  1. Shameless is still going strong, with its ninth season kicking off on September 9th. But for Emmy Rossum, her time on the Showtime series in coming to an end, as she just announced that this upcoming season will be her last. Rossum plays Fiona Gallagher on the series, serving as a de facto house mother to a scrappy family led by a irresponsible patriarch played by William H. Macy. She announced her departure via a lengthy Facebook post praising the show’s cast, her character, and a communal backstage vibe that’s fostered a sense of community for the 31-year old actress. “See, in real life, unlike Fiona, I’m an only child. I never had a big family,” she wrote. “Being ensconced in that messy Gallagher family love is something I’d always dreamed of. But even off set, it feels real. We’ve watched the kids grow up into the strong, talented, independent human beings that they are.” In 2016, Rossum and the show made headlines when the actress refused to sign on for the series’ eighth season unless she was paid more than Macy, who, despite sharing lead duties on the show, was paid much more. Macy supported the idea, as did the showrunners, and Warner Bros. soon emerged with a new contract. Season nine will not be the show’s final season, however. “I know you will continue on without me, for now,” she said in her post. “There is much more Gallagher story to be told. I will always be rooting for my family. Try not to think of me as gone, just think of me as moving down the block.” Read the post in full below. Watch the trailer for Shameless season nine: Source
  2. Yoshi Flower has my heart right now, and it’s because his unique sound is like a refresh button for my musical palette. This week, I challenged myself to find a new artist and test out a new genre I had not really listened to, and Yoshi Flower definitely fit the criteria perfectly. If you haven’t heard of him yet, I think it’s about time to get acquainted. The Detroit-born musician is a newly signed-Interscope Records (via Rock Mafia) artist with a truly eclectic sound. In the past, the artist has collaborated with Elohim and has opened for Princess Nokia and Flint Eastwood. Next Flower will be opening for SG Lewis on his tour this fall! Tour dates below. So, what’s pretty special about his sound? His very chill music is hypnotic and melancholic. It’s almost eerie in the way he plays with the rejoicing sounds of the compositions by warping them into more cynical tunes. The electronic/hip-hop beats entwined by the voices remind me of two acts I really like: Blackbear and The Neighbourhood. The dark features take over the productions and draw you into the edgy multi-genre records that Flower creates. Recently, Flower released two new singles, “Brown Paper Bag” and “Just Cuz We’re Paranoid Doesn’t Mean They’re Not Onto Us”. The first single was premiered on Zane Lowe’s World First on Beats 1 Radio on Apple Music two weeks ago and his second track has been receiving it’s own praise. Both records own a sort of aggravated and dynamic character to them. “Just Cuz We’re Paranoid Doesn’t Mean They’re Not Onto Us” has an aggressive grind to it and a malicious, evil-villain kind of tone, but his voice is just soft enough to pull back into the melody. In “Brown Paper Bag” the music is definitely a mix in tonality where for one second the music is serene and the next it’s viciously biting with heavy beats and fierce guitar riffs. I’m curious to find out where this artist will take his music and what kind of project he will put out as a whole when the time comes. 3. Tough news out of the Mastodon camp, as the band has been forced to cancel their North American fall tour with Dinosaur Jr. due to a “critical situation of a member of the Mastodon family.” The trek was slated to kick off this Saturday, September 1st, in Edmonton, Canada. Mastodon made the announcement today on Facebook with the following message: Mastodon regrets to inform fans that due to a critical situation of a member of the Mastodon family, their upcoming tour with Dinosaur Jr. will be canceled. Tickets and VIP upgrades will be refunded at point of purchase. Mastodon would like to extend their sincerest thanks to their loyal fans as well as the fans of Dinosaur Jr. for their support and understanding at this time. The band hopes to make up these shows at a future time, but as of now, no plans for rescheduling have been set. We recently interviewed Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor, and he told us he was “stoked” about touring with Dinosaur Jr., calling frontman J. Mascis a “definite visionary.” The affected tour dates are listed below. 