  2. First of all, let me preface this by saying it is genuinely hard to pinpoint the world’s first ever electronic music label. There is possibly one database that exists and that is where a lot of my initial information came from, but it’s not the easiest database to navigate and I’m still unsure whether or not the database counts record labels that are now defunct. On top of that, without going through Wikipedia’s full list of hundreds of electronic music labels and checking the founding date of each one it’s hard to search for specific starting dates, especially with the wide genre of electronic/dance music. With all that in mind, let’s dive into what I believe is the first legitimate electronic music label of all time. Once again, feel free to tell me I’m wrong, I am a LOT younger than this label and was by no means close to alive when the labels I’ll talk about first came into existence. The year was 1978, Kraftwerk’s Autobahn had been out for a while now and having pioneered the modern electronic music movement it was a relatively safe assumption that they’d also inspire an electronic specific label. Looking back it’s interesting to see that the initial movement they inspired seemed to be that of post-punk, think Joy Division, New Order and the likes. As such, two labels that fronted this music specifically are what I’m coining as the first electronic music labels. Mute Records and Factory Records both ‘started’ in 1978 signing the likes of Joy Division and New Order and eventually Kraftwerk, Moby and heaps more. One of the labels however, can cite their starting as early as January of that year and that would be Factory Records. A British crew started from offshoots of Rabid Records a cheeky punk rock outfit, their first major album release was Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures (1979). From here they’d move on to release a bunch of others over two or so decades, including an album by New Order and a little less on the electronic vein, a release by The Sex Pistols. They would continue supporting both New Order and Joy Division until their eventual demise in 1992. The label, now defunct paved the way for artists that would become renowned as some of the most iconic electronic music artists in the world. Check out their full discography here and educate yourself on some classic electronic tracks. Source
  3. Top line vocalist Anya Ray out of Toronto, Canada emerges into the EDM scene with a passionate debut dance music single. Deriving from European techno and house roots with a touch of pop, Ray is garnering international attention with ‘We Must Survive’. Due to Ray’s song writing skills, vocal abilities and the music production mastery of KLAAS (whose credits include Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Guru Josh Project and Stromae), this uplifting single is quickly coming into the spotlight. Put your hands in the air and give into the feels while moving to Anya Ray’s debut single, ‘We Must Survive’. ‘We Must Survive’ is warm and highly relatable as the message is about sticking with someone through the tough times. As the lyrics about relationship struggles pull on your heartstrings, the melodic and club-ready beat bring your spirits up and empowers you to endure. 5. Los Angeles has become a breeding ground for artists to experience the ins and outs of one another’s sound and culture. The upside of this back and forth and exchange of creative concepts is the development of exciting and new music. LA based producer, SAVI, has been on the cutting edge of creating top notch electronic music, fusing melodic trap and bass with quality vocal work from Aleesa in a collaborative effort with newcomers Not From Mars called “Ballarena”. This one is definitely a new favorite from SAVI and with Not From Mars now on the scene, they’ll easily be ones to watch. This article was first published on Your EDM. 6. Don’t stop the music — unless you’re Donald Trump. Rihanna is the latest musician to hit POTUS with a cease and desist order over the unauthorized use of her music at a recent campaign rally. On Sunday, Rihanna’s song “Don’t Stop the Music” was played over the loud speakers during a Trump event in Chattanooga. When a Washington Post reporter alerted Rihanna of this, she responded by tweeting, “Not for much longer…me nor my people would ever be at or around one of those tragic rallies.” On Monday night, Rihanna’s legal team served the Trump campaign with a cease and desist. “It has come to our attention that President Trump has utilized [Rihanna’s] musical compositions and master recordings, including her hit track ‘Don’t Stop the Music,’ in connection with a number of political events held across the United States,” Rihanna’s legal team wrote in a letter sent to Trump’s White House counsel (via Rolling Stone). “Trump’s unauthorized use of Ms. Fenty’s music… creates a false impression that Ms. Fenty is affiliated with, connected to or otherwise associated with Trump,” the cease-and-desist letter continued. Not for much longer…me nor my people would ever be at or around one of those tragic rallies, so thanks for the heads up philip! https://t.co/dRgRi06GrJ — Rihanna (@rihanna) November 5, 2018 In the last few months, Prince’s estate, Steven Tyler, The Rolling Stones, and Pharrell have all taken similar actions against Trump over the unauthorized use of music. Over the weekend, Guns N’ Roses revealed why it is so difficult for musicians to prevent Trump from playing their songs at rallies. “Unfortunately the Trump campaign is using loopholes in the various venues’ blanket performance licenses which were not intended for such craven political purposes, without the songwriters’ consent,” Rose explained, before adding: Can u say “shitbags?!” Source
