Halloween in Los Angeles never fails to impress, but this year seems particularly exceptional. From outdoor festivals, to intimate club nights — even a full-on rave cruise — Southern California will host it all over the course of Halloween weekend. To help naviagate the overwhleming options of LA’s dance music landscape, we’ve narrowed down our top party options taking place over the course of the weekend. Minimal Effort at LA Center Studios (Oct. 29) Minimal Effort has evolved into one of LA’s premier underground brands. Nowhere is this more evident than their recent expansion to LA Center Studios where they will host a 3,000 person cap outdoor festival for Halloween. With stages and talent like Tiga, Pete Tong, Coyu, Dosem, Jonas Rathsman and more on deck, this is easily our top pick for Halloween weekend. Tickets Circoloco at Union (Oct. 28) International house and techno brand Circoloco will be touching down in LA for their inaugural show on Friday. Teaming up with Sound and Rhonda International, the party will bring the iconic flair of their legendary Ibiza party, complete with a formidable lineup featuring the likes of Damian Lazarus, The Martinez Brothers, David Squillace and more. Tickets Maya Jane Coles at The Standard Downtown (10/30) If you’re looking to avoid the masses on Halloween and dance outside to a beautiful backdrop of the DTLA skyline, look no further than Tendencies Halloween showcase with Maya Jane Coles. Tickets Bonus: Groundwater at Petco Park (10/29-30) [San Diego] Dance music fans in San Diego will be getting a treat this Halloween with the launch of FNGRS CRSSD’s newest festival, Groundwater. Much to the delight of vinyl-loving turntablists everywhere, earlier this year Panasonic made the announcement it would be bringing back it’s Technics SL-1200 turntable series. Technics CTO, Tetsuya Itani, says the new SL-1200 model been redesigned from scratch to be sturdier than the original, which is why the price has been reported at a steep $4,000. While there has been talk of possibly releasing a less expensive version in the near future, early-adopters will need to shell out the dough for this one. A list of retailers carrying the new SL-1200 model can be accessed via the Technics website here. Axwell Λ Ingrosso just wrapped up another stint at Amsterdam Music Festival, and apart from coming out to one of the most insane entrance sequences ever, the duo kicked off with a brand new ID that has us feeling all kinds of awesome. But they didn’t stop at one. No, Heineken Music Hall got treated to two new ID’s from Axwell and Ingrosso. The introductory tune is called “How Do You Feel Right Now,” and it’s built as a heavy instrumental arrangement prime for kicking off some early-set hype. The second, “Dreamer,” has all the melodic richness and vocal composition of a classic Swedish House Mafia track, packed to the brim with euphoria. Watch Feed Me drop his new remix of deadmau5 and Kaskade
Cupe posted a topic in Drum'n'Bass & Jungle
Following his recent remix of Deadmau5’s “Strobe,” it appears that Jon Gooch, or Feed Me as he is best known, is adding yet another high-profile remix to his catalogue. Over the weekend, the British producer dropped his new take on Deadmau5 and Kaskade’s collaboration with Skyler Grey, “Beneath With Me,” while playing at Exchange LA. News of the new remake (which has yet to designated as a Feed Me or Spor production) first surfaced when a fan recorded the track’s premiere at Santa Ana’s Yost Theater earlier in October. The remix begins with Skyler Grey’s haunting vocals and the melodic chord progression of the original before descending into a chaotic drum ‘n’ bass drop — the kind you would expect from Gooch’s drum ‘n’ bass moniker Spor. No official release date has been revealed at present time. Source -
“Out with the old and in with the new” is usually a good saying, but Apple doesn’t seem to know which old stuff to keep around. Macotakara, the website that accurately predicted the demise of the headphone jack in the iPhone 7, has issued a new report that the old USB port on the new MacBook 12″ is going to meet the same fate. It is rumored that the old USB ports will be replaced with new USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 ports on the new 12″ MacBook. Alongside these alarming rumors are rumors that the 11″ MacBook Air will be discontinued in hopes of driving up the sales of the new 12″ MacBook. This means that many people who rely on the old USB ports will either have to shell out more money to buy adapters, or invest in newer computers. Considering most DJs use MacBooks alongside mixers, this could cause an uproar amongst artists