5. The Pitch: It’s 1948 in the English countryside. WWII is over, but its ghosts continue to inhabit the lands once ruled by the noblest families. Among them for hundreds of years were the Ayres, who oversaw the once-opulent Hundreds Hall as the epicenter of British high culture. Post-war, however, Hundreds Hall isn’t what it used to be. Mrs. Ayres (Charlotte Rampling) wanders the halls convinced of a malevolent presence in the house. Her daughter Caroline (Ruth Wilson) is simply trying to maintain what’s left of the decrepit space, for the sake of her family. The eldest son, Roderick (Will Poulter), returned from the war covered in scars and convinced that Hundreds Hall has been claimed by a great evil. So when Dr. Faraday (Domhnall Gleeson) arrives to help rehabilitate Roderick, he soon discovers that his present may become just as connected as his past to Hundreds Hall, and anything which may exist within its walls. The Ghosts of You and Me: Based on Sarah Waters’ novel, The Little Stranger is hardly the slow-churning horror film its trailers have suggested it to be. There are certainly more than a few instances of genuine terror throughout, but its horrors are every bit as allegorical as literal. As interpreted by Room director Lenny Abrahamson, Stranger is far more concerned with the quietly pervasive politics of its era and region than with the specters at the center of the story, for better and worse. This does occasionally drain some of the drama out of the film’s central conceit (is the house haunted, or are its residents?) when so much time is spent on Faraday’s complex relationship to Hundreds Hall and talk of glorious onetime parties, but it also situates The Little Stranger as a more pensive kind of ghost story. The pacing and tone and top-notch set design alike recall Crimson Peak, another misunderstood gothic drama about what lost family legacies leave in the wake. If Stranger never achieve’s that film’s giddy giallo peaks, its understated tone nevertheless conjures up a palpable sense of ominous mood that imbues the film with a sustained hum of dread even when its story can’t always keep up. The Verdict: “I could not help imagining that I belonged.” Faraday utters this early in The Little Stranger, and it’s a fine summary of the bitter, pointed cynicism that Abrahamson and writer Lucinda Coxon bring to their adaptation. Belonging is central to the film, both in Faraday’s status as an educated man born from common stock and in the possessive nature that seems to immediately overcome anybody who enters what remains of Hundreds Hall. The notion of belonging is frequently made sinister, whether politically or paranormally, throughout the film, particularly around the time when Roderick begins to experience terrifying visions of what he believes to be the inevitable end of the Hall, and the family, if they don’t leave at once. Leaving isn’t so simple with centuries of investment involved, however, and that’s to say nothing of what happens if Roderick is right and something else is attempting to keep them in place. Particularly through Caroline, who Wilson brings to vivid life as a woman who’s once been denied a life of her own and has to struggle with the mid-century compulsion to keep the family intact, The Little Stranger grapples with class and the accompanying status. To that end, its most compelling moments emerge later in the film, as a reticent mutual attraction between her and Faraday gives way to something more nuanced, and increasingly unsettling. (Gleeson is likewise excellent as Faraday, turning him into a milquetoast rube full of unnerving multitudes.) Abrahamson’s approach to the material is intimate, which hobbles the film when it comes to fully considering the larger cultural constructs it introduces, but allows its central foursome to delivery showy-yet-affecting turns as opposite and yet complimentary forces of terror and inaction. Yet as each member of the Ayres family and the one interloper begin to question their very selves, The Little Stranger slowly mutates into a harrowing treatise on the ways in which absolute privilege can corrupt absolutely. Where’s It Playing?: The Little Stranger is now nationwide in limited release. Source
  6. This past Sunday, BROCKHAMPTON announced they’d be dropping a new album called Iridescence next month. Now, the hip-hop boyband has scheduled a North American fall tour in support of that release. Spanning 27 dates, the “I’ll Be There” tour officially kicks off October 3rd in Mesa, Arizona before making its way through Houston, New Orleans, Philadelphia, New York, Toronto, Chicago, Seattle, Denver, and Las Vegas, among other cities. The itinerary also includes festival appearances at Austin City Limits and Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw in Los Angeles. This newest run of dates follows BROCKHAMPTON’s recent stint over in Europe. It also comes after the band decided to part ways with member Ameer Vann following accusations of sexual and emotional abuse and misconduct by multiple women. Iridescence, which appears to be separate from the previously announced the best years of our lives, will be the group’s first album since last year’s impressive SATURATION III. 7. Origins is a recurring new music feature that tasks an artist with dissecting the inspirations that led to their latest song. When looking to spark their songwriting sessions, rising outfit The Dose dig through