  3. Eric Prydz had quite a busy Halloween weekend, playing sets at both Insomniac’s Escape: Psycho Circus and Las Vegas’s Marquee Dayclub over Friday and Saturday. While fans of the prog house legend crooned over the unveiling of his ID “Maximus” (dropped during Psycho Circus and named affectionately by his listeners), several more unrealesed tracks have now been captured and uploaded to Youtube to keep the excitement going. Four clips taken from Prydz’ Marquee set were posted by user 808coug, three of them standing as potential album material for the producer’s Pryda side project, to be released in November. The fourth track, titled “Forget The World,” is a bootleg of the original song by John Creamer and Stephanie K. Each of the first three tracks see Prydz taking a minimal yet powerful approach to songwriting, giving us an even clearer idea of what the quickly approaching Pryda album has in store. 4. On September 20th, the legendary Gorillaz became incredibly active on their Facebook page, and began uploading new lore to Twitter. One month later, after a few short videos and a whole lot of Facebook posts, we know a new album is on the way. In anticipation of the album, Gorillaz’ frontman and bass player, Murdoc, has graciously interviewed with Noisey. Delving into controversial topics such as Brexit, Ringo Starr, and who was his first kiss and first fight with (Hint: it’s the same person). Murdoc is quite the eccentric character, and even more outrageous; we promise this is one interview you definitely do not want to miss out on. Murdoc is just a bit fickle about retelling the story of selling his soul away, but it makes sense that the devil would have it, given the man’s ungodly talent. “Listen mate, selling your soul isn’t like flogging a penis pump on Gumtree. It’s a big deal, a very private, sacred moment in a Sunday Satanist’s life. So please show some respect. Besides, even if I did want to tell you about it I couldn’t ‘cos I was totally whammed off my nut.” And when asked about his birthplace, Murdoc knows no bounds. “Mere mortals are born. Murdoc Niccals stage-dived into existence in a blaze of total fucking glory.” But when faced with whether or not he thinks rock is dead… well, that’s just rude. “I’m insulted you’d ask me that when you’re sitting close enough to feel the heat pulsing from my trousers.” To read the full interview and delve into the mind of the legendary Murdoc, check it out at Noisey, and keep up with us for more information on Gorillaz and their new album! 5. “Closer,” The Chainsmokers and Halsey’s biggest single of the season, has officially remained at the No. 1 spot on Billboard‘s Hot 100 for 11 consecutive weeks. Having now surpassed Drake’s “One Dance” by one week, it now holds the longest domination of the charts of any song in 2016. “Closer” now holds the longest No. 1 record since July of 2015 when Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” featuring Charlie Puth led for 12 weeks. The track remains as the top-selling, most-streamed and most-heard radio song in the United States, with its Youtube playcount increasing by 8% over the previous week. “Closer” also tops Billboard‘s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart for its 11th week. Trailing right behind The Chainsmokers on the list are The Weeknd and Daft Punk, whose single “Starboy” has now sat at the No. 2 position for four weeks. It also surpassed “Closer” this week on the audio subscription services-based On-Demand Songs streaming chart, coming as The Weeknd’s first single in this position since “Can’t Feel My Face” in 2015. At the No. 4 spot, DJ Snake and Justin Bieber’s “Let Me Love You” hangs steady above D.R.A.M. and Lil Yachty’s “Broccoli.” Meanwhile, Major Lazer and Justin Bieber’s “Cold Water” moved from the 7th to 8th position this week, descending from its peak place at No. 2. 6. Diplo is known for a lot of things; his ability to meld aspects of mainstream pop with more fringe international genres, his bombastic persona, and his business acumen all come to mind as core parts of his character. Since becoming a veritable celebrity, two additional characteristics for which Thomas Wesley Pentz has been both lauded and criticized are his close affiliation with Justin Bieber, and his brazenly candid statements in interviews. In a recent interview with FADER, a more even-tempered (but no less candid) Diplo addressed a number of topics, ranging from his unending touring schedule to the impacts of his braggadocious social media presence on his career. The dance icon also explained