  1. Over the summer, festie goers by the thousands had their drugs tested at various music events across the UK. From Bestival to Boomtown Fair, Love Saves The Day to Y-Not, more than 8,000 total people came forward to get their stuff tested. This increase in on-site testing started as part of a harm reduction initiative backed by The Loop to keep music fans informed and safe. The nonprofit has made the benefits of drug testing very clear — the service helps point out substances of concern, provides valuable research, and identifies trends in the drug market. The organization provided seven festivals with “front of house” testing facilities: Bestival, Boomtown Fair, Love Saves the Day, Y-Not Festival, Boardmasters, Kendal Calling and MADE Festival. At other events, testing was carried out behind the scenes, including Parklife, Truck Festival, South West Four, Lost Village and Mistress Mary. The most popular drugs brought in for testing were MDMA, ketamine and cocaine. Learn more on drug safety and testing from The Loop. Source: BBC This article was first published on Your EDM. 2. By the numbers, Machine Gun Kelly was dissed 27 times on the new Eminem album Kamikaze, comprising 17.6% of all disses on the album. [Data] That’s a lot of times you have to defend yourself. “Im standing up for not just myself, but my generation,” Kelly wrote on Twitter. “im doing the same shit you did back in ur day. life is still real on my side, and i had to take time from the grind to defend myself from someone i called an idol. love, Rap Devil.” MGK has responded to Eminem on “Rap Devil.” The rapper drew Eminem’s ire in 2012 when he tweeted that Em’s daughter, Hailey, was “hot as f***.” Kelly gets some solid licks in on the diss track – check it out below. 3. Aside from being played in their sets this year, The Chainsmokers teased their collaboration with QUIX on Instagram back in June. Now, they’ve set the stage for the track’s release, responding “soon” to a fan asking when it will come out. Soon https://t.co/dYqaHWVUiu — THE CHAINSMOKERS (@TheChainsmokers) September 2, 2018 Along with other forthcoming collaborations with Aazar, Boombox Cartel, and Stoltenhoff, the Quix collaboration represents a start contrast to the poppier music the duo has been releasing up until their newest single with NGHTMRE, “Save Yourself.” Listen to a preview of the Quix collab below, and prepare for a proper release “soon.” Photo via Rukes.com This article was first published on Your EDM. 4. Brace yourselves, because there’s a new one from Armin van Buuren x W&W coming soon! These legends are known for monstrous festival tracks — and when they join forces, their sound is even more massive. From the same great minds that brought us “If It Ain’t Dutch” and “D# Fat,” we can expect another sure-fire banger. “New Armin van Buuren x W&W incoming,” the duo shared on social media. These main stage acts have always kept a great working relationship. Last we heard, Armin was teaming up with W&W under their alias NWYR last year. We can’t wait to hear what this collaboration brings! Stay tuned! 5. In a super unfortunate turn of events, North Coast Music Festival had to shut down yesterday due to close proximity of lightning and could not reopen the within the time of the permit. DJ Snake was scheduled as the headliner for the evening. After a long day of travel he was ready to go, but unable to perform because of the shutdown. In an amazing gesture, he showed up to the event anyways to meet with fans and take photos. What a dude! To make up for the cancellation, anyone with a Friday or Saturday pass was granted into the festival grounds for Sunday. North Coast detailed the situation for its attendees in a statement: The safety of our patrons and staff is our #1 priority. Due to close proximity of lightning, event organizers had to evacuate the festival. Due to continued threats of lightning in close proximity, event organizers could not reopen within the time of the permit. The good news is everyone is safe and the festival was able to go on as planned today. North Coast’s lineup this year was as strong as ever, with Axwell Λ Ingrosso, Yellow Claw, Snails, Gettoblaster and many more on the bill. North Coast’s 2nd Day Shutdown Due to close proximity of lightning, event organizers had to evacuate the festival & could not reopen within the time of the permit. 