the catalogs of Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, The Sex Pistols, and The Cure. Their sound is no mere rehashing of music’s past, however. For the Los Angeles duo — comprised of Indio Downey (son of Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr.) and Ralph Alexander — they’re injecting the legendary rock of yesteryear with the energy of today. Early listeners got a glimpse of this potential on The Dose’s 2016 self-titled EP, self-produced and partially tracked at Jack White’s own Third Man Records in Nashville. Downey and Alexander are now ready to take the next step in their career by releasing their full-length debut album. The forthcoming 12-track effort features production from Keith Nelson (Buckcherry) and mixing by Joe Barresi, known for his work with Tool and Queens of the Stone Age. Although a confirmed release date has yet to be revealed, The Dose are today sharing one of the album’s singles with the world. It’s called “Saline” and, like many alt-rock anthems of the past, it wavers between quiet, heartfelt musings and full-on adrenaline rushes. “She’s like a potion I can’t deny/ A hand in motion that doesn’t leave me dry,” Downey sings, clearly entranced by love. Check it out below via its official music video, directed by Jake Stark and produced by MDDN (the company run by Good Charlotte’s Benji and Joel Madden, which also manages The Dose). It follows Downey and Alexander as they spend a gorgeous day at the beach. Both Downey and Alexander spoke to Consequence of Sound about the inspirations that helped birth “Saline”, including the music of U2 and the majesty of both the Pacific Ocean and Joshua Tree National Park. U2 — “Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”: Ralph Alexander: Early U2 is some of the best songwriting of all time, in my humble opinion. This song in particular is a slow burn that builds from the start, capturing the listener as it goes. That kind of writing was something I always envied and hoped to achieve with Indio when he brought in the initial ideas for “Saline”. Photograph: Indio Downey: The line “Saline on my bedspread” was directly inspired by a photograph I took of my girlfriend, Sophia. Every time I look at it, it makes me smile. That’s kind of what I wanted to accomplish with the song. Joshua Tree National Park: photo by NPS/Brad Sutton RA: For me, there’s never a better time to think, reflect and absorb music than when you’re on the road. Indio and I spent many days and nights camping around Joshua Tree during the writing process for the record. The dichotomy between total silence and wind howling across the desert inspired the constant shift in dynamics I wanted to capture on the song. Love: ID: (citing a lyric from “Saline”) — “She’s like a potion I can’t deny, a hand in motion, that doesn’t leave me dry.” Pacific Ocean: RA: “Saline” is very much the ending of a journey for us on the record. It was the final song written and recorded while we were still mixing/mastering the others. This song was literally written within view of the ocean and it was always an inspiration to look out and see the vast panoramic view. A constant shift in dynamics, feelings and sounds. In addition to putting the finishing touches on their debut album, The Dose will be playing alongside System of a Down, Deftones, and Alice in Chains at this year’s Aftershock Festival in Sacramento and Louder Than Life Festival in Louisville. 8. Aziz Ansari has kept himself largely out of the public eye since being accused of sexual misconduct back in January. He’s slowly been inching back into the comedy scene, however, performing an unannounced Comedy Cellar set in New York City in May, as well as stopping at clubs in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Now, he’s announced his return to the road with a short run of September shows. Dubbed the “Working Out New Material Tour”, the trek includes two dates at Charleston, South Carolina’s Gaillard Center and a pair of shows in Tennessee, one in Knoxville and another in Chattanooga. Tickets are available now. Netflix is probably glad to see the star and creator of their hit series Master of Nonewould be open getting back out there. Programming executive Cindy Holland recently said the streaming service to a third season of the show “when Aziz is ready.” “We certainly have given some thought to it,” she added. “We certainly would be happy to make another season of Master of None with Aziz.” In an article published by babe, a woman identified as Grace detailed a date that allegedly ended with Ansari being sexually aggressive and ignoring “verbal and non-verbal cues to indicate how uncomfortable and distressed she was.” Ansari issued a response saying, “It was true that everything did seem okay to me, so when I heard that it was not the case for her, I was surprised and concerned. I took her words to heart and responded privately after taking the time to process what she had said.” Another comic who has been a centerpiece of the #MeToo movement, Louis C.K., has also begun mounting his comeback. He recently dropped in for a set at the Comedy Cellar, though one joke that mentioned a rape whistle didn’t sit well with some audience members. Source
