Alesso just wrapped up Good Morning America‘s Summer Concert Series with live versions of some of his most famous hits. The producer was already in the NYC area for Electric Zoo, so it was a prime opportunity to take over the morning show and share his music with the rest of the country. Opening with his brand new single “Remedy,” Alesso hit the stage with collaborator Conor Maynard. Then, he took it back a couple of years with “I Wanna Know,” and even farther, to the classics like “If I Lose Myself” and “Heroes.” Tracks that will surely stand the test of time. It’s not everyday GMA has the opportunity to host dance music legends such as Alesso. In just a short time, he inspired with his music and gave words of wisdom for all the dreamers watching from home. His advice for aspiring producers: “Stay hungry. I know a lot of people say that, but just be fearless. Be different. Trust your instincts. Hard work, really.” Watch Alesso on GMA below! Eminem left no one untouched on his latest album Kamikaze, which seemed to target all of his old beefs in one glorious 45-minute album. There were 20 distinct targets on Kamikaze, including a revived beef with South African hip hop/dance duo Die Antwoord. The two got into some beef in 2017 when Eminem referenced the duo on “Untouchable” off Revival, saying, “I’d rather hear ‘em say “Die N-word” than Die Antwoord / Ninja, now it’s better disguised banter.” Die Antwoord responded with a video explaining how to properly pronounce their name, with what seemed like a really softball diss at Em thrown in for good measure. For all intents and purposes, that was the extend of the beef until now. On “Graduate,” Eminem raps: I know there’s people that are pissed about the way I misprounouced a name, “DIE ANTWOORD!” Fuck, I still can’t say this shit, but how quickly they forget Who the fuck I was now Ninja try to duck my slugs To let ya girl get fucked by Muggs I’d like to give a shout to Cypress This can’t be real, you dissed me and I was just tryin’ to Give you a shout—now get the fuck out my rhyme book! Mark this down as one of the most random beefs of 2018, but Die Antwoord has a (entirely sarcastic) response to Em which you can watch below. This article was first published on Your EDM. Following his “Pouring Rain” single featuring Vic Mensa in late July, Emmit Fenn is back with his second single from his ‘The Grey Area’ hip hop inspired project. Emmit teamed up with Drew Love (from THEY.) who has had a big year collaborating with the likes of G-Eazy and The Chainsmokers. “Without You” is a devilishly slow song, plugging along with the help of delicately placed piano chords and echoing hums from both Drew and Emmit. “I feel like it’s a song that rings true to anyone who is going through the roughest part or tail end of a relationship, when you’re just fed up and really don’t have love for the person anymore. It was a very organic record and I’m honored to be a part of it.” – Drew Love Emmit’s anticipated ‘The Grey Area’ project is scheduled for October with confirmed features of Vic Mensa, Drew Love, Sylvan Lacue, Mick Jenkins, IshDARR are more. The project consists of unique beats produced by Emmit and his silky vocals on the hook while other artists tell their stories on the verses. Listen to “Without You” below. Techno lovers will party anywhere. Give them a coal mine, or a castle, or literally, anything underground and they’ll go crazy! For Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) this year, they’re taking the party to one of the most unexpected and entirely deserted locations the area — all for the sake of dance music. Bijlmerbajes prison is set to host three distinct parties put on by Audio Obscura over October 18 through October 20. The setting, described as “a sinister and defunct penitentiary,” is nearby Amsterdam’s Amstel railway station, a prime location for ADE attendees. If the location doesn’t get you, the lineup definitely will because Seth Troxler and Honey Dijon are bringing the sounds of Chicago and Detroit to the famous prison to start things off right. The next night will take a dark turn, as Electric Deluxe and Dystopian promise to showcase “techno in its finest form.” Finally, Nina Kraviz and friends of her label will close out the epic three-day rave. This brings a whole new meaning to the term “prison riot.” Tickets go on sale on September 5 at 12pm CEST. 10/18 – Audio Obscura x Seth Troxler & Honey Dijon at The Prison 10/19 – Audio Obscura x Electric Deluxe & Dystopian at The Prison 10/20 – Audio Obscura x Nina Kraviz presents Tрип at The Prison Audio Obscura at The Bijlmer Prison H/T: Mixmag | Image via Audio Obscura This article was first published on Your EDM. Hard trap continues to grow with an unprecedented momentum, influencing the sounds and styles of both top billed acts and up and comers alike. With acts like SAYMYNAME and Carnage spearheading the hard trap movement, there’s been tons of room for growth with rising acts now getting into the scene. One of the latest tracks that dominated hard trap sets at EDC Las Vegas this year was “Darkness Follows”, from Freaky and Blvckjesus, both gaining traction in their own respects. This massive tune turns the volume way up, sampling the ever ominous Bane before dropping into some of the most proper hard trap out there right now. It is easily a must have for hard trap sets. Snap is trying everything it can to make Spectacles happen… Back for another round, the parent company of Snapchat is introducing Nico and Veronica. No, those are the names of the people in the photos. Well, maybe — but they are definitely the styles of the social media integrated shades they’re wearing. These new frames are the latest Spectacles 2 designs, but look more like traditional sunglasses than either of the previous models. Not only are they pretty snazzy, Nico and Veronica pack in all