Which shit? Young DJs or sensationalist journalism?

“I just like to make people dance” is what you hear a lot of from today’s DJs, which is why is shouldn’t come as a surprise that the world’s youngest DJ, Dextrous One, also utters them. Brandon Duke (Dextrous One), a 9-year-old DJ/elementary school student out of Toronto, Ontario, has been trying to emulate and immitate different DJ mannerisms by using household items and turning them into his own DJ setup. Brandon’s DJ instructor, Francis Felice, says Dextrous One is a natural and that he is probably better than a lot of adult DJs he has come in contact with. Dextrous One wears a shirt that says “@6” during live shows because when he was only 6 years old, he performed at Toronto’s Kool Haus, a feat that has been acknowledged by the Guinness Book of World Records as the ‘World’s Youngest DJ’. That was a memory his father will never forget, as he described his experience watching his son as, “…incredible just to see a six-year-old child in front of thousands of people that he’s never met before,” said Ryan, adding his son has the ability to “just command the crowd.” When asked about why he wants to make DJing a career, Brandon said it’s a good way to “make money”, but more importantly, he wants to pass down what he has learned to the next generation of DJs. Yes, he is 9 years old and already thinking about passing his skills down. We wonder what 3-year-old DJ Arch Junior from South Africa would have to say about this. Check out Dextrous One performing his own rendition of Canada’s National Anthem on turntables below! Source

Apple reportedly to ditch headphone jack for wireless listening on iPhone 7
Cupe replied to Cupe's topic in DJ Headquarters
wat Apple posted quarterly revenue (for Q4 last year) of $51.5 billion and quarterly net profit of $11.1 billion. This compares to revenue of $49.6 billion and profit of $10.7 billion last quarter, and $42.123 billion in revenue in the year ago quarter. And changing an input again (in this case the jack) means every single person that gets one now has to buy new headphones. Just like how the did with the charger input that rendered every charger and dock useless. -
It’s no secret that modern EDM is constantly criticized as being “not real music.” From our near abandonment of live instruments and strict focus on percussion and over the top vocal samples, the older schools of music often degrade our top producers and label them as harmful towards the traditional music model. As fans of the genre, we’re often forced into the conversation, having to explain why even the most extreme tracks are complex and stylistic pieces of art. Several months ago, Youtube user BloodyFanGirl decided she’d had enough of the “music puritans” putting down electronic artists like Skrillex. In response, she created a personal compilation of video clips beginning in Sonny’s pre-Skrillex days. From his time with From First To Last to his most recent collaborations with Diplo, BloodyFanGirl included nearly every clip of him we’ve seen playing some sort of musical instrument. The guitar, piano, kazoo and his own voice are all used to prove his true worth as a musician and creator. Read BloodyFanGirl’s description below and watch her video further down. I made a video you can send to people who say “Skrillex isn’t a musician”, in the hopes of creating a new beautiful world where music puritans finally shut up about some artists not being “real musicians” or some genres not being “real music”. We’re getting real tired of your fundamentalist bullshit! Source

