  1. Philip Anselmo represented his old band Pantera in a big way at a recent show in Lubbock, Texas, playing a number of songs by the iconic metal act with his current backing band The Illegals. While Anselmo has been known to perform a Pantera cut or two at his shows, fans at Jake’s Sports Cafe on November 2nd were treated to an extra special gig, devoting the entire second half of the show to Pantera songs. Among the classic Pantera tracks Anselmo and company performed were “Becoming”, “I’m Broken”, “A New Level”, “Mouth for War” and “Walk”. While Anselmo was born in New Orleans, Pantera bassist Rex Brown and late brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul all grew up in Texas, making it the band’s home state. So, it’s easy to see why Anselmo gave the Texas crowd an evening to remember. It’s been a tough year for Pantera fans, as drummer Vinnie Paul tragically died back in June of an enlarged heart and severe coronary artery disease. His guitarist brother Dimebag was horrifically gunned down while performing with the band Damageplan in December 2004. Pantera played their last-ever show in August 2001 in Yokohama, Japan, before breaking up. 2. Portland duo rev up for next big hit Portland-based hip-hop electronic crossover duo Raquel Divar and Cory O are excited to announce the release of their new music video, “Runners Anthem”. Shot and directed by Tim Slew of Soundlapse with choreography by the talented Lindsey Lyons, the music video was self-produced by the multi-talented Cory O. The music video focuses on powerful female protagonist Raquel Divar as she introspectively raps about her everyday struggles. Numerous scenes feature Raquel zooming through the streets of Portland in a bright green sports car while the video equally features choreographed dance scenes set in a colorful graffiti filled warehouse. This high-energy trap music video is a compliment to their single for “Runners Anthem” featured on their recent 2018 collaborative EP release The Reign. Cory O delivers the duo’s bass-heavy, synth-driven beats while Raquel spits with force and precision, which can be described as simultaneously poetic and gangster. Both Cory and Raquel have solid solo careers but when they come together their energy and talent are difficult to match. Watch “Runners Anthem” above. 3. Jim Carson continues his steady stream of releases with his latest funky, catchy, tribal, techy-afro house single House music producer Jim Carson brings us his funky, catchy, tribal, techy-afro house track “Alien Intelligence.” Carson layers the single with trippy ambient textures, a hard-hitting bassline, and echoing reverb, providing the track with a sci-fi feel. The track has an underground feel, nostalgic of the early days of house music with an exciting, climactic build up followed by an epic breakdown. Carson had this to say about his latest release: “Right before I sat down to produce “Alien Intelligence” I was listening to “Hangin’ Out With Charlie” by Camelphat. The two songs sound nothing alike but that is where I got the inspiration to write “Alien Intelligence.” Camelphat samples Rick James and I always thought Rick James to be out of this world. That is why I used the vocal sample “Behind this strange signal there is an alien intelligence that knows all.” Manufactured Hysteria is Jim Carson’s latest side project. He typically releases music under the moniker Ganesha Cartel. “Alien Intelligence” (Manufactured Hysteria remix) is out now on all digital platforms via Jim Carson’s own emblem Anahata Love Recordings. 4. Rising Harlem Recording Artist Makes a Way Out of No Way on New Single Harlem recording artist S’natra’s latest “Too Busy” is an exemplary and palatable sonic depiction of his ever-soaring trajectory. The Coachella performer and Live Nation’s Ones to Watch artist displays bravado as he details his success and weeds out imposters over an ominous beat filled with heavy bass and a melodious hook difficult to forget. Sure to change the current tepid tide of New York Hip Hop, his anomalous style and lyrics of an engrossing upbringing are sure to enthrall aficionados longing for the days when the East Coast reigned supreme. Co-signed by major outlets like Hypebeast and Okayplayer, the CAA signee is on the cusp of cementing his own name alongside Hip Hop’s pantheon. Stream “Too Busy” above, courtesy of Soundcloud. 