A series of major websites, including Twitter, Soundcloud, Spotify, NY Times, Reddit, Boston Globe, Airbnb, and now apparently Amazon and Etsy, were struck by a major cyber attack on Friday morning, with outages for some users being reported into the afternoon – though many have been seemingly unaffected at all. The DDoS attack was targeted towards DNS provider Dyn, which operates as a bridge between the URLs we type and the IP addresses of the corresponding websites. According to an outage map created by the Down Detector, effects were primarily felt in the U.S., though reached into Europe, as well. As Techcrunch reported, security researcher Bruce Shneier wrote in September that the complexity and weight of current DDoS attacks are becoming more sophiscated. “These attacks are significantly larger than the ones they’re used to seeing. They last longer. They’re more sophisticated. And they look like probing. One week, the attack would start at a particular level of attack and slowly ramp up before stopping. The next week, it would start at that higher point and continue. And so on, along those lines, as if the attacker were looking for the exact point of failure.” According to the White House press secretary, the Department of Homeland Security is currently looking into the Dyn issue. After entrancing thousands of people at Los Angeles’ Shrine Expo Hall last Wednesday, ZHU has unveiled a thrilling short film called GENERATIONWHY. The film was actually premiered for the crowd before Zhu’s show and served as an incredible visual It’s a marvelous cinematic journey that incorporates both disturbing scenes and unbridled play, urging the audience to take a sincere look at their own lives. Directed by American Millennial, it’s no wonder the film’s message and aesthetic are rooted in some deep concepts. “This film is dedicated to those born into lives ruled by fear. It doesn’t have to be this way. The answer may not be easy, but it is simple: never underestimate the power of one.” This article was first published on Your EDM. I never knew I wanted Martin Garrix on the ‘Hot Ones’ challenge so much until I actually saw it, but oh my god, this is absolutely glorious. For those who don’t know, ‘Hot Ones’ is a segment on the First We Feast YouTube channel in which celebrities of all kinds sit with the host in a normal interview – except while they’re talking, they’re also eating hot wings of increasingly intense spiciness. This particular interview was filmed after Garrix performed on The Tonight Show in August, and so that’s why he’s promoting his “new” single, “In The Name Of Love.” If you’ve seen a ‘Hot Ones’ before, you know how this goes. In fact, by the end of the segment, Garrix looks like he’s been on stage for a good hour he’s sweating so much! He answers a few questions from the host, but really ‘Hot Ones’ is about schadenfreude at its core, and we’re not ashamed to admit it. Check out the video below, and we earnestly recommend you watch the whole thing. This article was first published on Your EDM. Back in February, a shirtless man by the name of Patrick McCann was filmed chanting the phrase, “Less Donald Trump, more techno music” aboard a crowded train. The video quickly became an internet sensation, opening the floodgates for prime remix potential. This week, a hilarious techno remix by producer Mr. Finn hit the interwebs, combining a perfect rework of both the audio and video from the initial post. Featuring a thudding kick drum and expertly chopped vocals from McCann, the anthem now rests as the perfect sentiment for the anti-Trump electronic music fan. Check out the Mr. Finn remix below, and revisit the original video further down. This article was first published on Your EDM. It’s no secret anymore: REZZ is a serious force to be reckoned with. She’s making some of the most complex, intriguingly dark tech-house and midtempo out there and she’s caught the eyes (and ears) of the industry’s most renowned tastemakers, most notably, deadmau5. Linking with the same label that backed the likes of Feed Me and Skrillex early on in their careers, REZZ has found a fitting home at mau5trap, marked by the release of her most recent EP, Something Wrong Here. Now, following the release, REZZ has shared her debut music video, which ties together the emerging 21-year-old producer’s aesthetic flawlessly. Her music dominates a convoluted middle-ground between party-primed house and sinister, warehouse-ready techno, and the music video for “Paranoid” embodies that dichotomy perfectly. The video depicts the outcome of what a psychotic episode would be like in the middle of a crowded house party. The imagery that “Paranoid” already invokes in the listener’s mind is totally affirmed as hypnotic hallucinations