Electric Forest 2019 revealed the dates and lineup for the 9th annual run of the incredible festival to be June 27th – 30th. Announcing they will be reducing the festival back to one weekend! Photo Credit – Electric Forest The news quickly caused a commotion across social media after a post to the EF Instagram over the weekend stating; During the next year the Electric Forest grounds will see many exciting improvements that include upgraded landscapes, areas with new grass, and infrastructure improvements across the site. Most importantly, a new multi-year Sherwood Forest conservation plan will take effect. Protecting and curating the grounds of Electric Forest for generations to come is important to all of the Forest Family. The impact that comes with two weekends will need to be reduced for the new improvements to take hold. With conservation and longevity in mind,#ElectricForest will be one magical weekend in 2019: ElectricForestFestival.com/see-you-in-the-forest-june-27-30-2019/See You In The Forest, June 27 – 30, 2019! #EF2019 Though the festival will be returning to one weekend, the lineup is still just as amazing. In today’s edition of totally unexpected collaborations, rapper Juice WRLD and Panic! at the Disco frontman Brendon Urie have linked up for a new song. It’s dubbed “Roses” and also features Benny Blanco, a producer and songwriter whose credits include Rihanna, Sia, and The Weeknd. While nobody may have ever been able to predict such a team-up, the meeting of these two minds isn’t completely implausible. Panic! have been staples of the emo scene for over a decade now, and Juice WRLD has helped usher in the new wave of so-called “emo rap”. Looking no further than the hook on “Roses”, you can see where these two lyricists might click. “Roses are red, violets are blue/ My heart is dead, I’m such a fool,” Juice WRLD expresses his oh-so-emo regrets, presumably with studded Hot Topic belt on, too. “Why did I fall for you? I gave it all for you.” Uhh thanks, Benny, for bringing these two artists together? Hear it for yourself below. Juice WRLD and Future released their collaborative album, WRLD on Drugs, in October. Panic!’s last record, Pray for the Wicked, dropped back in June, though Urie has a “metal project” supposedly on the horizon. Source

Next year will mark the 20th anniversary of veteran emo rock outfit Taking Back Sunday. To celebrate, the band is putting out a career-spanning compilation album, aptly titled, Twenty. Along with some of the biggest TBS hits, the collection comes with two all-new songs, “A Song for Dan” and “All Ready to Go”, which are said to “hint at the direction that the band are heading in.” In anticipation of the LP’s January 11th release, the latter track has today been unveiled. Here, TBS document the unfortunate collapse of a relationship over a shifting blend of modern post-hardcore pop punk. “I taste that devil’s water/ At home but didn’t bother,” they sing in the opening verse, acknowledging that they should’ve seen the breakup coming. “I was livid and you weren’t listening/ It didn’t matter cause you were leaving… You were all ready to go.” Hear it down below. To correspond with the new song, TBS have also announced more dates for their 20th anniversary world tour, this time for the UK. Every show on the upcoming world tour will find TBS performing their 2002 debut, Tell All Your Friends, along with a selection of catalog classics. If the band is in your town for two straight nights, the second night’s set will find them playing Tell All Your Friends and either Where You Want to Be or Louder Now in full (they’ll choose which via a coin toss). Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan will unleash a solo album in 2019. McKagan has been toiling away with producer Shooter Jennings on what the GN’R legend considers his creative follow-up to his 2015 book, How To Be a Man (And Other Illusions). The new tunes were inspired by McKagan’s experience traveling the world on Guns N’ Roses’ epic Not in This Lifetime tour. “I wrote a couple of articles about historical places I passed through on this last tour, and people kept asking if that was going to be the focus of my next book,” he said in a statement. “But an unseen and irrepressible force guided me to write little vignettes of reflective prose …little instant-reactions.” He added, “The heartbreak, anger, fear, confusion and divide I have experienced over the last two and a half years of traveling this globe of ours coerced these words into songs that tell my truth, and one that I hope will spread and help us all. I do this for my daughters … I do this for my love of where I grew up …I do this because I truly feel it must be done and said right now.” Jennings chimed in, “From the first night we sat together at my piano hashing out arrangements of his songs, before going into the studio to record them, I felt it was a really important record that had to be heard. The songs have so much heart and are so musical that I could just hear all the arrangements immediately and I could really feel them.” McKagan and Jennings have been working at Station House studios in Echo Park, California, since March of this year. The two have been friends for nearly two decades. “I met Duff right after I moved to Los Angeles nearly 20 years ago,” Jennings said. “I was such a massive