  7. For anyone familiar with BIJOU and AViVA (or, hopefully both), this collaboration will seem like a no-brainer. It’s about time they got together and “Run It Back” is an instinctual release for this bass house dream team. As with any BIJOU production, the vibes are sexy and the bass is dark. AViVA brings another layer to the mix with her unorthodox approach to house music. Together, they find a stride that is bold, striking, and most of all, danceable. “‘Run It Back’ for me speaks for itself in regards that the drop hits so hard that we need to ‘Run It Back’ one more time,” BIJOU explains. “This record is heavy, but also keeps that dark forward thinking G-House vibe that both of us are really known for. Stoked to finally get this one out with Aviva!” AViVA dishes on the new release, “Working on this single with Ben was a serious treat. Aside from the fact that this song absolutely POPS OFF in the club.” It’s hard to disagree with that. Listen to “Run It Back” here via Pinnacle Collective and link up with both artists below. 8. David Guetta, Jason Derulo and Nicki Minaj teamed up at the 2018 MTV European Music Awards last night for no ordinary performance. This proved to be one of the most spectacular of the entire night. Guetta stationed himself behind the decks on the stage as Derulo sang his heart out with a rendition of the classical tune “Time to Say Goodbye,” made famous by Andrea Bocelli. The stage transformed into a ballroom as the singer opened up with an opera-inspired routine. The performance took a shift as Guetta introduced “Goodbye,” his mega collab with both artists that just so happens to sample that same classic. To top off the elaborate onstage affair, Nicki Minaj showed up to execute her verses with much precision. It isn’t everyday this type of triple-threat collab comes to life on stage, but the MTV EMAs was just the place. Watch the live performance in full here! 9. “We were staying in Paris, to get away from your parents…” In cooperation with Mickey Rapkin, the author who wrote the book that was the inspiration for the Pitch Perfect franchise, The Chainsmokers are now in the process of producing a movie based on their hit song “Paris.” The feature will reportedly be produced through The Chainsmokers’ newly-formed Kick The Habit Productions banner. According to Hollywood Reporter, Dan Marcus, a former Digital Media agent at UTA, has been named COO and president and will oversee development and production for the company, with Adam Alpert, the duo’s manager and CEO of Disruptor Records, who will serve as CEO. “We are beyond thrilled to have launched Kick The Habit Productions as we continue to bridge the gap between our overall artistic vision, the entertainment industry as a whole and our fans. The age of being only a musician is over and we’re excited to go all-in on this venture to curate, produce and create meaningful projects,” said Taggart and Pall in a joint statement. Added Marcus: “Drew and Alex have a deep connection to their fans, not only through their music, but through what they stand for and represent: transcending preconceived limitations, pursuing one’s passion, entrepreneurialism, and a commitment to living an authentic life. They don’t just sing about these themes in their hit songs — it’s who they are.” There’s no plot yet for the film, but you’re free to extrapolate your own ideas from the song’s lyrics. 10. Riot Ten‘s absolutely relentless new Hype Or Die: Genesis EP has arrived, packed with colossal bangers and head banging anthems to go ham to. Although we can appreciate the creative perspective of all artists in the genre — to be honest — this is what dubstep should sound like. Texas dubstep king Riot Ten comes alive on his six-track EP, Hype Or Die: Genesis, out now on DIM MAK. Of course, this serves as a sequel to his previously released and highly acclaimed Hype or Die: The Dead EP that dropped just earlier this year. Riot Ten isn’t letting up with the heat, not by a long shot. And he isn’t going at it alone — he enlists in the the sounds of Lit Lords, Throwdown, Krimer and more to drive home the madness. Riot Ten shares his thoughts on the new release: “This is the most excited I’ve ever been about a body of work. I really feel like the energy is the embodiment of my musical journey and I couldn’t be happier with it. I also got to feature vocals from some of my favorite artists too, so I’m beyond excited for the world to hear it. And a very special thanks to everyone who was a part of the process.” What are you waiting for? Open up the mosh pit and get live with the most hype new EP out there. 