The Music Modernization Act (MMA), S.2334 officially passed in a unanimous vote by the US Senate on Tuesday (Sept. 18). The overall goal of the act has been made clear — to alter outdated music copyright laws and bring the music industry into the current streaming age. The MMA act aims to accomplish three major things: Ensure artists and songwriters receive royalties on music recorded prior to 1972 Effectively allocate royalties for music producers Update licensing and royalty rules for streaming services The US Senator most invested in pushing the MMA forward, Orrin Hatch, made a statement: “With this bill, we are one step closer to historic reform for our badly outdated music laws.” Leading up to the vote there was a great deal of heated debate surrounding the MMA. Particularly the part about pre-1972 royalties, which SiriusXM strongly opposed. A long list of all-star musicians including Paul McCartney and Katy Perry, plus songwriters, and executives stood by the MMA, and even threatened to boycott the radio company. Despite all the drama, it all came down to this vote. The Music Modernization Act is now in effect. Maroon 5 is set to headline the Super Bowl LIII halftime show next year! Frontman Adam Levine and the rest of the group are responsible for an incredible amount of hit songs over the years. First there was “Harder to Breathe” in 2002, then came “She Will Be Loved” in 2004. “Moves Like Jagger” shook things up in 2011. Most recently, Maroon 5 has been hitting it hard with “Girls Like You” featuring Cardi B, “What Lovers Do” with SZA, “Cold” with Future and “Don’t Wanna Know” with Kendrick Lamar. Maroon 5 follows up last year’s performer Justin Timberlake. Other Super Bowl acts include Lady Gaga, Coldplay, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars and Beyoncé. The band did not respond immediately to Rolling Stone for comment, although several reports confirm Maroon 5 is on lock for the big game. While the news surrounding this year’s Lost Lands since the festival ended has been less than stellar, most people who attended the event will tell you that it was one of the best of the year – myself included. However, some local residents of the Licking/Legend Valley/Thornville townships say otherwise. During a Licking Township Trustees meeting on Monday night, over 30 residents attended to yell and complain to the owners of the Lost Lands venue, Steve and Laura Trickle. Between 35,000-40,000 people attended Lost Lands this year, growing more than 10,000 over last year’s event. Officials report that the festival resulted in two deaths, a comparatively mild six arrests, and one (known) report of public nudity in a nearby neighborhood. Still, residents as far away as Granville (around 14 miles northwest, as the crow flies) were complaining of noise and rattling windows. Resident Katie Lawhead told the trustees, “The noise was unbearable. You couldn’t watch TV, couldn’t sleep. It’s a slap in the face to the people here. There was a guy walking around naked on drugs, people urinating on the side of the road, someone broke into a neighbor’s fence. It was just chaotic. Something has to be done.” Township Trustee John Holman used far more vitriolic rhetoric to describe the event. “I can truthfully attest, the previous four days have been the most violating, intrusive, disrespectful display ever to the residents of our community,” Holman said. “The nudity, the defecation, the fornication, the urination. Kids on school bus witnessed sex acts and full nudity on the way home from school. “This concert has been an assault on and an exploitation of our community. This has been an assault on our first-responders, safety forces, infrastructure, school system’s ability to transport children, peace and tranquility, and freedom in our own homes.” Officials from Lakewood Local Schools said Tuesday that no one had reported any of their school children being subject to witnessing sex acts or nudity. The Trickles listened to the community’s complaints with open minds, and apologized for what they could, and promised to do better elsewhere. “I’d like to apologize to everyone here,” Steve Trickle said. “It will get better next year.” “We have done music until 2, 3, 4 a.m. at every show, except county jam, to keep people entertained,” Laura Trickle said. “These people are 25, 26 and still up and having fun, and want to stay up until 2-3 in the morning. That’s the reason we go late. (If not) I can’t guarantee they’ll stay there.” “I made a deal with Lost Lands to quit the main stages at 12:30 a.m., and do small late-night stages in the campground,” Steve