This MacGyver-esque clothes peg Piano is a cheap DIY project, created by Adam Kumpf, that turns clothes pegs, aluminum foil and rubber bands into a playable instrument. Here’s a hack that creates a piano interface which tricks the iPad into thinking it’s being played directly by your fingers. All materials together cost less than $5. Full step-by-step instructions are published here Source

It’s normal for icons to have movies made in their honour. Malcolm X, Gandhi, and Johnny Cash have all had amazing films created to chronicle their amazing lives, but now it’s the turn of one of the most iconic, if not the most iconic instrument in dance music. The Roland TR-808 is the soundtrack of my musical heritage — from Electro to Acid and many stops since, the 808 is ubiquitous and to this day continues to be influential across scenes and genres. And now there’s “808” where suitably influenced people honour the lump of electronics that has helped give them careers. Source

Apple quietly rolled out an update to GarageBand for OS X, earlier this week, that adds support for OS X Yosemite and brings back control over audio effect plugins. GarageBand 10 is seen by many as an improvement in usability, but a major step backwards in functionality from the previous version. The update restores some functionality, but many may still prefer the earlier version. Here’s what’s new in GarageBand 10.0.3: • Adds support for OS X Yosemite • Access audio effect plug-ins for more detailed control over the sound of your tracks • Build your own bass rig with Bass Amp Designer using vintage and modern amps, cabinets, and mics • New Voice Template for fast and easy vocal recordings • Share GarageBand projects with Mail Drop • Vertical zoom automatically adjusts the height of your tracks • Contains multiple enhancements to Accessibility GarageBand is available for $4.99 in the App Store. Some potentially sad news reached us this morning as it was tipped off that Vestax Corporation has apparently “ceased operations as of August 31st” (according to a Japanese news source). While unconfirmed, this doesn’t come as a big surprise. Vestax has been noticeably missing from action over the past few years. Lacking any new products at NAMM 2014, the trusted manufacturer was also completely absent from the recent BPM tradeshow in the UK leading many to wonder if a demise was near. A Japanese news organization, Teikoku News Online, has reported: “Indispensable in helping to talk about the music and club scene in Japan, name-brand DJ (disc jockey) for mixer, turntable “Vestax”. Co., Ltd. has ceased operations August 31″ Vestax has been under pressure for years, first with the decreasing value of the Yen, which made it difficult for them to remain competitive in the face of lower cost controllers from Pioneer, Reloop, NI and others. More recently they’ve faced challenges due to their lack of software and ability to compete with those who have software platforms. There is a lot of evidence to support the idea that Vestax has ceased operations entirely: • All of their social media accounts stopped seeing updates in July • Their new LA Vestax “To The Core” store was shut down at the end of August • There were no Vestax reps present at BPM in September • There have not been any new Vestax products released in the past year. • American Music & Sound, Vestax’s US distributor for a number of years, dropped them in 2014 • Vestax’s main support phone number in the US still calls up AM&S No social media updates since mid-July – but the company was posting with weekly regularity for the entire year prior. The LA Vestax store was quietly closed – just a Yelp review reveals it’s absence. Finally, there’s been a lot of secondary confirmations on the Serato forums as well of people learning that the company has apparently gone under: Link to the comment in context on Serato’s forums If true, this would be the end of a very significant era. Our friends in Japan were responsible for many innovations over the years in turntables, mixers, and controllers. Most notably, it was the Vestax VCI-100 which inspired a new generation of DJs to take up DJing using only their laptops. Source

Note: An iLok 2 USB key (not included) is required to use Pro Tools 11 software. Source

The new Kontrol S8 flagship Traktor controller from Native Instruments is finally getting it’s official launch today, and we’ve got an exclusive in-depth video that reviews all the S8 functions in our studios at the bottom of the page. • Retail price at $1199 Dollars/Euros - ~$1140 AUD • Available in stores on October 31st • About 20% larger than the S4 Kontrol S8 Essential Features In a nutshell, the new Kontrol S8 brings the following developments to the table: • Expands the mixer into a fully functional mixer with analogue inputs • Replaces the jog wheels with high-resolution color screens and a touch strip • Merges the X1 and F1 style controllers into a single interface with level controls for Remix Decks • Adds many dedicated buttons for popular features like Freeze, Flux • Introduces touch-sensitive encoders and knobs with matching screen updates Expanded Four Channel Mixer The mixing section is wider and taller and brings a number of dedicated mixer functions to the center console. This sets the S8 apart from the S2 and S4, making it more realistic to use the controller as a dedicated club interface or at least your full-time mixer at home. Along with cross fader assignments and curve and curve, there is a full four channel mixer with CD or Phono inputs. The dual mic inputs can also be assigned to the channels for EQ and gain adjustments, essentially making this a full Z4 mixer. Combined Controls For All Styles Of Decks Instead of owning a F1 and a X1 to control Remix Decks or traditional tracks, this new interface allows you to flex between two deck styles with ease. The four buttons can trigger remix cells, cue points, and also unlocks the popular Freeze mode – which was previously only in Traktor DJ (on iOS). Jog Wheels Make Room For High Powered Screens These screens could allow you to almost entirely put away the laptop and keep attention on the mixer. Detailed browser panes with album art, BPM and key. The Remix Deck implementation is particularly good with a clear view of what is happening with your loops and samples. Touch-sensitive Knobs Team Up With The Screens For Clear Feedback There are now eight touch-sensitive encoders, and 8 touch sensitive potentiometers (knobs with end points) on each side of the mixer which can be used to control all 4 FX units or parameters of the remix cells. When any of the knobs are touched, the screen updates to show you the details of that section in a very clear manner. The traditional knobs above the screen have end points while the encoders bellow are endless. Kontrol S8 Functional Improvements Along with the new features, there are a host of minor updates which could be a big deal for some DJs: • Replaceable faders – with room around them to avoid dangerous accidental button press • Custom fader technology purported to be very long-lasting. • Main out can be XLR out or RCA out • 1/4″ jack booth out • Crossfader assignment and curve adjust • Can work as a standalone mixer but does always requires a power supply to run • Filter On/Off buttons on each of the filter knobs • MIDI in and out for syncing with Maschine and other external music products. Only a few things stuck out to us as being missing in action from the S4/S2 lines: • Loop recorder section is missing - we suspect NI wants to focus on recording into Remix Sets instead on this controller • Tempo faders have been replaced by a master tempo encoder in the middle of the unit – considering most users of this controller will likely sync, it’s not that big of a deal Source

tbh... 'drop' and 'bear' dont come to mind when i see the font u used. and to be honest, lacks a ton of individuality. imo When looking at it, If feels like you did zero to make ur logo stand out from the other 700K dj whales that mix the same tunes. it just has the same generic paint shop feel as so many others.... i hate to be that guy but... maybe spend some more time on it to make it really 'THIS IS DROP BEAR" not. 'you seen this effect 100 times before
