Skrillex is gracing the internet with some inspiring words today, as his label OWSLA celebrates seven years of music and memories. Through the ups and the downs, the hard times and the good times, the man behind it all reflects on the journey thus far. “I’ve done a lot reflecting during this break I’ve taken from the music industry and I’ve continued to realize that it’s really all about the journey,” Skrillex shares. “7 years of music, culture, innovation, challenges. 7 years of falling down and getting back up; never giving up. 7 years of empowering young creatives. 7 years of believing in new artists before the rest of the world may understand. 7 years of lettings things go even when you love them the most.” He continues, “This is what gets me up in the morning. To say we are a record label would be putting us into a box. To say we are a clothing brand wouldn’t do us justice.” It’s true. In seven years, OWSLA has come a long way. It’s more than a music or fashion label — OWSLA is a culture. It’s easy to hear, visualize, and fully realize that sentiment through the work of musicians, artists, and the other creative minds behind the imprint. For Skrillex, it’s as simple as this: THE EXCHANGE OF WISDOM AND EXPERIENCE FOR UNHINGED ENERGY. “Owsla is just a stamp, an image, a ‘brand’ that represents whoever was involved in the experiences we’ve created. And in some way it’s kind of like a family of lost boys (and girls). Thank you for being involved.” And, thank you, Skrillex. Here’s to seven more. 7 Years of OWSLA Photo via Jas Davis This article was first published on Your EDM. Source: Skrillex Reflects On 7th Anniversary Of OWSLA Source

As Dutch composer Joep Beving played through the Mayan Warrior at Burning Man, 300 drones took to the night sky in a brilliant, beautiful tribute to Burning Man co-founder Larry Harvey. Harvey passed away in April of this year. In the video below, watch toward the bottom near the crowd when the whooping starts to see a swarm of 300 Intel® Shooting Star drones rise into the sky and one by one… disappear. Soon enough, they illuminate once again in a stunning display of choreography and technology. Watch as they dance around and create incredible patterns in the night sky, with varying degrees of luminosity and intensity in the drones’ on-board LEDs. Though we can only see them from one angle in the video, it’s enough of a spectacle to believe that the Playa fell still for the duration and looked up into the sky in awe. These are the same drones that made an appearance during Odesza’s performance at Coachella this year Video by @peterruprecht This article was first published on Your EDM. Everyone’s favorite masked maestro — Malaa — is back with “Cash Money.” Overnight he hit us with the new single he describes as a “dark & techno combo to kill the crowd.” It’s definitely that, but it’s also pure insanity. More than ever, we hear Malaa experimenting with his sound and pushing boundaries to meet our unorthodox dance cravings. “Cash Money” marks the second single off the forthcoming Illegal Mixtape Vol. 2, which is shaping up to be another stellar release from Malaa. This one is a straight up weapon that pops off even on a MacBook, so there’s no telling what this would do in the club. If you want to find out, be sure to catch Malaa on his Illegal Tour, which hits up Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, Seattle, and more starting next month through December. See full list of dates below and get tickets here. Back to the new single — this one pops off like an alarm or a fire drill so get ready to go crazy! Is this the end of Okeechobee? We sure hope not… For last three years, Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival has put on an amazing, well-rounded annual event for tens of thousands of attendees. Organizers have consistently booked a diverse roster with some of the biggest names in music. Skrillex, Kendrick Lamar, Porter Robinson, Flume, Halsey, and Travis Scott have all taken the stage, and Bassnectar has become a staple for three years running. Most notably though, in just a short time, the community has grown into a beautiful family. So, it’s beyond surprising to hear rumors of a possible end to such a top-notch music festival (as read here, here and here). According to The Festival Owl, there are some serious red flags popping up about the future of the event in Okeechobee, Florida. At this point, it’s unclear whether Okee will go on. “There is concern now with no announcements, or tickets,” The Festive Owl just updated. “I have reached out to a (normally) very responsive source and they have not been able to confirm any plans for 2019.” After an epic three years, Okee would most definitely be going out on top — but it would be a shame, considering how much music fans love it and the kind of culture the festival has cultivated. For many, it has become more than just another music festival, but a yearly tradition. Previous lineup releases have announced as soon as October or November. Whether or not Okeechobee is actually happening can be neither confirmed or denied at this point, but we can expect answers coming soon. Keep your eyes on Okee’s official website. Okeechobee 2019? Equipped with only her flawless voice and consistently indulging herself in the radio pop genre, Los