continued. “I know you could not hear stages after 12:30, as I personally monitor the neighborhood volume myself.” Other community members attended to stand up for the Trickles, as well. “Our community gets so much revenue from this,” Licking Trails resident Kim Ross said. “We’re fine with the concerts, when we like the music. We should have consideration for all the people who benefit from this.” Suzy Peters said, “My windows didn’t shake. My 2-year-old slept through the night. My son’s a firefighter and worked three days, and made enough to make his medical school payment. That was huge. He was one of thousands that was paid very, very well.” There is currently no indication that Lost Lands 2019 will not continue as scheduled. His latest single with Cato Anaya, “La Cumbiambera”, dropped a few weeks ago and rocked the charts. I’m proud to premiere with you his brand new music video for the single that is only available here exclusively until Friday! It’s a hypnotic 3 minutes that pulls you in the minute you press play. It’s no secret that the Two Friends are both geniuses, especially in the remix game. They have some secret formula, this incredible talent for flipping classics into modern day anthems in such a fresh and innovative way. Their latest endeavor takes on one of biggest hits ever written, “Otherside”, by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and honestly they hit this one out of the park. It’s driven by the helplessly catchy vocal hook of the original that’s backed by a beat that just makes you want to move. It builds perfectly into an electrifying drop, swelling and crashing with bright and beautiful melodies and progressions. Listen to the Two Friends remix to “Otherside” below! This past Sunday, seven people have died and five were left in a coma linked to drugs at an electronic dance music festival in Hanoi, Vietnam. The victims were attending Vietnam Electronic Weekend’s “Trip to the Moon” festival at West Lake Water Park and tested positive for an unspecified drug. This lead to local authorities scrambling to trace the substance and lead officials to ban all EDM festivals in the capital. “Police investigators are trying to figure out what type of drug that was,” deputy director of Hanoi police Nguyen Van Vien said to news outlets on Monday. Reports from officials state that both dead and coma victims are between 18 to 30 and that the coma patients are being treated in intensive care at two nearby hospitals. However, three of the five have woken up as of the following day. Meanwhile, one of the coma patients is being treated in Extensive Recovery while the other has shown responses but has yet to regain full consciousness. If all the confirmed deaths are drug-related, it would one of the world’s worst mass deaths at a music festival linked to narcotics ever. The “Trip To The Moon” festival was hosted Sunday evening by VEW in Hanoi’s West Lake district which is known for its nightlife and club scene. Hundreds of attendees flooded the venue and were spead across three stages. Some of the headliners included Yellow Claw, Headhunterz, and Ben Nicky among a fleury of local talent. Local police are currently confirming who were the perpetrators responsible for bringing the drugs into the venue. Pending a probe, authorities are saying that a ban on similar events will take hold. “The incident yesterday… was very painful. It was a great loss,” said Tran Xuan Ha, deputy head of Hanoi government’s propaganda department. This was VEW’s third annual festival held in the Vietnam and was aiming to be the largest one to date, according to local news. Connected Agency, the promoters behind VEW 2018, put out a statement on Facebook where they and the government officials can confirm that they had all the proper licenses and papers before the tragedy took place. They also said that the venue was responsible for the health and safety of the attendees, not themselves as promoters. However, they could not confirm anything else about the investigation. Mr. Tô Văn Động, the Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of the capital, issued a statement in which the licenses for events involving electronic music were withdrawn while any new licenses will not be given for such events in Hanoi until further notice. However, not all music festivals have been affected by this move. This all comes as a major shock to the EDM world as deaths from Lost Lands, Nocturnal Wonderland, and Defqon.1 Australia have been reported over the weekend. via LoopCentral, HindustanTimes This article was first published on Your EDM. HEYZ always manages to steal our attention… Let us count the ways: Schedule 1, Schedule 2, Schedule 3, and now, with Schedule 4. The mau5trap artist follows up a stream of 2018 releases with his most intoxicating yet as Schedule 4 takes form. It’s the secret finale for the producer’s debut Schedule 1 EP, and the perfect, vehement ending we didn’t know we were waiting for. With this standout production, HEYZ creates an intense, pulsing universe with sharpened, darkened senses. There’s a tradeoff between his energy and the haunting vocals of darkDARK‘s Genevieve Vincent, which proves to be an obsessive, must-hear combination. Each steady beat, each carefully crafted sound cuts with precision, but lingers for just enough time for reverberated impact. Simply put, it bangs. “I wanted to recreate those surreal experiences I’ve had in clubs when a record hits so hard it takes your breath away,” HEYZ reveals. We all know the feeling. Take us to the underground, play this track out, and we guarantee our hearts will skip a few beats. Since HEYZ joined mau5trap in 2017 he has cemented his spot as one of the label’s top rising talents. This new release continues an impressive streak with his darkest, and most menacing production yet — let Schedule 4 consume you as it has us. Apple has always been on top of the ad game. Going all the way to the original iPod ads, Apple’s commercials remain iconic. Apple’s deft use of music plays a big part of that success, picking songs perfect for each ad. For Apple’s latest iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max commercial, none of then ZHU himself provides the soundtrack. ZHU’s track “Chasing Marrakech” soundtracks Apple’s “Everything to Know” ad for the new iPhone XS. Released last year as part of the stardustexhalemarrakechdreams EP, “Chasing Marrakech” provides the perfect backdrop for the ad’s split-second editing. And while we may not have the ability to see music as colors, the ad made us think this song was destined to be colored gold. We’re a bit curious why Apple didn’t include a more recent cut from ZHU’s new album Ringos Desert, but the single does pretty much fit perfectly with the ad itself. What do you get when two of the most hype acts in recent memory just drop some absolute and indisputable fire? Answer: a pure blend of intrinsically unhooked melodies bound to an onslaught of four on the floor happy hardcore madness. Yultron and Gammer’s latest team up “Sleep At Night” just dropped with Insomniac Records and its without a doubt one of the most original pieces of the summer, combining a soft and beautiful vocal and breakdown section with an energized and fast paced, happy hardcore main section. The vibes definitely fit with this tune, reminding us of some of Gammer’s earlier work while at the same time bringing us up to date with Yultron’s impeccable production stylings. Lil Peep died November 15, 2017. XXXTentacion died June 18, 2018. Their posthumous collaboration “Falling Down” comes out tomorrow. The two apparently managed to make a song together before Peep’s death – the release was in limbo until X’s death, whereupon the mothers of each artist agreed to let it see the light of day. “From peep’s mom and I,” writes X’s mother, Cleo. The preview plays more like an ’80s British rock ballad than a modern day hip hop project, begging the question, “What does the rest of the song sound like?” We’ll find out tomorrow morning at 9am EST. While Lost Lands has already put out a statement regarding the two confirmed deaths during the festival this year, Excision has just put out a statement of his own. Lost Lands is like his child in many ways, so it makes sense that he would take these deaths so seriously in his own heart. “I apologize for my delay in addressing this on a personal level, I was and am still crushed by this, and honestly did not know what to say,” he writes. Lost Lands Family: pic.twitter.com/mCHOGNRtqB — Excision (@Excision) September 18, 2018 One of the deceased has been identified as Mario Symborski, who passed as a result of complications from pre-existing heart issues and MDMA. The other victim has not yet been identified. The responses to Excision on Twitter have been ones of support. This is not your fault nor do the true festival lovers blame you. For a second year festival that grew to be this huge, you did everything in your power to stay on top of things: cheap AND free water, medics, etc. Unfortunately not everything is in your control like weather and — Como La FlorLL (@shlayylmao) September 18, 2018 You can’t blame yourself Jeff!! Hell, you even talked about how