The iPhone rumor mill is buzzing with reports that Apple will be nixing the standard 3.5mm headphone jack for their next product. The iPhone 7 will supposedly rely on wireless connections in order to accommodate a thinner model that has more internal space for new features. The 3.5mm jack has been around for hundreds of years, though headphones with Lightning ports have recently surfaced, but with a heftier price tag. If the reports are true, Apple is making a bold, and perhaps risky move by ditching headphone compatibility for the iPhone 7. Before Christmas, the Apple community spurred a huge controversy as Macotakara claimed that the iPhone 7 will ditch the 3.5 mm standard headphone port completely, to enable further thinness and internal space savings for other components. The 3.5mm jack is a hundred-year old technology based on analogue signals, so although it is ripe for replacement, almost all headphones sold today rely on the 3.5mm jack. Cutting the port for the iPhone 7 could be a painful transition. Today, the Chinese media has posted further news confirming the original story, claiming that Apple will drop the next-gen iPhone’s 3.5mm headphone jack in favour of wireless headphone standards and Lightning. Chinese site Anzhou says that supply chain sources have confirmed the removal of the 3.5mm port on iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus and Apple will instead focus on wireless headphones to output sound. The site claims Apple will make wireless equivalent of Apple’s ‘EarPod’ headphones. Feng notes that Lightning headphones will be the wired alternative option, but Apple ‘expects’ most people to move to wireless particularly if Apple starts bundling wireless EarPods with the iPhone 7 as suggested. It’s worth noting that Apple did make a wireless headset for the original iPhone, but it was a pricey optional add on. Today, the company produces all kinds of headphones (3.5mm, Lightning and wireless) through the Beats subsidiary. Although headphones with Lightning ports do exist on the market today, they are a niche market and often expensive, and it’s unclear if the ecosystem will be able to catch up in time for the iPhone 7 launch. Part of the reason the 3.5 mm port is ubiquitous because it is a cheap, simple port and an industry open standard. This is another concern if Apple preaches its proprietary Lightning connector as the new ‘wired’ alternative, which has licensing fees. The iPhone 7 (or whatever it is actually called) is expected to be released in the fall with major external and internal changes, potentially including larger batteries and a 256 GB storage option. Do you think Apple should abandon the 3.5 mm jack? It’s been a few weeks since the initial rumor so we are interested in hearing your follow-up feelings in the poll and comments section.

As expected, Martin Garrix has released a statement of his own in response to the statement recently given by Spinnin’ Records. The label argues that it should be compensated for income that they would have otherwise generated under the terms of the old contract between the two parties. Their previous agreement would allow MusicAllStars to continue managing him until July 1, 2017 as well as give Spinnin’ Records the exclusive right to release Martin Garrix music until that date. On the other hand, Garrix stated that their arguments were “one sided” and “incorrect in some respects.” He says that the court is currently deciding whether or not to honor the terms that would immediately end all contracts made between Garrix, Spinnin’, and MAS. In addition, Martin Garrix argues that it is he who should be compensated, and not his previous managers. On a lighter note, the young DJ wishes his fans a happy new year and adds that he feels freer than ever now that he has control of his own music. Read the full statement below for a complete understanding of what Garrix wanted everyone to understand. Dear all, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fans for their support and I wish everyone 2016 full of love and great music! With reference to the statement that Spinnin’ Records’ issued a couple of days ago regarding my termination of the management agreement with MAS and my artist agreement with Spinnin’, I feel the urge to set the record straight on a number of things that are stated. Spinnin’s statement is – to say the least – one sided and in any case incorrect in some respects. Don’t be misled: further legal proceedings are initiated by me, not Spinnin’ or MAS, and the main object of those proceedings is to ask the court to confirm that I have rightfully terminated and nullified my agreements with Spinnin and MAS. If the court follows me in this it will be Spinnin and MAS who will have to compensate me and not as they now suggest the other way around. My lawyers have issued a writ on 23 December 2015 and will release a more detailed statement in a few weeks setting out the details of the proceedings and the grounds for the nullification of the agreements with Spinnin and MAS. For now, I only want to have said that Spinnin’ and MAS’ statement confirms yet again that it was absolutely the right decision for me to end my relationship with them. I really feel freed and relieved that I am as of now the rightful owner of all my music and that I can release it when, where and with whoever I want. After getting back my music ownership rights under the pressure of the summary proceedings I have granted Spinnin’ a 7 year license on music previously released by Spinnin’, with revised conditions in my favour. This 7 year license is nothing more than a manner to safeguard – without litigation – the availability to all of you of my existing music and the music made by me in collaboration with other artists signed by Spinnin’. I have a great team supporting me as always and with whom I can start the new year full of trust and confidence, with more new releases for all my fans and supporters. -Martin Garrix Source

