As much as we sometimes hate to admit it, the modern bass music scene is incredibly saturated. With so many recent advancements in music technology, it is easier than ever for aspiring producers to sound just like their favorite trendsetters. While there is certainly no issue with an artist adapting to better fit current trends, many artists completely miss out on having any compelling flair or personality in the process. Sam Norris (pka Teminite) is one particular producer in the bass music world that has managed to impress time and time again by sticking to – yet, still evolving – his signature sound. The UK brostep producer has caught some well-deserved attention for combining his harsh squeals and roaring basses with strong, refreshing melody lines. Though Teminite’s forthcoming sophomore album Uprising sees Norris expanding into jazz and funk throughout its running length, melody-centric dubstep still undoubtedly plays a crucial role on the LP. One of the tracks from Uprising that really scratches that itch is the sole collaboration with Said, “Make Me.” While it marks one of the heavier-leaning moments on the album, “Make Me” still manages to work in several ear-candy synth riffs that truly makes the song stand out from its contenders in the dubstep world. We have the privilege of being able to premiere “Make Me,” which you can listen to below. If you happen to have a really keen ear, you might even be able to spot some reasons as to why Said is one of Teminite’s favorite up-and-comers. Listen: This article was first published on Your EDM. Italian producer/DJ Jean Marie is a man in no need of an introduction. He’s created some massive hits, working with everyone from Flo Rida to Snoop Dogg, and even Marta Sanchez. Additionally, he’s played best stages around the world including Space Ibiza and main stage at Ultra Miami and Ultra Europe. Among all of these accomplishments, perhaps the most notable is that Jean Marie is one of the first ever Italians to ever get to play Ultra’s prestigious main stage. This past year, his good friend and colleague, Ultra resident Mykris, invited him on stage for an electrifying and unforgettable moment to premiere his brand new single, “Moonlight Fiesta”, that you can watch here: The single is pure gold, and is followed up in perfect fashion with remixes from Mykris & Kevu who provide thunderous edits to the original. Keep an eye out for Jean Marie’s “Moonlight Fiesta” coming soon! This article was first published on Your EDM. Rezz’s collaborations have always bore the sweetest fruit – just look at her latest album and tracks like “H E X” with 1788-L or “Toxin” with Fytch. But now, she’s preparing for the biggest collaboration of her career and we have a sneaking feeling that fans aren’t ready. Rezz announced a little over an hour ago: “I’m gonna collab on a track w bassnectar.” That alone sent fans into a frenzy. I’m gonna collab on a track w bassnectar — Rezz (@OfficialRezz) September 11, 2018 But it also got her fans questioning if Bassnectar fans would be okay with it. Remember last year when a small group of Bassnectar fans were mad at Rezz for playing one of his tunes? (How dare she!) Yeah, that actually happened. The tweet drew a response from Bassnectar, and it’s likely from there that ideas of a collaboration sprouted. oh girl i am honored if you play any of my music! the vast majority of bass heads love bass, kindness & creativity, we love you! so mash it up properly :))) — Bassnectar (@bassnectar) November 9, 2017 Regardless of what anyone else thinks, we’re excited as hell for this to come out and we can’t wait. Maybe if you’re lucky you might hear it toward the end of her tour. Stay tune for more info. Photo via Prolo Photo This article was first published on Your EDM. While Odesza are mainly known for their softer beats and chilled out vibes, one track of theirs – generally reserved for their live sets – goes particularly hard. And fans have been wanting it for years. And now, they might finally be getting it. In teasers posted to Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, Odesza reveal the possibility with a supremely simple animation: a lone CRT TV sitting on a wooden table, images flashing on the screen against the sound of a billowing horn, before the word “LOYAL” flashes across the screen. “Loyal” has been a staple in Odesza’s sets since 2015, usually as a set closer. It will be premiered via Beats1 tomorrow at 9am PST. Check out the track being played live at this year’s Coachella below. This article was first published on Your EDM. Martin Garrix has done a lot the past two years, including winning DJ Mag’s Top 100 twice, headlining Ultra Music Festival, playing Coachella, becoming ambassador for Armani Exchange, and more. However, one thing he hasn’t done is release an album. Back in 2016, everyone thought Garrix was going to drop an album. And for the most part, this was because he said as much. Their videos. Their voices. Your world. Watch. Be inspired. Share. #FFWD2016.https://t.co/LD60JUN8B8 — Twitter Video (@TwitterVideo) February 22, 2016 But two years later and the closest we even got was his Seven EP, a collection of seven tracks released over seven days coinciding with ADE in 2016. Aside from that, we’ve only ever gotten singles: “Scared To Be Lonely,” “Byte,” “There For You,” “Pizza,” “Forever,” “So Far Away,” “Like I Do,” “Game