the same functions of the original Spectacles 2, but with polarized black lenses and matching black frames. A black protective case is included for a grand total of $200. The traditional Spectacles 2 first introduced the ability to take photos instead of just hands-free videos. Plus, water resistance to make the sunglasses more practical than the first generation. They are still available for $150 — but the $50 upgrade will get you on that Nico or Veronica level. Spectacles 2 are available online today in initial limited quantities. Shop here. Meet Nico and Veronica Meet Nico and Veronica. Two new styles. Now with polarized lenses. #Spectacles. Samsung‘s foldable smartphone is one of the most highly-anticipated handheld devices in recent memory. And now, thanks to a new report, we finally have a confirmation and prospective timeline. CEO of Samsung’s mobile division DJ Koh just revealed to CNBC that Samsung will release a foldable smartphone this year — with a potential unveiling as soon as November. He hints that an official announce could come during the Samsung Developers Conference, which takes place in San Francisco that month. Speaking on the new foldable device, Koh said it’s “time to deliver.” What bloggers and tech enthusiasts have been calling the ‘Galaxy X’ or the more fittingly the ‘Galaxy F’ will most definitely be available in the foreseeable future. Although we still don’t know specifics on a full launch or when the device might go on sale — we do know that Samsung knows there is a market for these foldable devices. The hype is real. Excision Reveals 5-Story Tall Second Main Stage At Lost Lands
Cupe posted a topic in DJ Headquarters
One of the big announcements made very early on for Lost Lands 2018 was the introduction of what would essentially be a “second main stage.” There wasn’t any information about this stage aside from the implication that it would host names just as big as the other main stage, and that it would likely be just as grandiose. Now, Excision has officially announced the second stage will be called “Wompy Woods” and it is going to absolutely tower over the crowd at 5-stories high. (Sorry photographers in the media pit.) Lost Lands officially begins in 9 days and the festival app goes live today so you can see set times and figure out who you’ll have to see and who you’re going to need to miss. Officially announcing our brand new 2nd main stage: Wompy Woods!! So stoked to play on this 5 story high BEAST!! ps. Since the Brookes Brothers released their 2017 epic LP Orange Lane, it seems their release tactic has changed a bit, and it’s definitely different from how other producers are releasing lately. Rather than focusing on EPs or even another LP, the brothers Brookes have released a rash of remixes of Orange Lane tracks, and now their intention is to release another rash of originals themselves over the course of the rest of 2018. “Every Minute” is the first such track in this upcoming series. With many of the tracks on Orange Lane being so unconventional, this new track is a return to form for the Brookes boys with its dancefloor-friendly liquid DnB sensibilities. It’s also a return to the Drum&BassArena label and indee their first free-floating single on the label after doing a couple of compilations. With the fun and soulful end of summer vibes of “Every Minute” and a curiosity about where the Brookes Brothers will go next, Your EDM caught up with the fraternal duo to find out where they get the inspiration for such chill vibes and what’s next both in their string of upcoming singles and in their career. It’s been a minute between the release of this track and the Orange Lane LP, with a few other tracks in between. Is this a preview single for more work to come? We wouldn’t call it a preview as such but it’s the first of a bunch of new tracks that we are planning to put out over the next 12 months. Our main focus now is putting together a steady stream of singles – writing albums can take a while and we want more constant music coming out, so we’re focusing on singles and EPs for now. How did you decide on the style for this track? How do you see your overall style evolving since Orange Lane? We see our albums as opportunities to experiment and push our sound in different directions…for ‘Orange Lane’ we put that club mentality on the backburner and wanted to make something that could work equally well listening at home. We felt really happy with what we achieved, but after such a challenging album-writing cycle it felt right to go back to our natural sound, so this was a return to a sort-of comfort zone for us and what people know us best for. Why did you decide to release “Every Minute” on D&BA rather than Viper? We have a longstanding relationship with the guys over at D&BA. They’ve always been proper scene stalwarts and very passionate about the music. We were working on a few different ideas when Risky at DNBA heard an early version of “Every Minute” and loved it. From then on it’s been one of the smoothest releases we’ve been involved in, and an absolute pleasure to work with those guys. You guys are known for your melodies and vocal pairings. What spoke to you about this vocal sample? Did you build the musical melody around the vox or was it the other way around? Sometimes a vocal hook just catches our attention and we’ll go straight in and use it as the centerpiece for the track. It was like that with “Every Minute”. We built the track around the vocal. It often works the other way round but we felt this vocal hook was screaming out for us to work around. Were there any other tracks or artist you can say that inspired this track? We listen to a wide range of artists and a lot of influences creep in. We’re always inspired by soul music and the vocals from the Motown era. The intro on “Every Minute” combines a 1960s vocal hook with some 80’s