everywhere. Stay tuned for updates on the story as we find out more information. Apple currently sells a USB-C dock with other USB and HDMI ports for $79. Information from Macotakara, though proven correct in the past, is still just speculation until the official product specs are released when the new MacBook is revealed. A rare live set from Daft Punk has recently resurfaced, dating all the way back to 1997. The set is taken from Rex Club in Paris, and showcases a young Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter fresh off the release of their debut album Homework on Virgin. As such, the set is pervaded by classic staples from the French pair such as “Da Funk,” “Rollin’ and Scratchin,” “Around the World” and more. The story behind the recording is almost as interesting as the set itself. Supposedly, the mix was recorded by Daft Punk themselves, directly through the mixer (hence the lack of crowd noise), and then leaked by one of the club’s employees, who was later fired for doing so. As such, the quality of the audio is much better than you’d expect from a 1997 club set. Listen to it in full below: Tracklist: 01. Alive 02. Can You Feel It? (C.L.S. cover) 03. Musique 04. Alright, so the DJ Mag Top 100 was a week ago. We can finally go back to our normal daily routines of listening to music that we like without having to bow down before an autocratic list that dictates our listening habits… phew, right? BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE! A random Facebook page called Dubstep Online has released its own list of Top 100 DJs just for dubstep. You wouldn’t think there were that many actual dubstep DJs, but you’d be wrong. Pioneers like Loefah, Kode9, Benga, Hatcha and more top this list and — wait, that’s not right. The top 10 on this list aren’t bad, but the list as a whole has brought up a lot of discussion that parallels the DJ Mag Top 100 pretty effortlessly. “Do you know the roots of dubstep?” “All of these guys sound the same.” “Where’s the real dubstep!?” The only producer on the list who helped dubstep in its come up is Rusko, and he’s placed at #9. Other than that, there are a lot of guys who produce pretty damn similar riddim styles, and lots of brostep, and no real innovation brought to the genre. But again, the only thing we’re doing by debating the list is giving credence to it, and no one person’s top 100 is going to exactly match another’s. So at the end of the day, as with the DJ Mag Top 100 list, listen to who you want to listen to and don’t care that some arbitrary list says your favorite DJ is the 75th best. Probably the most accurate comment on the list is thus, “If the poster removed all the numbers the list would just be a list of favorite producers, not a comparison list.” If you’re still curious, check out the “list” below, and let us know who your top 10 are. You can also read the discussion in the comments on the list here. Photo by Rukes.com This article was first published on Your EDM. In 2015, ‘Pink Supermans‘ made headlines as the dangerous new drug on the market. The lethal batch of pills – deceptively sold as ecstasy unbeknownst to buyers – was linked to at least four deaths in the UK at the tail end of 2014. The pink Superman pills are again circulating the drug market, particularly in The Netherlands. Just a day after the launch of ADE 2016, warnings plastered bathroom doors, hotel lobbies, elevators and more to help spread the word regarding the pills, which The Trimbos Institute in Holland found are adulterated with PMMA. An alert was even sent to festival and conference attendees via the ADE app. PMMA (Paramethoxymethamphetamine) is a stimulant that gives users hallucinogenic effects similar to MDMA, but is toxic at lower doses. If taken in high quantities, PMMA can lead to an increased heart rate, elevated body temperature, a coma and even death. To learn more about MDMA, drug use and how to party safer, head to The Drug Policy Alliance’s website. Before trying out Plantronics‘ brand new Backbeat PRO 2 headphones, my knowledge of the company was extremely limited. As someone who rarely researches new electronics until my current versions are dysfunctional, I had no idea what kind of strides the more than 50-year-old organization had made since its time providing headsets for Neil Armstrong during his iconic moon landing. Their extensive catalogue of products, ranging from business-focused headsets to gaming headphones, is a testament to their longstanding history as one of the most esteemed and prolific brands in the market. Luckily for me, I was given a front row seat to the newest item in their line of personal music and entertainment