begin to swirl to the score of REZZ’s stomping, underground tech gem in her debut music video. Another year of DJ Mag’s Top 100 has come and gone, and every time all it seems to do is get the dance community all kinds of hot and bothered, and not in a good way. Everyone from Dillon Francis to Eric Prydz had something to say about the results, with most of the commentary pertaining to the list being a joke. But there were still a few who took the time to congratulate Mr. Martin Garrix on a well earned #1 title. Congratulations @MartinGarrix!!! pic.twitter.com/ClRk7IftlU — Hardwell (@HARDWELL) October 19, 2016 Congrats to the new no. 1 @MartinGarrix! And as such, here are the less satisfied reactions: .@djmag when will you finally exclude me from this? Right off the heels of becoming the new number 1 DJ in the world according to the DJ Mag top 100 poll, Martin Garrix releases “Together” with rumoured future STMPD RCRD’s signees Matisse & Sadko. Martin and Matisse & Sadko have collaborated on an EP in the past, released on Martin’s former label Spinnin’ Records, which saw the release of two anthemic progressive house bangers “Break Through The Silence” & “Dragon.” The 6th out of 7 tracks that he’ll be releasing is titled “Together,” and maintains all the stylistic hallmarks that we saw on both artist’s previous works. “Together” maintains a euphoric uplifting vibe kept throughout the entirety of song, while the vocals also reinforce the positive tone presented throughout the track: “We don’t need much as long as we’re together.” Stream “Together” below! When listening to “Together,” it reminded me of an old track by Nicky Romero & Vicetone from over two years ago. The lead drop melody and structure sounds nearly the same as “Let Me Feel.” This is likely just a case of subconscious inspiration, though it’s still something worth noting. We’ve reached out to Martin’s team but have not received a response at time of publication. Take a listen for yourself below. Tomorrow is the last day of “Garrix week” so be sure to stay tuned in at Your EDM for all the latest updates! And remember, Martin Garrix still has a big announcement coming tomorrow. Yesterday, we ran a story titled ‘5 DJs who actually deserve to win a Top 100 DJ list’ as an answer to the pervading dissatisfaction that inevitably follows every annual DJ ranking list. The response was emphatic. Like us, our readers are fed up with polls such as DJ Mag which clearly do not paint an accurate picture of the dance music landscape. Not only have such rankings become a rampant popularity contest, but they no longer measure actual DJing ability — in fact, as Dillon Francis points out, no one is entirely sure what they measure at all. On the back of yesterday’s feature, where we spotlight the likes of Eric Prydz, Carl Cox, Bassnectar, John Digweed, and A-Trak, we’ve picked 5 more DJs deserving of such a title (once again, in no particular order). Here are 5 more DJs who actually deserve to win a Top 100 DJ list: Richie Hawtin Richie Hawtin has been pioneering cutting edge dance music for over twenty years under the guise of Plastikman and his legendary ENTER. parties. His expansive knowledge of mixing has earned him an honorary Doctorate of Music Technology degree, while his world-class sets never fail to take listeners on transcendent jouneys. Hawtin is a master of conjuring mayhem just to the point of chaos and then reeling it back under control. Wielding both Ableton Live and Traktor in his set up — and beatmatching between the two — his performances have become a glorious spectacle of live techno. Marco Carola Marco Carola is the king of the marathon DJ set. The Italian veteran regularly drops 10 hour+ sets — and if he had it his way, he’d likely play twice that long. His summertime Music On sets at Amnesia Ibiza have become the stuff of dance music legend, and for good reason: when Marco is in his element, there’s no one better. As far as DJing stamina and long-winded techno sets go, Carola is in a league of his own. Paul van Dyk Paul Van Dyk is lovingly known as the “Godfather of Trance” by many fans. As one of the genre’s oldest purveyors and pioneers, the Berlin native is known for his stunning live performances which oftentimes feature a complex live setup comprised of multiple decks, keyboards, and various hardware additions. What’s more, his biggest track, the 1993 classic “For An Angel,” continues to be one of the most played and beloved trance anthems. Having just recovered from a traumatic head injury incurred at ASOT NL, the Vandit label boss is slowly getting back into full swing and continues to captivate his audiences, holding down his reputation as one of the best DJs in the world. Andy C Mixing drum ‘n’ bass is hard