  1. In promotion of his new website, pluko makes his star-studded debut Following the unveiling of his new website and a massive main stage performance at HARD Summer, pluko is proud to finally share his debut album sixteen with the world. The full body of work is out now via ODESZA’s Foreign Family Collective. To his fans’ delight, a quartet of singles in “need ya (feat. Nevve),” “pink.,” “asleep (feat. MOONZz),” and “l o v e,” have been released already but the full 12-track album is gearing up to truly be something special. Foreign Family Collective does not take signing artists lightly and pluko’s inclusion into a roster that includes the likes of Big Wild, Kasbo, Jai Wolf, RÜFÜS DU SOL & more is quite an accomplishment in itself. But even amongst heralded company, pluko and his album sixteen shine as a smooth and cohesive listen across a wide spectrum of emotions, playing off both his life experiences and personality. From highlighting his journey to finding himself in “found,” to his talking forgiveness in “his perspective,” and in the message of serenity he shares throughout the blissfully peaceful vibes in “d r i f t,” pluko’s managed to find a perfect harmony between his creative output and sharing his most profound emotions. With the intention of being rightfully considered as a timeless work of art, pluko’s sixteen is delightfully fun, impressively profound, and arguably as perfect of a debut album as can be. With merely 2 years of activity, pluko has gone from bedroom producer to main stage act. Hailing from the small town of Hollidaysburg, PA, Sam Martinsen has racked up over 50 million plays across platforms while securing slots doing live sets at major festivals throughout North America. His bass-filled tracks and intricate weaving of each and every record provide a sound you would hear from veterans of the industry, not typically from an 18-year-old. Producing from his home studio, pluko is bringing about a whole new and exciting vibe to the ever-growing electronic scene. Influenced by the likes of ODESZA, Porter Robinson, and Tourist, it is without a doubt that pluko is the next name up in the industry. Listen to pluko’s debut above, courtesy of Soundcloud. 2. Tampa and St. Petersburg have gradually grown their own underground dance music scene. Cities like Miami and Orlando may still dwarf Tampa and St. Pete, but the neighboring central Florida cities have come into their own the past few years. Local groups have helped the underground scene blossom, and one of those instrumental organizers goes by the name of Furious Funk. Furious Funk, also a record label, has brought a number of great events to the Tampa Bay area, and its next event looks to continue its great streak. This Saturday, enter The Wormhole with DJ Three, Denney, OMNOM and more. First, some context. The Wormhole is an immersive production that featured during the Distant Dimension music festival in Lakeland back in January. Furious Funk organized Distant Dimension, and have since used the Wormhole production for local shows. For this latest event, The Wormhole has been upgraded to dazzle guests with its intricate production and lighting. As proven by Distant Dimensions and its local shows, Furious Funk knows how to curate an accessible yet engaging lineup. The upcoming Wormhole event is no exception, bringing tried-and-true DJs and adding them to a new context. DJ Three, a homegrown producer and DJ who has played many shows both in Tampa and around the world, headlines the event. Tech house innovator Denney and Dirtybird rising star OMNOM provide primary support, making for a diverse lineup of house, techno and every shade in between. Other names include Dirtybird alumnus Two Tails and a b2b set between Chris Khaos and Doctor Boom. The upcoming The Wormhole event will be held at Nova 535 in St. Pete this Saturday, August 25. Tickets are still available; head over to Eventgroove to purchase your tickets and to journey into The Wormhole. This article was first published on Your EDM. 4. In May, Disclosure broke their silence with a new single called “Ultimatum”. Today, the UK duo is back with even more material in the form of “Moonlight”. While the previous offering seemed primed for BBQ playlists, this latest offering is more of the chilled-out variety. Think of the moments when a hot summer afternoon finally starts to cool off, and the sun sets and turns to night. It’s a much more low-key affair without any of the daytime pretensions. Take a listen below. The Lawrence brothers’ last release came with the 2016 EP, Moog For Love, which was preceded in 2015 by their last full-length Caracal. They’ve promised to “come back bigger and better in 2019.” It seems like they’re well on their way to following through on that vow. Source