you fired security for being shit and got new ones. You care. You did everything you could. But if someone wants to get high, they will. YOU DID EVERYTHING TO MAKE LL AMAZING MY DUDE. — chanc (@Chvnsay) September 18, 2018 None of this is his fault. He does not promote heavy drug use. He created a beautiful land for people to come together and enjoy MUSIC AND EACH OTHER, and people abused that, as well as abused the trust others gave them. — Sarah Mckee LOST LANDS (@sithprincess823) September 18, 2018 There will likely be another statement from Lost Lands or Excision in the coming weeks. While it’s not usual for new songs from major artists to be released on a Tuesday, The Chainsmokers’ new song “This Feeling” is anything but usual. Teaming up with rising country star Kelsea Ballerini, The Chainsmokers present a new country crossover song that has all the hallmarks of a Chainsmokers tune while still pushing their envelope musically. Soft piano notes and a subtle, thumping percussion bring the track in while Ballerini sings, eventually adding an acoustic guitar to the mix before the drop. The song is also unique in that the drop is only just about 10 seconds long before Drew comes in with his own vocals. The second drop isn’t much longer, clocking in at just 18 seconds. Then again, this is a country crossover record so you can’t have something obscenely long. Speaking with Zane Lowe, Ballerini admitted that “country music’s not just like a traditional sound any more” so “This Feeling” can easily fit within that realm. “[…] there’s like so many different branches of it,” she says, “and I think having these kind of collaborations people that have that stigma in their head of like ‘Oh it’s all about the truck’ you know they’re like ‘Oh wait I like this song. That’s a country singer? Wait let me check out more.’ And it kind of opens the opens the doors more which is kinda sick.” As for the album concept their team concocted toward the beginning of the year, Taggart says, “We want to put out an album and we want people to have look at a body of work representing a period of time of creativity. But you know we tour. We play 200 shows a year. So we’re like pretty much doing a show everyday. We just can’t sit in a room and make 14 songs 20 songs. I think we will at some point but like not right now.” Pall continues, “The fact that we can just write a new song today and it’s not like ‘Oh shit it doesn’t fit into the album we have to wait like ten months to put this out’ or something. You know I mean it’s just like oh now we just swap something out swap it around do whatever. I think like what we’re doing right now and where our music goes is gonna be the most challenging part of our career I think. Photo via Rukes.com This article was first published on Your EDM. As Toadface prepares to drop his debut album Bugs For Breakfast this Friday, Sept 21, we’ve got one last massive premiere ready for fans. Already known for a signature wonky style of bass music, “Courage” with Akamu is perhaps the pinnacle of such a style. The track makes heavy use of left/right panning and oscillators, all while pushing that insane blend of wobbly bass accentuated by silly samples from ’90s cartoon ‘Courage the Cowardly Dog.’ It’s exactly the kind of odd inspiration we’d expect from Toadface. “Courage” also represents the first track from Akamu in over a year – while we’re used to his almost flighty and brilliant bass sounds, we’re not hearing anything overtly familiar from him in this mix. Could this signify a change in sound for the Newport native? We’ll have to see. Psyche yourself up for this highly anticipated tour and launch yourself into the Bugs For Breakfast LP available on September 21 via Liquid Stranger’s label WAKAAN. Also be sure to catch Toadface on tour starting next month! This article was first published on Your EDM. Source: Your EDM Premiere: Toadface, Akamu – Courage [WAKAAN] Source

Here’s some rather unfortunate breaking news: a singer-songwriter is suing Daft Punk and The Weeknd for allegedly stealing “Starboy.” According to TMZ, singer-songwriter Yasminah has sued Daft Punk and The Weeknd for $5 million. The lawsuit claims the artists stole from her song “Hooyo,” which she co-wrote and sang and released in 2009. Yasminah claims “Starboy” rips off the melody, hook, tempo and clap structure from “Hooyo.” Listen to “Hooyo” below to compare: Yeah…there’s very little room for argument there. Yasminah worked with two producers on “Hooyo,” who previously threatened lawsuits for “Starboy” that settled out of court. But, Yasminah says she didn’t receive a cut of those settlements. If this lawsuit gains steam, the results could be similar to the 2015 court case pitting Marvin Gaye’s family against Robin Thicke and Pharrell for “Blurred Lines.” The family won the verdict saying “Blurred Lines” stole from Gaye’s song “Got to Give It Up,” setting a huge precedent for music copyright law in the US. Rest assured all eyes will watch this developing court case. This article was first published on Your EDM. Source: Daft Punk and The Weeknd Sued for Allegedly Stealing “Starboy” Source