12. Whipped Cream is making her mark, one heavy-hitting track after another. The producer just unleashed “Bad For Me,” which is not only her most emotional form of expression to date — it’s one of her very best. Sweet, storytelling vocals are manipulated to sound distorted, far away. Almost drowning in the filters. There’s something beautiful about the way Whipped Cream fills the space around the lyrics. Those words guide the production softly into the producer’s signature, disruptive kind of style. With the second drop, she really takes off. As “Bad For Me” escalates, it embraces a shift in energy. One that can be best described in Whipped Cream’s own words… Here’s what she says the release means to her: “I turned my unanswered questions, my heartbreak, into art; and I continue to fuel everything I do by it. The idea for this song started over a year ago. I was in a weird place in life, I felt stuck emotionally to someone I was in love with. I knew it wasn’t healthy for either of us and everyone around us knew as well. I stayed for much longer than I should have out of fear. Until one day, I was done hurting and realized I was only holding on to feelings I once had and was strong enough to break free and find the love I needed within myself to walk away for good. This song represents my decision to put all of that unappreciated love for him into myself. I broke free. The moment the drop says ‘BREAK’ is my release.” Listen and link up below! 13. Setting the Stage: Walking through the packed tourist trap that is Times Square in New York City on Saturday night (November 3rd), religious sermonizers preaching the word of Jesus greeted us on various street corners, but little did they know that the word of Lucifer would soon be spread at the PlayStation Theater just a few feet away. Poland’s mighty Behemoth were in town to support their stellar new album, I Loved You at Your Darkest, with frontman Nergal and company were ready to treat fans to a diabolic evening of music. Joining them to entertain the sold-out crowd were Olympia, Washington, black metal act Wolves in the Throne Room and Swedish melodic death metal pioneers At the Gates. Prior to Behemoth taking the stage, we knew we were in for one hell of a night when the sound guy uttered “Hail Satan” to check the mic, as opposed to the usual “1, 2, 3, check, check.” That coupled with about 20 haunting minutes of children chanting lines like “I shall not forgive” over the PA really set the mood. Taking the Stage: Donning masks for the first song, Behemoth opened with “Wolves Ov Siberia” from I Loved You at Your Darkest, one of five new songs the band would play during the evening. After ridding themselves of the masks and revealing their corpse-painted faces, the band followed with “Diamanos” off 2009’s Evangelion, another album that was well represented in the setlist. With a lot of bands, fans often want to hear the “old stuff”, but with Behemoth’s two most recent albums, I Loved You at Your Darkest and 2014’s The Satanist, being two of the strongest efforts in their discography, the newer songs got just as much or more of a rise out of the crowd than the older tunes. ILYAD tracks “God = Dog”, “Bartzabel” and “Ecclesia Diabolica Catholica” were all greeted with adoration from the fans, while The Satanist‘s “Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel” was among the night’s highlights. Just as powerful as Nergal’s guitars and vocals were the meaty bass lines of the muscular Orion, the thunderous drums of Inferno, and the crushing riffs of touring member and not as intimidatingly named Seth on second guitar. Despite the shoulder-to-shoulder crowd, there were circle pits galore, as Nergal soaked in the fans’ admiration, at one point telling the audience that this was Behemoth’s biggest headlining North American tour yet. The night ended with the classic track “Lucifer” and the new song “We Are the Next 1000 Years”, closing out an evening of extreme metal mastery. Extreme Support: At the Gates rarely open for other bands, being a longtime headliner themselves, but they made an exception for Behemoth, and fans were treated to a very strong bill of bands. The Swedish metallers delivered a powerful 11-song set that featured five songs off their 2014 comeback album, At War With Reality, and two from their latest disc, 2018’s To Drink From the Night Itself. Wolves in the Throne Room, who’ve been around for 15 years themselves, opened the night with a solid set of black metal. 14. In new plans unveiled by Lord Mayor Clover Moore and the local Sydney Council businesses are set to see more freedoms in regards to trading times and restrictions. The plan, while only at a local government level, aims to inch Sydney toward a 24 hour trading city, with extra trading hours for those putting on live performances, general increases on trading hours for low impact businesses (until 2am) and the implementation of more late night trading areas in upcoming precincts (Alexandria/Green Square). A full rundown of what the plan proposes are as follows: Extending CBD business trading times making them 24 hours as oppose to until 5am Extended trading times until 2am for businesses and venues outside of the CBD on main streets New late night trading hours in up and coming precincts (E.g. Green Square and Barangaroo) Venues hosting performances having their hours extended up to an hour on the night of said performances (live music, etc) While the proposed laws won’t affect lockouts themselves being a state government issue, it looks to be a step in the right direction for Sydney. You can read more about it through Clover Moore’s Facebook post below. The full proposal will be made available to the public after it’s been put to council, November 19. 