enough. Add in four decks running simultaneously and it’s all but impossible –unless your name is Andy C. The English native and RAM Records boss is likely the most venerated drum ‘n’ bass DJ in the world. Having built a steady career over the last twenty years, Andy C consistently makes DJing bass music look like a breeze. Maya Jane Coles A decade has passed since Maya Jane Coles’ entrance into dance music, and she only gets better with time. While already well-known for her pulsating and deep house cuts which she approaches with careful precision, her adaptability behind the decks is even more fascinating. Maya seemingly plays well in any environment, from grungy dark warehouses to tropical outdoor climates. The UK-based femme fatale continually wows her fans with her superb mixing by incorporating multiple musical influences into each of her sets to form a cohesive story. These days, demand for her presence is at an all-time high: Maya has proven herself as one of the most celebrated DJs in the world. For the past several hours, DJ Mag’s yearly Top 100 List has been the only thing on the dance music community’s mind. Scorn and praise are flowing in from all sides, and while most of us are content with choosing sides and weighing the rankings, Dillon Francis is still stuck at the door. In a video posted to his Twitter yesterday, Dillon laid out the full scope of his confusion over the Top 100 List. Despite coming in at No. 64, the king of moombahton said that he has no idea what the list is supposed to be telling him. If it was indicating Best Producers, Daft Punk and Major Lazer’s achievements would put them far higher. (Though to counter one of Dillon’s arguments, Daft Punk’s collaboration with The Weeknd came out just as polls were closing, if they weren’t already.) If it was for Best DJs, DJ Craze and A-trak would certainly be near the top of the list. If it was for pure popularity, he said, then who are half of these people that he’s never even heard of? Of course, it’s pointless in the first place to try and apply rationality to the list, as we’ve been trying for the past few years and failing. Share in Dillon’s confusion and rage by checking out the complete video below. It happens every year @djmag pic.twitter.com/faWDF98gFg — Dillon Francis (@DILLONFRANCIS) October 19, 2016 Ask me anything…I know the answer pic.twitter.com/tpLvb9jALN — Dillon Francis (@DILLONFRANCIS) October 19, 2016 Facebook image by Jas Davis This article was first published on Your EDM. As a millennial, I am fully aware of the immense anticipation that surrounds Halloween. Not only do you get to dress up in stunning costumes that convey your most edgy interests, but you’re basically obligated to take part in some of the biggest parties of the entire year. EDM promotions companies tend to take advantage of this, as star-studded lineups pop up around the entire country, providing you with a mind-blowing Halloween experience. A few days ago, we reported on Diplo being scheduled to play a show at Virginia Tech where seemingly no one knew who he was. Now, after playing last night’s show, the event has received some of the most vicious complaints in the community’s last 30 years, according to Mayor Ron Rordam. He says, “I have been mayor for 10 years and councilman 20 years, and have lived here for 30 years, and have never seen such the number of complaints, the intensity of the complaints.” But the afflicted quotes don’t stop there, Councilmember John Bush is equally upset by the event. “As a town elected official and as a downtown resident I am pretty offended by Virginia Tech’s abuse of it’s state agency designation and its relation to the Town of Blacksburg in having a very very loud bass heavy ‘music’ band party that is disturbing to the peace for folks that have young school age children or otherwise. It appears that our communication with VT officials leaves much to be desired.” Only Virginia Tech students were allowed to attend the event, and the Virginia Tech Event Planning Office has responded to the outcry with assurance that all the details of the production were well within guidelines. “Last night’s event was sponsored by a registered student organization, and was vetted and approved through all relevant university offices on Virginia Tech’s campus … We would like to stress that this event was within both Virginia Tech and the Town of Blacksburg’s approved amplification hours.” Even audiologists explained that changing the direction of the speakers wouldn’t have helped the affects of amplified bass, which was the main offender in last night’s shenanigans, as it was during the Bassnectar “Earthquake” in Colorado. It’s that time of year again: the influx of DJ rankings has begun. Last month, for