The Pitch: It’s The Grinch, what more do you need to know? You’re a Mean One: Okay, more specifically, this latest adaption of the iconic Dr. Seuss How the Grinch Stole Christmas! story keeps the same basic plot beats but reconfigures some of the details. The Grinch (Benedict Cumberbatch) is less of a monstrous outsider and more of a self-appointed loner. To avoid ever again feeling the pain of his solitary childhood as a forgotten orphan, the Grinch has banished himself to a Rube Goldbergian home on Mount Crumpit with only his loyal dog Max for company. (Disney princesses wish they had animal sidekicks this cute.) It’s clearly a self-appointed exile, however. Whenever the Grinch does venture down into Whoville, the rest of the Whos are either mildly indifferent towards him or downright excited to see him. A jolly Kenan Thompson-voiced Who even considers the Grinch his best friend. Elsewhere, Cindy Lou Who (Cameron Seely) is re-imagined as a plucky grade-schooler whose Christmas wish is for Santa to lighten the load of her hardworking single mom Donna Lou Who (Rashida Jones). Mr. Grinch: The only decision more baffling than hiring Benedict Cumberbatch to narrate a penguin documentary when he can’t even say the word properly is hiring him to voice the Grinch and then having him use a nasally American accent, rather than his famed British baritone. To be fair, Cumberbatch’s mild-mannered tone fits this softer version of the character, and he does a lovely job selling the Grinch’s post-transformation emotional vulnerability, which gets more of an extended focus here than it usually does. Still, it leaves you wondering if the original plan was to have Cumberbatch use his iconically grouchy Sherlock voice for the role, only for something to change mid-production. (The bigger casting misstep turns out to be Pharrell Williams as the film’s narrator, who unfortunately can’t channel his charming celebrity persona into his lackluster voiceover work.) The Verdict: While it doesn’t hold a candle to the original 1966 Chuck Jones TV special, The Grinch is in every way superior to the truly ghastly Jim Carrey version from 2000. It’s clear that directors Scott Mosier and Yarrow Cheney had both previous adaptations in mind while crafting their own. As in the 2000 version, we get a tragic backstory for the Grinch and a lightly modernized version of Whoville. Thankfully, however, the film emphasizes the warmth and whimsy of the original cartoon over the grotesque, mean-spirited vibe that defined the Carrey version. There’s not a single lusty, oversexualized Who to be found, which doesn’t seem like the kind of thing that should need to be clarified and yet here we are. Still, the simple story (the original cartoon unfolded in a fleet 26 minutes) needs to be expanded somehow, and screenwriters Michael LeSieur and Tommy Swerdlow mostly do so with the Looney Tunes-esque action sequences that dominate the film’s mid-section and give The Grinch an episodic, Saturday morning cartoon vibe. Now it’s time for the Grinch and Max to find a reindeer! Now it’s time for the Grinch and Max to steal a Santa costume! Now the Grinch is playing “All By Myself” on a pipe organ! As the studio behind the Despicable Me and Minions franchises (plus the underrated Sing), Illumination has a bit of a reputation for churning out lowest common denominator fare, aimed at parents who are happy for any cinematic distraction for their kids. There’s some of that in The Grinch’s shallow storytelling (it introduces a compelling dynamic between Cindy and her mom and then does nothing with it, nor does it thematically tie their story with the Grinch’s). Yet there’s at least some real heart and soul in The Grinch’s animation. The film has a lot of fun playing around with size and scale, particularly as it zooms from the streets of Whoville up to the top of Mount Crumpit. Mosier and Cheney give wonderful palpability to the textures of their world, from the Grinch’s pea-green fur to the snow that sticks to it whenever he’s outside. The Christmas lights of Whoville have a real sparkle to them, and animated cookies have never looked so delicious. The whimsical designs of both Whoville and the Grinch’s various Christmas-stealing contraptions help jazz up the film during its slowest passages. As with many Illumination films, the quantity-over-quality nature of the gags sort of becomes its own kind of pleasure. Thompson steals the movie on pure enthusiasm alone, despite never really being given any actual jokes to deliver. And, really, if you can’t laugh at the image of a bulky reindeer trying to hide behind a skinny tree during the holiday season, when can you? While The Grinch never rises to the level of a modern Christmas classic, it’s an enjoyable enough holiday diversion with a core message that’s as lovely today as it was when Dr. Seuss first wrote it. Where’s It Playing?: The Grinch steals Christmas early this year as the film hits theaters on November 9th. Trailer: Source