why he made the decision to work with Bieber. Diplo told interviewer Duncan Cooper that he had a pre-existing relationship with Scooter Braun. In a period during which Bieber was embroiled in a flurry of negative PR, Diplo co-produced the singer’s 2013 track “Thought of You” with Ariel Rechtshaid. Diplo noted that part of his motivations for joining the project were a measure to keep faith with Braun and company: “They showed me respect back then and were really nice to me, so I always just kept them within arm’s length.” Remarking, “I wasn’t even paying attention, but I know that [Bieber] wasn’t very cool,” Diplo elucidated his mental process in discerning how he could help to both revitalize the vocalist’s career while simultaneously executing his goal to rebrand Skrillex: “I was trying to really help Skrillex rebrand his own project, too. If nothing else, I thought working with Bieber would be the most noticeable thing we could do. It would be a great record, and it would make everyone really fucked up. It would make them really disappointed in themselves, and really confused, like, “How do I like this record?” Given the massive commercial successes of “Where Are Ü Now” and “Cold Water,” it’s apparent that Diplo’s strategizing paid off tremendously from pecuniary and publicity standpoints. However, the producer is often criticized by fans for selling out, or veering in a more pop direction. Nevertheless, because of his perennial independence and the vague cultural expectations which determine or dethrone trends, Diplo is undeterred by such feedback. “If I make a record that makes people think that Justin Bieber is cool and makes them dance to it—which seems to be one of the most daunting tasks ever—then maybe people will rethink the way they think about music, you know? It’s not so dry and clear, what’s cool and what isn’t. Good music is going to be good music. He’s somebody you don’t want to like, but you like it.” Read Diplo’s full statement on Justin Bieber below, and read the full FADER interview here. “For one thing, you’ve gotta understand that the music industry is different than the critic industry—the writers and the people that are talking about what is on trend or whatever. When you’re doing music, you’re always on trend or off trend, and it’s important to show people respect no matter what. I met Bieber a few years ago, producing a record for him with Ariel Rechtshaid called “Thought of You.” I’ve known his manager, Scooter, for many years—he used to manage Kelis. They showed me respect back then and were really nice to me, so I always just kept them within arm’s length. They trusted me when I asked for a vocal. It was like a no-brainer. They had hit a place where nothing was working for them, and Justin had kinda hit rock bottom with things, like from the press, from jail, and from, like, taking his pants down at an awards show or something. I wasn’t even paying attention, but I know that he wasn’t very cool. And I was trying to really help Skrillex rebrand his own project, too. If nothing else, I thought working with Bieber would be the most noticeable thing we could do. It would be a great record, and it would make everyone really fucked up. It would make them really disappointed in themselves, and really confused, like, “How do I like this record?” Even from day one, as I started to develop, I saw people’s perceptions of me as a producer, and they always want to put me in one box or another. Maybe that’s why I’m a target for things, because I don’t belong anywhere. If I make a record that makes people think that Justin Bieber is cool and makes them dance to it—which seems to be one of the most daunting tasks ever—then maybe people will rethink the way they think about music, you know? It’s not so dry and clear, what’s cool and what isn’t. Good music is going to be good music. He’s somebody you don’t want to like, but you like it.” Read More: Major Lazer to release new music in January 2017; listen to a new Diwali version of ‘Cold Water’ Martin Garrix will be touring with Justin Bieber Major Lazer share official new music video for ‘Cold Water’ Source