5. Back in March, Sade contributed her first new song in seven years, “Flower of the Universe”, to the film A Wrinkle in Time. Another new song from the R&B legend appears in Steve McQueen’s latest feature, Widows. Entitled “The Big Unknown”, Sade wrote the song specifically for Widows’ final scene. “Over a series of conversations with Sade, Steve McQueen encouraged her to dig deep within to write a song about loss and survival. The song ‘The Big Unknown’ speaks to the film’s spirit, but upholds the classic hallmarks of her sound, and stands out as another bold and brilliant work from the legendary songstress,” a press release explains. Take a listen to “The Big Unknown” below. Along with songs from Sade and Nina Simone, the soundtrack to Widows features an original score from Hans Zimmer. The soundtrack is on sale digitally on November 9th, in stores on CD on November 30th, and pressed to vinyl on December 28th. Directed by McQueen and based on the book by Gillian Flynn, Widows is “a blistering, modern-day thriller set against the backdrop of crime, passion and corruption.” Starring Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki, and Cynthia Erivo, along with Liam Neeson, Colin Farrell, Robert Duvall, Daniel Kaluuya, Lukas Haas, and Brian Tyree Henry, the film tells the “story of four women with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands’ criminal activities. Set in contemporary Chicago, amid a time of turmoil, tensions build when the women take their fate into their own hands and conspire to forge a future on their own terms.” Widows hits theaters on November 16th. 8. Wildfires are sweeping across California this week, displacing tens of thousands of residents and destroying homes and communities. One of the biggest and most dangerous fires is in the Thousand Oaks area, the same city where 12 young adults were gunned down at a bar earlier this week. Among those fleeing for safety is Machinedrum, an EDM producer, who most recently put out a remix for The Glitch Mob’s “Enter Formless.” He shared the news on Twitter: “We just had to evacuate our home in Thousand Oaks due to fires. […] Just read that houses are on fire on our street, 1 block long. We might not have a home to come back to.” Just read that houses are on fire on our street, 1 block long. 9. Following up on a HOT new collaboration, Snails just recently released “Magnets” with the legendary bass duo Zeds Dead. Having just kicked off his “The Shell 2.0 Tour” with Excision’s production team, Beama Visuals, Snails has been spending his rare spare time collaborating with another basslords, Boogie T and Wooli. Snails‘ collaboration with Boogie T on fresh new banger “Redline” is out now on Slugz Music. Snails & Boogie T “Redline” Listen to Snails and Boogie-T’s ‘Redline’: When two artists like these come together to create something new, it’s obvious the track will turn out just as bass-oriented as ever. However, it also includes some special musical elements that distinguish “Redline” as the true gem of an EARGASM that it is. 10. Research into MDMA as a treatment for PTSD has been underway, approved by the FDA, for the past couple years. But for the first time, a psychedelic drugs – psilocybin – has received approval and a “breakthrough therapy designation” to begin trials. Psilocybin is the active psychoactive ingredient in the drug commonly referred to as “magic mushrooms” or just “shrooms” for short. “It really does represent a significant development in the whole history of psychedelic research,” says University of California, Los Angeles psychiatry and behavioral sciences professor Charles Grob, who conducted foundational psilocybin trials at UCLA in the mid-2000s. To those in the psychedelic community, the beneficial effects of psilocybin have been known for a long time. However, the recognition by the wider medical community of its healing properties is a massive first step. Rick Doblin, founder of the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) and a psychedelic research pioneer, predicts that MDMA and psilocybin could now both be legal by 2021. Rather than be available via prescription, where they could be abused without supervision from a trained professional, the drugs will be used in what’s called “psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy.” A new study into the effects of MDMA on PTSD showed a 76% success rate among participants. Researchers into the effects of psilocybin are confident that similar results can be achieved with depression. So far, two companies have received approval to research psilocybin as a treatment for depression: Compass Therapeutics, a U.K.-based company that researches and develops mental health treatments; and Usona Institute. Usona hopes to gain psilocybin approval for anyone with depression, not just those who are treatment-resistant. via Rolling Stone This article was first published on Your EDM. 11. Rain Man is back, folks, and he has a new vitality that he’s bringing to the table. After deleting his artist Facebook and taking a break from both Instagram and Twitter for a few months, he released a song last month with Nextgen Records and another today on Dim Mak. The new song is called “Take It Closer,” featuring Vikki Gilmore, and is a fair bit more poppy than his fans are used to. In fact, there’s a lot of similarity in this style to 2010-2012 era progressive house hits, primarily by the Swedes. The piano and pounding rhythm are surely