Neil Young and Daryl Hannah had love to burn over the weekend. According to the UK’s Mirror, the longtime couple reportedly got hitched in a small ceremony with close friends on Saturday in Atascadero, California, which followed an earlier ceremony off the Sun Juan islands aboard Young’s yacht. “Congrats N & D,” the administrator to Young’s blog wrote, prompting one fan to ask if it was legit, to which the site replied, “Several attendees at (the) reception yesterday in central CA area have confirmed. Described as a ‘shindig.’” Young’s guitarist Mark Miller seemingly confirmed the news on Facebook, writing: “Congratulations to Daryl Hannah and Neil Young on their wedding today,” even later adding: “I only knew about it because one of my friends attended the ceremony in Atascadero and announced it on his page.” If that weren’t enough, Hannah herself posted the following via Instagram: A little history: Young and Hannah have been dating since 2014, around the time that the great bard filed for divorce from Pegi Young, his wife of 36 years. Earlier this year, Hannah directed Young in the Netflix film, Paradox. Upcoming artist Beatrice premieres beatsy debut single ‘Grid’
News posted a topic in DJ Headquarters
Beatrice may not be a name you’re 100 per cent familiar with just yet, but let’s be honest, it’s one you’ll come to know quite well! Most notably of Haiku Hands fame, the artist has been slowly chipping away at projects and collaborations with the likes of Theo Parrish, Suzanne Ciani and a hell of a lot more but has finally released her debut single, and boy does it bang. Beatrice has really begun a spiral into creating a name for herself and her debut single Grid is the perfect springboard to push her into the future as a respected solo artist. The tune is an amalgamation of futuristic beats and chopped vocals, with an almost harsh electro nature that completes the overall sonic vibe. Accompanying the single is an out of this world animation from Berlin-based Aussie, Michael Tan, that gives you the feel of an abstract landscape, putting you just outside of real life nature. With a slew of upcoming dates supporting Willaris. K (check them out below) and a slot at BIGSOUND there’s no doubt that Beatrice is about to explode, so check out the video below and get ahead of the curve on this artist! Wilaris. Only 17 more sleepless nights until The 23rd run of Nocturnal Wonderland. With the changes made last year to the environment and number of attendees, we are highly curious to see what new additions will arrive this year at Insomniac’s longest running festival. Photo Credit – Nocturnal Wonderland With less than a month to go, it’s time to start planning your attack! Where, when and how will you be wiggling? Who’s sets are keeping you up at night thinking about? Check out the line up by stage below. Photo Credit – Nocturnal Wonderland Wolves’ Den has served as the main stage to Nocturnal Wonderland since its first appearance in 2016, taking place of the Queens Grounds stage. Photo Credit – Nocturnal Wonderland – Wolves Den Over the years Wolves Den has seen the sounds of many amazing artists, typically hosting big room and progressive house. This year the captivating stage will be home to Bijou, Habstrakt, Illenium, Slumberjack, Blackgummy, Deorro, Slushii, AC Slater, and more! Last year we had the opportunity of enjoying Mija, Excision, and Zomboy. Be sure to gather your pack and head to the Den to catch the hypnotizing display of LEDs and fireworks! Nocturnal Wonderland 2018 The Labyrinth Stage is known as a fan favorite dating as far back as 2010 with many upgrades along the way. Photo Credit – Nocturnal Wonderland – Labyrinth Hosting live electronic music and heavy bass over the years, this year we will see bangers from Eprom, Liquid Stranger, Dirt Monkey, Netsky, Kill the Noise, Space Jesus, Riot Ten, and more! Last year the stage resembled a nest, and saw the sounds of Autograf, Champagne Drip, Chet Porter, Goldfish, Keys N Krates, Phantoms, Trippy Turtle and more. Nocturnal Wonderland Sunken Garden’s vibe is like Neon Garden’s long lost family member with a touch of Upside Down House. Photo Credit – Nocturnal Wonderland – Sunken Garden Last year the stage design was impeccable, the light house design created by Drift created vibes like no other. The aero beacon and lasers shined far across the festival grounds from atop of the hill at Glen Helen. Paired with the sounds of This Ain’t Bristol, it was our favorite spot to be all weekend. The vibes that the stage brought were nothing short of absolute filth. This year we will noodle to deep and dirty beats from Dela Moontribe, Nora En Pure, Dateless, Lee Foss, Mikey Lion & Lee Reynolds, MK & more. Nocturnal Wonderland This year will be the first year without Temple Noctem, a stage that had typically been a hardstyle stage up until last year where we saw Electric Mantis, Just A Gent, Krane, Wuki and more. It was a beautifully created black lit atmosphere, with mushrooms and a stage that resembled a LED picture frame. Photo Credit – Nocturnal Wonderland – Temple Noctem You may recognize this next gem from EDC Las Vegas, Beyond Wonderland and Burning Man, and previous Nocturnal runs. The 1980’s ghetto blaster joined the Insomniac team in 2012 and has been bringing filth to events since. Last year the Boombox Art Car was hosted by Cat’s & Boot’s, this year we will see Fester, Oscar Da Grouch, Scooby, Subcoder, and more! Sean Penn is headed to Hulu, and like Arnold Schwarzenegger in Total Recall before him, he’ll be getting his ass to Mars. In what will mark Penn’s first time as a TV series regular, he’ll play the lead in The First, the new series from House of Cards creator Beau Willimon. The series’ first trailer introduces Penn’s Tom Hagerty, the leader of a five-person mission to establish the first-ever human colony on Mars. As the astronauts undergo the intensive training necessary to pilot and survive a mission of that length and nature, they struggle equally with the personal sacrifices demanded of such a mission. Despite the insistences of Natasha McElhone’s tech magnate, who’s convinced of the mission’s grandeur, the fear (and potential glory) of being the first manned mission to successfully reach the Red Planet is just too much to deny. Penn will draw a fair deal of attention to the series, but what’s perhaps even more intriguing is this being Willimon’s first project since his departure from Cards. The eight-episode season will premiere on Hulu on September 14th, so we won’t have to wait long to see if the streaming service will be able to muster another big hit to build on the momentum of The Handmaid’s Tale. “Nobody exists on purpose. Nobody belongs anywhere. We’re all going to die. Come watch TV.” Come 2020, we’ll have more TV to watch from the creatives behind that genius summation of existence, as Ricky and Morty co-creator/star Justin Roiland and writer/executive producer Mike McMahan have set a new series at Hulu. Entitled Solar Opposites, the animated comedy has been picked up for a two-season, 16-episode order. Solar Opposites centers on a family of aliens coming from a better world than Earth who are forced to take refuge in middle America. It’s pretty easy to see where the show’s commentary will come from, while the family members disagree on whether their new home is the best or just the worst. (Read: Top 25 TV Shows of 2017) Roiland and McMahan will write and executive produce the new show, while the former will again pull double duty as the voices of Terry and Korvo. Comedian Mary Mack and Sean Giambrone (The Goldbergs) are also part of the cast, respectively voicing Jesse and Yumyulack. 