  1. If there’s a producer that’s always grinding in the studio — it’s Skrillex. EDM, hip hop, rock, pop and beyond, he knows no limits when it comes to his art. This time, he appears to be working with multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning producer and songwriter, Khris Riddick-Tynes of The Rascals, Ty Dolla $ign and Wizkid. Art director Cooper Sebastian is also tagged in the photo below. Whether this is a hangout sesh, or these guys are making music together is unclear. But, we can’t imagine this room of talented people getting together and not collaborating on something. Skrillex most recently connected with Elohim on her new single, which can be heard here. Meanwhile, we’re still waiting on all this game-changing new music expected from the producer. We can’t wait to hear what’s next. 2. Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry was taken out of Madison Square Garden on a stretcher Saturday night (November 10th) after appearing as a guest performer at Billy Joel‘s ongoing monthly residence at the famed New York City venue. According to TMZ, Perry had just performed Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” with Joel (video below), and then collapsed backstage. Paramedics were called to the scene, where they placed a tracheal tube down Perry’s throat to clear his airway amid panic in his dressing room. They then placed him on a stretcher and rushed him into an ambulance, giving him oxygen along the way. Update: A rep for Perry issued a statement to Rolling Stone on Sunday morning, saying, “Following a guest performance during Billy Joel’s show last night at Madison Square Garden, Joe Perry experienced shortness of breath and was treated backstage by paramedics who gave the guitarist oxygen and used a tracheal tube to clear his airway before taking him to a hospital. This morning, Perry remains in the hospital where he is alert and responsive. The Aerosmith guitarist will be unable to appear today at Rock And Roll Fantasy Camp in Florida and apologizes to those attending. Perry is expected to return to the road later this month.” Prior to the press statement, radio personality Eddie Trunk tweeted that he heard the guitarist is “doing well today thankfully.” Sending my best to rock icon and friend ⁦@JoePerry⁩ . Joe was just with me on my last radio special from LA. I’m hearing he’s doing well today thankfully! Be well Joe!! https://t.co/vBnSJk7Eqf — Eddie Trunk (@EddieTrunk) November 11, 2018 Two years ago, Perry collapsed backstage at a Brooklyn gig while performing with his band The Hollywood Vampires. That situation also looked dire, but Perry pulled through and eventually rejoined the band on the road. Source
  3. Don’t expect Morrissey to play San Diego again anytime soon. On Saturday night, the English lothario was attacked on stage at the Copley Symphony Hall as he was beginning to close out his show with an encore performance of “Everyday Is Like Sunday”. As TMZ reports, a crowd of concertgoers rushed the stage with one appearing to land a connecting blow to Morrissey’s face. The assailant was put in a chokehold and taken away, while Moz immediately left the stage, which promptly ended the concert. Update: In a statement, Morrissey’s manager Peter Katsis disputed the insinuation that Morrissey was attacked by a fan. “Morrissey’s fans are not malicious. The fans were simply doing what they have been doing for almost 30 years. Trying anything they could do to jump onstage and touch him, or hug him. The fan in question was certainly more aggressive in reaching out for him than most, so security had to do their job and subdue the fan. That’s all it was.” Katsis added that “in the end no one was hurt, and no one was arrested.” Watch fan-shot footage of the incident below. Nevertheless, Morrissey put on one hell of a show, as you can see from the setlist below, which includes another healthy mix of Smiths songs and work from his solo catalogue. Peep it all below, including his remaining tour dates, which are currently still on the books. 4. If you’re like me, you may be wondering, “Why is Liev Schreiber hosting SNL this week?” Then, upon learning that he’s promoting the latest season of his Showtime drama, Ray Donovan, your next question may have been, “What’s Ray Donovan? … it’s on how many seasons now?!” The normally taciturn character actor was a weird fit for an SNL hosting gig, and he knew it: his opening monologue was an earnest, dry affair about how he’s kinda new at all this comedy stuff, telling the audience: “This is all about managing expectations.” Still, he acquitted himself nicely, even if he didn’t get the richest material to work with. Overall, Saturday Night Live felt like a sigh of relief at the results of the midterms, a milquetoast filler episode with only a couple bright spots. Here are some of the highlights. _______________________________________________________ THE PETE DAVIDSON FOOT-IN-MOUTH APOLOGY TOUR CONTINUES Not a week goes by without another controversy from Pete Davidson, and it’s honestly exhausting at this point. Give the poor burnout a break! Last week, he had to give sincere well wishes to former fiancee Ariana Grande the same night she released a diss track a half hour before the show; this