6. Bose is giving Sonos a run for its money with an all-new Alexa-powered smart speaker and soundbars. Amazon‘s popular voice assistant is about to take over the new line of Bose devices, and she can hear better than ever. Each speaker comes equipped with an eight-microphone setup ideal for picking up your voice even from far away or in particularly loud settings. It gets even better. Bose is promising “the widest soundstage of any smart speaker available today.” If you want this top notch sound for your home it’s going to cost you a pretty penny. The Bose Home Speaker 500 could be yours for $400. The Bose Soundbar 700 will set you back $800 — but on the upside, it’s sole purpose is to outperform every other product in its category. The smaller, thinner Soundbar 500 will run you $550. But, as Bose Consumer Electronics Division Manager Doug Cunningham clarifies, just one of these devices will do the trick. “All of our new smart speakers double up on functionality,” he says. “It takes just one Home Speaker 500 to deliver true stereo separation — there’s no need to pair two. Our Soundbar 700 and 500 are thin and discreet with jaw-dropping surround sound — whether you’re streaming Spotify or watching a movie.” The Bose smart speaker and soundbars will be available starting this October. 7. Yellow Claw and YOOKiE were both billed to play New City Gas last night in Montreal, Canada. And, if that doesn’t just scream bass heavy madness then I really don’t know what does. Welp, apparently whoever booked YOOKiE did not know what they were in for. Not only was the duo accused of going “too hard,” they were forced to cut their set short because — well — they were going “too hard.” Seriously, wtf? “Hey Montreal we’re sorry but unfortunately we were asked to cut our set short because our own music is ‘too hard,'” YOOKiE took to Twitter. “We’ll be back soon and we’ll give u a proper set!” From the sounds of it, Yellow Claw went off without a hitch. As for YOOKiE, they have an ambitious tour schedule through November. Soon, they’ll be hitting up Dancefestopia Music Festival and Lost Lands Music Festival — and we can bet on neither of those getting shut down. #freeYOOKiE Hey Montreal we’re sorry but unfortunately we were asked to cut our set short because our own music is “too hard”. 8. The second day of Made In America festival is popping off as we speak — with tons of leading hip hop acts and plenty of electronic musicians sprinkled across the lineup. Jay-Z went the extra mile in curating the 2018 Made in America lineup. Yesterday already saw amazing live performances from Post Malone, Meek Mill, Louis the Child, Juice Wrld, Elohim and more. And, that was only the beginning. Tonight, Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar, Alessia Cara, Pusha-T, Belly and more will take the Rocky stage. Meanwhile, Diplo, Tchami, Cashmere Cat, Jai Wolf, Anna Lunoe and others will spice up the hip hop leaned roster. It’s safe to say Philly will be treated to a legendary run of music tonight. And, those of us at home don’t have to miss out either. Made In America is live streaming all day via Tidal — and it seems you don’t even need a subscription to get in on the action. 9. Electronic dance music or EDM is why we’re all here, isn’t it? It’s the reason why we have this website and it’s why we talk about the Calvin Harris and Tiësto so much — and it’s probably why you’re reading this. But, although it’s pretty straightforward, it seems not everyone has a strong hold on the term. An interesting post popped up on Reddit this morning via r/EDM entitled “Calvin talking the truth.” The screenshot details an exchange between Calvin Harris, Tiësto and a fan, which they politely enough put in their place. To really absorb what’s going on, check out the second image in this post. “Big @tiesto at Omnia last night. What is happening in second pic,” Calvin shared. A fan proceeded to caption the second photo for him. “He is telling you: why did you stop producing EDM bro?” It wasn’t long before Calvin shot back with his response.”If you’re gonna use the term ‘edm’ then house music is included under the edm umbrella. If your edm umbrella is strictly progressive house then u need to get a new umbrella fella.” “Truth!” Tiësto followed up. Welp, now that we all know what EDM is — actually what is happening in that second pic? See below. 10. Idris Elba is a renowned actor around the globe, famous for roles in everything from The Wire to Thor. Elba also famously moonlights as a DJ and producer, playing festivals like Tomorrowland and even launching his own record label. It’s only inevitable Elba will collaborate with an artist outside the dance world, and it sounds like A$AP Rocky may be a likely candidate. Elba teased a possible, eventual Rocky collaboration during an interview with Matt Wilkinson on the Beats 1 radio station on Apple Music. Elba mentioned he and Rocky share a mutual friend in the form of Rocky’s engineer and producer. He admitted the collaboration with Rocky wouldn’t necessarily be music; Rocky has acted in films before and apparently wants to act more. Elba also mentioned how he and Skepta are friends, and that Skepta is connected to Rocky. All the pieces for a collaboration line up, but it seems to be a matter of “when,” not “if.” Fingers crossed a collaboration between Elba and Rocky pans out one day! Now, the series moves to Tokyo and Europe, showcasing the various cultures that have connected with his music and the effort it takes to make it all happen. At its heart, the “Ignite” series is more of an aftermovie with a broader scope, but the insight that commentary from ILLENIUM and his bandmates provide makes it that much more special. 