Guns N’ Roses fan when I was younger. I’d say that they had a lot to do with me even moving to L.A. But there was some kind of magnetic force, I guess, that kept us orbiting each other over the years. When the idea of collaborating with him on this album came up, I was very eager to get the job as producer.” “I felt like the music this man made was part of the fabric of my own musical identity and that I would really love building a record with him,” he added. “Once we sat down and started going over the songs he had, I instantly knew that the two of us were going to be a great fit together.” Guns N’ Roses will wrap up their 2018 tour dates with their first-ever show in Hawaii at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu this Saturday, December 8th. Origins is a recurring new music feature in which we allow an artist to share the influences behind their latest song. If you don’t recognize Kyle Crane, take a look at his hands, because you’ve seen them if you’ve seen the Oscar-winning 2014 film Whiplash. Crane served as Miles Teller’s drum double on the film, which saw his sticks blur throughout several dizzying solos. So, yes, Crane is an incredible drummer, and he’s flexed his skills on tour with artists like M. Ward and Neko Case. Now, however, he’s ready to share his own music, and he’s recruited quite the lineup to help him do it. On January 18th, Crane will release his debut album, Crane Like the Bird. “I’ve always had songs, but you keep putting them on the shelf when you’re a sideman,” Crane said of finally putting out his own music. The effort features contributions from a diverse range of artists that includes Ward, Conor Oberst, Daniel Lanois, The Shins’ James Mercer, Peter Bjorn and John’s Peter Morén, jazz pianist Brad Mehldau, Brazilian Girls’ Sabina Sciubba, and Empire of the Sun’s Luke Steele. An autobiographical collection, Crane Like the Bird explores the period of time leading up to his father’s 1997 death in a plane crash, as well as the impact it had on his family. Crane’s father’s influence extends beyond just the music — the physical edition of the album includes his father’s old pilot logs and maps, as well as a cover photo that depicts his mother at the site of her husband’s crash on the cliffs of Mendocino, throwing a rose out to sea. Today, Consequence of Sound is stoked to premiere “Nicole”, a collaboration with Band of Horses singer Ben Bridwell. Despite the album’s heavy themes, the effervescent single serves as an ode to Crane’s sister. It’s as joyful as it is wistful, brimming with the kinds of pop culture touchstones that drew friends, strangers, and even siblings together in the ’90s. “This song is about honoring my sister,” Crane explains. “She is a very strong woman who has been through a lot. She got pregnant in high school and became a single mother when the father died of a drug overdose. The chorus takes us back to simpler times.” Below, check out a video for the cut that features adorable home videos of the song’s namesake. Pre-orders for Crane Like the Bird are going on now. Read on as Crane details the deeply personal Origins of “Nicole”, which encompass photographs, films, and video games. Photo of Nicole and Jeff Crane: This photo helped inspire “Nicole”. In it is my sister, Nicole, and our father Jeff. They had the same birthday and my dad would say, “She is the best gift I ever got.” There are other elements in this image that come up in the album, such as the helicopter and picture frame. Photo of my sister and I in Humboldt, CA: This is my sister and I with our dog Sequoia. We would spend as much time outdoors as we could. On the night before our first day at school she cut her bangs herself and completely mangled them. She showed up to school the next morning and carried herself as though there was nothing out of the ordinary. Six years later at her high-school graduation ceremony she was visibly very pregnant and she walked across the stage to receive her diploma with total confidence. The Neverending Story: At the time this was the most devastating thing I had ever seen in a film. I didn’t get the metaphor as a kid I just felt hopeless and bawled my eyes out. Watching it as an adult I see that it’s a beautiful metaphor. Only you can decide to press onward. My sister had many opportunities to drown in the swamp but she always found a way out. Nintendo: When I was a kid my sister was like, “Hey the neighbors have this thing that’s really cool, lets go over there.” That was my introduction to Nintendo. I can remember vividly that first time we sat on the floor and played it. Source