nostalgic and Gilmore’s vocals are soft and easy listening atop the addictive production. With the new release, we felt it was time to ask Rain Man a few questions about the track, his return, and his absence. Check out “Take It Closer” with Vikki Gilmore below and scroll down to read more! “Take It Closer” is clearly more pop than anything you’ve put out before. Tell us about the process behind this track and what it means to you. I actually started this track when I was visiting my family in Chicago over the summer. I was away from my main workspace and only had my laptop, some headphones and an old guitar I had left at home. I started working on it late one evening when the the fireflies were out and the cicadas were buzzing…I wanted to release the vibe that was going through my head. I was finally back at home in the middle of a lazy summer, where so many of my memories originated and hold a special place in my heart. Some fans might remember your last track as “Do You Still Feel?” with MAX, but you actually just slyly put out a new tune with NextGen last month. Is this the beginning of a return? It’s absolutely the beginning of a return! I have so much new music and new projects that I’m working on, I definitely think it’s the start of a new era for Rain Man. In the past, I’ve been a little bit too precious with my music and many songs I produce go into the trash and never see the light of day. I think that my knack for trying to make a ‘perfect’ song has gone way too far in the past and I’m ready to move beyond that and share more of the music I’m creating. During your time away from releasing music, you also deleted your Facebook and took some time off from Twitter and Instagram. What was the reasoning behind that? Last year I decided I needed to take a step back from social media and focus on myself and my relationship with the real world. I realized that I wasn’t spending enough time enjoying my surroundings or the people closest to me. I needed some time to work on Kris the human and not Rain Man the DJ. I think it was a necessary period of growth; and looking back from the other side, that break has made me a better friend, brother, son, and even a better music producer. 12. Have you ever been to Electric Ladyland? Not like this. Today marks the release of the 50th anniversary box set for The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s timeless 1968 double album. Subscribers of Apple Music and Spotify can stream a sampler version below. You can purchase a physical copy of the set here. Remastered from the original analog tapes and featuring a new 5.1 surround sound mix, the deluxe edition spans three unique releases, specifically the original album, a collection of previously unreleased demos and alternate versions dubbed Electric Ladyland: The Early Takes, and an unreleased live album titled Jimi Hendrix Experience: Live At the Hollywood Bowl 9/14/68, which includes a cover of Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love”. Fans who pick up the physical box set also get At Last… The Beginning: The Making of Electric Ladyland, a definitive documentary that features on-screen recollections from the likes of drummer Mitch Mitchell, manager Chas Chandler, Buddy Miles, Steve Winwood, and many others. Also included is a book of unpublished photos, handwritten lyrics, and essays by music critic David Fricke and producer John McDermott. Another intriguing facet to this release is the new cover art, which stays true to Hendrix’s vision. Originally, he wanted to use a photograph by the late Linda McCartney, who snapped the band with a bunch of children surrounding a statue of Alice in Wonderland in New York’s Central Park. While the photo made its way inside the album as a black and white shot, this set places it on the front with full color. Electric Ladyland marked the final studio album to be released during Hendrix’s lifetime, seeing him become a complete auteur, who meticulously oversaw every step of the production. As Fricke writes in his essay for the box set, “Electric Ladyland is the guitarist at a visceral, pictorial peak in his playing and his exploration of the recording studio as an instrument of composition and narrative.” Electric Ladyland 50th Anniversary Cover Artwork: Electric Ladyland Deluxe Edition Tracklist: Side A: 01. … And the Gods Made Love 02. 