Last summer, Polaris Prize winner Kaytranada released a remix of Gorillaz’s “Stroblite”. The Canadian producer/DJ has returned now with two new reworks — this time taking on icons of the hip-hop and R&B world, A Tribe Called Quest and Sade. He’s also dropped two short original songs of his own. Kaytranada has “edited” Sade’s 1992 Love Deluxe cut “Kiss of Life”, as well as “Midnight” (re-dubbed “The Night is On My Mind”), a track off ATCQ’s 1993 album, Midnight Marauders. In terms of new material, Kaytranada has also shared a pair of untitled tunes that appear to have been written and recorded in March and April of this year. As to be expected from the Anderson .Paak and Syd collaborator, all of today’s releases slink and throb with the same groove and pulse as his excellent debut album, 2016’s 99.9%. Take a listen to all four offerings below. This past spring, Kaytranada teamed up with Robert Glasper for The ArtScience Remix EP. He also contributed to recent albums from Talib Kweli and Bishop Nehru. Source

Hey, did you hear Ariana Grande’s new record, Sweetener, comes out Friday? Ok, we get it. You’re a serious music fan. You love spirited debates over the merits of Sgt. Peppers and The Velvet Underground & Nico, and would rather spend time surfing through the Merge and Barsuk catalogs than go near that new Ariana Grande record. Who needs disposable pop music when there’s so much else to dig into? It’s easy to snobbishly dismiss pop as musical junk food full of empty calories. Some of it is, but the breadth and scope of pop music is such that there’s something in it for everyone, even those of us who insist it’s beneath us. History has shown us countless times that pop music can be both entertaining and artistically satisfying. How else can you explain the catalogs of artists like Prince, David Bowie, and Kendrick Lamar, to name but a few? The world’s full of shallow pop records, but there’s also plenty that can win over even the most petulant of haters. With that, we dove deep into the archives to cherry-pick 10 pop records destined to please those who consider “pop” a dirty word. We tried to hedge as close to the true definition of “pop” as we could, focusing on records with hooks and melodies that burrow into your brain despite your best efforts to fend them off. Let your guard down long enough to give these gems a listen. –Ryan Bray Senior Contributor __________________________________________________________ Blondie – Parallel Lines (1978) Let’s be real: Blondie have always been a pop band. But it took a few records before Debbie Harry and company could fully break out from the mystique of the legendary CBGB scene that spawned them. By 1978’s Parallel Lines, the band were done playing it cool and ready to crossover fully with a bang. Singles like “Heart of Glass” and “One Way or Another” stand up as well today as they did 40 years ago while other tracks keep the band’s rock and roll edge intact (“Hanging on the Telephone”). As it is, the record is the perfect example of a great band having it both ways. – Ryan Bray __________________________________________________________ New Order – Power, Corruption & Lies (1983) Few bands, if any, have successfully walked the delicate line between indie credibility and pop accessibility better than New Order. It’s a balance the iconic Manchester outfit hit perfectly on its sophomore effort. If Movement was a continuation of Joy Division’s brooding post-punk and later records like Brotherhood and Technique played a more aggressive pop hand, then Power, Corruption & Lies is the great go-between. It’s got its foot in both luscious guitar rock (“Age of Consent”) and dance and synthpop (“Blue Monday”), making it perhaps the great indie rock record that successfully dared to court a broader audience. -Ryan Bray __________________________________________________________ Talking Heads – Little Creatures (1985) David Byrne and his cabal of gleeful art-school weirdos may not seem the most logical entry into the pop canon, but Talking Heads are large; they contain multitudes. Following the Heads’ long period of collaboration with producer Brian Eno — the period in which they earned the aforementioned “art-school weirdos” moniker — Little Creatures zigs where you think it might zag. Far from a treatise on ethnomusicology, this is a pop record, plain and simple. Its cover by outsider folk artist Howard Finster depicts Byrne hoisting the weight of the world on his shoulder, but rarely does he sound so unencumbered as he does on buoyant lead single “And She Was”. The clipped, staccato rhythms on tracks like “Perfect World” and “Television Man” aren’t jarring so much as refreshing — the kind of thing you might hear splattered across pop radio in, ahem, a perfect world. –Collin Brennan __________________________________________________________ Kate