  1. The Sydney housing market is absolutely hilarious if you don’t live in Sydney, but if you do it’s like witnessing a depressing meme continue to spiral out of control. While literal shitholes can still cop a pretty penny if they’re in the right place, it’s unusual to see a house which housed a dead body to attract quite as much attention as it did. People are covering their mouths as they walk through the property, asking “I wonder where the mummified body was?” pic.twitter.com/LfEtj6ZsLC — Tawar Razaghi (@TawarRazaghi) August 25, 2018 A house in Greenwich which was home to the body of a suspected robber was today flogged at auction for a whopping $2 million. Apparently, the house that belonged to a hoarder and was pretty damn run down didn’t deter potential buyers because more than 200 people turned up for the auction. The building was bought by an expat family living in Singapore, who enlisted Rob West to see out the bidding process for them. Surprisingly, old mate didn’t seem to give two shits about the house’s gory past. I’m at the most Sydney spectacle ever…the Greenwich house where the mummified body was found is up for auction today and my lord it’s a sight to see pic.twitter.com/2xXjKlqjw0 — Tawar Razaghi (@TawarRazaghi) August 25, 2018 “Lots of people die in old houses … every house has a history and this one is just a bit more interesting,” Mr West said. Now, the goal is to fix it up in the short term and rent it out, and eventually knock it all down and build some sweet juicy Sydney real-estate. Source
  2. If you’re anything like us, then you would’ve been a bit gob-smacked by Disclosure’s frenzy of new music coming out of nowhere last week. While trying our best to keep up with the onslaught, we’ve decided the best thing to do is a big ol’ recap highlighting our top picks! MOONLIGHT (EXTENDED MIX) ~ The first of five, boy this one had us excited as you may have seen. I think last Monday we all became fans of Swedish a capella after this track, with the hypnotic looping harmonies featured on the track a sample from a group by the name of The Real Group covering a classic When I Fall in Love, coupled with the iconic Disclosure deep house, this one is soothing and just an all round lovey bit of work from the British brothers. WHERE ANGELS FEAR TO TREAD ~ No more than a day later, Moonlight was followed up with this tasty morsel. This one is certainly not what we have come to expect from Disclosure, signalling to us that the boys are diverse in their talents and out to make a statement. Once again relying heavily on the samples, this cut is much slower and certainly less dancy. Grabbing an old school ultra-lounge a capella version of ‘Fools Rush In (Where Angels Fear to Tread)’, the boys make it bop while maintaining its classic and carefree vibe. Definitely a grower. LOVE CAN BE SO HARD ~ The third of the five, this one is less moody and certainly more of a boog – a rich taste of future-funk and one of our favourite picks of the bunch. Listen below to the disco charged track and let the bass get all up in ya. WHERE YOU COME FROM (EXTENDED MIX) ~ This one is perhaps more Disclosure-esque but still very much something new. Again bringing the samples, this time the boys have employed the work of Sudanese artist Kamal Keila in a much pacier track than those previously mentioned. A shuffling beat and some interesting techno sounds combine for an interesting listen. FUNKY SENSATION (EXTENDED MIX) (FEAT. GWEN McCRAE) ~ The last of the tracks is a re-work of Gwen McRae’s 80s disco hit, a hugely popular song to sample. Certainly more of a remix than an original piece of work, the boys add some drums among other things while letting McRae’s powerful vocals do their thing, stretching it out to 6 minutes of house groove. By the end of it, I can guarantee that you’ll be able to feel the funky sensation. In a recent interview on BBC Radio 1, Disclosure made it known that they’ve been putting in work and an album isn’t far away. “We seem to be back right now. It’s definitely been a while. 100 per cent an album is being made – that’s for sure. Whether or not these songs make it [on the album] is yet to be seen. We’ve been writing a lot. We reckon we’ve put together about 80 to 100 different ideas over the past year, but we have no idea which of them, if any, will actually be on the album. It’s a serious track listing job to come now. Now we’re going to start moving onto the next step and start working with some vocalists.” Let us know your pick of the bunch, and if you’re hanging out for the new Disclosure album. 3. The Conners, the Roseanne spin-off that emerged after the reboot was canceled in the wake of a racist Twitter tirade from its star, Roseanne Barr, is slated to premiere on ABC on October 16th. Little is known about how the show will move on without the woman who started it all, but, if comments from actor John Goodman are to be taken literally, it appears ABC is going the Two and a Half Men route of killing her off. In a lovely, emotional interview with The Times, Goodman said the new series will find his character, Dan Conner, “mopey and sad because his wife’s dead.” ABC hasn’t confirmed that Roseanne will be dead when The Conners premieres, but it seems an odd choice of words if he were speaking figuratively. It also sounds in line with ABC’s previously released synopsis for the new series, which reads: After a sudden turn of events, the Conners are forced to face the daily struggles of life in Lanford in a way they never have before. This iconic family – Dan, Jackie, Darlene, Becky and D.J. – grapples with parenthood, dating, an unexpected pregnancy, financial pressures, aging, and in-laws in working-class America. Through it all, the fights, the coupon cutting, the hand-me-downs, the breakdowns – with love, humor and perseverance, the family prevails. As the above description makes clear, The Conners will welcome back stars Sara Gilbert (Darlene), Laurie Metcalf(Jackie), Lecy Goranson (Becky), and Michael Fishman (D.J.). Goodman was tight-lipped when asked about Roseanne‘s cancellation—”I was surprised at the response,” he said—but did assert that he knows “for a fact that [Barr] is not a racist.” He added, “She had to sign a paper saying that she relinquished all her rights to the show so that we could go on. I sent her an email and thanked her for that. I did not hear anything back, but she was going through hell at the time. And she’s still going through hell.” The QAnon crowd’s gonna go wild with this, aren’t they? Source
  4. Another big name has joined the cast of Warner Bros.’s upcoming Joker film. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Alec Baldwin will play Bruce Wayne’s father. Unlike traditional Batman cannon, however, the script paints Baldwin’s Thomas Wayne as “a cheesy and tanned businessman who is more in the mold of a 1980s Donald Trump,” THR adds. Baldwin joins an impressive cast that already included Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker; Zazie Beetz, who plays a single mother who catches the eye of the future Clown Prince of Crime; and Robert DeNiro, who is cast to play a talk show host who is somehow instrumental in the Joker’s origin. Titled simply Joker and due for release in October 4th, 2019, the film is to be directed Todd Phillips (The Hangover, War Dogs). Phillips teamed up with Scott Silver (8 Mile) to write a script described as an “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.” As such, the film is meant to be darker and more experimental in tone and content than previous DC comic book films. It also boasts a modest $55 million price tag, which is significantly lower than most other tentpole flicks in the genre. Production is scheduled to begin in New York this September. Source
  5. Ever look down at your watch as you wait for the bell to toll, or the Sandman to enter, or even the day that never comes? Well, if so, there’s a new line of Metallica watches that will help you pass the time. The metal titans have teamed up with watchmaker Nixon for a series of timepieces called the Nixon x Metallica hardcore collection. The watches feature images representing the band’s classic albums like Kill ‘Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, …And Justice for All, and “The Black Album”, as well as their most recent disc, Hardwired… To Self Destruct. The band previously joined forces with Nixon for a serious of custom watch bands in 2010, with proceeds going to the Musicians Assistance Program. Retail prices on the watches range from $150 to $500, with a limited-edition $750 “Sanitarium” watch also available. The watches will be available on November 5th, but pre-orders are already being taken at Metallica.com, where you can see all the designs in the collection. The band promises more items from their collaboration with Nixon in 2019. In the meantime, fans can catch Metallica on their fall U.S. tour, which kicks off September 2nd in Madison, Wisconsin. 6. “Weird Al” Yankovic received his Hollywood Walk of Fame star on Monday. The hour-long ceremony took place in Los Angeles, across from the famous TCL Chinese Theatres, and featured glowing speeches from actor Thomas Lennon, veteran radio broadcaster Dr. Demento, and Mitch O’Farrell, a member of the local City Council. Known for his ingenious, Grammy-winning parody songs, Yankovic eventually took the stage to thank his fans. “Dreams do come true,” he said of the star, which he’d specially requested to be placed near two of his favorite music icons, Hee Haw host Roy Clark and Barry White. (He also kindly asked it to be “within 200 feet of a Hooters.”) “My name is gonna be walked on, spit on, and let’s face it… urinated on for generations to come,” the 58-year-old continued on with his speech. “That’s a legacy, my friends.” Before unveiling the star, Yankovic had one last request to make. “Please, please don’t pickaxe my star,” he said, referencing Donald Trump’s own