  1. LAX Airport has officially updated their marijuana policy. According to the LAX website you can now legally travel through the airport with weed. This has legally been a policy since January 1, 2018 when California passed Prop 64 which allowed the legal personal possession of cannabis with adults 21 and over. You are allowed to travel with at least one ounce of mary jane or eight grams of hash through the airport, officially. This updated policy means that law enforcement officials and TSA will not arrest you if you have weed in your luggage within the legal limit. What a time to be alive! NOTE: you are still at risk of arrest if you travel to a state where marijuana possession is prohibited. The post LAX Airport Updates Marijuana Policy appeared first on EDM Maniac. Source
  2. As Gladys Berejiklian doubles down on her stance against illicit drugs and music festivals, former AFP commissioner, Mick Palmer has made his stance for harm minimisation heard. Palmer has come out firing at the government and Premier in particular saying “My mind boggles at the thought that a government is not even prepared to start a trial of pill testing. Clearly she and other state premiers opposing the idea do not have the courage to say what we’ve got now is not working.” He’s joined drug law reform campaigner Matt Noffs to start a drug harm minimisation initiative called ‘Take Control’ which will look to be a national campaign focussing on ideas that reduce and minimise harm, such as pill testing at festivals. The plan will also look to end criminal charges for minor possession of drugs, increasing the number of treatment centres and making better contact services for youth in disadvantaged areas. These ideas all seem pretty good to us, so check out more about the initiative and tell us what you think. Is this a better way to approach the issue? [Via: Mixmag] Source
  3. Festival season has finally begun to wind down as most of us begin to pack away our camping gear, rave clothes and accessories until next year. BUT it’s not over quite yet! For those of you who are looking to end this festival season with a bang, you NEED TO be at High Caliber Music Festival. High Caliber will take place this Saturday, September 29 on the docks of the Deleware River in Cambden, New Jersey. A short drive from most major cities on the east coast and a couple in the Midwest, the one-day festival features 28 artists on three stages on the grounds and decks of a decommissioned U.S. Navy Battleship. Surprisingly, tickets are still available for this festival! Here are four reasons why you should snag yours ASAP and make your way to Cambden this weekend… 1. Dude, it’s on a f****** battleship. What makes High Caliber so unique is that it’s the only one of it’s kind in the entire world. The festival is held aboard The New Jersey (BB-62), a decommissioned Navy Battleship. During its almost 50 years on the waters, the ship earned battle stars in World War II, the Korean Conflict, Vietnam, service prior to Desert Storm and several other service missions. The ship is our country’s most decorated battleship and surviving warship. SO, needless to say, it is one of the dopest ideas ever to bring some of the heaviest names in bass music aboard one of the most valiant ships in the world. That being said… 2. The lineup is absolutely insane. The lineup is what initially drew me to this festival. Then I found out where it was held and it was game over from there man. The High Caliber headliner game is strong; bringing in a couple of the greatest names from the UK to the states to rock the waters of the Delaware River. Capsa, the notorious UK grime dubstep master is set to take hold of the Head Quarters (stage) as the second to last set of the night. Cookie Monsta and Funtcase are scheduled to bring an epic B2B set to close out Head Quarters. Listen, I have seen both of them play at other festivals this summer and I am not playin around when I say these are two sets you do not want to miss. Caspa’s set at Big Dub Festival was a mind-melting masterpiece of some of the filthiest wubs I have heard in a minute. Cookie and Funtcase absolutely murdered the Prehistoric Paradox stage on the final night of Lost Lands; doubling today’s heaters with a couple of their own classics like ‘Scary, Yikes, Grrz’ and ‘Ginger Pubes.’ I can’t wait to see what these three have in store for High Caliber; but I bet you it will be EPIC. The Brooklyn-based Gravedancer Agency has a heavy presence on the High Caliber lineup. Their riddim/dubstep producers have been gaining major traction in the industry over the past year, popping up on festival lineups and news feeds all over the country. Bandlez, Blunts & Blondes and Subtronics will bring their savage sound design to the Head Quarters stage on Saturday. Xaebor and HE$H are set to take over the Bunker with a belligerent B2B set in the late afternoon. While the untamable Al Ross is scheduled to bring the noise to the Armory on Saturday night. Freeform bass music is also prominent on the High Caliber roster. WAKAAN producers Digital Ethos and Luzcid are set to bring their otherworldly stylings to Head Quarter. Eprom is scheduled to take over Head Quarters with his booming bass tunes right before the headliners. Two artists that really push the