week, he had to pop into Weekend Update to apologize to Texas Republican Representative-Elect Dan Crenshaw for jokes he made about his eye patch, which is actually a war wound he earned in his time as a Navy SEAL. Not only that, Crenshaw himself came on the show to offer a few well-delivered barbs at Davidson’s expense (“Pete Davidson looks like a Troll doll with a tapeworm”). While it’s still more than a little annoying that the onus is always on progressives to apologize for jokes in this heightened landscape – last week’s joke was actually at Pete’s expense for his flippancy, not Crenshaw – the gesture at least served as a well-intentioned olive branch to bridge political divides. SCHREIBER SETS EXPECTATIONS LOW As for the actual host of the show, Schreiber ended up in the background for a lot of his sketches – a reporter interviewing two Property Brothers-esque twins who accidentally drop double entendres about incest, the host of a podcast-themed awards show – but he at least handled the material with a certain level of comfort. The real highlight, though, was a House Hunters parody late in the hour in which he and Leslie Jones play the typical wine-swilling couple casually talking about their options, which grow increasingly absurd as the sketch goes on. There’s something about Schreiber’s matter-of-fact descriptions of bathrooms covered in towel racks or the intricate way he’d position himself on an upside-down toilet in one house that make the Tim & Eric levels of dada nonsense work. You haven’t lived until you’ve seen a couple casually roam around an invisible house with a cat on the roof. THE SHOW RELAXES AFTER THE MIDTERMS Now that the midterms gave the progressively-minded SNL cast and crew some breathing room, they pumped the brakes on the non-Update political content this time around. Apart from a so-so cold open giving Kate McKinnon’s Keebler-beast Jeff Sessions a final bow (complete with awkward cameo from Robert De Niro as Bob Mueller), the show largely avoided Trumpy topics altogether. The closest they came was a halfway decent Band Aid-esque anthem about the little things that both liberals and conservatives hate: the words “crotch” and “moist,” guys who make loud sounds at the gym, the noise the chip reader makes when your transaction is done, etc. It’s diverting enough, but all rather toothless in the end. (Which, to be honest, is all we can really expect from SNL these days.) Source
  5. Back in 2015, legendary Italian composer Ennio Morricone scored Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. The project marked Morricone’s first time scoring a Western film in 40 years and it earned him his first-ever Academy Award. Despite this, Morricone doesn’t have particularly pleasant memories of his time working with Tarantino, nor did he enjoy attending the Oscars. In a newly published interview with Playboy Germany (via Variety), Morricone criticized Tarantino for his “absolutely chaotic” working style. “He talks without thinking, he does everything at the last minute. He has no idea,” Morricone griped. “He calls up out of the blue and wants a complete score in just a few days. That’s not possible. It makes me so mad.” (Prior to The Hateful Eight, Tarantino asked Morricone to score Inglourious Basterds, but the composer declined, citing the film’s short production schedule.) From there, Morricone lambasted Tarantino as “a cretin” who “only steals from others and puts stuff back together again.” “There’s nothing original about that. That doesn’t make him a director,” Morricone noted. “He is nothing compared with the Hollywood greats, such as John Huston, Alfred Hitchcock or Billy Wilder. They had class. Tarantino simply recooks old dishes.” Morricone is also quoted as calling Tarantino’s movies “trash.” Regarding the Oscars, Morricone said he “was in pain from sitting down for so long, on the plane and at the ceremony. If I looked happy it was because I knew I would soon be getting away from that boring ceremony.” Morricone added that he has no desire to return to the U.S. with “its self-inflated pomposities and embarrassments like the Oscars.” Tarantino has yet to announce the composer for his next film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but we can probably count out a reunion with Morricone. 6. Last month, Lil Wayne finally gifted fans with the long-awaited Tha Carter V. On this weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live, Weezy promoted the album with a pair of star-studded performances. He teamed with Halsey for “Can’t Be Broken” and was joined by Swizz Beatz for “Uproar”. Additionally, Wayne appeared with Future in an SNL Digital Short. The pair joined Kenan Thompson, Pete Davidson, and Chris Redd for a rap song about loving big booty… but only “with permission.” Replay both performances and the Digital Short below. Prior to tonight’s performance, Lil Wayne revealed three new bonus tracks from Tha Carter V. There’s a new version of “What About Me” with a new verse from Post Malone; “In This House” with Gucci Mane; and “Hasta La Vista”. Listen to the three Source
