to be huge ones so check out the tracklistings below, grab yourself a copy here and basque in the nostalgia that we so dearly love! Tech house dance floor igniter, Shiba San, drops his latest work Excluded, and it oozes with energy. The two-song collection was released through the UK record label KalukiMusik, and includes “Look Back”and “Exclusion”. Shiba San Excluded EP Listen to Shiba San’s Excluded: The first track, “Look Back” showcases Shiba San’s versatile approach as he dives deeply into his underground techno roots. His choppy synths chase catchy vocal loops and an ever-building beat that continuously bumps. Shiba hypnotizes listeners with deep grooves and tech house pulses in his second track, “Exclusion”. The French producer intertwines pattering drums that ever so-slightly resemble his debut tech house track “Okay”. Don’t get me wrong the beats are completely different. But hearing fast paced drums like this can easily remind us why we fell in love with this brilliantly rhythmic artist. Shiba San’s hard-hitting vibrations leave you no choice but to move. Hailing from Paris, the tech house Shiba San burst on to the scene with his hit-single “Okay” in 2014. The track received tremendous support and sustained a number one position for 82 days on Beatport’s House chart. International Dance Music Awards’ Winter Music Conference coined his next single “Burn Like Fire” as Best Underground Track for 2015. Shiba San continues to dish out new music. Already he has released two EP’s earlier this year through Relief Records (Off to Funk, 2018) and Dirtybird Records (Don’t Talk, 2018). We’re excited to see what the techno tastemaker has up his sleeve next.
