I hired some powered speakers the other day for a work gig. I took the cover off one before setting it up and noticed it was turned on and the gain (aka volume) turned right up. I powered it up and it sounded terrible, like the low high frequency horn tweeter had died. I tried a few tests, decided it was buggered and put it aside.

I took it back the next day and told them what had happened. The guy helping me appeared to get all bent out of shape and said "we test them all before sending them out". I was trying to work out why he was angry and decided it was because:

A) He probably thought it was me who killed the speaker

B) He didn’t want to say so because I hire a LOT of gear from these guys and I always respect their gear and report any problems

C) He most likely wasn’t 100% sure that a tech had checked it first before hiring it out

D) Because it had been hired to me, he couldn’t chase the previous hirer for the cost of repairs

E) He didn’t know who had hired it before me

F) All of the above

So the moral of the story is…

Always report faulty hire gear to the company BEFORE your event starts. It could save you a lot of a money paying for damages that weren’t your fault.

this happened to me with a 15" i hired from dj warehouse, i took it back while my misses set up the rest of the gear, he tried to say i blew it, so i called the party and showed it it wasnt due to start for another 3 hours... prick, they still try to send me a bill to this day

Yeah I always wondered about this, Since these speakers are used pretty frequently and bashed around a fair bit. What If the speaker just decides to die at that point in time you are using it..... just from general wear and tear?

Is that your fault? Bit of a gee-up and im guessing they would try and pin it on you.
