I got back from Lost Lands last week and thought about the importance of recovering properly after a festival. It’s no secret that festivals take a toll on your body, both mentally and physically. Exploring the festival grounds and walking many miles during the weekend, can be rough on your body. After the festival, it’s time to return to the real world and here is a quick list of the best ways to recover from a festival. Re-hydrate We all know the importance of staying hydrated during the festival but it’s always important to stay hydrated before and after the festival as well. Multiple days of dancing and being under the sun completely drains your energy and drinking water helps you from being dehydrated. I always like to keep a reusable water bottle around, like a Hydro Flask which comes in handy and reminds me to drink water and stay hydrated all day long. You can also drink something with electrolytes and minerals like Gatorade. Pedialyte is often marketed towards children but we all know it’s great to cure hangovers and it also has electrolytes and nutrients. Indulge In Real Food You probably didn’t eat very much all weekend, except for pizza and french fries and maybe a couple protein bars. After a festival you need to replenish with some real food. Try eating a healthy meal with protein and nutrients because your body will be craving nourishment. I like to have some food at home so that I when I get back from a festival I have a healthy meal ready to go but if not I like to go to a favorite restaurant and fuel up there. Soothing Shower The best feeling after a rave is taking a nice soothing shower. This is especially true if you’ve been camping at the festival. Sometimes people sacrifice their personal hygiene when camping so washing the grime away when you come home is a must. Baby wipes are popular when camping but it doesn’t compare to a nice real shower. Even if you do take the time to shower at the festival at the portable showers it still doesn’t compare to a real shower. When I get home from a festival a nice, warm shower makes me feel like a new person. Catch Some Sleep Most of us have full time jobs to be able to afford all the festivals we go to and we have to get back to work as soon as possible. I have come back from a festival where I need to go to work the next day and it’s such a struggle. I recommend you taking a day off after the festival to catch some sleep and recover properly. This will help you catch up on all the sleep you lost during the weekend and help you getting back to feeling normal again as quickly as possible. Plan Your Next Festival The post-festival blues. We all get them. Going from a fun-filled weekend at a festival and escaping reality to coming back to the real world can be tough. You miss the music, the vibes, the people you met, and more. Planning my next festival or looking at my calendar and seeing my next upcoming event always makes me feel better. Having something to look forward to is nice and helps me make me feel better and not so blue. The post The Best Ways To Recover From A Festival appeared first on EDM Maniac. Source

M.I.A. discusses her new documentary on The Daily Show: Watch
News posted a topic in DJ Headquarters
M.I.A. will release her new, incredibly in-depth documentar MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A. in theaters this Friday, September 28th. On Tuesday night, she spoke about the film and other topics during an appearance on The Daily Show. The film covers M.I.A.’s entire life and career, and she explained how using the names she’s gone by as the title reflects that journey. “It’s kind of weird because it’s backwards, because I discovered the meaning of Matangi later on. But the first 10 years I spent in Sri Lanka, that’s what I was called. The next 10 years my name was Maya, but it was made up — it’s a fake name — but it’s nice because it means ‘illusion,’ so it kind of worked out. And then I became M.I.A., which is when people knew me in the world.” (Read: The 25 Greatest Hip-Hop Debut Albums of All Time) “I think you can say conflict is, like, the subject matter there,” M.I.A said when asked how her journey informed her art. “People say it’s chaos but it’s not. It’s conflict and contradictions.” See what else she had to say about her experiences and the upcoming movie below. Source -

Look, Michael B. Jordan is a hunk deluxe. Not going to lie. Sure, he’s an exceptional actor, steals the screen with his charm and charisma, but at the end of the day, he’s one of the hottest actors out there. All of this is to suggest that we’re pretty damn stoked to see him getting sexy, angry, and jacked in the latest trailer for Rocky spinoff sequel, Creed 2. The follow-up to Ryan Coogler’s 2015 blockbuster finds Jordan’s Adonis avenging the death of his father by going toe to toe against the son of murderous madman Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren). In other words, two sons fighting for the sins of their fathers, which has us salivating, even more than the Thanksgiving dinner we’ll be digesting upon its release. As previously reported, The Land director Steven Caple Jr. fills in for Coogler, and works from a screenplay written by the Italian Stallion himself Sylvester Stallone and Cheo Hodari Coker. In addition to Stallone, Jordan, and Lundgren, the film also sees the return of Tessa Thompson, Phylicia Rashad, and Andre Ward. Creed 2 hits theaters on November 21st, 2018. Source