12. Are you ready to feel old? One of Kanye West‘s greatest releases to date, Late Registration, just tuned thirteen years old. The College Dropout was a really tough album to follow up, but Kanye West has proven time and time again he’s fully capable of outdoing himself. Late Registration debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s coveted 200 chart and birthed a new era of hits including “Gold Digger,” “Heard ‘Em Say,” “Touch The Sky,” and more. Flash-forward to now and Kanye is still on top of his game. Most recently, he has been making waves with his seven-track solo release, ye, and collaborative Kids See Ghosts project and EP with Kid Cudi — both of which dropped in early June of this year. We love the “new” Kanye, but it’s great taking a trip down memory lane with the “old” Kanye. Listen here and revel in the reminiscent sounds of Late Registration! 13. A lot of heart and soul goes into every Odesza performance, but preparing for a gig like Coachella is an entirely different animal. Now, we can go behind-the-scenes with the dance icons as they show us exactly what happened in the weeks and final moments leading up to that magical performance. “When we first found out about Coachella we all kind of had a mini panic attack,” Harrison Mills opens up in the video below. “It was a really strange moment of excitement, but also knowing that we really have to prove ourselves.” Odesza’s performance at Coachella involved talking through a lot of ideas, taking a lot of risks, adding a lot of elements, and not being totally certain if any of that would translate onto their huge canvas. Breaking it down by pre-production, visuals, rehearsals and through showtime, the duo and their team walk us through their dream that finally became a reality. The biggest takeaway: It’s all in the details. Down to the micro-second. Those little moments are what made this massive, epic show feel intimate and special at the same time. 14. The Chainsmokers surprised everyone when they threw down one of the craziest sets at Ultra Music Festival this year. Those who were expecting a chilled out, pop-infused set got to see firsthand how hard these guys can throw down. They absolutely crushed. Now, The Chainsmokers want to know, “What act surprised you the most from festival season this summer?” The duo took to Reddit to initiate the conversation and so far there’s definitely some good interaction on the thread. Comments with the most upvotes include Virtual Self, Graves, Odesza, G Jones, Sullivan King and Whipped Cream. And, Salvatore Ganacci, but let’s be real — did you actually see him live or just a meme of him on the internet? Either way, some truly solid acts are up for discussion here. The Chainsmokers actually regularly post to reddit and engage with fans on threads, so this isn’t even out of the norm for the duo. 15. We’ve already gone into great detail as to how JAUZ’s debut album, The Wise and the Wicked, measures up. But beyond just the album, its release sets into motion a long and involved new direction for the producer. Jauz explained his plan on Twitter, first giving praise to the artists he worked with on the album, and then going into greater detail how it will develop over the course of the next 2-3 years of his career. “The first taste of this you’ll be able to experience at Lost Lands this year with my first ever Wicked set,” he writes, “but again – that’s just the tip of the iceberg.” I wrote this the night of the release but I think it still makes sense today pic.twitter.com/PNqrB5WZBE — JAUZ (@Jauzofficial) September 1, 2018 Part 2 pic.twitter.com/5eFTttMyEZ — JAUZ (@Jauzofficial) September 1, 2018 Listen to Jauz’s debut album below and read our review here. 16. The message behind the new collab from Hardwell & Kaaze is simple — but the sound is larger than life! Hardwell has been playing out “This Is Love” during his sets and it’s been gaining massive attention. Now that the single is officially released, the vocal-driven festival anthem all about love can finally shine to its fullest potential. Just as there can never be enough love, there can never be enough songs about it! Rich chords, addictive melodies, and