tine piano sounds, then the more modern DnB vibes kick in – we love to combine the flavors of different musical periods to create something unique and fresh. What kinds of artists and sounds normally inspire your work, if you had to pick a few? We love all sorts of music, it’s hard to pick one sound or style as we enjoy so much different stuff. We take a load of influence from gospel, R&B, jazz and soul music, mixed with general electronic music influences, specifically DnB of course. Melodically one of our major influences is Stephen Sondheim. You just played here in the US at Innovation in LA. How did you find that experience? What did you like about the US scene and how was is different from the UK and Europe? We love playing the States and always feel a lot of love from our fans there. The US scene is like one big spread-out family which is a lovely thing. Here in the UK it can feel quite fractured as you have your different camps and labels doing different things. We’re not particularly cliquey ourselves so we like the all-embracing vibe of the US DnB scene. Having said that the UK scene is where we grew up and we got a lot of love for the people working in the UK DnB community. We’ve pretty much grown up with a lot of them! What other festivals and shows are you touring at the season comes to a close? The season’s just finishing now, we’re doing Pierjam in Hastings next weekend with Chase & Status – after that it’s back to the clubs for another year. What other new projects do you have coming out? Any collabs? We have some collabs in the works, we’re doing a few more collabs again at the moment. Don’t want to give too much away but you’ll hear more details soon! Our next release is in September reuniting with Breakbeat Kaos…DJ Fresh has revived the label to celebrate its 15 year anniversary. We have two tracks on there, “New Wave” feat. Georgie Allen and “Headlock.” Following that, the plan is to continue to roll out singles for a little while until our next album adventure! “Every Minute” is out now on Drum&BassArena and can be purchased on Beatport. Keep an eye out for more single releases from the Brookes Brothers coming up soon. This article was first published on Your EDM. For the last year and a half, Hannah Wants has been battling breast cancer — but she has kept it on the down low until today. Now that she feels comfortable enough to share her story, the world renowned DJ is finally opening up about her eye-opening journey and why it has changed her life for the better. In a deeply personal and revealing statement, Hannah begins her message to fans and supporters. “It’s exactly 18 months to the date I found out I had breast cancer. I DJ’d at my U.K. tour date in Cardiff that very night and in Bournemouth the next day. On March 14th I had surgery and I completed my U.K. tour in Birmingham on March 18th – yes I was very sore the next day! Although I DJ’d and danced like I was happy and fine the reality was my world had just turned upside down…” She continues: “If there was any type of person who epitomized the ‘It’ll never happen to me’ attitude it was me. Rarely ill, strong minded, positive, never smoked, not overweight, fit and healthy (or so I thought). Too busy living my dream that never once did I stop to reflect on my reality. “ For Hannah, this battle runs much deeper than her diagnosis, or health and wellness — it’s spiritual. Looking back, she realizes she had been chronically stressed for years and she believes pressure she put on herself was affecting her at a “cellular level.” From diet and exercise, to the products she uses, to the drinks she passes up, and the mentality she keeps, it seems everything is changing for Hannah. There’s definitely something for everyone to take away here. Read the entire statement below and be sure to send some encouragement Hannah’s way. Another Burning Man has come and gone — and now that everyone is back on the grid we’re hearing about all the amazing live sets and other dope happenings we missed out on. Diplo is just one of the tens of thousands of Burners with a whole lot to catch us up on. The DJ/producer juggled a range of sets including an afro house set at Robot Heart, a trap set at Camp Questionmark, and a deep house set at the Solriser art car. But, the set everyone is most buzzing about is his back-to-back with Flume. For Diplo, his time spent on the Playa was a total recharge. In a social media share, he gets real about DJing and reflects on his Burning Man sets this year. My job is usually make songs that you hope people can dance to and to go out and play lot of sets every weekend. As you can imagine even that gets tiring. I’m guilty of getting lazy and keeping some of the same routine and playing same songs ...but at BM I get to play records for the first time bring back old records. Improvise… connect with old friends find new energy… do amazing back to back sets… find random art cars to pull up get lost in some lights and find songs I never heard before. Just creating a vibe w friends and random people riding bikes around you is some of the moments that make me feel like DJing is still one of the greatest jobs in the world. And I’m so lucky. Wow, the feels! Now, all we need are some uploads of those full sets, because we can only imagine the kind of magic he spun in there. The Martin Garrix Show is back in action! The first episode of the third season just hit the web and it’s an exciting one, as the producer shares his experience at Amsterdam Dance Event in 2017. It was last year at ADE when Garrix demonstrated how to make a festival-worthy track in just five minutes. The master producer showed off his creative process during the ADE Sound Lab Presents: Studio XL Martin Garrix as part of the world famous music conference. That was only the beginning. He also met with fans during a rare, pop up store appearance, and