Following his acclaimed AlunaGeorge collaboration earlier this season, rising R&B singer Cautious Clay has returned today with another new single. It’s titled “Reasons” and features additional writing assistance from Tobias Jesso Jr. (Adele, Florence and the Machine) and co-production by Pusha-T associate and former TNGHT member Hudson Mohawke. “Drama in my life on purpose/ ‘Cause I don’t need to have purpose,” the Brooklyn-based singer opens the track, his silky vocals wrapped close to Mohawke’s relaxed, dancehall pop-hinted production. “Throw it all away make ends/ Fucking up my night to keep friends.” Take a listen below. “Reasons” Artwork: “Reasons” is the first single from Clay’s upcoming EP, due out early next year. The effort follows his Blood Type EP, which came out in February and featured the breakout single “Cold War”. In related news, Clay talked about “Cold War” and his newfound success on a recent episode of Kyle Meredith With…, which can be streamed below. Beyond her collaborative boygenius EP with Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus (one of the year’s best efforts), Phoebe Bridgers has spent 2018 piling up the covers. There was that surprising take on Japandroids “The House That Heaven Built”, her Simone Felice-produced rendition of Sandy (Alex G)’s “Powerful Man”, her collaboration with Jackson Brown on McCarthy Trenching’s “Christmas Song”, and even that time she joined Mumford and Sons for Radiohead’s “All I Need” at Newport Folk Fest. Today, thanks to the Spotify Singles series, we’ve been gifted another new reimagining from Bridgers. She delivered a hushed take on the classic The Cure song from 1992, “Friday I’m in Love”. Generally a brighter number (especially from a band like The Cure), Bridgers takes the track down into more hushed territory, giving it a softer, more patient sort of beauty. Check it out below, along with a new take on “Scott Street” from last year’s Stranger in the Alps. Together with boygenius, Bridgers also recently tackled The Killers’ “Read My Mind” and The Dixie Chicks’ “Cowboy Take Me Away”. Source

Wu-Tang Clan perform career-spanning Tiny Desk Concert: Watch
News posted a topic in DJ Headquarters
This year, Wu-Tang Clan are celebrating the 25th anniversary of their landmark debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). Not only did the rap collective’s surviving members reunite to perform on Jimmy Kimmel! in October, but last month they even had a day dedicated to them in their hometown of Staten Island. To further commemorate (36 Chambers), Wu-Tang’s Raekwon, RZA, Inspectah Deck, Cappadonna, Masta Killa, and U-God recently filmed an extended, career-spanning session for NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series. The 20-minute set kicked off with Wu-Tang Forever cut “Triumph” before eventually morphing into part medley, part epic and impromptu cypher. (Read: The 25 Greatest Hip-Hop Debut Albums of All Time) In addition to (36 Chambers) selections, Wu-Tang spit solo offerings, such as a taste of Raekwon’s classic 1995 album, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. The off-the-cuff moments proved to be some of the best, however, like when RZA swapped out explicit lyrics from “Duck Seazon” to instead drop references to the #MeToo movement. After performing their staple “C.R.E.A.M.”, RZA again slipped in an unexpected freestyle, reading its lyrics off his phone. The group was joined by string musicians from The Green Project and Young Dirty Bastard, son of original member Ol’ Dirty Bastard. Watch the whole Tiny Desk Concert below. Yesterday, Wu-Tang announced reunion shows for 2019. They’re set to perform in Philadelphia on January 25th, followed by a New York City gig the next day. Source -

Christine and the Queens put out one of the Top 10 Albums of the Year with Chris, but that effort’s 11 tracks aren’t the only notable releases the French pop singer has had in 2018. Héloïse Letissier has delivered a number of covers in the last few months, including a gorgeous mashup of Rihanna’s “Kiss It Better” and Kate Bush’s “Wuthering Heights”, and a genius reworking of Maroon 5’s “What Lovers Do”. Now she’s put her unique production touch on Sade’s 1992 classic “No Ordinary Love”. As she managed on her “What Lovers Do” take, Letissier taps into something that works about the original “No Ordinary Love” and completely rewrites it. It maintains more of an R&B feel than, oh, 95% of what Christine and the Queens does, but it’s so unmistakably the product of Letissier that it could easily slot into her own catalog. It’s just a wonder hearing her work, so check out the track via the latest Spotify Singles (which also includes a performance of “The walk” from Chris) below. For comparison’s sake, here’s Sade’s original: Source

And you know, I been trying to work things out with my baby father for a hot minute now,” Cardi B says in the clip. “And we’re really good friends and you know we’re really good business partners and you know, he’s always somebody that I run to, to talk to and we got a lot of love for each other, but things just haven’t been working out between us for a long time.” She continues, noting how the two of them just happened to grow apart: “It’s nobody’s fault… It’s just like, I guess we grew out of love. But we’re not together anymore. I don’t know, it might take time to get a divorce. And I’m going to always have a lot of love for him because he is my daughter’s father and yeah.” Cardi and Offset secretly married in September 2017, and then celebrated the birth of their first and only child, Kulture, this past July. Cheating rumors have plagued the relationship for some time, though Cardi has insisted that Invasion of Privacy single “Be Careful” — which sees her “warning” an unfaithful partner — isn’t about Offset. Watch Cardi’s full Instagram video below. As Complex notes, Offset responded to the post with a quick note of his own: “Y’all won.” Offset’s comment pic.twitter.com/7LZC3mEnej — Complex (@Complex) December 5, 2018 Her love life might not be in the best shape at the moment, but Cardi’s Invasion of Privacy has pulled in plenty of acclaim since its release, and was recently named one of our Top 10 Albums of 2018. As for Offset, he’s planning to drop his debut solo album on December 14th. Source -