a show-stopping performance from Loren Allred all lead “This Is Love” straight into that big room territory Hardwell is known for. He says the track “gets so much love during my shows, so I’m super thrilled with this one. “Let’s show the world some more.” Listen and get “This Is Love” for your own collection right here! 17. Now that Avicii’s Los Angeles home has officially been sold, the time has come to decide what’s to be done about his belongings within. It’s more than likely that his family will bring many of his possessions back home to Sweden, and other things may be auctioned off at an estate sale, but at least one piece of furniture is getting the send off it deserves. According to Lynda Murray, who runs an interior design company in Los Angeles, the producer’s Steinway piano is being sent to a museum in Stockholm. It’s not clear how Avicii fans found the post initially, but they’ve entered the comments en masse to express their appreciation for the move. It’s also not clear in which museum the piano will end up. See the post below. Photo via Rukes.com This article was first published on Your EDM. 18. Afrojack‘s brand new, 14-track album has arrived just in time for the weekend. Which is a good thing, because it’s definitely a party starter! From addictive club bangers, to hyped up festival anthems, to pure, melodic wonders — it’s all in there as Afrojack expands his sound like never before. While some tracks have been previously released, there’s also plenty of that new new from the worldwide DJ/producer to behold. Press Play is packed with plenty of live set fixtures and collaborations with artists who are signed to Afrojack’s very own Wall Recordings, including Chico Rose, Chasner, DISTO and Jewelz & Sparks. Collabs like “My City” with DISTO, “Let It Rip” with BROHUG and Titus, and “Flawless Victory” with Ricky Breaker are just a few of our favorite collabs that only scratch the surface with the amount of variety offered here. Here’s what Afrojack has to say about his exciting new release: “For me, this was more of a journey to show a different side of me with the different styles of music I’ve been doing. I’ve been playing a lot of tracks with the new artists I signed to my label in my sets, so it made sense to put out all of the music fans have been hearing since Ultra this year on the EP. You’ll hear familiar and unfamiliar sounds with some great artists and I can’t wait for the fans to hear it all.” Despite it being pushed to press as an EP, something this big can only be described as an album. 19. Let’s say, for argument’s sake, that there existed drone footage of Swedish House Mafia’s Ultra Music Festival 2018 reunion… how much would you pay for that footage? And not even the entire set – just 44 seconds. Probably $20 max, right? Well, SkyLabs, a tech company specializing in innovation with an arm for drones, is currently selling that footage for a lot more. The footage was uploaded to Videoblocks.com, a subscription website that deals in photos, videos, and audio. A normal subscription will run you $39/mo, but even with a subscription, you’ll still have to put down $199 for the video. And if you’re not a subscriber? You can still get it, but the price goes up to $329. So far, predictably, no one has ponied up the dough. You can see the footage here for what it’s worth, but you’re better off just watching this rip of the live stream instead. 20. One of the hottest collabs of the summer has been totally recharged for this brand new, five-track remix pack! So no matter your style, there’s something here you can kick it to! “Jackie Chan” by Tiësto and Dzeko with Post Malone and Preme, with all its star power, stands on its own as it is — M-22, Lookas, Hugel and Sebastian Perez all hear it a little differently, each worth a good listen. And, to top it all off, the legend Tiësto has taken the track out for another spin himself especially for the occasion. Most of remixes are kept at an agreeable house speed, but each rock an entirely different vibe. Lookas noticeably takes the biggest risk, shifting the BPM for a trap-charged beat. There really is no right or wrong here, and each remix is just as infectious as the next (thanks to Post Malone). But, we gotta say — Tiësto certainly knows what’s up. His new version is an easy favorite. 21. Steve Aoki & Nicky Romero are two producers that seem to have a constant flow of new music, and this week their paths are crossing in an interesting way. The two have collaborated on a remix swap of their recent releases — Nicky Romero’s “Me On You” and Steve Aoki’s “Lie To Me.” Each have transformed the other’s single into not just one but two totally different vibes. Steve Aoki presents his “Vibes Are Everything” remix for “Me On You, as well as his “Double Time Fun Remix” version for the same track. On the flip side, Nicky Romero shares his own remix of “Lie To Me,” and a lively festival edit to go with it. It sounds like these guys had an absolute blast reinventing these songs for each other! 