KISS announced last week that they would be embarking on a final tour, but fans have heard that news before. In 2000, the band set out on a farewell tour that ran into 2001, only to declare the next year that the band wasn’t ready to hang up their platform boots. In a new interview with the Rolling Stone Music Now podcast, singer-guitarist Paul Stanley says this time it’s for real, explaining, “The [2000] farewell tour was at the end of the time that we had brought back the two original members [guitarist Ace Frehley and drummer Peter Criss] and it was such drudgery and so difficult and so unhappy that it just seemed like ‘let’s put the horse down.’” He added, “After the tour was over, it didn’t take me very long to realize I didn’t want to say goodbye to the band; I wanted to say goodbye to two members.” Speaking of those founding members, Stanley won’t rule out the idea of having them or other former members be a part of the upcoming farewell trek, saying, “This will be a celebration of KISS and not any individual lineup or any individual members. I wouldn’t rule anything out but it’s not the crux of what we’re doing… and I’m not being coy either. I don’t want to mislead anybody, really that’s not something that’s been given a lot of thought at this point.” Earlier this month, Gene Simmons seemed to mock Stanley over some recent vocal issues, with Simmons saying onstage during a solo show in Australia, “I’ll sing everything, because my voice always works! I don’t lose my voice. I don’t lose my voice… Paul Stanley.” Rolling Stone asked Stanley about the incident, and he responded by taking a swipe at Simmons’ solo gigs, saying, “Gene and I have been together, I think, 47 years or something around that. He’s out having a great time. He’s doing these – most of them are free concerts, and when he charges tickets they don’t sell a lot of tickets – and I’m sure he’s trying to keep it light for the couple hundred people or whatever, and that’s great! I was just with Gene, obviously, day before yesterday and we have a bond that is enviable.” However, Stanley does admit that his voice isn’t quite what it used to be. “If you want to hear me sound like I did on KISS Alive!, then put on KISS Alive! ” KISS announced their final tour during an appearance on America’s Got Talent last week. The trek will be dubbed the “End of the Road World Tour”, with dates expected to be revealed in the coming weeks. Interpol are in the thick of a North American tour supporting their latest album, Marauder. On Tuesday night, they visited Late Night with Seth Meyers to deliver a performance of the album single “If You Really Love Nothing”. The whole thing was shot in black-and-white, a fitting aesthetic for the post-punk rockers. Check out the replay below. Check out our live review of Interpol’s Marauder release show, which took place during the final night of Brooklyn’s House of Vans. Below, revisit Paul Banks’ discussion on Kyle Meredith With…, during which the Interpol frontman reveals how touring the band’s 2002 album Turn On the Bright Lights in full influenced the new album. BROCKHAMPTON dropped their major label debut, Iridescence, last week and unsurprisingly killed it. Our own Wren Graves called the effort “a study in contrasts; a rap variety pack” where not every track falls strictly into the “hip-hop” confines. Take the newest single from the release, “San Marcos”, a touching folk-pop ballad about never giving up on your dreams. The song is part acoustic, part orchestral, all autotune, and one of the most beautiful songs in BROCKHAMPTON’s catalog. (Read: The 25 Most Anticipated Albums of Fall 2018) The song’s new video, directed by none other than Kevin Abstract himself, is equally simple and poignant. The members of the band are simply hanging out on an Australian street in front of a fast food restaurant singing their parts. Abstract moves the camera around in one continuous take until it turns a corner to find a chorus of young kids singing the final refrain, “I want more out of life than this.” Check out the visual below. BROCKHAMPTON will be out on their “I’ll Be There” North American tour beginning October 3rd. Source