  7. Last week, Pete Davidson found himself in hot water after making fun of GOP congressional candidate Dan Crenshaw for wearing an eye patch. Crenshaw, a former Navy Seal, was severely wounded during his third tour of duty in Afghanistan. Davidson’s comments were widely condemned and politicians from both sides of the aisle called on the comedian to apologize. On this week’s episode of SNL, Davidson did just that — with Crenshaw sitting by his side. During “Weekend Update”, the Congressman-elect made a surprise appearance to accept Davidson’s apology, but not before getting in a few rather funny burns. “Pete Davidson looks like if the meth from Breaking Bad were a person,” Crenshaw quipped. In an especially funny moment, Crenshaw’s cell phone rang to the tone of Davidson’s ex-fiancée, Ariana Grande and her song “breathin'”. Crenshaw closed his comments on a serious note. “But seriously, there’s a lot of lessons to learn here. Not just that the left and the right can still agree on some things, but also this, Americans can forgive one another,” he remarked. Watch the segment below. 8. Last month, All That Remains guitarist Oli Herbert tragically died at the age of 44, in what was described as an accident on his property. His body was found in a pond near his home, and now his widow has revealed his cause of death via a posting today (November 10th) on the musician’s Facebook page. Herbert’s wife, Beth, revealed that the guitarist died by drowning and that anti-depressants and a sleep aid were found in his system. She also explained why a scheduled public memorial for Herbert was abruptly canceled, citing concern for her own safety. Some comments questioned the seemingly cheery introduction to her post, in which she said, “indeed it IS a good morning” before going on to give details of Herbert’s death. Her entire post reads as follows: Good morning everyone this is Beth. And indeed it IS a good morning; Toxicology results are back as is the official cause of my husband’s death! Cause of death- Drowning Toxicology- Oli was apparently self-treating for manic-depression that has run in his family for several generations. Anti-depressants were found in his system, as well as a sleep aid. The psych meds found in his system were the same ones that a close relative has been prescribed for a long time, so he knew what to hunt down for the ‘treatment’. Seeing how he was not going (and WOULDN’T GO) to a doctor to get diagnosed with the issue and was not being prescribed the medications and monitored on them, it explains his occasional erratic behavior here at home. As far as why the memorial was cancelled; concern for my personal safety and home due to numerous threats to both is the reason. If anybody knows where Oli was getting the psych meds, please call CT State Police, Troop C in Tolland, CT.” When one person asked in the comments how Herbert ended up in the pond, Beth replied: “One of the drugs can have a hallucinogenic effect, also restlessness. Oli kept wanting to go outside that night before he disappeared and he kept walking towards the pond, which is a pitch black part of our property as well as very slippery.. Add to that fact that it was raining that evening. Apparently he left the house after I went to bed so I couldn’t stop him and bring him back inside.” Asked if the investigation was closed, Beth responded, “Absolutely not! We have to find where he got the meds.” All That Remains released their new album, Victim of the New Disease, yesterday (November 9th). They also revealed that Jason Richardson would serve as the band’s fill-in guitarist on their upcoming tour dates. Source
  9. During the beginning of Kayzo’s set on the main stage of EDC Orlando, some of the ornaments at the top of the stage caught fire. The blaze was minimal and was quickly contained by the Orlando fire department. A video of the fire was captured by @mrcalidre, which also appears to show the crowd being ushered away from the stage – clearly for safety reasons. Kayzo and Pasquale Rotella of Insomniac both tweeted at fans to let them know what was going on. After Kayzo’s set was scheduled for Alison Wonderland. It’s not clear at this time if Kayzo will return to finish his main stage set, but he will be performing 8:30 – 9:30 at the Corona Electric Beach stage. An official statement from Insomniac reads, “There was a small fire at the kineticFIELD stage, which was fully contained and extinguished by the fire department within minutes. No employees or attendees at EDC Orlando were injured. Music on the stage has resumed and performances will continue as scheduled.” Kinetic Field catches fuego #EDCOrlando . 