  1. It was only two weeks ago that the Miami City Commission voted not to renew Ultra Music Festival’s contract at Bayfront Park (which the festival still aims to appeal), and it seems like the flood gates have opened. In a preliminary vote this morning, the same commission unanimously agreed to limit all outside events at Bayfront Park. What does that mean exactly? In years past, Bayfront Park would be closed to the public for somewhere around 100 days, during events, preparation, and tear-down. Now, according to Miami Herald, the city wants to “reserve the park for the general public for 85 percent of the year. In the remaining 55 days of the year, the park could host private events, though any prep time will also count.” If this ordinance eventually passes, it would not necessarily completely ruin Ultra’s chances of returning to the park, but it would vastly diminish them as a considerable amount of that 55 days would be used for the festival (and not other events). Like the meeting two weeks ago, members of the community were invited to attend and voice their opinions. Amal Kabbani, president of the Miami Downtown Neighbors Alliance, said, “It was impossible to sleep. The vibration was really nasty, down to having dishes shake in our apartment.” Ultra ceases music at midnight on Friday and Saturday, and at 11pm on Sunday. Other residents, who may not even like Ultra, voiced their concern that the city may be setting too wide a precedent. Dan Phalen, 29, who lives about 1,500 feet from Bayfront Park, said, “I don’t think just because you dislike something that you should stop it.” He added, “You could have the same argument for Memorial Day weekend on South Beach.” Ultimately, this decision will be made at a future meeting, but with unanimous support from the council, it seems Bayfront Park’s fate, and the events held within it, may already be sealed. 2. Dillon Francis is the undisputed class clown of dance music, so a post like this really doesn’t phase us very much. “10k RT’s i’ll wax ZEDD into my chest,” he captioned this photo. 10k RT’s i’ll wax ZEDD into my chest pic.twitter.com/xKQsbdLPNz — Dillon Francis (@DILLONFRANCIS) October 9, 2018 At time of writing, the photo has passed the necessary threshold (and is in fact well beyond it now) and Dillon – a man of his word – has agreed to his own conditions. 3. Dutch tastemaker and producer ZES is appealing to a new generation of listeners by creating musically diverse and vibrant sounds that appeals to fans across the spectrum. In the past 4 years, ZES has catapulted himself in the Soundcloud community and accumulated millions of streams thanks to his dedication and unique identity in the electronic world with tracks like ‘Do It Again’ and ‘The Final Decay.’ New single ‘Set Mind,’ taken from his highly anticipated upcoming LP, sees him come together with independent record label and YouTube channel CloudKid. ZES sat down with us ahead of the release – sharing his past, present and future endeavors. Take a moment and get familiar with this talented artist! It’s been a while since your first release ‘Hindsight’ back in 2014, tell us a little about the journey you’ve come on? ‘Hindsight’ was definitely one of the first big releases to see the light of day, however before that came ‘Love Will Take,’ my first ever collection of tracks on Fog Mountain. Now that I have completed my first true feature length album it feels like I have truly entered a new stage of my musical being. The past few years have been a true emotional rollercoaster and in all honesty I enjoy looking back on it. Emotionally unsure or fragile times prove to be great inspiration for me and my music and I cherish both the good and bad times. In the time between ‘Hindsight’ I have released another collection of tracks, ‘Darkened,’ which was a big step into the experimental dark side of myself. Since that release I have been finishing up my master studies in Industrial Design, as well as made a lot of new music to try and find a new sound that aligned with myself. Over the last few years since the release of ‘Hindsight,’ do you feel your sound has evolved? I have always been a very instrumental artist in terms of musical structures and emotional elements in my songs, for a lot of the new stuff it feels more infused with emotions also in a vocal sense. It feels to me like I have only just entered a new realm in which I can both create emotional compositions as well as lyrics and vocals to create even more atmosphere. It feels amazing to be confident enough to sing on a lot of my own work now as well. You’re back with a new single. What does ‘Set Mind’ mean to you? Is there any story behind the title? ‘Set Mind’ is a song that I wrote going through an emotionally intense time. It revolves around the presence of an unstable form of love and doubts about what to do about it. What I express in the song is a feeling of desperation and vulnerability as well as a feeling of confidence and stability. These two opposite emotional mindsets create a sense of tension that I tried to embody within the song. Peaceful, yet