This article is being revisited in honor of Dazed and Confused turning 25 this week. I’d argue that it’s easier to identify a rock and roll movie than define one. Looking through this list, there are docs and biopics, concert films and musicals, movies with flick-making and generation-defining soundtracks, and films that don’t seem to have very much to do with music at all. And yet, they all feel like they should be categorized under the old devil horns in some way. They boast a common ethos, carry a certain swagger, and feel rebellious in their own, often unlikely, ways. So, here they are: The 50 Greatest Rock and Roll Movies of All Time. For all these movies (and others) that rock, we salute them. –Matt Melis Editorial Director __________________________________________________________ 50. Baby Driver (2017) Let’s start our list right, with the most recent entry, one that’ll invariably go down as one of the greats in due time. Edgar Wright’s opus of fast cars, gun violence, and Hollywood romance is built around its soundtrack, and while it’s not exclusively a rock and roll affair (shout-out to Wright’s use of a Young MC deep cut), Baby Driver features the rare modern movie soundtrack that functions as the lifeblood of the film itself. From the crackerjack editing to the perfect scene-by-scene placements, rock music becomes an extension of the storytelling. And because of Baby Driver, a new generation has discovered the glories of The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. What’s not to love? —Dominick Suzanne-Mayer Song to Stream: “Bellbottoms” by Jon Spencer Blues Explosion __________________________________________________________ 49. Phantom of the Paradise (1974) Phantom of the Paradise is Brian De Palma’s most whimsical and traditionally funny film. Good rock and roll has a sense of humor amid the cynicism and melodrama of the music. Phantom sardonically skewers the music industry, turning a record contract into a Faustian deal with the devil. Paul Williams brilliantly plays against type as the evil Swan and provides a wonderfully bizarre collections of tunes for the soundtrack, featuring faux ‘50s nostalgia with “Goodbye, Eddie, Goodbye”, the Linda Ronstadt-style country-tinged pop of “Special to Me”, the glammy “Life at Last”, and the gloriously cynical closer, “The Hell of It”. –Mike Vanderbilt Song to Stream: “The Hell of It” by Paul Williams __________________________________________________________ 48. That Thing You Do! (1996) That Thing You Do! hums with authenticity. Tom Hanks’ ode to ‘60s pop rock gets all the details just right. Top-notch set design and costuming paint the snappy tale of the one-hit Wonders. The interaction between the band members feels familiar to anyone who has spent time playing rock and roll with a group at any level of success. It’s the soundtrack that propels the film, with each tune perfectly recreating the popular sounds of the day from Merseybeat to surf rock to Motown girl groups. –Mike Vanderbilt Song to Stream: “That Thing You Do!” by The Wonders __________________________________________________________ 47. The Filth and the Fury (2000) If you ever saw The Great Rock ‘n’ Swindle, you know that it was kinda just that, less a documentary about The Sex Pistols and more an arty dupe (“presented as a mockumentary”) on the part of Malcom McClaren, who sought to control the narrative about the legendary UK band he managed. The Filth and the Fury, also directed by Julian Temple, is an equally biting but proper delving into the history of the Pistols, with interviews, live footage, and Swindle snippets that highlight the true trajectory taken by Rotten, Jonesy, Cook, Matlock, and Vicious, complete with all the scornful words and scathing performances the film’s title suggests. You never get the feeling you’ve been cheated watching this one. –Lina Lecaro Song to Stream: “Anarchy in the U.K.” by Sex Pistols __________________________________________________________ 46. Heavy Metal (1981) Dungeons, dragons, well-endowed barbarians, bad-ass female warriors, zombie pilots, spaceships, and robots: these are the things that teenagers on the fringe adore. So much of rock and roll is intrinsically tied to teenage lust, and the Ivan Reitman-produced Heavy Metal is 88 minutes of just that. Reitman even brings along SCTV cast members — arguably the most rock and roll comedy troupe around in 1981 — to provide the voices of intergalactic lawyers and nyborg snorting aliens. The gangbusters hard rock soundtrack features Cheap Trick, Blue Oyster Cult, and Sammy Hagar, making the midnight movie smoke like a Gibson through a Marshall. –Mike Vanderbilt Song to Stream: “Reach Out and Take It” by Cheap Trick __________________________________________________________ 45. Jailhouse Rock (1957) Despite the name and best-known (striped t-shirt) scenes, Jailhouse Rock is not really a “prison flick.” Elvis Presley’s character does go to jail, where he discovers his musical prowess and pursues it once he gets out, but his journey to stardom proves even more challenging than his time behind bars. His James Dean-ish “bad boy” character makes bad choices, and it all leads to an obvious journey of redemption. But this one ain’t about the story; it’s about the exhilarating music