Bush – Hounds of Love (1985) Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love has everything you might want from a pop record produced in the mid-’80s: heavyweight rhythms, dramatic synth melodies, and a vocalist capable of channeling her talent into an intoxicating mixture of passion and power. But it has so much more than that. Bush literally howls on the title track, which incorporates operatic strings and a massive drumbeat to push the possible of pop music into lands that still sound foreign more than three decades after the fact. Mysticism and melodrama abound here, and while the latter is an expected feature of pop, the former imbues tracks such as “Waking the Witch” and “Hello Earth” with a sublime sense of subversion. Bush bridges the wide gap between pop and esotericism across these 12 tracks, in turn spellbinding the listener and turning the genre’s standard critiques into columns of dust. –Collin Brennan __________________________________________________________ The Magnetic Fields – 69 Love Songs (1999) On first blush, Stephin Merritt’s magnum opus seems almost to make a mockery of pop music and its favorite beat-to-death theme: love. Most “serious” listeners who object to pop music do so on the grounds that there’s something insidious about its presumption of universality, something preposterous about the notion that a song with clichéd lyrics and a clichéd beat can capture anything close to real human experience. Merritt turns that objection into a mission statement on 69 Love Songs, an album that delivers on its title’s promise with 69 genre-spanning odes to love in its many forms. The exercise occasionally comes across as clinical in its sense of detachment, but moments of genuine magic abound. From the silly ( “A Pretty Girl Is Like”) to the subversive (“How Fucking Romantic”) to the surprisingly heartbreaking (“Busby Berkeley Dreams”), this is an ambitious pop album that charms almost in spite of itself. –Collin Brennan __________________________________________________________ Source

If you tuned into Jimmy Kimmel Live on Tuesday night, you caught CHVRCHES perform their thunderous single “Miracle”. Those who were present at the live taping, however, witnessed a complete mini concert in support of the Scottish band’s Love is Dead, and now the whole show can be watched online. The four-song performance included “Get Out”, “Graves”, and “Never Say Die”, all tracks from CHVRCHES’ latest album. Lauren Mayberry quipped about being inappropriately dressed for the Los Angeles weather, so perhaps it was the heat that caused them to stumble through some false starts on “Get Out”. Either way, the band recovered as well as you’d expect and delivered a compact, enjoyable version of their full set. Check it out below. CHVRCHES recently appeared on an episode of This Must Be the Gig to talk about their early touring days and what they like to do on their days off. Revisit that discussion below. New Zealand psych pop singer-songwriter Connan Mockasin has announced a new album, Jassbusters. Set for an October 12th release via Mexican Summer, the record is Mockasin’s third overall but first with a full band. Jassbusters is also a concept album, built around a fictional band of music teachers led by an instructor named Bostyn. In fact, the eight-track effort is designed to be listened to after watching Mockasin’s accompanying five-part melodramatic film about the imaginary musicians, Bostyn ’n Dobsyn. The movie follows Botsyn, played by Mockasin himself, and his prized student, Dobsyn, portrayed by Mockasin’s childhood neighbor Blake Pryor. Taye Digg’s brother Gabriel also makes an appearance. Both the film and album were created in the summer of 2016, with the former being filmed in Los Angeles and the latter coming together at Paris’ Studios Ferber. As a first taste of both, Mockasin has shared the video for the Jassbusters track “Con Conn Was Impatient”, which features footage from Bostyn ’n Dobsyn. Check it out below. Pre-orders for Jassbusters are now live. Find the album art and tracklist below. Jassbusters Artwork: Jassbusters Tracklist: 01. Charlotte’s Thong 02. Momo’s 03. Last Night 04. Digital Garbage is the forthcoming album from Mudhoney, due out September 28th through Sub Pop. The 11-track collection follows 2013’s Vanishing Point and marks the alt-rockers 10th in their 30-year career. Previously, Mudhoney churned out the driving lead single, “Paranoid Core”. Now, the Seattle-bred outfit is back today with “Kill Yourself Live”, which features a line that inspired the album’s title and comments on “the way notoriety goes viral.” Vocalist Mark Arm elaborated: I’m not on social media, so my experience is somewhat limited, but people really seem to find validation in the likes — and then there’s Facebook Live, where people have streamed torture and murder, or, in the case of Philando Castile, getting murdered by a cop. In the course of writing that song, I thought about how, once you put something out there online, you can’t wipe it away. It’s always going to be there — even if no one digs it up, it’s still out there floating somewhere. (Read: The Top 10 Grunge Albums of All Time) Hear the crunchy, nearly five-minute cut below. Mudhoney recently kicked off a North American tour in support of Digital Garbage. Find their full itinerary here. Over the weekend, Arm made a surprise appearance during Pearl Jam’s hometown Seattle concert. Source