boundaries with their abilities, DMVU and Dirt Monkey, will bring their sounds to the Bunker and the Armory. Sound pretty dope? Yeah, that’s only HALF the lineup. Unlocked Presents packed SO much filthy bass goodness into one night it should be a goddamn crime. And the artists and music themselves are just the beginning… 3. The atmosphere, sound and sights. As if one of the coolest venues and the stacked lineup wasn’t enough, High Caliber has really stepped up their game in the festival’s second year. This year’s event will feature a new layout for the venue. The Head Quarters stage will be located right off of the ship while the Armory and Bunker stages will bring the decks of The New Jersey to life. Festival organizers are bringing top-notch pk sound to two of the three stages at High Caliber. Philadelphia based VJ, DR01D VISUALS, will be packing an arsenal of custom visuals to light up the main stage. 4. Unlocked Presents knows how to do the damn thing. The event curator for High Caliber, Unlocked Presents, is the premier name in EDM events in the Philadelphia area and beyond. They have worked tirelessly to expand the dubstep scene in the area, putting on dozens of events and bringing some of the top names of the industry to the city over the past year. High Caliber is the brainchild of the group’s organizers and the event has received national recognition since its inception last year. Bottom line is: these guys know what they’re doing. They pour their hearts and souls into these events which is probably why they are dope AF and as successful as they are. Unlocked Presents is also throwing a Pre-Party on Friday night featuring 2017 High Caliber alums Bleep Bloop and Um.. This one-day festival is one you can absolutely NOT miss! Tickets are still on sale but are already 90 percent sold out! Grab yours while you still can, and I’ll see you all on board the New Jersey this weekend! Bon Voyage headbangers! 4. Electric Gardens 2019 has just dropped their first lineup and there are a couple of big inclusions. After a huge 2018 featuring Fatboy Slim, it was a bit worrying to see how the first round would attempt to live up to the hype, but it feels like it’s been done pretty well. Steering away from the heavy hitting DJ headliner, they’ve opted for Underworld to take the reins, a crew renowned for their intense live show and most famously for their track Born Slippy . Alongside them international DJ superstar Erick Morillo will also be headlining with his veteran house sound as well as UK tech house don Eats Everything. Holding it down for Australia Bag Raiders have also been announced to perform live and Sydney boys Set Mo will collaborate with a couple of other artists to round it off. This lineups not looking too shabby, but we’re eagerly awaiting the rest of it. Check the lineup so far below and grab tix here if you think you’re keen! 5. Every so often, a Jimmy Kimmel segment comes along and reminds everyone why they bother watching the show again. Although there are some absolute crackers, Snoop Dogg taking on the nature documentary genre is what I live and breathe for. Snoop Dogg has a fairly unique way of conveying nature’s stories, mainly through “Oh shit cuh back the fuck up” and “Yeah beat that little bitch up, get his ass!” Today, it’s bats versus scorpion as a two of nature’s most forgotten about adversaries look to do battle. Although apparently, you should take all things Uncle Snoop says with a hint of salt, Bats do in fact have eyes and are able to see, however, he’s certainly right that a scorpion tail will fuck you up. If you can’t get enough Snoop Dogg, he’s about to star in a semi-biographical musical about his life called Redemption of a Dogg, and if that doesn’t sound like your cup of tea then what the hell are you doing here? 6. A couple of years ago, Fangoria reported that Halloween could make its way to television. This was at a time when producer Malek Akkad had no idea where to take the franchise following Rob Zombie’s hilarious remakes. Well, seeing how David Gordon Green’s reboot hits theaters on October 19th, it’s obvious that plan never came to fruition. Though, much like The Shape, ideas in Hollywood never die. According to Bloody Disgusting, Akkad says he and his Silver Shamrock cronies are still mulling over the concept of bringing Michael Myers to the small screen. “You know, it’s something that we’ve had for a long time and I definitely want to see it done,” he tells them. “This was in development about a decade ago,” he continues. “At the time, I think the thought was we don’t want to cannibalize the theatrical. Let’s keep it as a theatrical event movie. If that starts flowing down, we would address TV. Nowadays, we all know, TV is pulling out ahead of theatrical in a way that surprised everybody, certainly me.” So, what would the show entail? Would it include Michael Myers? “The one we were developing and that I still feel very strongly about, he’s involved in it,” Akkad added. “That’s really all I can say about it now. It wouldn’t look anything like your traditional Halloween movie, but he’s in there as are a lot of other characters but used in different and interesting ways. Listen via iTunes | Google Play | Radio Public | Stitcher | RSS Follow us on Facebook | Podchaser “Just getting