10. By this point, Ultra Music Festival’s proposal to move to Virginia Key has been well-documented. However, Mayor-Elect Mike Davey and the Village of Key Biscayne, which have both already expressed their disapproval of the festival, just released a video to the community which features blatant propaganda and false information about the festival. A statement released by Ultra Music Festival reads, “It is deeply regrettable that Mayor-Elect, Mike Davey and the Village of Key Biscayne have elected to publish statements that are knowingly false and misleading rather than to first seek to collaborate with either Ultra representatives or its City of Miami partners (if for no other purpose but to gather accurate facts and to gain an understanding of Ultra’s commitment and obligations respecting, traffic mitigation and environmental and historical preservation planning). “By opting to instead circulate what appears to be primarily stock photos (unrelated to Ultra) featuring used needles, polluted shorelines, traffic gridlock, by falsely and intentionally reporting that potentially hundreds of thousands of attendees will be converging on the Rickenbacker Causeway and by falsely stating that City of Miami had purportedly evicted Ultra for environmental destruction, increased alcohol and drug-related violence, safety risks and by reporting other untruths is blatantly disreputable.” While there are certainly obstacles that Ultra will face if a move to Virginia Key is approved, the images of “used needles, polluted shorelines, traffic gridlock” are purely a scare tactic by Key Biscayne Mayor-Elect Mike Davey. “It unfairly disparages our brand and potentially criminalizes our patrons” says Ray Martinez, Ultra’s spokesperson. The tentative vote on Ultra’s move to Virginia Key is scheduled for November 15. Watch the video from Mayor-Elect Mike Davey below. Photo via Rukes.com This article was first published on Your EDM. 11. “I think it just naturally happened.” We all need rock in our lives, and Pretty Vicious is my next recommendation for that. Introducing the UK band that recently signed to Big Machine / John Varvatos, Pretty Vicious comes with a ferocious bite and an electric spirit. They have the elements of the best rock sound with screaming guitars and abrasive drums with intense vocals all intertwined into a melody, they’re just the band the doctor for angst ordered. Pretty Vicious’ forthcoming debut album is a project to capture the emotions of the rebellious youth! Full of energy and attitude, this Welsh valley-boys stole the music souls of many and captured the London streets with their sound. They recently released their single “Move” and more recently just came out with an amazing new music video to accompany the track giving the fan a visual to enjoy. I had the pleasure of interviewing Jarvis from the band to discuss some of their journey, the music, and their future endeavors. “We became a band about 4 years ago [teenagers at the time], some of us were friends from school and some of us knew each other. We just met up one night, we were all by a campfire and we were all drunk, and Brad, the front man, he was in a cover band, and he was upset because they wouldn’t play any of his original songs, so he was looking for a band to play originals. So, he said let’s just get together and make a band and see what happens.” Simon SarinWhen directing the sound to rock, these guys knew exactly the path they were going to take. “I think it’s just the kind of thing we did. We all like rock music. I think it just naturally happened.” When I asked him about his favorite performance him and the guys ever did, he was excited to respond with his answer which he claims he always says. “I would say Japan, because when we went to Japan in 2015 and it was just such a surreal place to be and we would travel 12 hours on the plane to get to Japan, and there was people waiting for us to get off the plane with pictures of us and they all wanted signatures, and I didn’t even know how they knew which airplane we were on, they were all just waiting for us. And we then did a gig at Assault Festival (which is a big festival in Japan), and there were a loads of people there and there were people holding up the Welsh flag which is where we’re from, we’re all from Wales and it was just so surreal.” I then followed up with where would be one place he would like to perform in his life, and he was enthusiastic to say that Japan was the one, and that he really did make it to a place he has always wanted to perform in. He’d love to go back. He’d even love to move and live in Japan one day! The journey for these guys has been an exciting and definitely unreal experience. “It’s been a bit of a weird situation, like I see the band in steps, and we’ve had ups and downs and we were signed really young. Like we signed to Virgin when were all so young. I was 18, Brad and Tom were 17, and Elliott was only 15. It was good things were really good and then things went down and so were wondering how can we make this move forward again. We had like new management, a new record deal now, and I think it’s been really good. And we came to America.” I then wanted to know between the UK and the American music scenes, how that differed for him personally, to which he replied” with influences and performances, I’ve always liked watching live music. I listened to recorded UK bands, but I’d rather listen to Nirvana and other light rock bands. So it’s always been a privilege [to be in the US]. I’ve always wanted to have that American thing, but then with the UK thing as well. It’s nice to be one of them, we are from the UK, with a lot of great rock bands. But it would be nice to be one of those big American bands like the Foo Fighters. So, I’d say the scenes are very different, but I would prefer the American thing.” I then jumped into asking about the inspiration behind their new single from the upcoming album and the visual that went with it. “Brad wrote the song, and basically it’s just