July was a busy month for bass releases y’all. We saw some much-anticipated projects finally come to life from industry vets. Several emerging names in the bass game also brought the heat with some fresh new sounds. This month’s playlist choices really showcase the depth of the subgenre. Releases run the gamut from aggressive, face melting bass to dance floor anthems to beautiful chillwave tunes to hip-hop infused wubs to out of this world free form bass and damn near everything in between. Here we go.. EDM Maniac’s picks for the best bass releases from the month of July: Albums and EPs New Reign Artist: Kompany Label: Never Say Die Release Date: July 20 Why it’s dope: Good lord Kompany has gone completely savage with this one. Not to say that all of his other DOZEN releases in the past year aren’t as equally fire as this one but damn. Rapture, the first track of the release, sets the tone of the EP by coming in with a merciless buildup and epic drop in the first 60 seconds of the track. Kompany carries that same neck breaking momentum throughout the entire EP as he closes out with the hype evoking track Stomp. Heartbeat of Hell Artist: Figure Label: Never Say Die- Black Label Release Date: July 13 Why it’s dope: Released on Friday the 13th, Heartbeat of Hell brings all the doom you would expect from a Figure release on Black Label. His signature blaring siren basslines build the base for this EPs arsenal of heavy tracks. All four tracks go hard, but I seemed to be partial to the title track and his collab with Hi I’m Ghost, the finale of the EP. These two, in particular, are pure annihilation of your eardrums and spinal chord, the perfect traits for any bass music fan. While We’re Young Artist: Bonnie X Clyde Label: Independent Release Date: July 13, 2018 Why it’s dope: The duo brought us some pretty amazing summertime anthems from their sophomore EP. A recent press release share that Bonnie X Clyde created this five-track EP “ to remind their fans to believe in themselves, to work hard, but also to never forget to have fun along the way.” The tunes on the EP are inspiring, catchy and fun, yet don’t sacrifice any of their EDM roots to create those vibes. The two are sure to continue to rise to greatness with this release and their adventures after. MANIAC Artist: PEEKABOO Label: WAKAAN Release Date: July 13, 2018 Why it’s dope: This dude’s wasting no time puttin out bangers with his second EP in three months on WAKAAN. But there’s no sacrifice of quality for quantity here, all four track on this release are just as heavy and weird as the next one. “Underpinned by growling basslines and sprinkled with neatly cut chops and samples,” a recent press release stated. “MANIAC is a slice of heaven for those who like their beats off-centre.” If you’re looking for quality new experimental bass music, look no further than this EP. I’m sure PEEKABOO isn’t done with us yet this year… Full Hearts Artist: Pegboard Nerds Label: Monstercat Release Date: July 27, 2018 Why it’s dope: After building up anticipation for a couple days of dropping singles from the new album, Pegboard Nerds finally released their freshest work, Full Hearts. Accompanied by a tour featuring dates at venues all over North American and festivals including Tomorrowland, Audio Sunset and Clustxr, the duo has been bringing these five adrenaline-building tracks to thousands over the past couple months. One notable track on the EP, ‘Purple People Eater’ presents an interesting twist to the 1950s classic; its buildups and basslines are pure chaos. Featuring collabs with big names in the bass game like Knife Party and Dion Timmer, the EP is sure to keep you moving from start to finish. Nova Artist: RL Grime Label: WeDidItRecords Release Date: July 30, 2018 Why it’s dope: After about four years, RL Grime has graced us with a new 15-track album. After releasing a couple tracks from the album in previous months, I had an idea that this release would be like nothing we have heard from him yet. The notorious trap producer switched gears a bit to explore new avenues in his music. The R&B infused tracks on the album combine Grime’s stylings with the vocals of popular names like Ty Dolla $ign, Miguel, Jeremih and more. The solo tracks showcase