Like any other year, this year’s Burning Man challenged its attendees physically, mentally, and emotional. However, unlike past years, police presence was at an all-time high in 2018 with BLM calling it nearly unconstitutional. That being said, police provide a much needed service on the playa. This year, 44 individuals were arrested, the majority of which were for drug possession and trafficking of drugs; one person was arrested for endangerment of a child. Overall, this year’s arrests amounted to 14 fewer than in 2017. “Citations are still being processed, however the arrests are accurate as of today,” Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen said Thursday, Sept. 6. “We are still attempting to break down our camp while still taking reports from a Festival that was supposed to be over on Monday.” Police also responded to a 911 call on Sept. 4 from a female reporting her vehicle was stolen by a male with a knife outside the south gate of the festival exit gate. Police were able to locate the vehicle in Gerlach, Nevada, a little over 15 miles southwest of Black Rock City. After a brief chase, police arrested 32-year-old Tiago Gomez of West Hollywood, CA on several charges. Also on Sept. 4, law enforcement found one attendee “unresponsive and not breathing.” The deceased, Sherman Nicholson, received CPR from medical staff on-site but “died at the scene unexpectedly,” according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office. Cause of death is currently under investigation. Lastly, the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the minor crash of a Cessna aircraft taking off for a routine sightseeing flight over the playa. Property was damaged, but no injuries were reported. via SF Gate This article was first published on Your EDM. Source: Burning Man By The Numbers: Arrests, A Car Jacking, and One Dead Source

BIJOU has been turning heads left and right with his menacing form of house music, especially heard here with his freshly released and incredibly dynamic Super Phat EP. As one of the frontrunners of Night Bass, he’s championing the popular sound and bringing something extra to every single one of his productions. With these four brand new tracks, BIJOU proves his style is more skillful and more deadly than ever. Outstanding isn’t saying enough of this body of work. Although choosing a favorite is virtually impossible, the title track “Super Phat” immediately caught our attention. Putting his best foot forward, BIJOU serves up his enticing breed of bass house for a true Night Bass anthem and show-stopping intro. Lyrics from Ushiqute drive the song into a territory all its own, and it’s refreshing to hear the vocals don’t sound overly produced. There’s a raw, yet refined way about this particular track and the ones to follow. BIJOU carries his same thrilling energy into “Do Not Disturb,” “Expert,” and “Better Than That,” each of which thrives in its own space on his artistic spectrum. The diverse nature of BIJOU’s talent is truly striking, and it’s easy to hear the conviction in his music. In his own words, BIJOU speaks on the EP — “Musically I feel like this EP really shows my range in house. It shows that I can produce more than just g-house bangers & gives everyone s preview for the future.” Truth. Every day, more and more talented producers continue to appear in a constant struggle to make their mark on the world. With so many vying for a limited number of slots on festivals and in clubs each year, it’s important to produce wisely and with intent. I’ve sat in on a studio session or two with Edison Cole, and I can safely say that his intent is stronger than most. His new song out today, “Need You Now,” exemplifies this work ethic brilliantly. Cole showed me a demo of the track, and after giving him some feedback, he came back with this final version that represents stadium future bass like the best of them. The massive, swelling chords in the drop are perfectly suited for festival stages, pushing a huge sound and wild melody with soaring vocals that would make anyone raise their arms