  7. Steve Aoki has been an ardent supporter of Hillary Clinton for president since she became the party’s official nominee back in July at the Democratic National Convention. Most notably, he recently snapped a selfie with Hillary and Bill at the third presidential debate; this, in addition to consistently tweeting out support for Clinton and less favorable words for the Republican nominee, Donald Trump. Now, he’s slated to support the campaign in a more tangible way as part of her “Love Trumps Hate” concert series. He will join others who’ve taken part in the series in the past, including Jennifer Lopez and Katy Perry. Aoki takes the stage at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on Thursday, Nov. 3, one day before early voting polls close in that state. 8. Psychemagik are known for many things: they’re great DJs, expert remixers, talented producers (both individually and as a duo), and most imporantantly they’re diehard crate-diggers. The fourth prong of their appeal is what we’ll be focussing on today. In the past the duo have released several crate-digging compilations – under the name Magik Sunrise – and they’re legendary mixes. If you scour Discogs you’ll see comments like “obscure brilliance” and “just when you think you know music Psychemagik come along with another compilation”. High praise indeed. So as you can imagine when we saw they’re returning to their crate-digging wares with a new compilation on Eskimo Records we approached this themed 3-CD compilation with both excitement and trepidation. Thankfully, ‘Ritual Chants’ is everything you’d expect from the duo that gave the world Magik Sunrise. The 45 tracks or so – which range from proto pop to chincy disco, and everything in-between – are arranged into three complimentary themes (beach, love and dance), and then the whole thing is meticulously programmed to play out as a one cohesive journey. And what’s this particular journey like? In a word: Magikal. Psychemagik’s ‘Ritual Chants’ is out November 18 via Eskimo Records. The venue will be specially constructed to host VR streams, which audiences will then be able to experience from the comfort of home with their own VR headsets. Blaise Bellville, Boiler Room’s CEO, says that the new endeavor is a result of their growing interest in immersing remote audiences, touting that the new venue will “bring people even closer to what it’s like being at a sweaty rave or an amazing concert half-way across the world.” Check out Run The Jewels’ 360° Boiler Room show below, and imagine even more freedom supported by quality video… We can hardly wait. 11. Let’s just call this one Your EDM’s Week In Music – late Amsterdam Dance Event edition! While I was busy at ADE over the last two weeks, the rest of the EDM community probably was too resulting in a relatively quiet 14 day period for next music. That said, Martin Garrix who was undoubtedly the real winner of ADE 2016 didn’t seem to get that memo and I very well could have filled out a Week In Music with at least 50% Martin Garrix tunes. Fortunately for everybody else I didn’t, and without further ado here’s this week’s weekly (mostly…) Spotify playlist! As mentioned, we’ve limited ourselves to two Garrix collabs only, “Hold On & Believe” with The Federal Empire and then “WIEE” with Mesto. NGHTMRE & Slander officially drop “Gud Vibrations” right as they prepare to kick off their bus tour, Justice continues to pump out the tunes with yet another huge single. And Jai Wolf drops the lead single for his forthcoming EP Kindred Spirits as does JPB for his For You EP. All that and more below. Photo by Rukes.com This article was first published on Your EDM. 12. In 2012, Swedish House Mafia catalyzed one of dance music’s most seismic events when they announced that they would be breaking up. The following farewell tour would last nine months, and prove to be one of the most commercially successful endeavors in electronic music’s history. In the trio’s wake, all three members have remained significant figures in the dance music realm; Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso have continued their partnership, while Steve Angello has seen further success in solo endeavors. Axwell, who has previously noted the possibility of a reunion between the group, sent SHM’s legions of fans into a frenzy after posting a tweet which could suggest a resurrection of the influential trio.In the now-deleted tweet, Axwell states “The countdown to a new era has begun. Never too late to get back on track.” The cryptic message is accompanied by a revised version of the Axwell Λ Ingrosso logo, which adds a perceived “A” character to the two members’ initials. Fans have speculated that the second “A” symbol could suggest the formation of a supergroup with Alesso, because of his history of working with the producers, and his recent appearance with the duo at this year’s Amsterdam Dance Event. The post also includes the date March 26, 2017, which marks Sunday of next year’s Ultra Music Festival – where Swedish House Mafia famously put on their final performance in 2013. Sources close to the group note that a reunion between the duo and Steve Angello is unlikely, and all evidence suggesting a revitalization of SHM with Alesso added to the roster is purely speculative. However, it’s safe to assume that something momentous is occurring within the ranks of Sweden’s most influential DJs. No matter the manifestation, March 26, 2017 is a date for SHM fans to mark in their calendars. 