Prior to his death in June 2018, XXXTentacion was working on a number of projects, one of which was an album called Skins. Now, per an iTunes listing, Skins is set to receive a posthumous release on December 7th. Skins spans 10 tracks clocking in at just 17 minutes, which suggests many of the tracks will appear in unfinished form. The first single is called “Bad” and will be released on Friday. Update: Listen to “Bad” here. XXXTentatcion was shot and killed in an armed robbery at a motorcycle dealership in South Florida. Four men were subsequently arrested and charged with murder. Since his passing, XXXTentacion has appeared posthumously on a number of tracks, including alongside late rapper Lil Peep on “Falling Down”; with Lil Wayne on Tha Carter V track “Don’t Cry”; and with Lil Pump on the Skrillex-produced single “Arms Around You”. Smino has released his new album, Noir, through Zero Fatigue/Interscope. Stream it in full below via Apple Music or Spotify. The follow-up to last year’s stellar blkswn serves as the St. Louis rapper’s second full-length to date. It finds him collaborating with the likes of R&B singer Ravyn Lenae and rappers Valee and Bari. Smino also re-teamed with past producers in LBoogie, Sango, and Zero Fatigue member Monte Booker. (Read: The Top 50 Albums of 2017) In a press statement, Noir is described as a record about the “present, about life now,” and the way Smino has evolved since his first LP. “I guess growth for me means understanding shit and being able to make music intentionally,” remarked the 27-year-old. At the same time, the 18-track effort is said to have a “brighter” feel to it compared to its predecessor, which reflects Smino’s current state of mind. “Just have fun with your fucking life,” the rapper continued. “That’s really what I was doing when I was making the record: just having fun and living off my own confidence.” Noir Artwork: Noir Tracklist: 01. Last week, Smiths legend Morrissey shared his crooning cover of The Pretenders’ 1982 cut “Back On The Chain Gang”, which is set for inclusion on an upcoming deluxe edition of his latest album Low In High School. Now, the anthropomorphic broken heart has taken the cover to the Studio 56 stage for a performance on the Late Late Show with James Corden. Appearing himself to be wearing a Morrissey tour t-shirt, and backed by a band clad in shirts that read “living bodies that actually move,” the performance is a reminder of how powerful the iconic singer’s voice can be, able to transform almost any song into a beautifully sappy ballad. Check out “Back On The Chain Gang” below. At the time of posting, Morrissey’s current tour still has miraculously not yet been canceled. The deluxe reissue of Low In High School, featuring three unreleased tracks, live b-sides, and “Back On The Chain Gang”, will hit stores on December 7th. Source

You wanna get nuts? C’mon! Let’s get nuts! Getting ahead of next year’s 30th anniversary, Mondo has announced that they’re reissuing Danny Elfman’s iconic score to Tim Burton’s Batman. It’s one of the many new and improved Joker products, all with a secret ingredient: vinyl. Similar to their prior release for Batman Returns, they’re issuing two versions of the score: an expanded edition that’s limited to 2,000 copies and a more standard release. Both were produced by Neil S. Bulk and both feature museum-ready artwork by Kilian Eng. The more exclusive, expanded release will assuredly broaden your minds with extended cues spread across two Batman vs. Joker colored vinyls. In other words, one disc comes pressed with a yellow and black swirl, while the other is purple and green. Well, I’m no Picasso, but do you like it? If not, perhaps the standard issue is more to your liking. This one features the original score with no extra goodies and comes pressed on a single 180 gram LP that’s a mix of purple and black. Both go on sale later this month, just in time for the holidays, making THIS … your number one … a-GIFT this Christmas! So, think about the future and watch for the signal over at Mondo’s official site. Because once they’re on sale, they’re going to ship ’em ALLLLLLLL and take ’em out a WHOLE NEW DOOR! Derek Louis is a solo artist in every sense of the word. A drummer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, he wrote, arranged, and performed all of the parts himself on his debut single “I Wouldn’t