  9. Gérard Depardieu has been accused of rape and sexual assault, reports the BBC. The French actor, best known for films like Cyrano de Bergerac and Green Card, denies the allegations “absolutely.” According to a French media report, the allegations come from a 22-year old French actress. The Hollywood Reporter quotes a Holland-based news agency, reporting that the woman claims she was raped on two separate occasions by Depardieu, who was reportedly giving her “professional advice.” The assaults occurred, per sources of the Le Parisien newspaper, at Depardieu’s home on August 7th and 13th of this year. Hervé Temime, a lawyer for the actor, is sure of Depardieu’s innocence. “I had a long meeting with Gérard Depardieu and I am absolutely convinced his innocence will be established,” he told France Info radio. Depardieu has appeared in 170 films over five decades. In 1990, he received his first Academy Award nomination for Cyrano de Bergerac and was awarded a Golden Globe for Green Card. His other notable film roles include The Last Metro, Jean de Florette, 1492: Conquest of Paradise, and Life of Pi. Source
  10. Ridin’ in their “Rari” Last week, Deco Fam dropped their debut album Chinatown (executive produced by SUPR SPRT) and it’s a project that will have you The project is currently available on all digital streaming services and you can listen to it HERE. hilarious new music video to accompany their recently released single “Rari” and it’s definitely something worth checking out and getting curious about. Above is the accompanying music video for their single “Rari” which comes off the new album. The song itself is light-hearted and comical. And much like the rest of the beats from the project, this one is another banger that has you moving to the entirety of the tune. So who is Deco Fam? The act includes the make-up of two Haitian rappers, who come from Dade County Miami. However, the two have taken their sound and brought it to the city of La La Land to grow their musical reach. Deco Ho Chi Mayne & Deco STLN (aka Deco Fam) are actually peculiar and more fascinating pair than you may think. They’re not just rappers, but they’re also designers–true artists by trade. For the past 4 years, these two served as footwear designers at PUMA and a lot of their work could be found in the partnerships such as Fenty, The Weeknd, Selena Gomes, and Jay-Z (and many more). The creative community came to recognize their side hustle as they would throw after hour parties at their loft in Chinatown Gate, where super producer Sonny Digital, A$AP Mob, and Michael Christmas have made appearances. Chinatown, their 11-track project, has already had good reviews! Their single “Deco Juug” was featured on The FADER in January of this year and Sound of Boston, and the guys themselves have been reviewed by Respect Mag. They also more recently performed at The PULL UP at ONCE Ballroom in Somerville, MA. The guys take us on a musical journey of their own that incorporates the stylings of trap, Haitian, and Asian music and brings it all into one big fusion of sound. With heavy bass lines and eclectic percussive tones, the melodies transform into strange and intense compositions. It’s as if you step into Alice’s Wonderland and don’t quite know where you end up, but it’s somewhere in between lit and quirky. So, with all of that being said, I think it’s time you give the music a listen yourself, and hear for yourself the sounds of Deco Fam below: Be sure to stay tuned as the guys have much more in store and connect with them via social media! 11. Bruce Springsteen has spent the last 10 months occupied with his smash Broadway residency, but the show is scheduled to come to an end on December 15th. (Barring another extension, of course.) With the finish line nearing, fans are beginning to wonder what’s next for The Boss, and now we may have the first hints at an answer. (Read: The 100 Greatest Debut Singles of All Time) Producer Ron Aniello, who worked on Bruce’s last two albums with The E Street Band, 2014’s High Hopes and 2012’s Wrecking Ball, has been teasing some studio sessions on Instagram (via Wicked Local). Two posts in particular feature E Street drummer Max Weinberg in what appears to be Springsteen’s own Colts Neck, New Jersey studio. Adding more fuel to the fire, the videos were posted sometime Sunday or Monday, days that Bruce was off from Broadway. So, who knows what song @EStreetMax is playing here in @springsteen Colts Neck studio? Or is Ron Aniello just trolling us pic.twitter.com/awvtdf5hsu — Greasy Lake (@GreasyLake) August 28, 2018 Springsteen previously teased a new solo album in an interview with Variety last November. “It’s a singer-songwriter record. It’s connected to my solo records writing-wise, more Tunnel of Love and Devils and Dust, but it’s not like them at all. Just different