ill-fated star. “I know it’s all the rage these days, but that’s not cool. That’s rude.” “Please don’t do that,” he added. “…Unless at some point in the future I do something unfathomably monstrous and evil, in which case, go ahead… it makes sense.” As NBC 7 points out, Yankovic is the 2,643rd recipient of a Walk of Fame star since its completion in 1961. His last album, 2014’s Mandatory Fun, won a Grammy for Best Comedy Album. One of its singles, “Word Crimes”, debuted in the Billboard Top 40, “making him one of four artists to have had Top 40 singles in each of the last four decades along with Michael Jackson, Madonna and U2.” Yankovic recently joined Weezer live for an accordion-filled cover of the Toto classic “Africa”. Check out the full ceremony below, followed by a few choice screenshots from the stream. Source
  7. Origins is a recurring new music feature that tasks an artist with revealing the inspirations that led to their latest song. Advance Base’s Owen Ashworth (formerly of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone) writes lyrics so intimate and empathetic that you’d be forgiven for thinking him a confessional songwriter. However, he’s quick to point out that the majority of his songs are rooted in fiction, though that doesn’t diminish their emotional heft; if anything, his willingness to explore lends to the universality of his music. For example, you don’t need to be a dog person to love his new album, Animal Companionship, you just have to fathom how love manifests in the pet-owner relationship. On lead single “True Love Death Dream”, Ashworth explored how pets can become welcome repositories for a love that’s been lost. On its follow-up, the tender and heartfelt “Dolores and Kimberly”, he showed us the joys that accompany new love alongside the consequences of abandoning an old one. His newest track, “Your Dog”, is a more lighthearted tune, but gorgeous in its warmth and simplicity. Driven by breezy plinks on Ashworth’s electric piano, the song finds Ashworth’s narrator reflecting on times past after seeing the dog of an old acquaintance in front of a coffee shop. It’s filled with lines both charming (“Don’t do the crosswords on Sunday/ I can feel dumb other ways”) and melancholy (“I don’t miss feeling bad and dreading every call/ The constant screaming dialogue/ I swear that there were some days/ I felt like I was only coming around for your dog”) and even culminates with some barks of Ashworth’s own. Hear it below. “‘Your Dog’ isn’t about a real dog,” Asheworth tells Consequence of Sound. “Like most of the songs I write, it’s mostly made up, with bits of real-life memories stuck in here and there. I honestly don’t remember why I decided to write a song about seeing someone else’s dog tied up in front of a coffee shop. I don’t remember that ever happening to me. There are a few details from the song that were absolutely inspired by actual things from my life, though.” Asheworth has shared a few of those Origins below along with some of the music that inspired “Your Dog”. A coffeeshop in Oakland, CA that I don’t remember the name of: Illustration by Owen Ashworth Years ago, long before I met my wife and left California for Illinois, I dated a woman who lived in Oakland. I often spent weekends at her apartment, and in the mornings, she’d send me down to her neighborhood coffee shop to pick up two coffees to go, one for each of us. It was a nice coffee shop, and I enjoyed the walk and the morning routine. We eventually broke up, and a few months after, I found myself driving past that same old coffee shop on a Sunday morning. I stopped at the corner for a man in the crosswalk carrying two coffees. As he was walking across the street, I noticed that he was wearing the T-shirt that I’d brought back from Japan as a gift for my ex-girlfriend, and I immediately knew who the second coffee was for. It was a funny moment, equally sweet and sad. My ex-girlfriend didn’t have a dog, but I guess I had that memory in the back of my mind when I wrote the first verse of “Your Dog”. The New York Times Sunday crossword: Illustration by Owen Ashworth I’ve never been very good at crossword puzzles, but even longer ago, back when was living in Portland, OR, I had a housemate named Lisa who was VERY good at crossword puzzles. We both had Sundays off of work, so most Sunday mornings, Lisa would buy The New York Times and we’d walk over to our neighborhood coffee shop together. We’d sit outside with our coffees, and Lisa would do the NYT crossword puzzle, and I would barely help. We’d run into friends at the coffee shop, and they’d say things like, “You guys love crossword puzzles!” And Lisa would say, “Yeah, we sure do!” or something like that. Lisa eventually moved away to New York, and I stopped going to that coffee shop, but every once in a while, one of those friends would call me “Mr. Crossword” or otherwise insinuate that I was great at crossword puzzles, and I’d feel like a fraud. I guess I’m