shared his own line of fashion-forward merch. And, he still found time to hit up STMPD RCRDS’s studios to prep for one of his biggest shows of the year. Alright, before we give away too much — just watch! Duke & Jones is the quickly rising duo from the UK that everyone should be paying attention to. With releases on Circus Records and Deadbeats already under their belt, they’ve already proven themselves to be a powerful new force in bass music. On their latest tune, they team up with THINKTVNK for a downright dirty trap/dubstep hybrid called “Fuse.” Much like its namesake, it takes a minute to warm up and reach the blast point, but once the fuse reaches its end, it’s all mayhem from there. Well, we had our suspicions — and now Ultra China Shanghai 2018 has finally and officially cancelled its event scheduled to go down this weekend. In a statement shared to the Weibo social media network, the Ultra China team says the event has been postponed “due to circumstances well beyond our control.” Although the message is entirely vague, at least hopeful festival goers now have some solid answers. To make up for it, Ultra China is throwing the “Ultra Shanghai Club Takeover” over the same weekend. (A very similar situation happened this past June with Ultra Beijing, which was also postponed and given an “Ultra Beijing Club Takeover” event.) The event series will feature performances from international talent at Shanghai’s “newest, hottest and most technologically advanced nightclubs.” Plus, there will be a Resistance showcase to salvage the feel of a true Ultra function. At the same time, the organization has unleashed the lineup for the debut edition of Ultra China Beijing, which takes place September 15 and 16 at the Beijing China NHC Base. Armin van Buuren, Axwell Λ Ingrosso, Steve Angello, DJ Snake, Zedd and more are set to throw down. See the full lineup here. Tickets purchased for Ultra China Shanghai will be automatically within the next week. More info below. See the original share here. Just a little less than two weeks ago, we got the first look at the tracklist for David Guetta’s upcoming seventh studio album, 7, and its impressive features list, which includes: Anne-Marie, Bebe Rexha, Black Coffee, Brooks, Delilah Montagu, Faouzia, G-Eazy, J.Balvin, Jason Derulo, Jess Glynne, Justin Bieber, Lil Uzi Vert, Madison Beer, Martin Garrix, Nicki Minaj, Saweetie, Sia, Stefflon Don, Steve Aoki and Willy William. However, this is only half the picture – these artists are only the publicly featured artists, there are still far more who were involved in the writing, production, engineering, and mastering of the album, including Afrojack, Poo Bear, Cesqeaux, Ina Wroldsen, Frank Dukes, and Throttle. Also found on two tracks on the album is Avicii. He’s featured as writer and producer on “She Knows How To Love Me” with Jess Glynne and Stefflon Don as well as “Let It Be Me” with Ava Max. 7 is set for release in 10 days, September 14. It’s unclear if we’ll get anymore singles before then, but now we have two more reasons to look forward to it. Listen to the latest single from the album with Black Coffee below. Eight months ago, Tom Swoon was the cause of a fatal traffic accident in which he was driving under the influence of alcohol; the passenger of the car he hit died, and the driver was sent to the hospital but eventually survived. Today in court, Tom Swoon, real name Dorian Tomasiak, was officially sentenced to four years, eight months in prison, as well as lifetime ban on driving a car, and a fine of 50 thousand PLN for the victims (approximately $13,500 USD). However, the prosecutor didn’t agree with the sentencing. As he argues, punishment is inadequate for the crime, requesting an additional 18 months in prison and an higher fine of 60,000 PLN (approx. $16,000 USD). Throughout the hearing, Tomasiak never denied causing the accident and was seen visibly weeping multiple times. “I don’t remember much that day. I remember that I was in my room, and then for a long time nothing, until the handcuffs were on my hands and I heard that I had killed a man,” he spoke with difficulty, breathing heavily. “Knowing that I’ve taken a person’s life is the greatest punishment that could have happened to me. I am not even able to ask for it, but I apologize to you wholeheartedly,” he said, addressing the driver who survived the crash. The court revealed their justification for the sentencing at the end of the trial, stating [translated from Polish], “The guilt of the accused was not in doubt, and the accused himself admitted to it. The court considered that the penalty of four years and eight months of imprisonment would be appropriate. The fault is unquestionable, but the court also took into account the other circumstances which were disclosed in this case. It is about these circumstances that reveal the way of life of the accused before committing a crime and his behavior after. There is no doubt that the accused was in a stable style before the crime. In addition, the accused in the court’s judgment honestly regrets the deed he has committed. For him it is also a great tragedy, though not as great as for the victims.” via ONET This article was first published on Your EDM. Generally speaking, EDM has never really been a genre centered around live performance (or at least, being able to replicate produced music in a live setting). While there is nothing inherently wrong with producers hitting the big stage and mixing on turntables, it can be rather difficult to appreciate their musical talent without some kind of instrumental performance taking place. In recent years, artists like Porter Robinson, Big Gigantic and The Glitch Mob have pushed the envelope by setting out on tours that largely focus on performance, shying away from the stereotypes that come with making electronic dance music. In their