the growth and progression of his sound design. This album is full of surprises and quality beats in each track, I dig the new Grime. Spy Kidz Artist: Bandlez Label: Disciple Release Date: July 27, 2018 Why it’s dope: Really diggin the stuff that this Philly producer has been putting out this year. This EP is full of four hard-hitting tracks that’ll make you wanna lose your shit. From grimy riddim beats, video game samples and rapid fire breakdowns, Bandlez brings the hype with the first two track on the release. He breaks it down on the second half of the EP with weird vibes and sounds with, “Kyoto Funk” and finale “Festival Puke.” I have a feeling some of these tracks will become popular on the festival circuit the rest of 2018. Don’t sleep on Bandlez y’all, he’s consistently putting out quality tunes and I think he’s far from being done. VOYD- Vol. 1 Artist: SVDDEN DEATH Label: Independent Release Date: July 30, 2018 Why it’s dope: This release is pure savage. Rumor has it Svdden Death has been sitting on a goldmine of tunes for a hot second and if this is only the beginning of what’s to come I think we’re all about to lose our damn minds. This EP is everything that a high-quality riddim release should be. But it’s so much more than just that. His sound design is insane. From twisting up run of the mill EDM beats into ferocious breakdowns in the opening track “Castles,” to grinding primal-tech beats in “Behemoth,” VOYD is absolute genius. Those qualities are not lost in the two collabs completing the EP, if anything, they’re magnified. VOYD also brings us “Rise,” which has no stranger to pk speakers this festival season. The best part about this EP? It’s only Vol. 1, meaning there’s more aggressive wubs coming our way in the future. Yasssss. Note: The full album is not available on Soundcloud so only a couple tracks are included on the playlist. Listen to the full EP here. SINGLES Gold (Stupid Love) Artists: Excision and Illenium Label: Excision Music Release Date: July 17, 2018 Why it’s dope: Let’s be real, every headbanger and illenial had this song on repeat for a good couple weeks (if not longer). This track is beautifully chaotic, flawlessly integrating these two very different styles into one tear jerking, yet head bang evoking masterpiece. It’s a given that when two of Bass music’s top artists get together the result is pure gold. But even knowing that, this song still continues to blow my mind every time I listen to it. Slown Artist: Patches O’Malley Label: Released by TheUntz.com Release Date: July 31, 2018 Why it’s dope: One of the fresher faces on this month’s review, the Michigan native really shows that less is more with this minimalistic track. It’s a great tune to really vibe out too; with its ominous sound, grimy snares and deep basslines. It’s very different from what’s out there recently, which is what I think makes it stand out. Give the kid a follow and keep an eye on him. I think/hope we can expect some more deep bass goodness from him. Dreamin Artist; Seven Lions Label: Ophelia Release Date: Jul 13 Why it’s dope: Not all bass music has to be rage-evoking and heavy. And in a lot of those instances, that’s where Seven Lions comes in. This track, released on Seven Lion’s imprint, is just plain gorgeous. His ethereal sound design and melodic vocal choices never cease to amaze me. The buildups sink down a bit to really showcase those vocals before coming back with that signature, earth-shattering Seven Lions drop. Absolutely stunning. Hypnosis Artist: SubDocta Label: Fresh Blood Release Date: July 17, 2018 Why it’s dope: I keep seeing this name popping up everywhere in today’s bass realm, and it’s always for damn good reasons. With his second release on Fresh Blood, SubDocta brings us a tune that’s captivating, deep and erie in all the best ways. The song opens with a blood-curdling buildup with deep vibrations before dropping into heavy, hypnotizing grooves and basslines. After seeing him throw down at Big Dub Festival this past July, I can personally attest to the fact that he’s an artist you’ll want to watch closely over the next few months. Neurological Artist: Caspa Label: July 27, 2018 Release Date: Sub Soliders Why it’s dope: Probably one of my favorite parts of 2018 so far has been the full force return of the British producer. Oh how the bass game missed those filthy, grimy UK beats. Neurological really showcases Caspa’s signature sound combined with his exploration of other vibrations. The slow progression in the ominous track proves that this kind of bass music can have just as much impact as the high energy stuff. It maintains that heavy energy throughout the whole track before concluding with the sounds of rainfall and a clap of thunder. In Your Head Artist: G Jones Label: Illusory Records Release Date: July 30, 2018 Why it’s dope: The track