across the finish line for [Green’s movie], that’s the goal right now,” he insisted. “We’ve got the wind at our back, everything looks good. Before we start talking about anything else, it’s all about the movie. [The show] is something that there’s been some discussions.” In hindsight, the concept of a television series isn’t too crazy. After all, this is a franchise that can literally go anywhere, and although the Akkad family has always been hellbent on involving Myers, especially after the dismal returns of the Myers-less Halloween III: Season of the Witch, an anthology approach could do wonders. Here’s a free idea: Tear a page from Fargo and set each season across various Halloween years throughout the Midwest. Maybe set something in Russellville. Maybe jump timelines and revisit what happened to Tommy Doyle and Kara Strode following Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers. Maybe do a whole new story. If anything, this approach would welcome what John Carpenter, Debra Hill, and Tommy Lee Wallace insisted upon all those years ago. The Halloween season brand is strong and given the ensuing popularity of Stranger Things, you really could have some nostalgic fun without even reaching for the ol’ Shatner mask. Just … don’t involve Dangertainment. Source

  8. The Pitch: Hartbeat Productions, a Kevin Hart Company, presents…Night School. The story of a self-proclaimed liar, Teddy (Kevin Hart of Hartbeat Productions), and his yuk-filled quest to get his GED. It’s an Atlanta-bred after-school special with a PG-13 rating and a failing desire to make the class laugh at Hart’s plight. See, Ted’s in his late 30s and has succeeded as a top manager at a BBQ company. But when he blows up his store with a cork hitting a propane can, Ted’s out of a job. Now Ted must deal with being a high school dropout, and the realization that his options are limited. (Ted’s also engaged, and may have bluffed that he’s transitioning to finance to his fiancée. Classic Ted.) Anyway, he needs a GED for job-hunting, and he needs it in secret to avoid total embarrassment. Enter night courses with Carrie (Tiffany Haddish), Ted’s new teacher. She’s truthful. She’s no-nonsense. She’s got literally nothing to lose because she’s a broke, exhausted educator. Like in life. Night School. A Hartbeat Production. Same Old Syllabus: Remember spring’s Life of the Party with Melissa McCarthy? Or the meta-licious pairing of 21 and 22 Jump Street? Or Billy Madison? Rodney’s Back to School? There’s such a dusty familiarity to the adult-in-school subgenre that it feels like cheating to keep using the outline. Pair a couple of comic leads (they have to be foils who eventually make up), divide by perceivably wacky students-cum-friends (archetypes, cliches work decisively), throw in a scheme (test theft), some lessons (learning disabilities, second chances) and voila: product by the textbook. Night School checks off all these answers off with predictable energy. The movie’s merely the latest A-list comedy of this sort, is happy to live in the middle, and yet it frustratingly outwears its welcome because of a lack of creativity and sloppy structure. Yes, Night School is a smiling C-student in this class of comedy. Fuzzy Math: There’s something amiss about Night School. Director Malcolm D. Lee (cousin of Spike) and rising star Haddish are back in the saddle for a quick star vehicle to capitalize on the duo’s tremendous success with Girls Trip. So why doesn’t Haddish feel like she’s actually the star? It’s hard to put a finger on, but a few things on-and-offscreen contribute to this. The movie was filmed last September, and if one were to guess, Universal realized they had a hot new name on their hands with Haddish, so they expanded her role after the greenlight for what was likely a Hart vehicle. Haddish appears sporadically, and in tacked-on fashion. She initially rolls up in a VW with panache as a miracle worker for Ted, but any following scenes for her are piled on, inelegantly. Her floating head shows up (achieved through After Effects?) in study montages, and several of her appearances feel outside the movie (you’ll get it when you see her in a fight cage with Hart, for reasons dubious). Her lines are also stock at best, like calling Hart a “leprechaun” because he’s short. She vogues, she shows compassion and toughness for the world’s hardest job, and she brings a recognizably appealing confidence and crassness. But she works in bursts, at the edges of the movie. Haddish might be on the poster, but the film doesn’t give her nearly enough. And that’s because, one thinks, this was intended to be Hart’s show. By now, you know Hart’s performance: big, broad, deliriously confident, a tad unwieldy. When diagnosed with a processing disorder, Hart milks exasperation for a punchline about having academic herpes. He’s playing to the cheap seats. All around, Lee, Haddish, and Hart feel like they’re coasting. This is a quickie fall comedy. One could say that Night School feels choppy, or rushed, or slack, or whatever you wanna call it. It has moments of editorial awkwardness. There are flow issues. There’s a lack of big laughs. The flick just doesn’t come together in a way that would constitute an A. It’s not failing, but it’s hardly making honors. The Verdict: There’s this social norm of saying something is “fine.” It’s code. Manners in the face of something mediocre, or something you don’t hate, but certainly aren’t feeling either. This pre-made French onion dip at your football party is fine. The sound at this concert from the very back is fine. Night School is fine. If Malcolm D. Lee were a student, and we were to average his work: Girls Trip, that was great. Barbershop 3, that’s good as well. Night School is fine, forgivable in spite of inconsistencies and lack of any standout moments. Lee, Haddish, and Hart will have plenty of chances to fix their average. Where’s It Playing?: Wide as hell. Nearly 3,000 theaters on Friday the 28th. Trailer: Source