characters living their lives,” he explained. He also said the album is influenced by Southern California pop music of the ’70s, name-checking the likes of Glen Campbell, Jimmy Webb, and Burt Bacharach. Of course, it’s entirely possible these recent studio sessions are unrelated to a new Springsteen record. Per Wicked Local, there’s word that fellow E Street member/Mrs. Springsteen, Patti Scialfa, is also working on an album. It also could be related to an upcoming Nebraska/Born in the USA box set. Some on social media are even suggesting Weinberg is covering ELO’s “Don’t Bring Me Down” in the above clip. It’s impossible to know for sure what any of this really means, but anytime the E Street Band is in studio it’s exciting, and you have to believe The Boss isn’t far behind. Source
  12. Paul Simon’s In the Blue Light isn’t due out for another week, but you can currently stream the entire thing over at NPR. The album, released to coincide with final North American leg of the legendary songwriter’s farewell tour, consists of reinterpretations of, as he puts it, “songs that I thought were almost right, or were odd enough to be overlooked the first time around.” Previously, we shared a new version of 1990’s “Can’t Run But”, for which Simon teamed up with The National’s Bryce Dessner and instrumental collective yMusic. Elsewhere on the album are contributions from trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, guitarist Bill Frisell, and drummer Jack DeJohnette, as well as Simon’s longtime bandmate Steve Gadd. 13. Pusha-T and Drake have been at each other’s throats since Pusha dropped “Don’t Fuck With Me” in 2011, which warned Drake to stay in his lane: “Rappers on they sophomores / Actin’ like they boss lords.” Despite this, Pusha’s G.O.O.D. Music honcho, Kanye West, had maintained a productive working relationship with Drake, to the point where they briefly teased a collaborative album together. However, after Pusha took more shots at Drake on his latest album, the Kanye-produced DAYTONA, Kanye suddenly found himself at the receiving end of not one, but two Drake diss tracks. He also mocked Kanye during a recent show in Chicago. As it turns out, Drake’s animus toward Kanye doesn’t stem from his involvement in DAYTONA. At least according to Kanye, who says Drake is actually peeved over “Lift Yourself”. Released in April, ahead of Kanye’s ye, “Lift Yourself” is built around a beat sampled from the 1973 soul song “Liberty” by the group Amnesty. It’s an intriguing track… until it’s ruined by Kanye’s nonsensical toilet humor (“Whoop-di-scoop-di-poop/Poop-di-scoopty/ Scoopty-whoop” he raps in the second half of the song). It seems as if Drake was either supposed to be on an unreleased proper version of “Lift Yourself”, or intended to use the beat on his own album Scorpion — that was, until Kanye leaked it. As a result, Kanye says Drake has been texting him purple demon emojis. As Kanye relayed in an interview with Chicago’s 107.5 WGCI Chicago: “Drake is a person who loves Kanye West, you’re supposed to be protective of that person at all cost and make sure, ‘Bro, are you good?’ It’s not about being selfish, like ‘I wanted to be on the ‘Lift Yourself’ beat and I wasn’t on it, so now I’m mad about it, and now I’m sending you purple demon emojis.'” For his part, Kanye isn’t interested in beefing with Drake. “I don’t play like that, I don’t play in that place . . . It’s like, look, it ain’t no beef,” Kanye said in his interview with WGCI. Ultimately, he believes he and Drake will reconcile “because we got to. We got work to do because these voices are just too powerful.” Drake doesn’t appear ready to bury the hatchet just yet, however. Following Kanye’s comments, he posted a photo to Instagram which he captioned with the purple demon and crying-laughing emojis. Source
  14. Last year, prior to the sudden passing of singer Dolores O’Riordan, The Cranberries drew up plans for a 25th anniversary edition of their seminal debut album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?. In tribute to O’Riordan, the band’s surviving members decided to move forward with the archival release, which will arrive on October 19th through UMC. Available as a four-disc box set as well as a 2-CD deluxe bundle, the collection boasts session outtakes, B-sides, and the band’s debut EP alongside a remastered version of the original album. Also included is a handful of early demos, which were originally recorded under the name The Cranberry Saw Us. (Read: The Cranberries’ Stunning Debut Does More Than Just Linker 25 Years Later) Also on October 19th, fans can also purchase the remastered album digitally and on vinyl, including a 180-gram black LP and a limited edition color LP. Pre-orders have begun here. Since its initial release in March 1993, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? has sold over six million copies worldwide. The debut record produced hit singles in “Linger” and “Dreams”. As a press release notes, it was main songwriter O’Riordan’s “dogged determination to succeed” that led to the album’s title: “Elvis wasn’t always Elvis,” she said. “He wasn’t born Elvis Presley, he was a person who was born in a random place, he didn’t particularly have a lot but he became Elvis. And Michael Jackson was born somewhere and he became Michael Jackson and so on and so forth. And I thought we were just born in a random place so why can’t we be that successful as well? And I believed we could but the majority of people were saying, ‘You’re absolutely nuts, you’re not going to make it, you can’t make any money out of it, you should do cover versions!’