13. Last week, Thom Yorke put together a special mix of atmospheric records for BBC Radio 6. Now, the Radiohead frontman has curated a new playlist for BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction, but this collection is an entirely different beast, one devoted to experimental music of all varieties. As Pitchfork points out, the 20-song mixtape spans a generous 90 minutes. It opens with “Burn the Witch”, from Radiohead’s 2016 album, A Moon Shaped Pool, before delving into works by Aphex Twin, experimental krautrockers Faust, and former King Crimson percussionist Jamie Muir. There are also cuts from French harpsichordist Justin Taylor, composer and musique concrète pioneer Pierre Henry, experimental banjoist Nathan Bowles, and the Peter Broderick-led The Beacon Sound Choir. Yorke’s own composition “Suspirium”, from his first-ever score for Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria remake, also makes an appearance. Take a listen to the full mixtape here. Yorke was recently the focus of BBC Radio 1’s latest Piano Sessions installment, which featured an intimate performance of Radiohead’s “Everything In Its Right Place”. He also performed a handful of Suspiria tracks for BBC Radio 6. Yorke’s prolific activity as of late likely will continue into 2019, when he’s expected to release a new solo album. Source

  17. Going on tour as an artist, especially one as big as Alesso, means getting close to the crew who are with you for often weeks at a time. So when one of those people gets hurt, it’s really like a family member being injured. This past Tuesday, Alesso’s photographer Corentin was involved in a near-fatal hit and run in Los Angeles that has left him in the ICU. “He had brain bleeding, 10 broken ribs on his left side (a lot bruising in lungs), a ruptured spleen, broken left shoulder blade, and broken left leg,” Alesso wrote on Instagram. “He will be in the ICU for at least 7 days. We won’t know how he is going to be.” He still remains in the ICU as of yesterday. Alesso and his team have set up a GoFundMe for Corentin’s hospital bills. On Jimmy Kimmel Live last night, Goldblum and his band were joined by former American Idol standout Haley Reinhart for their first-ever late-night performance. Whether that is while you’re dancing at a disco forgetting where you are or just staring at the moon on a clear night, it can be anything. A swim in the ocean, a glance at a stranger–it’s a personal individual thing. Call it what you want but we have all felt it. 20. This one is too good to be true — but it apparently is! A Los Angeles hard rock band named Threatin has reportedly created a false fanbase and used those numbers to book a European tour. And, as could have been expected, no fans have shown up. MetalSucks has dug deep into the story, uncovering one doozy of a tidbit after another. It apparently all started to unravel when the band’s “agent” convinced the Underworld venue in Camden, England that Threatin had pre-sold 291 tickets to their gig on November 1st. It turned out three people showed up. Then, a few nights later, only a few people were in attendance at The Exchange club in Bristol, England, after that venue was told 180 tickets were pre-sold. And those few people were on the opening band’s list! It’s happened to other venues, too, and as of now, the band’s “Breaking the World Tour” is scheduled to run through a November 16th show in Weinheim, Germany. A member of the band The Unresolved, who opened for Threatin last night in Birmingham, checked in with MetalSucks, and he told site, “So my band The Unresolved played last night at Asylum 2 in Birmingham. The day before (7th Nov) we got a message from Ghost Of Machines explaining there was nobody at their Bristol show with Threatin. They thought he’d been ripped of by band booking. We spoke with Asylum who told us they’s been told it was sell out but they checked ticket sales and were at zero. Asylum made it free entry.” He added, “From what we can tell, Threatin is the guy not the band. His name is Jered Threatin and he says he’s a solo artist with a hired band. They were sound checking when we got there. Throughout the whole night Threatin didn’t approach anybody or talk to anyone but his own people … There were 13 people in the room when we played. The sound engineer, bartender, 10 people we brought and 1 who actually got a ticket.” It appears that frontman Jered Threatin, or someone who is bankrolling him, has bought Facebook fans to bring the band’s following up to 38,000 people. On top of that, the band’s YouTube channel features clips that look like they were edited with large crowd sizes that probably didn’t exist. There’s so much more to this story, so we encourage you to visit MetalSucks, which did a fine job of reporting. In the meantime, enjoy the hard-rock stylings of Threatin below in the music video for “Living Is Dying”, which features Jered Threatin on every instrument and has somehow managed to rack up 800,000 views on YouTube. 21. It’s difficult to believe Avicii is no longer with us, but it’s easy to hear his music will live on forever. Gareth Emery and Emma Hewitt recently performed a heart-wrenching tribute to the late producer — a stunning, stripped down version of “Without You.” As they played out the song live at Laserface Las Vegas, the crowd fell silent. With only piano and vocals backing the emotional song, there was a lot of space for reflection. As you can see in the video below, the artists and the crowd literally lit up the room with Avicii’s legacy. The result was incredible. To have been in this moment would have been truly special, but thankfully we can all experience this magic from home with an official upload. Get the tissues read, because this version of “Without You” is beyond bittersweet. Remember: Avicii’s memory board is still live on his official website. 