instance, DJ Times announced America’s Top DJs, and now DJ Mag has released their annual Top 100 list. Is it just us, or are all of these lists unequivocally unsatisfying? It doesn’t help that the majority of these rankings have essentially been turned into popularity contests. What’s more, very few of these lists actually measure DJing ability. Rather, they seem to focus on how big an artist’s brand has become as opposed to actual talent behind the decks. In an effort to shine the spotlight on some of the best living DJs, we’ve created our own list (in no particular order). Here are 5 DJs who actually deserve to win a Top 100 DJ list: 1. Eric Prydz Anyone who’s seen Eric Prydz live can attest, it’s a surreal experience. The Swedish progressive house legend has a tremendous command over the booth; his presence can be felt in every subtle change in the music. You’ll never be hypnotized like you will at a Prydz show. Whether it’s an outdoor festival stage or an intimate nightclub, Prydz knows just how to work the crowd into a frenzy. One of the most consistent — and spell-binding — DJs around, Prydz is a clear standout in the field of mixing. 2. Carl Cox The mighty Carl Cox is one of the best loved DJs around — and for good reason: the man is a machine. At 54 years old, Cox has been obliterating dance floors for over 30 years. A master of multi-deck mixing and a behemoth presence in the booth, Cox is the definition of a living legend. Like a fine wine, his mixing has only grown more exquisite over the years, and he continues to thrive as one of the most in-demand talents in the world. 3. Bassnectar Lorin Ashton, better known by his Bassnectar moniker, has bred a dedicated cult of followers, so much so that in 2016 he earned a permanent residency at Electric Forest and threw his first music festival, Bass Center. What sets him apart from the rest of his peers — outside of his tremendous catalogue of music — is his near-perfect live show, which finds him mashing songs and improvising selections on the fly. Wielding a complex live setup, his DJ sets never fail to excite audiences with their relentless energy and masterful track selection. 4. John Digweed John Digweed has been a dance icon longer than a good portion of his fans have been alive. Breaking out into the UK club scene in the early ’90s, Digweed quickly earned notoriety for himself not just for his impactful club residencies, but also for his pioneering work in progressive house alongside Sasha. These days, the living legend carries on a consistently busy tour schedule each year where he frequently enchants crowds with well thought-out extended sets. His multi-hour performances are some of the best in the business, and Digweed is a veritable master of his craft. 5. A-Trak Reaching a nearly 20-year career milestone in dance music sounds arduous, yet A-Trak has achieved this accomplishment with extreme prowess that includes turntablist talents, various production work, and label management. At the age of 15, he became the youngest winner of the DMC World DJ Championship, and went on to win several more competitions, yielding five World Championships total. Before establishing his Fool’s Gold Records label in 2007, A-Trak served as Kanye West’s personal tour DJ, and even contributed scratching on West’s ’Late Registration’ and ‘Graduation’ albums. Nowadays, A-Trak remains one of the most talented DJs around, both for his unparalleled turntablism and dexterous track selection. Source

In the wake of DJ Mag’s Top 100 list for 2016 freshly off the presses, the yearly outpourings of scorn and condemnation have already begun to seep out of the dance music community. The list is most often criticized for the integrity and skill of the DJs it tends to place near the top, as well as the methods some take to make sure their name is high enough on the pole. In a post uploaded to his Facebook page this afternoon, 3LAU decided to combat the hate with a very particular explanation as to why the same DJ Mag ranking matters so much to those on the list. The main factor? Asia’s burgeoning dance music scene. “When a DJ gets booked in most Asian countries to play a club, their fee is heavily dependent on their DJ mag ranking,” he wrote. Rather than base performance fees on factors like social media numbers, play counts or previous ticket sales history, 3LAU wrote, club owners in Asia are forced to base their judgment about a DJ’s value on the Top 100 list. Because the scene in the region so new, this is one of the only metrics available for them. Adding in the extreme government internet censorship in countries like China that block out fans from experiencing music discovery in the same way as the West, the Top 100 list becomes a necessary beacon to gauge