Robyn’s latest album, Honey, is loaded with dance songs that beckon your body to move through romantic grief. The clip for the title track to one of the year’s top albums illustrates how beautifully the Swedish pop star does this not just in musical theory, but in physical practice (Read: 10 Ways Pop Star Robyn Was Ahead of Her Time) Directed by Robyn’s longtime partner, Max Vitali (who also helmed the videos for “Call Your Girlfriend”, “Dancing on My Own”, and more hits), the “Honey” clip is at first a series of sensual closeups. You can feel movement as the camera takes slow pans up and over the edges of Robyn and the vague outline of other figures. It isn’t until about halfway through, however, when the shots become slightly wider and the light whiter, that you realize these bodies are dancing. Not quite together, like one might dance in the tight confines of a club, but near and around one another, each in their own expressive world while sharing the same space. Take a look below. Robyn will support Honey on a European and North American tour early next year. Source

The Out Circuit is a solo project from Nathan Burke, onetime bassist for the post-hardcore band Frodus. With a new album, Enter the Ghost, set to arrive this Friday (December 7th), Burke has teamed up with Heavy Consequence to premiere the track “Book of the Void” featuring guest vocals from Demon Hunter singer Ryan Clark (check out the lyric video below). The ambient electronic track is layered with various textures and echoes of new wave titans Depeche Mode. As Burke told us, he actually has a long musical history with Clark. “I first met Ryan in 1998 when Frodus played with Training for Utopia,” Burke revealed. “When I moved to Seattle in 2004, we reconnected and have stayed friends ever since. We’ve actually worked on music together before in a project that never fully came to life called Deathbed Atheist… we wrote about 4 or 5 songs and actually got around to recording the music for one of them.” He continued, “Ryan has always struck me as someone with great musical instincts in a number of genres. We had a shared love of things like Depeche Mode (both of us believing Violator is a stunningly fantastic record), and when I was working on this new album almost immediately I knew I wanted his voice on something. His ability to carry that serious but melodic tone is fantastic and something about the track he ended up singing on jumped out to me as the one that would make the most sense for his voice. Hearing his first pass at it for the first time was one of the more thrilling moments for me in the entire process of making this record and I’m honored to have him be part of it.” Enter the Ghost marks The Out Circuit’s first album in 10 years, with the band’s last disc, Pierce the Empire With a Sound, coming in 2008. Pre-orders for the new album are available at this location. A mini-documentary on The Out Circuit can be seen below. Meanwhile, Demon Hunter recently announced that they will be releasing two new albums, War and Peace, on the same day (March 1st). Source

The Lowdown: Songs for Judy is a thoroughly delightful collection of live acoustic performances recorded during Neil Young’s solo tour in November of 1976. The latest in Young’s archival series features a wide-ranging collection of 22 songs cherry-picked from several different cities across that tour. At this point in his career, Young had already released now-timeless albums like After the Gold Rush and Harvest. He had just turned 31, and Songs for Judy captures him in what most would consider his prime as a live performer. The Good: Most of the tracks on Songs for Judy focus on Young’s voice and guitar, which always seem to touch the soul in this era. “Too Far Gone” instantly draws you in and almost lets you travel back to that moment. The relaxing vibes of the acoustic guitar set the tone for the entire album. The Boulder, Colorado, crowd can’t even hold back, distantly cheering and whistling throughout the entire performance. As soon as the powerful harmonica begins on “Love Is a Rose”, you could tell everyone in Houston was anticipating him performing that song. While the lyrics “Love is a rose, but you better not pick it/ It only grows when it’s on the vine” is probably more recognizable coming from Linda Ronstadt, it was invigorating to hear Young perform his own song. Even the casual Young fan can recognize and appreciate bits and pieces of “White Line”, “Heart of Gold”, and “A Man Needs a Maid” found here. “Campaigner” captures an immaculate performance of the politically acclaimed ballad, which was also featured on last year’s brilliant Hitchhiker release. “Even Richard Nixon has got soul” would end up becoming one of Young’s most memorable lines ever. The Bad: Of the albums many treasures, “No One Seems to Know” is the lone previously unreleased song on the album. Honestly, it could have remained unreleased. It doesn’t necessarily help that it followed “Too Far Gone” in sequence. And while it was fascinating to hear Young revisit an early classic like Buffalo Springfield’s “Mr. Soul” from 1967, the version here just didn’t do it any justice. The Verdict: Neil Young spent the majority of 1976 either on the road with Crazy Horse or on the Stills-Young tour. Obviously, it caused a huge reaction when Young dropped out of that tour midway through that summer. But as disappointing as those cancellations must have been, Hitchhiker and now Songs for Judy show just how zoned in Young was as a performer in late ’76. These albums are as close as we can get to traveling back in time to see one of our greatest at his best. Essential Tracks: “Campaigner”, “Too Far Gone”, and “Love Is a Rose” Source