Angeles local KIIRA blesses us with her luscious and anticipated new single “Worry”. Nightblue Music, Aux London, and Mr Revillz are just some of the dance music curators that have supported this artist on her journey already. ‘Worry’ embraces its electronic roots with well written lyrics and a catchy vocal melody by KIIRA, further showcasing what she is capable of having previously worked with the likes of Naomi Wild, vocalist of Odesza. Elegant plucks and arps surround KIIRA’s fantastically toned voice on this deep pop gem. With a soft and melodic appeal, the song is packed with potential for the dance pop audience. Absolutely smashing her performance on every song she releases, we should expect nothing less from her in the future. Be sure to follow KIIRA on Spotify for more music! Have you ever been standing at a silent stage, waiting for your favorite artist to come on, when suddenly the bass starts to rumble and the lights slowly increase in intensity, until finally the song you’ve been waiting to hear all night comes on? If that kind of thing might give you the goosebumps, you might also be a highly successful person. A new study led by Matthew Sachs, Harvard University researcher, alongside Robin Murphy, professor of experimental psychology at the University of Oxford, at Reading & Leeds festivals this past August shows an interesting connection between experiencing goosebumps during live entertainment and success. The study fitted 100 participants with devices to monitor their physiological responses to live music including heart rate and physical movement to the music. They found that over half (55%) of attendees who get goosebumps during live music also achieved higher grades and even earned 12% more than those who don’t. Those who experienced chills were more interested in creative activities such as baking (70%), painting (48%) and writing (40%). Getting goosebumps also correlated with physical and emotional health. Those who felt shivers told researchers they had a more positive mood (66% vs 46%) and enhanced overall well-being (88% vs 80%). Speaking about the research, Murphy said, “The phenomenon of goosebumps has intrigued us for many years and having the opportunity to test participants in a live setting has certainly provided some food for thought. “The results of the Barclaycard study are the first to show the different personality traits that characterise people who experience goosebumps. The evidence also suggests that being truly connected with live entertainment and getting goosebumps has an impact on our overall sense of well-being and mood.” Daniel Mathieson, Head of Experiential Marketing at Barclaycard, said: “Most of us can relate to experiencing goosebumps when watching live entertainment, and now we have a clear understanding of why this happens and what it means for us as individuals. “The results reflect the overwhelmingly positive impact music and live entertainment can have on our lives ranging from health and happiness to overall wellbeing. It’s truly exciting to be part of the first ever scientific study of its kind.” This article was first published on Your EDM. Illusionize is known for crafting some deep and hard hitting house tunes that have shook dance floors all around the world. The young artist is incredibly talented and continues to accomplish nothing but great things. His latest venture is a collaboration with vocalist Alex Joseph for their brand new single, “We Go Together”, signed to Armada, that can’t help but whisky you away the minute you press play. The two are a great team, as Joseph’s vocals carry perfectly on top of a melodic, driving beat. Overall, the track has the exceptional musical quality of Illusionize that has taken care to maintain its sonorous personality. “This track has been on my computer for over 2 years now. I had that bass of it on audio but raw. I made it into midi, changed several notes, used Sylenth to make the timbre and some plugins in the mixer channel. The final result was a bigger ‘punch’ in the bass.” Stream “We Go Together” below! This article was first published on Your EDM. Apple no longer ships free headphone dongles with new iPhones
Cupe posted a topic in DJ Headquarters
Apple’s keynote yesterday revealed the new iPhone XS, XS Max & XR. These new technological pieces of beauty will no doubt draw in a lot of new iPhone users, like our head of content who’s trading in his Pixel 2 for the XR. However, one piece of news is proving a minor annoyance for Apple customers: you won’t get a free headphone dongle with any new iPhone. Since Apple did away with the headphone jack in the iPhone 8 and X, it has provided a free dongle in the box to help with the transition. Now, apparently, it feels that its users either already have a dongle from their last phone, or they feel like it’s a widely enough spread product that it isn’t necessary to include one anymore. From another perspective, it’s just another example of Apple nickel-and-diming its customers. The dongle is sold separately by Apple for just $9, meaning it costs Apple even less to manufacture. And while $9 might not be much to someone already buying a $1099 phone, multiply that by millions of purchases and it’s a significant new amount of revenue for Apple. Apple's spec sheet: – Fast charging (if you buy an