Over,” “Ocean,” and “High On Life.” It’s hard to say what’s keeping him from releasing an album other than the fact that he just doesn’t need to. He puts out a single every so often, headlines festivals, plays Vegas and Ibiza, and gets paid handsomely to do it all. If it’s not part of his interest as an artist to release an album, there’s literally zero incentive to do so – especially now that he’s an independent artist with his own label, STMPD RCRDS, also founded in 2016. So will we ever actually get a Martin Garrix album? We don’t know. And honestly, who knows if it would even be any good. I really enjoy the way Garrix releases singles for the time being, and to shake that up in the interest of just adding another artist album to our collection could backfire (just look at Memories… Do Not Open). For now, Garrix has announced a collaboration with street performer Mike Yung, and has unreleased collaborations with Dyro and Justin Mylo on deck, as well, so you can look forward to all of that. But an album? Perhaps not for a long time. Photo via Rukes.com This article was first published on Your EDM. Source: It’s been two years since Martin Garrix promised his debut album, what happened? Yesterday was World Suicide Prevention Day. With the amount of lives lost just in the celebrity world this year to depression, drugs, anxiety, and more, awareness and transparency have become more important than ever in the struggle to make asking for help okay. In the interest of the day, DJ/producer Kygo chose to donate $30,000 to To Write Love On Her Arms, an American non-profit organization which aims to present hope for people struggling with addiction, depression, self-injury and thoughts of suicide while also investing directly into treatment and recovery.. “In honor of World Suicide Prevention Day (September 10), I’m proud to join the ‘Tomorrow Needs You’ campaign by @twloha. This year has been a tough year in the music industry, and I think it’s time mental health is taken seriously. I’ve decided to donate $30,000 to TWLOHA’s campaign. If you want to help as well, go to the link in my bio to donate. 100% of your donation will go toward connecting people to the help they need and deserve! Thank you @twloha for the work you’re doing.” While Kygo is not the only one working toward this cause, his donation and contributions are greatly appreciated. The ’60s were truly a different time. Free love, the Vietnam War, lots and lots of acid, we can never truly understand what it was like. But through the testimonies and stories of those who lived through it, we can get a better idea. And then we have Paul McCartney. As one of The Beatles, McCartney’s own experience in the ’60s was likely different than most. Touring the world and having the entire population at the tip of your finger is a humbling and interesting experience for anyone. But in a recent conversation with GQ, which was scheduled following the release of his latest solo album Egypt Station, he got very real. Speaking to Chris Heath, McCartney expounded upon one of the more “raunchy” stories of his youth. “What it was,” he said, “was over at John’s house, and it was just a group of us [around five]. And instead of just getting roaring drunk and partying — I don’t even know if we were staying over or anything — we were all just in these chairs, and the lights were out, and somebody started masturbating, so we all did.” Heath continues, “As they each concentrated on their mission, anyone in the group was encouraged to shout out a name that would offer relevant inspiration. “We were just, ‘Brigitte Bardot!’ ‘Whoo!’” McCartney says, “and then everyone would thrash a bit more.” Eventually one of them had to troll the group. “I think it was John sort of said, ‘Winston Churchill!’” McCartney remembers. “I think it was a one-off,” he says. “Or maybe it was like a two-off. It wasn’t a big thing. But, you know, it was just the kind of thing you didn’t think much of. It was just a group. Yeah, it’s quite raunchy when you think about it. There’s so many things like that from when you’re a kid that you look back on and you’re, ‘Did we do that?’ But it was good harmless fun. It didn’t hurt anyone. Not even Brigitte Bardot.” Read the full profile here. This article was first published on Your EDM. Source: Paul McCartney Recounts In Detail The Time He Masturbated With John Lennon Source

It’s that time of year again… when the spooky gets spookier, the haunting gets hauntier, and RL Grime drops his annual Halloween mix. As one of EDM’s resident horror aficionados, we look forward to this mix every year and we haven’t been disappointed yet. This year, RL Grime is reaching out to his fans and followers to submit their “scariest songs” for a chance to be used in the mix. Producers: this could be your own music! Fans: this could be a chance for you to shine a light on that one producer you’ve been obsessing over lately. Whatever your reason for submitting a tune, just make sure it’s absolutely fire. Fans can send tracks to halloween@rlgrime.com. Listen to last year’s mix again below. Photo by Jacqueline Verdugo This article was first published on Your EDM. Noya is back with his awaited debut LP, Fortitude. Definitely marking his most ambitious release yet, the album stays true to Noya’s “pretty much all things sci-fi” influences. During ten chaotic tracks, Noya proves he’s not bounded by genres and offers