Two weeks before Aphex Twin drops his first new LP in 13 years, the electronic musician born Richard D. James has revealed "minipops 67 [120.2][source field mix]," the first cut from his upcoming Syro. Don't let that strange song title scare you: The first thing you'll notice, besides the fact that James' talents haven't dulled in the least, is that the 13-year hiatus helped Aphex Twin reconnect with his more melodic side. Whereas much of 2001's Druqks was dissonant and avant-IDM, "minipops 67 [120.2][source field mix]" opens up sounding like a more matured variation of James' early accessible tracks like "Delphium" and "Alberto Balsalm" before its breathtaking, mellower second half takes over. The other noteworthy characteristic about "minipops 67": Vocals, or at least something that resembles a voice that's been masked and processed. James has only employed his voice on a handful of tracks in his extensive catalog – notably on songs like "Come to Daddy" and "Milkman" – so it's interesting to hear him use the heavily distorted vocals layered almost as an additional instrument, much like he did on "Windowlicker." Rolling Stone spoke to James recently about how he feels about the new album. "Horny. I'm feeling really horny about it. And very smug," the musician said. Although Syro arrives September 19th, Aphex Twin is already looking toward his next release. "I'm in that mode now, so hopefully I'll stay in it for a while," James said. "I've got a few more things planned – at least a couple more albums, some EPs, things like that. Some more dance-y things I did about 10 years ago. Experimental things, noise things, weird things. Shitloads of stuff. They're all pretty much ready to go." Source

He's such a weird character. He comes off as someone that just doesn't care about the scene. And he must be sitting on hundreds and hundreds of tracks and half-done projects he's just done nothing with. He reminds me of those oldschool photographers that when they died left behind thousands of undeveloped rolls of film.

I'm gonna borrow one out from the uni, hoping to use it for a live performance assignment. I eventually want to do some Madeon style music, but also have it trigger visuals. Who has one/has used one?

David Guetta is currently producing his sixth studio album. After the success of his last album ‘Nothing But The Beat,’ which sold over 4 million copies, David Guetta told WSJ that this album will be his “most personal album yet.” David also went on to say that he’s “a little bit scared” and that “it’s completely different from anything I’ve done before.” David Guetta just wanted to push himself to the max on this new album. “I know I can make beats that make people dance, so now the challenge is to create the best possible music and songs that are timeless.” What do you think is coming?

Following weeks of teaser marketing, including a blimp gliding over London and graffiti in New York streets, the artwork and packaging for Aphex Twin’s eagerly anticipated album, Syro, has been revealed. The first Aphex Twin album since 2001, Syro has been surrounded by mystique and teasing publicity. What we do know is that it will be released on triple-vinyl with a limited edition triple-vinyl available for ballot winners. And now details have emerged that the artwork and packaging has been created by The Designer’s Republic, a graphic design studio with close ties to Warp. Lucky limited edition vinyl grabbers will see the stunning perspex package (displayed above) join their collection, which includes a bonus track that is pressed into fabric (see below). A unique feature on both vinyl editions of Syro is the inclusion of every production cost and a ‘disinfographic’ outlining all the equipment used in making the album. Ian Anderson, founder of The Designer’s Republic, explains how early conversations with Richard James (Aphex Twin) gave way to three ideas behind the packaging: “At the beginning of the process we discussed a few ideas Richard wanted to explore – one was the idea of pressing the album or a single track into the fabric of the cover, effectively as a deboss; a second was to use shots of the raw vinyl pucks albums are pressed from; and the third was to document in some way every cost involved in the production of the specific album format the purchaser had in their hands.” Source

If you haven’t been to one of his personal shows, Major Lazer shows, a block party, or Holy Ship, you have definitely at least heard a track produced by this random white dude: Diplo. He’s undeniably one of many hard working and creative individuals in the music scene right now, and he’s only getting better with age. Sitting on the ripe median of his 30′s, he’s already known for a label, a movement, an infinite amount of successful songs, and he’s even mastered the art of brushing off the haters. He’s been getting a lot of, excuse the french, shit lately from the P.L.U.R. kiddies and has been facing scrutiny in regards to the banning issues. Despite all of the drama, he’s made it very clear that he’s here for one thing and one thing only: the music. Billboard had a sit down with Mr. Pentz and talked about everything from his salary to his up and coming work. What was the most intriguing about it all, was how effortlessly Diplo brought up a topic that should be touched on a lot more in the electronic dance music community. “[People in the rave culture] don’t even care about the music anymore, it’s about the experience and hearing things that are really familiar and comfortable over and over again…All the DJs were at my Vegas night one night–I’m not going to name names, but all the big EDM guys–and I played a Juicy J record; they were like, ‘Where do you get these records?’ I’m like, ‘They’re on the radio! You can buy them off iTunes!’…” Of course it seems laughable to expect every EDM producer and DJ to know exactly who Young Thug, Travis Scott, GoldLink, or Makonnen is, but Diplo explains it more as expanding the horizons or at least wanting to: “They really have no idea. They live in these bubbles. I’m like, ‘Damn, dudes, use your imagination a little bit.’…A lot of DJs don’t realize they’re here today and gone tomorrow.” While we can admit, it may not seem as easy to delve into the “urban world” as it is with say the big room or house world, we do know all it takes is an eager mind and the Internet. Whether Diplo is right or wrong for calling anybody out, he does bring up a topic that should be taken into consideration a lot more, especially when we’re dealing with heavily influential artists who have a tight grip on what their followers can listen and be exposed to. Don’t worry though, this interview wasn’t all shade; he gets into a lot more that you can check out on the Billboard website.

The Australian Tax Office has obtained royalty payment details of over 15,000 artists and 1000 companies in a bid to crack down on non-compliant taxpayers. The ATO has the details of some $800 million in royalty collections and payments for the 2011, 2012 and 2013 financial years, which it obtained from APRA AMCOS. The payments will be matched to existing tax records to identify instances of potential non-compliance such as omitted income. Beginning with a sample of 1000 music industry individuals and companies, the ATO’s program aims to identify non-compliance with various taxation laws to assure payment obligations. “The ATO collects data from a large number of sources under its data matching program and uses this information to detect cases where tax laws are not being complied with,” said Glenn Burke, Director of Entertainment Accounting & Taxation Services in a statement. “An example of non-compliance would be where the artist does not declare royalty income in their tax return.” While a representative from APRA AMCOS has told TMN it does not plan on releasing a statement at this point, the collective has posted a message to its members on its official website. Read the message below. This is an important reminder that, as per our communication to you in early June this year, your APRA AMCOS royalties are considered income for tax purposes and must be declared in your tax return. The Australian Taxation Office routinely requests audits of our members royalty earnings and, as per our legal obligations, we have again complied with the ATO’s request this financial year. We recommend you speak to your personal tax advisor for more information. According to the Herald Sun, the ATO believes the costs of the investigation will be offset by the large sums regained by non-compliant taxpayers. “With the size and success of the Australian music industry it was only a matter of time before the ATO commenced music royalty data matching,” Glenn Burke said in a statement. “Musicians who receive royalties should carefully check their tax returns to ensure all royalties received have been declared as income. Where income has not been declared the artist should voluntarily request an amendment to their tax return.” Source