  9. DC is having a pretty hard time right now, huh? After greenlighting a glut of films since 2016 to fast-track the DCEU and directly compete with Marvel Studios’ long-gestating film universe, it’s been one blow after the next. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was rough. Suicide Squad might be the highest-grossing film to also become a national punchline before it even left theaters. Justice League had so much difficulty getting to the big screen in the first place that what made it to theaters was only a “movie” by the most charitable standards. Yet the forces of commerce press on, and so DC continues to confirm and half-confirm new franchise projects. And unlike the news through most of 2017, a few of these actually do appear to be coming together. Last week the first footage of Joaquin Phoenix’s new Joker was released, as was word of a Joker/Harley Quinn spin-off that sounds like a spectacularly bad decision even at the elevator pitch phase. One of the more promising, however, is Birds of Prey, one of the Harley-centric spin-offs put forth into the pre-production ether. A female-fronted ensemble feature, Birds of Prey will further open up DC’s heroine universe, which is a sound enough manuever given that Wonder Woman achieved far more goodwill than any other DC outing from this current wave. Now, the Birds have two of their key faces attached, as Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World) and Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Friday Night Lights) will respectively play Huntress and Black Canary, respectively. Alongside Margot Robbie, whose Harley Quinn has somehow managed to engender more franchise interest than Batman or Superman up to this point, Winstead and Smollett-Bell have a pretty decent shot at kicking off their own series in what currently looks like a DC film content vacuum. That is, if Warner Bros. and DC can get a movie not directed by Patty Jenkins across the finish line, anyway. Birds of Prey is currently slated to open on February 7, 2020. Source
  10. Metallica haven’t exactly been keen on their members branching out into new music projects, as evidenced by former bassist Jason Newsted’s desire to focus on his band Echobrain, which ultimately played a large part in his departure from the legendary metal group. However, in a new interview, guitarist Kirk Hammett says he’s sitting on a ton of solo material that he’d like release some day. “I have so much material sitting around that’s obviously not Metallica stuff, and that pile gets bigger and bigger,” Hammett told Metal Hammer. “One of these days when it feels right… I still feel I have so much to give Metallica. When that feels more complete, maybe I’ll think about doing that other stuff.” If and when that solo album appears, what should fans expect from the effort? Hammett says the type of music he would put on a solo album might surprise some fans. “It would not look like a metal album at all,” he said. “It’ll be something so weird and far-ranging in styles, but cohesive at the same time. I wouldn’t be surprised if all of us did some solo, independent, autonomous sort of thing. I think it’s healthy, and if anything, when you come back to the band you’d come back with more enthusiasm. It’d feel like going on a little camping trip, and it’s always good to come back home to a nice warm bed!” Switching gears to what the guitar means to him, Hammett says he can’t imagine his life without it. “I live for playing guitar, loud and aggressive,” he said. “There’s such a therapeutic effect that happens to me, and it fills a huge gaping hole in my soul. It’s been the case since day one, and it’s still improving. I still don’t feel I’ve hit the summit; I have a long musical road to discover and experience.” He added, “Musically I’m in the best place I’ve ever been, and I feel very fortunate. Some people peak right off the bat, then can’t pull off things they did when they were younger. I want to keep on going, never rest on my laurels, and always look forward.” Metallica recently announced that their “Worldwired Tour” will return to Europe in 2019 for a late spring and summer leg. 11. More than a year ago, Freddie Gibbs and Curren$y announced Fetti, a collaborative EP that was thought forgotten as the pair forged ahead on other projects. Gibbs dropped his Freddie mixtape this past June, while Curren$y shared an EP of his own, The Marina. Now, as Exclaim reports, the pair have confirmed that the project is not only finished, but will arrive this Halloween. Curren$y announced the project’s completion and release date