13. While Skrillex might not have quite the amount of mainstream production pedigree that say, a Diplo has, he’s still been in the game for long enough to rack up a surprising amount of production credits on some songs you probably had no idea he worked on. Credit again to Billboard for putting together this list which features some diverse production credits from K-pop to pop to metal and more. I’ve honestly never clicked play intentionally on a Korn song till now, metal just has never been my thing, but I was honestly pleasantly surprised. I don’t have much prior Korn experience to judge their other material on, but I can definitely hear some Skrillex and Kill The Noise in “Narcissistic Cannibal” here. Skrillex has collaborated with K-Pop singers in the past (“Dirty Vibe” anybody?!), but somehow his collaboration with singer “Hate” goes in the exact opposite direction that “Dirty Vibe” went in. Sweet, sassy, and sultry, “Hate” really stands out due to its blaring horns. I wish I could say more about the lyrics, but I’d be lying if I said that I understood a single word. “Bittersweet” by Ellie Goulding from everybody’s favorite film saga Twilight surprisingly features Skrillex on the decks! As sweet as Ellie Goulding’s vocals might be just by themselves, Skrillex’ production really helps to bring this song into another stratosphere when it comes to beautiful, emotional pop-music. Finally back to metal, or at the very least ‘metalcore’ once again! Skrillex teams up with Atreyu for their single “You Were King, Now You’re Unconscious.” As most of us know, Skrillex does come from a rock band background so it’s good to see him back at it again from time to time as he continues to showcase his musical diversity. 14. The Chainsmokers have had an unstoppable past year reigning atop both Billboard and radio charts with a slew of catchy pop releases. Their latest single “All We Know” featuring vocalist Phoebe Ryan has amassed over 50 million streams and is currently sitting at #18 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart just three weeks after official release. The track maintains the same tranquil vibe as the EDM super-duo’s past multi-platinum singles “Roses” and chart-topper “Closer” featuring Halsey. Now Dutch wunderkind Oliver Heldens has teased a tropical house remix of the pop anthem. While the official remix hasn’t been released, Heldens previewed the rework on his Snapchat urging fans to “tell The Chainsmokers to release it.” Watch in the video below. 15. Groove Cruise is nearly upon us! We’re so excited to once again be sailing and we want to give cruisers some tips on how to have the best time – or rather, Goldfish wants to give you some tips. We did something like this with Dada Life in January for the Miami sailing as well, perhaps you can take advice from them both! Festival Cruise Tips from Goldfish 1. Number one rule of any festival…Be cool. Kill with kindness and the whole experience goes next level for everyone. And please don’t do anything stupid! You know what we’re talking about 2. Milk thistle – we swear by this stuff and you should too. It’s a supplement that helps your body deal with all those tequila Red Bulls and festival food you’re gonna throw at it. Your liver will bounce back quick sticks. Lots of water too, not just the morning after. 3. Take a pair of sunnies you don’t mind losing or breaking…Leave the new Tom Ford’s at home fam. 4. This stuff isn’t rocket science. No one wants to look like Lobsterboy on day two. Slap on the sunscreen, plus maybe a cap so you don’t get fried. And while we’re on the subject of protection, good earplugs are a MUST.… We are going to be a generation with dorky hearing aids in our 40’s and 50’s if we don’t use them. Also, what happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas, so remember to bring your favourite peppermint flavoured glow in the dark birth control if you’re planning on getting lucky. 