Musical theory?

Is it important to have prior knowledge of musical theory while producing. I'm beginning to use Ableton and was wondering about the whole key system? I know you can't just throw all the keys together and expect them to sound good but where do I learn about what sounds good? Thankyou in advance.

To be honest it would help heaps if you have some knowledge but you can get by to begin with just by going with what sounds right.

Generally if it sounds like it works together then it should be fine. If something is out of key it will sound out of place.

there are video's on youtube explaining music theory and also a host of site explaining it too. Dont have any at hand but just do a quick search and your bound to find something.

Also I'm not using a MIDI controller, just my laptop and that's it.

It's like building your own house. Unless you are a trade qualified Carpenter or have a tonne of life experience you will struggle and make heaps of mistakes along the way.

Soo my rough understanding.. Not sure if I'm right or not. Basically I can put the keys on the white lines within this octave? Am I correct or is there more to it than that?

If you're writing in c major then yes, it uses all the white keys.

Other keys use different combinations

There is lots you can learn. You don't need to know it all to begin production. However this isn't the kind of thing you pick up overnight, so if you really want to do it, just stick at it bud.

I've never learnt anything to do with keys but I have a midi keyboard and (in my opinion) can produce stuff without a problem.