via an Instagram video that finds him FaceTiming with Gibbs and hilariously razzing him for “singing” on the album. He also revealed that profile producer The Alchemist helmed his half of the EP. On Twitter, Gibbs shared a snippet of the project that features the pair delivering verses over a loop. 12. Mick Jenkins, the buzzy Chicago rapper who wowed with last year’s The Healing Component, is releasing a new album, Pieces of a Man, sometime this fall. We’ve previously heard singles like “Bruce Banner” and the Kaytranada-produced “What Am I to Do”; now Jenkins is back with another new song, “Elephant In the Room”. The tight, woozy beat sets a compellingly off-beat foundation for Jenkins’ rhythmic flow, which finds the rapper giving a “shoutout to feminists, the real ones,” adding that “all the others is enemies.” Hear it below. Jenkins has had a productive year. In addition to his singles, he’s released two entries attributed to his or more series, the anxious mixtape and the frustration EP. Source
  13. M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel have put out a fair amount of music together as She & Him since their 2013 full-length, Volume 3. There was their 2014 album of standards, Classics, and their second holiday collection, 2016’s A Christmas Party; recently, they shared a pair of mirror songs, “She Gives Her Love to Me” and “He Gives His Love to Me”, on the Universal Love compilation EP. Yet for all that music, there hasn’t been a She & Him show in five years. Well, get ready for an early Christmas present, because they’ve just announced their return to the stage with a trio of holiday concerts. Dubbed “A Very She & Him Christmas Party”, the three date are set to take place in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Austin this December. No doubt they’ll be playing songs from A Christmas Party and their first Yuletide collection, 2011’s A Very She & Him Christmas, but we wouldn’t be surprised if they had a few jolly surprises up their sleeves, either. Tickets go on sale via the She & Him website this Friday, September 28th, with $1 from every ticket going towards local food banks. Find the Christmas Party itinerary below. “A Very She & Him Christmas Party” 2018 Tour Dates: 12/06 – Los Angeles, CA @ The Wiltern 12/08 – San Francisco, CA @ Masonic 12/10 – Austin, TX @ ACL Live Revisit She & Him’s take on “Winter Wonderland” below. 14. You should get familiar with Grammy Award Winning/underground legend Bobby Raps. The St. Paul, MN artist dropped his latest single “cause im sad…” on Soundcloud last week. This song is a little teaser of his upcoming album “Weird Lil World” which is said to drop on October 1st. “cause im sad…” is a fast-tempo’ed, lyrically thoughtful track generating buzz online awaiting his album. Bobby Raps’ vocals ride a harmonious wave of melody and autotune, making the track a nostalgic ballad with straight bars. This song comes shortly after Young Thug’s Slime Language dropped, of which Bobby holds production credits on three of the tracks. Bobby RapsThe multifaceted rapper/producer was awarded a Grammy for his production on The Weeknd’s chart-topping album Starboy. Bobby’s talent as a genre-defying artist has helped him stay relevant in the underground and mainstream music scenes. 15. To coincide with the announcement that they’ll be supporting Metallica next year on a European trek, Ghost have unveiled the latest installment of their webisode series. In the amusing clip, dubbed “Chapter V: The Call”, the recently injured Sister Imperator and the elderly Papa Emeritus offer their opinion of the Omen movie franchise. Sister Imperator, who was involved in a serious car crash in the previous webisode, is seen in a hospital room, where she phones Papa, and the two begin to offer a critique about the Omen movies, agreeing that the first three movies are great except for the “shitty ending” of the third movie. Then they get into the fourth movie, drawing a parallel to Ghost’s own career. “And then there’s No. 4, which feels like an excuse to bring in a new director and try to get the ending right,” says Sister Imperator. To which Papa replies, “Whenever you have a new creative team, when you start episode four, you have to do a lot of rebuilding.” Of course, Ghost themselves have had to do a lot of rebuilding, revamping their lineup and introducing Cardinal Copia as the new frontman with the release of their fourth album, Prequelle, earlier this year. The phone call then changes direction suddenly, with Papa fantasizing about Sister Imperator. Watch the clip below: Ghost will be headlining tours of North America this fall and Europe in the late winter before heading out in support of Metallica next year. Upon entering the Montgomery County Correctional Facility, a fellow inmate greeted Cosby with a stale hotdog bun to the face. In a phone call to his wife Camille, Cosby recounted the hotdog incident and other events from his initial hours in prison, according to Radar Online. Cosby, who is legally blind, said he also fell down a flight of steps because he wasn’t being guided and was without his cane — which was apparently taken away by corrections officers over fears he might use it to harm himself. Cosby reportedly told his wife to “Grab the checkbook and hire anyone and everyone” who could get him out “as soon as possible.” Following yesterday’s sentencing, Cosby’s lawyers announced their intention to appeal, likening his case to the persecution of Jesus. 