still self-conscious about being bad at crossword puzzles, because here I am, fifteen years later, singing about being bad at crossword puzzles in a song about a made up dog. The Kinks – “Do You Remember Walter”: I first had the idea for “Your Dog” a few years ago, but it took me more than a year to finish the song, partly because I had a really hard time deciding what to name the dog. The Kinks’ Village Green Preservation Society is in pretty regular rotation at my house, and listening to this song in my I am a fagget on a Sunday morning not only gave me the idea to name the dog Walter, but it also gave me a sense of where the entire Animal Companionship album would take place. I imagined the village green as a dog park where all of the album’s characters and their dogs would come hang out on Sunday mornings. I ended up cutting a couple of songs that made the Kinks connection a little more obvious, but the entire Village Green Preservation Society album (and “Do You Remember Walter”, in particular) was a giant inspiration. Biz Markie – “Just a Friend”: I’ve loved “Just a Friend” since middle school, and it has inspired a bunch of different Casiotone for the Painfully Alone and Advance Base songs over the years. The original four-track demo for “Your Dog” was set to a big, boom bap-style drum loop that I patterned after the “Just a Friend” break (which Biz Markie sampled from Lee Dorsey). It wasn’t until I was mixing my second attempt at a demo that I decided that the song worked a lot better without drums. I still liked the tempo and feel of playing along with my Biz Markie rip-off drum loop, so Jason (Quever, Animal Companion’s engineer and co-producer) and I used it as the click track when we recorded the final album version. Maybe I’ll release the original “big drums” demo someday, if I can find the tape. Moog Opus 3: Owen Ashworth’s Moog, photo by Owen Ashworth The slow pulse you hear throughout “Your Dog” is a single taped-down key from Palmetto Studio’s resident Moog Opus 3. The song was otherwise finished and mixed when Jason suggested that it could use some additional propulsive element. I’d been eyeing the Moog sitting in the corner of the studio for days, so we decided to give it a try. After a couple of minutes of messing with the Moog’s VCF modulation, I taped down the lowest “A” and we hit record. This ended up being the only song on the album featuring the Moog, but that one note sent “Your Dog” straight into outer space. It’s my favorite sound on the album. Source
  8. The metal world was shocked and saddened at the news that Vinnie Paul had suddenly passed away at the age of 54 in late June. Now, TMZ reports that the Clark County Coroner has revealed the legendary Pantera drummer’s cause of death. The beloved metal drummer, who also played in Hellyeah and Damageplan, died of a dilated cardiomyopathy, otherwise known as an enlarged heart, as well as severe coronary artery disease. Both are considered natural causes of death. Vinnie’s body was found at his Las Vegas home. He was buried in Texas in a Kiss Kasket, provided to the family by Gene Simmons. The drummer’s late brother, Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell, was also buried in a Kiss Kasket after he was fatally shot onstage in Columbus, Ohio, while performing alongside Vinnie in Damageplan in 2004. In addition to the funeral, a public “Celebration of Life” event took place on July 1st at The Bomb Factory venue in Dallas. A few days later, Pantera singer Philip Anselmo, who hadn’t spoken with Vinnie in many years, paid tribute to the late drummer by performing the Pantera song “Slaughtered” with his band Scour. 10. One of life’s greatest hurdles is figuring out who you are, but Girl Friday could care less. The Los Angeles quartet calls themselves a “genre-confused rock band,” and they’re totally okay with that. Besides, how else would you label a group that’s as easily influenced by ’70s surf rock as they are with mall goths or witchcraft? Now, they’re getting ready to compete against nine other acts to score an opening gig for ScHoolboy Q at House of Vans Chicago on September 14th. It’s all part of Vans inaugural Share The Stage competition, which began earlier this year when over 150 artists traveled across the United States and Canada to get their voice heard. Both of these singles got immense applauds from all spectrums. ‘After Dark’ has made us feeling all sorts of ways with its high tempo riffs that have a psy-trance appeal. photo credit Seven Lions Fiora the singer, not the Grand Duelist, has collaborated heftily with Start Again. Often familiarized through her eloquent vocals, she remained recognizable, yet still impressed us with her dingy role in ‘After Dark’. The dark side wasn’t the only side that we saw of Fiora. We were blessed with all arrays of Fiora as she is featured on each track of the EP. Check out ‘Dark Side’ below: ‘Start Again’ and ‘Let Go’ are the newest and final additions. 14. Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins is continuing to build anticipation for his follow-up to last year’s The Healing Component, which is expected later this fall. He’s so far released two entries attributed to his or more series — the anxious mixtape and the frustration EP — as well as the recent single “Bruce Banner”. Today, he’s shared another new track called “What Am I to Do”. Produced by past collaborator and Polaris Prize winning producer Kaytranada, “What Am I to Do” has a slick, twinkling beat, like a drive down a neon-lined city street. Over the soulful sounds, Jenkins drops bars about the hard work he puts into his lifestyle and being the best: “They gave us nothing, had to hustle same way coffee cook/ Early morning grind trying to help these niggas wake up/ Etch A Sketch flows, I got the shit to shake up.” Take a listen below. Hopefully we’ll get some more news on Jenkins’ upcoming album soon. Kaytranada, meanwhile, recently shared some re-edits of classic tracks by A Tribe Called Quest and Sade. “What Am I to Do” Artwork: Source

  17. Some people cry. Others give him the finger. For Sia, her run-in with Donald Trump actually resulted in the runs. The “Chandelier” pop star revealed the shitty meet-up story in a new interview with Rolling Stone. It was 2015 and she had been tapped as the musical guest on an episode of Saturday Night Live hosted by the future president. Sia encountered the businessman-turned-fake-politician in the hallway backstage while on her way to her dressing room. Trump was adamant about snapping a photo with her, and that’s when her bowels began rebelling. “We’ve got to get a photo!” Trump exclaimed, per Sia’s recollection. She declined as professionally as possible, saying, “Actually, do you mind if we don’t? I have a lot of queer and Mexican fans, and I don’t want them to think that I support your views.” Despite Sia’s fears of immediate retaliation, Trump miraculously did not throw a childish tantrum onsite. “Oh, no problem,” he replied coolly according to Sia, “Then don’t.” “It was as if he viewed me as protecting my brand,” reflected the “Elastic Heart” singer. Sia said she thanked him for understanding, but ultimately couldn’t stop her body from physically reacting to Trump after they parted ways. “And then I went into my dressing room and had crazy diarrhea,” she remembered. 20. The man responsible for supplying Demi Lovato with the drugs that led to her overdose last month spoke candidly about the incident in a new interview with TMZ. Brandon Johnson admitted on camera to providing Lovato with “aftermarket pills,” which they smoked together in the early morning hours of July 24th. Johnson said Lovato had fallen asleep when he left her house, but maintained she showed no signs of distress. “100%… she knew what she was taking,” Johnson said. “I disclosed to her that these were not pharmaceutical, they’re after market pills… they’re much stronger. She understood fully. It was unfortunate what happened, but for anyone to think there was any misconception on my behalf is absolutely ridiculous. ” Later, when asked if the incident was a “wake up call,” Johnson answered, “It’s definitely a wake up call for her, and for me, it definitely opens my eyes to the dangers of these drugs. In the wrong hands and in the wrong usage, they can be hurtful. I’m not trying to hurt my friend, she’s a really good friend of mine.” As TMZ points out, Johnson was arrested in March after being found in possession of drugs, guns, and cash. The follow month, he was arrested again and charged with a DUI and possession of cocaine. He has not yet been charged for his role in Lovato’s overdose, but something tells me his on-camera confession might expedite that process. For Lovato’s part, she recently entered an out-of-state drug rehab facility. Source
  21. Twenty-five years after gracing TV screens in 1993, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are still chugging along, fitting a new cast of twentysomething “teens” with colorful spandex and interlocking robots each new season. Part of this is baked into the show’s origins as an American remix of imported Japanese footage from the long-running tokusatsu show Super Sentai; however, changing up the cast and premise allows for the show to keep running with new themes, new Zords, and new toys to sell. Still, no matter how many Rangers the decades-old show goes through, the original teenagers with attitude will always have a special place in the hearts of 90s kids who grew up karate-kicking their friends a few too many times on the playground. While some of them mostly just enjoyed the 15 minutes of fame the show afforded them, others have launched into surprisingly successful and idiosyncratic careers. Let’s plug into the Morphin’ Grid and find out how these morphinominal teens fared after their time on the show ended. __________________________________________________________ Jason (aka the Red Ranger) Name: Austin St. John