also painful. Beautiful, yet also coarse. How did you come to work with CloudKid on this release? I sent out the single and album tracks to a select few labels and CloudKid were feeling it. I knew them from when they uploaded a few of my older tracks to their channel and really like the way they work. You’ve worked with a lot of different artists on your releases. How is the process different when collaborating versus a solo piece? There’s a very interesting aspect of working with someone else. To me it feels like making music turns from a monologue into a dialogue you have with another artistic and emotional being. For me it has been a great pleasure to hear what other people feel when they hear my instrumental productions and receiving vocals is always an honor for me. Being in the same room with a vocalist and working on a song together is still quite new to me but I feel that it brings a whole new type of energy into the studio that I grew addicted to. What three words would you use to describe your sound to someone who’s never heard your music before? Melancholic, unpredictable, fragile. What environment do you like to produce in best? I love working in an environment that has no limits and no rules. Within my home studio I have tried to make a comfortable place that suits that. Creativity for me is something that cannot be forced at most times. However I found ways for myself to stimulate exploration through using a lot of hands-on analog gear, which works great for exploring new boundaries. What are some of the most important lessons you’ve learned since you started making music? What have been some of the challenges so far? I’ve learnt a lot of lessons through making music, most of them are lessons about who I am as a person and why I make music the way I do. But there’s also a lot that I feel I don’t understand yet about the value of music in the world and the universe. The feeling of energy that I get from making music and the feeling you get when you get a vibe going with other artists is still a mysterious and unfathomable thing. The challenges in music for me lie mainly in gaining the confidence to make certain decisions, for instance to start singing on my own tracks, and to not make any compromises in my creative process. However on the opposite site of that I am certain that if you put positive energy into something, it will have a positive effect. I feel quite confident that I am in a place now where I make music that is closer to who I am then ever before. What’s next for ZES? One of the main things is releasing my upcoming album. It’s a super exciting time for me to get my new music out for people to hear. Talking about the dialogue in music creation earlier, I also think that a part of releasing new music into the world creates a feeling of dialogue with your audience. And for me that is both an exciting as well as a scary thing to do because the new music is so personal. Next to that I am preparing a new live show that I will be performing when the album drops. 4. Staygold is a fairly new duo, having only released a couple of originals and a remix up to this point. But that being said, they’ve already shown the depth of their sound and have piqued our interest enough for us to premiere their Phase 2 EP out today. Phase 2 contains two songs, the lyrically powerful and ethereal “Snow Girl,” and the jazz-influenced, whimsical “All I Do.” The two share a loose rhythm together while still pushing forth vastly different tones and sounds. “’All I Do’ and ‘Snow Girl’ are some of our favorite songs we’ve ever made. When we were writing ‘Snow Girl’ with Avena & Danny, the whole idea came to us so seamlessly because it felt like something we could all relate to.” – Staygold Check out Phase 2 below! 5. Mega collaboration “First Time” between Seven Lions, SLANDER & Dabin featuring Dylan Matthew is “officially” out today, and fans are already going crazy for it. Seven Lions and SLANDER are already stars in their own respective rights, and Dabin is quickly rising, preparing to release his second album later this year. Dylan Matthew, as well, is no stranger to dance music, having previously collaborated with Rome In Silver and Gammer. Their song “First Time” takes elements from each artist and, rather than putting them in a metaphorical blender á la a smoothie, it’s more like each ingredient has been whipped up and mixed carefully and then baked, like a decadent dessert. The beautiful melody, the euphoric vocals, all of the recognizable Seven Lions synths and licks from Dabin on guitar, SLANDER’s own version of heaven trap… it’s all beautifully there and insanely delicious. 6. Toronto’s mysterious producer, 10Digits finally drops his long awaited album, ‘Rebirth’. This will be performed live for the first time on First Play Live on CBC television. This rising start has already been nominated for Bell Media Future Music Star and Kiss Radio’s, ‘One To Watch’ seriously catching the attention of all onlookers in electronic and pop scene. What can you expect with 10Digits album? This album stands testament to 10Digits ability to flexibly adapt his style. Demonstrating disco groove on tracks such as, ‘Something Crazy’, urban, driving anthemic feels on ‘Feeling’ and future bass and modern, electronic pop sound on collaboration with Holly Winter, ‘Money’. Focal points on this well rounded album are: collaborations with artists such as 5-time Juno Award winner Simone Denny, American Idol finalist Joshua Ledet and feature with Hip-Hop star, ShaqIsDope. 