Trade.” Derek Louis combines modern pop & singer/songwriter sentiments with throwback jazz influences quite gracefully, and there’s a tender strength in his vocals. He starts at almost a whisper, and then soars in the chorus, inviting you to sing along to this personal tale of learning to move on from heartache. A Nashville resident with Boston roots, the 24-year-old has over 7 years of experience as a drummer for nationally and internationally touring acts across multiple genres, and this is so evident now debuting as an artist himself. He has several more songs he plans to release in a similar fashion over the next year! Check out Louis’s multi-instrumental prowess in his in-studio video for “I Wouldn’t Trade” exclusively on GoodMusicAllDay. The single is out on all digital outlets tomorrow! Signal’s newest EP Solitude is due out this Friday, November 9 on Noisia’s INVISIBLE imprint, and it’s probably one of the most interesting releases he’s done to date. With the Synergy collab “Duster” and a glitchy, steppy banger called “Unsure” teasing the EP, fans already know they’re in for a good time with this one. Your EDM has one last premiere to add to the mix before tomorrow’s drop called “Rain Dance” and it shows once again that Signal’s diversity, sound design and his ability to fold drum and bass’s history into one emotive track is the reason he’s still at the top of the game. What will strike old schoolers right away about “Rain Dance” is that it has two bedrock samples folded into it: a digital sample from Q Project’s “Champion Sound”and a vocal sample that was used so much in 90s DnB and jungle that at one point it became ubiquitous for mixing in DJ sets as well as on songs. So what is Signal doing with these two seemingly contrasting samples in a modern track? Pretty much everything unexpected. The samples are woven into a tribal-tinged intro which also contains samples of rain sounds, then continued after the snare-heavy drop which initially, instead of a bassline has halting breath sounds that follow the beat. The bassline then joins the breaths in before they’re modulated to great a number of other different sounds. The beat changes completely after the second drop, going much more dark and heavy, before the old school samples pull the track into a third build and drop which becomes ravey and sort of 80s computer game-ish. The original beat returns with the new ravey synth, and after that it gets really mad. Brain scrambled yet? This description is nothing compared to the actual track. “Rain Dance” is five minutes and 47 seconds of jungle and drum and bass vibes, old school nostalgia, emotive synths and beats and lots of experimentation. Listening to the technical aspects of this track, the layering of sounds and the ambient sound design, one could sincerely write a dissertation on “Rain Dance.” Since it is a dance, however, it’s much more fun to just listen and get loose with the huge vibes. Despite all the technical prowess of this track, it’s pretty clear Signal was all about vibes with this one. Solitude is out on INVISIBLE this Friday, November 9. Check out “Unsure” and “Duster” with Synergy on Soundcloud. Purchase links will be up shortly on Beatport and the INVISIBLE website. This article was first published on Your EDM. Often news headlines will scream and shout amount of kids caught with drugs at festivals while local Police forces will talk about the hefty numbers of those detected with drugs at festivals around Australia year long round and the consistent message that they are disappointed with festival goers who continually flaunt laws to possess and consume illegal substances We don’t disagree drugs can be dangerous and it’s risky to consume not knowing what is used to manufacture them but the headlines can be misleading by shifting the perception of the focus of music festivals and what they really mean – without the music it’s really just a bunch of munted people standing around right? A 10 year report into independent festivals in the UK has crunched the numbers on how much they’re contributing to the local economy and it’s not a small amount. The report by the Association Of Independent Festivals (AIF) found that from 2015-2017 they pushed a whopping £1 billion through the lifeblood of the UK, with the 800 000+ punters attending said festivals spending an average of £483.14 on top of every ticket they buy. Following on from that, the findings were such that the businesses surrounding the festival site were getting about 10 per cent of the spend, meaning local businesses not affiliated with the festivals seemed to be seeing a decent piece of the festival spend pie. These statistics are huge, seeming to show that an injection in the music festival industry should lead to obvious rewards for local communities, yet here we are in Australia have our festival industry being unfairly targeted by the government. You can read the whole 10 year report by the AIF here and tell us your thoughts, do you think there needs to be more support for Australia’s music festivals? Source