devices. The Backbeat PRO 2 headphones were released to the public on October 18, and came as Plantronics’ worthy follow-up to the original Backbeats based on responses given to them by users and fans. With a foundation centered on the original pair, the PRO 2 succeeded in improving on many of the device’s most core aspects and features while simultaneously innovating and exploring new avenues to make it stand out from the herd. Upon opening the packaging, the first things that struck me were the design and aesthetic of the PRO 2. Featuring various tones of brown and black, the textured accents and wood paneled plates gave the device a more casual and refined look than the usual combination of silver, chrome and black that I’ve found on most other headphones in the category. Before I even put them on, I could also tell how comfortable they would be based on the large cushioning and thick band at the top. My sensitive head has often forced me to extend headphone bands above their limit for prolonged use, but the soft mesh of the Pro 2 and extra-padded earcups completely removed the issue. The 35% decrease in overall device volume and 15% decrease in weight from the original Backbeats made the entire experience of wearing the PRO 2 cozy and secure. As someone who listens to music during nearly all hours of the day, sound quality is always the most important factor for me when deciding on the value of headphones. The first thing I noticed when turning on the PRO 2 was the active noise cancellation. This being my first pair of over-the-ear headphones, I was pleasantly surprised at how effective it was at removing outside noise from my listening environment. The option to switch between noise cancelling and Open Listening was also something I didn’t know I wanted until I tried it, as I found it useful to listen to the environment around me with heightened sensitivity when waiting for the train to call my stop or for a coffee shop attendant to call my name while my music played on. With my customizable listening environment set in place, I visited the song that I always use to test the sound quality and balance of new sound systems. What I found was very satisfying, especially when considering the modest $199 price tag of the headphones. The bass frequencies were warm without being overpowered, the mids were strong and natural sounding, and highs were clean despite lacking slightly in the crispness I’ve found in similar models. Overall, the listening experience was very enjoyable, and one that I’d imagine would be absolutely stellar for the non-audiophile. As far as battery life goes, the PRO 2 is truly in a league of its own. With a three-hour or less charging time, the device retained nearly 24 hours of use with no connectivity issues. While in the headphones’ DeepSleep function, it can even maintain battery for five or six months! If one uses the PRO 2 for just a few hours a day, it can go without charging for more than a week, coming as what I believe to be one of its most important conveniences. What separated the PRO 2 the furthest from other headphones in its class, however, were its arsenal of special features. A lasting, 100m bluetooth connection that can be paired to two different devices, a jog wheel on the left ear for quick volume manipulation, smart technology that pauses media when the headphones are removed from the ears, dual microphones for pristine call quality, and much more. Using the headphones felt extremely fluid and customizable no matter where I was or what I needed to change, allowing my focus to remain on the media or call at hand rather than the device that was hosting them. For the price of $199, it’s safe to say that the Plantronics Backbeat PRO 2 is at the front of the pack, and well worth the investment when looking for an upgrade. For the user leaning towards the casual side of the market while still wanting to maintain the look and sound quality expected of some of Plantronics’ most acclaimed models, the PRO 2 is truly the way to go. The Chainsmokers are back at it again breaking new ground for EDM. Last week the New York-based duo gleefully shared the news that all three of their top charting singles of the past year, “Roses”, “Don’t Let Me Down” and “Closer” have all been certified triple platinum status by the RIAA (Recording IndAssociationcation of America). Platinum status is achieved once a single sells 1 million copies or reaches the equivalent with the streaming conversion – no easy feat indeed. Yet, somehow The Chainsmokers have managed to do that on three out of their last five singles. The jury’s still out on “All We Know” which has yet to break into the top 10 of the