17. She teased it back in 2017 on an episode of HBO’s Girls. She debuted it briefly as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record on BBC Radio One. Now, finally, Robyn has released the title track to her forthcoming album, “Honey”. Robyn took so long to share “Honey” mainly because it was never finished. It took her realizing the song needed to be a pure club track for her to finally spear the white whale. “It’s not produced or written as a normal pop song,” Robyn explained in a press release. “It is totally based on this idea of club music… When you’re listening to club music, there’s no reward. The reward isn’t, ‘Oh, here’s the chorus, here’s the lyric that makes sense.’ You have to enjoy what it is. You have to enjoy that there’s no conclusion.” And, indeed, there isn’t really a conclusion to “Honey”. Its sweet notes pulse and beat in a swirl of ecstasy that never quite peeks, a tease that reflects lyrics like, “No, you’re not gonna get what you need/ But baby, I have what you want/ Come get your honey.” Take a listen below. 18. BadBadNotGood brought a lot of guest collaborators into the studio with them while recording their 2016 album IV. Apparently they didn’t get their fill of working with other artists, however, as they’ve steadily been releasing more collabs ever since. Last year saw them finish their “Confessions” trilogy alongside Colin Stetson with “Confessions Pt III”, as well as reunite with Future Islands frontman Samuel T. Herring for “I Don’t Know”. For the latest team up, they’ve called on Little Dragon for the new track “Tried”. The soulfully smooth composition is a perfect bed for Yukimi Nagano’s honeyed vocals to lay down over. 19. On September 23rd, Snoh Aalegra performed for all ages at Sonia in Cambridge. The crowd was small and so were the prices of the tickets. Here is why you should check this R&B beauty out before she gets big. Snoh Aalegra is a 31 year-old Swedish modern jazz artist. Her music has notes of the classic soulful pop-stars such as Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. She exudes classic throwback vibes, similar to how Amy Winehouse did. There is a somber romantic tone in her voice that is hauntingly old-school. The modern soul singer has collaborated with names like Vic Mensa and Logic to appeal to the modern jazz and rap community. Her song “Nothing Burns Like the Cold” featuring Vince Staples is her second most played song on Spotify. Aalegra and Staples in “Nothing Burns Like the Cold” videoOn the night of the concert, the crowd buzzed with anticipation under the blue pre-show lights. Mereba, an up-and-coming soul singer, guitar player, and rapper took the stage before Miss Aalegra. She performed her most popular single, “Black Truck,” along with some unreleased acoustics. With her keyboard player and guitarist (Sam) by her side, Mereba engaged the fans with an intimately endearing musical experience. MerebaIn between acts, supporting band members got their jitters out as the audience hooted in approval. The level of excitement contained in Sonia was undeniably electric. The lights went out as a sudden wave of silence swept across the venue. Aalegra’s title of her lastest album, “FEELS” was projected on to the backdrop of the stage in a bold yellow and black font. The band, consisting of Justin Deas, Egberto “Budda” Foster, Jacob Brody, and John Youngs, picked up again as the goddess herself walked towards the mic. Donned in a silky green dress with badass basketball sneakers, Snoh slayed the stage before a lyric escaped her mouth. The singer performed medleys of all the songs from her latest album and surprised the crowd with some never-before-heard tunes off her upcoming album. Aalegra also sang an ode to her faithful fans. 20. Blood Orange’s Charcoal Baby embraces the concept of being different. Originally released as an advance single from the group’s fourth studio album Negro Swan, Charcoal Baby surfaced as the band’s latest release since 2016. Both Charcoal Baby and another advance single, Jewelry, were released earlier this summer. The R&B group, led by singer Devante Hynes, emerged in 2009 and has since released four projects, including Coastal Grooves (2011), Cupid Deluxe (2013), Freetown Sound (2016) and Negro Swan (2018). Charcoal Baby begins with a serene and soulful vibe as its guitar and vintage electric drums prepare you for the first verse. The song’s smooth vocals then gently flow through you as Blood Orange sings, “When you wake up/It’s not the first thing that you want to know.” As the song slowly reveals its chorus, the oddly-tuned guitar strums cease as the base and drums elevate the chorus’ momentum. The pleasant transition also produces the lyrics, ” Can you still count / All of the reasons that you’re not alone?” The tuning of the guitar instantly distinguishes the track as it’s uniquely-manipulated strums accompany Charcoal Baby’s soulful 80s music vibes. In fact, while listening to the song, you’ll notice the guitar seems to be partially out of tune. But according to Hynes, this was intentional. Hynes explained the makings of that distinct