and its star, whose charisma was so off the charts that it was quite fittingly criminal. –Lina Lecaro Song to Stream: “Jailhouse Rock” by Elvis Presley __________________________________________________________ 44. Forrest Gump (1994) Most films dependent on pop songs count on them to take us to a specific place in time within the movie. The Forrest Gump soundtrack takes us through decades of time. There’s lil’ Forrest dancing to Elvis’ “Hound Dog”. Creedence leads the charge in Vietnam with “Fortunate Son” (a tic that has been used in countless films since). Forrest and Jenny reconnect in “Sweet Home Alabama”. An older Forrest finds himself “Running on Empty” all the way across America (and back again). The songs advance the movie, and you never know what you’re gonna get (I couldn’t resist). –Justin Gerber Song to Stream: “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd __________________________________________________________ 43. The Buddy Holly Story (1978) The Buddy Holly Story may not get all the little details right (Holly’s main axe was a Strat, not a Tele), but rock and roll is less about hitting all the right notes and more about the essence of cool. Gary Busey is a revelation as Buddy Holly — a performance that earned him an Academy Award nomination — even performing vocal duties on the Holly tunes featured in the film. Decades on, Buddy Holly’s influence on rock and roll music — from his songwriting to his recording and production techniques to his fearlessness — should be studied by every aspiring guitar slinger. Also, Paul Mooney is brilliant as Sam Cooke. –Mike Vanderbilt Song to Stream: “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On” by Gary Busey and Jerry Zaremba __________________________________________________________ 42. Big Time (1988) Tom Waits’ Big Time exists somewhere in the overlap between concert film, dreamland, and carnival freak show. Waits and wife/songwriting partner Kathleen Brennan decided to record the last North American shows of a tour and release a mix of the footage as a concert film. While the production’s narrative or a precise account of Waits’ alter ego, Frank O’Brien, may be difficult to decipher, the film somehow seems to tap into a new dimension of the avant-garde performer’s songs as the emotive Waits, for example, sings “16 Shells from a 30.6” into a workman’s lantern while the film cuts to him banging on pipes with a hammer or, in another instance, struts along to a madcap version of “Rain Dogs” that resolves into a festive jig straight out of the old country (which one, who could say?). It’s over-the-top, bizarre, and one of the few concert films that leaves you feeling as though you understand a unique artist just a little better for having been thoroughly absorbed and confused. –Matt Melis Song to Stream: “16 Shells from a 30.6” by Tom Waits __________________________________________________________ 41. Tommy (1975) The Who’s Tommy began as an ambitious double album in 1969. Arguably the first “rock opera,” the plot is threadbare, filled with bizarre ideas (a pinball-playing messiah?) from the wild mind of guitarist Pete Townshend. Ken Russell was an inspired choice to bring the story of Tommy to the sliver screen in 1975. Russell’s bonkers visuals compliment Townshend’s concepts, and the film features two showstopping performances (Tina Turner’s “The Acid Queen” and Elton John’s “Pinball Wizard”) and an odd reading of “Go to the Mirror” by Jack Nicholson. The film is weird, over the top, and consistently takes chances — everything you want out of rock and roll. Play this one loud. –Mike Vanderbilt Song to Stream: “Pinball Wizard” by The Who and Elton John __________________________________________________________ Source

The Lowdown: On her eighth album in 14 years, Marissa Nadler stuns with a brief collection of bold folk songs that exudes the best writing of her career. Working with producer Lawrence Rothman, Nadler eschews the sprawling arrangements of her last couple albums in favor of a more direct approach to her storytelling, full of intimate details that linger long after the music stops. Contributions from Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten, Kristin Kontrol, and Mary Lattimore help flesh out the immersive tales Nadler portrays. The Good: Nadler excels throughout the record in crafting stories from multiple points of view, like the remorseful killer on death row in “For My Crimes” and the scorned lover plotting an escape in “All Out of Catastrophes”. Accompanying these are songs about moments so personal you can’t help but relate, whether bemoaning the fact that she can no longer listen to a favorite singer after the relationship associated with his songs went south on “I Can’t Listen to Gene Clark Anymore” or the way she makes a refrain out of the exact mileage on her car when it broke down on “Said Goodbye to That Car”. Along with the sinister undertones that color songs like “Flamethrower” and