Hot 100, unlike the other three singles, but may still reach charting success yet. Congrats again to The Chainsmokers on another incredible achievement in 2016! Just got this news thank you guys this means more than we could ever express. Justice has a new album on the way, and Woman is shaping up to be everything we could want in a return LP from the iconic duo. Now, after playing a free show with Boys Noize and Daniel Wang at Berlin’s Kreuzberg Chalet, a new single called “Alakazam” has surfaced. Familiar sound designs of † (Cross) are tucked neatly amongst the new arrangement, with a delicious bassline to drive the piece forward, and chocked full of grooving retro elements. By all acounts “Alakazam” has come forward as a textured masterpiece, and it’s hard to imagine anything less from artists as revered as Justice. Woman is due for release on November 18th, and with less than a month remaining, we can barely contain our excitement. In the meantime, check out what Xavier de Rosnay has to say about the new material in an interview with Electronic Beats. When asked about the atmosphere of the new LP in comparison to Audio, Video, Disco being a “daylight album,” Rosnay described the first time listening to the new record in earnest. “Woman certainly is kind of a solar record, too, and most of its tracks are intended as music to share with your friends. The first time we listened to it outside the studio was in a car when we were driving from Los Angeles to Palm Springs. That’s when we realized how good it works as a whole. But to fully characterize the record in one word right now is very hard to say.” The concept behind the album title itself makes complete sense, and I feel a bit of a fool for overthinking it as much as I have. “‘Woman’ is a powerful word with a powerful meaning. All life comes from women. The Roman goddess of justice is a woman, so that’s a connection, too. Additionally, the record is intended to be a homage to all the women in our lives. Women in general evoke strong feelings.” And it’s a tad surprising to hear that Justice is more comfortable playing rock music festivals than electronically billed gatherings. But regardless, the duo has the right idea when it comes to approaching a show, whether it be an intimate gathering or massive festival. “For us it’s important to challenge the crowd to a degree that it’s more fun for everybody.” H/T EDMsauce | Electronic Beats Photo by Rukes.com This article was first published on Your EDM. With Facebook’s ever-evolving features and updates to their social media platform, they’ve been able to constantly remain above their competition. With continual integration into the Facebook mobile app itself, individualized activities are becoming more streamlined and convenient all within the app. In a new update coming to Facebook developers, you will be able to order food via Delivery.com and Slice, get a professional services quote, and buy a movie or event ticket through Ticketmaster and EventBrite all without ever having to open up a new app and leave Facebook. Buying tickets directly through the Facebook app could prove to be immensely convenient based on the fact that 650 million people use Facebook’s events feature each month, but have always had to go log in somewhere else like EventBrite or Ticketmaster to obtain admission. Staying within the Facebook app rather than going to separate webpages could make Facebook more popular with event promoters looking for a high-conversion destination to their ads. This is all about taking the traffic currently flowing to Google, Yelp, Fandango and other sites and directing it towards Facebook. It would provide Facebook with lucrative data on what you buy and from where. If Facebook knows you frequently buy concert tickets for a certain venue or order a specific type of food, it can better target its ads towards you. h/t: Techcrunch | Photo: Rukes.com This article was first published on Your EDM. Here we go again, folks. Back in September, The Chainsmokers quietly added credits from The Fray’s Isaac Slade and Joe King to “Closer” after it was found that the piano from the track “Over My Head (Cable Car)” sounded extremely similar to the main melody from the new dance track. After what could have been an impending lawsuit, one critic speculated that the credits had been added by The Chainsmokers as part of a settlement. Now, it appears the electronic duo may have borrowed a piece of another song for the hit track, “Don’t Let Me Down.” Reddit user u/whySoserious01 posted to the EDM subreddit on Sunday with a link to a 2011 German rap song “Poesie Album” off the fourth studio album by Hamburg artist Samy