10Digits’ work ethic and unique, melodic, and eclectic style are certainly taking him to the top and we are proud to present this latest collection of work on ‘Rebirth’. 7. South African, GoodLuck and their feel-good production and the goosebump driving toplines from the group’s singer Juliet Harding have always been favourites for our new release radar. Today, they drop their latest lyrically and melodically uplifting tune entitled, ‘Chasing Dreams’ features soulful vocals, euphoric plucked synths and a clear message of love and positive motivation. Upon speaking about the creative process vocalist Harding comments: “When I wrote ‘Chasing Dreams’, I had this overwhelming feeling, one that we needed to share with the world. At the time, it felt like everything was working against me, and trying to stay positive and motivated was becoming harder and harder. There was a person who came into my life who really helped me see that freedom was the only thing I actually needed and that everything else was a choice. I also realised that true freedom was found in the journey and I really wanted to share this message with our fans. No matter how difficult the circumstances are, you always have a choice to keep following your dreams with an open heart and love in your bones. That’s the story of ‘Chasing Dreams’” It’s an incredible achievement to gather all the ideas and concepts of three talented musicians to develop a finished musical product and we are thrilled to share, ‘Chasing Dreams’ with you. Take a listen to this motivational anthem for any person currently chasing their dreams. This article was first published on Your EDM. 8. While Your EDM loves Noisia and their family of labels (Vision, Invisible and Division), the Ukranian neurofunk juggernaut and Noisia Radio favorite known as Nickbee has been criminally under-reported in the U.S.. As far as we’re concerned. While Nickbee has released a huge number of singles both solo and as part of compilations this year on labels like Axon and Vandal, he’s returned to Invisible for his first solo EP on the Invisible imprint since 2016. As its title denotes, Arkaim I is the first in a three-part series which is very good news for neuro and hard drum and bass fans because we truly all need Nickbee’s unique mashup of OG neurofunk beats and pitch perfect, innovative sound design in our lives. The EP drops today but as of this article being published, Your EDM is the only place to get a full track preview of this neuro madness in the form of the single “Out of Universe.” We also have the buy link, so listen and scroll, neuro nuts. Listen and scroll. One of the things that really stands out on Nickbee’s sophomore Invisible EP is, interestingly, the melodies. That’s not a common thing in the neurofunk world. “Out of Universe” is a great example, and it’s also unique among the other tracks on the EP. With a bit of a rolling beat which mirrors early, neurofunk, it also has a double bassline which both runs with the drums and picks up the synth melody, harmonizing with it. It’s extremely complex and plays like a composed score, with the tight-as-its-own-drums sound design comprising the cherry on top. There definitely seems to be a musical theme throughout Arkaim I, with a heavy focus on the interplay between beat, bassline and melody as well as a sort of depth and ambient-style sound design not often seen in neurofunk nowadays. It’s a wonderful marriage and an interesting study in how different types of music can go together and by doing so, reinvent themselves. Leave it to Nickbee to get us thinking on such deep levels with tracks that are also dancefloor-friendly. Surely even more awaits with the second and third installments. Stay tuned. 9. The last two years have been dense with releases from Gorillaz, dropping Humanz in April 2017 and The Now Now in June 2018. With all of the touring associated with the albums, especially in such a tight timeframe, frontman Damon Albarn feels like the group needs to space out any future tours. When asked how quickly the Gorillaz will return after their current tour ends, Albarn replied: “Well, we’re going to have to even it out. Since there wasn’t much time between these recent two records it’s probably going to be another 10 years.” Despite the news about touring, Albarn has already teased another new Gorillaz album back in August, telling Austrian radio station Radio FM4, “I have another one [Gorillaz record] as well, but I know I’m not gonna be allowed to even think about recording or putting it out this year […] I don’t know. It’s there. If I get the time, or if anyone wants it, it’s there.” via NME This article was first published on Your EDM. Source: Gorillaz Warn Of A Ten Year Break Until Their Next Tour Source