22. Track by Track is a recurring new music feature in which we ask a band or musician to discuss the stories behind each track on their latest release. Most bands never get to celebrate their 25th birthday, and even fewer get to do so while their members are all still under 40. Hanson is one of those lucky few. Brothers Isaac, Taylor, and Zac marked their silver anniversary in 2017 with a well-earned rite of passage: a greatest-hits collections. While Middle of Everywhere: The Greatest Hits gave fans the chance to reevaluate Hanson’s quarter-century of musical output, it represented only part of the band’s anniversary celebration. The second part arrives today in the form of String Theory, a double album of symphonic arrangements that adds a new, classical-minded twist to Hanson’s catalog. When I catch up with Taylor Hanson over the phone, he admits that working with a symphony was one of the top entries on the band’s post-anniversary bucket list. He’s also aware of the indulgence factor. “It’s logical, right, that in 2018, when people aren’t buying records, we should make a double symphonic record?” he asks with a laugh. (Read/Listen: Taylor Hanson on Adding Strings to “MMMBop” and Touring with a 50-Piece Orchestra) Fortunately for fans, String Theory never stoops to the level of a simple cash grab that such reimaginings records often plumb. You’ll find the hits here, sure (including joyful takes on early smashes like “Mmmbop” and “Where is the Love”), but they’re outnumbered by tracks sourced from the band’s vast collection of EPs, many of which were recorded specifically for their loyal fanclub. Taken together, these songs stitch together 25 years’ worth of music into a retroactive concept record, one which tells the epic, almost operatic tale of a boy’s journey through the music world that often mirror’s the band’s own biography. Along the way, the band finds a freshness in these 23 tracks, often thanks to the deft arrangements of veteran composer David Campbell. Listeners find themselves looking backwards and forwards at the same time, simultaneously appreciative of the band’s longevity and excited for whatever comes net. For the latest Track by Track, Hanson talked us through the epic journey contained within String Theory. “Reaching for the Sky (Part 1)”: The show is really built around a lyric, and telling a lyrical story. […] This particular character’s perspective at the beginning is one that we resonated with as we began our career years ago. […] You’re always surrounded by doubters, and this character is saying, “No, I really believe. I feel called to something. You don’t have to understand it, but I feel called to reach. It’s who I am.” It’s beginning the story to say that this character is setting out on this impossible quest, and immediately he’s articulating both the clarity of his vision and the clarity of conflict and doubt that’s surrounding him. […] It’s the preamble that gets you into this story. “Joyful Noise”: With “Joyful Noise,” you now get some energy, you get some pace. Now he’s walking, now he’s going. The orchestra steps in, and the drums step in, Zac takes the lead vocal, and it’s almost like the first footprint of the show. […] [The boy] is saying, “Make a joyful noise.” His vision is to put that into the world. That’s his actual message versus his aspiration: “I want to put this energy into the world.” So, the journey begins on that song. “Where Is The Love”: Our collaboration with David [Campbell] really did point out that we could deconstruct things, and by having a symphony, it allowed us to do things with a song that you would never do. One of my favorite parts of “Where Is The Love” is the verse melody; it has a slightly bluesier tone to it that, on the original recording, is very wall-to-wall. […] You don’t necessarily hear the vocal melody as clearly. What I think of [this version of] that song doing musically is beginning to really cement the harmony. The first almost minute of the song is now three voices harmonizing, leading towards the chorus, and then the symphony bringing in further girth and wrapping around it. “Dream It Do It”: “Where Is The Love” gets really high, and we knew, as we were putting together the puzzle pieces, that once you get the high — the listener is more likely to know this song, it’s extremely rhythmic, it’s got this big chorus — it’s like, where do you go from there? Is it going to be too much too early? […] What do you say after that? […] The “Dream It Do It” idea was first written thinking