the DJs’ popularity. “So, when the business men and club owners in Asia look to book DJs who might maximize their table / bottle sales revenue, they rely on the DJ Mag chart to assess relative popularity.” For those artists looking to tour in Asian markets, 3LAU wrote, the cost of maintaining a high chart position on the list is worth it when thinking about the probability of increased DJ fees. Keeping this information secret has been a trend among DJs and managers alike due to the prevailing thought that its reveal might affect their future income, he continued. Wanting to be a famous DJ has become one of the most popular trends recently. We hear stories of bedroom producers suddenly blowing up and think it shouldn’t be that difficult. Besides the endless amount of hours it takes to learn proper production, branding is an equal part of the equation. With everyone making music, it’s difficult to standout in an over-saturated field where people are being flooded by bedroom producers wanting to “make it big”. Therefore, we’ve come up with 10 tips to help you get your music heard. Ultra Music Festival 2016 // Photo via Facebook 10) Track Submission Submitting music to us guarantees that we will listen to it and if it’s good, it will get featured on the site. Many of the tracks sent to us have been featured and even if they don’t, they go on our Promoted Section page. To submit a track, click the “Submit Music Here” button below. 9) Email While not the most effective, being able to email your favorite artist or record label could potentially yield massive results. Both artists and labels are constantly scouting for new music and if your tunes are to their liking, it opens up a while new world of possibilities and connections. Victor Niglio told fans how to properly format a promo email: 8) Remix a Popular Track or a Lesser Known Track This can either go both ways. Remixing a very popular song could net you many plays as many people are searching for it and are curious to hear what a remix sounds like. For example, when The Chainsmokers released “Closer” and didn’t upload it to Soundcloud. When you searched for it, only remixes appeared in the search bar. Producers with a very few followers such as GhostDragon gained over 10 million plays since he was the first one to remix “Closer”. On the other hand, remixing a lesser known artist almost guarantees support from them which automatically increases your audience range. 7) Marketing Yourself on Social Media Social media gives artists a platform to not only express themselves but to reach a much larger audience at an accelerated rate. With the 3 big social networks (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter), there are more than enough opportunities to gain a following if you’re active and engage with your followers. Besides posting quality content, be sure to like/comment/repost and continually maintain your pages. 6) Perform Live If you’re an aspiring DJ/producer, then performing live is something you will need to do sooner than later. The earlier you are able to learn the art of DJing, the easier it will become over time. Practicing in smaller venues will remove any stage fright and will put you in the zone for when the time comes that you’re playing at larger venues or festivals. Kayzo Past vs. Present via Facebook 5) Websites for Finding Music The two biggest websites for this are Wavo and Hypemachine. One of the big reasons Wavo helps newer artists is that they run remix competitions. Many artists such as Zedd, Madeon, and others, originally gained their fan-base from winning remix competitions. Hypemachine is a music blog aggregator and have given the fuel for many artists’ careers, most notably The Chainsmokers. 4) Connecting with Other Artists Reaching out to fellow producers gives networking opportunities, collaboration opportunities, and puts your name out there. Start commenting on other artists’ songs and they will most likely return the favor. Building connections is essential no matter what field you’re in but especially in the music industry. 3) FREE Downloads This should go without saying but newer artists are under the impression that making money through music should start on Day 1. As you start to produce and get your name out there, ALL of your tracks should be available for free download – it’s better for fans, and even for artists as it’s more likely to be shared. deadmau5’s Home Studio // Photo via Magnetic Mag 2) Focus on Your Production Before Anything While marketing yourself and getting your name out there is important, the music should always come first. Music-making and production is a learning experience, no matter how far along the path you are. Even the greatest producers are still not even close to reaching their full potential and continually seek out new challenges. 