As we begin to enter the final months of another unforgettable year of dance music, it’s always refreshing to be reminded of the ongoing renaissance of talent hard lined directly from the underground to our speakers. Paralleling the sounds of both the new and old school to intertwine the creative prowess of differing, yet cohesive generations, Thomas Garcia, Nonfiction, and Roy Wilkins have executed the perfect collaboration. “Unlock The House” brews the collective sounds of artists from varying sides of the artistic spectrum, executing a vibe that resides somewhere between the realms of tech house and techno. Have a listen. This monumental production is one of twelve absolutely stunning creations, leaving a hefty portion of electronic preference for dance music fans everywhere. Supported by dance floor legends such as Leftfield, Vanilla Ace, and Agoria, this tune is an absolute smasher. The tune sparks with a hefty progressive beat that teases listeners with a slow introduction- a slow burn of ascending intensity. Before long, that growing ember engulfs the frequency wall with a techy bassline greeted by a barrage of accompanying sounds to blend the perfect vibe of dance music to close the year out. Big tune. The album is out now, you can purchase it here. This article was first published on Your EDM. Source: Your EDM Premiere: Thomas Garcia, Nonfiction, Roy Wilkins – Unlock The House (Feat. The future is foldable. Samsung has finally and officially unveiled its foldable smartphone — well, almost. During its developer conference today, Samsung introduced a “disguised” device. The lights were dimmed in order to leave much to the imagination. Here’s what we do know… The device, which utilizes Infinity Flex Display technology, is sizable enough to act as a phone and tablet in one. You can fit this bad boy into your pocket, ever so conveniently. No need to worry about it bending, because that’s what it’s made to do by design. The foldable device acts as a traditional smartphone with a 4-inch screen, or expands into a 7.3-inch tablet, which can support three multitasking apps at once. Samsung refers to the multitasking feature as the Multi-Active Window. Oh, the efficiency. With the soft announce, Samsung has revealed plans to begin mass production of the Infinity Flex Display starting early 2019. Within a “matter of months” the foldable smartphone could take over. The Weeknd dropped his most recent EP, My Dear Melancholy,, earlier this year. It featured a number of collaborations with some of dance music’s top brass, including Gesaffelstein and Skrillex. Now, The Weeknd, real name Abel Tesfaye, has officially announced his next studio album, Chapter VI. The news was revealed by Tesfaye himself during a show for the launch of his Toronto-based creative imprint Hxouse. “I want you guys to be the first to know that I’m working on my new album right now,” he told the audience last night (Nov. 6). “Chapter VI coming soon. Let’s get it.” The Weeknd’s last major work before My Dear Melancholy, was his studio album Starboy which famously featured the return of Daft Punk. Up until now, London-based DnB maverick Kusp has used his Detail imprint less as a label and more as an arm of his own personal brand. He self-released on the imprint at will while still releasing on other labels and not really showing much interest in adding new artists and developing a roster. Or so we thought. Enter Arashi, a huge LP from up-and-comer Kusp. With a few hip hop-tinged single releases on other labels like Context Audio and Authentic music, one might wonder why Lynx picked Kusp to be the first new artist on Detail. Upon listening to the album, however, that confusion will easily dissipate as the completely infectious groove takes over. With lots of hip hop influence and cameos from Lynx himself, Kemo and Newsome just to name a few, it’s clear both Kusp and Lynx are sending a message with this one: the funk is not gone from drum and bass. To highlight some of his favorite tracks from Arashi as well as to do something fun and different, Lynx has put together a huge exclusive guest mix for Your EDM listeners only. Opening with the hip hop styled halftime banger of title track, this mix is vibes all the way through. Through Lynx’s mixing expertise, he really showcases Kusp’s diverse, emotive