about in a club when you’re out all having a drink, and when guys are checking out the chics at the gig, and it’s just about having a good time and stuff and dancing, and the video we were just having a bit of fun, I really have no idea where the idea for the visual came from,” he chuckles. Continuing the conversation, my favorite question is always who would you love to collaborate with to which, with no hesitation Jarvis answered, “Queens of the Stone Age definitely. I think that could be possible.” Another one of my favorite questions to ask, but usually a tough for one for artists is what is your favorite track you’ve written so far. Jarvis explained, “m y favorite song is “Little Molly.” It’s an album track. It’s actually the last song on the track, and it’s like a six, seven minute ballad and it just starts off really slow and then there is this massive outro, where all of the guitars go mad and the drums go mad, but it’s really meaningful and it’s about like growing up and you’ve gotta listen to it to really get it, but that song gets me every time.” For the fans out there, I had to ask if there were any fun facts about the guys that we probably didn’t know. Jarvis laughed, thought for a moment and then began to spill how “Elliott the drummer, loves watching himself in the mirror, he’s full of himself.” He starts laughing as he prepares to start describing himself and the other guys saying, “Me and Tom are quite the lazy ones. We like to sleep in, me and Tom could sleep for hours. And Brad’s like, if you ever meet Brad, he’s like his own person. He’s like this little guy that gets up and does his own thing and Brad’s always in his little bubble. Brad’s always in his bubble, me and Tom are always sleeping, and Elliott’s always in the mirror.” He sums it up for me as we both laugh over the phone. I then asked him what is the best part about being a band rather than being solo, and he describes like this: “I think it’s the people you’re around. I think if I was solo I would never enjoy as much as I do with the boys and the band. It’s a friendship, like I said we met in school and stuff and so we’re just really friends and it’s really fun. It doesn’t seem like a job or anything. We just get on with it, like today we traveled out to do a music video but it doesn’t feel like we traveled up here to do a music video, we just came somewhere as friends. I think if it were solo it would be harder and this has just been such a massive journey together.” Advice for all you aspiring rockers out there? He’s the scoop from Jarvis himself: “Don’t stop, just keep doing it, never give up because there’s a lot of times where it feels like it could be the hardest thing in the world but if you keep going something will happen. The music will speak for itself. Just never never quite, just keep going for it. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t.” With not even a second to spare, when I asked Jarvis what was an album he could live with for the rest of his life if there was no other album in the world, he answered, “Ohhhhh Nirvana Nevermind for sure!” To end things off from our lovely conversation, Jarvis told me that Pretty Vicious is on the verge of “world domination,” which I’d say is a pretty vicious answer. 12. Most television comedies either jump the shark or go so far off the rails that they’re either a.) unrecognizable, b.) predictably lame, or c.) completely out of touch by season three. FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is none of the above. It’s an exception to the rule. Creator Rob McElhenney proved this last year with the series’ incredible 12th season, which included daring commentaries on race (“The Gang Turns Black”) and prejudice (“Hero or Hate Crime?”), but he truly went all out for this season’s stunning finale. The episode revolves around McElhenney’s character Mac, who’s urged by Frank (Danny DeVito) to dance on the gang’s gay pride parade float, having come out of the closet last season. Mac’s not feeling it, though, until he has a moment, one that’s unlike anything the show’s ever done. He opts to come out to his imprisoned father Luther (Gregory Scott Cummins), but rather than use words, he leans on interpretive dance, all set to Sigur Rós’ moving ballad, “Varúð”. It’s an emotional moment for a show that’s traditionally followed Seinfeld’s mantra of ” no hugging, no learning.” “We got a really overwhelming emotional response from the LGBTQ community last year,” McElhenney tells Vulture. “I took it seriously and I felt it would be completely unexpected to have this much more emotionally resonant end to the season. You would expect that Mac would express himself through the art of contemporary dance and it go horribly wrong, until you realize that’s not the direction we’re taking.” Never one to turn down a physical performance (see: Fat Mac), McElhenney participated in a rigorous diet and exercise routine prior to the season, meaning no alcohol, no carbs, no sugar, and a steady balance of weight lifting, running, and stretching. Following this, he worked extensively each week with choreographers Alison Faulk and Leo Moctezuma. Watch the sequence below and read the behind-the-scenes story at Vulture. Source