From 1993 to 1996, Nickelodeon aired a funny, surreal, heartfelt little show by the name of The Adventures of Pete & Pete, a delightfully quirky look at life in suburban New York and the fun-filled adolescences of two brothers named Pete (Danny Tamberelli and Michael C. Maronna). The show (and their lives) were filled with colorful characters, smart writing, and the occasional life lesson peppered in for good measure — think The Wonder Years for the MTV Generation. At that time (or any other), not many kids’ shows were including visual references to Citizen Kane while concocting nonsense phrases like “Kreb Scouts” and “Operation Tapioca”, resulting in that rare kind of television alchemy that lingers on in those who grew up watching it. Guaranteed, if you spent your childhood watching Pete & Pete, the opening strains of house band Polaris‘ catchy theme song, “Hey Sandy”, will soon be popping into your head. We here at Consequence of Sound are no strangers to the Petes. As recently as 2014, we hosted a live episode of Tamberelli and Maronna’s long-running podcast, The Adventures of Danny and Mike, alongside a reunion set from Polaris, which is available as a double-CD here. Oh, and did we mention that we actually spent that crisp fall afternoon playing dodge ball with the Petes themselves? Still, with the 25th anniversary dropping recently, we decided to pop back to Wellsville to see what everyone’s up to — and asked both the Petes to weigh in on some of their castmates’ whereabouts. __________________________________________________________ LITTLE PETE WRIGLEY Danny Tamberelli as Little Pete (Nickelodeon) Name: Danny Tamberelli Last Seen: Danny mostly keeps busy with regular episodes of The Adventures of Danny & Mike, as well as gigs with his band, Jounce; however, he still finds time to guest on shows like The Special Without Brett Davis and do voice work for Grand Theft Auto V. With his teenage bluster and big personality, Little Pete was a brilliant foil for the buds, bullies, and parents that surrounded him in Wellsville. While the Pete & Pete days are long behind him, Tamberelli keeps his love for the show alive with the podcast he runs with Maronna and by keeping regularly in touch with his other castmates. “We all had a great experience,” he says of his time on the show. From the Mouths of Petes: After Pete & Pete wrapped, both Petes separately moved to New York, which meant running into each other in unexpected ways. Tamberelli, in particular, remembers one morning when he was hungover after a concert in Williamsburg, and Maronna caught up to him while he got sick between two cars. “I’m doing great!” Tamberelli managed to say after Maronna asked how he was doing; after that, they managed to stay vaguely in each others’ orbit until they started doing Pete & Pete reunion shows in 2010, leading to the creation of their weekly podcast, The Adventures of Danny & Mike, in 2014. His dynamic with Maronna, especially, is still pretty close to that sibling relationship their characters enjoyed. “I met him in those formative years, and 25 years later we’re still working together, cracking jokes with each other, and making fun of each other.” Danny Tamberelli playing with Jounce __________________________________________________________ BIG PETE WRIGLEY Michael Maronna as Big Pete with Iggy Pop (Nickelodeon) Name: Michael C. Maronna Last Seen: As the other, taller half of The Adventures of Danny & Mike, as well as a steady career as an electrician on films and TV shows like Elementary, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage. His most recent role to date is in the 2004 buddy comedy Men Without Jobs. The very model of adolescent awkwardness, Maronna’s Big Pete was our narrator, the voice of the show. The serious, earnest voice of reason amongst all the quirky chaos of Little Pete and his friends, Big Pete was a wonderfully droll window into the absurd world of Wellsville. At the same time, his shyness around girls, the torment he faced from bullies like Endless Mike and Open Face, and distanced observation of the world around him were painfully relatable to a lot of kids watching the show. From the Mouths of Petes: Maronna also looks back fondly on his time with Pete & Pete, especially his friendship with Tamberelli. In another instance of fate bringing the two back together after the show, Maronna recounted a 1997 story in which he ran across Danny at an audition when he was a bike messenger. His bike had just been stolen, and Danny’s father (who’d driven him to the audition) was kind enough to give Maronna a ride home. “It was almost as if Danny was engineering these meetings to eventually start the podcast,” he says. Four years into the podcast, The Adventures of Danny