Last Seen: The low-budget kids’ movie Monsters at Large (2018), alongside Mischa Barton and Stephen Tobolowsky The original leader of the Power Rangers, Jason was the beefy jock who held the Power Sword and kept the team together through thick and thin. However, after the show took off, he and castmates Walter Jones and Thuy Trang asked for more money, only to get fired and replaced by replacement characters. Still, St. John managed to come back to the show in the follow-up series, Power Rangers Zeo, as the Gold Ranger, and make an appearance as a brainwashed version of Jason in Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie. (He also came back for “Forever Red”, the 10th anniversary episode that teamed up every Red Ranger to date.) He doesn’t have many IMDb credits apart from that (and the aforementioned Monsters at Large), but he remains a mainstay on the Power Rangers convention circuit. __________________________________________________________ Kimberly (aka the Pink Ranger) Name: Amy Jo Johnson Last Seen: The Canadian indie dramedy The Space Between (2017), which she also directed Arguably the actor to see the most successful career post-Rangers, Johnson’s also well-known for her three seasons on the hit J.J. Abrams show Felicity as budding singer-songwriter Julie Emrick. (Johnson herself is a semi-prolific musician in her own right, with three albums and a host of other contributions.) Apart from that, she guest starred on a bunch of TV, from Spin City to ER, as well as a few independent films. More recently, she played a member of a Toronto-based tactical police unit for five seasons on the Canadian police procedural Flashpoint (alongside Enrico Colantoni). Currently, Johnson is dipping her toes into directing, with two well-received short films (2013’s Bent and 2014’s Lines) and her independent dramedy The Space Between. And, of course, she made a welcome cameo in last year’s Power Rangers reboot. __________________________________________________________ Billy (aka the Blue Ranger) Name: David Yost Last Seen: The micro-budget crime flick Degenerate (2012), as a goateed punk The actor who played brainy Billy on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers had one of the most difficult post-Rangers careers. Within the show, he was the longest-lasting original ranger, staying on through all three seasons of the original Mighty Morphin and most of its follow-up season, Zeo (as Billy took on more of an advisory role to the team). Yost left the show most of the way through that season, and Billy was quickly written out. While people speculated that it was due to that classic PR chestnut of low pay, Yost revealed in a 2010 interview that he was relentlessly bullied on set by crew members and producers for being gay, which precipitated his departure from the show. This led to a tragic few years where he attempted anti-gay conversion therapy and even contemplated suicide. Thankfully, he has since recovered and moved on to TV producing and theater – and, of course, is a fixture at Ranger conventions. __________________________________________________________ Trini (aka the Yellow Ranger) Name: Thuy Trang Last Seen: The Crow: City of Angels (1996), as the villainous Kali While the thoughtful Trini was a valuable member of the original cast, actress Thuy Trang endured a far more tragic fate than her castmates. Like St. John and Walter Jones, Trang was let go in the middle of the show’s second season after a pay dispute; from there, however, she only had time for one other substantial role (a lead villain role in the sequel The Crow: City of Angels) before she was tragically killed in a car accident in 2001, at the age of 27. __________________________________________________________ Zack (aka the Black Ranger) Name: Walter Jones Last Seen: An angry fan in Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016) Yes, we’ve all heard the jokes about the black guy being the Black Ranger, but Zack was still the coolest kid in school, teaching his classmates that patented blend of karate and breakdancing he called “Hip-Hapkido.” (Oh, Power Rangers.) While Jones’ character suffered the same fate as Jason and Trini, Jones himself bounced back to a nice career in TV through the ’90s – he guested on an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and co-starred in the short-lived Nickelodeon sci-fi show Space Cases (alongside Firefly’s Jewel Staite). Of course, he occasionally went back to Power Rangers to voice the occasional monster – a common practice among former Rangers. Also, he apparently makes a cameo in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, which should prompt all of us to drag out our DVDs and look to see where he crops up in that hallowed franchise. __________________________________________________________ Tommy (aka the Green/White Ranger) Name: Jason David Frank Last Seen: Returning to Power Rangers, natch, for their 25th anniversary special episode of the show’s