  13. Big Red Machine, the collaborative group comprising The National’s Aaron Dessner and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, made their TV debut Thursday night on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. In continued support of their first album, released over the summer, the indie rock pair performed “Gratitude”. Catch the replay below. (Aaron Dessner Talks About Big Red Machine and Future Plans for The National) Big Red Machine’s self-titled debut features Aaron’s brother and National bandmate, Bryce Dessner, The National’s drummer, Bryan Devendorf, Arcade Fire’s Richard Reed Parry, Lisa Hannigan, and Phoebe Bridgers, among others. While Thursday marked the duo’s first small screen appearance, they have performed at the last two installments of Vernon’s Eaux Claires Festival. In recent news, Vernon contributed to Eminem’s Kamikaze album, but has since distanced himself from their collaboration. “Not a fan of the message, it’s tired,” he said of the track “Fall”. Meanwhile, Dessner is set to take part in next month’s tribute concert to the late Frightened Rabbit frontman Scott Hutchison. Source
  14. Skrillex seems to have his hands in a lot of people’s music as of late. Although this isn’t something new for the electronic music mastermind, Sonny Moore’s workload in 2018 has resulted in less of his own material surfacing and more productions for artists across the board. From the new single “Connect” from Elohim, “Arms Around You” from XXXTentacion and Lil Pump, and even writing credits on a new song from Mariah Carey, Skrillex’s work can thrive with even the unlikeliest of collaborators. Enter Kelsey Lu: a classically trained cellist and singer-songwriter who has worked with the likes of Solange, Blood Orange, and Oneohtrix Point Never. Her latest single “Due West” features her talents on a alternative R&B instrumental that Skrillex has become proficient at pumping out. The soft percussion, haunting strings, and homesick lyics make this new Kelsey Lu song feel like a beautiful, albeit bittersweet moment. Paired with the new single, a new music video featuring lush landscapes and nocturnal venues match the aesthetic and mood that “Due West” sets forth. Check it out below. 15. It’s a crazy notion to think your favorite artist could be ghost produced. But, there are many instances where that is actually the case. Apparently it’s something Gareth Emery gets questioned about a lot and he’s setting the record straight. In an update titled THE GHOST PRODUCTION LOWDOWN (LONG) the iconic producer — known for hits including “Call To Arms,” “Concrete Angel,” “Long Way Home” and so many more — opens up the conversation about ghost production in music. He admits this is a “way more complex topic” than generally realized, but he gives an open and honest play-by-play from his perspective. “Me? On most of my good tracks I did *all* the production,” he explains. “But I’ve done some tracks, mostly remixes, where I was running out of time and someone else to do the heavy lifting to finish my demos.” On the flip side, he ghost produced some tracks back in the day. “In all honesty I’d fucking love to find a permanent engineer to finish up my tracks. It would allow me to focus entirely on writing music and songs, rather than spending 4 hours tuning a hi-hat that nobody notices anyway, and I’d likely release more music as a result.” “But nobody else really nails it so for now, it’s me.” Read the full post below. 16. At only 19 years old, Whethan has had a more eventful life than most. He’s been named on Billboard’s annual 21 Under 21 list, collaborated with Tom Morello and Portugal. The Man, a track performed live on Jimmy Kimmel, as well as Dua Lipa and Charli XCX. And let’s not forget when he nearly broke the internet earlier this year at Coachella when he brought Yodel Boy out on stage. Now, Whethan is ending the year with Life of a Wallflower Vol. 1, which could either be another EP or his debut album depending on who you ask. Spanning 8 tracks, the project features a number of high profile collaborations on top of the ones he’s already put out: HONNE, Bipolar Sunshine, Mascolo, Oh Wonder, and Broods. Overall, LOAW has a consistent flavor that is high-energy and punchy while still embodying a sort of unexpected maturity you might not generally see from a 19-year-old. It varies between higher and lower tempos, giving the work a great deal of diversity and making sure you never get bored. “Good Nights” is arguably his biggest song ever, pulling 46 million streams on Spotify along. Its placement in the middle of the project is no accident. “Together” and “Superlove” with Oh Wonder follow it, but LOAW finishes on a particularly strong note with “Be Like You” featuring Broods and “I Miss You.” The sounds get darker and more rough around the edges, bringing us back to the days of “Savage” with MAX and Flux Pavilion. If nothing else, Life of a Wallflower just proves Whethan’s versatility as a producer and songwriter. At best, it solidifies his placement atop the rising producers of the modern age and will undoubtedly earn him some higher billing at festivals. Though he just wrapped up his last tour in October, you can certainly expect him to hit the road again early in 2019. Check out Life of a Wallflower Vol. 1 below. 