cinematic gems (“Staging”, “Torn Apart feat. Katie Davies,” “The Way Out feat. Max Laundry”) and of course earth-shattering drops (“Blood For Blood feat. Born I Music,” “We’re Done feat. Gravity” and ”Fly Away feat. Rico Act”). Rock-influenced banger “Just A Reminder (Interlude)” does a great job of splitting the LP in two and is maybe the most interesting tune Noya has released to-date. Noya’s debut Fortitude LP is here, and it’s time for Noya to finally establish himself as one of strongest up-and-comers in the scene. Adam Noya has been showcasing his heavy take on bass music for some years now. Experimenting with a big variety of genres, the American producer has come a long way since he emerged on Soundcloud with releases on Multikill Recordings, Abducted Records and many more. His efforts even caught the attention of Destroid & Pendulum member KJ Sawka, who collaborated with him on the huge, rock-infused banger “Rising Sun,” marking both artists’ debut on the legendary Kannibalen Records. Inevitably, it all led to the release of his debut LP on Warpaint Records, a dancefloor-ready bomb. Beginning from the dark drum and bass roots of his old moniker SPL, Champagne Drip has reinvented himself many times over since his DnB days, and it didn’t start with the name. When he released his first funky, ambient EP called Journey Into the Champagne Sea, the larger bass music community beyond his hometown of LA stood up and took notice, and it seems this artist has never looked back. With his new EP Obelisk out now on Liquid Stranger’s WAKAAN label imprint, Champagne Drip has introduced even more styles into his repertoire, including riddim, halftime and even some hip hop beats. Just because he’s keeping this name doesn’t mean Mr. Drip is done messing around with new styles or pushing the bass music envelope. Many beats and EPs after Champagne Drip started his liquidy journey, it seems he’s still just getting started. Your EDM was curious to see how the Dripmaster sees his own musical journey and evolution, so we sat down with him to talk style and substance. Read and listen: How did you hook up with Wakaan for this release? I go back quite a few years with Liquid Stranger. We reconnected more closely over the last year and decided that I should be releasing music on Wakaan. Obelisk sees yet another shift in your style, as the focus is back on heavy dubstep and riddim. What is interesting to you about reinventing your sound so often? How are you able to makethose switches in your brain? Doing the same thing over and over again is insanity. Music can be an escape from confines to me. To confine music would be removing some of its purpose. What’s the significance of the title Obelisk? When I listen to music I often see images in my head and I write these down. I keep a list of these interesting ideas, visions, or words and use it as a resource to title my work. When you set out to make this EP, did you write these tracks specifically to follow this theme, or was it more a case of you had a lot of tracks ready and just chose your favorite four? I chose four that would fit into an EP. When I write I feel like I have very limited control over what comes out. Usually I can determine the tempo and structure but everything else is a matter of finding what actually works. I end up with a bunch of tracks and I put together what I think might work as a musical journey. How do you see the evolution of your own style in the scope of the evolution of bass music? It’s hard to say. I think I’ve gotten really lucky. People love weird stuff these days and weird has always come very naturally to me. I feel like we have finally come to a point where bass music is no longer new to the masses and it takes creativity to be exciting. Now I’m really leaning into making unique stuff and it seems to resonate. It may or may not be common knowledge that you’re really into the science of sound and how tracks are put together. How did you apply some of this sound science to the new EP, and what do you think you learned? I’m always learning new things and experimenting. There’s no technique specifically used in this EP that I haven’t used on other tracks within the last year. Essentially, I’m carving a space for each sound so the mix works. I seek better ways to do this but it almost always comes down to what sounds are being used and where they are used. Then I add EQ and dynamics processing and tweak the arrangement until I start to run up against my limitations and hit a point of diminishing returns. Speaking of music theory and application, you also are quite existential with music. Was there anything in particular in these tracks that you thought there’s a real philosophical theme or theory expressed? Not really. I’m at the mercy of experimentation and out of that, what sounds good to me and moves me. Then I try to pick a cool sounding name, I wish I had some sort of detailed lore or meaning behind the process but it’s extremely abstract. What’s up next for you in terms of touring and shows? I am headed to Aston Manor in Seattle and Beta in Denver on September 5th and 6th respectively. Then I’m in Milwaukee on September 15th. After that I have Deadbeats dates in October and November in Eugene OR and Detroit. I’m at Escape Psycho Circus here in Southern California in the end of October. I’ll also be in Vegas, San Antonio, and multiple cities that