sound in an interview with Pitchfork. “I put two different vinyl effects on it, warping at different speeds, so the guitar is, like, completely out of tune on the whole song, but the bass kind of keeps it locked in.” In the same interview, Hynes also explained his reasoning behind the Charcoal Baby’s vocals. “I wanted something that felt a bit more joyous for, quite simply, a celebration of black skin,” Hynes said. Thus, his following lyrics also seem to create a sense of relatability for anyone, who’s ever felt overlooked: “No one wants to be the odd one out at times/ No one wants to be the Negro Swan.” For anyone who’s ever felt excluded or systematically disadvantaged, the concept behind the “negro swan” grows substantially clearer as the chorus gently unfolds. This is the beauty of Charcoal Baby. It’s simple lyrics convey a message that can be applied to anything or anyone who doesn’t meet societal expectations. As for the overall project, you can now stream and enjoy all of Negro Swan’s 16 songs here! Keep up with Blood Orange’s moves on Instagram, Official Website, Spotify and iTunes! 21. It was revealed early last year that Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig and actress and producer Rashida Jones were dating, and today Us Weekly reports that the happy couple welcomed their first child this past summer. His name, E! News revealed, is Isaiah Jones Koenig, and he was apparently born on August 22nd, just a few weeks after Vampire Weekend’s excellent performance at this year’s Lollapalooza. (Read: Things Have Changed: Lollapalooza Festival Review 2018) Jones, if you’re unaware, is also the daughter of music producer Quincy Jones, and, good lord, we wish we could attend these family gatherings. Vampire Weekend’s forthcoming fourth album, one of our most anticipated of the fall, is reportedly finished and in the process of being mastered, but a title and release date remains elusive. Source
  22. Saves the Day will return with their first album in five years, 9, on October 26th via Equal Vision Records. The follow-up to their 2013 self-titled LP is described as an encapsulation of the band’s journey from founder Chris Conley’s perspective. Lead single “Rendezvous” saw Conley juxtaposing the basement shows of Saves the Day’s early years with the international acclaim they have today to express his gratitude. On new track “Kerouac & Cassady”, he looks forward as the band gets ready for yet another tour. (Read: The 100 Best Pop Punk Bands) A propulsive and unrelenting pop punk fist-pumper, “Kerouac & Cassady” takes listeners through a week on the road with Saves the Day. “Monday swing from a chandelier, peeling oranges, drinking American Beer/ Two floors down get caught in a revolving door,” Conley sings with the assurance of someone who actually experienced these things. “Sunday drive to the next airport, one oxblood boot on a black dashboard/ 20 years into a lifelong endless tour.” Take a listen via the lyric video below. 23. When Bad Wolves were set to record their now-omnipresent cover of The Cranberries’ “Zombie”, they had no clue the song would thrust them into the rock spotlight. In fact, “Zombie” was almost never released. As the story goes, Cranberries singer Dolores O’Riordan was set to sing on the cover, and when she unexpectedly passed away in January just hours before she was scheduled to hit the studio, the band shelved it. They eventually decided to release the song with proceeds benefiting O’Riordan’s children, and the rest is modern rock history. Now, “Zombie” is the only hard rock song of the year so far to go platinum, with Bad Wolves delivering $250,000 to O’Riordan’s children back in June. This past summer, the band embarked on a massive amphitheater tour with Five Finger Death Punch, Breaking Benjamin and Nothing More. “Zombie” appears on Bad Wolves’ debut album, Disobey, which came out this past May, and also features the current Top 10 single “Hear Me Now” (featuring Diamante). Singer Tommy Vext of Bad Wolves caught up with Heavy Consequence to discuss the band’s rise to the top of the charts with “Zombie”, his experience overcoming addiction, and how he uses music to turn negative situations into positive ones. Read the full interview with Vext below: On the whirlwind experience of this past year and Bad Wolves’ cover of the Cranberries’ “Zombie” taking off I think that for everyone in the band, it’s been an emotional roller-coaster. At first, we were thinking we were going into the studio to record “Zombie” with Dolores (O’Riordan), so we were on this real high and excited about that. It came down to the night before, and as everyone knows, she tragically passed away. So, it was this really tragic, sad situation, and the song almost didn’t come out. We were going to shelve the song, and then we talked with our label about releasing the song and donating all of the proceeds to Dolores’ children. So, we released the song as a tribute. We honestly had no idea what would happen. We didn’t know if anybody would care. The only reason we felt confident in our rendition of the song is because she loved it so much. It turned into this viral moment, and it’s been this crazy whirlwind ever since. We just wanted to do something good with the song. There’s so much negativity in this