Deluxe. In the description, the Reddit user states that The Chainsmokers basically took the sample straight from the Samy Deluxe track and used it as one of the main sections on “Don’t Let Me Down.” “Ever since I’ve heard the song I was wondering where I’d heard the first part of it before. It sounded so familiar. I haven’t found any answer on the Internet, until i came across a popular german rap song.” While the incident with The Fray in September was a bit more open to interpretation, the new comparison is truly a blatant one. The bouncy guitar plucks and accompanying melody from the two tracks are nearly identical, with only a few slight tweaks in The Chainsmokers’ version. Currently, ASCAP does not show Samy Deluxe (Samy Sorge) as one of the credited writers. Compare the two tracks in question below, and let us know what you think about their relation. Dirtybird dynamo, Justin Martin, is undeniably one of house music’s most influential contemporary figures. Despite the bass-driven nature of his music, the San Francisco-based luminary always brings a light-hearted, easygoing mood to his sets. Following this theme, Martin has decided to start a new party series around a long-time love of his: pizza. At San Diego’s brand new GROUNDWATER festival, Martin will be introducing his first Pizza Party as a pre-party during the festival weekend. Soundcloud has just added a brand new feature to its arsenal of listening tools, coming as one of the only updates to the popular streaming site in recent times that hasn’t brought with it a load of controversy. By checking the right-hand column on the Soundcloud home page, users will now see a section called Listening history near the bottom. While on the home page, the previous three songs that were listened to will show up for quick access. On the History tab itself, a complete list of the user’s listening history can be found neatly organized below a list of six sources that we believe are ones that the user listened to more than the others. An option is given to irreversibly clear one’s listening history, as well. The History tab, so far, is only available on browser. We’re glad that Soundcloud decided to address a common request by its users and add the listening history feature. It seems like every day that a song we play is passed on too quickly and forgotten. With the new History feature, it’ll that much easier to locate and discover the tracks that we may have overlooked. This article was first published on Your EDM. Thinking about flying to your next festival? Your next flight could be on a private jet. For cheap. California based company Jetsuite is looking to change the you fly. Jetsuite is a private charter jet company which currently flies to six destinations. Started 7 years ago by a former JetBlue CEO, Jetsuite is the ultimate solution for those looking to escape the perils of flying commercial while still receiving world-class treatment. Let’s be honest — flying commercial can be a hassle. It always is. A 45 minute flight out of LAX can turn out to be a 4 hour ordeal. Long security lines, baggage wait times and more are just some of the routine struggles we all face while flying commercial. We’ve almost gotten so used to it that we kind of just accept it for what it is. But that’s all changing. Earlier this year, Jetsuite announced JetsuiteX, an incredibly new affordable way to fly private. Forget those ugly large planes and baggage fees and restrictions, and say hello to gorgeous private jets, free beverages, and no wait times. JetsuiteX is a private jet service, without the hassles of going through TSA and those crowded airports. Jetsuite currently has 5 30-seat jets in their fleet, which get you from Burbank to Las Vegas, San Jose, Concord and more and they depart from private terminals. The best part? You don’t need to break the bank when hopping on a JetsuiteX flight. The prices are quite often comparable to flying commercial, and in our own experience, we found tickets on JetsuiteX cheaper than flying on some major airlines. Gone are the days where you have to pay for drinks on a flight. JetsuiteX provides you with two complimentary alcoholic drinks of your choice. That’s right. Free! There’s also power outlets, and even free Wifi on JetsuiteX flights. Get a buzz going on the way to Vegas for your next trip, and don’t worry about pinching pennies till you hit the strip! JetsuiteX is changing everything. Affordable flights, without the annoying and bothersome experience of flying commercial. We recently took a flight from Vegas to Burbank (where they have their own terminal!) and were absolutely speechless. We showed up 25 minutes before our