current iteration, Power Rangers: Super Ninja Steel The Godfather of Power Rangers, Jason David Frank’s Tommy Oliver remains the most popular Ranger of all time – and one of the longest-running. Ever since he joined the team halfway through the first season as the formerly villainous Green Ranger, the martial artist and actor stayed loyal to the show through nearly five more seasons of Putty-kicking mayhem. Over the course of his time on the show, he became the White then Red Rangers before eventually leaving with Power Rangers Turbo in 1995. Still, that didn’t keep him away for long, returning to the show in 2002 with Power Rangers Dino Thunder as the new team’s mentor (and eventual Black Ranger). He still crops up in anniversary specials from time to time and cameoed in the new movie (along with Johnson). Like the other Rangers, he’s also a frequent presence at conventions – which put him in the crosshairs of a crazed fan who was arrested for planning to assassinate Frank at Phoenix Comic Con in 2017. Since 2009, Frank has also enjoyed a prolific career as a professional MMA fighter – being a Christian, his catchphrase in UFC circles is, naturally, “Jesus don’t tap.” Never change, Tommy Source
  22. The fallout from the New York Times story alleging Asia Argento sexually assaulted her former co-star Jimmy Bennett when he was 17 years old continues. Over the weekend, word broke that Argento has been fired from her job as a judge on X Factor Italy. Bennett claims that just two months after his 17th birthday in 2013, Argento invited him to a Marina del Rey, California hotel room. There, he says, she gave him alcohol and had sexual intercourse with him. The Italian actress and figurehead of the #MeToo movement contends that her late boyfriend, Anthony Bourdain, personally paid a $380,000 settlement to Bennett in order to keep the allegations under warps, but Argento denies ever having sexual relations with the younger actor. However, recently leaked images and text messages purportedly sent between Argento and a friend contradict her story. The two are pictured naked in bed together and Argento appears to admit she had sex with him, though she does put the impetus for the encounter on Bennett. In light of the accusations, X Factor Italy producers FremantleMedia Italia and Sky Italia have parted ways with Argento. Six already recorded audition episodes featuring Argento in a judge role will still air, according to Sky Italia (via The Hollywood Reporter), in order to respect the efforts made by the 40,000 people who tried out for the singing competition. Replacing her entirely would require the production to start from scratch. When the live shows begin, however, there will be a new judge in Argento’s chair. Whom that individual will be is expected to be revealed during a Milan press conference on September 5th, the day before X Factor Italy’s 12th season begins. Argento has yet to comment on her firing. Argento, who is facing potential criminal charges, also recently pulled out of The Netherlands’ Le Guess Who? Festival, for which she had been a co-curator. Source
  23. Sharp Objects, the acclaimed HBO limited series starring Amy Adams, took its final bow Sunday night. Without giving too much away, the show’s finale finally revealed the identity of the killer who Adams’ character, Camille Preaker, had been in search of for the last seven, very tense episodes. Although the mystery’s now been solved, Sharp Objects’ showrunner and executive producer Marti Noxon believes there’s still plenty more stories to tell — certainly enough to warrant a second season. “The Camille at the end of the series feels a little more adult, and present in her own life, and even though there’s more truth to come, I still hope that people will feel like she’s been made more whole by knowing she’s not crazy,” she recently told The Hollywood Reporter. The key phrase here is “more truth to come” — a suggestion that last night’s finale may not actually be the show’s final episode. (Read: The Best TV of 2018… So Far) Previously, HBO confirmed Sharp Objects would not proceed with another season, mostly because its cast was not interested in returning. “Unlike Big Little Lies where all of the stars wanted to come back, Sharp Objects, it’s a very dark character, very dark material,” HBO president of programming Casey Bloys explained to Deadline back in July. “Amy doesn’t want to live in this character again and I can’t blame her, it’s a lot to take on for an actress… So no plans for a second season. We are very happy with this living as a limited series.” Noxon, who wrote the Sharp Objects finale and cut her teeth executive producing the original run of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, acknowledges that, in terms of personnel, a second season might be nearly impossible. However, she still sounds hopeful that perhaps the sheer desire to continue the Sharp Objects story — adapted from Gillian Flyn’s 2006 novel of the same name — will lead to more episodes. “It’s off the table in terms of, people are going on to their next projects, and it was a pretty hard A-team to assemble,” Noxon relayed to The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s not hard to imagine form [sic] a story standpoint, because obviously we love these characters, but from a technical standpoint it seems like a long shot.” There was a time that viewers thought they’d never see Nicole Kidman and the rest of Big Little Lies return to the screen, so maybe it’s still a little too soon to discount a similar fate for Sharp Objects. 