wake, numerous DJs (like San Holo, Ookay and Illenium) have incorporated live instruments into their sets, or have switched to live performances entirely. However, one particular EDM subgenre has managed to avoid this wave almost entirely: dubstep. Why exactly this wave has missed such a large subdivision of producers is beyond me. Maybe they prefer to invest more time into sound design? Perhaps dubstep fans simply don’t care. Either way, a brostep producer named Teminite has been catching a great deal of attention recently for his ability to combine his screaming leads and growling basses with rich, hyper-musical instrumentals. In celebration of his birthday, Teminite released a live music video for his song “State of Mind” last Friday, which showcases his rounded performing abilities. The video feels very familiar, as it certainly mimics elements of Haywyre’s numerous performance videos from years past. However, the “State of Mind” video feels equally – if not, even more – dynamic and even features a soulful alto sax solo. Check out the video below: Your EDM had the opportunity to sit down for a Q&A-style interview with Teminite about his forthcoming album Uprising, which is slated for a release on November 16th. Read the full interview below: First things first, let’s chat about your upcoming sophomore album Uprising. Would you consider it to be somewhat of a progression of your first album, or something entirely different? I feel like each album I do represents a period of time in my life. I started the Uprising album during a time when I was recovering from a low point, and finished it when that low point had completely passed, hence the title “Uprising.” My tracks “State of Mind” and “Standing Tall” mean the most to me, because they gave me so much joy whilst writing them, and are both based around positivity and motivation. I have never been able to express my emotions more than in those two tracks. The whole album is certainly my favorite thing I have created in my life so far. What exactly sparked your decision to release this album in two parts? In the last few years, I’ve battled with pressure I put on myself to release regularly. I used to feel very unproductive when I had gone more than four weeks without releasing anything. This year, I’ve managed to completely fix this by making the album and stretching out the release over the year, meaning I have a constant flow of releases. The reason why it is in two parts, is that I wanted to have a short break during the summer, to then enjoy the full release in autumn. A slew of different musicians came together to make this album what it is. Of the collaborations, which track are you most excited to be releasing? Most definitely “Monster.” The combination of working with Chime and PsoGnar in one track was great fun. We all met up in person in the UK to make the first part of the tune, and spent a long time discussing the potential directions we could go with it. It is a complete mash up of all three of our styles, incorporating both the heavy and melodic side, which is why I like it so much. I remember seeing something about you recording a talkbox solo for this album… Can you tell us more about that? Yeah, I’ve always been mesmerized by the sound of the talkbox ever since I first heard one. Last year I finally decided to get one whilst my track with Jonah Hitchens – “Standing Tall” – was in its final stages. I knew the track needed a solo at the end, and after jamming over the track using the talkbox, I knew it was meant to be. You can expect to see a lot more talkbox in my future tracks. Who are some up-and-comers in the dubstep world that you think deserve more recognition? There are currently four, I would say, that are not where they should be. Evilwave, who I collaborated with on “Rattlesnake”, and Said, who can be heard in our collab “Make Me” that will kick off chapter two of my album this September. The other two are L.M and Sekai. I really like their creative, melodic ideas. When it comes to your specific style, who are your biggest musical influences? Skrillex, Knife Party, Pegboard Nerds, Haywyre, Zomboy and Virtual Riot are some great examples of dubstep producers that influence my music a lot. I would like to also mention a band called Snarky Puppy, who create incredible music, and are inspiring me the most at the moment. If you could collaborate with any artist of your choice in the future, who would it be? It’s hard to choose, because I’m inspired by so many amazing artists. But I think it’d have to be Haywyre. His live performance videos inspire me so much. Other than the album, do you have any big surprises in store for 2018? I’ll have some more fun creating new things for you guys on my socials and YouTube! Depending on how the situation looks in the next months, I will try to make it to some venues to perform some shows and will do my very first trip to visit some friends in the U.S. So apart from being quite busy for the rest of this year, well… let’s just say I’ll update you from time to time. Lil Xan and Noah Cyrus began dating 32 days ago. Lil Xan is 21 and Noah Cyrus is 18. They are both massive rising stars in the entertainment world. Today, they broke up because they each thought the other was cheating on them. If you didn’t see this coming, sit down and we’ll get back to you in a second. While there is a so-called “straw that broke the camel’s back,” this rift in their relationship isn’t entirely new. It all apparently began when Cyrus sent Xan a photoshopped nude meme of Charlie Puth for no apparent reason. Somehow, Xan then assumed this meant Cyrus was cheating on him. In fact, Cyrus had the same idea about Xan, noticing during a Facetime that he had what appeared to be a hickey on his neck. Xan told her it was “just a bruise,” and she gave him the benefit of the doubt and ignored it, but obviously