is just a small dose of what we can expect from the producers forthcoming album, set to drop this fall. G Jones has this absolutely disorienting way of captivating listeners from start to finish in his tracks and “In Your Head” is no exception. His vigorous take on the experimental domain of bass music shows through in this track. The aggressive, glitchy track with robotic vocals is enough to make your ears bleed, and I mean that in the best possible way. Pop Rocks Artist: YOOKiE & Jameston Thieves Label: Independent Release Date: July 24, 2018 Why it’s dope: If you love those super out of the box, “genre-defying” collabs, Pop Rocks is bout to be your new jam. “Someone told us a while ago that they missed our ‘alien sounds,’” explained brothers Anthony and Chris Alfaro, who most may know as YOOKiE. “So we got together with the most extra-terrestrial creature we know and made Pop Rocks.” The track is infused with so many different elements it’s almost hard to keep up with as it throws listeners through loops of deep bass lines, “twanging riffs” and fun samples. Like one of the samples say, it’s sure to make you feel like you have a mouth full of pop rocks. The post July’s Top 15 Bass Releases appeared first on EDM Maniac. Source

It’s fair to say that Meghan Markle’s Dad was the face of the common person during the Royal Wedding bonanza, a simple bloke who’s daughter was marrying into royalty and old mate thought he had absolutely lucked out. However, everyone stopped feigning admiration for him when it was found that Thomas Markle had conspired with the paparazzi to stage some photos in the lead up to the big wedding, a massive royal no-no. “Harry told me that I should never go to the press,” Thomas said. “That it would end in tears.” He was absolutely bloody right because the press tore into the poor bloke so badly that he opted to not walk his daughter down the aisle, blaming it on an alleged heart attack. Not long after, Thomas recieved a call from the Prince that essentially went like, “You’re a fucking idiot, if you did what I told you we wouldn’t be knee-deep in this shitfest that you’ve manifested for us.” To which Thomas so elequently and maturely replied,”Maybe it would be better for you guys if I was dead … then you could pretend to be sad.” … and then he hung up. He later admitted that Harry was totally right and he fucked up, but he’s still sick of all the press. “I’m not mad at Harry. I’m not mad at Meghan. I love them. I wish them well. But as for the rest of it, f*** it. I’m done.” Source

We can always expect trance legend Markus Schulz to produce the unexpected. Schulz has finally released his most summery track yet. Just yesterday, he showed the world “Upon my Shoulders” which features Capital Cities’ Sebu. This song perfectly exudes his magical touch of trance while also bringing in a touch of pop rock in the chorus. Although us fans usually don’t know the stories behind these wonderful tracks, were lucky to have a small inside scoop of where the idea for this record came from. The idea came shortly after his mainstage set at Tomorrowland over a year ago. Schulz states, “As a DJ, when you look out across an audience like Tomorrowland’s and you see hundreds – thousands maybe, of people carrying others on the shoulders. It’s a powerful and stimulating and unifying sight, which sparks the imagination endlessly. Every one of those guys & girls has a connection with the other – a friendship and a story that – very likely – goes way, way beyond the physical bounds of the event. That thought, along with that unbeatable ‘upon your shoulders’ / ‘nothing can touch me’ feeling became something I really had to capture in a piece of music”. In terms of finding the perfect voice for the soundtrack, Schulz knew he had a voice in mind but he couldn’t put a finger on the name. He focused solely on the lyrical touch of the singer and a connection to the main theme of the song. While in Los Angeles with this crew, he heard the song “One Minute More” by Capital Cities’ come on the radio, and immediately realized. He knew the voice he was looking for was right in front of him, and that was the voice of frontman Sebu of the duo Capital Cities’. Schulz was just announced as a phase 1 headliner for Groove Cruise 2019 which will take off from his hometown in south Florida in early January. ” Upon my Shoulders” is the first song off his upcoming LP We Are The Light. I’ve attended HARD Summer festival in 2014 and 2016 and this year has to be my favorite hands down. Now that the festival is produced by Insomniac Events, the production and infrastructure compared to previous years was a huge improvement. Once again, HARD continued to bring top of the line headliners from rap to electronic music. The heat was at an all time high this year however, attendees were greeted by plenty of