the haunting “You’re Only Harmless When You Sleep”, Nadler has crafted a remarkably well-rounded collection of songs. The Bad: The album is pared-down and tightly focused, her shortest since 2012’s The Sister. By moving away from the lush, ornate backdrops that enveloped her music on 2016’s Strangers, Nadler keeps the focus on her wondrous melodies and rich poetry. The focus on lyrics over atmosphere largely works, but allows for less variety, lacking some of the resounding expansiveness of her earlier work. The Verdict: The latest in a long career of consistently stellar records, For My Crimes is a shining example of how Nadler continues to impress and improve upon each release. By putting the focus on her expressive characterization, she moves beyond the forlorn goth label that always seemed to accompany her work. With moments of anger and joy, Nadler portrays much more than a wistful sorrow, revealing the many dimensions of her sound. Though compact, For My Crimes is far from slight and marks another welcome addition into what’s become one of the best runs of the 2010s. Essential Songs: “I Can’t Listen to Gene Clark Anymore”, “Blue Vapor”, and “Said Goodbye to That Car” Source

Origins is a new music feature where we ask an artist to share with us the inspirations that led to their latest song Methyl Ethel is one of Australia’s weirdest, most beguiling bands, with its endlessly creative frontman Jake Webb nimbly leaping between sounds that draw upon classic pop, shoegaze, and R&B. The Australian outfit’s 2017 effort, Everything Is Forgotten, marked its 4AD debut, and now the CoSigned act is back with a thrilling new song. Webb describes “Scream Whole” as, “That cold sweat. That swollen throat. That sick feeling bubbling up from your guts.” To sink into its anxious, arresting melodies of the track is to surrender to a promised catharsis that, cruelly, may never come. “What’s the point/ Undo, undo again,” Webb wails against crystalline synths that electrify the senses and, upon disappearing, conjure a sense of chilly, awestruck isolation. Each word feels careful and deliberate, emerging with a concentrated effort from Webb’s mouth, which, fittingly, serves as the centerpiece of “Scream Whole”‘s accompanying video. By the time the song descends into its woozy, drunken bridge, it’s stained in dirt and restrained with rope. Watch it below. For more insight on the track, we asked Webb to break down its Origins. A house in West Perth: I moved into a house in West Perth earlier in the year. We’d been touring on and off for about two years prior and this would be our first long stretch of time in one place. I barely left the studio I set up in the living room of my house for the whole time. It’s a great space, but ultimately a pretty solo one. A story of a ‘scream hole’: I have a friend who once told me that their housemate, another friend and lovely person, had a hole dug in the back garden of their house. Naturally, this was literally a hole to scream into. A beautiful release, this idea has always fascinated me. It is a core concept in the song, albeit one I have manipulated for my own means. Bruce Nauman – Mindfuck: Over the last couple of years I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to DIA in Beacon, NY. The first visit saw me gravitate toward the work of Bruce Nauman. Similarly, my return a year or so later had the same effect. I bought this book at the gallery and it has since been a touchstone for my work on this album. Jean-Paul Sartre – The Age of Reason: There was a point this year in which I’d been cloistered for so long in my studio that I basically developed a phobia of it and couldn’t even walk through the door. The solution? Drink black coffee and read books. This book was the first in a week which saw me tear through a number of books. Above all things, I think JPS is an amazing author. Although I’m reading a translation, the foibles of human existence he is able to detail through language, to me, is astounding. An honourable mention must go to The First Bad Man by Miranda July. Scott Walker: 30th Century Man: I don’t think I’m the only songwriter/producer who turns to music documentaries to provide some sort of insight into the process. I first came across this film in the form of a poster that sits in one of the 4AD offices. I’ve watched it a couple of times, one of which was almost exactly halfway through working on “Scream Whole”. In my mind, the reclusive nature of the Scott Walker portrayed in the film is closely aligned to the character’s point of view, I’m trying to create in the song. The Cure – “The Kiss”: The opening lyrics of this song have this amazing ephemeral imagery that I love. The way our bodies react, almost involuntarily, and manifest what pressures our minds may be laying upon them is very interesting to me. It’s something I notice in myself, thus good fodder for my songwriting. Webb will command his five-piece live band during a few Australian