.” This 25th anniversary reissue comes ahead of The Cranberries’ final album, which is on schedule for release in 2019. 15. Alternative rock’s rise to prominence in the early ’90s made for some surprising hit singles, including some from cult heroes for whom mainstream acceptance never seemed in the cards. After Nirvana, it seemed like a shot at their proverbial 15 minutes. But even by that measure, the success of Danzig‘s “Mother ’93” felt a little bit like hell freezing over. Glenn Danzig wasn’t groomed for major radio and MTV, and even his hit single took five years to break through the underground to wider audiences (“Mother ’93” is a slightly retooled version of “Mother”, originally released on the self-titled 1988 debut album from the singer’s namesake band). But the song’s success won Danzig more than record sales and fame. It also earned him some hearty vindication. The song is a direct shot at the Parents Music Resource Center, which in the mid 1980s made it its goal to try and safeguard children from what its members saw as “offensive” music. Formed by Tipper Gore, Pam Howar, Sally Nevius, and Susan Baker, the PMRC targeted not just music with explicit lyrics, but also that which they found promoted violence, sexual deviancy, and other subject matter they saw capable of corrupting the imaginations of young listeners. The watch group’s “Filthy Fifteen”, a list of songs that members found objectionable that was assembled and released in 1985, zeroed in specifically on pop (Prince’s “Darling Nikki”, Cyndi Lauper’s “She Bop”, Madonna’s “Dress You Up”) and ’70s and ’80s hard rock and metal (AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Def Leppard, Judas Priest, and Twisted Sister, to name just a few). The list served as a springboard into the PMRC’s end goal of labeling offensive or explicit records as such to tip off parents about their content. The PMRC’s efforts became known as “The War on Porn Rock.” During hearings held in September 1985, artists including Frank Zappa, Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider, and even John Denver took turns pushing back against what they saw as a huge red flag waving in the face of artistic freedom. The PMRC originally proposed a rating system on par with that the MPAA used for films, but eventually settled for a more measured course of action, charging the Recording Industry Association of America with branding records deemed explicit with warning labels. The labels, dismissively referred to as “Tipper stickers”, started appearing in their earliest forms on records in 1985. By 1990, the Recording Industry Association of America rebranded the label in the form of the now-iconic black-and-white Parental Advisory sticker, which graced the covers of predominantly rock and hip hop records, including later pressings of Danzig’s 1988 self-titled debut. Now, 30 years later, the album remains a case study of the capriciousness and ineffectiveness of the labeling system. Danzig formed his namesake band after disbanding Samhain in the summer of 1986. The singer, along with Samhain bassist Eerie Von, drummer Chuck Buscuits, and guitarist John Christ, linked up with Rick Rubin, releasing their debut on August 30, 1988. The singer’s fascination with graphic imagery dates as far back as The Misfits’ comic-inspired horror punk. But his new band’s debut subbed out his former band’s hardcore sound and violent, B-movie imagery for something less explicit and more suggestive. Punk adrenaline was sidelined for moody, blues-infused gloom metal, while Danzig toyed with lyrical imagery that was by turns biblical (“Twist of Cain”), sexual (“She Rides”), and, at least on its face, satanic (“Am I Demon”, “Evil Thing”). But while undeniably dark, it’s near-impossible to call Danzig explicit. On the complete contrary, the record’s lyrics are almost spotlessly clean, even grimly poetic. Save for the singer’s use of the word “whore” in “Possession”, there’s not a vulgar word to be found. Still there was something intangible baked within Danzig‘s 10 tracks that irked the powers that be. Two years after the release, the album got retroactively hit with the Parental Advisory warning. Stickering Danzig’s debut is proof positive of just how arbitrary and freewheeling the process for applying the Parental Advisory label is and always has been. The RIAA quickly punted the responsibility of stickering albums to the record labels themselves, and