22. It’s been a long wait for fans, but for Jauz it must have felt like a lifetime. His debut album The Wise and the Wicked is officially out today, featuring 23 tracks and a concept album that is as ambitious as it is impressive. Split into four chapters, generally alternation between “Wise” and “Wicked,” the album is best experienced as a whole – but that isn’t to say that it doesn’t have some damn good singles. Jauz is presenting this project as a concept album, so I’m going to do my best to review it as such. Concept albums are no stranger to dance music, with Nero’s Between II Worlds, Deorro’s Good Evening, or Joker’s The Mainframe. Concept album: an album featuring a cycle of songs expressing a particular theme or idea, as opposed to a simple collection of songs presented in an album format The concept for Jauz’s album is explained in greater depth here, but for sake of brevity, it revolves around a sort of yin/yang dichotomy between wisdom and wickedness. The album begins with a prologue featuring Madsonik, followed up by collaborations with Tisoki and the already-released single “In The Zone” with Example. In this dystopia – the wealth gap is about to reach its limit, which will leave only the ultra-rich minority, and the completely impoverished majority with no middle class whatsoever. From these two financial “castes,” two seperate alliances have formed, each hell-bent on using their own methods and techniques to inspire and empower the masses, and save the world in their own image. The reference to “Babylon” is obvious; in Jewish tradition, Babylon symbolizes an oppressor against which righteous believers must struggle. In Christianity, Babylon symbolizes worldliness and evil. This, we can assume, is the Wicked. “In The Zone” must therefore be the Wise, though any obvious reference here is absent. The first chapter of the album is The Wise, containing collaborations with Kiiara on “Diamonds,” as well as fabrice and Krewella on the remaining two. The Wise inspire the masses by using intelligence and knowledge, and hope to find a cure for the ailing earth we live on with new groundbreaking technologies. They believe that only the truly adept should survive. Song titles like “Diamonds” and “Soldier” convey this idea and bring it to life, along with the comparatively brighter instrumentation and poppier sound found in the first chapter. The second chapter of the album is The Wicked, bringing back already-released singles “Motherfuckers” with Snails and “Acid or Techno,” which was premiered the day before the album. It also introduces the long-awaited ID “Get Widdit” with XX92 and Bru – C. On the other side, The Wicked believe in full anarchism, using anger and aggressiveness to grow their ranks, and will eventually let the modern world burn itself to the ground so it can be rebuilt in a more sustainable way. The tone of these songs is noticeably darker and more primal, more sinister, than the previous three Wise songs. Rather than poppy rhythms and bright tones, these songs employ a harsher synth palate and even get into acid techno territory, which is definitely new for Jauz. The allusion to “anarchism” and “aggressiveness” in the world description found in these songs is easily apparent, and helps to build out the full scope of the world that Jauz is attempting to create. From here, the album switches back to The Wise, with three entirely new tracks featuring Adventure Club & Kyle Pavone, Ducky, and Mike Waters. But the plot thickens, The Wise celebrate music and creativity in ancient theaters, concert halls and in front of monuments. Their music aims to teach, and is more catered to the intelligent. While the music of the The Wicked is more primal, fueled by energy and anger. They share their sounds more publically, under bridges, in abandoned buildings, in the middle of the streets. Once again, we return to a poppier sound, but something has also changed… these sounds, having now heard the Wicked, are presented in contrast and retaliation rather than as standalone pieces. They, in effect, have something to war against. The palate is brighter but the tone is more aggressive, so to speak. “Frequency” is a perfect blend of Jauz and Adventure Club sounds, bringing that old school melodic dubstep sound to the forefront with a new blend of bass and distortion. The Ducky collaboration “Rave With Me” puts a new school twist on old school dubstep, blending brighter vocals with classic dark wubs. Finally, the last