We charge between $350-$2k depending on the gig. the difference in clients that you get at $250 compared to $450 is night and day, the $450 parties are always great and never have an issue with payment etc. Everyone has to start out somewhere, but dont price yourself too low otherwise you will only get crappy gigs and no respect from your customers.

what clubs did you play at in adelaide? -
i bought a 600 from DMC, its not bad, one slightly dodgy effect button but its to be expected from something 8 years or so old. I paid $500 and they gave a 30 warranty on it (why i bought from there rather than Gumtree).

what was expected price? you could buy a black pair for about $2k less, so Im surprised they got this much seeing as there are going to be 500 sets released anyway. -

Rookie questions. (noob alert)
GriffinAlliance replied to bhootnike's topic in Beginner DJ Tips & Tricks
MIDI is a communication protocol standard, so it can be used for lighting, music etc. bhootnike I would recommend that you just Google all the questions you have, look up wikipedia, look through this forum and also the Traktor and Serato websites etc. People on this forum can give you quick answers but you really need to do the research yourself to get a deep knowledge. There should be heaps of bhangra DJs around, just look on facebook and youre sure to find some. -
Im not sure if anyone here has actually taken a course in DJing here in melbourne, but if you have could you give me some feedback? Which one did you do, was it expensive, what did you learn etc? We used to do our DJ training internally but I would like to know if people have done a DJ course then what skills can I expect them to have on completion. There seems to be a lot of variation from past experience!

i would say if you have a great laptop and no cash go for the s4, its on sale now for about $800-900. if you want to do gigs then i would say buy some second hand CDJ400s and a mixer. then you can plug your laptop and use the internal CDJ soundcards and HID (which the CDJ850 doesnt have and probably wont support) with traktor, or you can use CD etc. If you want to play gigs out then always have a backup, you'll need a second laptop or CDs/USBs in case someone pours a beer on your laptop at a gig.

Rookie Question about CDJ's+DJM's with Traktor
GriffinAlliance replied to Jarred's topic in Beginner DJ Tips & Tricks
I think if you plug into the 900 mixer then you will use traktor timecode (CD or turntable) in the CD players. If you plug direct into the CDJs then I think you can use the inbuilt sound cards. Im guessing but I would say plugging into the CDJs direct would have less latency. -
thanks guys, interesting hats you got here

Howdy! My name is Daniel and I run a DJ business called Griffin Alliance out of Melbourne. I've been DJing about 9 years now on everything from Technics 1200's, CDJ100s -> 2000s and moving across (slowly) to Laptop as the technology is evolving. Cool DJ forum and I like that it's inclusive of the younger peeps trying to get into the industry.

We had 3 DJs apply last year, so here's what i got to see. I also went to see our guys perform too. 2 went as a duo and 1 went solo to the interviews, i also know quite a few other people that went to interviews too. interviews are really quick, like 5 mins or less usually. Not sure what they are looking for but they make a snap decision. They give you DJ training, which seems to be to a good standard, though for the DJs that didnt know how to DJ before they started they were generally pretty crap on performance day as most didnt have decks at home... From memory the tickets were $20 a head and the DJs didnt get set times until the day of the competition (i only wanted to see our crew and was irritated that they wouldnt release times). Generally if you sold more tickets then they put you in a later slot. They get graded on "Crowd Response" so obviously you will get more on main stage instead of a side stage and if you are on a later set rather than at 2pm in the afternoon on the sunday. Funnily enough a House/Electro DJ won the competition last year. Would have been awkward if a Dubstep DJ won it I say go for it, the worst you get is free lessons meet some people and rock up and play a set. Just dont get too sucked into the whole "You could the next Tiesto" thing.