haven’t been announced yet before the end of the year. Any collabs or singles you can discuss? I have collaborations with Liquid Stranger, Space Jesus, Minnesota, LSDREAM and a few others. I’m also working on more records for WAKAAN and a remix for What So Not and Skrillex. Are you thinking about working on anything with your old project SPL in the near future? Anything you can discuss? I won’t be doing any more SPL in the forseeable future. That project seemed to get me stuck and I hit a plateau with how far I could take it. Plus, if I was still producing as SPL it would probably sound like ‘Obelisk’ and everything else I’m doing. Going back seems like it would be pointless and maybe work against me. Obelisk by Champagne Drip is out now and available to stream on Soundcloud, Spotify or Deezer and purchased on Beatport. Back in May, Skrillex posted some videos on his Instagram of a new space for Guerrilla Tacos, hinting that he was collaborating with the brand and perhaps getting into the taco business. Four months later, we see that Skrillex is stopping by the Taco Bell Corporate Office in Irvine, CA for a crash course in tacos. The outing also doubled as a birthday adventure for friend Marilyn Hue, art director for 9-09 Collective. If someone got me a tour at the Taco Bell offices to make my own custom creations, I’d probably marry that person on the spot. Only thing we have to say to Skrillex is: wear a hair net! There’s little room for acceptance of offenders in the era of #MeToo and general sexual harassment and assault awareness. However, that hasn’t stopped massive music festival and conference Amsterdam Dance Event from removing a label head and DJ who made sexist remarks last year. ADE has even defied a petition asking for the DJ’s removal. First, some context: last year, Konstantin, co-founder of record label Giegling and a DJ himself, made sexist remarks in an interview. Konstantin said he thought female DJs were worse than male DJs and didn’t understand why they were being promoted. The remarks upset a lot of artists, male and female alike. Flash forward to ADE this year, and Konstantin pops up on two events during the event. Many artists took offense to this, and a petition was launched calling for ADE to remove Konstantin from the event entirely. The petition garnered more than 700 co-signers, including The Black Madonna, the DISCWOMAN collective, Shanti Celeste, Amsterdam’s night mayor, the head of record label Lobster Theremin and more. However, ADE has decided not to drop Konstantin from the event. Resident Advisor reports ADE gave the publication the below statement: “Of course we have seen the petition, we agree this is an important topic to address. Probably we will ask Konstantin to attend a panel and discuss this topic. Amsterdam Dance Event is the perfect place, and the awareness about this is becoming bigger and bigger in the music industry. We also work together with She Said So, the global network of women who work in the music industry.” It seems very old-school and outdated for ADE to take such a position, and we’re very curious to see what potential backlash comes from their refusal to drop Konstantin. State Of Mind are releasing their next EP, Land Of The Blind Part 2, on September 21 with some awesome collabs. One of the hottest on the record, in our opinion, is the lead track on the EP, a collaboration with fan favorites Black Sun Empire, “Six Beneath The Floor.” The title is a clear reference to burying the dead, which is where you’ll be once you hear this bombastic and intense drop. The tune blends neuro with some bassier elements from dubstep to create a entirely jaw dropping sonic experience. The full EP with four more tracks drops in 10 days! Prepare yourself by listening to “Six Beneath The Floor” below. This article was first published on Your EDM. If you’re a bass music fan, you’ve likely heard the name Monxx mentioned a lot recently – and chances are, not a lot of it has been positive. The dubstep producer has become notorious for cancelling shows to the point where it’s pretty much become a meme. Monxx himself is acutely aware of this and finally put out a statement late last night attempting to explain his absences, which he apparently ascribes to being “physically unwell.” Not to air out his dirty laundry, but it must be some chronic illness because Monxx has been “physically unwell” a lot recently, missing out on a lot of shows and letting thousands of fans down. And there’s still the issue of his merchandise orders, which have been delayed for months. Monxx claims that the designer of the merch Sank Designs have been out of contact for months, but that they’ve finally reconnected and fans should receive their items “any day.” Honestly, we really do hope that Monxx is able to recover from whatever is ailing him, because we and other fans clearly love his music. But DJing and touring isn’t for everyone, and fan confidence is at an all-time low. Read Monxx’ full statement below. Photo via Monxx This article was first published on Your EDM. It’s always a bold move for an artist to launch a new project, but it’s never done with disregard. Something so monumental requires planning, a trajectory, and a vision. MADGRRL has all those things plus a debut track called “GIVE IT UP.” “GIVE IT UP” is the perfect embodiment of the MADGRRL sound – it’s coarse, abrasive, and blends hardstyle