15. There’s nothing more heartbreaking than walking past a parked car on a hot day to see a sweltering dog inside, with no access to fresh air or water. While most of us would see if the coast was clear and bust the window in and save the dog, sometimes it’s not that simple. That’s where Tesla Megamind Elon Musks comes in. According to a recent Twitter exchange, Musk could very well introduce a “dog mode” to Tesla cars, ensuring your pup stays safe while you’re out and about. Can you put a dog mode on the Tesla Model 3. Where the music plays and the ac is on, with a display on screen saying “I’m fine my owner will be right back”? — Josh Atchley (@nynex) October 19, 2018 The elevator pitch of dog mode is essentially a mode that will monitor the internal temperature of the car, while also displaying a screen that lets passer-bys know that your pup is safe. Tales of poor dogs trapped in cars are certainly not few and far between. If it’s a hot day out I’d bet my bottom dollar that people keep their eyes peeled for any dogs suffering, hopefully, this is one step towards ensuring all dogs are as comfortable and chill as our friend down below. 16. Following his death earlier this year, Avicii is being shown unwavering support from his fans in all corners of the world. He rose 13 places this year on the DJ Mag Top 100 poll to secure the #15 position and he was also just awarded Best Swedish Act at the MTV EMAs this past weekend. Even though Avicii left this earth seven months ago, his legacy clearly still lives on and his fans are keeping the fire stoked and well fed. Earlier this year, he won best dance video for “Lonely Together” at the MTV Video Music Awards, and his father accepted an award on his behalf at the Swedish Rockbjörnen gala in Stockholm; plus, plenty of artists dedicated tributes to him during their sets or even created songs in his honor. Congratulations to Avicii, may he rest in peace. A full list of winners from the EMAs, including Worldwide Act winners, can be found here. This article was first published on Your EDM. 17. Your EDM is always excited to get in on artists at the ground floor, and this is about as close to the ground as we can get. JACKNIFE is a brand new artist who’s ready to take the scene by storm if this first single is anything to go by. “Rapture” begins with some staple vocal samples about ecstasy before descending straight into the bowels of hell. The drop is a familiar mixture of acid synths and squelching bass that has been dominating bass music in 2018. While this is perhaps not a track you’d take home to show your parents, it’s definitely a worthy contender for the dance floor and shouldn’t have any issue with getting people to move their feet. 18. Remember that Ronnie James Dio hologram that performed at Wacken Open Air in Germany back in 2016 and again at the Pollstar Awards the following year? Well, if you’ve been hoping to catch a glimpse of the hologram in person, now is your chance, as a tour is likely coming to a city near you. According to Billboard, a Dio hologram tour will play more than 100 concerts in 2019 via the production company Eyellusion, which counts Dio’s widow, Wendy, and Ahmet Zappa among its partners. In addition to the festival and awards show performances, the Dio hologram show also played a brief tour of Europe in late 2017. “The big question when we first toured Dio through Europe was, ‘Is anyone actually going to show up?'” Jeff Pezzuti of Eyellusion told Billboard. “We sold out the last three shows in Europe and we did really, really well. We’re such believers in what we were doing and we’re all such massive fans — in my sixth grade class picture, I’m wearing a Dio shirt, so you can imagine taking this all the way across the finish line has been a dream come true.” The Dio hologram production will feature audio of Dio’s live performances, paired with Dio Disciples — Simon Wright on drums, Craig Goldy on guitar and Scott Warren on keyboards, as well as Bjorn Englen on bass — serving as the backing band live and in person. Singers Tim “Ripper” Owens and Oni Logan (Lynch Mob) will also appear on the tour. In addition, Eyellusion also plans to bring a Frank Zappa hologram on tour next year. “The Zappa show is going to set the bar for everything and totally blow everything else out of the water,” Pezzuti said. “It is the most incredible visual show that’s ever been assembled and every song has a different look and feel. It’s going to be an absolute mind f–k, in a good way.” Heavy Consequence will keep you posted on the Dio and Zappa hologram tour dates as they are available. Source

