Hey Guys, Took a few of your comments on from my debut mix, and thought i'd have a bit of a crack at putting something else together, let us know what you reckon. The main purpose for these is just feedback for improvement so please comment with your thoughts, where i can make it better, improve technique etc. Recorded in traktor using mixtrack pro (Hopefully that embeds properly) Cheers guys

I also own this controller for me to learn on, I have found it great to learn on. The main things I don't like: - As you mentioned, pitch sliders are pretty short, and sometimes find myself one notch out when beatmatching, which makes me lead to 'cheating', by looking at the tempo numbers on the screen after i have beatmatched to make sure it isn't that one notch out. I don't like this, as I consider it a bad habit to myself while learning. - I also think the track select dial works the wrong way, but you get used to it kinda quickly. Foolish, there is a mapping available that changes the eq kills back to their standard (and originally intended) function as hot cues, can download it here: http://traktorbible.com/freaks/_downloa ... spx?id=138 Otherwise have found it great to learn on for the price, and will get me by until i purchase turntables/cdjs later this year (just holding off til i finish school so i don't distract myself too much lol).

nice article wazza - essentially confirms that practically everyone on here won't be upgrading to lion for a litle while at least lol
-
They have only been discontinued for the general public to purchase, however they are still available to educational institutions for purchase. The macbook airs, along with the mini's, have been spec and price updated accompanying the launch of lion. And a new Cinema Display with thunderbolt

Where does live mixing with a midi controller come into it?(not using sync of course). Guess it's not premix therefore more like CDJs than ableton.. I would mix it on cdjs if I had access to some but limited to midi controller ATM ha. I Think mrchris is onto something, submit a list of what gear and software was used, along with any automation features used in the process. However the bottom line is you don't want to let the judging / criteria get too technical and detract from the mix itself, as what really matters is the music, coz that's why we all do this at the end of the day, right?
-
I'll second what mrchris has said. For general advice we can help, but for a specific business requirement best to get someone to look at your exact situation and give you a few options. Because With technology in business, reliability is key

Heard good things about the Mac mini's with the dual hard drives. If You wanted/needed something a bit more beefy you could also go the Mac pro with extra hard drives which is a good option as far as backups etc. Go. And the future proff-ness of it. Alot of businesses use windows server 2008 and I'd say it's probably the standard atm. as for which one to choose, it's tough without knowing more details.. What are the client PC's running? If the software you are deploying through the server is for windows you kinda need to stick with a windows server, I don't think you can manage windows software on a Mac server?

UPDATE Released on Mac App Store, $31.99 Apple have apparently also announced they will be available to purchase from Apple online store on a USB key and shipped out to you (however expect to pay around $70). Not updating myself, but will try get some more info on app compatibility for Traktor, Ableton, and other programs alot of us on here use, as well as some info about stability of the whole system.

I may not even buy it yet, as my laptop is the 2007 MBP. Its definately capable of running it, (Core 2 Duo 2.4 ghz, 6GB RAM) but not sure how it will like the visual effects due to the graphics card not being anything too fancy by these days standards, and it doesn't have a multi touch trackpad, which lion is very focussed around. I might wait for a while and see what others say before I buy it. Then install on an external drive, and run it off that for a while and gradually customise it to my liking. Then if i think it will run well enough for prime time, ill copy that external install across onto my internal drive. This is what I did last time i had to reformat my internal drive, worked fairly well.

ive used a range of different linux distributions. I'd definately recommend ubunutu over windows for one of those mini laptops. A netbook isn't going to be doing anything too intense anyway, and ubuntu has all the software you'd be familiar with, e.g.: -openoffice -firefox etc.

lloyd, there is a site with tested apps for compatibility for lion: http://roaringapps.com/apps:table Ableton 8.2.2 is marked as compatible with Lion - http://roaringapps.com/app:184 Early on looks like people were having trouble, but apparently they have updated it to work with Lion. I suggest you all check your programs will work on the above site before taking the plunge, as well as backing up everything

Apple have just announced that OS X Lion (10.7) will be released July 20 (in America, so 21st for us Aussies). It brings over 250 features, including: -Full screen apps -Launchpad, an ios way of viewing installed applications -Mission control (redesigned expose and spaces into one window) -Resume, a feature that opens up applications that were open when you shut down your computer -Versions, an auto save feature that saves multiple versions of documents your working on, and the ability to revert to any of these versions -redesigned mail app -Push notifications for mac app store -new multitouch gestures (for compatible trackpads, most 2008 and newer macs should support?) All new features can be found at: http://www.apple.com/au/macosx/whats-new/ Price: $32 OR $30 - not exactly sure yet. Who's planning on upgrading?

^What beatless said, i'm fairly sure a soundcard won't work without power to it. So to switch from a timecode setup to a standard non-laptop setup you'll need to unplug the audio 4 and then plug your CDJs straight into the mixer. However you can play normal CDs on the CDJs within a timecode setup i believe. But you need the laptop plugged into the soundcard, then just set it to through mode or something along those lines. Or if you don't want to unplug cables to switch between setups, Lurk6r's solution will probably work, but haven't seen anything like that myself
-
can use a 3.5mm splitter. You'll only get sound in one ear of your phones obviously though. or you can buy a usb sound card
-
well in that case you could: -buy serato and have a timecode setup similar to what you had. -sell your CDJs, and get something such as the 900's and use them with recordbox. -burn all your music to CDs
-
Another trick I found was once you have cued the next track and have it playing, turn up the cue mix on the headphones and makes it easier (for me) to beatmatch having both tunes in the cans. Not sure how many people do it like that but it helps i think when your learning.

I was under the impression that the LAN cables went from the CDJs to a hub, then hook the computer into that hub? I didn't know you could hook them together directly. By the looks of the diagram in this page here, you can use one USB device in a CDJ and use lan to connect everything up to the DJM 2000, and they can all access that USB. http://instructions.prodjnet.com/im/rek ... _4_en.html But I don't own one myself, just been looking on the net.
-
you don't even need usb sticks, you can connect your lappy as well Is that with timecode though? I thought only the 900's and 2000's had LAN connections for use with recordbox? And the other models you had to just use USB sticks or timecode discs with serato/traktor

yet another double post by Jaz wait are you on windows or mac? Either way think around 08-09 and newer the macbooks have built in SD on the side anyway. And yer just copy the save files from one card to the other and should work (assuming Jaz is correct, don't own Pioneers). Although if you only have one SD slot just make a you'll obviously just have to make a folder on desktop, copy it into there, swap the cards over and copy it back on and you should be sweet. Make a backup of both cards before you do it incase something goes haywire

My very basic setup. Will be upgrading towards end of year. Didn't want to invest too much upfront in case i didn't enjoy it. MBP Core2Duo 2.4, 6GB RAM, 500GB HDD + a few external ones sitting there. Mixtrack Pro + Some creative tape for the sync buttons Sennheiser HD 25-SP ii headphones Benq24" Monitor A Sony sound system i inherited (as the surround speakers don't work anymore, just use it in 2.1 mode.) PS3 for watching DVDs, recording TV and shooting peeps when you need a break iPod classic - bought yesterday haven't set up yet.
-
@ johbremat awesome setup you have going there man! same with mattus, some good quality equipment there. Better than mine anyway *EDIT* 100th post, fuckyer!
-
pretty sure if you have 850's or 350's as well you can use recordbox to prepare USB sticks for sets as well. What CDJ's do you have ?
-
just buy a itunes voucher you can buy all the bounce remixes for like 6 bucks on there