5. Don’t just go for the headline acts. Do some homework into some of the artists that you DON’T know anything about. We’ve lost count how many times they end up being the highlight of a festival for us. 6. This can never be said enough…Put your phone away on the dance floor. You don’t need to film EVERYTHING Be there in the moment and you’ll be amazed where music can take you. This article was first published on Your EDM. 16. Artists can often be their own harshest critics. Such is the case it seems with deadmau5 and his impending eighth studio album, which, if early reports are anything to go by, could be arriving as soon as November. During a recent Twiitch live stream, the Canadian producer casually remarked he had finished the album and shipped it out to some initial press outlets, before expressing his genuine surprise that the album was receiving positive feedback. “So we gave the album out today to a couple of press dudes,” Zimmerman says during the stream. “A friend of ours is writing up a thing about it and said it was a pretty good. I was kind of taken aback by that. I didn’t really like it that much.” The quote follows previous deadmau5 statements offering a similar sentiment about the new album: i fucking hate it to be honest. wish i had more time. https://t.co/vDBaoHbAHa — dead mow cinco (@deadmau5) September 30, 2016 yeah. well.. i figured i’d at least push this one out, and just start a new one. https://t.co/eQf6VA4ehw — dead mow cinco (@deadmau5) September 30, 2016 Despite deadmau5’s negative mentality towards his new album, it’s worth remembering some simple truths about the creative process. Namely, that as artists, we tend to hate the things we create due to the sheer act of mindless repetition. When working on a song, an artist may listen to it 200 times over the course of a few months. In the case of a perfectionist like deadmau5, that process may be tenfold as long. Check out our favorite cut from deadmau5’s impending new album, which, contrary to his sentiments, sounds like a worthy new single from the producer: < H/T: EDMTunes Source
  17. Energy drinks and alcohol… a combination tried and true and old as time (or at least freshman year in college). My personal favorite is a shot of jager chased with Monster, but I know that vodka and red bull is the drink of choice for thousands and thousands of millennials dragging their tired bodies to the club night after night. As it turns out, that combination might have similar effects to cocaine. According to a new study from researchers at Purdue University, the mixture “has the same effect on the brain as taking cocaine.” Two groups of mice were given cocaine and caffeine mixed with alcohol, respectively. After the doses, it was found that the mice not only behaved similarly, but also suffered similar permanent brain damage. Dr. Richard van Rijn, one of the authors of the study, told the Sun, “It seems the two substances (high energy drinks and alcohol) together push them over a limit that causes changes in their behavior and changes the neurochemistry in their brains.” To illustrate the effects even further, it was found that mice given the alcohol + caffeine solution showed “a slight tolerance to cocaine in their adult years.” One thing the study didn’t look into which is just as prevalent at some electronic shows is mixing alcohol and caffeine with cocaine use – such a stimulant overload combined with a depressant can’t be healthy over long periods, and yet it’s all to common at clubs. More research is obviously required on these findings, as well as replication studies, but the initial results are frightening. via BroBible, Sun This article was first published on Your EDM. 19. Apple has opened themselves up to relentless criticism over the last couple years, if not for their lack of innovation, then for the removal of hardware that we’re not yet ready to part with. Now, days before the expected announcement of a new MacBook Pro, images have leaked regarding one catching new feature: the Magic Toolbar. We can’t say for sure that it’ll be called the Magic Toolbar, but Brian Conroy has sighted a trademark filing for the name and traced it back to Apple. Seeing as they also have hardware names like the Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad, the new addition makes perfect sense. Regardless of its name, the new touch panel at the top of the Pro’s keyboard is getting a lot of attention. There appears to be a fingerprint scanner on the right side of it, and in the leaked images it serves as a convenient way to complete an Apple Pay purchase in seconds. When not in use, the panel will appear a natural black just like the other keys, but will be capable of displaying color, buttons, symbols, and a host of other intuitive features yet to be seen. Apart from the touch panel, the new MacBook Pro will have flatter keys, a thinner bezel surrounding the screen, and likely some increased performance. Stay tuned for Apple’s event on Thursday to learn more. H/T The Verge This article was first published on Your EDM. Source: Leaks Confirm Apple’s New MacBook Pro Will Have A Touch Strip Source