and Mike regularly tours around the country; the pair just finished a Midwestern tour, including a Chicago show at Beat I am a fagget that was “probably one of our more fun shows,” according to Maronna. He also recently appeared at the UCB in Hell’s I am a fagget for their Adult Spelling Bee: “I didn’t lose, but came in third or fourth place, I think,” he says. The most challenging words he faced? “Loquacious, or interminable, maybe.” He and Danny also continue to do plenty of reunions over the years, including shows at the Bowery and various comic book conventions. Michael Maronna with Danny Tamberelli __________________________________________________________ ARTIE, THE STRONGEST MAN IN THE WORLD Toby Huss as Artie with Little Pete (Nickelodeon) Name: Toby Huss Last Seen: Ray in the most recent Halloween remake, as well as the films Destroyer, The Front Runner, and the TV series Sacred Lies. (He’s a busy boy.) “Pipe!” As The Strongest Man in the World, Artie was one of the few non-parental adults allowed into the kids’ orbit, and he was a rubber-faced delight in every episode. While he was only in the first two seasons of the show, Little Pete’s personal superhero was the kind of cool grownup every kid wanted as their imaginary friend. Of course, now Toby Huss is a bona fide character actor, working in everything from comedy (The Spoils of Babylon, Reno 911!) to dramas like CoS favorite Halt and Catch Fire and the million projects he has coming up this year. From the Mouths of Petes: He also keeps in regular touch with both of his “little vikings.” Maronna just worked with him on the upcoming series Dickinson while Tamberelli recently had him and his wife over for dinner at their apartment. Says Tamberelli of Huss’ talent, “He’s Philip Seymour Hoffman without the drugs — he’s so great at what he does, an incredible actor with none of the hangups.” Toby Huss in Halloween (2018) __________________________________________________________ ELLEN HICKLE Alison Fanelli as Ellen Hickle (Nickelodeon) Name: Alison Fanelli Last Seen: Pete & Pete is effectively her only acting credit, barring a small voice role in the TV series TOME: Terrain of Magical Expertise. Big Pete’s best friend (and someone he describes as “a girl and a friend, but not a girlfriend,” Ellen was the type-A, obsessive member of the Petes’ inner circle, who provided some wonderful moments for Big Pete to grow emotionally. (Or just obsess over her.) From the Mouths of Petes: While Fanelli is out of the acting game, she’s now a skilled pediatric surgeon, something Maronna notes with great pride. Alison Fanelli and fan (Courtesy of Jeff Raspe) __________________________________________________________ NONA F. MECKLENBERG Michelle Trachtenberg (Courtesy of Julie Halpern) Name: Michelle Trachtenberg Last Seen: Voicing the lead on the animated series Human Kind Of, as well as the lead in the short-lived TV series Guidance and the Hallmark Christmas movie The Christmas Gift. Little Pete’s best friend, the talkative, assertive Nona always had a cast on her arm and a twinkle in her eye. She was one of the more bubbly, effervescent members of the cast, always trying on new characters and new alternatives for her middle name (Frank, Forklift, Fahrvergnügen). From the Mouths of Petes: Trachtenberg was one of the other actors who leapt to stardom after the show, with the Nickelodeon film Harriet the Spy and a regular role on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Nowadays, she’s still busy with TV series and television films. Maronna and Tamberelli don’t keep in touch with her much anymore, but they’re proud of her success. “She’s a phenomenal actress,” says Maronna. Michelle Trachtenberg in The Christmas Gift __________________________________________________________ “ENDLESS” MIKE HELLSTROM Rick Gomez as Endless Mike (Nickelodeon) Name: Rick Gomez Last Seen: In a regular role on the short-lived NBC series The Crossing this year, as well as a long-running,recurring turn on the FX series Justified. One of the most indelible bullies on the show, “Endless” Mike was Big Pete’s arch-nemesis, a tyrant of almost inexplicable malice toward Big Pete and his friends. He was the classic “peaked too early” kid, who had a car and ruled over shop class with an iron fist, the kind of kid we all hoped we could avoid in the halls. Without bad guys like Endless Mike, the Petes wouldn’t have had nearly as … well, entertaining a childhood. From the Mouths of Petes: Gomez has himself gone on to a respectable career in films and television, and the Petes delight in seeing him in the odd thing here and there. Maronna drolly noted of Gomez, “I just saw him in something terrible – that Transformers movie, dressing down Shia LaBeouf. But good for him, though.” Rick Gomez __________________________________________________________ POLARIS Names: Mark Mulcahy (Muggy Polaris), Dave McCaffrey (Jersey Polaris), Scott Boutier (Harris Polaris), and Henning Ohlenbusch (Penny Polaris) Last Seen: Twenty years after the show, the band reunited, toured, and released a cassingle of two new songs. The band’s members are still playing gigs and recording today. Mulcahy released a celebrated solo album just last year, The Possum in the Driveway, and dropped in as a guest on the last J Mascis record. Ohlenbusch plays in multiple groups in