shade structures, cooling fans, and 5,000 feet of misting lines inside “Shady Lane” – the pathway going across the Speedway that kept people under the shade and cool. Compared to the last time I attended HARD, kandi, LED flow toys, totems were not allowed so it was a totally different feel and vibe this year with all those things present this time around. It definitely felt like more of a rave than a regular festival this year. It even had a couple attractions including a ferris wheel and bumper cars. My favorite sets of Day 1 has to be Sullivan King, Fisher, and Zeds Dead b2b Jauz. All in all fans were pleased with all the sounds emitting from the five stages as you walked from one stage to the next. The Corona Electric Beach stage was also a personal favorite of mine. Great vibes all around while dancing in the sand. Day 2 was another hot day. Fortunately, for those who had VIP this weekend they had a huge pool where people were able to dance and stay cool while listening to beats from the stage. From what I heard this year, VIP was totally worth it. Photo: Tony Nungaray I stopped by to check out The Purple Tent and it was in full force with rap and hip-hop with a crossover of electronic music taking the stage as well. The Pink Tent threw down and was popular this day with DIRTYBIRD artists taking the stage including Sacha Robotti, Will Clarke, and the debut of ESCAPADE (Walker & Royce and Ardalan). I ended the night with Diplo b2b Dillon Francis and quickly walked over to the other side of the Speedway to catch the SoCal debut of Virtual Self. Both sets drew in large crowds and were a personal favorite of mine for the whole weekend. Photo: Drew Ressler HARD Summer 2018 consisted of top notch stage production, misting structures and “Shady Lane”, free water refill stations, and more. The vibes, creativity in outfits and totems, and a little bit of PLUR made HARD a memorable event. Can’t wait to see what HARD has in store for 2019! It’s no secret that Australia probably has the most relaxed stance on using the word ‘whale’ in casual conversation than any other country in the world, just drop a c-bomb overseas and you’ll see people’s faces twist in horror. While our care-free dropping of the c-bomb might not be something that many other countries are keen to replicate, New Zealand are having a red hot go as Greens co-leader Marama Davidson reckons it’s time to take the stigma away from saying it. At a recent anti-racism rally, she said the word on three separate occasions and had absolutely no remorse. “That word is a powerful word for women and shouldn’t be used as abuse,” Ms Davidson says. I mean, using that logic you could argue that we need to reclaim “dick” because it’s only a sexual organ, however true that may be there are certainly correct situations to use it in. Pop culture plays a massive role in deciding what is acceptable to say and do in society, so maybe leave cultural dialogue to that sector instead of a politician trying to convince the general public what they are allowed to say. However, New Zealand’s attitude is certainly changing towards the word. Five years go, 72 percent of people surveyed thought the word was unacceptable in all scenarios, but this year that statistic is only around 63 percent. It’s still a fairly high percentage of the population, but Davidson is confident that a new generation will come through who don’t see the word as taboo. As to why this is a pressing political matter that deserves undivided attention, no one really knows. Source

Sometimes, a bowl of yoghurt and granola doesn’t quite cut it in the morning and you require the artery-clogging glory that is a Big Mac before you start going about your day. Previously, you would have had to wait for a suitable time before you could dive into your deep-fried fantasies, but thanks to the great glowing Golden Arches you can now grab your menu favourites at any time of day. The updated menu includes the Big Mac, Chicken Nuggets, Quarter Pounders and fries, so now you’ll be able to load up on your daily intake of trash food before you’ve even got to work, bonza! The initiative was previously rolled out in Tasmania, Victoria, Newcastle, and Adelaide where it saw huuuuge success so they’ve decided to roll it out nationwide. The new menu is available instore, through delivery and drive-through, so get stuck in. Source