  20. 10 years ago today, deadmau5 released his first official single, “Faxing Berlin,” on Play Records. At the time, Joel Zimmerman was a budding producer, essentially unknown to the rest of the dance music world. The song eventually found its way into the hands of legendary BBC Radio 1 curator Pete Tong thanks to help of Zimmerman’s close friend Chris Lake. With Tong’s support on BBC, “Faxing Berlin” caught fire, gaining support by heavy hitters such as Tiësto and Mark Knight and giving Zimmerman his first break. That “Faxing Berlin” was able to enamor trance and house veterans alike was a testament to the refinement of its composition. In many ways, “Faxing Berlin” was the song that spawned the now infamous ‘deadmau5 pluck,’ which pervades Zimmerman’s music to this day and has inspired thousands of knock offs over the years. “Faxing Berlin” eventually became the first single on deadmau5’s legendary Random Album Title, kicking off Zimmerman’s Mau5trap imprint and even receiving a special “Piano Version.” Listen to “Faxing Berlin” on its 10-year anniversary below: Source
  21. Dillon Francis has run a bizarrely entertaining gambit of themes in his past music videos. We’ve seen Dillon play a googly-eyed sheik. We’ve seen him play “Mr. Steal Your Girl.” But now he’s giving the term “party in my pants” a whole new meaning with the release of his latest feature, the official music video for his September single, “Anywhere.” The tune is an easy going, euphoric house number, accompanied by vocalist Will Heard, who’s previously appeared on breezy tropical pieces with Kygo and Klangkarussell. “Anywhere’s” heavily pop-leaning appeal is now rounded off by a quintessentially spastic Dillon Francis video creation. Set in what appears to be a fashion shoot for an intergalactic Urban Outfitters, the video finds a variety of fashionistas and Dillon glued at the hip, taking the meaning of anywhere literally with the superstar DJ playing a part of the models’ goofy getups. 22. Michael Mayer has been around for decades, his career includes four albums, 23 EPs, nearly 170 remixes, hundreds of shows, and he’s one of the founders of the mighty Kompakt Records. Joe Goddard, of course, is a member of the group Hot Chip. Yes, the Hot Chip, whom have sold millions of records worldwide as well as been smash hit across the world. These two talented beings have joined forces to create an epic and beautiful release that will chill you to your inner core. ‘For You’ has a radio-friendly feel to it, but certainly sticks close to its deep house roots – a single that makes you want to return again and again. ‘For You’ is the second single from Mayer’s new album entitled ‘&’. The amount of talent that has worked on this album beyond Joe Goddard is insane. Hopefully we get one more teaser off the album before this week’s release – and if not, hold onto your hats because ‘&’ will blow you away. Words by Chad Downs. 23. Albums usually release on Fridays now, but there’s no reason why an album can’t release on a Tuesday, and Excision is the last person we’d expect to stick to convention. Virus is Excision’s biggest album to date, spanning 16 tracks – 6 more than X Rated and 5 more than Codename X, his album that came out last year. There was a three-year gap between his first and second albums, so the announcement of a third so soon after the second took everyone by surprise. And yet, it also feels like his most impressive album yet. While the album has some classic Excision-style tunes like the new “Neck Brace” with Messinian, there’s also the mellow “Drowning” featuring Akylla and “With You” featuring Madi, who was just recently featured on a collaboration with Slushii. The album does a great job of spanning the styles of dubstep while staying true to the Excision sound, so fans should be happy with the results. There are also some tracks on here that fans have been begging for, like the epic Space Laces collaboration “Throwin’ Elbows” or “Africa” with Dion Timmer. And of course we can’t forgot the absolutely wild “Harambe” collaboration with Datsik and Dion Timmer. The whole album is available now, and you can listen to it below.