shows this fall, followed by a handful of U.S. dates early next year. Check out the full list of dates below. The Men have always had a workmanlike ethic when it comes to making music. For over a decade, the New York rockers have evolved from one genre to the next, whether it’s country or post-punk or noise rock or simple barroom rock. Now, they’re ready to show their fans how it all began with a compilation of their earliest recordings that they’ve dubbed, Hated: 2008-2011, due out November 9th via Sacred Bones. As the title suggests, the forthcoming collection connects the dots on a number of recordings spanning between 2008-2011. From their original spray-painted debut demo tape to their split with Nomos, to their 7″ and 12″ EP, to their handful of unreleased demos, outtakes, and live recordings, this sucker has everything you need to get a clear and succinct portrait of how this outfit came to be. In anticipation, they’ve shared a special video set to their track, “Ailment”, which features unseen, original 16mm footage captured by indie filmmaker Ryan Marino from his travels throughout the USA in 2009. “I remember the exact moment when ‘Ailment’ came together,” The Men’s Mark Perro says. “We kept talking about one riff just going on forever, and that’s what that song is.” Catch the video below and the tracklist shortly after. Earlier this year, The Men released their seventh studio album, Drift. Hated: 2008-2011 Tracklist: 01. Twist The Knife 02. Hated 03. Free Sitar 04. Gates of Steel 05. Ailment 06. Digital Age 07. No one goes to the club expecting to get hit in the eye by a falling vinyl, it’s just not a situation you would ever think you’d find yourself in. Crazily, this happened last year in the Ibiza club Amnesia and the punter is mad. Mad to the extent that he is suing the club after the record that fell left a 6 inch gash across his face and eyelid. West-Londoner Charlie Mercer was on holidays when the incident happened, and after taking legal action last year Amnesia have finally responded and the lawsuit is underway. Charlie spoke about the incident to The Sun, reliving the crazy incident. “I can still remember the whistling sound just before the disc hit me and the impact. It was pretty hard and then the record flashed across my face. There was blood all over my face and down my shirt. There was so much blood. I was really worried I was going to lose my sight. It was only because the record hit my eyebrow first that I didn’t lose my eye.” Check out the club layout and his gash and make sure that if you do go clubbing at Amnesia you keep an eye out for the decorative hanging records! Jack Black’s The House with a Clock in Its Walls scared up an impressive box office pull this past weekend, but right now the actor’s focused on Tenacious D, his comedy-music project with Kyle Gass. The duo recently announced a new album, Post-Apocalypto, as well as a six-episode animated series of the same name to drop via their YouTube channel. Black drew every frame of every episode himself, demonstrating yet another of the performer’s many talents. As an introduction of sorts to his technique, Black has channeled famous painter Bob Ross, the afro-topped man known for his “happy little trees,” for a new video entitled “How To Draw With Tenacious D”. Gass is on hand in a pair of skimpy undergarments, and Black encourages us to “explore his body together” as he sets paints aside from some sharpies. Gass, here dubbed Kage, eventually exposes all, with Black taking extra care to draw his bandmate’s penis, which he describes as resembling a “tuna can.” Watch the hilarious clip below. The series premieres on September 28th, with new episodes rolling out each Friday up until the album’s release. All six episodes also feature new Tenacious D songs from the band’s forthcoming album, and, as each episode goes up, a song from the episode will be made available via digital music platforms. The album, which features Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl on drums, is due out November 2nd. Pre-orders are ongoing here. Source

I Follow Rivers has arguably the most catchy vocal dance hook of all time. Sorry in advance guys, but this one’s going to be stuck in your head for a while. When the original came out, it had all the makings of a banger but was missing a little something for us dance music heads, cue The Magician Remix and there you had it. It’s a track that utilises a super simple chord progression to accentuate a repetitive vocal hook and nails it in all its simplicity. There’s not much to say about the track except that it’s iconic, check it out below and tell us if you think the remix eclipsed the original! Source