  5. As most people know, I’m always good for a bit of bouncy house music in my life and this new collaborative single from warner case & Zak Downtown definitely hits the spot for me. Originally conceived as a bouncy instrumental from warner case, the track evolved into the record it is today out of sheer coincidence when warner case bumped into Zak Downtown who graciously agreed to provide his smooth vocals. The result is a banging club-ready record that’s sure to take over the New York house music scene by storm. 7. It looks like Deftones are hard at work on their next album, according to a handful of Instagram posts by the band and its members. A couple of new Instagram posts from programmer and turntablist Frank Delgado show guitarist Stephen Carpenter and bassist Sergio Vega working on new music. Those pics follow a shot of Carpenter from a few days ago on the band’s Instagram account, with a couple of the posts including the hashtag #writing. The hashtags also reveal that Deftones are working in a studio in their hometown of Sacramento, California. These new Instagram shots follow a few from March, which showed Deftones’ first foray into the studio for work on what will be the band’s ninth album, a follow-up to 2016’s Gore. It would be reasonable to assume the new album will arrive in 2019. Deftones will take a break from the studio to play a series of festivals this fall, including Louder Than Life, Austin City Limits, Aftershock and their very own fest, Dia De Los Deftones. Source
  8. Ganja White Night, aside from their distinct wobbles, also have a couple of insane and amazing animated music videos. Two songs from their 2016 album Mr. Wobble, “Wobble Master” and “Lfo Requiem,” were animated, with a third now joining the group from their latest album, The Origins. “Chak Chel” presents a tribal sound along with the characteristic wobbles, incorporating chants and natural sound elements to take you into the depths of ancient Mayan culture. The video reinforces this connection with incredibly beautiful animation that tells a breathtaking story. Watch below! This article was first published on Your EDM. 10. It seemed like a pretty sure thing, but given Netflix’s history of cancelling shows in batches with little warning (particularly shows that spend a decent amount on, say, period detail), we were nervously hopeful that GLOW would keep on. After all, anybody who caught the show’s terrific second season would say that there’s nowhere to go but up for the series, which found a much stronger footing as a dramedy with its emphasis on the drama. Given the season’s wide-open conclusion, it’s reassuring to get the news that Netflix has officially renewed the series for a third season. The third season will (mild spoiler alert) see the women of GLOW take the show out of seedy ’80s Los Angeles and on to a nightly revue in Las Vegas. Ruth (Alison Brie) and Debbie (Betty Gilpin) remain a complicated pairing, Sam (Marc Maron) will look forward to continuing his reparation into a less bottom-feeding kind of filmmaker, and the show will presumably get the kind of facelift that’ll make it bigger than ever before. We’re sure those 10 Emmy nominations didn’t hurt, but all the same, we’re beyond thrilled to see the show return. In a TV landscape so entrenched in prestige-chasing, aggressively grim series, GLOW has wound up being a pleasant counterpoint to so many of them even when it explores heavier material. Season three doesn’t yet have an airdate, but particularly if the show turns up strong at the Emmys next month, we wouldn’t be surprised if some news emerges about that sooner than later. Source
  11. David Harbour, the extremely online actor who plays Sheriff Hopper on Netflix’s Stranger Things, provided plenty of details about the series’ third season during a Q&A at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles on Friday night, not the least of which being that the Duffer Brothers are describing the upcoming season as “so much of a departure and so much of a risk.” As we already know, season three takes place during the summer of 1985, with the events circling around the release of Back to the Future, but it appears there’s another movie of the era that’s had an impact on the season’s direction. “The Duffers are so specific each year with the movies. And Fletch is one movie we get to play around and have some fun with this season, which you wouldn’t expect from Stranger Things and you wouldn’t expect from the Spielberg universe and you certainly wouldn’t expect from a darker season.” (Read: Let’s Be Honest, ALF Should Just Join Stranger Things) A Chevy Chase vehicle, Fletch follows a newspaper reporter who routinely changes his identity in pursuit of scoops. As such, it’s likely that the flick’s influence will lend itself to Jake Busey’s Hawkins Post journalist, who’s been described as having “questionable morals and a sick sense of humor.” Harbour also revealed that the forthcoming season will find his character struggling with being a mentor to Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven, for whom he continues to serve as a guardian. “Their relationship is going to get far more complex, because, you know, things happen to girls and boys when they’re 13 and 14,” he explained. “A lot of changes go on in the body