Northampton, Massachusetts, recording much of his own music with his band Gentle Hen, including this year’s Be Nice to Everyone. Comprising three quarters of indie outfit Miracle Legion, Polaris is just as much a part of the show’s fabric as its rich ensemble of characters. That classic ’90s alt-rock theme song remains a fundamental moment for Pete fans, and their incidental music — found on Music from The Adventures of Pete & Pete — kept the show firmly grounded in its offbeat, coming-of-age atmosphere. From the Mouths of Petes: Tamberelli and Maronna still see the band every once in a while; Tamberelli sings the praises of Possum in the Driveway – “It hasn’t left my car since I got it” – and Maronna loves when the band comes out on tour with them every once in a while, whether it’s at Lincoln Hall or Toad’s Place in New Haven, Connecticut. Once, he even came up on stage to perform with them. “I played terribly, of course,” he says. “Everyone else was good, though.” Oh, Big Pete. Source

From the outside looking in, it’s extremely easy to view politicians as a punch of silver-spoon fed private school wankers who are solely interested in furthering their careers at seemingly the expense of everyone else. Well, that’s essentially been confirmed by 15-year-old Sweedish activist Greta Thunberg, who while speaking at the United Nation’s conference on climate change took the opportunity to call our world leader’s for “behaving like children.” Good fuckin’ on ya. “For 25 years, countless people have come to the UN climate conferences begging our world leaders to stop emissions and clearly that has not worked as emissions are continuing to rise,” she said, according to The Guardian. “So I will not beg the world leaders to care for our future. I will instead let them know change is coming, whether they like it or not,” she said. Thunberg rose to attention when she took 2 weeks off school to protest out the front of the Swedish parliament for the country to reduce its emissions by 15%. “Since our leaders are behaving like children, we will have to take the responsibility they should have taken long ago,” Thunberg said at the conference. “We have to understand what the older generation has dealt to us, what mess they have created that we have to clean up and live with. We have to make our voices heard.” “Why should we be studying for a future that soon may be no more? This is more important than school, I think,” she told the conference. Nearly 200 nations have gathered in Poland to try and hammer out some productive climate change initiatives, let’s hope Greta gave them the kick up the arse they need. Source

Friendly Fires have been blurring the lines between indie rock and dance since they kicked off, and with some of their latest releases they’ve been pushing it even further. With the current market of nu-disco and indie-dance popping off, Friendly Fires have recently been moving towards that disco-infused almost housey vibe, their latest track Heaven Let Me In a pretty fine example of that. But we’re not here for their new track (despite the fact it is a banger), it’s Wednesday and that means it’s Stoney’s Throwback track, so we’re throwing back to what was probably their most popular tune. An indie dance number by the name of Jump In The Pool. The tune, now over 10 years old, was an iconic intro to indie dance for many. Check out the tune below and revel in the nostalgia! Source

In news that would be even more fitting if the short-lived “popular Oscar” were still a thing, Kevin Hart will be this year’s Oscars host, The Hollywood Reporter confirms. The Night School and Central Intelligence star acknowledged the honor on Instagram on Tuesday, saying that “now it’s time to rise to the occasion.” Though this is his first time hosting the event, he said that producers have been hounding him about it “for years.” He’ll take over for Jimmy Kimmel, who presided over the past two ceremonies. As we previously reported, a few changes will be implemented this year in an effort to save the event’s fledgling ratings. The biggest shift is in ensuring the telecast won’t run past three hours, meaning certain awards will be presented during commercials. The Oscars will air live on Sunday, February 24th on ABC. Hopefully they read all the right names this time. Source

Back in 2003, Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard teamed up with Jimmy Tamborello of Dntel for a full-length LP as The Postal Service. The one-off release became a feverishly beloved cult classic, and then eventually went on to go platinum, a feat celebrated with a reunion tour and deluxe edition of Give Up in 2013. Unfortunately, Gibbard made it clear on Twitter at the time that The Postal Service was to be permanently disbanded after their final show of the tour. Today, however, brings perhaps the closest thing we could get to another reunion: a Tamborello-helmed remix of “Summer Years”, the shimmering, honestly a bit more autumnal single from the band’s ninth studio album Thank You For Today. Although their professional relationship dates back more than 15 years – beginning when Gibbard offered his vocals to the song “(This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan” off the Dntel 2001 album Life Is Full of Possibilities – this is Tamborello’s first time working on a Death Cab song. The result is