and incredibly different style, but how sounds like his can easily be worked into a stunning set. Although nothing has been confirmed yet about whether Lynx will be releasing more from other artists on Detail, it would certainly appear that he wants to build a platform going forward for new artists and sounds that will push the genre forward and keep the groove and funk in DnB Arashi is out now on Detail and can be streamed on Soundcloud and purchased on Beatport or Juno Download. YOOKiE is bringing it back to the basics so to speak with their newish EP, BASSiC. The release packs five of their heaviest releases to date, maintaining the most important aspect of bass music — bass, obviously. The duo serves up collaborations with Kai Wachi and G-REX to start things off properly, and from there YOOKiE takes off with their own sound. “Human Annihilation” is easily the most unforgiving, followed by “Brain Warp,” which is sure to lose some minds. By the time “Last Transmission” ends, you are at YOOKiE’s mercy. These guys actually got shut down for going “too hard” during a set, so it’s only appropriate that their debut solo EP goes as hard as it does. Listen below and go crazy. The art within the artificial: instrumentation computed in utter harmony with the brains of those willing to lend themselves, their ears, and their youth to the ends of ecstasy. Bass presence hums through a melody that leaves a gathering bouncing to its pulse; a perfect synergy of careless consequence and pure energy. To be honest, I’m still recovering from Posty Fest. Not because of the VIP bar behind the stage, but because of the unparalleled amount of hype Dallas brought to the inaugural hip hop festival two weekends ago. The talent on the roster was absolutely insane. Travis Scott, Tyler, The Creator, Lil Skies, Ski Mask The Slump God and more all on one lineup. Plus, the man himself, Post Malone, who has become a living icon. From sold out shows to chart-topping albums, his own music festival was truly the next step and Dallas showed up for him. Posty Fest was lit indeed — down to the details. A mustard yellow proved to be the color of the day, with blow up figures, stage lighting and visuals to match, and limited edition merch embracing the color scheme. Even spectators were dressed up in this shade. Guess I didn’t get the memo? Dos Equis Pavilion provided the perfect layout for the music festival, complete with chill areas, games, and other activities for people to do with their downtime. Not that there was much, with the totally stacked lineup and all. Still, I moseyed my way backstage only to find another world of surprises. There were tricked out stretch golf carts with mock leather seats and fuzzy walls, complete with disco balls to hitch a ride on. To top it off, you could play your favorite Xbox game on a custom Posty console, courtesy of Mixer. He thought of everything. Back to the main stage for an epic run, I experienced Tyler, The Creator into Travis Scott into the main event, Post Malone. The production value Posty brought to his closing set was next level, as his hits were delivered with sincere excitement and gratitude. The raw, authentic Post Malone witnessed on the stage was just as quality — if not more — than what fans have experienced through his wildly popular albums and steady stream of hits. He’s the real deal. Simply put, Post Malone knows how to throw a party. If Posty Fest happens again, don’t miss out. This article was first published on Your EDM. ZABO just unleashed his absolutely explosive Ghost Lab EP with two distinct weapons, “Baller” and “Bellow.” With this, he joins the Ghetto Ghetto family and serves up a double dose of his hard-hitting sound we’ve already come to love. First up, a collab with Marco Marz, delivers on that g-house mass appeal Ghetto Ghetto is all about. With crazy risers, dark chords, intriguing bass licks, and a pounding kick drum, “Baller” has all the right elements to get your blood pumping. It’s a good thing you’re warmed up, because “Bellow” takes a seriously sharp turn down a deadly midtempo street. ZABO has found early success at this speed, as also demonstrated here. With this one, he goes all in with a thrashing sound design that can only be fully appreciated when turned up to the maximum. If ZABO isn’t on your radar by now… Well, he’s about to be. It was revealed last week that the Avicii: True Stories documentary that was released on Netflix was to be eligible for Oscar consideration in 2019. Though this was great news taken at face value, what many news outlets, us included, failed to examine were the qualifications for Oscar consideration. As it turns out, for a movie to be considered