with dubstep in a way that sounds natural and all its own. The hashtag #HARDSTEP appears multiple times on her profiles, and it presents a particularly high energy way for fans to headbang and give their excess vitality an outlet. Drugs and dependency are common topics of concern in the music industry, especially just recently. It’s easy to overlook weed during these discussions, because it’s widely used as a safe way to medicate and chill out. But, Mat Zo is here to let us know that even marijuana can take its toll. “I always feel like everyone around me is so mature and I’m still a child cus I haven’t stopped smoking weed for 14 years,” he opens up on Twitter. “If anything I feel like I’ve regressed.” No one would know it by hearing his amazing work. He’s a real production wizard, a creative genius, and regardless of whether he smokes or not — Mat Zo seems to have it together. But when it comes to touring, he admits weed is a crutch. In fact, he says the substance has “robbed” him of at least one thing, his ability to interact with people normally. Zo remarks that it has gotten “to the point where fans come up to me and comment on my social awkwardness.” This is another example of that common theme, that we’re all striving to find balance in our lives. Hopefully reading this helps someone. Thanks for sharing, Mat. Mat Zo On Weed Dependency If anything I feel like I've regressed — Mat Zo (@Mat_Zo) September 9, 2018 Touring with any dependency is tough, but I'd still rather be dependant on weed than some mood stabilizer that turns me into a zombie. I'd still rather pay a physical toll than a mental one — Mat Zo (@Mat_Zo) September 9, 2018 There's something wrong with the way people think it's cool. Kaskade Drops Brand New & Beyond Magical Odesza Remix [WATCH]
Cupe posted a topic in DJ Headquarters
You know that feeling when an ID has you up late at night? That 10 or 15 seconds you just captured from the show is playing on a loop and you’re thinking, “What is this?!” That’s exactly what happened to a Kaskade fan a couple of nights ago — still awake in the middle of the night and obsessing over an unreleased track, she decided to take to Twitter. She called out to a community of Kaskade lovers and the man himself to identify the mystery song. Soon enough, she got a response. “ID: Odesza – Falls (Kaskade Remix),” Kaskade said. “You might recognize the voice on the song… I worked with [Sasha Sloan] on the Automatic album. Remember the song Phoenix?” Well, that explains it. A track with Odesza and Kaskade in the mix is nothing short of magical! Listen to a glimpse of the “Falls” remix below and experience A Moment Apart all over again if you’re craving more of this beautiful soundscape. This is a man who needs no introduction, but we’re going to give him one anyway. Tony Fresch aka Dr. Fresch is an unstoppable force in g-house, and electronic dance music in general. As a producer, curator, tastemaker and mentor, he’s changing the game for the better with every move he makes. And, he’s only gaining momentum. Dr. Fresch has been around the block so to speak, having assisted the launch of a number of artists in the industry. Now, it’s his time to shine. He’s headed straight for the top, but refuses to do so alone. As heard through his signature mix series The Prescription, he’s bringing plenty of his friends along with him — and soon enough his own record label of the same name will house their releases. Let’s not get too ahead of ourselves, though. We were able to catch up with this fluorescent-haired phenom at Shambhala Music Festival in British Columbia this summer to talk his incredible No Introduction EP, the Ghetto-EDM University, and so much more. We’ll just let him take it from here. P.S. If you haven’t already rocked out to the No Introduction EP, who even are you? now would be a fine time to do so. Listen and read up below on one of our greatest inspirations — the definition of future ghetto, the man, the legend, Dr. Fresch! Dr. Fresch – No Introduction EP How has your Shambhala been so far? So awesome! Last time I just kinda came in a day before my set and didn’t do the whole experience. This time, I brought my friends and set up camp. I’m a part of the experience! I have a connection to the farm and I love it — I love this place. Now that your No Introduction EP is out, how does it feel? It feels so good! Man, I’ve been working on a couple of these tracks for two, almost three years — “Fire” and “No Introduction.” The other two tracks came together in the last six to ten months. I was looking to do a multi-track EP project that was focused on mid-tempo, electro and g-house, and now that the project is here it feels great. That’s all I can say. When did you know it was finished? When the collab with Jacknife came together. That was the icing on the cake! Dude, he’s awesome. The next year is gonna be huge for him. He’s working on a lot of cool stuff. That guy is in that mode in his life where he can knock out a track every other day. He’s just making so much music! So yeah, I had the first three tracks. I had written “Feedback” and got Mina Knock to rap on it. At the same time, Jack hit me with that collab. The original was just one drop with some different bass sounds. I was like, I love the concept, I love the vocal — let’s add some melody and some hip hop breakdown and beef up these sounds and go to town. It