world, so we thought, “Let’s do something positive.” On “Zombie” recently going platinum These are things that for everyone in Bad Wolves are just surprising, because many of us come from an extreme metal background, so the idea of having a platinum record is not a goal. That’s something that only bands like Five Finger Death Punch, Metallica, Slipknot, Korn — those kinds of bands achieve. We never even dreamed of it. It feels good, because it feels like we were going to try to do something good with the song, and so many people supported it. It restores your faith in people. On Bad Wolves being co-managed by Zoltan Bathory of Five Finger Death Punch Zoltan and I have known each other for a long time. Everyone in our band has been in different bands that opened for Five Finger Death Punch. I played him some stuff about a year and a half ago and showed him one of our unreleased videos, and he was like, “These are all of my friends! When did you guys start a band with all of my friends?” Then he asked, “Who is managing you?” I said, “You are!” (Laughs) He and the Five Finger guys have been hugely helpful in giving us opportunities to go on these amphitheater and arena tours, which most new bands would never get. I think the creative direction is different having a manager who is also a successful artist, because we speak the same language. He understands how import it is to have integrity in your art, and he understands that we‘re going to be who we are and not change. On the experience of this past summer’s tour with Five Finger Death Punch, Breaking Benjamin and Nothing More It was like summer camp for rockers! I brought an actual Olympic gym on tour, and we set it up every morning, and you would see guys from all the bands working out on the gear. It was such a great tour. The vibes were so good, and the bands were so great. We were the new kids on the bock, and everybody embraced us. To me, it’s a no-brainer. We got lucky to be on this bill. Five Finger and Breaking Benjamin are two massive bands that definitely have huge hits, and the way they write those songs is inspiring for us. We would see everybody in the crowd singing ever word of their songs, and It’s crazy to see an amphitheater of people signing every word to every song. We would see that and think, “How can I do that?” On the story of Vext’s twin brother trying to kill him and how the incident inspired the song “Remember When” I think it’s important to talk about mental health issues and addiction, because those are key components in what happened in our relationship. I’ve been sober for nine years, and my brother never got it. He got himself into a bad situation in a bad way. It was a very harrowing experience. I don’t not love my brother. Even before these experiences ended up in songs, I was going around the country and telling my story at speaking engagements, and I got involved working at rehab centers and started sober companioning. I worked with a company that coupled me with people who were a little too famous to go to rehab, and I would go on tour with them or go to movie sets and was their counselor. So, I spent the last five years helping people stay sober in that first 30 to 60 days. Whether it’s the counseling or my music, when it comes down to the message, I thought having that out there that was more important than keeping it private. On whether any new music is in the works following the release of Bad Wolves’ debut album, Disobey, this past May We’re already six songs into the new record. We’re workaholics! I’m in Australia visiting my girlfriend, and some of the guys went into studio last week and sent me three of the six new songs. We’re go to head to Europe and the U.K. to tour and then have two weeks off. Then, we’ll go back into the studio in L.A. and do vocals and more instrumentals. Hopefully, a new album will be out by next summer. Our thanks to Tommy Vext for taking some time to speak with us. 24. Looks like San Francisco-based indie band Deerhoof are almost as big a fan of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining as we are — they’ve just announced the upcoming release of a new 7-inch vinyl inspired by the music featured in Kubrick’s spooky masterpiece. The EP, called Deerhoof Plays Music of The Shining, is slated for release October 26th courtesy of Famous Class records. The vinyl itself is designed to emulate the rug pattern from the infamous Room 237, with cover art that evokes Jack’s “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” typewriter mantra. Check out the art below. The band, per a press release, describes the album thusly: Deerhoof plays the music of the shining. Deerhoof plays the music of the shining. Deerhoof plays the music of the shining. Deerhoof plays the music of the shining. Deerhoof plays the music of the shining. Deerhoof plays the music of the shining. Deerhoof plays the music of the shining. Deerhoof plays the music of the shining. Ahead of the album’s release, Deerhoof have released their cover version of the Al Bowlly song “Midnight, the Stars and You”, notable for the film’s eerie ballroom dancing scene. It’s eerie and evocative, perfect for capturing the spirit of Jack Torrance’s descent into madness. Take a listen below. Deerhoof Plays Music Of The Shining by Deerhoof Source