there was still a lingering thought in the back of her mind. Xan then responded on his own Instagram story that it wasn’t the Puth picture that made him suspicious of Cyrus, it was a picture of her “all over some other dude.” Remember that straw we mentioned earlier? Here’s the kicker: Noah Cyrus appeared as a special guest at Ookay’s show in Los Angeles this past Saturday, singing live for their collaboration together with Marshmello, “Chasing Colors.” This is obviously a situation of two collaborators and friends high on life enjoying their time together, but Xan saw it differently. (Also, shout out Nate Vogel for capturing this historic moment.) At time of publishing, Ookay has not commented on his involvement. This article was first published on Your EDM. Everyone makes mistakes; and it’s important when viewing those mistakes as a superior or client to be able to take context into account and act accordingly, and not as a bully. Artist Chris Dyer was recently commissioned by Bassnectar’s team to create a flyer for an upcoming New Year’s Eve show, and the artist shared the concept sketch on his Instagram Stories. The information about the show wasn’t public yet, and, without doing so intentionally, Dyer still ended up leaking the show. How Bassnectar responded shows a lot about his personality and how he responds to these situations. Rather than rolling with the punches (but still reprimanding or even firing Dyer as he may have deserved), he resorted to banal insults about Dyer’s work. Dyer later apologized for his actions, though ultimately the apology given was rather empty and directionless. “So if I’ve hurt somebody I considered a friend,” Dyer wrote, “I sincerely apologize.” Bassnectar, too, later set the record straight, admitting that he regretted his outburst, but challenging anyone in that situation to not act in a similar fashion. “Sorry to anyone who was disappointed to think that I’m not a human and I won’t react when someone screws us over,” Bassnectar wrote. Looking over these tweets, apologies, and exchanges, it’s easy to see how both sides could be condemned for the actions. Ultimately, Bassnectar’s NYE show will still go on and Dyer will continue to make art, and neither will be worse for wear. But hopefully this situation has offered lessons to them both that they can take into other areas of their lives. If you missed the comments he is referring too. When Phace’s new album Between hits tomorrow, September 5, the drum and bass world will once again feel the full force of Neosignal. Both Phace and his partner Misanthrop have been working on a set of singles this year. They’ve both done a lot of collabs and of course there’s been festival season to contend with, but the two Neosignal heads have been relatively quiet since Misanthrop’s Blurred EP released in October last year. Quiet until now, that is. Quite a few singles have been leaked from the 11-track epic Between, with two surprises premieres, including the massive “Congress,” right here and right now. Fans thus have been able to preview what’s to come and hopefully to observe the absolute madness of the pre-releases but truly nothing can prepare the DnB world for what is about to happen upon the drop of Between. Rough and raw yet to technically tight you can bounce a quarter off it, if this is what Phace calls a “transitional album,” he’s also about to transition the whole scene to another level. It’s that different, and it’s that good. Despite the mind-blowing technique and innovative sounds produced by Between, Phace was quite pensive and reflective when Your EDM sat down with him to discuss the album. Not just a transitional album for him but rather an expression of a concept he’d been kicking around for a while before starting work on the album, Phace wanted to explore the idea that being “between” in music or in life shouldn’t be seen as good or bad but as its own step on a journey and capable of producing great things of its own volition. That’s certainly true of this album, and he’s got a point about life too. Check out the exclusive last premiere of “Congress” and read about Phace’s epic journey or examining the space Between. There’s a lot of sounds on Between that many fans might not expect from a Phace release. Were there any new techniques you employed or were you really just focused on making something different all around? I did write this album in Ableton 10 while I was beta-testing the software 1 year before it was officially released to the public. So I did use quite a fair amount of new features available in the tool. After I released my last LP in 2015 I also got my studio room reconfigured in terms of acoustic treatment. This was a life changer. Since I worked on my last album, I of course also learned new production techniques on how I could translate and create my musical ideas even better and also make them sound better. I wanted ‘Between’ to be a clear progression towards my last LP, also more musical and a more diverse experience in terms of styles and emotions. With regard to making the album more musical, how did you achieve that but still make it sound modern and like a Phace album? The challenge for me was to sit down and spend more time with working on scales, harmonics and progressions, trying to get my head around that. I had focused on it in the years before but wanted to go down the rabbit hole deeper. I wanted to combine this with my vision on sound aesthetic and give it all a boost, to get that new edgy sound which I’m after. I also didn’t just want to write an album which is only a cluster of tunes but I wanted to write something that was fun and entertaining to listen to as a whole. It was definitely a surprise. From a compositional standpoint, it seems like you broke a lot of rules on this album, both with drum and bass and with music composition in general. Thank