pulled the whole EP together. I was like, “Fuck yeah, we have a project!” It’s probably like picking between children, but do you have a favorite one to play out? I mean, “Fire” has definitely become that. But, I like playing out “No Introduction” too, because it’s so hard and raw. It’s just like a harder version of “Gangsta Gangsta,” basically. I actually wrote the skeleton for “No Introduction” first and it was a really basic version. I used that as inspiration for the “Gangsta Gangsta” project. I had all those melodies leftover, and I was like this is the perfect introduction track. It worked out really organically. But yes, “Fire” goes off! Do you remember the first record you bought? The Offspring – Americana. That was the first one I bought on my own. Before then, it was just what was lying around the house. My parents listened to a lot of Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin and The Beatles. But, The Offspring — I was 8 and getting really into skateboarding. That culture was so appealing to me. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater was about to come out. It was that period of time, late 90s. It was as angsty as I could get for an 8-year-old. What about the moment you first wanted to be a DJ? Well, I knew I wanted to be a musician from the moment I started playing classical piano even. I used to go to these recitals and play for a couple hundred people. It was the best feeling in the world! I wasn’t a great classical pianist — for the amount of years that I took classes, I should have been way better. I was so distracted! But, I knew I loved performing. Then, in middle school I started joining bands with my friends. The vision became clear, but I wasn’t always positive I’d become a rockstar. I didn’t learn guitar necessarily. I played keyboards and did backup vocals and played bass. When I was 16 I got into electronic music. When I was 17, I started producing in Logic Pro and started DJing on a Numark. Then, after playing a couple of house parties I just knew — this is exactly what I wanted to do. About 10 years ago exactly. Who were those gateway artists for you? Boys Noize. Justice. Masterkraft. Soulwax. The Bloody Beetroots. Pretty much anyone on Ed Banger. A-Trak. Even Steve Aoki back then was a huge inspiration. And, Diplo at one point. What’s your favorite song right now? Oh man, of all genres of anything! Dude, it’s this unreleased Ciszak remix of “We Like To Party” by the Vengaboys. I just got it. I’m gonna drop it here at the Fractal Forest. It’s the most insane tech house remix. Fisher and Chris Lake are making tech house take over right now, but it’s one of those tracks you play and even if you don’t like tech house — oh my god! It builds up to the deh deh deh deh deh dehhh, and then it’s just pounding tech house! It will probably come on at like 5:15 am. Ok I’ll be ready! And, what’s your go-to song for reviving a dance floor? If we’re in the same vein, the Chris Lake and Marco Lys remake of “La Tromba.” If you’re on the house kick. For bass, I love using Sevenn’s VIP of “BYOB.” Like, everything’s dead. You could just [filters down with his voice, then back up] — “Everybody’s going to the party have a real good time!” When you trail in with those vocals it connects with audiences and gets people ready for the drop. Has anyone ever asked you really messed up medical questions? I had a doctor once start to grill me on stuff. I was kind of caught of guard. I think more commonly, I have people make dirty gynecology or proctology jokes about checking out other people. Just, creepy jokes about me looking at girls and guys. It could be funny if it’s one of my friends, but I don’t know. Justin (Tony’s friend): I’ve always wanted to fake a heart attack in a public place with him. On a plane would be great. “IS THERE A DOCTOR ON THIS PLANE?” [laughs] If he stood up, I’d be like, “HE’S NOT A REAL DOCTOR! GET AWAY FROM ME!” Me: Just get a video of that if it happens so we can put it on the internet. My mom is actually Dr. Fresch. She is a lawyer, but she is technically a doctor. I am in fact not the real Dr. Fresch. Now that we’re talking about your mom — Is there something she has told you that has always stuck with you? Don’t try too hard to be something for anyone else or anything else. Only try to be yourself. She taught me that a lot growing up as a kid in the context of being on the playground. Don’t try to be cool or be something else. I think I apply that to production, too. There’s so many styles of music out there and the temptation to make what’s popular or trendy or cool at the time is always there. But, I’ve developed my own style and sound — so it worked in my career. I’m just going to keep the cheesy medical questions coming! If there were a prestigious school for electronic dance musicians to become doctors of the art, who would be the professors? I think Dr. Dre for sure. [laughs] Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine are the go-to obvious answers. I would put maybe Busy P in there — he’s a bad ass. That’s a good answer. And, Carl Cox in there. And, Maybe Tommie Sunshine. That guy has been raving before anyone else! I think he’s proud to say he has more of a knowledge about the industry than anyone. He should definitely be a professor! Maybe he’s the Dean! Who’s the dean? Tommie Sunshine! Anything you want to plug? I’ll be starting my own