NSW Arts Director Don Harwin has funnelled two thirds of the annual arts funding, a little over $400,000 to a single special project while 11 other applicants recommended by an expert panel missed out according to a document obtained through the Freedom of Information Laws requested by the ABC. The Arts Director approved only 6 of the recommended applicants going against an expert panel who recommended how the share of total funding would be split up. An email chain revealed shows a frantic rush to secure funding for that single project that was also topped up with $220,000 from other parts of the arts portfolio bringing the total to $624,000 in total funding so far. This explains the record low funding when successful applicants were announced earlier this year by the arts funding body Create NSW, although the department claims they were working within revised budgets. The independent panel recommended in total 17 projects involving hundreds of artists share the $660,000 budget with only 6 making the cut and of that, only $256,000 on hand once the chunk of money was redirected to the special project. This is dwarfed by Create Victoria who funded a diverse number of applicants to the tune of $500,000. Although the names of the projects were redacted, it’s largely considered the major beneficiary of the funding was the Sydney Symphony Orchestra with the timing around the “promise” of up to $1,000,000 in funding at precisely the same time. While not against any laws it appears the Arts Director has personally overruled the recommendations by the independent body and pushed through his own preferences going against even his own department who are worried about the “loss of trust” according to Create NSW investment director Sophia Zachariou. The toughest part is the lack of funding for crucial projects such as Sydney Fringe Festival that aimed to use the investment to allow artists from rural areas to showcase their work as part of the annual event as well as other music and arts programs that help support and grow the contemporary sector that often brings with it serious economic benefits over it’s classical sibling. These grants often take days if not weeks to complete and require heavy amounts of resources, quotes and supporting evidence to get over the line so to have any opportunities, especially when recommended by experts is a really tough for small organisations who look to wholeheartedly believe in supporting the arts. There are still some questions to be raised over the connection between Create NSWs executive director of Investment and Engagement Elizabeth Scott and her partner, Emma Dunch, the CEO of Sydney Symphony Orchestra. More to come. [Via: ABC] Source

The Boiler Room x Dekmantel vids came out over the weekend and there were some red hot sets in there. While the highlight was quite obviously Carista (anyone who says otherwise is wrong) all 15 videos provided absolute quality content, but if you’re a little time poor, here are the top 5 we think you should check out and why 1. Carista (Disco/House/Funky sounds) Look we’ve already told you, so don’t make us say it again. Carista hit it out of the ballpark with this one, a super sweet blend of disco, house and some more techy sounds, she exuded an energy and happiness without being overbearing and in your face, she made it about the music and we appreciate that! We’re excited to see a lot more from her in the future! 2. Tom Trago (Live) Tom Trago isn’t a surprise here. His live set is full of cosmic sounds that are a beautiful blend of electronica that is super danceable. His show is polished and shows a mastery of instruments, machines that backs up his vast sonic knowledge. His set tells a story and pulls you along for the ride, so strap in and get ready. 3. Danny Daze (House/Techno/Breaks) Our favourite thing about Danny Daze isn’t just his track selection, which you don’t need to be an aficionado to know is absolutely on point, it’s his absolute mastery of the mixer. Making full advantage of the Pioneer’s range of built in effects, he blends and distorts tracks in a way that makes every track unique yet not ruined. His blending and teasing of tracks creates suspense and build ups 4. Elena Combi (Industrial/Dungeon Techno) Elena Combi‘s set might not be to everyone’s taste, but it was by and large the most diverse of the bunch. A bass heavy mix of sounds that traversed genres others wouldn’t dare to touch. On top of that it did all this while retaining a single theme, one of the Youtube commenters called it ‘dungeon techno’ and you can see why. Chock full of industrial sounds it’s not for the light hearted, listen at your own risk! 5. Tangerine Dream (Live/Ambient Electronica) Tangerine Dream are absolute synth gods and there’s no denying that their part in the Dekmantel’s opening festival was amazing. It’s hard to explain what specifically it is, but there’s an intensity in the sound and production that was unrivalled at the festival and when you put into consideration the technical prowess needed for it, you realise that we have something truly special. Special Mentions have to Identified Patient for making a point of lighting his own dart mid set and David Vunk for being visibly cooked. Source