20th Century Fox Television is behind Solar Opposites, making it the studio’s first production for Hulu. Roiland and McMahan will have to split their time between the new show and Rick and Morty, as the latter was recently picked up for a stunning 70-episode renewal by Adult Swim, ensuring it will be on the air well into the 2020s. Last week, director Luca Guadagnino dropped the first trailer for his anticipated Suspiria remake, a movie he described to The Hollywood Reporter as “being immersed in a world of turmoil and uncompromising darkness.” Now, in anticipation of the film’s premiere at the Venice Film Festival later this week, he’s also released a short scene from the movie. In it, Tilda Swinton’s Madame Blanc asks a class of dancers to prepare for a new dance about rebirth, but tells Dakota Johnson’s Susie Bannion to “improvise freely.” This leads to some disturbing moves from Susie, whose shoulder blades look to be doing things that maybe shoulder blades shouldn’t be doing. Meanwhile, another older woman watches on, an impenetrable look of anticipation on her face. And then there’s that hand… Anyway, we won’t spoil it. Watch it below. Listen close, too, because near the end you can hear some eerie, ominous notes from Thom Yorke’s original score. Suspiria opens to the public on November 2nd. Source

Look, nobody likes missing out on a good metal show, but if it involves leaving an 11-year-old child at home alone for a couple of days, you might want to skip the concert — or at least bring the kid with you! According to the Houston Chronicle, Texas couple John Guerrero, 48, and Virginia Yearnd, 39, were arrested Monday night (August 27th) after abandoning their 11-year-old daughter at home last Wednesday and driving all the way to Detroit to see veteran industrial metal act Godflesh. The girl’s great aunt notified authorities upon finding out the youngster was left home alone. Deputies then went to the house, where they found the girl trying to cook herself a meal. Yearnd fessed up to going to see Godflesh in Detroit after initially telling authorities she and Guerrero were one state over in Louisiana. According to the Detroit Metro Times, Yearnd insisted that she asked her sister to check in on her daughter, but the child said no such arrangement was made. Godflesh, a UK act who rarely perform in the U.S., were only playing a handful of stateside shows this summer following their gig at the Psycho Las Vegas festival. The brief trek wrapped up this past Saturday in New York. Guerrero and Yearnd were booked on second degree child endangerment charges, and each faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted. If those Young Cardi memes prove anything, it’s that Cardi B has flaunted a colorful, larger-than-life personality since she could walk. That boldness shines throughout her breakthrough debut, Invasion of Privacy, and now it appears she’ll be sharing some of it on TV, too. The Bronx-born artist is set to appear in multiple skits on Off the Rip, an upcoming sketch comedy show from Wild ‘N Out star Rip Michaels. One of those skips is called “Real Housewives of the Civil Rights” and sees Cardi playing the role of Coretta Scott King, wife of Martin Luther King Jr. A riff on Bravo’s popular Housewives series franchise, the segment features Cardi’s King character hanging out with “Rosa Parks” and the “wives” of Jesse Jackson and Malcolm X. There’s also a woman described as the “Iggy Azalea” of the Civil Rights Movement. Together, they all gossip about MLK, including his many so-called mistresses, at which point Cardi says, “All these hussies wanna sleep with my huuusband!” Apparently the theme music for this skit is “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton, which might actually be the best part of the whole thing. Watch it below via TMZ. Not surprisingly, the skit hasn’t been received well by MLK’s family. Dr. Bernice King, the youngest of MLK and Coretta Scott King’s children, has harshly criticized the segment, calling her mother’s portrayal “repulsive” and “false.” She also said the skit’s release is poorly timed — today marks the 55th anniversary of MLK’s March on Washington and “I Have a Dream” speech. According to TMZ, she would like to have a “face-to-face” talk with Cardi about the skit. Update: According to King, Cardi already reached out “apologizing for the skit.” Off the Rip is believed to be airing on MTV (longtime home of Wild ‘N Out), though a timeline for its premiere has yet to be revealed. In addition to the “Housewives” skit, Cardi is also expected to partake in one called “How to Treat a Man Wrong” and “Ho Etiquette”, the latter of which has already received some backlash for its racist jokes. There’s also one about Cardi and Nicki Minaj’s longstanding beef. At least some of these were supposedly filmed three years ago. “You’re going to see Cardi B in a whole new light,” Michaels told Page Six last week of the show. “When I tell you, Off the Rip, we touch on everything. There is no sacred cows. We touched on Nicki Beef, we touched on 50 Cent, we touched on a whole bunch of people that you just wouldn’t expect us to talk to. We gon’ need bodyguards after this show.” Over the weekend, Cardi made her live comeback, making a surprise cameo during Migos’ concert at Madison Square Garden. She also recently released the music video for her Kehlani collaboration, “Ring”. There’s already a bit of an aura of mystery surrounding Vox Lux, Brady Corbet’s second directorial feature. Corbet, who you may remember best as the co-lead of Michael Haneke’s English language remake of Funny Games, has assembled a curious array of talents for this “twenty-first century portrait” of a rising pop star (Natalie Portman), who suddenly finds herself catapulted into the spotlight by chance. The first teaser, released in advance of the film’s premiere next week at the Venice Film Festival (and then at the Toronto International Film Festival a few days later), maintains the mystery, simply focusing on Portman’s decked-out performer as she prepares to take center stage. However, it does at least appear offer a first glance at Scott Walker’s original score for the film, and the promise of original material from Sia to come as well. Co-starring Jude Law, Jennifer Ehle, and Stacy Martin, Vox Lux will premiere next week, and stay tuned to CoS for our review of the film from this year’s TIFF. Source