in anticipation. Between the breakbeat drums and the juxtaposition of soft, serene with bombastic and suspenseful, Cole nails every note with precision and accuracy. It’s easy to picture any crowd swinging their arms in time with the drops and swells, dancing to the rhythm while their favorite song erupts through the speakers. A teen suspected of plotting a bomb attack on a nightclub in Germany has been arrested, according to multiple media reports. Hesse state police reportedly took the 17-year-old into custody on September 1, after US intelligence revealed the teenager’s alleged plot for a violent strike. The target: an unnamed gay venue in Frankfurt. At the time of the arrest, the suspect had instructions about how to make explosives and was seeking materials online. “Small amounts” of those materials were even found at the teen’s residence in Florstadt, according to a spokesperson. The suspect is currently being held under judge’s orders on suspicion of preparing a “serious act of violence.” The person’s name has been withheld for “privacy reasons.” H/T: Mixmag | Source: NY Post This article was first published on Your EDM. The Chainsmokers and Kelsea Ballerini are making country pop happen with their new collab “This Feeling,” due out tomorrow! When tragedy struck at Defqon.1 with the overdose of a 26-year-old in 2015, a father lost his son. Now, that same father has called on local leaders not to shut down the music festival. Premier Gladys Berejiklian of New South Wales has been vocal about her vow to close down Defqon.1 after two people died this past Saturday. It was also reported that 13 festival attendees were rushed to nearby hospitals and another 700 sought medical assistance. Nigel Pauljevic, 26, passed away after a taking ecstasy at Defqon.1 three years ago. After his friends attempted to revive him, paramedics took him to Nepean Hospital where he was pronounced dead. “Don’t stop the festival,” said Mita Pauljevic, Nigel’s father. “This is normal for kids to get together. Get rid of the dealers. When these guys commit several murders, it’s mass murder. They should get life.” In response to Pauljevic, Ms. Berejiklian said, “No parent should have to endure the heartbreak of losing a child to drugs. “That is why I want to ensure dance music festivals in NSW are safe and fun for young people. Unfortunately, with four deaths in five years the Defqon.1 event does not have a good track record and we are keeping all of our options open. We will do everything we can to shut this down. I don’t want to see this event happen again.” Since the Premier’s pledge, there have been calls to hold a summit to discuss the rampant drug problems in New South Wales. In 2019, a bipartisan drug summit will be hosted patterning one held in 1999. This overdue process comes as the landscape of drug paraphernalia and its spread have changed since the turn of the 21st century. Meanwhile, others have called for pill-testing to prevent the ingestion of harmful dosages or substances to people who are going to consume drugs anyway. Currently, the Labor party does not support pill-testing. Mr. Pauljevic struggled with an emotional testimony saying, “Why stop these young people enjoying themselves at these festivals? There is nothing wrong with that. I went to the first music festival in Australia, in Sunbury in Victoria.” Mr. Pauljevic said friends had invited Nigel to go to the festival even though he was not initially interested in going at all. “Three days before the festival, there were two carloads, one couldn’t make it with the car,” he said. “Nigel had his nanna’s car so they begged him and, because he is kindhearted, he said yes and drove them there.” In recounting what happened to his son the night of his death, Mr. Pauljevic added, “The only reason he took it was he wanted to be part of his friends. Peer pressure. They buy this stuff from China, cheap as shit. All they are interested in is money. They don’t give a f— about your daughters or my sons or anybody. You don’t stop the festivals, that’s normal for God’s sake.” Mr. Pauljevic stated that part of the solution to prevent more drug overdoses is to have music festival gates prevent drug vendors from entering at all. He referenced the security detail of music festivals in the United States and the United Kingdom. “To lose your son is the worst thing that can happen to a father,” said Mr. Paulkevic. “It’s the last thing on Earth I would have expected. When they told me they had to hold me up. I couldn’t believe it.” Source: The Sydney Morning Herald This article was first published on Your EDM.