London producer Four Tet will be taking over the Opera House in Sydney tomorrow evening to perform his highly anticipated new live show. Hebden has collaborated with UK installation artists SquidSoup to create an interactive 3D light installation to pair with his vibrant musical performance. In light of this, we decided to go back through some of our favourite originals and remixes he has produced over the years, as well as a breathtaking 'Beat This' production challenge he conquered back in early 2014. We hope you enjoy it. Tickets for his Opera House performance are still available here. Source

For the first time in 30 years, vinyl production capacity is on the up. Jack White’s new Third Man pressing plant in Detroit will be kitted out with eight brand new presses, when it opens doors in Spring 2016. Built by German start-up Newbilt Machinery, the new presses update the existing workhorses with new features like an electronic control system and a hydraulic power supply to squeeze the molds made by Record Products of America (RPA). The company claims that material and energy loss during stand-by times will improve although the multi-step, labour-intensive process that goes into pressing a record won’t actually change. “We haven’t invented anything new. We’re just making old manual pressing machines with new parts,” RPA technical sales manger Dan Hemperly told Plastic News. Newbilt’s double system featuring two presses and an extruder, hydraulic power supply and a trimming machine costs $161,250 while a single-press system will set you back $100,000. The company added that it hopes to develop a method of automating the machines in the not too distant future. With old machinery proving rarer than hen’s teeth, tales of serendipitous entrepreneurs stumbling upon record presses in abandoned warehouses have taken on near-mythical status. Independent Record Pressing in N.J. reportedly bought six used presses for $1.5 million and paid $5,000 to make and replace an obsolete screw on a press. Difficulties in press capacity is creating one of several bottlenecks in the chain, contributing to distressing lead times and an anti-majors sentiment. “It’s a world wide epidemic. You can’t get a record made quickly,” Hemperly said. “That’s why there’s so much interest in getting vinyl pressing machines. It’s a good time to be in the business of making those machines and making vinyl records.” In September, Newbilt invited guests to experience the very first new vinyl presses in almost three decades. “I can’t tell you exactly where those presses are going because the customers want to keep it confidential until they open their doors. Detroit was hush-hush until now,” Hemperly added. White opened a Third Man record store and retail area in Detroit a few weeks ago. Only last week was it revealed that within that space, a 10,000 square-foot plant will start pressing records in the new year. Via a viewing window, the entire pressing operation will be on showcase to the public. Source

Twitter has expanded beyond the confines of Social Media, using its status as one of the US’s leading tech companies to launch Twitter Venture. Until now, the offshoot has concerned itself primarily with other companies related to the tech field, such as beacon marketing or Android alternatives. Now, as they realize the significance of music to their revenue, the company has set its first sights in the industry on a headphone startup called Muzik. Muzik headphones are meant to serve as high-end competitors to brands such as Beats’ headphones. Set at $299 retail value with an in-ear version for $199 to be released at a later date, the wireless headset comes with an added feature of being able to share song clips of what you’re listening to on social media. Listeners are also able to control which songs they’re playing via buttons on the side of the ears. Ultimately, the investment represents Twitter’s recognition of the increasing role music plays in their service. It’s the most talked about topic among users, while some of Twitter’s most elite members are musicians. Therefore, capitalizing on the industry is a stable investment to make as it continues its goals of expanding into other areas of business. In exchange for the investment and Twitter’s integration into the headphones, Muzik will also get to show off some of its products at Twitter’s CES display coming up shortly in Las Vegas. Crosley Cruiser turntable ^ Follow last week's news that turntables were Amazon's highest selling audio product this Christmas and September's revelation that vinyl sales are outperforming streaming services, still more data on the medium's resurgence is pouring forth. British retail chain HMV, the country's biggest music retailer, apparently sold a turntable a minute in the week leading up to Christmas, reports The Vinyl Factory. "Entertainment products form a major part of the Christmas shopping list," said Ian Topping, chief executive of HMV. "The gift of the year in 2015, though, has to be a turntable as we see a huge resurgence in the sales of vinyl." Back in December, a new study produced on behalf of the UK labels body BPI and the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) found that 19% of listeners said subscription streaming services lead to higher numbers of vinyl purchases.