you, that is very good to hear and I hope others feel that way as well! What I like most about music is when something knocks you off your feet, shocks you or takes you by surprise. It may sound a little weird or unusual but as a piece of music it actually works and hopefully sticks out of the rest. That’s something I always wanted in my music because that’s what I like. When I went out as a young raver I always wanted to hear shit like I never heard before. That’s what I’m still trying to translate in my music. For this record I wasn’t after a specific sound in terms of genre or trend. I wasn’t trying to make a neurofunk album or anything you could attach to a genre or subgenre. I just wanted it to be a cool interesting piece of music that people would both enjoy listening to and want to dance to. I wanted it to be a reflection of my inspirations. I know sometimes my music can be crazy and unusual but that’s simply who I am as a musician. I don’t want you to always know what to expect. So how was that composing process in terms of working with those musical elements? Well, I was just sitting in front of my synthesizers and playing keys (laughs). I spent a good amount of time trying to understand harmonics and pushing my knowledge even further. I didn’t go into the detail of creating a score in my layouts of the songs. For me, my composition comes step by step. I come up with a theme or a chord progression and then from there write a solo and other surrounding elements. So with all those moving parts, how do you know when a track is done? When I can listen through it without having a moment where I feel like I have to stop and fix something. It’s kind of like I have this switch in my head and when the green light is on, I know it’s done. I don’t know, it’s just a feeling I have. Even though you might think you can enhance it and make it better, you’ve got to have this one point where you make a decision and say, “ok this is done.” For me I always try to make that decision once I’ve taken a bit of distance. I finish a track, take a week or two, listen back, maybe compare it to some of the other things I’m working on and then if nothing is really sticking out and I feel it all makes sense, then it’s done. It’s actually a tough question to answer, but when it comes down to it you should feel like you can just listen to it without jumping to fix it, and you can sit back and groove a little bit too (laughs). Going back to the theme of Between for the album, what did that mean to you in the grander scheme of your musical journey? (Laughs) I still haven’t really figured that out yet. I guess I would say it means I’m on a mission and when I’m on that mission sometimes it’s cool to be in between. It’s a sort of transitional album. There surely are a few classic “Phace” sounds in there, but for me more importantly there is a whole new world of Phace sound on the record, a direction where I’m heading towards. It’s still a transition but I also knew exactly what I wanted to do. I also wanted to get outside my comfort zone. The seed of most tracks on this album was planted outside of my home studio while I was touring and I really enjoyed that because it gave the album its own theme and sound. I was staying with my friend in New York for much of it and I think that really contributed to the vibe, just being in a different city and not knowing what was going to happen, I think that really influenced how it sounds. That’s also why I call it ‘Between’; in between places as well. Did you do the actual writing and production while on the road? I have a mobile studio setup that consists of an 11” laptop and a pair of noise cancelling headphones and it’s perfect for me to produce ideas anywhere I am. I can’t go that much in-depth using that system, but I like the limitations and it’s perfect to write quick layouts directly when emotions or ideas pop up. Sometimes it’s nice to limit yourself and the possibilities especially if you already have an idea because you have to be really creative in a different way in terms of how you get there. For this LP I did most of that early writing of musical ideas on my laptop and then went to the studio and produced the tracks out. How long were you working on the album? I had a couple of layouts in the end of 2016, and then 2017 I fully dedicated my year to it, so probably one and a half years in total. I wanted it to actually be out earlier at the start of this year but all the end parts took a while like the graphics and the finishing touches. Then I decided I wanted to master the album myself and that takes time to be objective about what you’re doing. In the end I was really happy I did that because I learned so much and all the effort I put into it made me much more confident about it. From the layouts to the writing and mixing and even the mastering, I did it all myself. That sounds really challenging. Do you have a lot of producer’s burnout now? It was hard work but I learned so much and I’m actually not burned out, I would say I’m energized. I don’t have any post-album depression, I’m still hyped! I don’t feel empty, my bucket is still half full and I’m still writing. I feel like I can keep on going. It’s really rare and different that you did your own mastering, and it also explains a lot about why the finished product has a different sort of polish on it. What were the challenges there and what did you learn? (Laughs) Well, the devil is in the details, especially in mastering. I didn’t want to compromise on the sound of the album, so I did take my time to learn how to translate it to all different kinds of media. I learned a lot in terms of how I listen to music now and the things I notice, especially in terms of distortion and low end. My music generally is mixed a little more upfront and a little louder than some other music. For this album I especially wanted