there never seemed to be much in the way of codified criteria outlining what should or should not be considered explicit or offensive. The matter only got grayer and murkier in 1996, when it was decided to revise language on the stickers from “Explicit Lyrics” to “Explicit Content.” In other words, the music industry was given further latitude to label just about anything it didn’t like, be it because of a record’s lyrics, cover art, or anything in between. This didn’t go unnoticed by Danzig himself. More than 25 years after Danzig’s release, the singer still felt raw over what he saw as the PMRC’s lame attempt at censorship. “‘Mother’ was a song I wrote about the PMRC,” Danzig told City Pages in an interview from 2013. “Al Gore wanted to tell people what they could listen to and what they couldn’t, what they could record. It was basically coming down to the idea that he wouldn’t let anybody record any music that he didn’t think you should be doing. There was going to be an organization that would tell you what you could and couldn’t record. And certainly if you couldn’t record it, you couldn’t put it out. It was really fascist.” Labels undeniably have been cherry picking records they considered worthy of the Parental Advisory label for years, but the sticker seems to lose more and more clout with each passing year. Even from the start, many records branded with the sticker sold in the millions, especially in genres such as hip-hop where getting stuck with the label became almost unavoidable. Records such as Nine Inch Nails’ The Downward Spiral, Rage Against The Machine’s Evil Empire, Marilyn Manson’s Antichrist Superstar and Eminem’s Marshall Mathers LP, to name but a few, thrived not just in spite of the label, but perhaps because of it. The label started as a warning, but over time it grew into an emblem for anti-establishment cool, oddly supporting the exact music it was initially designed to warn the world against. The label’s effectiveness only further evaporated with the rise of the internet, first through MP3s and downloads and now through streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music. What good is a physical warning label in an age where fewer and fewer listeners are using physical media? Even PMRC members concede the point today that there’s little use for the labeling system they worked to create more than 30 years ago. “But there’s not much we can do about that,” Susan Baker told Newsweek in 2015. “This digital age is amazing.” At least with “Mother”, Danzig was able to get in the last word. “Can you keep them in the dark for life?” “Can you hide them from the waiting world?” Apparently not. 16. tUnE-yArDs dropped their latest album, I can feel you creep into my private life, back in January, but they’ve also had a pretty busy summer. They appeared on the Sorry to Bother You soundtrack and teamed up with that film’s star, Lakeith Stanfield, for another track called “Mango”. Now the indie pop duo are back with more new music, as they’re the latest artists to feature on Spotify Singles. As is standard for the live recording series, the band recorded a live take of one of their own songs as well as a cover. For the original, they went with the I can feel you track “ABC 123”, turning in a more kinetic rendition that at times feels like its boarding on a techno remix. That same energy went into their cover, Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”. While remaining faithful to the progression of the ’80s classic, tUnE-yArDs layer their version with spacey, bubbly effects that somehow feel even more ’80s than the original. Take a listen below. Next month, tUnE-yArDs will join David Byrne on the road as he picks up the final leg of his US tour. Source
  17. Kweku Collins resurfaced last month with a single called “Sisko Kasidy”. Today, the Closed Sessions rapper is back with the gift of another tune, “ET”. Whereas his previous Star Trek-referencing track lived in a space of hazy arrangements, this new song finds Collins calmly rap-singing over a gentle acoustic guitar. It’s an emotive listen, and also one that continues to show the Chicago MC’s varied taste when it comes to textures in his music (a press statement notes he handled both the guitar parts and production). Hear “ET” down below. Along with new music, Collins has announced a North American fall tour featuring support from Joseph Chilliams. 