17. Once in a great while, there’s a special performance that comes around for just one fleeting night and completely steals your soul. That kind of set doesn’t happen very often, but when it does, it’s just that much more special. Case in point: RL Grime and Baauer. The two trap legends recently went head-to-head for one night only at Sydney’s Metro Theatre. The two opened up with an epic mix of Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” and RL Grime’s “Era” and never looked back. While only just a small group of humans witnessed this holy b2b madness, there’s an unofficial upload to battle off all the lingering FOMO. Shoutout to YouTube user Aiden Lynch for recording the entire performance. “Apologies for my yelling, the blown out audio, and the shitty cuts,” he says. “I didn’t want to run the risk of losing any footage.” Don’t apologize for this trap gold! We’re forever in your debt. Just five minutes into the set and our hearts are already filled to the max. There’s 1 hour and 35 to go. Watch RL Grime go b2b with Baauer right here. 18. As wildfires ravage across California, there are countless people left homeless and jobless, and entire communities being destroyed. Just yesterday we learned Machinedrum had to evacuate his home in Thousand Oaks due to the fires. Now, Wolfgang Gartner just shared he’s going through the same heartbreaking motions. This is some seriously devastating news. “evacuated,” he writes. “put all our irreplaceable possessions and cats in our cars and got out. at starbucks watching our neighborhood burn on the local news. you never think it’s gonna happen to you.” Just a week ago, Wolfgang released his Medicine EP. Machinedrum most recently put out a remix for The Glitch Mob’s “Enter Formless.” Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this strong force of Mother Nature. Everyone stay safe out there. 19. The Chainsmokers were targeted on the red carpet at the 2018 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show to dish on their television performance, collaborator Kelsea Ballerini, and the “Paris” inspired movie they’re working on. To no surprise, Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall gushed over the VS production and their “This Feeling” counterpart. But, they weren’t expecting to get asked about the “Paris” film project, a new and exciting venture for the duo. Apparently Mickey Rapkin, the author behind Pitch Perfect, heard the song and thought the concept would play out well on the big screen. Taggart opened up in the on-camera interview with Billboard… “He wrote an entire story, pitched it to us, and we re-worked all the parts we wanted to. It’s been about a year that we’ve been spending working on this pitch. And we went out and started pitching it to major film studios and TriStar bought it and now we’re producing a movie!” He also revealed there’s “tons” more in the works… “It’s all over the place, it’s not just one genre. We’re really excited. It’s scary for us because it’s a way for us to do something else creative. When you just do one thing creative, sometimes you get creative blocks and this is another place that we can put our creative efforts in, and we’re really excited for the future.” The Chainsmokers Talk “Paris” Movie Photo via Rukes.com This article was first published on Your EDM. 20. It’s been three years since Steve Aoki’s last Neon Future album, and the musical landscape has changed a lot, even since just 2015. Think about the fact, for instance, that Marshmello was barely a blip in the world; “Closer” by The Chainsmokers hadn’t come out yet; Zedd was still making EDM with True Colors. You get the idea. On Neon Future II, the collaborators that Aoki worked with were a sign of the times: Snoop Lion, Matthew Koma, Linkin Park, Walk Off The Earth, Harrison, Rivers Cuomo, and J.J. Abrams. Now three years later, Neon Future has expanded into five more songs than the previous iteration, and the collaborator list is similarly updated: Louis Tomlinson, Lil Yachty, Lauren Jauregui, Bella Thorne, Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World, Daddy Yankee and Elvis Crespo, and Bill Nye, among others. Neon Future III isn’t a lesson in production the same way that G Jones’ The Ineffable Truth was, nor is it a evolution of sound like RL Grime’s NOVA was. What Neon Future III is, and doesn’t pretend to be otherwise, is a fantastic collection of easy listening songs that are fun to dance to and are pretty safe. And that’s not a bad thing. The world needs safe songs, tracks to play at house parties and on long drives in the car. None of the songs on Neon Future III are “bad.” There isn’t a song I’d skip on the whole album, and even though it’s no production masterclass, that’s still saying something. “Neon Future III is a continuation of the narrative of the saga of the Neon Future concept. It’s been 3 years since Neon Future II came out,” said Aoki. “Neon Future has always been about crossing genres and also crossing outside of music. This time around, I made a song with Bill Nye. We did a song with JJ Abrams on Neon Future II and Ray Kurzweil on the first one. I always like to include all elements of musical inspiration in a song. It doesn’t have to just be about artists.” The album ends on an unexpected collaboration, “Noble Gas” with Bill Nye – yes, the Science Guy. The track is part spoken word, part apocalyptic prophecy, part dark electro banger. And it’s a perfect end note to a wildly enjoyable album. Check out Steve Aoki’s Neon Future III below. 