record label this year. It’s gonna be a lot of the music you hear on The Prescription — the artists that I play and the artists that I feature. And, it will also be called The Prescription. Details are to come. So, get excited for that! The label is going to be all about building up this family, this network of artists that I support and work with. People who are like-minded. Maybe like two or three years out from where I am in my touring career and just getting theirs going. I love sharing my knowledge of the DJ and production world with people. The guy I’m running The Prescription record label with, he goes by Freak On. I’m excited to support him. Excited to support Jacknife… [he rattles off a number of artists that we won’t give away just yet]. Anything you wish people would ask you in interviews that you never get to talk about? Recently I’ve talked about a lot. Like my old label, Prep School Recordings, I started when I was just making the jump from being a Hollywood DJ to Dr. Fresch. The team I started that with and kind of my whole journey until now. So yeah, I started the label with Louis the Child’s manager and my manager. We launched Louis the Child, SNBRN, myself, Illenium, Loud Luxury, and a lot of other guys. Then, I became Dr. Fresch. And, six years happened and here we are. A brief history. But, my favorite food is sushi. I don’t think I’ve talked about that in a long time. My ideal roll — if we’re doing rolls — a dragon roll probably. I’ve been so into straight nigiri and sashimi. I just like the fish. Toro, I’m all about it. Salmon, I’m all about it. I love a good Alaska roll, if we’re talking simple stuff. I’ve gotten more bold. I like uni now. It’s one of the few things I can eat and it doesn’t hurt my body, because I’m allergic to a lot of stuff. I’m a fucking sushi nut, man. It’s really expensive though. You can’t eat sushi everyday. But, I’ve said, that’s a goal! I want to get to a point in my life where I could order Michelin star sushi every day! That’s my perfect life. I don’t need to be Steve Jobs or Bill Gates. I just want to be rich enough that I can afford Michelin star sushi every day. Whatever that level is. And, I’m assuming at that level, all of our friends will be living in mansions next to each other. We’ll have a big weed farm there, too. Life will be pretty good. That’s pretty much it. Write us a script for having a good time at Shambhala! -Drink lots of water. -Pace yourself, because this festival is very nonstop. -Don’t be married to your phone. This is one of the few festivals that is truly the perfect space to get lost and be able to roam free with no repercussions. Take advantage of being disconnected. -Half of the fun is seeing new artists. I find myself getting engulfed in bass sets from artists I’ve never heard of before. Step out of your comfort zone! If you don’t usually listen to drum and bass, then go listen to a drum and bass set! -Get in the river! I’m gonna try to not lose my hair dye, but I’m gonna do it. Ravers truly do come from all walks of life, and what you see at the event is likely not what that person represents during the day. But for Miss Michigan Emily Sioma, also a member of the Cult Of Rezz, she chose to make an important statement during her introduction about the water crisis in her state. And now, the video is going viral. Sioma told ABC News that “it wasn’t a very spur of the moment decision,” as she’d contemplated making the statement for days leading up to that moment. “I had this gut feeling that if I didn’t make it into the top 15, I would never have a chance to be able to speak on national television about something that was important to me, or to make the moment meaningful. “I just really wanted to make sure people understood this isn’t just about Flint anymore. It still is about Flint but it’s about the communities across the state that are impacted by contaminated water,” Sioma said. Sioma didn’t make it to the next round of competition, but she certainly left her mark in her own way. Rezz even shouted her out on Twitter. One of the first things your friends will tell you when you take ecstasy for the first time is to drink water so you avoid overheating. What they won’t tell you, and likely don’t even know themselves, is that it’s possible to drink too much water leading to water poisoning, which can be fatal. Such was the case for two women traveling to Tomorrowland this summer who both passed away during the festival, one each weekend. The two victims were a 33-year-old Czech woman and a 26-year old Indian woman. Judicial Authorities said in a released statement, “By taking [ecstasy] a hormone was created in the women’s bodies that caused them to retain a lot of water in their bodies. The combination of the drugs, sweating, the warm temperatures and possibly dancing meant that the two women drunk too much water. It was this so-called water intoxication that led to their deaths.” The preliminary investigation believed that their deaths were the direct result of an overdose, but the actual findings paint a more bleak picture. The Antwerp Judicial authorities told media, “We are now going to get around the table with all the various parties in order to optimize the exchange of information concerning such complex cases with the ultimate goal of carrying out a more thorough investigation into those that are supplying drugs.” This article was