for an Oscar, it must “have played in an L.A. County theater, for paid admission, for seven consecutive days, beginning in the appropriate calendar year.” That being said, Levan Tsikurishvili’s documentary Avicii: True Stories will launch a limited theatrical run in order to qualify for Academy Awards consideration. The film will be shown in New York City from Dec. 21 to 27 and in Los Angeles from Dec. 14 to 20. The documentary first debuted in October 2017. Tsikurishvili described the central message as: “That life can look exciting and glamorous on Instagram and social media, but you don’t really have any idea what’s going on behind that.” With the recent public withdrawals of Carnage, Hardwell, and Deadmau5, it’s inspiring to see even high-profile DJs taking their health more seriously. Avicii: True Stories will be shown in Leammle Music Hall Theatre in Los Angeles and Cinema Village in New York. This article was first published on Your EDM. Bentley Dean is making waves with his new single “Escape” — some seriously dark, emotive waves. We first took notice of the mau5trap producer when We Are Friends, Vol. 7 released, with his “KT” remix for BlackGummy. He has been silently releasing music over the past year or so, which we believe is more deserving of being shouted through a megaphone than keeping quiet. His new one, “Escape” blurs the lines of reality with a graceful and unforgiving soundscape. The producer masterfully designs a heavy groove with another, stuttering pattern beneath it. The lush vocals and little intricacies are worth drooling over, as Bentley Dean welcomes us to his world. Haling from the UK and thriving in Chicago, this won’t be the last we hear from this talent. Allow the sounds of Bentley Dean be an escape… Listen here and link up below. Corrosion of Conformity announced today that they will be setting off on a North American tour next year in support of their most recent album, No Cross No Crown. This new trek will kick off on January 19th at Alamo City Music Hall in San Antonio, Texas, and wrap up on February 27th at Nashville, Tennessee’s The Cowan. CoC will get support on all dates by Crowbar and Mothership, with Weedeater and The Obsessed joining the fun for different legs of the tour. Corrosion of Conformity have been plenty busy this year with headlining shows around the U.S., festival dates, and their recent run of shows in the UK and Ireland. The band has also announced that they’ll be setting sail next October as part of Megadeth’s MegaCruise. No Cross No Crown was released this past January, and was the first album to feature guitarist/vocalist Pepper Keenan since the band got back together in 2010. When CoC reformed after an extended hiatus, Keenan was unable to rejoin the fold due to his obligations with Down. The album landed at #3 in the Top Hard Music Albums Chart, making it the highest charting record in the band’s history. Lone Wolf & Kub aren’t your ordinary rap duo. It’s not everyday that you find a father and son musical duo — even less so within the genre of Hip-Hop — but that’s exactly what we have here with Lone Wolf & Kub. Comprising of father Shao Sosa and son Nobi the Seattle natives have found a way to truly make fatherhood fun. After releasing their self-titled debut album just last month they’ve already dropped a pair of new music videos for singles “Bolo Yeung” and “Street Fighter” and if you can’t tell by the silhouetted samurai in the video still, you’re in for a high-flying, toe-tapping, katana-swinging, good time. I had a chance to sit down and chat with both Shao and Nobi to learn a little bit more about this dynamic duo. Catch the full interview below. How did this all start? What made you two decide to form a rap duo? Shao: I think this was just a natural progression. Being an active MC so long in the underground scene out here and then having a son who was just a natural at spitting, I feel like it was just a certain amount of time that this would eventually happen. The father/son mechanic is pretty unique also. You are seeing it a little more here and there but it’s nice to be one of the few in an arena that lacks rarity. So we definitely wanted to take advantage of that but then also and most importantly, we wanted to just work on something together. Like some and dads and sons work on cars or house stuff, we make music. Were you always a hip-hop focused family? Nobi: Definitely. Pops had already solidified himself as a rapper and my mom married a Tri-Cities jazz musician and producer. From an early age I was exposed to the wonders of golden age hip-hop and encouraged to listen to what I liked. My elementary – middle school days were filled with absorbing