  1. VDJ Basic allows you to split it into left/right, where left is channel 1 (left deck on screen) and right as channel 2 (right deck on screen). That's what I use, I agree it's much easier to use a hardware mixer than a mouse on software.
  2. +rep. Now you've made me want to buy some of those damn lights
  3. Taking them to court so I can't discuss the details just yet, will keep you posted though.
  4. Got a couple of suggestions here. Firstly, Sound waves travel in a waveform and if you're playing inside, those waves reflect off surfaces and cause points where the sound will be louder than others. However, as the frequency of bass in music is ever-changing, you can not really find out where these sweet spots will be (the wavelength is related to the frequency, and the "sweet spot" depends on a ratio between the distance from the speaker and the wavelength of the bass note, etcetc year12physics omg.) Bass refracts much more easily than treble, so someone behind a speaker system will always hear more bass in an enclosed room than treble. My personal solution is Etymotic Research ER-20 Reusable earplugs. They cost about $20-25 off ebay ($30-35 at your local store), and are a blanket -20db reduction in noise levels. Since I began using these a few months ago, I have got substantially fewer headaches and substantially less ringing in my ears after gigs.
  5. As mentioned, virtual DJ is a great piece of software. It is very easy to create small loops and do simple mixing for mobile DJ purposes - also alot easier carrying a laptop rather than decks and cds or vynil when you also have to take speakers, lights, etc. As I do mostly weddings, I find I don't even need to mix most stuff live, however, when doing 18ths, 21sts, etc, I use vdj with an external mixer (I think the $99 US version) as I like to have all the faders and buttons in real life rather than using a keyboard. However, If you don't have a mixer, I would advise considering the purchase of a hardware midi controller (From $300 for a behringer BCD3000) which all come bundled with software. While it may be Traktor, it has similar features and some argue it is better. But keep in mind the VDJ version that works with MIDI costs $300 by itself. From what you've said in other threads, it sounds like virtual software will be the best way to get going. It also allows you to buy MP3s from sites like bigpond and use those rather than buying cds and paying the APRA CD to MP3 license.
  6. Don't work for them. They still owe me $1000 in gigs I've done on their behalf.
  7. http://210.247.177.162/IgnitionSuite/up ... 010709.pdf information on the tarrif; http://www.ppca.com.au/New-Customers.html to sign up.
  8. I'll rip this apart line by line - it might take you a little while but these costs are pretty reasonable if you out lay and tehre is demand you will make your money back in a few months. Otherwise, would us other DJs have jobs? Not necessary unless you want a trading as name $25 for 2 years - www.ventraip.com.au This is free and if you want to be able to invoice people it's necessary and, well, the law - www.abr.gov.au pretty easy to diy Only if you turn over more than 75k/year - not an issue, and if it is, you can do it yourself too Bankwest offer a free one, but only need this if you use a trading as name, otherwise people will make cheques, etc, out to your name and you will be able to cash cheques yourself Again this is only apparrent due to GST obligations if you turn over lots, otherwise, its just a sole trader thing on your personal income tax return which is simple $200/year from the PPCA If it's a legit cd, you're fine, if it's a burnt cd, you should be paying for your music anyway For $5000 insurance, action entertainment insurance charge about $400/year I'd advise getting this unless some kid has a seisure from your strobe light - $800 a year again through action There's plenty of computer science uni students who would do this for you for next to nothing - pm me if you want some of their details Surely you can do it yourself? all it is is an agreement to pay contract www.vistaprint.com.au; $25-30 for 250 cards with quite a useful design it yourself system Most entrepreneur crash courses suggest to do market research before entering a business venture - but lets face it, most companies these days overcharge so as long as your pricing is reasonable and you advertise well you will get business Or you can always sell your gear on adjf If you look at it all as a problem then of course it will look daunting - but rest assured there are answers and plenty of people on adjf to help you
  9. As in title - need another eq, just thought i'd check if aynone was selling to do us both a favour (in perth btw - happy to pay for courier if it's a reasonable price though!) PM or 0433 581 481!
  10. oh also dennis your buddy at showco has had his website suspended
  11. Went fine thanks, i have a 2ru amp which has its own fan in it and a 2ru equaliser sitting on top. As long as both the front and back are off i havent had any overheating problems (of course, i wouldn't dare use it with only the front off! Most amps today don't have any trouble as long as they have good front + back airflow. I suppose the issue is for club installs where there are multiple amps lined up and an enclosed area where the hot air circulates.