extra accessory) – Wireless charging (if you buy an extra accessory) – Headphone compatibility (if you buy an extra accessory) — Vlad Savov (@vladsavov) September 13, 2018 At the end of the day, it’s not a terribly huge grievance, but moreso an example of a company that has changed a lot since the death of Steve Jobs. iOS 12 will be available on Monday, September 17. It’s always an exciting moment when you find a new production talent or production duo that really match the level of the top guys touring an performing out there. Well today that comes in the form of the international duo, Alterglow. Comprising of French producer, Tim Aeby and Greek singer-songwriter, Andy Nicolas, this duo bring a fresh, dynamic sound to the electronic and pop sphere. Enjoy this summer inspired, melody driven and catchy debut track, ‘Dynamite’. Expect waves of bouncy basslines, smooth Daft Punk inspired guitars and of course those catchy vocal melodies. Enjoy! I first heard Gianni Marino on his collaboration with Luna May entitled, ‘Make You’. The punchy yet infectious drop on this original immediately drew my attention to the Dutch producer and his musical talent. Well good news for you electronic pop fans, he’s back with another infectious tune entitled, ‘Can you Hear Me’! This time teaming up with Swedish, singer-songwriter, ILY, Gianni brings us a smooth building track which has an 80s feel with its sound design and sustained vocals. This rolls in a singalong chorus matched with punchy and crisp vocal chops and percussion. Definitely a jam for any summer playlist, enjoy! This article was first published on Your EDM. Nicolas Haelg has always been one of my all time favourite deep and chill house producers since his infectious hits such as ‘My Lady’ and ‘Calling Your Name’. Sam Halabi on my radar too since catching my attention with his feel-good, piano house driven remix of Aretha Franklin’s track, ‘A Deeper Love’. Well these two powerhouses in deep and chill house have finally joined forces on this stunning yet super chill jam, ‘Simple Love’. The track draws you in the smooth guitar plucks and alluring vocals of Adon, climaxing with a catchy melodic chorus and a punchy deep house drop. I specifically love the post chorus guitar rifts which maintain Haelg and Halabi’s soulful flavour to every original and remix they take on. Excited to hear more groundbreaking tracks from independent Chill Your Mind Records this year which to match this smash. Enjoy! This article was first published on Your EDM. Darkwave is an interesting sect of electronic music, often misidentified as IDM or goth industrial. Truth be told, darkwave has combines many more genres to make its identity. With roots in punk, goth post punk and post rock, darkwave could be seen as EDM or IDM’s moody kid sister. In their first EP, Night Tongue take darkwave and ratchet it up with even more post-punk and goth sounds to make Achelous & Melpomene spooky, sexy and beautiful all at once. Having worked with post punk royalty like David J of Bauhaus and Love & Rockets, Steve Albini and Brian Chase of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, it’s no wonder this duo from Australia has a little more post punk in their sound than the average darkwave artist. It works well here, however, as there’s always something fun about listening to a piece of work and trying to figure out which parts are electronic and which are analog instruments. The lines are perfectly blurred on Achelous & Melpomene, and the EP thus becomes a perfect form of both genres and a great way for punk-leaning EDM fans to cut their teeth on the eerie and ambient world of darkwave. Named after the myth of the Greek myth of titan Achelous and ancient muse Melpomene’s tryst which spawned the sirens and meant to follow this timeless story through out its course, Night Tongue’s debut EP is three tracks of haunting, ambient bliss. The lead track, “Nautical Heart,” contains that perfect split of darkwave and post punk, while “The Gate” is actually a bit more towards post rock (think Nick Cave), but just as haunting and beautiful. The closing track of this mini EP is called “Heiros Gamos” is the most grounded in electronica and is a study in ambient music which follows a classical form. It’s up to EDM and electronica fans to decide if they like the form of darkwave and its connections to post punk and post rock, but with a group like Night Tongue and an EP like Achelous & Melpomene to bring these oft-neglected genres back to popular electronica, it seems the decision is easy. Night Tongue are definitely a duo to watch, as it seems they’re just getting started with their re-imagining of darkwave. Achelous & Melpomene by Night Tongue is out now and available to stream on Spotify and Soundcloud and can be purchased on Bandcamp. This article was first published on Your EDM. Kiril seems to be dominating Critical Recordings lately, with his first EP on the imprint under the Binary series and now with his new EP on Critical Systems. Kiril is a standout among the rash of Italian DnB producers hitting the charts lately in that his style is a mix of darkstep throwback grooves and steppy, fast, snare-heavy and techy modern vibes. He combines the best of both worlds in this breakout Critical Systems EP, and Your EDM has an exclusive first look