to avoid uncontrolled distortion though. I wanted it all to be more controlled and next level. You have to be careful though; if you try to control everything you can easily start to sound too plastic or too synthetic. To me it’s important to keep the balance between a raw or untamed character but also to make sure it sounds state of the art and futuristic. How did you arrive at the album art and how it represents that theme of transition? One of my close friends is an Art Director and we always jam on ideas together, so when I was working on this album and it was about half done, I had the name and the concept in my head by then and asked him to work with me on visual ideas which were about something in between two situations. So we started brainstorming and came up with the idea of merging two independent puzzles to one. So it was like two situations being pieced together. It’s not one image and it’s not the other, but it’s something in between. I think it is a really nice symbol for the album. What shows are coming up for you where you’ll be playing the tracks from the album? I’m just starting to tour the album, like I had those shows in the United States (Bassrush Massive and a New York date in July) and I might be coming back to the States either in the start or middle of next year depending on how other stuff lines up. I think I’m going to go to Australia and New Zealand in the winter too. Right now I’m focusing on Europe obviously so I’ll be touring heavily around the EU until the end of the year. Of course you’re probably quite focused on the album release at the moment, but do you have any other releases in the works that you can discuss? I am working on new things already, nothing is fully finalized at the moment but I do have collaboration with Noisia that will be coming out after summer. So first I’m focusing on the album and then I’m going to sit down and we’re going to make some plans for the next releases on both Neosignal and NËU. Between is out tomorrow, September 5 on Neosignal. Click here for pre-order on multiple platforms. With this release Phace is doing a limited edition deluxe bundle which includes a limited edition vinyl, CD and stickers on addition to the digital download, so click the Neosignal link here to see those options. The surviving members of Nirvana reunited on stage to perform one of Kurt Cobain‘s favorite songs — “Molly’s Lips,” made popular by The Vaselines. The rare moment went down during the Foo Fighters‘ tour stop in Seattle over the weekend, and rock fans are still buzzing about it. The track, previously covered on Nirvana’s 1992 album Incesticide, proved to be the perfect song choice for the special moment. Former Nirvana member Krist Novoselic‘s band Giants in the Trees opened up the evening — and later on he joined the other living bandmates, Dave Grohl, Pat Smear, and the rest of the Foo Fighters to perform the classic track. “This is an old song, we haven’t done this song together in a long time,” Grohl led into the cover. Krist Novoselic last performed with the Foo Fighters in 2017. Watch below and let that nostalgia take over! Electric Zoo‘s 10th anniversary was most definitely wild — and that energy carried over into the night as ravers took their afterparty to a New York train station. The Snapchat video below shows the “EZoo Subway Dance Party” in action, and according to r/EDM, that excitement continued for about 20 minutes. Onlookers say there were “at least 200 people” in this packed area and probably 600 to 700 more “on the platform going crazy.” If we want to be technical, another commenter points out that this actually took place at the Harlem 125th Street train station, not a subway stop. But, it was still hype nonetheless. All weekend long, Electric Zoo 2018 saw amazing sets from Martin Garrix, Virtual Self, Kaskade, Tiesto, Alesso, Jauz, San Holo, Rezz, and so many more. No wonder these people were so rowdy leaving the festival. This is honestly just as hype if not more than any official after party we’ve seen! NYC clearly knows how to rage! Just watch. You’d be hard pressed to find a Skrillex fan that didn’t know the OWSLA-founder was in Black Rock City this past week attending Burning Man. The gathering is nothing new for the young producer, whether as a plain attendee or musicians during his stay. In a unique situation this year, Skrillex went back-to-back with Tokimonsta at Camp Questionmark. We’re not sure who joined whose set, as the two played one right after the other on the night of Wednesday, August 29, but fans clearly saw a once-in-a-lifetime pairing. Many fans began rumors that Skrillex would drop new music this week after captioning a photo at Burning Man, “I’ll be back next week.” Rather than the quite searingly obvious meaning that he’d simply just be coming home, some interpreted the state of coming “back” to be in his music. While we still have the rest of the week, we don’t believe those fans will get their wish. This article was first published on Your EDM. Today is the last official day of Burning Man, even though thousands still linger on the playa. Over the past 10 days, tens of thousands of people swarmed to Black Rock City to create a temporary cityscape and escape from the real cities. Police and federal officials were also present at the event throughout its duration, leading to the arrest of 43 individuals this year. Compared to last year’s 58, this year showed an improvement. The reasons for most of the arrests remain to be drug possession and trafficking of drugs. “People are still leaving the playa and recovering from a week of partying,” Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen said about the likelihood of more arrests into the coming week. “They are trying to orient themselves and coming to terms with reality.” via Reno Gazette This article was first published on Your EDM.