first published on Your EDM. ANGELZ just hit us with one of illest releases in recent memory, the Saint Thug III EP. It’s been on repeat since Friday, collectively racking up plays into the hundreds of thousands and rousing g-house lovers everywhere. Heavily influenced by UK garage and hip hop, you might hear these sharp tracks played out in the hottest of clubs or the in the deepest of undergrounds — because ANGELZ knows no boundaries. This dynamic project boasts five dance floor destroyers, beginning with the riveting leading single “Letter After F,” and through a number of fresh-to-death collabs, ending it with the fattest of basslines. While his previous Saint Thug parts I and II EPs were put out on Tchami’s label Confession, this ANGELZ self-release finds its home on his own imprint, Maison Sainte. In the interview below, he details the influences behind this brilliant EP, but refers to it as a mere stepping stone for what’s to come. ANGELZ will soon embark on his third tour of Australia and New Zealand, where he has kept a devoted fan base since the beginning of his career. For those of us in other parts of the world, we’ll have to keep on believing ANGELZ will appear soon. In the meantime, let the gritty, grimy goodness of the Saint Thug III take over. Full interview below. ANGELZ – Saint Thug III Get it: x.co/SaintThug3 Now that the full Saint Thug III EP is out, how does it feel? Feels great. It was important in the story… It’s like a stepping stone for the next stuff. I can’t say much more right now. Best compliment you’ve received on the release so far? Someone in a review online said something like “ANGELZ channelled his inner Todd Terry for Letter After F,” and I thought it was a humbling comparison because the man is a legend in house & sampling. The leading single “Letter After F” really got everyone’s attention… Do you have a special attachment to “Still Tippin'” we hear sampled in there? I didn’t actually sample that song but this EP has a lot of Houston influences on it. I used to be really into chopped & screwed tapes, 8 Ball & MJG, Lil Flip… I used to be a huge Chamillionaire stan… All that H-Town stuff. That’s why I remixed SICKO MODE, too. It was a foreshadowing of the H-Town influences I’d have on the EP. I’m a huge Swisha House fan. I actually have some unreleased Slim Thug vocals on my hard drive that I’ve yet to use… What kind of impression do you hope the entire Saint Thug series makes on the scene? I’m showing it’s cool to do different styles of what I call “Club House.’ My ‘Poppin In The Streets’ tapes are also all over the place like that but it’s still always that 4×4. In what ways do you find inspiration and how do you execute that in the studio? Listening to my playlists running outside is the #1… I like high energy stuff that has style and a certain aesthetic. I like to listen to my own music a lot so I analyze it and I gain inspiration from that. Then I’ll just listen to a ton of different random things such as a lot of underground hip hop and mid-2000s hip hop. How would you say g-house has morphed over the last three years? Since we talked last… It’s only grown and I think we’re not fully aware of how big it could be yet. Like any new style there’s ups and downs in terms of what’s mainstream. For example, Brazilian Bass is basically G-House offspring and it’s played everywhere in the world. What’s the best thing about being a producer? Making what you want to hear. I’ve been doing this forever so I’m kind of over the honeymoon of “i’m a producer” etc. but I don’t take it for granted either. There’s something metaphysical about making music and sharing it, too. The news of Mac Miller’s death on Friday shook our generation. Another artist so young taken away by addiction and drugs, in the wake of so many others who have faced the same fate, feels like it can be too much. Many artists shared their own testimonials of Miller’s effect on their lives before his passing, including Ookay who had much to say about depression and drug abuse. One of the ways we can de-stigmatize issues around mental health and addiction and begin to address them is simply by talking about them. With the death of Mac Miller and now Hardwell announcing an indefinite hiatus from touring, it’s more important than ever to be aware of these issues. Ookay addresses his history with cocaine and alcohol, as well as depression and the overbearing pressure of success and relevancy in the musical world. When music is your passion and your career, separating the two and can be difficult and it often feels like no more than a job. “I felt like I was going crazy after the Fonda [show in LA on 9/1],” admits Ookay. “I was home for 15 hours after that show back in LA before flying for 17 hours to Asia. I haven’t spoken to a single person since. Or have had a decent conversation with another human. I miss it. I miss life. I don’t know anything else. I understand why Hardwell retired.” Ookay’s story is not unique to him, and the more artists that come forward about their own experiences, the less that anyone will feel like they’re alone. You can read Ookay’s entire message below. Just a little bit of my story. It’s taking me a lot to press the “send tweet” button but I know if I can touch at least 1 life. It’s worth it. pic.twitter.com/xqXOh2m6T0 — ookay (@Ookay) September 7, 2018 This article was first published on Your EDM.