as much of it as possible, as well as being exposed to the process of creating instrumentals from scratch and seeing the amount of work it took to become a successful musician. Shao: I think its hip-hop first but we also both have always had really eclectic tastes in music so in the end, it’s also like a music and arts in general focused direction. Why the samurai theme? Is it at all inspired by the Wu Tang Clan? Shao: We have always been really into culture and history from everywhere, but with both of us being of mixed-Asian descent, there was a lot of that cut into our fabric, especially in film. From samurai to kung fu flicks to Hong Kong John Woo type stuff, it’s all been a big piece of what I grew up on and what I exposed Nobi to at a young age. I’d say there’s definitely Wu inspiration from a love and respect standpoint, I mean, those cats have put out some of my favorite albums. But it also goes beyond that. The samurai theme just fits, an aging verbal warrior who is passing the torch to the young upstart assassin so to speak. And tell me about the name, Lone Wolf & Kub, it’s somewhat self explanatory, but how did you come up with it? What was the process like and what does it mean to you? Nobi: Our moniker, Lone Wolf & Kub, comes from a few places; One of our favorite things to do for the past forever, is watch movies. So this one summer, pops and I decide to watch Shogun Assassin (A samurai series based on a manga titled, “Lone Wolf and Cub”). The series held a special place for us because it’s all about this vengeful samurai who goes on a quest to slay an evil shogun with his 4 year-old son on his hip. Side note, the movie also is where the GZA took the intro for Liquid Swords. So the series served as the perfect medium for us with the all of the action combined with it’s hip-hop ties and it made perfect sense when we began writing the first song (Lone Wolf & Kub) to call ourselves the same name. Shao: What’s cool though is if you dig a little further and look at our album cover, you see this old samurai and his mic and this giant wolf-beast behind him. And that just represents the lone wolf samurai and the cub, but the cub is actually the great beast. And I think that matches our chemistry when like sure, I have been out here scrapping for many moons but the boy, the cub is the beast. No one wants to see the beast out here. And that whole idea tells the story of the name as well. Nobi: Lone Wolf & Kub to me is representative not only of a father & son duo with flashy action scenes, but also how their quest to dispel evil spoke to us and we chose to reflect that with the political/sociological content we spoke about throughout the record. How has your music changed since you first started rapping together? Shao: We got more conscious as the album progressed. We had fun with the braggadocio stuff and “Pixels” and the town anthem on “Vintage”, but with everything going on in the world, we started to look around us and inside of us and say “hey man, we need to talk about this”. And we did and I feel like those messages that can be heard in the latter half of the record are some of the strongest points on the album. Who handles the production in your music? Any notable names? Nobi: The entire record was engineered and overseen by Phinisey. He produced 3 of the beats on the album. Originally, we had planned for Phinisey to produce a lot more of it but we got some heat from a lot of guys who we had either collaborated with previously, or had a great deal of respect for. I believe they’re all noteworthy so I’ll list the names here. Lavish Beatz, Nemz, theDGTL, Soultanz, On One, C. Ray, John L, and Phinisey. How has the Seattle scene influenced you? Shao: I feel like the Northwest scene as a whole is really more of what has influenced us, not just Seattle. The scene out here is like a melting pot, kind of like a soup where you got all kinds of flavors going in. Everyone out here is cooking soup, and we all cook it differently so it all tastes like soup, but those cats over there might taste like clam chowder and those dudes over there taste like gumbo. But it’s ok though because most everyone in the region likes to eat different soups. And that’s how the scene out here has influenced us is like we can do what we doin’, and those guys can do what they doin’, and we both dig each other’s cooking but might not necessarily taste like the same type of soup. That’s the Northwest. Nobi: We taste like pho by the way. Who do you envision or hope is listening? Who are you really trying to reach? Nobi: I like to think of this album as our tribute to Golden Era Hip Hop, so I wouldn’t think it’s far-fetched to say that our target