flight, were greeted with a complimentary beverage and then escorted on the tarmac into the jet. About 30 people were on flight, all of which were basking in the private jet experience. We plugged in our phone, connected to the wifi to post on Instagram, and in minutes we were in the air. Although just a 45 minute flight from Vegas, in the air we were treated to free beverages and snacks by Jetsuite’s very friendly in-air hostess. When the plane landed, our luggage was brought to us concierge style, less than 5 minutes later. We arrived in Jestuite’s private terminal in Burbank, and just two minutes we got in an Uber (without hassle!) and were on our way home to Hollywood. It was without doubt the smoothest flying experience we’ve ever encountered. So, are you convinced yet? With festivals in Vegas and up North in California, if you’re flying this is hands down the way to go. You can even get special deals and charter an entire jet for you and your fam! Imagine that. Flying to a festival on a private jet with your rave fam? It doesn’t get any better than that. While Jetsuite currently serves the west coast, who knows where they might expand to in the future. But the future sure does look bright. One thing is for sure — this changes everything. Flying just got a whole lot easier and consider us spoiled. Forever. Over the weekend, we took a gander at what we thought would be the tracklist for the forthcoming EP by The Chainsmokers, Collage. “Closer,” “Don’t Let Me Down,” and “All We Know” were the three tracks we picked, along with the upcoming single “Setting Fires.” As it turns out, we were almost entirely correct. The only track we missed was “Inside Out” with Charlee, the track with perhaps the least amount of crossover potential as the others. Nevertheless, it appears that it will be the second to last track of the EP. “Setting Fires” will feature indie group XYLØ who, like The Chainsmokers, are signed to Sony subsidiary Disruptor Records. In any case, from start to finish, this is how the EP will look… . For those wondering, it’ll drop on November 4th alongside “Setting Fires”. In the meantime, revisit the four tracks that have already dropped below. Image: Rukes This article was first published on Your EDM. Source: The Chainsmokers Reveal Tracklist for ‘Collage’ EP Source

The Glastonbury hype train has been ablaze with rumors of all sorts, but the biggest has just been put to rest. Now that Radiohead has been announced as as the first official headliners, Organizer Emily Eavis has put her foot down to squelch any hopes of either Daft Punk or The Stone Roses playing in 2017. “There’s no more [headliner] announcements now for a while, but I will tell you the other two that have been rumoured aren’t happening. Other rumours can roll and that’s fine. Pretty much everyone is rumoured every year. That’s great, but everybody was keen to get [Radiohead] out and let people know as this was such a big one.” According to Eavis, about 90% of 2017’s lineup is ready to go, and because of the festival’s year hiatus in 2018, they’re doing their best to jam as much music as possible into next year’s event. Eavis did not comment further regarding any other rumored artists for Glastonbury ’17. H/T Mixmag This article was first published on Your EDM. Joel Zimmerman often defies the four-minute boundaries within which most commercially successful artists confine their songs. However, while deadmau5 songs quite often transcend the six and seven minute marks, it’s less common for them to break into double digits. In 2006, Zimmerman released deadmau5 Circa 1998-2002, a compilation of music he produced surrounding the turn of the millennium under his old pseudonym, Halcyon441. The compilation includes the longest deadmau5 song to yet be released, entitled “Hiatus Fantasy” (or “Haitus Fantasy,” as it was originally spelled). Spanning over thirteen minutes in length, “Hiatus Fantasy” was apparently inspired by Final Fantasy; through energetic tempos, and ethereal sound design, the song retains the video game sensibilities which led Zimmerman to create it. In 2014, deadmau5 noted that “Somewhere Up Here” has usurped the honor of being his longest track, at over fifteen minutes-long. However, the version of the song which appeared on while (1<2) was shortened to five minutes, allowing “Hiatus Fantasy” to retain the distinction of Zimmerman’s most extensive track to see a release. In the Reddit thread where deadmau5 remarked about the length of “Somewhere Up Here,” he also quipped that the sound engineering of his Final Fantasy homage “sounds like SHIT,” and entertained the notion of reworking its sound design. Though deadmau5 has