at “Strike.” “Strike” is probably the best example of this 50/50 vintage darkstep/modern techstep blend that Kiril has going on the CRITSYS012 EP. The technical aspects of this track, especially the pitch, are what make it sound very current despite the heavy snares running through the beat and the darkstep-style sub bass, mid synths and ambient elements. The speed of “Strike” especially works to add a modern feel, as at its inception and through its golden age, darkstep was quite a bit slower than the standard 174BPM of today. In terms of pitch, this track’s speed and the speed at which Kiril generally works is at least 2005 or later. There’s also a phrase-punching screech effect that, along with a secondary kick, brings the track together in a very 2018 way. When the Critical Systems series EPs are released, the DnB world always pays attention because we know it will something innovative and different. In the case of Kiril, the innovation has been to perfectly blend old and new to create something unique and separate from any genres or time periods of drum and bass. It’s just DnB. Kiril’s CRITSYS012 is out on Critical Recordings on Friday, September 14. It can be pre-ordered on Beatport by clicking here. This article was first published on Your EDM. It feels like it’s been a been a while since Major Lazer put out new music, which is strange because they’ve actually dropped four new original tracks this year alone, most recently “Let Me Live” with Rudimental featuring Anne-Marie, Mr Eazi and M-22. But now the trio is getting ready to unleash a bunch of new music on fans with “new music all month.” In following tweets, they reveal songs “All My Life” with Burna Boy, “Okrant/Balance Pon It” with Babes Wodumo & Taranchyla, “Loyal” with Kizz Daniel & Kranium, and “Tie It Up” with Raye & Mr Eazi. With so many tracks set for release, we should be getting the first one this Friday, but no release date has yet been revealed. Mac Miller’s final studio album Swimming has seen a surge in success following the rapper’s unexpected death last Friday. In the wake of his passing, fans seem to have found comfort in listening to the hip hop icon’s sprawling catalog of music. Swimming, released just last month, is clearly one of the go-to records as it recently shot to No. 1 for a short time on Apple Music. Currently, the album sits at No. 2, behind Eminem’s Kamikaze. Songs including “Self Care,” “Ladders,” “Hurt Feelings” and “What’s the Use?” are amongst the most popular of the 13-track release. At one point, the rapper had seven albums in the top 31 on Apple Music. Miller’s body was discovered September 7, at his home in the San Fernando Valley. He suffered an apparent overdose and died at age 26. His music lives on… Mac Miller – Swimming This article was first published on Your EDM. Sometimes good things come in small packages. Like this remix EP for example. Autograf just unleashed a four-pack of stunning new remixes featuring Flyboy, LEFTI, Pontifexx and Kilian & Jo. “Gravity” and “Dead Soon” lay the foundation as these four producers let their imaginations run wild. Flyboy gracefully chills out “Gravity.” LEFTI gets groovy with it. Pontifexx transforms “Dead Soon” into a straight up dance anthem. And, Kilian & Jo turn down the tempo and turn up the flavor on it! There’s a little bit of everything here. An assortment of genres are finely represented, from reggae-inspired rhythms to house-driven beats. Odesza just hit us with an official version of track they’ve been playing out live for years! The duo’s most loyal followers couldn’t be happier, because this one has been a long, long time coming. Before now, the only way to hear this gem was to see an Odesza show. Toward the end of any given set, there’s a moment where Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight go as hard as possible and leave it all on the stage. It’s usually when “Loyal,” or some working version of it until this point, comes on and totally blasts the crowd with deep horns and all the feels at once. Odesza has worked this track to utter perfection over the years. “Loyal” builds up to its epic drop through deep tribal roots, with enticing chants and the duo’s signature drumline sounds in the mix. Now, that we have the finished result, it was well worth the wait. This is Odesza at their most fierce. Enjoy. P.S. It’s hard to believe that A Moment Apart came out almost a year ago! Well, this is a huge bummer. Carmada has announced they are breaking up and the timing couldn’t be worse. The duo, known for bangers like “Maybe” and “Embrace,” is splitting up due to creative differences that have grown over the last two years. Max Armata (Yahtzel) plans to take the reigns of Carmada, as Drew Carmody (L D R U) removes himself on the brink of a huge tour. “I’m truly sorry to leave right before we had planned to head around the country together and see all your lovely faces,” Drew writes in a statement. “Trust me, I wouldn’t be doing this now unless it meant good things for everyone involved.” It’s a bittersweet farewell, for sure. “Carmada has given us, without doubt, some of the best years our lives,” Drew says. The good news is despite their differences, these guys remain friends. They both still hope fans will come “sweat it out” for the Club Carmada Tour over the coming weeks.
