Not cheating at all as long as you let folks know how it was mixed. Its still a valid way of showcasing your choice of music and how you would normally structure a mix (ie take people 'on a journey').

Nice work! I also built my own box but cheated with the fan... I went out and bought a laptop cooling stand (USB powered fan mounted under a metal plate). I removed the fan and installed it in the box. I mix with Final Scratch most of the time so Its still powered via USB.

Recently decided to go ahead with a project that I've been thinking about for ages (inspired by a street busker with a similar set up but he was using a midi unit and was creating the music live!). Basically its a inexpensive 5.1 surround system mounted in a bin. The music is controlled by a Hercules console with Virtual Dj software. I have since recessed the 'monitor speaker'under the top deck.
