A recent spiel on the Huffington post has blown sh*t up on sexism in EDM.

Written by Sara Gates, the article features Krewella, a trio comprised of the Yousef sisters, Cassy, Brazzabelle and Jack (aka. Jaqueline) Novak, whom changed her name for what can only be assumed as business purposes.

An in depth look at what female DJs face in the industry, the article gives a pretty bleak outlook regarding the concept that female’s can’t produce their own beats.

It’s a good one, and worth a read for sure, but we’re slightly concerned about the structure of the article. Gates still opens the piece with what the Yousef sisters are wearing (tank top, harem pants and a skirt if you’re interested), which gives the whole thing a bit of a Woman’s Day vibe.

She also puts a sub heading ‘Learning to Produce’ which is a bit off. We would have liked something a bit more neutral to introduce some talented ladies to the industry.

All these stories that come out of America these days due to the uprising of dance music is like looking into the past.

This is the kind of attitudes and stories you'd hear in the UK/Europe in the late 90's/early 00's.

Not so much, if at all, these days.

Mad love for female DJ's...

Cassy

Steffi

Magda

Margaret Dygas

Mayan Nidam

Tania Vulcano

Ellen Allien

Maya Jane Coles (Productions yes, DJ'ing I find rather boring tbh)

DJ Heather

Nina Kraviz

Anja Schneider

Prob missed a few but you get the point...

yeah it's pretty bad in aus. I know so seriously good female djs and it seems a lot of the time that if they don't have a modelling career they wont get booked. It is getting better though due to all the legit females rocking it.

i remember hearing nina las vegas rip into some chick before her BDO set who tried to go on about how its hard for new females in the industry. Nina replyed pretty much with its fucking hard for anyone new in the industry.

Ive seen a few circulars for female dj's having a go at other female dj's for seemingly 'jumping the queue' with respect to booking gigs because they are willing to take their clothes off.

my opinion here is that if they want to do that sort of promo work, let em have it. they'll never get booked by any serious music heads until they do something of substance. and if thats the case then they are simply fulfilling a job not a vocation.

some people need to learn the difference

with the net these days a good track is a good track. when you are scrolling through soundcloud or beatport 9/10 when you see a name you couldnt know if its a man women or a dog.

i think the reign of pseudo sexism is coming to an end because people are starting to realise that they sound like idiots evertime they argue its 'its hard for young kids with women shakin' their tits' or its 'hard for women in an industry dominated by males' both arguements are stupid. if your making good sounds and you give ANY FUCKING THOUGHT to your marketing strategy, hell buy a publicist a beer and just chat. i know i have and learnt a fuckload. while breakin' it is going to be hard having a strategy a plan to proceed forward, a list of goals broken into small steps is going to get you alot further in your desire to be taken seriously than shakin' that ass on the 6pm news.

Sex sells. The world needs DJs (for at least a while longer).

A hot girl with big tits that flaunts them will land better jobs than a better DJ who doesn't have tits.

Open your eyes, this is how it works.

Just take a look at some of the 'talented female DJs' on your facebook lists and see how many more 'likes' their pages have than DJ mates you KNOW are good.

Open your eyes, this is how it works.

Not in the underground scene where it matters.

Matters to whom?

people who care more about the music than a set of tits.

People who like music and not the music 'industry' then?

Quickly becoming a minority.