  12. it will be when i get around to uploading it! it's an mp4 atm.
  13. how do i post vids? i've got one from a gig last weekend
  14. that's sick. i've always wanted to learn how to use dmx. it bedazzles me. haha
  15. pill

    hello

hello there, i'm also in perth, welcome!
  16. I would personally reccommend going for passive speakers in order to seperate components, i.e., if the amp blows, you can hire another and still use your speakers rather than losing an amp and a speaker if an active speaker blows. You'll find that most clubs and permanent installs use passive speakers for this reason. I beleive this also allows you to get much more powerful amplifiers as they can be alot larger if they do not need to fit in the back of a speaker cabinet. That being said, as Sourceraver has pointed out there are some very good active speakers, I personally love using mackie SRM1500 or 1800 powered subwoofers. However, cheaper 18 inch passive subwoofers coupled with a powerful amplifier and an appropriate crossover system can also sound very good at a lower cost. Also, active speakers will of course take up a smaller space and therefore be easier to transport. One example: JB Hifi sell Audioline PA Speakers. Their 15 inch active model with a built in amp, in my opinion, sounds no where near as good as the 15 inch passive model with my peavey 8.5C amplifier.
  17. Hi Amicus, I think i ran in to you in another thread but welcome and if you have any q's feel free to ask, i run a mobile dj business here in perth as well.
  18. Sorry misread ya - give me a call on 0433 581 481 and I can swing you to a few places about good lighting hire in WA Places like matrix and thunder & lighting are ridiculously overpriced.
  19. Amicus, Welcome - I'm also in Perth - never know might run in to ya. You only need the APRA/AMCOS license for copying or transcoding music from cd to mp3. They have a blanket license that's about $800-900/year that covers that. If you are not changing the format of any of your music you'll be right. Anyways good luck and give us a shout if you have any questions about cheap places to get gear etc, found somewhere awesome for hiring gear last week.
  20. Hey man, You'll find most 30 year olds etc will still be in to more recent dancey music so the 90s might be somewhere to keep an eye on as well - I found a jukebox website with the top 10 from each year in the 70s, 80s, 90s etc which is great when doing a gig for an audience you're not familliar with. If you are in perth there are much cheaper places than going to matrix as well, just let us know and I will get you their details. For your background music for that age I'd suggest the less popular or less upbeat classics from 80s-90s etc. You'll probably find they are all up for the more dancey classics (thriller etc) once they've had a chance to have a few beverages. Also some punctuation in a massive post wouldn't go astray. Cheers
  21. i like rugs. although 'dj rugs' doesn't sound too bad it just seems that people bail on the whole 'i'm a dj' thing these days cause any kid with bitorrent and an ipod is ripping off our industry =(
  22. Hey guys just wondering if anyone from over east has dealt with Atmosphere DJs and if so what you thought of them, from their website they seem pretty big over there
  23. of course, I'm just saying its annoying when there's one whiny person that keeps saying next song like they are the one in charge of the function (when normally they're a straggling aunt invited out of pity that no one really wants there)
  24. I'll start: How annoying is it when some drunk bitch gets upset because a song that everyone usually loves has some negative correllation to her (probably slutty) youth and squeals "next song" on the dance floor until the mood is completely ruinied? (i dont know about you but in general i have a "if a song starts it finishes" policy
  25. well, essentially, you said it. technically, any cd you buy is covered by that same little excert from that aria publication that tells us Itunes and bigpond songs can't be played in public legally without a licence. that is where the PPCA licence comes in. As i've previously mentioned, any venue that plays music from a record company licenced by the ppca (hairdresser, school, nightclub) has to have their own license, and you dont need one. as a DJ, you need one if you are performing at a venue that does not have one of these licences, whether you use cds, downloaded music (assuming it's legal, because otherwise, well, ...) or vynil. and the aria licence covers format shifting. one thing that i think would be interesting would be the legal implications of some of the digi download sites that allow you to have it on multiple computers and if you would be allowed to do this in a business situation... eg apple home sharing, or bigpond which i beleive allows you to have it on 3 pcs...