audience would be people who share a similar value to that timeless 90’s early 2000’s vibes. Shao: We weren’t interested in doing specific types of sounding songs. There’s no trap music. There’s no club bangers. That’s not because we don’t enjoy that type of stuff, we just kept making what we felt like making at the time and it ended up being a big nod to that 90’s era because we really love that era. What’s the message you’re trying to send? Shao: There’s a lot of social commentary on this album. Trump, Sunday Christians, immigration, generational laziness, gang violence, police violence, greed, family dysfunction, addiction, etc, etc, plenty to take in. But we balanced it with a lot of fun songs as well and the message there would be do something about what you see around you but also don’t forget to live. Don’t forget to breathe. Don’t let the ugliness eat you up. What are your thoughts on the rap game currently? How do you think it’s changed? Nobi: I feel like the game is definitely single or short EP based. I feel like projects keep getting shorter and shorter running-time wise. Look at everything Ye dropped or collaborated on in June, they all ran right around 20 minutes if I remember correctly. I also feel like this is the strongest year for hip-hop that we’ve had in a very long time. We had dope records from Wayne, Em, T.I., Kanye, Pusha T, Saba, J. Cole, Hova, Jay Rock, Styles-P, Dave East, Denzel Curry, etc. I could keep going haha. This year to me is the year everybody old, young, and in-between, dropped fire. I feel like I’m in a renaissance. Who are your biggest influences? Shao: We could probably go on for hours on this. Musically, I might listen to Scarface, Fela Kuti, and Ramon Ayala in that order and all those guys have a place in inspiring what I put in a record. Nobi is the same way, with different artists filling up those really wide-ranging categories of influences. But in the end, we are probably most influenced by what happens each day and what we take in. What else do you guys do as father and son besides rapping? What do you enjoy together? Nobi: Watching kung-fu flicks, playing video games (we did the PUBG thing for awhile, but now we’re waiting for Red Dead Redemption 2 to come out), the occasional hike, criticizing music, pretending we know how to fish, eating dope food, roasting each other in the family group chat, the usual father-son stuff. Shao: I got the funnier barbs. But he kills me on any video game these days. It’s pretty sad. I used to be a beast on the sticks. Now when I play with him and homies, I can hear the collective groan when i jump in the group chat. Anything else you want to share with the world? Shao: Nobi is wrapping up a solo record that is absolutely bananas. Its really gonna be a hard left turn from the Lone Wolf and Kub album. I can’t wait for you guys to get onto that. Also, check us everywhere online as we have a slew of shows coming up that are gonna be super fun and crazy. Coheed and Cambria fans may no longer be able to recognize Claudio Sanchez, as the frontman has cut off his signature long curly locks. Sanchez posted a photo of himself clean shaven with a baseball cap and a short swept hairdo late last night on Instagram, captioning the pic of his new ‘do by stating, “The time for change has come. You inspired me Lawrence, KS. Now, let’s hit the beach! Surf’s up!” For fans who were unconvinced, he followed that post with another pic today of his hair slicked back, stating, “Went and got my s— tightened up. I look like a younger version of my grandfather.” It’s safe to say that the singer is barely recognizable in the the new photos, with fans reacting to the first pic with such comments as, “What in Justin Bieber is this?” and to the second photo with, “I thought this was [Dashboard Confessional frontman] @chris_carrabba for a second!” Coheed and Cambria recently released their latest studio album, Vaxis – Act 1: The Unheavenly Creatures. The album returns to the band’s Amory Wars concept with the first installment of the Vaxis series, which brings new characters and a new cinematic story. “It’s sort of a new story, but as the stories come out with Vaxis, the later records II and III, we sort of unveil where this story truly fits within the timeline and how these characters are related to Coheed and Cambria’s arc,” Sanchez told Heavy Consequence. “So, right now, it’s really kind of an introduction to a new set of characters within the mythos and after the continuation of the Good Apollo Two story, No World for Tomorrow, just the fact that it is a pentalogy and the idea resembles the symbol number five.” Read Heavy Consequence‘s full interview with Sanchez here.