24. Sad news from stoner/sludge metal band Weedeater, who report that their new drummer Carlos Denogean passed away on Friday (August 24th). Denogean joined the band in 2017 and had been touring with the North Carolina outfit for the past year. Weedeater have been around for 20 years, having formed in 1998. They have released five albums along the way, including their most recent disc, 2015’s Goliathan. Drummer Travis Owen replaced founding stickman Keith Kirkum in 2013, but had to leave the band in 2017 due to health reasons. That’s when Denogean took over behind the kit. In a message posted Saturday on Facebook, Weedeater announced Denogean’s death as follows: “There is no easy way to say this. Our dear friend and bandmate Carlos Denogean passed away yesterday. It is with a heavy heart and intense sadness that we bring you this unfortunate news. He left this world far too soon and will be missed immensely by all of us. Anyone that knew Carlos was enamored by his kindness and his warm personality. He was an incredibly talented musician and a real joy to be around. He brought something truly special to the band and we all loved working with him. We simply cannot express how devastated we are by this loss. We don’t know any details at this time and we ask that you please leave us to grieve now along with Carlos’ family. Thank you for all of your kind wishes. Cherish what you have while you have it.” Denogean’s passionate drumming can be seen in a video of the band’s March 2018 set at Saint Vitus in Brooklyn, New York, below. Thus far, no cause of death has been revealed. Our thoughts are with Carlos Denogean’s family, friends and bandmates during this difficult time. Source
  25. Sacha Baron Cohen’s controversial, intermittently brilliant Who Is America? wrapped up its first (and likely only) season on Sunday night, and the Showtime series went out in a shocking, if ultimately underwhelming, fashion by introducing none other than athlete, actor, and alleged murderer O.J. Simpson. The sequence came during the episode’s closing credits and found Baron Cohen, as Italian fashion photographer Gio Monaldo, having a sit down with the Juice. The intent of the meeting was to try and get Simpson to admit to killing his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman. Simpson was acquitted of the double murder in 1994, but has been grossly coy about whether or not he did it as of late. Unfortunately, Simpson didn’t crack, though not for Baron Cohen’s lack of trying. Baron Cohen offered Simpson a seven-figure cash sum if he’d reveal to Monaldo’s boss, a fictional Sheikh, that he actually committed the murders. While Simpson remained jovial throughout their meeting, he repeatedly insisted he “didn’t do it.” As such, Baron Cohen’s Monaldo needled Simpson with various jokes about how much he wants to murder his own girlfriend, jokes to which Simpson often chuckled and responded to by giving high-fives. Per Deadline, which shared a number of behind-the-scenes details on how the stunt came together: “This took preparation that included Baron Cohen spending hours with a former lead interrogator for the FBI, an expert in drawing out confessions. It also involved creating credible cover stories for the Sheik and Mansour, so that the lawyer who pocketed the fee and others could Google and feel they were dealing with real people. When Simpson didn’t take the bait, Baron Cohen’s Monaldo character had to be content with essentially calling Simpson a murderer continuously for a three minute stretch. The result is well, creepy. Said Monaldo: ‘What I hate about the press is you make a tiny little slip, and that’s all they remember you for. You’re not the O.J. the touchdown. You’re not the O.J. the movie star. You kill two silly people and suddenly, you’re O.J. the murderer.'” It’s some cringeworthy stuff, especially when Monaldo brought in an Italian girlfriend who knew Simpson not for his acting or athletic career, but only for his reputation as a cold-blooded killer. Of course, that didn’t stop Simpson from repeatedly mentioning how beautiful she was. Watch the clip below. Previous victims of Baron Cohen’s Who is America? included disgraced pedophile-turned-GOP senate candidate Roy Moore; disgraced sheriff-turned-GOP congressional candidate Sheriff Joe Arpaio; and several disgraceful GOP congressman who endorsed the arming of toddlers.