  10. Samsung is upping its smartphone game with the much-anticipated Galaxy A9. As gadget-lovers patiently await the official release, the tech company is keeping the hype alive. The most interesting feature is undoubtedly the Samsung Galaxy A9’s quadruple camera. Each comes fully equipped with a different use: an 8-megapixel ultra-wide lens with Scene Optimizer, a 10-megapixel telephoto lens, a 24-megapixel main lens and a 5-megapixel depth lens. There’s a shot for every situation. In addition, the Samsung Galaxy A9 is set to compete directly with Apple’s iPhone series with Face ID and a fingerprint scanner on the back of the device. Mobile payments and expandable storage up to 512 GB are just a couple more ways Samsung is giving Apple a run for its money. “As a global leader in smartphone innovation, we understand the demand for meaningful innovation in a fast-paced world driven by visual communication,” an announcement from the company states. “We’re excited to deliver on this promise and debut world-leading smartphone camera technology with the Galaxy A9.” You know what they say… four cameras are better than one. Maybe they don’t say that, but that feature in particular is seriously next level. Look out for more information on the Samsung Galaxy A9 launch this November. 11. The Music Modernization Act (MMA) is officially law. Last month, the bill widely backed by musicians, songwriters, producers and labels passed through the US Senate by unanimous vote. Today, President Donald Trump signed the MMA into law. The MMA edits Section 115 of the U.S. Copyright Act, bringing music law up to speed with the modern streaming era. Moving forward it will be easier for rights holders to get paid for their work in music. There are three important parts of the U.S. Copyright Act: The Compensating Legacy Artists for their Songs, Service, & Important Contributions to Society (CLASSICS) Act, The Allocation for Music Producers (AMP) Act, and the MMA. Under the new law, it will be easier for artists and songwriters to receive royalty payouts from music recorded prior to 1972. It will also ensure songwriters are paid for streaming services in a more efficient manner. The MMA will also provide a consistent process for musicians to obtain unclaimed royalties. Recording Industry Association of America president Mitch Glazier released a statement following this huge step in music history: “The Music Modernization Act is now the law of the land, and thousands of songwriters and artists are better for it. The result is a music market better founded on fair competition and fair pay. The enactment of this law demonstrates what music creators and digital services can do when we work together collaboratively to advance a mutually beneficial agenda.” Source: The Verge | Photo via aLIVE Coverage for Life Is Beautiful This article was first published on Your EDM. 13. Jimmy Kimmel is at it again with his wildly popular segment “Mean Tweets.” This time, he’s back with the fifth music edition, and the commentary is as brutal as ever. The Chainsmokers are featured along with a pretty diverse assortment of other acts including Tyga, Dua Lipa, The Strokes, Miley Cyrus, Korn, Nickelback, and their collaborator Halsey. Let’s just say — we’ve seen a lot of meaner tweets about The Chainsmokers. This one is actually pretty funny. “One of my employees was talking about how The Chainsmokers are actually pretty good and don’t deserve all the hate. So I fired him.” Hey, at least they aren’t Gwen Stefani. The pop rocker had to read off a really, really mean tweet about her fabulous self. “Gwen Stefani really is the worst thing to ever happen. Period. Full stop. #UghBarf” The internet can be a cruel place, so it’s great to see these artists can all laugh it off. We don’t want to give it all away — just watch. 14. Halloween is right around the corner, and that can mean only one thing… the circus is coming to town! Insomniac just dropped the creepiest and spookiest trailer of the season for Escape: Psycho Circus, Halloween weekend at NOS Events Center in San Bernardino. Escape is the largest Halloween festival on the west coast. To say that this year’s lineup is stacked would be an understatement, as Insomniac has packed a plethora of artists across all genres into four stages and two days of music. This year’s festival will feature a wide array of artists including Martin Garrix, Zeds Dead, Excision, Diplo, Eric Prydz, Kaskade, Green Velvet, and Jamie Jones. Not only are fans treated to an incredible lineup of music, headliners will be walking into one of the greatest Halloween experiences in Southern California. The Insomniac performers are on point, the Psycho Circus offers up an actual freakshow, and the coup-de-gras, the Asylum is a fully interactive haunted maze where you are strapped into a strait-jacket and mask and you must work your way through the terrifying tenants of a deranged hospital. The trailer is an absolute treat as the Ringmaster and his circus descend upon an unsuspecting town and wreak havoc, evoking feelings of watching American Horror Story or the Walking Dead. The interludes include festival footage and one look at what you’re missing and you’ll be dying to get a ticket and a Halloween costume. Although we can’t tell you what to dress up as, we can definitely tell you that tickets are available here. Check out Insomniac’s trailer for Escape 2018 below. 