The annual tribute to late Ramones guitarist Johnny Ramone took place on Sunday (August 26th) at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, and this year’s ceremony featured some extra star power. Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan, Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones and Portlandia star Fred Armisen were on hand to perform an acoustic set of Ramones classics. According to Forbes magazine, Morrissey and artist Shepard Fairey were among the attendees at the event, which was co-organized by Johnny’s widow, Linda Ramone. After the acoustic set, Armstrong shared his thoughts on the Ramones with Forbes, saying, “They seemed like a family, with the name and a gang or something like the Del-Lords or some kind of New York bunch of barbarians that could wield around a baseball bat. They’re known, just the leather jackets, the jeans and the thing I liked about them is they didn’t really play up the fashionable English mohawk punk. They were very American and very Americana. They got what the aesthetic was, especially for Johnny, who was a very proud American. So that sort of symbolized the Ramones.” The set featured the all-star musicians playing such Ramones songs as “Rockaway Beach”, “Judy Is a Punk” and more. They also performed a rendition of the Sex Pistols’ “Pretty Vacant”. Watch in the clips below. Source

Mark Tremonti is one of the hardest-working musicians in rock, as guitarist of Alter Bridge and frontman of his namesake band Tremonti, not to mention a member of the currently inactive multiplatinum group Creed. His most recent release is the Tremonti album A Dying Machine, a fascinating concept disc that centers on artificial intelligence and is accompanied by a novel of the same name co-authored by Tremonti himself. After having the honor of opening for Iron Maiden on the legendary metal band’s summer European tour, Tremonti will embark on a fall U.S. tour beginning September 13th in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and running through a November 12th show in Nashville, Tennessee. Heavy Consequence caught up with the singer-guitarist to talk about A Dying Machine and his feelings on the future of artificial intelligence. As a huge fan of classic metal, Tremonti also discussed touring with Iron Maiden and offered his thoughts on Slayer embarking their final tour. Finally, with singer Myles Kennedy about to tour with Slash, and the band Tremonti heading out on the aforementioned fall trek of their own, we wondered what was next for Alter Bridge. Tremonti told us when we can expect a new studio album from Alter Bridge, while also discussing the band’s upcoming live release, Live at the Royal Albert Hall, which arrives September 7th. Read our interview with Mark Tremonti below: On his prolific output with Alter Bridge and Tremonti, churning out seven albums already this decade I think it’s just not ever putting it down and always forging ahead, and not getting caught behind the 8 ball when it’s time to hit the studio and be prepared. It’s just what I love to do. It’s not something where I say, “Hey, I’ve gotta get some work done.” For me, it’s hard to take the guitar out of my hand and not get work done, so it’s something I enjoy — just like I did when I was a kid. On conceiving the ambitious concept album ‘A Dying Machine’, and its accompanying novel Well, I was on tour in Hungary and about to go onstage — I had about 20 minutes until stage time — and I sat down with my guitar. I started playing a chord progression and singing over it, and the words “you’re a dying machine” came out. Within that 20 minutes, I wrote three of the parts for that song. A story developed in my head about a conversation between a man and this being that was created to love him, and doesn’t know anything else but to love him. As the years go by she obsesses; she’s stronger than him and going to live longer than him. In the end, it turns out…it’s not a good ending for him. Anyway, once I looked at that story I figured that I was having so much fun with that plot, I tried to open my mind and see if I could continue on that plot. I had fun with it, and then I decided that maybe I’d do three or four song concept record within a record. Once I got those songs done, I thought I’d see it through to the end. People have asked me throughout my career, “Is this a concept record? Is that a concept record,” and it’s always been “no.” I’ve never really had any interest in it until I wrote the song “A Dying Machine.” Once the record was almost finished, I said, “You know what, I’ve got this book idea, and I want to get a book published one day.” I’ve always been a massive reader and I thought it would be a huge accomplishment. I thought, “If I’m going to do it, I’ll try to do it now.” I decided to put the novel together to accompany the album. On how the title track relates to the novel’s characters Brandon, the human male, and Stella, the artificial female Well, that story — those lyrics — kind of come later on in the book, maybe halfway to three quarters into the book. There was a man who lost his wife, and he was a prominent architect and a very successful guy — but when he lost his wife he pretty much lost everything. He lost all his work and just became depressed and couldn’t get back on his feet. Then, this new technology came out where you could make the first organic re-grown human brain. Along the way there’s no liver transplants, because the technology can take your DNA and your blood type and create a liver for you, so there’s no more people dying from being able to not get a liver. So soon after that you get a heart and lungs and all of these things, and eventually you get a human brain where you build a human body from the ground up. The governments can release these vessels. It gives him hope and the whole world signs up for this lottery, and he wins this lottery out of billions and billions and billions of people who bought tickets to this lottery. Stella is his creation and she ends up being the most beautiful thing anybody has ever seen, and he’s perfectly happy with her for three to four years. Then, just because she was designed to be just about him and obsess about him, she’s relentless. If she sees him talking to another woman, she’ll get violent toward her. It snowballs where it kinda gets worse and worse, and the lyrics are at the point where he’s kind of at his wits end with how she is and he wants her gone. She doesn’t understand…all she knows is love for him. It’s this kind of twisted love story about this man who’s afraid of this being who’s created for him and her just being — almost no matter what he does — loving… almost like a puppy dog! On the album’s first single “Take You With Me” That one was a song I almost left off the record because some of the songs that I wrote before the title track “A Dying Machine,” I had to fit into a storyline as best as I could. So if it wasn’t on the record, it wouldn’t really change the plot too much. The way I fit it into the story is a scene where the main aggressive character in the book who starts his rebellion. He falls in love with Stella, this main character, and he’s kind of telling her, “Don’t be ashamed of what you aren’t proud of and what