and in your social life, and I don’t think he’s going to handle watching her become a woman in front of his eyes very well. That’s a horrifying thing for him — maybe even more so than fighting inter-dimensional monsters.” Hardy-har-har, Dad. (Read: Steve Harrington Is the Greatest Stranger Things Character, and Here Are All the GIFs to Prove It) He also hinted at a love story for Hopper, noting that, if it were up to him, he’d angle for a romance with Winona Ryder’s Joyce Byers. Wouldn’t we all, buddy. Add all of this to what we already know: Season three will premiere in the summer of 2019, and will also introduce new characters like Cary Elwes’ corrupt mayor and the local mall’s Maya Hawke, who works with Steve Harrington at an ice cream shop called Scoops Ahoy. To coincide with the new season’s release, Penguin Random House will publish a prequel novel telling the story of Eleven’s mother and Telltale will release a video game set in the series’ universe. 12. You’d be hard-pressed to find people who support homophobia in dance music culture, but they are of course out there lurking. Much has been done to provide all cultures, sexual orientations, races, genders, et al. with a safe space to dance their booties off, but the battle continues day after day. The latest to really make a statement about homophobia in dance music is Canadian producer/DJ Ekali, who in doing so, also came out as bisexual. Yes I’m bisexual. 14. Watching your favorite television show on Netflix is typically an interruption-free experience. You simply click play and watch episodes roll by one after the other. Occasionally you’ll get an “Are you still watching?” message after a few hours of nonstop viewing, but that’s about it. Now, however, the streaming giant has begun testing promotional videos that air between each episode — which some users are calling what they really are: commercials. As The New York Times points out, numerous subscribers have taken to social media to voice their dissatisfaction over the 10- to 20-second ads, which began popping up over the weekend. In response, Netflix spokeswoman Smita Saran said, “These video promos are actually personalized recommendations for titles we think a member may enjoy watching. In this particular case, we are testing whether surfacing recommendations between episodes helps members discover stories they will enjoy faster.” It’s true that the streamer often runs tests on unspecified numbers of global users to determine which new features to incorporate into the service. For example, movie trailers that play when you hover over a title were made permanent after a multi-year trial period. Similarly, these new promo videos have been in the works for quite some time. “We have been looking at ways to insert rich video into our experiences for several years,” explained Saran. Like any good company, Netflix said they’re willing to listen to user complaints. If you really want to get rid of these ads, however, skip or simply don’t click on them; Netflix will be “looking at [user] behavior within the service” to determine whether these short commercials become a permanent feature. 16. Here in LA, we’re always looking for the perfect summer tracks because, let’s face it, even when it’s winter it’s still pretty much beach weather here. Such a climate has led to an interesting musical climate amongst the actual climate, leading us to love tracks like Maro Music’s new “High” all year round. Spirited and brimming with fun, “High” feels as refreshing as getting drenched by a tropical waterfall on a hot summer’s day. With the studio wizardry only a top-notch producer of his caliber can deliver, Maro Music puts his unique twist on what’s to become one of our new favorite songs for the season. Subtle chords in minor keys form just the right balance to the impossibly catchy female lead vocal. For fans of Maro Music who know him for his booty-shaking style of trap, this wholehearted pop song may come as a surprise. With “High,” Maro shows his skills at crafting a proper pop song, whether it’s expected of him or not. “High” is an uplifting, superbly pretty song that’s joyful, and it’s pure candy for the ears and soul. “High” is Maro Music at his best, and this song shows Maro’s wide spectrum. 17. There are seven wonders in the world (depending on whose list you go by), and by the end of this September, Paul Oakenfold will have performed at three of them. The legendary English record producer and trance DJ is full of firsts, going on tour with U2 in the early ’90s, playing a show at the Mount Everest base camp, and more. Now, this September, he will make history with the first-ever performance at Stonehenge. There will be an invited audience of 50 hand-picked guests to witness this special experience at this UNESCO World Heritage site and this will add to the unusual locations Paul’s played at including the Great Wall of China, the FIFA World Cup 2018 and Base Camp on Mount Everest. Having the opportunity to play at the site, built 5,000 years ago, is a “privilege” adds