15. The story of Fyre Festival founder Billy McFarland is a long one, after defrauding attendees of the influencer gathering back in April 2017. Over the past 18 months, McFarland has been in court a number of times, and has recently begun receiving verdicts and orders. For instance, in July, he was ordered to pay back $27.4 million to his scammed victims. Two days later, he plead guilty to other scams involving Coachella, the Grammys, and more. Now, McFarland has been sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Naomi Buchwald to six years in prison on multiple accounts of fraud. McFarland reportedly said “I’m sorry” multiple times during his sentencing hearing as his defense begged for leniency as a part of his recently diagnosed bipolar disorder. But Judge Buchwald was stalwart. “It is my conclusion based on all the submissions that the defendant is a serial fraudster and that to date his fraud like a circle has no ending,” she said. “Bipolar does not excuse behavior,” she said, before accusing him of “white collar obstruction” in the investigation into his crimes. “This was not a good idea gone bad, the bad intent was long withstanding,” she said. Other victims were given the opportunity to speak during the sentencing hearing, including Joe Nemeth, an investor in McFarland’s schemes, which included Fyre Festival, a luxury benefits club Magnises, and a ticket scheme NYC VIP Access, a scheme that he’d developed while out on bail from his first arrest. “It took me 20 years of saving my lunch money to save $180,000,” he said, now lamenting he and his wife’s inability to retire. “I hope the justice system has the last laugh at Mr. McFarland.” via VICE News This article was first published on Your EDM. 18. Even though she’s no longer in the group, Camila Cabello is still arguably the most popular (ex-)member of girl group Fifth Harmony. But another current member, Normani Kordei, is throwing her hat in the ring with a forthcoming collaboration with Calvin Harris. The singer revealed the collaboration at the AMAs this past weekend speaking with Entertainment Tonight, saying it’s dropping “in the next few days.” She mentions another collaboration before that is coming out next Friday, and then says separately that the Harris collab is in the “next few days,” so we can likely expect it any time between tomorrow (surprise??) or next Thursday. Normani declined to reveal the title of the collaboration, but there’s no doubt that with Calvin at the helm, it’s going to be a hit. Check the reveal below at 1:40. 19. We’ve all known deadmau5 to be a rather brash individual, one without a filter. However, this week, he’s made tweets that led to him being accused of transphobia and homophobia, as well as calling another producer’s music “autistic shit.” These tweets are out of character for deadmau5, real name Joel Zimmerman, and the reality of that hasn’t gotten past him. In a statement posted to Twitter this evening, Zimmerman writes, “This has been a very difficult period and I sincerely apologize for my comments which were completely offensive and I take full responsibility for. […] I’ve consulted with friends and loved ones and I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m in need of professional help to get on top of my issues and become a better me.” His admission is made even more salient today, on World Mental Health Day. 20. Much of Odesza’s second album, A Moment Apart – nay, their past two albums – carried with it a peaceful and unobtrusive vibe. The sound was bright and melodic, never really pushing any sense of darkness or impending doom. Well, Golden Features is here to change that. Taking Odesza’s song “Falls” with Sasha Sloan, Golden Features creates a terrifying and foreboding musical atmosphere. Admittedly, not much of the original made it through the remix aside from some recognizable vocal chops and a slight adherence to the original melody; though, the rhythm is entirely redone. Calling this a remix is honestly putting it lightly; this is closer to an entire reimagining, not that we care. We’re all about this sound and love everything Golden Features has done this year. 21. Zedd‘s game-changing debut album Clarity just turned 6 and it’s crazy to think how far he has come since then. This 10-track masterpiece may have officially released in October 2012, but the music has withstood the test of time. The album’s five singles — “Shave It Up,” “Spectrum,” “Clarity,” “Stay the Night” and “Push Play” — earned the producer some serious and well-deserved recognition back then. And today, track-by-track it’s still a great listen. “My first album ‘Clarity’ came out 6 years ago today,” Zedd recently shared on social