hmmm. well you could eq every sound tighter than an asian nun. so freq dont fight eachother. some ppl give everything reverb. to give it more presence. layering a synth with sub/mid/hi layers. compression. applying groove. ohh and mastering makes a big diff

depends what you mix as well i guess, harmonic mixing and looong smooth transitions are really important in prog and trance

i use impulse for hats usually, can get some really fidgety sounds going cus the way it alters the piano roll. to make it easier does the job for me

keep in mind he's only a beginner though. Just dont get too attached to Virtual DJ, move on asap to decks.