19. The Primals have an impressive pedigree, boasting a lineup consisting of current and former members of Darkest Hour, The Explosion and Dead to Fall, and they’re set to unveil their debut album, All Love Is True Love, on September 7th via Southern Lord. Leading up to the release, the band has teamed up with Heavy Consequence and Consequence of Sound to premiere the fuzzed-out rock track “Pity City”. The band is fronted by John Henry, best known as the vocalist of veteran metal band Darkest Hour. Musically, the Primals are a far cry from the melodic death metal stylings of Darkest Hour, but the band still brings some heavy riffing to their infectious brand of rock. Rounding out the trio are bassist Chad Fjerstad (formerly of Dead To Fall) and drummer Andrew Black (formerly of The Explosion). Regarding the track “Pity City”, Henry tells us, “This song originally came from a different project I was working on which was more electronic, using an old Univox drum machine and a bunch of layered synths and guitars. It stood out to me as more of a structured song than the rest from that session so I decided to see if it would work with the Primals.” He adds, “Once Andrew added his version of the drumbeat and I heard it with Chad playing the driving bassline I knew it would work. This one is definitely more on the poppy/pretty end of the spectrum of the album, and the only track that features a synth part. Lyrically this track is a good representation of the album title All Love Is True Love, as it’s sort of a love song to everyone I’ve ever loved, even the ones who are out of my life. I think the last lines sum up the song fairly well: ‘Me and the ones I adore, I don’t believe there’s an end anymore, and we are nothing.’” All Love Is True Love, which was produced by John Reis (Rocket From The Crypt, Hot Snakes), is available for pre-order digitally via iTunes and physically via Southern Lord at this location. In addition, you can catch the Primals playing a handful of concerts this fall, including three record-release shows in September, plus a gig with the legendary ’60s band The Sonics in November. 22. Neneh Cherry returned earlier this month with her first single in four years, “Kong”, produced by Four Tet and Massive Attack’s 3D. It turns out the track is taken from a much larger project, Cherry’s fifth studio album titled Broken Politics. Due out October 19th through Smalltown Supersound/Awal Recordings, the new album follows Blank Project from 2014. Writing sessions took place over the course of a week at Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, New York — a space founded by Karl Berger, a jazz pianist who played with Cherry’s stepfather, Don Cherry. Much like Black Project, the LP’s production was overseen by Four Tet’s Kieran Hebden. Cherry’s writing partner Cameron McVey also contributed throughout. As its title suggests, the album sees Cherry wrestling with today’s political climate and the disillusionment it’s bred. She elaborated in a statement: “I like writing from a personal perspective, and the time we live in is so much about finding your own voice. People have been left feeling misheard, misunderstood, and disillusioned. What the fuck can I do? Maybe politics starts in your bedroom, or your house — a form of activism, and a responsibility. The album is about all of those things: feeling broken, disappointed, and sad, but having perseverance. It’s a fight against the extinction of free thought and spirit.” As a second preview of Broken Politics, Cherry has shared a new song called “Shot Gun Shack”. Per Cherry, it’s about “the notion of war zones and the tragedies that guns bring there… The dealing of arms. Street culture. The gun is a powerful thing—dangerous, but powerful.” The track takes its name from “shotgun houses”, which were a popular type of house in the South, especially New Orleans, from the end of the Civil War to the 1920s. Take a listen below. The artwork for Broken Politics, as well as the above press picture, was done by German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans. He’s also known for the photo art for Frank Ocean’s Blonde and its accompanying print magazine, Boys Don’t Cry. Broken Politics Artwork: Broken Politics Tracklist: 01. Fallen Leaves 02. Kong 03. 23. Portland’s own Release Highly-Anticipated New EP, The Reign Portland, Oregon bass music producer Cory O and MC Raquel Divar are excited to announce the release of their new EP The Reign. On this five-track EP, Cory and Raquel skillfully combine elements of trap, bass music, grime, double time, rap, and hip-hop to create their own genre they have deemed “rap forward electronic music.” The duo had this to say about the title of their EP release. “We ride between the electronic and hip-hop worlds, we’re just trying to create something different.” The Reign also alludes to the fact that is their zone, their lane, and what they do. Influenced by their own real-life experiences in Portland, The Reign touches on the west coast weed culture on “Runners Anthem” and politics, namely the Portland protest following the Trump election on “Snakes In The City.” Cory and Raquel’s style brings to mind artists such as Foreign Beggars, Run The Jewels, and Spark Master Tape. Raquel’s powerful lyrical flow is the perfect compliment to Cory’s masterfully produced beats. Raquel often uses metaphor, most notably on “Smith N Wesson” featuring Alia Zin to display her poetic skills. Some could even liken Raquel Divar the Missy Elliot of bass music. The Reign is now available on most major digital platforms via Cory’s own emblem Tomahawk Recordings. Listen to ‘The Reign’ above, courtesy of Spotify.