media. “It changed my life forever. Happy birthday, Clarity!” Digging up our review on the album, it’s obvious we cherished it from the start. “Only after listening to Zedd’s album can I truly see the direction in which of EDM is going, and it’s a good one.” Six years later and the album sounds as amazing as ever! 22. Yesterday, we reported that a lawsuit between Florida-based Worldwide Entertainment Group Inc., promoters of the Ultra Miami Music Festival, and Adria MM Productions Ltd., a Croatian company that produces music festivals in Croatia and Europe, had ended. The final judgement was that Worldwide be to pay $866,000 in damages to Adria; in addition, Adria owed $366,211 in damages back to Worldwide for breach of contract. Counsel for Adria were the first to issue a public statement, steering the direction of the story in their favor. However, a new statement from WEG asserts that reports that Adria “prevailed in this case” were false. Furthermore, it asserts that there was no file for trademark infringement by Adria, as was originally reported in May 2017 (though not repeated in more recent reports). Ultra Europe 2019 is still on track and tickets are currently on sale. WGE’s full statement can be read below. Worldwide Entertainment Group, Inc. (“Worldwide Entertainment”) is pleased with the jury’s findings. The jury not only rejected the fraud claims asserted by Worldwide Entertainment’s former licensee (Adria MM), but also, it found that the Promotional Agreement between the parties was valid and enforceable. The jury further and correctly recognized Ultra as the rightful owner of the well-known Ultra brand for international music festivals, including Ultra’s circle U design mark. Despite these undisputed facts, it has been falsely reported that Adria MM had either prevailed in this case and / or that this case involved a “trademark dispute” respecting the right to use the Ultra brand for similar events in Europe. To the contrary, Adria MM filed a ten-count complaint. No count alleged trademark infringement. Adria MM lost on all counts, except on its claim for tortious interference, which was based on allegations that Worldwide Entertainment’s actions to retake its 2017 production from the admittedly defaulted licensee was undertaken too swiftly. No findings were made, and no inferences can be drawn, that Worldwide Entertainment did not own its brands and trademarks. Worldwide Entertainment and its current licensee are already hard at work putting together its lineup for the 2019 Ultra Europe event. 23. It was only days ago that deadmau5 was in the news for being accused of making transphobic and homophobic statements on Twitter. He deleted the tweets and apologized, but he’s now in hot water for another reason. During a recent gaming stream, during which he was listening to music, he listened to a song from Slushii which he then proceeded to called “AIDS music” and “autistic shit.” Slushii, who is actually on the autism spectrum, responded on Twitter, “This is really disappointing.” as someone who’s actually on the autism spectrum, this is really disappointing @deadmau5 https://t.co/aCOa02p7Ck — SLUSHII (@SlushiiMusic) October 10, 2018 While deadmau5 is not the type to ever have society dictate how he speaks or the words he uses, he is also more at risk than ever of being held accountable for those words. With recent movements behind political correctness gaining significant steam, many of deadmau5’s remarks could be taken with malice or ill-intent, even though long-time fans of his know he just has no filter and doesn’t have any malicious intent. Regardless, being aware of how the words you use affects others is a basic human skill that deadmau5 has seemingly failed to master. Watch the clip below. 24. Even though we live in a streaming world, music piracy is still a significant issue. This, according to the Music Consumer Insight Report 2018, published by IFPI. New findings reveal 38 percent of the world still “obtain music through infringing methods.” Stream ripping is the most common way of pirating music and approximately 32 percent admit to using this method. Peer-to-peer (P2P) sites or cyberlockers attribute to 23 percent. When most think music streaming, they automatically think Spotify or Apple Music. However, YouTube is the prime source for streaming. The report reveals, “nearly half [47 percent] of all time spent listening to on-demand music is on YouTube.” Furthermore, the main reason music enthusiasts don’t pay for a streaming subscription is because “anything they want to listen to is on YouTube.” IFPI chief Frances Moore elaborates on what this means for the industry: “This report also shows the challenges the music community continues to face — both in the form of the evolving threat of digital copyright infringement as well as in the failure to achieve fair compensation from some user-upload services. Policymakers around the globe have been scrutinizing these issues and increasingly acting to address them.” Sources: Music Business Worldwide, Gadgets 360 This article was first published on Your EDM.