Oakenfold. “I am so lucky to be able to share my music from such an iconic site. The energy there will be like nowhere else on earth, and this will be reflected in my music and performance. Despite having performed at incredible events and locations all across the globe, sunset at Stonehenge will be the most magical.” Oakenfold will record his new album Live at Stonehenge on the night creating a ‘first of its kind experience’ for those lucky enough to be a part of this historic live event. The event was conceived and is produced by Alon Shulman as part of his new ‘Origins’ concept that incorporates music, film, performance “and much more.” Shulman, commenting on the plans, says, “Together, Paul and I wanted to create something completely unique. Having worked closely with English Heritage it is fitting that our first special moment takes place at Stonehenge.” This live event is the next installment in a series of a number of special projects that are planned to take place over the next three years. Oakenfold says, “Its Alon’s special relationships and his long-term vision that make the impossible possible. We’ll shortly be announcing our plans using amazing locations championing great artists and new music.” As the custodians of Stonehenge, English Heritage are tasked with preserving many of the UK’s most important landmarks. “We’ve been working very closely with Alon Shulman and the team at Universe on a number of exciting forward-looking creative initiatives that support English Heritage’s values of conservation and inspiration,” says English Heritage director Luke Purser. “It is exciting that they’ve invited British DJ Paul Oakenfold, one of the most accomplished and recognised artists on the global stage, to be the first DJ to play at Stonehenge. We’re delighted with Paul’s enthusiasm for our work and that he has embraced the uniqueness of this site where he will be recording his new album, which will support the work of the Charity.” This article was first published on Your EDM. 19. Whenever musicians have tried their hand at commercial jingles, it’s usually produced some fairly entertaining, albeit unexpected, results. Chance the Rapper dressed up as a lion for Kit Kat bars, Fred Armisen pledged his love for KFC, and Pusha-T gave us one of the most memorable McDonald’s tunes in history. However, I doubt any of that could prepare the world for the new Chef Boyardee jingle, which features Lil Yachty and… Donny Osmond. Titled “Start the Par-dee”, it’s actually more ridiculous than you could imagine, and, perhaps because America is falling apart all around us, it somehow goddamn works. There are silly lyrics littered all over the place and the accompanying visual stars the two driving around together with goggles on, using large cutlery as instruments, and — you know what, I’ll just let you implode your brain at your own discretion. Check it out below. According to Billboard, apparently the jingle is supposed to bridge baby boomers and the millennials to celebrate Chef Boyardee’s 90th anniversary. Thank you, advertising industry, this is exactly what we wanted. You’ve nailed it completely! Source
  20. We’ll just go ahead and say it: heavy metal and hard rock lovers are the most passionate fans on Earth. Heck, don’t believe us? There’s a Spotify study that proves metal fans are the most loyal listeners in the world. With that said, we’re excited to announce the official launch of Heavy Consequence, a new metal and hard rock online destination powered by Consequence of Sound. Heavy Consequence will serve as a celebration of metal and hard rock, covering the latest news, presenting exclusive premieres and featuring interviews with prominent bands and musicians in the scene. Building up to the official launch, Heavy Consequence has already conducted interviews with Mastodon’s Brann Dailor, Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale and Spinal Tap’s Derek Smalls, along with running exclusive premieres from such dynamic bands as Pig Destroyer, KEN Mode and more. Our metal coverage will tackle a wide spectrum of acts, ranging from the shoe-gazing black metal stylings of Deafheaven to the old-school thrash of Slayer. In fact, you can see live reviews and photo galleries of recent shows by both those bands already on Heavy Consequence. As Mastodon’s Dailor told Heavy Consequence in his interview, “I love metal, in general, just because there’s so many things you can do with it. It’s so varied, especially now, there’s so many different subgenres. It’s one of the healthiest forms of music that that there is.” When it comes to hard rock, it’s alive and well, despite some comments by Gene Simmons to the contrary. Guns N’ Roses’ reunion tour is raking in millions, festivals like Rock on the Range are selling out every year, and young bands like Greta Van Fleet are bringing guitar-driven music to a new generation. Regarding that passion for rock music, Lzzy Hale told us in her interview, “The reason that you pick up an instrument or that you play that music — you don’t even really have an explanation when you’re a kid. It’s not like I have this philosophical answer as to why I love rock. It just feels good, and you feel like a badass!” We’ve already seen some great metal and hard rock stories this summer, including one about a metal sign language interpreter who caught the national media’s attention, and another about a fan whose life was saved thanks to what initially seemed like an unpleasant experience at an Every Time I Die show. So, see what Heavy Consequence has to offer so far on by checking out our homepage. And keep up with the metal and hard rock news as it happens by following our socials: — HeavyConsequence.com (homepage) — Facebook — Twitter — Instagram Source