you are, follow me, and I’ll show you the way here.” So, he’s kind of obsessed with her and doing his best to win her over. On evolving as a singer, and taking more vocal risks on this album I think the biggest risks I took on this record were doing a couple falsetto things. I never felt like I could pull off the falsetto thing, especially when I’m in a band [Alter Bridge] with Myles Kennedy. It’s something that I’ve tried to work with. It’s one thing doing it in a studio and another doing it at home, but sometimes when you get out there live I just push through that falsetto and do it full voice instead. I just wanted to create some more dynamics overall with the songs by messing with your voice as much as you can and experimenting with it — it helps. A lot of times, people are kind of embarrassed of their own talking voice, so I’ve developed this way — especially live — of kind of sounding like somebody else. I feel more confident because I kind of get into character. But on this record there are certain songs, like “The First, The Last” or “Desolation” or “Trust”, where I sing in my lower register, and I’ve always been kind of weary of doing that because it’s your talking voice — you sound like yourself, and my producer kind of gave me the confidence. He really digs when I sing in that register, and finally I just kind of went with it. On his personal feelings about the future of humans’ relationships with artificial beings I definitely think it’s going to be more and more prevalent. Even nowadays with Alexa in everybody’s homes and Siri on your phone… there are going to be more and more machines and artificial intelligence that take human jobs away. I think there’s going to be a learning curve when it comes to how we’re going to deal with that kind of thing once we do create it. You know, there’s going to be robots first where it’s just kind of fun and kind of a circus act, but eventually it’s going to be… with technology getting more and more advanced — and same with medicine — I think even 30 years from now it’s going to be a completely different world than it is now. I don’t think it’s far off in the distance that the topics in this book will become a reality. When I was putting the book together with John Shirley, the guy I co-wrote this with, he was an expert in where technology’s going. He goes to Brussels to do the TED Talks about singularity, technology, and where it’s going. So, when I explained certain points in the book, he would make it plausible by saying, “This is technology that works right now. It’s maybe 20 years out before it’s applied.” He had a good vision for how to make this story seem like it could be a reality. On the group Tremonti being more of his metal outlet than his other bands When I played some of the riffs for the guys in Alter Bridge and Creed over the years, there were dozens of them that I’d always play and they’d always be like, “Ah, that’s too metal.” I’d play it again, and again, and again, trying to convince them or fool them that they hadn’t yet heard it. They would just kind of not dig it. So when I did the first [Tremonti] record, I took all those favorite riffs that just kind of never connected and put them on the album. Ever since then, it’s pretty much no holds barred when it comes to it. I can go as heavy and fast as I want. It’s really just kind of liberating to be able to do that. In Creed and Alter Bridge, a big part of who I am doesn’t really show itself. I became a music fan because of speed metal, and such a big part of my playing is being able to use it. On recently opening for Iron Maiden in Europe It’s crazy. You pinch yourself every day. My first concert ever as a kid was Iron Maiden, so being able to open up for them is just nuts. It’s just crazy how many people go and consistently see Iron Maiden. It’s just such a huge part of what metal guys and hard rock guys grew up on. To get the nod, to hear them say, “You are worthy to open up for us,” is just a dream come true. On his personal favorite Iron Maiden experience It was the Seventh Son of a Seventh Son tour, and “Can I Play with Madness” was the big video on MTV at the time. It was great to be able to go see that in person. Little did I know that they put on such a great production compared to other bands. I thought that every band did something like that — had big monsters walking across the stage, sword fights… even now, today, the production is crazy. It’s over the top, and people love it. On Slayer embarking on their final world tour Hopefully, it’s just one of those things where they say it’s their last tour and take five years off and then say, “You know what, let’s go out and do some shows.” That might happen. Yeah, but, Slayer’s Reign in Blood is definitely one of my top three records of all time. I think if I had to choose a record with the best guitar riffs, with my favorite guitar riffs in one record, it’d be that record. Back when I was growing up, it was just dangerous. It was the heaviest thing you could get your hands on. I absolutely loved it. I remember the very first time I went to go see them live… it was pretty surreal. I’ve seen them probably 30 times now, and it never gets old. On plans for the next Alter Bridge studio album, as well as his thoughts on the band’s new live release Late next year we’re going to have another [new Alter Bridge] record out. The most exciting thing we have going on in the Alter Bridge world right now is the Live at the Royal Albert Hall DVD coming out in September. I think we all think this is the best thing we’ve ever had. Out of any of our records or live DVDs, I think this is our favorite product, if you will. When I have grandkids I’m gonna say, “Here’s what your grandpa did,” you know? It’s one of those things. So we’re excited to release that. From start to finish, it was a magical night for us. When we were doing rehearsals, we figured we kind of had days to go through this stuff, but everything took so long that we only got through each song one time. There was so much pressure, there was a lot of pressure on that show. Once we got through the first 45 minutes of the show and got loosened up, it turned into magic for us. We were so happy with how it sounded and turned out. When we played the second night, every one of us agreed that it was the most fun night we’d ever had onstage and I’m glad we got to capture it. Our thanks to Mark Tremonti for taking the time to speak with us. Tremont’s A Dying Machine album and accompanying novel can be purchased here, while dates and tickets for Tremonti’s upcoming tour dates can be found here. Meanwhile, Alter Bridge’s Live at the Royal Albert Hall is available for pre-order via several outlets at this location. Source