about another project, which was not one we were even going to perform in. It’s obviously completely, just — “Dream it, do it?” Come on. It’s like, who says that? But the verses of that song are so right on point in talking about what it means to dream and actually do it, talking about the work and the heavy lifting and the resolve, and musically, it was built around this extremely triumphant, almost Chariots of Fire melody. Once we were surveying the potential ideas […] that melody was like an “a-ha!” […] The transition could be seamless. “Mmmbop”: [Our relationship with “Mmmbop”] is a healthy relationship. [laughs] We’re still together. “Mmmbop” clearly is the song people know Hanson for the most, and it was such a hit at a level that few people get to have in their career, so the decision to include it or not was one of the questions. Honestly, it didn’t become crystal clear to me that it absolutely needed to be in the show until we put “Dream It Do It” and “Where Is The Love” in that moment. We were allowing ourselves, at that point, to use “Mmmbop” for its story and for the core of its identity, not necessarily for how everyone knows it. […] To us, it was a campfire song. […] There’s actually a sort of warmth and almost subtle melancholy to that song, which is part of why I think it’s lasted with our fans. “Chasing Down My Dreams”: “Chasing Down My Dream”, musically, is like the road trip. We’re still driving. There’s pace to it. It’s almost kind of Americana, straight ahead. Zac goes to the guitar, I’m playing drums, Isaac’s on the piano. It begins to articulate further what this journey’s looking like. “Tragic Symphony”: “Tragic Symphony” is the only song that has a sort of romantic flair to it. […] What it’s saying is that, ok, you’re going for your dream, you’re putting yourself out there — now, what goes with that is the toxicity and the dark side of getting what you want. You’re addicted to it, you’re enamored with it, and you can’t get out of it. You can’t turn your back on this path you’ve chosen. […] Musically, what backs it up is, you know, it’s a little bit more of a bluesy riff, there’s more intensity to it. […] You’re hearing Latin percussion begin to show up, you’re hearing more rhythm. It’s starts to get a little more muscle. There’s a little more shadow surrounding the music. “Got A Hold On Me”: The transition from “Tragic” into “Got A Hold On Me” is probably my favorite purely arrangement moment, because the brakes just get slammed on. “Tragic Symphony” is very syncopated, and it’s just driving, and at the end of the tune […] the beats per minute are almost cut in half, and everybody hits these beats, just “dap-dap! dap-dap!” and it drops down into this section called “Thieves and Liars”. It’s almost like a bad James Bond theme. “Yearbook”: We needed to stay down and dark longer during this part of the show, and reemphasize the downward shift in the show and in the story. “Yearbook” has that feel to it. Of all the songs, it’s probably the most out of touch with our current perspective. It’s very much a youthful look at loss of innocence. […] It had almost a different level of power, because it had a history. […] Lyric-wise, and musically, it gave us something that was hard to achieve. It was hard to find the right song. We would’ve written, from the very beginning, a new song if we didn’t feel like that one achieved the goal at that point. “Siren Call”: [“Siren Call”] was written with the sound of strings at its heart. […] The Mellotron [used on the original] is awesome, but one of the cool things about it musically is that [this version] is symphony and vocals. Drums are in there as well, I guess, but we’re not playing any other instruments outside of that. We sort of gave the music to the symphony. Source
  23. Last night marked the launch marked of Travis Scott’s “Wish You Were Here Tour”. The Houston rapper brought his latest album, ASTROWORLD, to life by turning Baltimore’s Royal Farms Arena into a hip-hop amusement park. The incredible 32-song set featured all the hits you’d expect, like “Stop Trying to Be God”, “Butterfly Effect”, “Antidote”, and obvious closer “Sicko Mode”. Scott also delivered his verses from a number of collaborations including SZA’s “Love Galore”, Kodak Black’s “ZEZE”, and Trippie Redd’s “Dark Knight Dummo”, which featured an appearance from Trippie himself. Gunna also came out for the ASTROWORLD cut “Yosemite”. It wasn’t just what is being performed that makes this tour so noteworthy, however, but also where and how. Parts of the show saw Scott riding stadium versions of amusement park rides, like the rollercoaster that snaked over the crowd during “5% Tint”, or the circular contraption he was strapped to for “Carousel”. And all of that on top of a massive light and laser show. This was only night one of an tour, so just imagine what Scott has in store for his ASTRWORLD Festival later this month.