yet to release an updated version of “Hiatus Fantasy,” one may be on the horizon at some point in the future. H/T: Reddit. What started as a humble beach festival in Miami nearly 20 years ago has since become the torch bearer for electronic dance music on a global scale. Ultra Music Festival has just finished up its summer world tour, closing out in South America with eight events in nine days in Brasil, Peru, Chile, Paraguay, and Bolivia. In this year alone the festival has accommodated over 1 million fans from all over the world with 165 million tuning in via UMF TV’s Ultra Live. The grand finale of a summer of insanity that includes Miami, Croatia, Asia, and now South America, Ultra’s first edition in Brasil took place at the stunning Cidada Marayilhosa in Rio De Janeiro. The completely sold out, two-day event was held at the home of Rio’s annual carnival event, with over 60,000 fans swarming the northern part of city proving that South America’s appetite for electronic music is just as voracious as the northern hemisphere. Set to a magical backdrop of the Corcovado and Cristo Redentor, the enormous ULTRA Main Stage, featured headliners including Above & Beyond, Dash Berlin, Hardwell, Krewella (Live), Martin Garrix, DJ Snake and Steve Aoki, provided the perfect centerpiece for the juggernaut event, complete with state of the art production, lighting and pyrotechnics. In an exclusive partnership with MTV Latin America (and in a first for ULTRA Worldwide) ULTRA Brasil was broadcast live to over 50 million households in 26 countries across the continent. The two-day live stream was hosted on MTV’s digital platforms in Latin America and Brasil, in addition to the primetime specials that were also televised live from the Sambódromo across the weekend. While Tomorrowland may have bragging rights in Europe, after 26 events on 5 continents in one year alone it’s safe to say that when it comes brand recognition there is no greater or more well-respected presence than UMF. ULTRA Worldwide will continue its international expansion further in 2017, moving into some incredibly exciting new territories across the globe. Further details will be announced soon. Earlier today, a video of Hardwell ranting about the state of the DJ Mag Top 100, taken by a fan in the crowd during the Revealed Showcase at Amsterdam Dance Event, went viral on YouTube and Facebook. The original video and all copies of it garnered hundreds of thousands of views, not to mention the many blogs and news sites that began to cover the story as well. Since the story first went live this morning, the videos have been issued copyright strikes one by one as quickly as they appear. The videos on YouTube showed the claimant to be [Merlin] Cloud 9 Music BV. A quick Google search revealed Cloud 9 to be the publisher for many artists such as Armin van Buuren, Fedde Le Grand, Dannic, and… you guessed it, Hardwell. The issue here is that Cloud 9 is currently using the copyright infringement system as a method of censorship rather than for legitimate copyright claims. There is no music and nothing to actually claim copyright on in any of the videos uploaded (see bottom). Considering the content of the videos and their ramifications against Hardwell, in a PR sense, for lashing out against the poll in which he was just named the #3 DJ in the world, it makes sense that his team would want to cover this up. In this case, Hardwell’s team has committed an act called ‘copyfraud‘, or filing a false copyright claim, a term coined by Jason Mazzone, a Professor of Law at the University of Illinois. Mazzone states that “copyfraud stifles valid reproduction of free material, discourages innovation and undermines free speech rights.” There’s no doubt that it’s a blatant misuse of the current copyright claim system currently in place on platforms like Facebook and YouTube, and actions like this present a slippery slope toward more egregious forms of censorship. There are ways to fight copyright claims on YouTube, but it’s a long and tedious process that is otherwise not worth it for a video that isn’t even monetized. Strictly speaking, this is bullying and censorship and it shouldn’t be allowed to happen. When the story went live, Hardwell and his team should have put forth a statement on the matter and allowed the rest to take its course. Instead, they conducted an unethical campaign toward censorship that should not be tolerated. We’ve reached out to Cloud 9 and have not heard back at time of publication. Watch the video below while you still can. You can read up on YouTube’s copyright and rights management guidelines here. This article was first published on Your EDM.