  21. The dubstep duo Adventure Club started off as a pop-punk band heavy in the metal scene with barely knowing each other. Sooner than later after one of them keeping their ears open in the electronic scene, they started touching their feet into the dubstep world. After listening to some intriguing remixes of some of their favorite bands, they couldn’t resist to mess around with producing. Always leading the superhero theme, the duo has had sold-out shows, released albums, and remixes catching the ears of many. If gaining new fans doesn’t say much to you, then allow their Grammy Nomination for the remix of Undercover by Kehlani do all the talking. Adventure Club recently performed for the first time at this years Shambhala Music Festival in Salmo River Ranch in Canada. Before jumping on decks, blowing away fans with their industrious sounds, we double teamed the duo, interviewed them about their past endeavors and visions. Listen to ‘Dream’ ft. ELEA as you enjoy our conversation with the men themselves: Photo of Adventure Club via Facebook Are you really excited to play tonight? Leighton- Very, very excited. Christian- We touched down and we just tried to get in touch with the festival. We roamed around and started picking up on the vibe. How did you guys actually meet? I know you were in a pop-punk band initially. Leighton- That is how we met. Christian- I showed up for a band try out-we had a mutual friend. I walked into Leighton’s parent’s house, went into his basement. I was a guitarist, so I put my amp down, and told him I was his new guitarist. (laugh) We had a couple band practices not too long after we started jamming together. We went out to a local bar together, bonded like crazy. I think it was winter time, we fell into a bush together and then we were best friends. Leighton- A bush is what cemented the bond. Christian- We woke up in my basement covered in twigs and stuff. And now you guys are here again in nature, hey look how that worked out! Leighton- Full circle. Christian- That’s the first time I told that story. What impulsed you to transition into electronic music after being in the band? Christian- Leighton had his ear to the ground as far as electronic music goes […] This kind of like new wave of dubstep came out and we heard a couple remixes from some of our favorite hardcore bands. It was mind blowing because the hardcore style break down where it goes into the halftime drumline and feels slow and headbanging. Dubstep was doing that with all of these cool sounds and this new style and it really just spoke to us. When you transitioned then how did you come up with the name ‘Adventure Club’? Leighton- I think at the time when we were making Adventure Club music we wanted to make the super grimy, super hardcore. We wanted a name when someone heard it, they thought it was going to be the most bubblegum music like pop or Barbie girl music. Christian- We thought it would be an ironic name. Leighton- Yea, an ironic name. And then people would listen to the music and then realize this was not what we were expecting at all. You mentioned that you guys actually played around with producing while you were in a band, so did you teach yourself how to produce? Christian- Self-taught. We were not very good at it at all. We were laying down tracks just to get ideas down when we were in a live band so when Adventure Club started taking off, there was a lot of learning to be done. It was really just a fun experience, discovering that and having that at your fingertips. I read that you use Sonar by Cakewalk and you use Ableton for editing. For upcoming producers who are trying to learn different programs for music production, why do you use Sonar- what are the benefits from that one versus using Ableton alone or any other program? Christian- It’s more reasonable. There’s more available and more tutorials. Leighton- For electronic music itself, it is geared towards that whereas Cakewalk is geared towards live instrumentation. Christian- But you can say that it helps craft our sound in a more unique way. A more unique workflow than a majority of the people in the scene. In 2013, you started Superhero Anonymous Mixes, why did you chose that theme with Superheroes? Christian- I love that we are talking about the hero theme. We feel like it really speaks to us