When I’m old and grey, I’ll look back on this period in my life with extreme fondness as I recall being an absolute pest in the club smoker’s at 3 am and going full on festival-mode while surrounded by my nearest and dearest. However, if these two old fellas are anything to go by, I could very well be partying hard until I dance my way to the grave, tinnie in hand and jaw going in a completely different direction. Two elderly German blokes recently escaped their nursing home, went to a heavy metal festival and were eventually found at 3 am going absolutely off their chops. Although when they were found they were a bit dazed and confused, “They obviously liked the metal festival,” police spokeswoman Merle Neufeld told public broadcaster Norddeutscher Rundfunk. Thankfully, after a bit of persuading the care home was able to organise a lift home for the old fellas after the police had picked them up. Over 75,000 people turned up to Wacken Open Air, a legendary heavy metal festival that’s often lauded as the best in the world. Headline acts included Danzig, Judas Priest, Hatebreed, In Flames, Running Wild, Arch Enemy, In Extremo and Eskimo Callboy… and if that sounds like someone hopped on a heavy metal name generator and kept pressing go to you, then I’m glad I’m not the only one. It’s normal that when something grabs the attention of the mainstream, people become obsessed with becoming the best which in turn leads to some intense units taking things way too far. We’re seeing the manifestation of that with this new Fortnite craze, as people are practically throwing their money at specialised coaches to help them last longer than landing at Titled Towers and copping a shotgun to the face. According to the Wall Street Journal, parents are hoping to cash in on the esports craze and create their very own Ninja, or at the very least someone who can shit on the other kids at school. One mother from England said she was paying for lessons so her son would stop getting roasted at school, which in itself is pretty fucking hilarious. “There’s pressure not to just play it but to be really good at it, you can imagine what that was like for him at school.” The number one rule about fads is that they’re just that, fads. While Fortnite has definitely managed to crawl it’s way into many people’s daily routines, and could potentially have significant lasting power, at the end of the day kids are going to find something else to get stuck into eventually. It’s only a matter of time. Source

After the New South Wales Police announced that they would be stopping anyone from entering a festival if a sniffer dog sat next to them – regardless of whether they actually had drugs or not – it felt like time was running out on such an evidently inefficient drug strategy. And now, reports are emerging that perhaps rewarding dogs for finding drugs might not actually be the best method of consistently finding drugs and fixing the issue at hand. According to new official police figures released after questioning by Greens MP David Shoebridge, the number of general searches in New South Wales amounted to 10,224, with 3954 deemed successful for a 61 percent failure rate. On top of that, 1124 people were strip-searched because of a dog indication in 2017, drugs were found just 406 times – a failure rate of 64 percent meaning that 718 people were searched despite having nothing on them. Mr Shoebridge, who runs the party’s Sniff Off campaign, said: “These aggressive searches are all about PR, about the police being seen to do something on the failing war on drugs.” “Any other government program that gets it wrong almost two-thirds of the time would be immediately halted.” Unsurprisingly, Police wasn’t tracking how badly this policy would impact the taxpayers’ pockets. With so much seemingly going wrong with sniff dogs, it’s becoming blatantly obvious that it’s about time to pack it in. Source

Sometimes the internet can be a wholesome vehicle of change, one that looks to fund important life-saving surgeries or reunite long-lost relatives with their worried families. However, there are also times when things crawl from the semen-stained depths of the darkest places on the internet to catch our attention, and one of those things is the porn version of Fortnite: Fortnut. On top of having one of the most creative porn parody names in recent memory, it also boasts a wide range of much-loved skins, and I’m not talking about condoms! Fortnut is a parody brought to you by the fine people at WoodRocket, who responsible for such family-friendly favourites such as Oversnatch, Dragon Boob Z, and Metal Rear Solid: The Phantom Peen. Judging from the trailer, it’s somewhat hard to see if this is a serious stab at a Fortnite parody or not, as it looks like the manifestation of a horny 15-year-old’s wet dream that’s been captured on screen. Complete with fucking llamas, flying dildos and cringey one-liners that will destroy any ounce of sexual attraction you have in your body, Fortnut promises to be one of the highlights of your future shameful wankfests. Fortnut is currently out on the world wide web, so if you’re keen to hear more amazing clapbacks like “I guess the money you spent on skins should have been spent on not dying in the first few minutes of the game, dick,” then I suggest you get on it.