King Krule’s spent a good bulk of 2018 touring in support of last year’s Mercury Prize-nominated The OOZ. Now, the English ginger returns with a new visual for the album’s bluesy, futuristic opener, “Biscuit Town”. Directed by Paraic and Michael Morrissey, who direct under the name cc. WADE, the clip finds frontman Archy Marshall adopting the role of a shadowy, self-destructive noir protagonist against a town made entirely from cardboard. Meanwhile, distant bodies swim in a sky that’s also an ocean. (Read: The Cinematic World of King Krule) The video comes as part of a three-part collaboration with WeTransfer, who also conducted a lengthy interview with Marshall and the directors. The Morrisey siblings cite influences like Ralph Bakshi and Fritz the Cat, while Marshall praises the way the video reflects the song’s atmosphere. “There’s a bit of neuroses to the video,” he said. “There is an air or an atmosphere of neuroses that matches the song. The moment the camera moves from the room to the bar is almost like a flashback, it’s like the lyrics in that sense. It’s just a stream of consciousness.” Watch it below. The Ooz, one of our Top 50 Albums of 2017, follows 2013’s 6 Feet Beneath the Moon. The prolific artist has stayed busy of late with a guest appearance on Mount Kimbie’s new record and a spat of releases under a variety of different aliases, including A New Place 2 Drown, The Return of Pimp Shrimp, and a 2015 album under his own name. This is just speculation, but we’re likely to hear more new music from him soon. Source

During an interview on a Houston radio station earlier this month, Robert Glasper aired a long list of grievances and allegations against Ms. Lauryn Hill. Glasper, a Grammy-winning jazz and R&B artist who’s worked with the likes of Kanye West and Common, accused Hill of stealing music for her groundbreaking 1998 album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, and frequently mistreating her band members. Now, in a lengthy statement posted on Medium, Hill has addressed the allegations and concerns brought up by Glasper. Throughout her message, Hill repeatedly maintains that she didn’t mistreat the musicians she hired — only that she demanded their best so that she could put out her best. “I’m definitely looking for something specific in musicians, and I absolutely do hire the best musicians I can find,” writes Hill. “Not every band had that particular ‘something’ I was looking for. That doesn’t make them bad musicians, just different than what I needed in that particular moment.” “When you’re a popular artist or public figure, people can sometimes forget that you’re hiring them to perform a service, and that you’re not the one there to entertain THEM,” she adds. “I didn’t scream or yell. Maybe I didn’t provide the experience that a musician may have wanted or expected during that time, but I was straight-forward, direct, and about the business at hand.” Regarding that “experience,” Hill admits that she perhaps “may not have established the necessary boundaries” with those musicians when recording Miseducation as it was her first time working with musicians outside of the Fugees. Hill never outright denies the accusations about stealing music, simply writing: “I’m confused as to why such a principled musician, who thought I ‘stole’ from his friends, would show up to work for me anyway.” She dismisses Glasper’s statements against her as “arrogant” and “presumptuous,” adding, “The arrogance of presumption that allows someone to think that they could have all the facts about another person’s life and experience, is truly and remarkably… presumptuous.” In further defense of her interactions with her musicians, Hill claims, “No matter how incredible the musicians who play with me are, MY name is on the marquee. The expectation to make it all come together is on me. The risk and the financial losses are on me. Hence, MY VIBE, though not the only consideration, is the priority.” She indirectly calls out Glasper again, continuing, “Few people actually know what this road is like, but many want to judge and comment, having never done it. Try doing what I’ve done yourself. If nothing else, you will gain some insight into and respect for my process.” Read Hill’s full statement here. Over the weekend, a host of sexual abuse allegations were levied against three members of The Orwells in an extensive Reddit post. In the collection of texts, photos, and first-hand accounts, Mario Cuomo, Henry Brinner, and Grant Brinner have been accused of a disturbing range of actions including rape, sexual abuse, sexual interactions with underaged girls, sending unsolicited nudes and videos, and sexual manipulation. On top of that, Cuomo in particular has been called out for homophobic and transphobic behavior, as well as aggressive altercations with fans and venue staff. In response, The Orwells have canceled their November 23rd concert at the Metro in their Chicago hometown. They’ve also issued a statement denying what they call “these baseless allegations brought as a personal attack against us.” “While callow altercations and vulgar language we’ve used in the past must be recognized and owned up to, the accusations of sexual assault are completely unfounded,” they continue. “No member of this band has ever acted without consent or maliciously taken advantage of anyone.” Read the full statement below, and find the full breadth of the allegations via Reddit. “It’s come to our attention that certain allegations of abuse have been made against one or more of us on social media and in social circles of Chicago. We’d like to first state that sexual abuse in any form is abhorrent. We do not take these accusations lightly and consider this matter incredibly serious. We emphatically deny these baseless allegations brought as a personal attack against us. While callow altercations and vulgar language we’ve used in the past must be recognized and owned up to, the accusations of sexual assault are completely unfounded. No member of this band has ever acted without consent or maliciously taken advantage of anyone. We encourage anyone who’s been affected by sexual abuse to speak up and make their abusers known; however we also encourage everyone to be cautious of the things they read and say on the Internet. No victim of abuse should be hesitant to make their voice heard and if someone does feel that we’ve hurt them, we encourage them to contact us properly and privately (not via social media or anonymously), as to respect their identity. Sincerely, Matt, Mario, Dominic, Henry, and Grant The Orwells” Out of respect to our friends at the Metro we will be cancelling our November show. All ticket buyers will be refunded immediately. — The Orwells (@TheOrwells) August 27, 2018 Editor’s Note: Consequence of Sound has begun its own independent investigation on the claims against The Orwells. Kyle Watson has just released his huge debut LP chock full of bangers, house and venturing into some more experimental electronic. Released through This Ain’t Bristol and Late Nite Business, Into The Morning sees Watson leave some of his safe zones and push through some of the genres that have defined him as an artist thus far. As arguably South Africa’s biggest house export, our boy Hood Rich got to pick his brains about the album and the tech behind it. Check it out below and listen to his full album here to get a feel for what they’re talking about! Hood Rich: Huge vibes on Into The Morning, did you set out