and speaks to the music and speaks to our brand. It feels nice-its right for us. It just made the most sense to use individually as people. I feel like everyone can have that everyday hero scenario. This year you guys got a Grammy nomination for the remix “Undercover” by Kehlani. How does that even feel- to make it this far? Christian- I don’t even know still. You just brought it up and it stills feels like it didn’t happen. Leighton- Objectively or even subjectively, I feel like getting a Grammy nomination is one of the highest achievements that you can aspire for as a musician. So even to get that nod in our direction was something surreal to us to actually go there, walk the carpet, see some of our idols, and all of the people we look up to. Adventure Club at the Grammy’s via Facebook Since you have been traveling internationally to perform. What are some of your favorite places and do you have any memorable moments? Christian- Lately we love touring Asia. They are just getting into EDM, they are really responsive to any genre you want to play. Leighton- As far as memorable moments go- I feel like Coachella 2014 is like a highlight of our career. We got to close out the Sahara tent. We brought out a couple of acts and it was one of the biggest crowds we very played in front of. You guys are really good at implementing a lot of different genres in your mixes. Nowadays, you do see producers that stick to one genre but then later start doing another style of music, and change. Do you guys feel like you will continue to stay in this direction with dubstep? Christian- It always calls to us. One amazing thing about the EDM scene is you can experiment and explore so many areas. From an artistic standpoint, it is extremely satisfying to express yourself in all these kinds of ways and using all these kinds of styles. It really promotes creativity. But with that said, I know we always get drawn and pulled back to that melodic dubstep/bass area. Leighton- It is what speaks to us the most. We were growing with the scene as well. Like we started with dubstep but then big room and deep house became the thing and then melodic dubstep made a comeback. Throughout the years of Adventure Club, we’ve always had this one unique sound that we tried to stick to however, that doesn’t necessarily mean that we don’t want to experiment with other sounds. What can your fans look forward to in the next couple months/year? Christian- We have been pushing pretty hard in that superhero direction for future projects. We’ve been getting called back to the roots a bit. It’s amazing that we can organically get pulled back into that original sound and our fans are with us over the course of our journey of Adventure Club. The fact that we can return to our roots holding that spark still, I think that’s important. So last question, who is each of your favorite superhero? Christian: Oh boy! Here it is (laughs) My big guy when I was a kid, Iron Man. My brother always had the comic books, and I always loved reading them. Leighton-Probably Thor. Big Thor fan. 22. We’re now deep enough into the lifespan of the internet that a movie like Searching can use the familiar visual hallmarks of the “old internet” for laughs of audience recognition, or even emotional resonance. Aneesh Chaganty‘s film opens with the kind of virtuosic glide through digital lives that’s informed so many Google ads in recent years, but it also hits on a key truth that most films made thus far about the internet tend to miss: there’s not the true disconnect between real lives and digital lives that most people think there is. In just a few minutes, on a Windows XP backdrop, a love story becomes a tragedy, and there are photos and searches and links and AIM conversations that play key roles at every step. Some time after, the screen is still full, but more solitary. Now, David (John Cho) clicks through distractions while trying to find some sense of purpose, after losing his wife to lymphoma. His only present one is to look after his 16-year-old daughter Margot (Michelle La), but even that’s strained at best. David and Margot are both grieving, but not with one another. They keep to themselves, David re-living his better life before things went wrong while Margot disappears into a world of her own, as teenagers tend to do. One night, David goes to sleep and wakes up to every parent’s worst nightmare: three missed calls, all made in succession in the middle of the night, and the sound of Margot’s phone going straight to voicemail. First, David assumes Margot just left early for school. Then he gets angry that she’d let her dad wait around in a state of panic for so long. Then he realizes that her laptop is on the counter, along with all her things, and that something has gone terribly wrong. From there, Searching becomes a modern rendition of the amateur detective genre, as David works furiously alongside Detective Vick (Debra Messing) to find Margot before the worst can unfold. Chaganty frames the action as a sprint through the digital world