The annual Your Shot competition gives thousands of amateur DJs around Australia the chance to rise above and make their mark. Last year saw over 4000 contestants, with Popcorn Thieves taking to the winners podium.

The Greenwood Hotel hosts this years Your Shot Competition Registration day on the 18th of June for New South Wales amateur DJ’s.

Your Shot chooses 72 contestants from the thousands of entries in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. Those 72 then go through a 6 week DJ training course by DJ Warehouse. Each contestant then performs their set live for the judges and eager crowd. The winner of the 2013 competition in each state lands their place in the Stereosonic festival respectively. The overall winner then goes on to play their international set in Croatia, Mykonos or Tokyo. On top of that they’ll land a bounty of gear from competition sponsors Skullcandy, Pioneer and Boost Mobile gear.

Matty Whells, who registered for the competition, speaks highly of the opportunity it provides. “The Your Shot competition brings together a lot of like minded individuals who all have a passion for music and provides them with a once in a lifetime opportunity to achieve their dreams.”

Last years competition winners Step Brothers (Joseph Richter, Tyson No-syt and Keet Thong) have nothing but praise for the competition. Meeting in high school, they moved on to DJ’ing house parties as a trio. On a whim, they entered the Your Shot competition and ultimately came through as the national winners. “Your Shot has definitely made us better DJs,” Joseph commented. “A life changing experience.” He added that during the competition there is plenty of support. “..there is no pressure leading up to the performance after the six weeks of training. A lot of encouragement and willing help is at hand.” Joseph also said that even if you don’t win the competition, the experience and chance of stardom are still in the works. “There’s nothing to lose and everything to gain. You might not win Your Shot [but] there are club owners looking for new aspiring DJs.

Alex Nikko, who also attended the registration day in Sydney, said “[the Your Shot competition] gives you the opportunity to show yourself and what you bring to the table.” When asked what he would say to those thinking of entering: “Go for it! You never know what the outcome will be—anything’s possible.” Alex was skilled enough to blitz the interview and be picked to move on to the competition stage in August.