with the goal to write an album or was the process more organic? Kyle Watson: Absolutely, I made a decision to write the album and right from the start I knew what I wanted to achieve with it. I think it was a good way to approach it, instead of just putting 10 tracks together that were laying around and call it an album, I could actually conceptualise more and structure it the way I wanted it to flow. HR: What is your most memorable moment from writing the album? KW: I think probably the vocal session with Elisha James. We worked on a track called July, and when he came in to record his vocals he smashed almost all of them in a single take from the start of the track to the finish. That’s never happened to me before. HR: There’s a couple “non-house” songs on the album, are you going to be releasing similar material in the future? KW: I’m definitely still keeping with the house direction. Into The Morning is meant as a vehicle to showcase that I can do more than write house music, so it was a great opportunity for me to package that into one project. I’ve experimented a little in some other genres since the album, but the primary direction for now is definitely still 4/4. HR: When I first started listening to your records around 2010 your music was entrenched in the wonky fidget house sound; what are some GOAT records from that era which are still cool AF for you? KW: Loads! Bart B More’s remix of Walking Down The Street, Switch – A Bit Patchy & This Is Sick are all still incredible records. Believe it or not I’ve been dropping Mowgli – Party Boppa in a couple of sets lately and it still works! HR: You’ve been spending a bit of time in America this year, has there been much difference between your shows in the states & the rest of the world? KW: The US has been an incredible territory to start touring in. I debuted there in March this year and every time I’ve gone back the shows are all incredible to play. Maybe it’s been the cities & venues that I’ve played in but it really feels like everyone is out there at the party for the right reason. The level of appreciation is off the charts, so I can’t wait to tour the album there in October. HR: You’re due back to Australia soon, is there anything you’re looking forward to doing outside of the gigs? KW: The food man, ah the food… I don’t know if you guys all go to like some secret cooking school or something but Australia has the best food! HR: What electronic artists are a source of inspiration for you at the minute? KW: SG Lewis, Flume (as always), Lane 8. I’ve actually been listening to old Missy Elliott records lately and the production on those have been inspiring my drums. HR: Do you have any recommendations for someone travelling to Johannesburg? KW: Yeah, go do a tour of the inner city and the Maboneng precinct! Loads of culture around that area, then head out to Maropeng and the Cradle of Humankind. HR: Have you seen any DJ sets in the last few years which has really left an impression? KW: Honestly, I think Billy Kenny is an incredible DJ. Especially from a technical point of view, I’ve seen a few of his sets lately and they always impress me. HR: I recently read that you’re a fan of pizza, throughout your travels where have you picked up the best slice? KW: Yeah I love pizza! My wife isn’t a massive fan though so it can be tricky convincing her that it’s on the menu haha! I’d say my favourite deep pan is from the UK and the best thin base I’ve had is actually in South Africa. But I still have to visit Italy, so that might change! Next time I’m in the US I’ll have to call up Justin Martin so he can take me out for pizza, he’s the pizza don. HR: What’s the first thing you do to relax once you get home from touring overseas? KW: I try to do as little as possible so that I can recharge. Touring is exhausting, especially since I’m from South Africa which is miles away from the countries I generally tour. It can be difficult getting back into the groove. TECH TALK HR: Could you share with us your creative process for the first hour when starting a new record? KW: I can spend the first few hours just working on a drum loop. I try to guide the direction of my track with the drums and bass mix, so once I lock those down and I’m happy with it then the rest of the production process flows a little easier. HR: What are two lesser known plugins you can’t work without and how do you use them? KW: I use StereoSavage all the time to widen things up, especially crunchy shaker loops and textures. I have also been using Soundtoys Radiator and Waves Saphira to thicken my sounds up. HR: If you could send one production tip to yourself 5 years ago, what would it be? KW: Keep it simple. I spent a lot of time in my early career just adding more and more sounds into my productions and using a ton of synths, but in the last few years I really started focusing on ‘less is more’ You can peep his whole album below and pick up a copy here, so check it out and tell us what you think! Louis C.K. made an unannounced appearance at the Comedy Cellar in New York City on Sunday night, marking the disgraced comedian’s first public appearance since admitting to sexual misconduct last November, according to the New York Times. Noam Dworman, the owner of the Cellar, told the Times that Louis C.K. performed a 15-minute set during which he touched on “typical Louis C.K. stuff,” including racism, waitresses, tips, and parades. He did not, however, mention the events that led to his exodus from the comedy word. Dworman added that Louis C.K. “was very relaxed,” and the small audience greeted him with an ovation prior to the start of his set. In a New York Times article published in November 2017, five women accused Louis C.K. of sexual misconduct. All five of his accusers worked with Louis C.K. in some capacity, whether as aspiring comedians or on the sets of TV shows. They all made similar allegations against Louis C.K, detailing incidents in which he asked to masturbate in front of them — or physically did so without their consent. Louis C.K. subsequently acknowledged that these allegations were true and apologized for his actions. As a result of Louis C.K.’s admission, both HBO and FX ended their working relationships with the comedian. Additionally, the release of his movie, Love You, Daddy, was canceled. Source

Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald and his former protege, Kesha. have been embroiled in legal battles since 2014, when the latter accused the former of physical and sexual abuse. Currently, Dr. Luke is pursuing a defamation suit against the singer, one that’s also roped in Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, whom Kesha alleged Dr. Luke had also raped. Now, new deposition excerpts unsealed as part of the suit reveal Perry denied the allegations in court, testifying that she was never assaulted or engaged in a romantic relationship with Dr. Luke. Meanwhile, in a separate deposition partially released on Monday, Lady Gaga testified that it wasn’t Kesha who told her about the Katy Perry allegation, but rather Interscope CEO John Janick. The testimony slightly contradicts the claim in Dr. Luke’s suit, with Gaga saying that she was with Kesha when Janick made the allegation, rather than Kesha texting her Janick’s secondhand account. Other documents appear to support Dr. Luke’s defamation case. A Sunshine Sachs press plan dated October 10th, 2014 reveals that the publicity firm sought to “[incite] a deluge of negative media attention and public pressure” on Dr. Luke in an effort to extricate Kesha from the pair’s contracted relationship. Later, the document discusses disclosing the lawsuit to TMZ while also manipulating the press to “ensure our story is being told as completely and as favorably for Client K [Kesha] as possible.” Dr. Luke’s team also shared e-mails allegedly exchanged between Kesha’s managers, Jack Rovner and Ken Levitan, and veteran music executive Irving Azoff. The e-mails find the trio discussing their intentions in regards to defamation, with Rovner saying they’d “battle [Gottwald] in the press” and “take down his business.” Azoff, meanwhile, promises he “will ruin him.” Dr. Luke’s attorneys also offered an account of the alleged incident from the producer’s perspective: “Kesha and Dr. Luke each attended a birthday party for Nicky Hilton at a nightclub in Hollywood, followed by an after-party at Paris Hilton’s home. Kesha admits she voluntarily had at least four drinks while partying. Because she drank too much, she got sick, and threw up in Paris Hilton’s closet. Kesha was kicked out of the after-party because of her behavior. Dr. Luke was asked to help bring Kesha out of the party. As an act of kindness and to help Kesha, since Kesha had just vomited and was intoxicated, he escorted her out and offered to allow her to sleep in his hotel suite, which was only a few blocks away. Kesha slept on the bed in the hotel suite, while Dr. Luke separately slept on the couch. Dr. Luke testified, under oath and in great detail, that he did not have any sexual or physical contact with Kesha. Kesha herself now testifies that she has absolutely no memory of engaging in any sexual activity with Dr. Luke or even of Dr. Luke being in the hotel room that night. Kesha has no memory of Dr. Luke engaging in inappropriate contact because it did not happen. In her bogus Complaint against Dr. Luke, Kesha falsely claimed that Dr. Luke gave her a so-called “sober pill” supposedly causing her to ‘black-out’. She also claimed she told her mother about allegedly being drugged right away, in 2005. Her mother, however, testified Kesha did not tell her about any supposed ‘sober pills’ until 2013/2014. That was when Kesha had begun plotting the press plan and lawsuit and threatening Dr. Luke to go public with her false rape allegations. Dr. Luke testified that he did not give Kesha any kind of drug that night. The next day, Dr. Luke woke up on the couch and left the hotel suite, while Kesha kept sleeping on the bed. After waking up, Kesha spent hours in the hotel suite and even ordered room service. Other critical documents and testimony remain under seal at Kesha’s insistence. When released, they will further reveal the fiction that Kesha created.” Added Dr. Luke’s lawyers: “The false narrative Kesha created about being raped became widely accepted, damaging Dr. Luke’s reputation irreparably. There is nothing worse than abuse and sexual assault. Dr. Luke supports any woman or man who seeks to address sexual abuse in the legal system. That is not what happened here. It is also horrendous to falsely accuse someone of a heinous act.” In response, lawyers for Kesha issued a lengthy statement of their own, which included Kesha’s own account of the evening in question: “Kesha’s experience as a victim of abuse, as reflected in the evidence that was unsealed earlier today, will be all-too-familiar to many women around the country. Kesha testified that on October 5, 2005, a few days after she signed an exclusive contract with Dr. Luke’s music-production company, a then-32-year-old Dr. Luke attended a nightclub party in Los Angeles with an 18-year-old Kesha. Kesha testified that when she told Dr. Luke that she felt nauseous after two glasses of champagne, Kesha testified that he gave her a ‘sober pill’ that Kesha took because she thought it would make her feel better. Kesha’s and Dr. Luke’s testimony show that after Kesha vomited at an after-party, Dr. Luke took Kesha to his hotel room, where she woke up the next morning alone, naked, vomiting, and painfully sore like she had sex without lubrication. Sworn testimony and contemporaneous phone records show that Kesha immediately reported the incident to her close friend and mother (with frantic phone calls from her mother trying to find her), and later sought professional help from medical providers. Kesha’s decision to not report to law enforcement is unfortunately very common. Notably, Kesha is not alone in her inability to work with Dr. Luke. Kelly Clarkson testified that Dr. Luke can be a ‘bully and demeaning,’ with her record label acknowledging internally that ‘almost every female [at the label] doesn’t like working with’ him. Similarly, Avril Lavigne and Pink have submitted sworn statements that there are reasons other than Kesha’s abuse allegations why they haven’t worked with Dr. Luke in recent years.” Kesha is facing a $50 million defamation lawsuit from Dr. Luke. Thus far, her legal efforts to end her contract with Dr. Luke have failed, as the court denied both Kesha’s request for an injunction that would have allowed her to sign with a new record label, as well as Kesha’s counter lawsuit against Dr. Luke. In the latter case, an appeals determined Kesha’s request was “devoid of merit.” Source

It’s been a loud, expensive summer. Box office records were demolished alongside entire cities, would-be hopefuls failed to take flight, and a Singapore family full of drama and a giant shark took over the final weeks of the year’s laziest days. 2018 saw Hollywood embrace old styles anew, from the unabashed romantic comedy to the winkingly in-on-it B-movie, and we wound up having a hell of a lot more moviegoing fun than we have in recent summers. This isn’t to say that the upcoming slate of year-end releases won’t yield some fun along the way, but let’s be honest. It’s about to be Oscar time, and Oscar time means that some of the best filmmakers working today are on the way with new and challenging material that we’ll surely be having Twitter scrapes over for the next six months. Long-gestating projects butt up against new voices, recent contenders look to return strong with promising follow-ups, and at least one of those James Cameron movies that we all just sort of assumed had disappeared is actually coming out, even if it’s no longer by James Cameron anymore. The air will soon turn crisp and the leaves crunchy, so let’s settle in and have a look at some of the movies you’ll likely want to see when your heater inevitably goes out at some point. –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer Film Editor __________________________________________________________ Source