in all of its highs and lows; the entirety of Searching plays out across screens, and it’s a testament to how well-made the film is that the mystery always remains far more engrossing than the showy gimmick. As gimmicks go, Searching at least goes out of its way to make the most of its central conceit. It’s not the first film to use the space of a computer screen as a blank canvas for action (Unfriended, Open Windows), but Juan Sebastian Baron’s cinematography manages to alleviate the natural tedium of staring at the internet using dynamic zooms and pans. The film often manages to conjure up the sensations of closely analyzing a photograph on a website, or obsessing over the particular phrasings of a text message, and that’s where Searching finds so many of its most thrilling beats. Cho is an endlessly evocative performer, and even if he seems an odd fit for the bumbling, adrift father he’s tasked with putting across at times, his reactive performance (often partitioned off to a small part of the screen through a FaceTime chat next to another browser window) goes a long way in putting over the drama of the film’s increasingly twist-heavy race against the clock. Searching is more focused on style and presentation than anything else, which is probably just as well given that its story of a father and cop piecing together a missing persons case is nothing if not familiar. Yet when it leans into the unique ways in which people interact online (alone or with others), it finds distinctive new ways to tell that familiar story. There’s a lot of weight to a loving message of family affirmation being typed and then deleted, or a suspicious glance off-camera during a conversation, even in our own lives. Chaganty and his co-writer Sev Ohanian fill every corner of the film with these brief moments, and it’s better off for it, as those moments are what make the film feel most distinctive against its generic trappings. There’s a strong sense of earned sentiment to David’s relationship with his daughter, and it accomplishes a great deal in terms of establishing the film’s stakes as the plot races along. It’s not easy to make the internet cinematic, but Searching breaks new ground in taking the passive motions of being online and making them active, Chaganty frequently pushing Cho to the foreground as he pores over video updates or the kind of tiny linguistic minutiae that could be the different between bringing Margot home and losing her for good. This is a traditional thriller, with all of the red herrings and shocking revelations expected therein, but one that offers a fresh spin on time-tested material. More than anything, Searching hits on an eerie truth about our world: every answer we seek is right in front of us, but there’s so much to wade through that we could miss it altogether. 23. Yes, you read that headline right. Eric Clapton has a new Christmas album on the way, and he is dedicating “Jingle Bells” to Avicii. Eric Clapton dished the details in an interview with Billboard about the upcoming album, titled Happy Xmas. He said his rendition of “Jingle Bells” will be dedicated to “the memory of Avicii.” Billboard reported the song was dedicated to Avicii due to his “admiration for the late DJ.” Clapton even titled his version as “Jingle Bells (In Memory Of Avicii).” The combo may seem a bit odd, but it’s cool to see a legendary rock and blues star dedicate a song to Avicii. We’re curious why Clapton picked “Jingle Bells” of all songs to dedicate to Avicii; perhaps because it’s one of the happiest songs ever? Whatever the case, you can hear Clapton’s dedication to Avicii when Happy Xmas releases on October 12. Avicii committed suicide in April, leaving behind an untouchable legacy and impact on EDM and music as a whole. He remains sorely missed. 25. In a recent interview with The New York Times, Tesla billionaire Elon Musk complained about the toll running Tesla has taken on his personal life, stating that “from a personal pain standpoint, the worst is yet to come.” Such a statement caused many to wonder the status of his relationship with pop star Grimes, with whom he’d been dating since May. If social media is any indication, we may have our answer. Over the weekend, the pair unfollowed each other on Instagram, and Musk unfollowed Grimes on Twitter, where their romance first sparked. As of this writing, Grimes still follows Musk on Twitter, though she hasn’t engaged on the platform in several weeks. The relationship has produced no shortage of drama, with the progressive Grimes having surprised many by defending Musk’s anti-union practices and his history of GOP donations. Recently, controversial rapper Azealia Banks came forward with a bizarre tale of a weekend spent at Musk’s home with Grimes, in which she viciously attacked the couple and claimed Musk was “scrounging” for investors when not tweeting on acid. Neither camp has commented on the state of their romance as of yet, but we’re starting to think they might not be heading to Burning Man together, after all. Source