21. Two months ago, YOOKiE were forced to cut their set short (read: kicked off stage) at New City Gas in Montreal for going “too hard.” It’s quizzical, because… that’s what they always do? It’s hard to believe the promoter booked them and thought they were going to play a light set. Well, somehow, it’s happened again. Last night at Rounders in Tuscaloosa, AL, YOOKiE were kicked off stage one again. Anthony of the duo posted on Facebook, “ON GOD the next person to kick me and my bro off stage is catching THE HEAVIEST hands in EDM. The owner and the promoter r getting bodied. [sic]” Apparently, even though Rounders seemed to be enjoying their set (at first), they soon grew tired of the heaviness. .@YookieMusic taking over The Rooftop in a big way pic.twitter.com/OqVyo7qiN7 — ROUNDERS (@RoundersUA) November 10, 2018 Let this be a lesson to promoters: LISTEN TO THE ARTISTS YOU BOOK! It’s just unfortunate this has now happened to YOOKiE twice. This article was first published on Your EDM. 22. It might come in five years or 50, but one-time Nirvana drummer and current Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl will one day get his own biopic. Grohl considered the possibility during a recent interview with 95.5 KLOS (via Tone Deaf), and didn’t hesitate to name the actor who he’d like to see play him. “I’m going for Shelley Duvall,” he said. “Like, look at Shelley Duvall from The Shining, she’s like, ’Get Away From Me! Get Away From Me!’. Like, that’s me. That’s totally me.” Sticking with the Shining theme, Grohl went on to say bandmate Taylor Hawkins should be played by Jack Nicholson, the film’s axe-wielding psycho killer. (Read: 12 Music Biopics We Wanna See) Obviously, Duvall and Nicholson have aged out of the roles by this point, but should there ever be a Shining remake… Grohl recently guested on Tenacious D’s new album, rocked the vote alongside the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and shared the stage with St. Vincent and Beck for a cover of Blondie’s “Rapture”. 23. We went through a whirlwind of emotions when Rezz first shared she was working on a remix for Porter Robinson… There was much excitement and anticipation. There was also a lingering anxiety that she might not ever finish or share it with the world, but all of those feelings were put to rest when it all came together, very quickly in fact, and she revealed that her “Divinity” Rezz Remix was complete. Her tour stop in Montreal at New City Gas last night proved to be the perfect setting to share this kind of magic. While Space Mom typically takes us on a dark, hypnotic journey, she traded all that in for the bursts of euphoria heard in Porter Robinson’s masterful track from Worlds. Rezz truly did the track justice and then some by working in her signature sound in a tasteful manner — both worlds perfectly collide. We absolutely love, can’t get enough of, and need this official remix in our lives right now. This is the best video we could find on the internet for you. Listen and experience the “Divinity” Rezz Remix for the first time right here. Let us know what you think! 24. Ever since Dillon Francis and Alison Wonderland shared the news that they were expecting a baby collab together, we’ve been waiting for a moment like this. EDC Orlando was treated to an unfinished, work-in-progress version of Dillion and Alison’s track last night. It definitely took the crowd by surprise, but they went crazy for it. Now, we can, too. In the first video below, Francis takes to the mic to introduce his friend and collaborator. “…the only friend that would come with me. We also have a new song that we want to play you. It’s not done yet, but right here I’ve got Alison Wonderland, one of my favorite people ever.” She hypes the crowd for a moment as they start up the track, but the forthcoming single is one that needs no introduction. Alison’s widely recognized voice echoes out over the speakers in the next video — trying to find where I lost my mind / going insane / it’s all a game / don’t know my name / cuz I lost my mind. Then, the drop erupts into a blend of her signature future bass style and a really gnarly growl. The collababy is still in the oven, but it’s definitely cooking! Watch right here. 25. A number of wildfires are raging across California, forcing tens of thousands of residents to flee their homes. That includes Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker, who evacuated a home where he was staying at in Malibu. Unfortunately, Parker had to leave behind much of his gear, which was subsequently destroyed in a fire. “RIP to all this gear (and someone’s beautiful house) in Malibu. I made it out with my laptop and the Hofner. My heart breaks for the wildlife,” Parker wrote in an Instagram post. The California wildfires also burned down the homes of Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson and Caitlyn Jenner, as well as the Paramount Ranch, where HBO’s Westworld was filmed. Source