song in this chapter, “Fade” with Mike Waters, is one of the finest drum & bass tracks that I’ve heard this year. I could easily imagine hearing it released by Hospital Records and I wouldn’t be phased. After this set of tracks, the Wise and the Wicked fade away to reveal a third sect… the United. Their rivalry comes to an end, after chapters of the two castes opposing each other, a third party enters, The United, who are fueled by passion to create a better world. As outcasts of both parties, they have seen the errors both sides have made and also the strengths each side possesses. They have realized that this fight is not between two sides of humanity, but between all of humanity itself and everything that corrupted both sides into sinking our world deeper into darkness. As a concept album, this is where The Wise and the Wicked loses me a bit. The final seven tracks are fairly disjointed as far as theme and sound go, with various tracks going harder or softer without any apparent reason. This could be boiled down to the melding of the Wise and Wicked, but I feel like there should have been some sort of pattern to it regardless. Fan favorites “Gassed Up” with DJ Snake and “Keep The Rave Alive” with Lazer Lazer Lazer can be found in this chapter, along with tracks like “On Fire” and “Back Again.” My biggest complaint about this chapter is the ending: “Super Fly.” As a track, it’s good, there’s nothing wrong with it. But as an album finisher? It feels like more than a cliffhanger; it feels like someone took the final 20 minutes of a film and just snipped the reel. Overall, Jauz’s debut album is wildly ambitious and, for the most part, hits all its targets. It flounders a bit from time to time, often getting caught up in its own world-building and losing sight of the grander picture, but there are plenty of powerful singles to take away from this collection if you’re not a fan of the concept. Regardless, The Wise and the Wicked will surely go down as one of the top albums of 2018. Listen to it in its entirety below. Photo via Rukes.com This article was first published on Your EDM. 23. Avicii’s retirement in 2016 and his subsequent recent death in 2018 have become a wake-up call for many in the dance music world to the dangers of incessant touring and the importance of mental health. So far, there haven’t been any announcements of fewer tour dates for the sake of a DJ’s mental health (at least not publicly), but we imagine that many DJs have taken the lessons of Avicii’s life to heart. Still, many continue to push themselves to the limit, especially the ones at the top who do more than just play shows: they also appear on radio shows, do interviews, press shots, music videos, and more. One of the DJs who most takes Avicii’s life lessons to heart is Alesso, who recently spoke to NY Post about his late friend. Many wouldn’t know this off the top of their head, but Alesso and Avicii used to be childhood friends who went to the same school. “I see a lot of myself in him, ’cause we come from the same city, we went to the same school, we knew each other,” Alesso says. “We used to be close and then we both had our own careers.” “People come up and say, ‘Oh, you guys have the best life. You just tour all around the world, stay at fancy hotels, DJ and make money.’ But then we also experience pressure, and expectations, and stress and all these things. “We’re basically these guys staying at home making music in front of a laptop, not being that social,” he tells NY Post. Alesso will perform a tribute to Avicii on Electric Zoo’s main stage this Sunday. If you’re attending, we highly recommend you don’t miss that moment. This article was first published on Your EDM. 24. 4B dropped “Ice Cold” back in the beginning of July, and he’s back now with an absurdly massive 18-track remix pack for the single, with plenty of new names we’ve never seen before. Of course there are some that ring bells – Junkie Kid, Bailo, Jace Mek – but the goal of this EP seems to be to give unknown producers a chance to shine. Let’s see if that works. Michael Sparks puts forth a wild bass house remix that plays with the bassline in a new way, leaving plenty of space in the lead synth and not overloading it with bass. Duckworthsound gives another example of bass that somehow bridges Jersey club, bass house, and electro house all in one, giving it a vastly unique signature that might put some off, but excite others. TYEGUYS opt for the hard trance route, pulling out psytrance sounds blended with hard dance, a favorite style of Kayzo as we’ve seen. Which remix is your favorite!? Let us know. Check them all out below. This article was first published on Your EDM. Source: 4B Drops Insane 18-Track Remix Album For “Ice Cold” Source