a warm, pulsing reinterpretation of the originally restless track. Listen to the remix below. Marion “Suge” Knight was recently sentenced to 28 years in prison after pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter. The one-time Death Row Records mogul’s been on an endless downward spiral ever since the 1996 murder of Tupac Shakur, and now that journey will be chronicled in a new documentary. The Antoine Fuqua-directed film will premiere on Showtime on December 21st, and it comes with the (unfortunate) title of American Dream/American Knightmare. The heavily researched documentary, which Fuqua calls “a cautionary tale of one man’s choices and the consequences of his decisions,” is built around in-depth interviews with Knight that Fuqua says “[give] a first-person account and new details about the Las Vegas shooting that took the life of Tupac Shakur.” Sure, Suge’s an unreliable narrator, but who else can provide his level of insight into the era of gangsta rap. Fuqua adds in a press release, “In this documentary – which took years of research, production and labor to complete – Suge Knight discusses for the first time his complex life in detail,” said Fuqua. “The audience will learn how he built and lost Death Row Records, and his views about the rap music scene.” Watch a trailer for the documentary below. Will he claim that Dr Dre is still trying to have him killed? Almost definitely. Source

Yesterday, the internet had a meltdown when it learned Friends might be leaving Netflix on January 1st. Today, those fears were assuaged when Netflix revealed that the series would stay on the platform through 2019. It turns out, however, that the situation is more complex than it seems, with the question of who gets to stream Friends giving way to a larger conversation about the upcoming streaming wars. Friends, after all, belongs to AT&T now. And, along with Disney+, probably the most anticipated new streaming platform is WarnerMedia’s in-development three-tiered model. According to a new piece in The New York Times, the question of which platforms survive will rest on a) original content and b) who has access to beloved series like Friends, which was reportedly licensed by Netflix for $100 million. And that’s $100 million just to stream it in 2019. Prior to that, Netflix was paying $30 million a year to stream the show, but, as the piece states, “the new amount reflects the thirst for content in the streaming age.” Even before the internet exploded, Netflix knew that keeping Friends around was important, as negotiations began a few months ago. But that’s going to become tougher as more streaming platforms launch. AT&T executive John Stankey intoned at a conference last month that companies like Netflix “should expect their libraries are going to get a lot thinner.” And the impact of Disney+ is already being felt, with Netflix’s Marvel quickly drying up with the cancellations of Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Daredevil. At a recent investor conference, AT&T’s chief executive, Randall Stephenson, warned that the market can only support two or three on-demand streaming services, including Netflix. He added, “[We] want to be one of the two or three.” What this all boils down to is this: Enjoy Friends while you still have it, and prepare yourself for more subscriptions. Source

Electric Gardens has been pushing hard to bring Australia some of the best elements of Euro style festivals, first with their announcement of an Amnesia stage, bringing the best of Ibiza and now with the announcement of one of the largest names in trance of all time. They’ve just announced their Quantum Trance Arena alongside the already hugely diverse electronic lineup and it’s headed by none other than all time legend, Paul Van Dyk. Supporting him will be the likes of Aussie heavyweight MaRlo, as well as ‘The Degenerate’ himself Sean Tyas. Rounding off the huge stage is the relative newcomer, GRUM, who’s been making moves as Anjunabeats latest big recruit. The additions look to make this year’s Electric Gardens the biggest yet, featuring a ridiculous amount of internationals and genre diversity. We’ve been on Willaris. K bandwagon for a while now and with good reason. His tunes are dark and progressive, his production is crisp and his live show emits tonnes of real energy. His latest two tunes might sound a little familiar to fans of Willaris. K and that would be because Natural Selection has been played before. Willaris has been playing an unpolished version for up to a year, including in a Triple J mix up amongst other high profile sets. We’ve been eagerly awaiting new music post his Alchemy EP and the two new tunes, Natural Selection and Cobaki Sky (Prequel) have given us a taste of what we’re hoping is a big ol’ album drop. As per the usual Willaris. K style, the Natural selection is a driving number, somewhere between techno, electro and house, with a constant build throughout that leaves you wanting more. Cobaki Sky (Prequel) by name and style seems to allude to the fact we’re getting more from the alchemist, as it appears to be an intro track, to tease into something huge. We could talk for days about the guy, but instead we’re going to pop the stream below and let you listen to it yourself! Check it out and tell us what you think, who’s keen for a Willaris. K album?