1) Be Friendly, Open, and Honest This is the #1 key. Simply put, you will never go far working by yourself and thinking you’re the best. Be humble, collaborative, and spread positivity. Australia’s Flume struck gold this summer with the release of “Say It,” taken his second studio album, Skin. This track masterfully combined the sensual appeal of Tove Lo — who can back up her seductiveness with incredibly talented vocals — with the ever-intriguing production of one of the top artists in the world, Harley Streten. With such attractive vocals, remixes of “Say It” immediately began to appear all over the internet. Following up a recent stand-out remix from Illenium, Grammy-winning UK crossover band Clean Bandit decided to have a stab at the smash hit. What resulted is a relaxed, semi-tropical groove quite far removed from the original in most respects. Whereas the original has large dynamic changes between the reserved energy of the verses and the epic, breaking-free energy of the chorus, Clean Bandit’s remix stays consistent throughout, leaving the top-notch vocals as the centerpiece of the track — as they should be. Ultra Miami pulled off yet another large feat this past March in booking legendary drum ‘n’ bass band Pendulum to close out the festival’s main stage. The appearance marked the first live performance from the group in quite some time, since their disintegration in favor of their own individual endeavors, namely Swire and McGrillen’s side project, Knife Party. In addition to their booking, the Pendulum website was also rebooted, sparking further hype of new music and possibly a tour in the future. After announcing yet another reunion show in Perth, Australia — their first show in their hometown in five years — hope of their official reunion was officially quelled by Rob Swire in a disheartening Tweet: “It’s a one-off DJ set, because we happened to be in Perth,” the former leader divulged Wednesday morning. Despite such sad news, hopefully their “one-off” reunion will be recorded so that fans can listen frequently until they reunite once again. FYI you can probably ignore all the “Pendulum reuniting” bullshit tweets. Australian supergroup Pendulum have just revealed that they will be returning to their home city of Perth to perform their first show back home in five years. Their last time playing at Origin NYE was in 2008, but they haven’t even been back to Australia since 2011 when they were on the now-expired Future Music Festival tour. The three founding members – Rob Swire, Gareth McGrillen and Paul Harding – will take to the stage this New Year’s for an exclusive DJ set, coming as their only Australian stop of the season. Generally, only Paul Harding – aka El Hornet – performs Pendulum DJ sets with MC Verse. Rob and Gareth’s participation will likely breathe new life into the set, especially with it being touted as a “return to beginnings.” While not quite the reunion fans were likely waiting for, this is still a unique enough experience to make the memory last a lifetime. Earlier this year, Pendulum broke their five-year silence with a live headlining performance alongside the likes of Deadmau5, Hardwell and Martin Garrix at Ultra Miami. Their immense, unforgettable show now serves as a welcome reminder of the group’s caliber and powerful presence on stage. Unfortunately, this is definitely a one-off performance as Rob Swire tweets: FYI you can probably ignore all the "Pendulum reuniting" bullshit tweets. The Chainsmokers were set to make an announcement today as revealed by a countdown timer on their website revealed a week ago. Lots of speculation went into what the announcement would, but as it turns out… It’s a new EP! It’s been nearly a year to the day since their last EP Bouquet came out, but a lot has changed since then. For one thing, they’ve released the three biggest songs of their career: Don’t Let Me Down, Closer, and All We Know. So if nothing else, more eyes than ever will be on them for this release, so they can’t mess it up. In conjunction with announcing the release of the EP, they’ve also given fans a chance to participate in the reveal of the EP cover art. Connect with The Chainsmokers on Spotify and follow their ‘Nice Hair’ playlist to help reveal their upcoming EP cover. The more times fans connect on Spotify, the sooner the EP cover art reveals. Spread the word and let your friends know! As of time of publication, there has been 6% progress in this endeavor, but we don’t expect it to take too long before fans find out about this and go into a frenzy. As of this time, a release date has not been announced, but we expect it before the end of the year. Find more information here.