  20. Marshmello is one of the biggest hitmakers in the game — which is exactly why he performed not one but two songs to close out the 2018 MTV Europe Music Awards. First up, he and Anne-Marie performed a stripped down version of their friend zone anthem, “FRIENDS.” They’ve been known to play this song acoustically, so it came as no surprise that they completely nailed it. With Anne-Marie on the mic, and Mello on the piano, they make for a great musical duo. The masked DJ/producer then jumped onto another stage, which Bastille was holding down. Mello took to the drum pads to assist with a unique live performance of their current hit song “Happier.” Earlier in the night, Marshmello beat out The Chainsmokers, Martin Garrix, and David Guetta to take home the “Best Electronic” award during the 2018 MTV EMAs. 21. Just A Gent has unleashed his cleverly titled http://EP in full. It’s a smart, diverse cocktail of bass-driven music and synthy singalongs that will certainly spice up your usual listening habits. If you listen closely, there’s an entire story to be told behind the music. The conceptual EP tells of humanoids, as their existence is jeopardized by the fall of the internet. The five characters represented on the artwork each play a vital role in the story of this EP. Their leader, The Gent had led them away from a corrupt system and now they’ve returned to see their home in complete chaos. As you can hear, that sense of disorder is reflected in the music. “Drowning” is a soft, bittersweet intro that will immediately capture your attention, with the help of Yvng Jalapeño, who has been making his own waves on SoundCloud. The journey goes off with “Space Odyssey,” as Just A Gent portrays a glitchy, untamed world through his music. “Hold” builds on that sound and serves up a crispy, future bass atmosphere. Next up, “VIBE” drastically switches gears with the voice of T.Soko, a rapper with addictive flow and some real expression. His performance is followed up by “404,” the heaviest bass track on the EP with no vocals to guide the storyline. “Injustice” chimes in at the end to tie a neat bow on top of this hybrid work. Just A Gent’s exploration through sound is risky, adventurous, and definitely deserves a listen. Experience http://EP here in full and let us know your thoughts. 22. Devault takes a gorgeously produced stride with Stay, his brand new debut EP that fuses trap and future bass in ways you have to hear to believe. His work is easy to obsess over, as Devault’s pours out his endless creativity, which seamlessly flows through eight distinct, incredibly unique expressions. The title track, “Stay,” featuring Njomza and Bipolar Sunshine opens up the new release with beautifully constructed confidence. The track, which happens to be one of our favorites, is just a preview of the type of emotion about to be felt throughout Stay. Track-by-track, Default reveals his outstanding, one-of-a-kind perspective which has only just begun to blossom. 23. One underappreciated aspect of Stanley Kubrick’s oeuvre is his use of music – an intriguing melange of original score, re-purposed classical music, and cheeky uses of old-timey popular songs, depending on the picture. Now, the musical world of Kubrick is set to be celebrated at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Today, the Los Angeles Philharmonic announced a three-day concert series called Stanley Kubrick’s Sound Odyssey, which will feature “a program of music selections and accompanying clips from some of Kubrick’s most celebrated films,” according to a press release. Some of the films featured will include 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Barry Lyndon, and Eyes Wide Shut. The LA Phil will also be joined by the Los Angeles Master Chorale, led by conductor Jessica Cottis. “Stanley Kubrick’s Sound Odyssey is a tribute to the pioneering director and his groundbreaking use of music in film,” the Philharmonic explains. “Kubrick often rejected original scores in favor of existing or reworked renditions of classical compositions, and he used them so effectively that they’ve become shorthand for his entire style.” (Read: Ranking Every Stanley Kubrick Film from Worst to Best) If that’s not enticing enough, the concert series will be hosted by Alex DeLarge himself, A Clockwork Orange’s Malcolm McDowell, whose work on Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle makes him no stranger to the concert hall. Undoubtedly, the concert will feature the hits like “Thus Spake Zarathustra”, Wendy Carlos’ ominous tones from The Shining, the stately classical pieces from Barry Lyndon, and a whole lot more. Maybe we’ll even hear McDowell belt out “Singin’ in the Rain” again? The concerts are set for Friday, November 23rd and Saturday, November 24th at 8:00 PM, with a 2:00 PM matinee on November 25th, all at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. See you there, fellow droogs. 25. Mike WiLL Made-It serves as the executive producer on the soundtrack for Creed II, the much-anticipated latest installment in the Rocky franchise. Artists set to contribute music to the collection include Lil Wayne, Nas, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, Nicki Minaj, Travis Scott, Kodak Black, and Rick Ross. Today, the Atlanta rap titan shared the OST’s first single, the title-defending anthem “Kill ‘Em With Success”. According to Mike WiLL, the song will “set the tone” for the rest of the album. “Kill they ass with success, they won’t like that,” Eearz taunts on the hook, before flipping through a handful of flows for the first verse. He’s followed by a menacing ScHooolboy Q, who boasts of his “big boy habits, legend status, label classic.” 2 Chainz brings the track to a close with a characteristically sillier set of bars, including the flex, “Can of ass-whoopin’, I got gallons of the shit”. Take a listen below. Creed II is out November 21st. Source