Earlier this year, Melvins dropped Pinkus Abortion Technician, the sludge rockers’ 27th studio album. They followed it up with an aggressive touring schedule, one that’s given way to what has to be one of the coolest show posters we’ve ever seen. Created by Cincinnati artist Brian Methe and inspired by a cover a 1992 issue of Sassy, the gorgeous, grotesque illustration again finds Buzz Osborne and company nodding towards their bygone relationship with Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain. On it, you see the skeleton of who is pretty clearly Cobain, who is being embraced by a woman who is pretty clearly his ex-wife, Courtney Love. Here, her arms take on the form of tentacles, while a cash sign is stamped to Cobain’s skull. The implications are clear for anyone who’s even remotely read up on Cobain’s latter days and tumultuous, passionate relationship with Love. See it below, and smash this link to Methe’s Etsy store very, very quickly if you want one of your own. There is a very, very limited supply. Source

Preach The soulful singer/songwriter Stealth, not only has an exciting new signing with the electronic label Ultra Music (Calvin Harris, Deadmau5, Era Istrefi, Kygo, Sofi Tukker, Steve Aoki), but he also released his visual for “Gotta Stop Loving You”. Originally from Birmingham, UK, Stealth is known for creating records that are intertwine blues, rock, and soul all in one. His strong, guttural voice is aggressive yet silky that it carries a force across his music. His prowess doesn’t go unrecognized as Stealth sold out his first ever London headline show at Servant Jazz Quarters in November of 2017. Additionally, he has played in support of Seinabo Sey, Jamie Woon, Zella Day, Tiggs Da Author, Vaults, Kaleo and more. His music has been circulated over BBC stations Radio 1, Radio 2, 6 Music and BBC Introducing and has also been nominated for 3 Unsigned Music Awards prior to his signing to Ultra. In a previous interview, he discussed the thrill he is feeling for joining the Ultra team. “I’m so excited about this new chapter with Ultra. I had been putting stuff out on my own for a while and although it did pretty well, it’s pretty lonely. In the short time I’ve been signed to Ultra, I’ve felt like I’m part of a real family. Ultra might not be the obvious home for an artist like myself, however, the bricks don’t make a house a home – it’s the people. I really feel that these guys believe in what I’m doing and together we’re gonna have shit loads of fun and make some amazing music!” The new track will come from what is to be his forthcoming EP The Chorus, set to release September. The EP itself is just as bold as the vocalist, featuring production from Michael Angelo (Sam Smith) and Matty Benbrook (Paolo Nutini/Jack Savoretti). With the intensity of his vocals influenced by his idols His inspirations include Howlin’ Wolf and Etta James. The way Stealth truly began his journey of success is when his hit single “Judgement Day” was shown on an episode of Suits, the US TV series. The single alone has earned over 10 million streams on Spotify and YouTube combined. “Judgment Day” charted globally in 12 countries on Shazam. In addition to all of this Stealth has released 2 other EPs including The Intro and The Verse. These two also included singles that ended up on popular television shows, thus spreading his music around further. I had the chance to interview Stealth and learn more from him on the man behind the music. Interview below: Neelu Mohaghegh (NM): How’d you get started in music? Stealth (S): If we’re talking about the very very start I used to put an Elvis tribute show on from the age of 4 years old. It was very exclusive, only my family ever really got a ticket. But later on I started playing in clubs and pubs in the midlands. Then ended up at music college in London. (N): How has your hometown influenced your music or has it not really? (S): Massively as having to learn the pub and club songs introduced me to more classic soul and blues then I found myself. So without the pub and club circuit in my area, I may have had completely different taste. (N): Favorite artists? (S): Currently Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Alabama Shakes, and Father John Misty. (N): If you could collaborate with any artist today, who would you want to work with? (S): He’s a controversial figure but I’d be very interested in working with Kanye West. He’s just visionary and his use of old school songs in his first few albums is inspiring. I think he’s someone who would really pull something out of me I never knew I could create. (N): Favorite track you’ve made so far? (S): Made or released? That’s a tough one. If it’s what I’ve released or am about to release, I love my next single “Truth is” as it’s me trying to push my creative boundaries and it’s a song I couldn’t have dreamed of releasing a few years back. But out of all the songs I made, I’d say a song called “Bury Me.” It’s an old school blues jam and the words mean a lot personally. I just hope I can put it out at some point. (N): What’s the one thing you want fans to think of when they hear your music? (S): I don’t really want them to think or feel a specific way. The great thing about music is I could write a song that’s personal to me that could mean something completely different to someone else. (N): What’s your go-to look? (S): Old school and comfortable. Tends to be black though, so summer is a bit of a struggle. (N): Favorite type of food? (S): Curry. The hotter the better. (N): Where’s a venue or festival you hope to perform at one day? (S): It’s cliché to say Glastonbury but it’s the pinnacle so it would have to be Glasto. (N): Any fun facts or hidden talents fans might not know about you? (S): I can knock back a pint of beer pretty sharpish. Around the 2 second mark. Nothing amazing (or to be proud of kids) but yeah very rarely lose a chin off. (N): Is there anything (projects, trips, etc.) that you are looking forward to? (S): I’m just looking forward to the next year in general really. After just signing with Ultra, everything has been a bit of a blur but it’s been great. So I’m looking forward to keeping up the momentum and seeing what comes. (N): What are you On The Verge of? (S): World domination?? You decide…… So there you guys have it! Burning Man always brings the heat (pun intended) and this time it’s in the form of some huge sets that have been revealed by the EDM vet himself Diplo. In what shows itself as an animated doodle of a things to do list, he’s revealed where he’ll be playing around Burning Man, what he’ll be playing and who he’ll be playing with. Probably the most noteworthy mention on the note is a b2b with our mate, Flume. The animation, dropped on Diplo’s Instagram, details a bunch of sets with countless genres, the likes of which we sometimes forget the music veteran has in his back pocket. While we’re sitting pretty across the other side of the world, we’re hoping a cheeky recording pops up of the Flume and Diplo set, but until then, we’ll cruise along. Check out his full list of sets below and tell us which one you’d most be keen for! Source
